EDITOR ‌WITH SNOW CURRENTLY FALLING IN ST. LOUIS, IT’S HARD TO believe that just last week birds were bidding us good morning with their beautiful song, and flowers were beginning to bloom.

I was personally welcoming spring with open arms, filling our abode with fresh flowers – something so simple, yet gladdening. I thoroughly enjoy working with Peruvian lilies, daisies, hydrangeas and so much more, attempting to create beautiful bouquets. Although I am no florist by any means, I had so much fun in the process. And if you share an interest in creating beautiful bouquets – whether you just want to give it a try or truly learn the art of floral arrangements – St. Louis recently gained a new venue to teach you the craft.

Starting on p. 31, LN contributing writer Connie Mitchell shares the story of Snapdragon Studio, where individuals can gather for a day to create beautiful bouquets. We hope you enjoy learning more about this new shop, located in Tower Grove South, and have the opportunity to create your own custom bouquet in the future.

If you’d rather keep your flowers in your garden, though, make sure to check out this week’s Missouri Botanical Garden, share how the local trial flower beds work and what we may be seeing this year.

ariety the Children’s Charity has what executive director Brian Roy describes as “our Variety methodology.” “We help the community of kids with special needs to reach their full potential from the time they are born till they turn 21,” he says.

That assistance often comes in the form of medical equipment and services to increase independence and mobility, as well as educational and recreational programs. “At the end of the day, we want to improve these kids’ skills, socialization, self-esteem and independence,” says Roy. Variety receives valuable support for its mission through numerous events, but one in particular holds a special place in the minds of the community.

“This will be our 51st year [of hosting Dinner with the Stars], and when you think of any event that has that kind of longevity, you have to be creative and unique each year,” Roy explains. “We’ve had iconic stars come in, which creates a lot of buzz. When we secured James Taylor [this year], that obviously was exciting! We are far outpacing any of the previous events with how quickly tickets are going!” The fivetime Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter naturally would be a big draw, but after Taylor secured a Kennedy Honor last year, 2017’s Dinner with the Stars promises to be nothing short of impressive – and the children will play a big part.

When asked if any stories about Variety have touched him, Roy answers, “Thousands of them. We get excited when we see results, and know how our programs and medical equipment help our kids – these are success stories. When you hear stories from parents about these life-changing moments, it sticks with you. Milestone moments, both big and small.”

Those instances come in the most unexpected ways, serving as a reminder to be thankful for

one’s physical and mental health. “It’s those small moments – everyday things – that parents can take for granted,” Roy shares. “One mother told me she was driving her kid to school and heard him say through his communication device, ‘I love you.’ He never initiated saying that on his own before Variety purchased this communication tool. The mother cried at hearing those words. These moments may seem trivial to us, but to these kids and parents, they mean everything. If we can make moments like this happen, it makes it all worthwhile.”

ove was in the air for more than 400 guests at Wings of Hope’s 15th annual Hope Is Where the Heart Is Gala on Feb. 11 at The Chase Park Plaza. This year’s fundraiser for the aviation nonprofit’s Medical Relief & Air Transport Program boasted record attendance and exceeded all fundraising goals. Jack and Crista Taylor and Jim and Diane Moffat chaired the event. Board Vice-Chairman Fred Meyland-Smith recognized presenting sponsor Fabick Cat on its 100-year anniversary. Guests were visibly moved as patients took the stage to share their stories of how Wings of Hope has made their journeys back to health possible. The evening kicked off with a cocktail hour, followed by dinner, silent and live auctions – emceed by Todd Morgan – and dancing to the music of Mirage.

The Women’s Safe House is the oldest and largest domestic violence shelter in the St. Louis region. Having served more than 8,000 women through 2016, it provides multiple support programs to women and children, along with support through it crisis hotline. Test for the Best ‌E very spring, garden catalogs brim with bright photographs of new and exciting plants – which themselves pose a problem.

Specifically, although everyone loves to freshen the landscape with charming, trendy additions, two common, interrelated questions from gardeners often arise: What will perform well here, and which varieties should I choose? The companies promoting many items serve a national audience, meaning many of their offerings may not be well suited to our specific growing conditions – hence the necessity of local test beds and trial gardens.

The Missouri Botanical Garden’s William T. Kemper Center for Home Gardening has several garden areas designated as trial beds. In them, new varieties are traditionally displayed side by side and are rated during the course of the year to see which perform in our region’s growing conditions.

To see records from the garden’s trial beds, search “Kemper Center Factsheets” on the web, and explore the flower trial results from various years. You’ll see how different selections stack up against one another, allowing you to choose the best performer for your own garden.

Also, look for innovations in the garden’s trials. In the past, the Missouri Botanical Garden featured plants grown from seed sent by companies that participate in national trials, but now, Julie Hess, senior horticulturist at Missouri Botanical Garden, is taking a new approach.

