EDITOR ‌DOGS ARE SELFLESS CREATURES. THEY ARE YOUR FRIEND, defender and partner-in-crime. They lie by your side when you are sick or down, but will gladly romp and play when there’s time to mess around. Their love is unconditional, and one local organization clearly thinks so, too.

That organization is Got Your Six, a nonprofit providing specialized service dogs to veterans and first responders who are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and/or sexual trauma.

Since its inception in 2015, Got Your Six has placed approximately 20 dogs with veterans and first responders that are making a difference in their owners’ lives. Read more about this touching tail – I mean, tale – starting on p. 46.

Also in this edition, learn more about the newest shop to debut in Webster Groves: Civil Alchemy.

We’re Sorry: In the Feb. 2 edition of Ladue News, the Falconer family’s last name was incorrectly spelled in our We Love Our Neighborhoods special section. We apologize for the oversight.

Two St. Louis natives will be returning home to perform as part of the U.S. Navy Concert Band: musicians First Class Jenny Stokes, of Webster Groves, and Jason Niehoff, of St. Louis. The concert, which is scheduled for March 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the Touhill Performing Arts Center at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, is one of 21 concerts in 12 states during the Navy’s 2018 tour. Stokes joined the Navy band in 2009 after graduating from Webster Groves High School and receiving both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in music from New England Conservatory in Boston. Niehoff joined the Navy band in 2007 as a percussionist, graduated from Fort Zumwalt South High School, and earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in from the Manhattan School of Music.

riends of Wings’ 16th annual Big Bear Brunch recently took place at The Chase Park Plaza in its Khorassan Ballroom.

The event has become a holiday tradition for many grandparents, parents and children. It began with just 100 attendees and now annually sells out with more than 500 guests. The day’s activities included everything from doughnut-decorating to arts and crafts to balloon creations to face-painting to dancing. Some attending children danced with the St. Louis Cardinals’ Fredbird and the St. Louis Blues’ Louie the Bear, as well as many princesses and superheroes. Everyone then brunched. Entertained by dancers from St. Ann’s U Can Dance Studio, guests enjoyed dinner and a program aimed at supporting COPE24’s mission: equipping young adults with skills to become better parents than previous generations (hence COPE, short for “Changing Our Parenting Experience”).

n December, Stray Rescue of St. Louis held its annual holiday gala at The Chase Park Plaza in St. Louis’ Central West End neighborhood.

Themed “20 Years of Hope & Rescue,” the event showcased how Stray Rescue has benefited the treatment of stray, abused, and neglected dogs and cats in St. Louis, as well as how the organization has grown and evolved through the years. Guests initially enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres while bidding on silent auction items. Then, in the main ballroom, Juliana and Seamus Devers welcomed everyone. After a video showing events from the past 20 years, Mark Scott, president of Stray Rescue’s board, presented founder Randy Grim with the inaugural Randolph A. Grim Lifetime Achievement Award. An In Memoriam Award also went to Grim fils for his mother, P.J. Grim, with a second such award going to the Leiber family in memory of Mary Leiber. After dinner, guests enjoyed a live auction and raffle. Stray Rescue believes every animal to be an individual and should be treated as such. It seeks to restore all rescued animals to health, both mentally and physically, before helping them find individual “forever homes.”

It was amazing to see our 600-plus guests at the ‘20 Years of Hope & Rescue’ Holiday Gala as we celebrated such an important milestone in Stray Rescue history! It was an emotional and inspiring evening filled with laughter, tears, friendship and hope. It was a night to remember! We’re so grateful to the St. Louis community for supporting our life-saving work at Stray Rescue and loving the animals just like we do.

etta Leritz of Castle Design had been working with a pair of Ladue clients over the course of several years, helping update their house room by room over time.

For their latest project, Leritz helped the young couple redo their living room.

“We almost started from scratch with this space,” she says. “We had the sofa, but that was the only key element that had to stay.”

The living room was initially a formal space, but the clients wanted to transform the space into something more familyfriendly – a space where both the parents could entertain and their kids could read or play board games.