Starting this year, trials will not be limited to those sent by vendors, but will include plant groups specially selected for trialing interest here. Combinations of annuals, perennials, dwarf trees, shrubs and vegetables will be grown in more gardenlike displays rather than the formal rows of plants as before.

Hess, along with the garden’s staff, started this transition last year with the Southern Living Plants bed at the west end of the trials section. This planting, donated by Southern Living magazine, is one of its northernmost trials. In return for the bed, the garden reports each spring what lived or died during the winter.

Hess has also designed a bed with a variety of autumn crops to see what will overwinter well, in hopes of finding plants that can be used in the fall, left in the ground and inter-planted in the spring in the manner that gardeners to the south of us do.

Terra Nova Nurseries. All of these plants are currently on the market and available to the public, as opposed to many of the other trial varieties, which have not yet been released.

Some of the perennials that will be tested include five different varieties of Euchomis, some of the Agastache ‘Kudos’ series (genetically dwarf) and several colors of Echinacea (looking for improved hardiness). These selections will be observed for three years, allowing several rounds of seasons. Since no two summers or winters in St. Louis are ever alike, multiyear cycles will yield much more accurate information.

A special area will be filled with plants sporting this year’s most trendy plant color, butter yellow, and will include Coreopsis ‘Buttermilk,’ Verbascum ‘Gold Nugget’ and Leucanthemum ‘Goldfinch.’ Hess will be trialing nine different varieties of Cosmos to see which holds up best and keeps flowering in what promises to be another hot, humid St. Louis summer. Look for the newest compact patio vegetables, which will be tested in containers and the ground.

We’re hoping these additions will make this garden area more interesting and educational for everyone – including us.

f you dream of assembling gorgeous floral arrangements to share with friends and family or to brighten up your home, Snapdragon Studio has a solution.

Owner and lead designer Silvia Dadian-Smith understands why people want to make their own arrangements. “Creating a unique floral design is such a meditative and creative experience,” she says. “When I first started working with flowers, I just fell in love with the process, and I was constantly looking for an opportunity to get my hands on a wide variety of blooms and play with new, hardto-find flowers. I found it can be challenging to know where to look, and I’ve met so many people who feel the same way.”

That realization led Dadian-Smith to create “flower bars,” collaborative events in which she shares her passion for floral design through instruction and handson practice. “We’ve had such a fantastic response to the concept,” she says. “It’s so rewarding to see how happy it makes people to try juxtaposing different flowers in arrangements, play with new color combinations and figure out what visually appeals to them.”

She started offering flower bar events in 2015 and since then has held at least one per month, partnering with local businesses including Bowood Farms, Urban Matter, Mesa Home and TechArtista for “pop-up” flower bar events for the public.

Flower bars as private parties are becoming increasingly popular, too. “We’ve been so thrilled by the interest in them, and we’re very excited to announce that we’ll be opening a storefront in Tower Grove South this summer, where we’ll be able to expand the flower bar concept as a weekly event, as well as host private events,” Dadian-Smith says.

Participants work with local flowers whenever possible, creating arrangements or wreaths from seasonal blooms. Flowers and greenery are sourced from area suppliers, such as Flower Hill Farms and Urban Buds.

Dadian-Smith encourages participants to experiment when introducing them to the materials. “We like to focus on introducing guests to the materials and how they might be used – for example, how a sturdier stem or branch might be used to create support in an arrangement, while more delicate stems might be added at the end of the arranging process as a textural detail,” she says.

Flower bar patrons learn best practices for arranging, maintaining and displaying flowers for maximum freshness. And although Dadian-Smith shares her perspectives and strategies for curating and combining flowers and greenery, she tries to avoid letting her aesthetic become the “right” way to do things. Participants often return for subsequent events so they can develop individual style while incorporating basic tenets of professional flower arranging.

Flower bar parties are customized for the client’s preferences, Dadian-Smith says.

“We’ll typically pick one project – for example, vase arrangements, floral crowns, succulent terrariums or wreath-making, among others – and then source flowers, foliage and vases based on the feel of the event, with an effort to be as seasonal as possible whenever we can,” she explains. “In the past, we’ve worked with clients at their venue of choice or collaborated with local businesses as a ‘pop-up,’ but we’re thrilled to be able to soon host guests at our storefront.”

Dadian-Smith has noticed more garden-style arrangements using a variety of materials in natural-looking designs. She encourages participants to try unexpected combinations of colors and look for materials at farmers markets and in their own backyards.

“Play around, see how things hold in water and don’t be afraid of mistakes,” she recommends. “You might find some awesome new things you’ll return to throughout the season.”