“We kind of reimagined the floor plan,” Leritz says. “We added a game table, crown molding, custom bookshelves.”

The custom bookshelves backed with a gorgeous blue wallpaper became a focal point for the room, along with graphic elements in pillows and fabrics.

“Our color palette was playing into that mix of kid-friendly and adult-friendly,” Leritz says.

Lifestyle retailer Civil Alchemy creates hominess and a home for itself in Webster Groves.

T

here’s a new kind of general store in town: Civil Alchemy. Located along Big Bend Boulevard in the heart of Webster Groves, Civil Alchemy is a friendly neighborhood stop with all the unique essentials for your everyday lifestyle. “We strive to be timeless, sturdy and functional – but also aesthetically pleasing,” says founder and owner Kelley Barr. “Our vision is to bridge the gap between items looking good and being useful.”

Barr, who has more than 25 years of experience in the retail arena, from product design to curation, is the founder and former owner of St. Louis-based K. Hall Studio, a 20-year-old handcrafted personal-care goods company, which she and her husband, John, sold in 2015. As business-savvy parents to five children, the Barrs grew the K. Hall brand from their basement to international success, all through what they call a commitment to simple, ethical and generous living and quality, natural and recyclable products. “After selling K. Hall … and taking a retail hiatus, we were ready to work in a smaller, more personal environment,” Barr says.

With Civil Alchemy, Barr is back in the curated product game – this time, with that decidedly more personal approach. “We wanted to create a retail space that focused on functionality, quality and aesthetic – and we wanted to do it in our neighborhood, [Webster Groves],” Barr says. “We were really attracted to the corner stores or general stores that have slowly disappeared. There is an element of customer-friendliness, authenticity and purity that is really unique to Main Street, and we felt there was a craving for this in our community.”

Barr says the name Civil Alchemy refers to “a civic responsibility to our neighborhood and our classic Main Street to curate and create simple goods [that] are functional, consumable or enjoyable – yet enlightened [and] meant to inspire those everyday functions with a positive experience by offering items for your home, your events and your hobbies.”

The lifestyle retailer, which officially opened in September, offers a curated collection from housewares and apparel to specialty foods and beverages. “A few [U.S.-made] items that we are very excited about are Steele Canvas [baskets and tote bags] and our [Civil Alchemy] collection of pure linen sheets, towels and other bedding,” Barr says. “We also offer wool-felted rugs, letterpress stationery and felt bags of our own designs.”

Although many of the shop’s products are made in the U.S., Civil Alchemy also has a global flavor, with home décor sourced from Japan, as well as linens from Lithuania and Belgium; pottery from the United Kingdom and France; slippers from Morocco; cleaning tools from Germany; wool from Nepal; and brass, glass, jewelry and leather from India.

Another unique aspect of the shop is its fresh flower bar, where customers can create floral arrangements in their own vases or one from the store’s selection, Barr adds.

And for the new year, Barr says customers should keep their eyes peeled for some new Civil Alchemy-brand products, which will include the expansion of its specialty food and beverage line of jams, syrups and chocolates, with the debut of Civil Alchemy Truly Floral Blue #5 Gin. “We are currently waiting on approval to sell, but we already have a very long preorder list,” she notes.

The neighborhood store also has events, including workshops, tastings and classes, in the works for spring, as well as an expanded outdoor living collection hitting its shelves, Barr says.

“We are an outdoor-loving family, and … I feel it adds so much to real life and happiness, closing the circle of this lifestyle Main Street general store.”

In addition to the general store, the Barrs have extended their neighborhood footprint with the purchase of multiple other occupied and unoccupied retail spaces along Webster Groves’ main thoroughfare of Big Bend Boulevard. This spring, Barr will be assisting her husband as he opens The Frisco Barroom, a rustic American, corner tavern-style restaurant and bar complete with an outdoor beer garden and rooftop deck, at 8110 Big Bend Blvd. Although plans for the other spaces are still “in the think tank,” Barr says there’s more to come: “Stay tuned!”

Beth Styles, co-owner of Parsimonia Vintage in St. Louis’ Tower Grove East neighborhood, seems a true romantic, a visionary on a mission to help women find vintage pieces that accentuate the natural curves of their bodies. Located on South Grand, the eclectic brick-and-mortar shop grew from highly successful online and mobile pop-up stores.

Ladue News talked to Styles about the transformation of Parsimonia and the vintage pieces she hopes will make you feel not only beautiful but also confident.

Tell our readers a little about Parsimonia.

We like to curate vintage pieces we feel you can mix and match into a modern-day wardrobe. One of the misconceptions of vintage stores is that it’s all costume or really kitschy stuff, but we try really hard to show people that there is a place for this unique kind of clothing in modern wardrobe.

How would you describe your store?

It’s a colorful shop – definitely eclectic. The inventory is mostly women’s ready-to-wear pieces, and we even do slight alterations. Dresses and skirts are our bestsellers, but we also have some newer, complementary items: some jewelry made in-house, jewelry from local artists, body and face products, nail polish. We’ve been bringing in some new lines that have a vintage style, brands like Meek Vintage and ModCloth.

Where do you source most of Parsimonia’s inventory?

We have on our website, if people are interested in selling pieces, they can make a buying appointment to bring them in.

Sometimes we have people bring in a relative’s pieces and want a place for them where customers will really appreciate the style and its sentimental value.

How did you expand from a mobile store to a brickand-mortar on South Grand?

My husband encouraged me to seek out a career that would make me happy for the rest of my life. I got into thrifting when I was young, and I had always loved vintage clothes. I grew up around women and family members who were always well put together. After the Etsy shop explosion, I decided to create an online store, and after realizing that food trucks were becoming big in St. Louis, I launched a vintage pop-up shop in a 1960s travel trailer named Holly. After a few years of hard work, the perfect spot opened up on South Grand, and I’ve been here ever since.

Who inspires your style and why?

I’m always ingesting the current trends, but I don’t read many fashion magazines. Getting dressed in the morning is kind of the outlet for my creativity. I get dressed for myself. I appreciate it when my husband thinks I look nice, but I dress in the way that makes

What is your go-to look?

I’m crazy for patterns and color. I love the styles of the ’50s and ’70s because I’ve learned they accentuate my curvy body in a flattering way. I love the fitted bodice, fitted waist and full skirt of the ’50s. The other iconic style I love is the Marilyn Monroe look: the fitted swivel dress. It lays in a way that accentuates and complements my curves.

Daily Disco designs feature modern-day retro flair.

I

n an era of Marie Kondo minimalism and monochromatic capsule wardrobing, a little color and kitsch can make a bold, even refreshing statement. Take, for example, what many of us might consider a childhood relic of the ’90s (or, as cyclical fashion goes, the ’50s and ’60s): carefully curated patches and buttons on a favorite denim jacket, the selfidentifying embroidery of Grease’s Pink Ladies or the outerwear that marries both – a varsity letter jacket, a veritable wearable scrapbook of one’s persona.

Designers have begun to breathe new life into this vestige of the past in recent years, with models sporting colorful pins and patches as they strut runways for DKNY, Marc Jacobs and Miu Miu. And locally, designer Abbey Eilermann of kitsch-tastic Daily Disco has been rocking the boat of fashion neutrality with her bold embroidery, custom-designed patches and enamel pins.

Eilermann’s designs are a far cry from understated – in her world, after all, a cat named Dolly Purton serves as mascot and pink, in the right applications, can be used as a neutral. This larger-than-life Daily Disco style has caught the attention of not only

enthusiastic customers across the country but also André Leon Talley, the former editor-at-large of Vogue. Eilermann’s senior collection was featured in the highly selective Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) fashion show, and after the show, she was approached by Miss J (J. Alexander, perhaps best known for his work on the reality-TV program America’s Next Top Model), who informed her that Talley wanted to see her.