Although flower bars have proven popular and will be a more prominent part of Snapdragon Studio in its new Photo by Major Minor Productions Tower Grove South location, DadianSmith continues to specialize in floral design for events, especially weddings. “Our new storefront on Morganford [Road] will be open in July, and we’ll be offering monthly seasonal arranging classes, as well as hosting a weekly flower bar where guests can drop in, select from a curated collection of blooms and design their own arrangement in the shop,” she says.

Snapdragon Studio is already taking reservations for private parties in the new storefront and will continue pop-up collaborations with local businesses. Seasonal arranging will be the topic of Dadian-Smith’s next class this Sunday, March 19, at 11 a.m. at Bowood Farms. Tickets cost $60 and can be reserved by calling 314-454-6868.

t’s a busy time of year at Chesterfield Valley Nursery, as Jim Graeler and his team work diligently to bring in new products for their customers.

Graeler, the nursery’s general manager, says in the past few months he’s traveled all over the country, from North Carolina to Oregon, to seek out unique and quality plants that fit the nursery’s style.

“We search the countryside and visit different nurseries,” he says. “We’re always looking for that new and unusual plant.”

That’s something that sets Chesterfield Valley Nursery apart from other nurseries, he says. While Graeler and his team offer all of the usual plants and trees you’d expect to find at a nursery, like hydrangeas

and Japanese maples, their quality is key.

They also carry unique varieties of standard trees, like a Japanese maple with a branching characteristic, setting it apart from most maples in the area. Graeler says they’ve also been bringing in a lot of weeping- and cascading-tree varieties, which are perfect for yards lacking space for other varieties.

“Varieties like the ‘Ace of Hearts’ redbud stay more compact,” Graeler says.

Chesterfield Valley Nursery can help customers wanting other yard design and landscaping done, too.

“If someone wants an outdoor kitchen or fire pit, we are capable of creating designs and installing everything,” Graeler says. “We can pull everything into a complete package for the client.”

This spring, Graeler’s goal is the same as it is every spring: give clients the best quality product and the best quality service.

“We want to be someone [our customer] can count on,” he says.

Local bridal boutiques share this season’s wow-worthy wedding gown trends.

M

odern brides want their wedding dress to wow from all angles, and today’s top designers have delivered, unveiling an incredible variety of soft and romantic gowns, as well as dramatic and flirty dresses for spring. “People are spending a lot of money on their wedding day pictures, so brides want their gowns to be beautiful from 360 degrees,” says Debbie Rudawsky, owner of Town & Country Bridal Boutique in Clayton.

As today’s brides express their personalities through their wedding dresses, local boutique owners are seeing both traditional and modern designs – with a twist, says Stephanie Fagyal, owner of Berrybridge Bridal Boutique in Ladue. “There is a lot of lace, then there is a lot of illusion [sheer paneling] – it’s split between a fuller ballgown that’s more traditional and a beaded dress that’s a little sexier,” she explains, adding that couture designers including Vera Wang and Monique Lhuillier offer selections for either personality. “There are so many options, so everybody is able to create something that is very uniquely them.”

For classic, romantic brides, there are light, flowy fabrics, from unique lace to silk crepe and organza, in long-sleeve and sleeveless gowns from top bridal designers such as Elizabeth Fillmore and Claire Pettibone, says Kristin Lucks Shelton, co-owner of Fleur de Lis Bridal Boutique in Clayton.

For modern brides who want to show off their curves, Rudawsky says mermaid and fit-and-flare dresses with eye-catching accents, such as exaggerated ruffles and stunning trains, as well as dramatic cuts, including plunging necklines and low backs, are on trend. And for the ultimate wow-factor, there are illusion neck and back panels for a sheer, sexy look, she adds.

Another creative and expressive trend for spring weddings is bridal separates, which allow brides to mix and match separates. Items such as a beaded corset or lace and illusion

in a church may opt for a floor-length gown with a stunning train, while another bride who is to be wed at a winery may choose a comfortable, tea-length dress, Rudawsky says.

As for the most figure-flattering gowns, Fagyal says some designers’ dresses fit better on certain body types, so it’s best to try on different styles and cuts to find your ideal dress. “It’s based on everybody’s body type and unique fit,” she says. With so many modification options, Shelton says there’s not one style that complements a specific body type.

“We tell our brides to be open-minded,” she says. “You may not realize you love a certain style until trying it on and what makes the bride feel the most special.”

Brides say, ‘On my first anniversary, I can wear part of my wedding-day look.’ How sentimental!”

Today’s brides also have the option of coloring outside the box of classic white and ivory gowns, Rudawsky says. Champagne, blush and (pale) blue stone are among popular muted hues that serve as a unique lining underneath a lace, tulle or organza dress, she explains.

The venue atmosphere can also help determine the perfect frock, Friedman says – whether it’s a formal country-club affair that calls for a floor-length silk gown or a destination beach wedding that requires something flowing, made from silk chiffon, whether long or short.

hen I first met Carol Daniel in the spring of 1995, I was working the news desk at KMOX. We struck up an instant rapport when she shared that she worked at a station in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and when I told her I had worked in nearby Paducah, Kentucky, a big smile graced her face because she knew she was in friendly company. From the minute we met, I knew I liked Carol.

That was the day Carol came in for a live, on-air audition – something she hadn’t been expecting to be live per se. I gave her the “good” news copy, which contained my own formatted cheat sheet, meaning I knew it would be easier to read for the newscast. My boss, news director John Angelides, had been looking for an announcer for weeks. As soon as Carol finished the news, I told John, “I think you just found your new anchor.”

Carol got the job and has become a fixture as the “Voice of St. Louis.” It’s hard to believe that was 22 years ago. Carol has been a broadcaster at KMOX longer than any other African-American woman in the station’s storied history. I don’t think she set out to be a standard-bearer, but she tells me that over time she realized just how meaningful her role is to some listeners.

“What opened my eyes was when I met older black women in town, and they would take me by both hands and squeeze my hands and say, ‘I am so proud of you,’” Carol says. “That slow, deliberate, emotional pace, and I knew what they were talking about. I represented something.”

Carol grew up a military kid at Fort Leonard Wood, where her dad was a boot camp drill sergeant. (He also served two combat tours in Vietnam.) She says she inherited her dad’s strong voice and her mom’s determination to succeed.

“My parents understood and said, ‘You are going to achieve,’” Carol says. “My mother was intent that I was going to stand on my own.”

Carol went to high school in rural Waynesville, Missouri, where she was in pageants, was a cheerleader and was her class president.

Following in the footsteps of four siblings who all earned master’s degrees, she graduated on the dean’s list from Lincoln University and went into the news business.

In St. Louis, that means, all too often, reporting on violent crime. Carol, though, is always looking for hope that the vicious circle of violence can be broken, and she believes it has to start with the children.

“If you’re coming from a place where your mother was in prison and you don’t even know your father, then shooting for the stars means graduating from high school, having the chance to become a parent and working productively,” Carol says. “But first, at 8, 9, 10 years old, you have to hear that your life is worth something, that you are loved and cared for, and we are not saying that to them right now.”

Carol and her husband, Patrick, raised two sons. They’re now 17 and 20 years old.

Sometimes she worries about what kind of world they’ll live in and how they’ll be perceived as young black men, but she says she’s always been a positive person and encourages her children and others to keep striving to overcome.

“If they look at their history, they will know what we have come through, they will know how tall they should walk and how remarkable they should see themselves, that they and their ancestors survived the insurmountable,” Carol says.

A few years ago, Carol put all of her advice and feelings into a book entitled All I Ever Wanted. It’s her guidebook for relationships, marriage and family.

As we walk down the hall from our studio, wrapping up our interview, I apologize

for making it so serious. She laughs when I say, “I hope I don’t make you sound like Malcolm X.” She chuckles and replies, “Well, I crochet a lot too – does that help?”

Curfew Conflicts

urfew controversies cause contention between teens and parents for every generation. I remember negotiating nighttime boundaries with my parents, and now I’m negotiating the same with our kids.

Fortunately, my spouse and I have the upper hand since our boys can’t yet drive; soon, though, that will change.

Most adolescents consider curfews a parental power play. Teens focus more on their own freedom and independence than parental feelings. Nighttime rules, however, provide an opportunity to teach your child about limits, social responsibility and common courtesy – an important conversation to have.

So call a family meeting to discuss curfew boundaries.

As a good starting point, ask your teen what he or she considers a reasonable expectation, giving him or her a voice in the process. Advance discussions prevent future arguments, especially with so many things to consider as you set limits: For example, does your child have a weekend job, what time do most of his or her friends have to return home and what curfew regulations does your municipality impose?

In spite of the importance of clearly defining latenight expectations, avoid being too rigid. Most evenings should involve a specific time of return, but unique circumstances may mandate extended hours. As your child ages, a flexible curfew teaches responsibility, with your teen negotiating special situations like concerts, proms or late-night jobs. Soon enough, your emerging young adult will be attending college, and it’s best he or she understands how to make sensible decisions rather than go crazy with new-found freedom.

Once you’ve established the rules, determine curfew consequences with your teens’ assistance.

Formulating a punishment on the spot can produce a volatile and emotionally poor parenting decision. But there’s typically little argument when enacting a jointly created, predetermined rule, which will also motivate your child to return home on time.

If your child does return home past the designated hour, though, express your relief to him or her. Then, because heated late-night discussions are rarely productive, go to bed and discuss the situation in the morning. On occasion, some good reason may cause

Just as important as a curfew is the “check-in rule.”

Your child should say good night when he or she returns home, even if that means waking you. This not only gives you peace of mind, knowing your child is home, but also provides a reason for all teens to make good decisions – because they’ll have to talk to mom and dad before going to bed.