Eilermann and another student were invited to Talley’s apartment to review their collections. “It was crazy,” Eilermann says. “He put me and one of my good friends on this bus, and it was us, Miss J, [designer] Vivienne Westwood and the president of SCAD. It still doesn’t seem real.” As a result of that encounter, her collection, “Fiesta Forever: Mexico Meets Disco,” was featured in the magazine Teen Vogue and on elle. com in 2015. “It was exciting seeing my work in publications that I had been reading forever,” Eilermann recalls.

Following her graduation from SCAD in 2015, Eilermann went on to study at

Ecole Lesage in Paris, the prestigious haute couture embroidery house of Louis Vuitton, Chanel and more. Eilermann cites her art teacher at Whitfield School in Creve Coeur, Ann Kram, as the one who first encouraged her to attend fashion school. “I don’t think I was as technically talented in art as some other students, but I was really creative, [and she saw that] and encouraged me to go to fashion school,” Eilermann says.

After the November 2015 Paris terror attacks, Eilermann moved back home to St. Louis.

“I didn’t know what I was going to do, so I started having fun with Instagram,” she says. “I was creating art and sharing it on Instagram and started to get more followers – I remember hitting 1,000 [followers], and it was a big deal! That’s really how Daily Disco started; I started making things, and people wanted them.

“I started with pins and now do embroidery – jackets and things to put on the jackets,” Eilermann continues. “We do patches, pins and custom-embroidered jackets. The custom jackets are all one of a kind.” Customers send in their favorite jacket to the Daily Disco embroidery studio, located on The Hill neighborhood of St. Louis, and Eilermann works with her employee and teammate, Claire Boxdorfer, to sketch a design. Then Eilermann does the patchwork and embroidery and sends the finished product back to the customer. Although most of her work is bespoke product, she does carry her own lines of pins and flair and patches.

“My last little collection was vintage Vegas-inspired – I have a couple pins from that, [including] a sparkly cigarette and some [tiny replica] neon signs,” Eilermann says.

“Right now, we’re expanding our bridal collection – our ‘just married’ iron-on patch is our best-seller.”

Other designs include whimsical mermaids and unicorns, personalized with names or slogans, with some especially cheeky patchand-embroidery matchups, like “Dolce and Banana” with a banana patch, or the “funky chicken” jacket she designed for her mom – “funky” in bold red embroidery, with a giant chicken patch sewn in just below. One of her favorites – of course – is a jacket she did for herself of Dolly Parton. Eilermann gets to be part of some great stories for families across the country, designing a custom jacket gifted to a customer’s newly adopted daughter or one inspired by a 50-year-old postcard from Mexico.

Eilermann’s embroidery is not your basic monogram work, either. She works with four hand-cranked chain stitch machines, dating from the late 1800s to the 1950s. “[The machines are] geared underneath with a wheel,” Eilermann says. “I think of it as a nice way to mix hand embroidery and machine embroidery – it’s like painting with thread; there are no hard edges, and you create everything with tiny circles. It’s a slow practice – they can take up to 10 hours to do – but I love being able to create almost like wearable art for people.” The process, which Eilermann shows in little video snippets on her Instagram feed, is a mesmerizing circular stitching motion that, in effect, “paints” the thread on the fabric. The result is more durable, keepsake-quality embroidery.

Custom orders take about four to six weeks to complete, with some design inspiration on the Daily Disco website, Etsy page and Instagram. Pins and patches are ready to order through both the Daily Disco website and Etsy page.

Disco’s flair is anything but rote and requisite – it is, in Eilermann’s own words, “serious fun.”

The bride-to-be earned her master’s degree in 2017 from Fontbonne University.

Demi is a speech and language pathologist for the Parkway School District.

The couple met in 2015 through mutual friends. Kyle had his work cut out for him when it came time to propose, as his future wife is notoriously hard to surprise.

While staying at the Hyatt Regency Indianapolis for a girls’ weekend with her Nest restaurant on the 22nd floor. Prior to the elevator doors sliding open, Demi had confessed the excursion to be “the best weekend of my life.” A surprise proposal definitely topped the cake! Kyle and Demi will marry on July 7 in Detroit and will reside in Des Peres.