The core of imposing a curfew remains parental concern, and your teens should understand your worries. Explain that you trust them to make good decisions but fret about their safety and how others’ behavior may impact them. Respect your teens and they’ll respect your household rules.

For even agile, catlike car-lovers, the gM cadillac ct6 will have you barking its praises.

I

’ll get right to it: I like this big Caddy a lot.

But that’s not the headline – at least that’s not where my mind settled after an enjoyable three days behind the wheel. More than once I thought to myself, “This car does BMW better than BMW does BMW.” How could that be? Just a few short years ago, I was the loudest voice in the room promoting the Big Three automakers’ failure. Debating that point with me was like convincing a Cardinals fan to be happy for the Cubs. And before then, if you’d walked into a room with keys to a new GM product, you’d feel less verbally assaulted if you got on an elevator with George Carlin wearing too much cologne.

Yes, I was an automotive tyrant.

Tesla, Camaro, Brussels sprouts – I’ve espoused the power of human bias many times in the past, and the importance of being able to challenge such bias. As I’ve aged, my tyranny has faded into a passing holier-thanthouism. I don’t think I’m any less right; I just keep my mouth shut more often. But I have also discovered the surprising joy of discovering I’m wrong, as long as it’s not someone else telling me I’m wrong. Another example of that is the GM Cadillac ATS-V. The bullet-point summary of it: Buy one now! That car blew my socks off and made me realize GM has hired some top-flight talent to develop chassis dynamics and overall behindthe-wheel experience.

But the bigger the car, the larger the challenge in making it feel and drive small. And the CT6 is a big car, 204.1 inches from tip to tail. That’s longer than a three-row GMC Acadia. Compared to similarly sized BMW 7-series and Mercedes S-class, the CT6 drives like a much smaller car, perhaps the greatest engineering challenge in all of autodom. To accomplish that task, Cadillac employs a similar approach used with the ATS. It starts with a sublime chassis, known as the Omega platform, which is ultrarigid thanks to high-tensile steel in its central core, and keeps its polar moment of inertia down with ample use of aluminum around the perimeter. Underneath is a magnetic ride suspension that’s tuned for responsiveness but also knows how to coddle – a fine line to walk. Combined, along with some other AWD and rear-steering trickery, it’s the enthusiasm with how the CT6 drives that leaves a lasting impression. I live with a truly small and catlike, agile car every day. Comparatively, no, the CT6 doesn’t beg to have its tail wagged out navigating 20 mph switchbacks, but it does reward the driver who’s looking to hustle through them.

Under the hood is a twin-turbo, 3.0-liter V-6, one of the smaller engines in its class. But delivering 404 horsepower, it’s plenty mighty in the relatively lightweight CT6. Zero to 60 jaunts take just over five

seconds and get you through the ¼ mile at 105 mph in 13.5 seconds – both respectable, if not impressive, numbers. Turbo lag on throttle tip-in can be noticeable at times, but overall this engine impresses with its sublime smoothness and thrust delivery when needed.

The eight-speed ZF automatic transmission is the same as you’ll find in just about every competitor, and in the CT6, it is tuned to be nearly unnoticeable in operation. Only a few times did I feel a jerky onetwo shift at parking-lot speeds. Cadillac thought to give the driver paddle shifters on the wheel, which is a welcome addition. However, one of my very few complaints about the CT6 is that the combination of manual shifting and sport mode should deliver shifts the instant instructed, not some seemingly arbitrary amount of time afterward.

This is a luxury car first and foremost, and for most luxury buyers, the level of appointments and tech inside are where the rubber meets the road. I’ll admit the CT6 isn’t as opulent as a Mercedes S-class or as stylishly refined as an Audi A8, but taken on its own, the CT6 interior certainly fits the luxury billing. Talking tech, though, this car goes toe-to-toe with anything, especially when spec’d in Platinum level trim. Heated, ventilated and massaging seats make the driver and passenger feel special indeed. And this latest version of the Cadillac User Experience infotainment system is one of the best available at any price. A fully digital and very customizable driver’s display gives a slick polished feel, and the heads-up display is something that once you live with, you wonder how you ever lived without. I’ll run out of real estate quickly giving you a tech rundown, but I’ll say its success is just as much about how well it’s implemented, after it all worked seamlessly throughout my three-day crash course.

Just days earlier, I watched a friend kick repeatedly in an attempt to open the trunk lid on his Mercedes SL65, only to resort to his key fob with a grumble. My

first attempt on the CT6, not even knowing where the sensor might be, was met with success. One feature that bears mention, which I found by accident, was the integrated rearview mirror LCD. If you flip the toggle on the bottom of the mirror expecting a dimming effect, as I did, you’ll see instead a display created by the rear-mounted cameras, giving a very wide and clear view to the back. Groovy.

It seems Cadillac has been in perpetual comeback mode. The Cimmaron of the early ’80s has earned its place on just about every “worst-ever” list. Remember the Northstar motor? On paper they seemed like the ticket to earn Cadillac a spot at the luxury-makers table again, but that ticket ultimately proved as reliable as friends on moving day. And through those three decades, Cadillac was known for the ride quality of a waterbed down a marshmallow-paved highway. But I’m ready to fully commit now: The Cadillac comeback is complete. In fact, I believe this is the biggest automotive headline of the past 10 years. More than just Cadillacs, GM as a whole is making some of the best drivers’ cars available. I’ve often said there are only two companies that put the emotion of driving first: Porsche and Mazda. But now I have to add GM to that list. Yes, cats and dogs living together, mass hysteria and all that. Possibly the only bigger headline would be if Alfa Romeo, in its third attempt to penetrate the U.S. market, ends up on J.D. Power’s mostreliable list.

ow do you pronounce gyro, exactly?

Immediately dispelling any pronunciation misconceptions, brothers Mirza and Merim Imamovic cut right to the chase with the fun, phonetic name of their latest restaurant, Yiro/Gyro. The Bosnian natives have been making Mediterranean street eats since opening The Gyro Company with their mother in south St. Louis nine years ago; a second location opened in south St. Louis County two years ago.

Last year, though, their Yiro/Gyro debuted in downtown St. Louis proper, albeit with an approach slightly different from their previous restaurants’.

“We always wanted to be downtown, but never thought it was busy enough,” Mirza Imamovic, Yiro/ Gyro co-owner, says. “It’s a lot more vibrant now than

a few years ago, so we decided to give it a go.

“It’s very similar to our South County store – the same gyro meat, the same pita bread and things like that – but we just wanted to make it even faster for the lunch crowd downtown. People can come in there and be in and out in 15 minutes. We try to make everything assembly-line-style.”

The 2,300-square-foot space, which Imamovic says previously housed a jewelry store, got a modern makeover from a college friend, with 49 seats available in the gray-and-green dining room. Fresh herbs line the walls, along with framed photos of family and friends from both locations of the Gyro Company. A patio seats an additional 16 patrons.

Imamovic says his and his brother’s version of this street food, most popular in Germany, was the first of its kind in St. Louis.

‌Story: Seeking inspiration to write his next novel, American Clifford Bradshaw boards a train for Berlin in 1930. He’s quickly befriended by a German businessman who recommends a boardinghouse run by a woman named Fräulein Schneider.

Cliff finds the place and reaches a rent agreement with the genial landlady. On New Year’s Eve, he follows up on the businessman’s suggestion and visits the notorious Kit Kat Klub, where a leering master of ceremonies leads the club’s dancers in a number of risqué numbers. The Emcee also introduces an English singer named Sally Bowles, who then performs for the audience.

Sally spots Cliff in the room afterward and strikes up a conversation. When she’s abruptly fired by the club manager, she shows up at Cliff’s room and invites herself in for what turns out to be a long relationship.

Life is carefree and reckless in post-World War I Germany, but ominous signs abound with the rise of the National Socialist Party and its intolerance of minorities. Eventually, Fräulein Schneider’s Jewish suitor, Herr Schultz, is targeted, as are the gays and bohemians who frequent the Kit Kat Klub. The freewheeling lifestyle in Berlin is about to change while Cliff and Sally are “fast asleep.”

Highlights: Roundabout Theatre Company is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary with a return engagement of the 1998 Broadway production that garnered four Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical. The touring troupe presently performing at The Fabulous Fox Theatre offers a smashing and eerily relevant version of this enduring classic.

Other Info: Composer John Kander, lyricist Fred Ebb and writer Joe Masteroff combined on the 1966 Broadway musical that won eight Tonys, including Best Musical. They based their work on a play by John Van Druten called I Am a Camera that in turn had been inspired by Christopher Isherwood’s 1945 book The Berlin Stories, which recounted his time in Germany prior to World War II. Largely set in a decadent, no-holds-barred nightclub where inhibitions are left at the door, Cabaret seems strikingly relevant in this new touring presentation.

by Sam Mendes and co-directed by choreographer Rob Marshall, which ran for six years and 2,378 performances – the third longest-running revival in Broadway history and longer than the show’s original run of 1,166 performances three decades earlier.

Roundabout’s version includes an arresting, stark scenic design that accentuates the seedy atmosphere of the Kit Kat Klub, including having the band perform in its scanty wardrobe on the second tier of the set.

The ensemble features several stellar performances, led by Jon Peterson’s hedonistic and impish Emcee, a character who even saunters into the audience at the beginning of Act II for some of his trademark double entendres, which permeate Masteroff’s script.