Andouille Chicken Sausage and Farro Skillet

f you love quinoa, try switching things up this month with another popular ancient grain: farro. With a chewy, almost pastalike texture and mild flavor, farro provides a hearty base for grain bowls or salads and can also replace noodles or rice in your favorite dishes.

In this simple skillet recipe, farro is prepared in chicken broth and mixed with cooked andouille chicken sausage.

Whether made to celebrate Mardi Gras or just to form a comforting weeknight dinner, this easy meal should make you a fan of farro.

ANDOUILLE CHICKEN SAUSAGE AND FARRO SKILLET Farro absorbs moisture and doubles in size as it cooks, so use a pot large enough to hold twice the size of dry farro.

Serves | 4 to 6 | 1 cup farro, thoroughly rinsed 1 small yellow onion, 2½ cups low-sodium chicken broth or water 2 Tbsp olive oil 1 12-oz rope andouille

coarsely chopped 1 15-oz can diced tomatoes 1 Tbsp fresh basil, roughly chopped

chicken sausage, sliced into

2 cloves garlic, minced

¼-inch-thick coins

½ tsp red pepper flakes

2 red or orange bell peppers, seeded and coarsely chopped

s alt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

| Preparation | In a large stockpot over medium-high heat, add farro to chicken broth or salted water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 30 minutes or until all liquid is absorbed. If some liquid remains after 30 minutes, strain farro in a fine-mesh colander. Remove from heat.

In a large skillet over medium heat, heat olive oil. Add chicken sausage slices, and sauté until browned, 5 minutes. Add bell pepper and onion to skillet, and sauté until tender, about 5 minutes. Add tomatoes with juice, basil, garlic, red pepper flakes and cooked farro. Stir until combined and cook on low for 5 minutes or until fully heated. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Divide farro and andouille evenly into 4 to 6 serving bowls.

Season with more salt and pepper to taste and serve.

shepherd mix lived in the U.S. Virgin Islands’ St. Thomas as an emotional support dog. When multiple hurricanes hit the Virgin Islands in the latter part of 2017, her owner could no longer care for the pup. Andy was picked up by Love for Love City, a rescue organization founded by country music star Kenny Chesney to help rescue pets lost or abandoned in Hurricane Irma. Andy came to the contiguous United States by plane and ended up in a place where her emotional support skills could be put to use: Delmar Gardens of Chesterfield.

Delmar Gardens of Chesterfield started fostering puppies three years ago. The program was met with enthusiasm from the residents, and the community cared for 10 sets of puppies until they were adopted out. Stray Rescue of St. Louis approached the senior community about fostering older dogs, and the Delmar Gardens activity director, Jenni Ferguson, welcomed the idea.

Four-year-old Andy came to Delmar Gardens around three months ago, and the center’s staff knew right away she was a perfect fit for the residents.

“She was here probably only four hours until we knew we wanted to keep her,” Ferguson says. “It was an instant connection with everyone.”

Andy spends most of her time in Delmar Gardens’ specialized care unit, where she

bonds with residents who have Alzheimer’s, dementia and other memory impairments.

Katie Claus, a music therapist in the specialized care unit, says the residents love to take care of Andy as if she’s their dog.

“From the first moment we brought her in, she strutted around the whole building with her tail wagging and was comfortable being there,” Claus says.

“She’s bonded with all of the residents in the specialized care unit, and there are three in particular that she’ll curl up next to. The residents’ faces light up when they see her. She’s so good with them.”

The residents love to feed Andy. Ferguson even cites one resident who will try to hide food for Andy in her walker.

“Andy will go up to the residents and put her head under their hand,” Ferguson says. “When she wants attention, she’ll put her paw on their leg. It creates a more homelike environment for the residents because they feel like they’re taking care of her.”

While talking to a resident one day about Andy, Claus says they summed the dog’s life at Delmar Gardens perfectly: “Andy’s a big kid that belongs to everyone here.”