Peterson sets the tempo with his lusty rendition of “Willkommen” at the musical’s start, but he’s just as prominent in the work’s increasingly dark second act when he dances with a woman in a gorilla costume in the damning “If You Could See Her,” which underscores the deadly destruction about to be inflicted on the people unwelcome in Hitler’s Third Reich.

Cabaret is perpetually veering into the forebodingly repressive politics in Germany as Hitler rises to power.

On the outside, the likes of Ernst Ludwig and his menacing cohorts are growing in size and intolerance, as evidenced by the nasty crescendo that culminates the ominous “Tomorrow Belongs to Me” number at Act I’s conclusion.

Mary Gordon Murray and Scott Robertson share an easy chemistry as the aged romantics Fräulein Schneider and Herr Schultz, highlighted by the joy that the former, a fruit vendor, conveys to the latter with the gift of a rare pineapple.

At the center of the action are engaging performances

by Benjamin Eakeley as Cliff and Leigh Ann Larkin as Sally. Eakeley walks a fine line, capturing both the writer’s bisexual drive and his reserved nature. As Bowles, Larkin shows us, in equal doses, the songbird’s irrepressible spirit and self-destructive nature.

When Sally croons the title song, she’s almost imploring the audience to remain in the good old days.

This stylish, savage production of Cabaret will make you glad you did.

ur nation collectively is drowning in a riptide of high-fructose corn syrup, often overcharged with caffeine and chemicals, and Angela Zeng wants to throw Americans a life preserver.

Zeng serves as the chief executive officer of the startup beverage company Karuna, which she founded with her husband, Dr. Shawn Hu. She characterizes him as “a well-respected and experienced medical oncologist in St. Louis who has provided us with in-depth knowledge in medical and nutritional sciences, guided our ingredient selection and optimized the nutritional composition of our products.”

Like her co-founder, Zeng herself can lay claim to fairly impressive credentials.

More specifically – and intriguingly if incongruously – she holds a Ph.D. in pathology from Saint Louis University’s School of Medicine, with a focus on cell motility and its relationship to cancer.

Assisting the couple at Karuna are Dr. Zebin Wang and Dr. Xi Wu, both of whom earned their doctorates in food science from Indiana’s prestigious Purdue University. The former, Zeng says, “played a key role in our product development,” adding that he also “worked as a research scientist/senior research investigator for DuPont Nutrition & Health for over 10 years”; the latter recently joined Karuna as its research-and-development/ production specialist.

So, let’s pop the cap and drink deeply, shall we?

“I have always had the idea of developing a line of healthy food products based on ancient East Asian recipes,” Zeng relates of the process of conceiving and actualizing Karuna. “What has motivated me to finally start the company was seeing some disturbing trends in the natural-food market, especially the recent rise of cold-pressed juice products, which not only often contain high levels of added sugar but also create a huge amount of waste of valuable food plants and natural resources.

“The Karuna brand was created about a year ago, after we developed the prototype of our first product, a [mung] bean sprout and Aronia berry drink, by utilizing two highly renewable natural ingredients with proven health benefits. This Karuna signature product highlighted our success in combining ancient healing wisdom with modern nutritional science while shouldering our social and environmental responsibilities as a natural food producer.”

Regarding theoretically similar offerings from, say, Naked, Bolthouse Farms or Evolution Fresh, Zeng briefly contrasts Karuna and its potential competitors regarding felicities of mouthfeel.

“From the beginning, we wanted to make sure that all our products had a genuinely natural taste that comes directly from the food ingredients themselves without adding any sugar or ‘natural flavors,’” she says. “Many current natural drinks on the market are so-called ‘formulated’ products that are made of various protein and food extracts. Those products have to rely on added sugar and many other additives to generate consistency and simulated flavors. That has given those products a rather chalky taste and texture.

“In contrast to those products, all of our shakes and drinks come from simple food ingredients in their natural forms, without any added sugar or artificial materials. They offer a uniquely pleasant taste, with layers of flavor reflecting the synergy among the different natural plants in our drinks.”

Ah, yes – those natural plants. In the context of nature-based, nutritional beverages like Karuna’s, St. Louisans who know, say, cherries and bananas and blueberries might feel qualms about some Karuna ingredients – qualms that Zeng addresses.

ancient folk medicine literatures, mung bean sprouts have been widely consumed in many Asian countries for their ‘detoxifying’ benefits,” Zeng says.

“Nowadays, they’ve become more and more popular with consumers around the world, and you can find them in virtually all grocery stores. They’re often used in salads or served as a low-carb and high-protein vegetable dish.”

Zeng then cites herbalists and scientists alike regarding mung bean sprouts’ use in treating various complaints (upset stomachs, for instance) and metabolic merits (antioxidants, for example).

Consider, as well, Aronia berries, not exactly an offering likely to rival raspberries and blackberries at the corner smoothie joint.

“Aronia – chokeberry – is a native North American plant [that] has long been used in many Native American folk remedies to combat colds and other infections,” Zeng relates. “It truly is a nutrition powerhouse by all standards. The Aronia berry has the highest content of antioxidants among all fruits. In addition, the Aronia berry is rich in potassium, vitamin C, magnesium and iron.

“Preliminary studies of Aronia berry in cells and animal models have linked its positive effects on treating chronic inflammation, such as arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease; infection, such as urinary tract infection; and heavy metal intoxication.

“The reason that Aronia berry hasn’t been widely consumed is largely due to its astringent taste. Thanks to Karuna’s proprietary blending technique, the fusion of mung bean sprout and Aronia berry juice has generated a pleasant and refreshing flavor that’s very unique. More importantly, this drink has capitalized on those incredible nutritional benefits and created a super detox drink with the power of antioxidants, protein and iron.

Another Karuna ingredient unlikely to grace parfaits in area Dairy Queen Blizzards anytime soon: the longan.

“Stories about the longan berry are legendary, and it used to be a sacred fruit served exclusively to the emperors and royalties in many Asian countries,” Zeng says. “This flavorful tropical fruit is thought by many to promote qi and blood, which mean ‘energy’ and ‘endurance’ in traditional Chinese medicine. Rich in vitamins B and C, iron, copper and other minerals, the longan berry is known to provide antioxidant effects, help blood cell production and bone strengthening, and prevent eye disease.”

Finally, although most Missourians appreciate standard soybeans, certain Karuna offerings haze the landscape, oddly enough, with overspecificity by citing black soybeans.

“Rich in protein, fiber, vitamin A, folic acid, antioxidants, calcium, magnesium, iron and other minerals, the soybean has been an integral part of people’s daily diet in Asia and many other parts of the world for thousands of years,” Zeng says. “It’s one of the very few plants on earth that contain all the essential amino acids that are equal to animal proteins. Among all soybeans, the black soybean is arguably the healthiest because of its antioxidant, rich, dark surface and high protein content. Numerous studies have linked black soybeans to potential benefits in lowering cholesterol, preventing heart disease and reducing inflammation.”

As Karuna’s chief executive officer, she next sketches some fairly forward-looking plans for its first five years. “Our current focus is to ensure a successful launch of the Karuna brand in the St. Louis market while preparing to enter regional and nationwide retail chains in a six- to 12-month period,” Zeng says of her company’s products, which can be purchased at select Dierbergs Markets, United Provisions and Whole Foods Market.

“In order to meet the rapidly evolving needs of American consumers, we’re actively developing new products to expand our appeal. We anticipate a round of fundraising by the end of the year and [then] building another production facility in the metro St. Louis area.”

The company’s name, incidentally, derives from the Sanskrit term karunā, . a concept important in Buddhism.

“I think that it’s important to point out that, at the core, Buddhism is more about a philosophy rather than a strict religious doctrine,” Zeng says. “The four fundamental lifelong pursuits in Buddhism are, first, to show kindness and mercy to everything around you, maitrī; secondly, to be compassionate towards people, animals and all living things, karunā; . thirdly, to find happiness and joy from all aspects of a person’s life, mudita; and finally, to seek equanimity, balance and peace with the world you’re living in, upeksha.

“All of these are what people from every religion and background would be striving for, and that’s exactly why Buddhist philosophy has such broad appeal. We believe that practicing karunā . – to show compassion toward our own health and others’ well-being, to care about animals and the environment around us – is the message of our brand that will resonate with everyone in our society.”

Finally, treating Karuna products with a blanket recusal, Zeng names her personal go-to beverage.

“Kombucha is the drink I grew up with and is one of my favorites,” Zeng confesses, referencing various fermented, lightly effervescent sweetened tea drinks that reportedly originated in northeast Asia more than two millennia ago. “My parents used to make kombucha at home, which is a much stronger version than those currently available on the market.”

Then, with CEO canniness, Zeng adds, “I also like [other] tea drinks, and we’re working on developing a unique line of Karuna tea products.”

I also help people maintain their standard of living in the event of a work-ending disability or need for long-term care.

WHEN DID YOU DECIDE ON THIS CAREER? As a third-generation financial advisor who married an advisor, I like to say it’s in my lifeblood. Growing up, I heard countless stories of families that would have suffered financial devastation or businesses that would have folded, absent my father or grandfather’s guidance. These stories made me appreciate the profound difference an advisor can make in people’s lives and motivated me to follow in their footsteps.

DO YOU HAVE A PERSONAL MOTTO? I try to make the most out of each day, and I wholeheartedly believe that by helping clients make, save and keep more of their money, I help them get the most out of their days as well.

For me, getting the most out of a day could mean anything from designing an investment strategy to help a client achieve their goals, to squeezing in an early morning bike ride, to spending quality time with my lovely wife, Wendy, and our precious daughter, Kennedy.