Although Andy goes on walks throughout the whole Delmar Gardens complex, she always makes her way back toward the specialized care unit. Ferguson says she “wants to get back to her people.”

“It’s like she was meant to walk in our doors,” Ferguson says. “She’s like an angel dog.”

ogs have a unique ability to comfort and heal in a way that most other animals can’t.

Nicole Lanahan knows this. She’s been a dog trainer for 20 years and seen firsthand the effect four-legged friends can have on the people around them. For the last two decades, Lanahan has trained service dogs, police dogs and military dogs alike – but in the last five years, began receiving inquiries about post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) service dogs specifically.

“I was doing my best to refer them to other local organizations, but I’d hear back from [the caller] saying there was a five-year waiting list or [the organization] wanted to charge $20,000,” Lanahan recalls.

Lanahan’s final straw fell when a veteran called her crying, asking why Lanahan couldn’t help her.

“The next day, I went to my accountant and filed a 501(c)(3),” she says.

Thus, Got Your Six Support Dogs was born.

Lanahan took a two-week workshop from This Able Veteran in Carbondale, Illinois. She was greatly “impressed and in awe” of its program and knew it was what she wanted to model Got Your Six after. (Incidentally, the name Got Your Six gives a nod to the military: It’s a phrase that was first used among fighter pilots in World War II. When airborne, they talked about where they were in relation to the hands of an analog clock, so “got your six” means “got your back.”)

Got Your Six’s mission is to provide specialized service dogs to veterans and first responders suffering from PTSD and/or sexual trauma. With roughly 22 veterans nationwide committing suicide every day, according to a 2013 study by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, organizations like Got Your Six can help veterans relearn the basic human feelings they might have had to suppress in their time of service.

The nonprofit started with just Lanahan and a few

volunteers and now has more than 100 volunteers.

They currently place six dogs with veterans per year, with preference to local applicants – last year was 50 percent local, 50 percent elsewhere – and with a longterm goal to double that number to two classes of six dogs per year. Since its inception in 2015, Got Your Six has been able to place approximately 20 dogs with veterans and first responders.

To be considered for a support dog through Got Your Six, interested and eligible individuals are asked to fill out an extensive application that allows the group to get to know a given candidate. On

the other end of the program, the organization’s dogs are trained for an entire year leading up to a possible pairing.

“We know a [support dog] alone isn’t going to cure someone from PTSD,” Lanahan says. “They’re getting a whole toolbox to combat PTSD, not just a dog.”

Over a 10-day period, dogs are matched with individual applicants. The veterans attend a daily trauma resiliency/suicide prevention course during this 10-day period, led by a licensed therapist.

Pairing a candidate with a dog is a case-by-case matchmaking process. Lanahan says if an applicant

is antisocial, he or she will be paired with an outgoing dog. If someone is considered rough around the edges, he or she will be paired with a more affectionate dog.

If someone is fearful, he or she will be paired with a more confident dog.

“Opposites really do attract in this case,” Lanahan says.

Got Your Six mainly uses Labradors and golden retrievers as support dogs. The organization primarily works with breeders who have a history of breeding service dogs, but occasionally will work with and train rescue retrievers, too.

The group’s dogs are trained to help break down the barriers the veterans and first responders might have built over time.

They have learned to perform medical tasks, awaken their owners during night terrors, do compression therapy, retrieve items like cellphones and remain alert to anxiety. Their training is tailored to their individual owners’ needs, so a dog will learn what the beginning of a particular person’s anxiety looks like to help recognize and de-escalate it.

This extensive training comes at a price, though. Each dog costs the organization approximately $20,000 to train, and Got Your Six relies on fundraisers, donations and grants to cover these hefty costs. One such fundraiser is its upcoming trivia night on Feb. 24. Although it’s sold out, Lanahan says the organization is always looking for silent auction items and donations to help cover the cost of providing dogs to veterans and first responders free of charge.

The 2018 pairing program will take place July 29 through Aug. 7, and applications must be received by June 15.

llison Schreiber Lee is a straight shooter. “People need to find a lawyer they can trust. Someone who is going to be supportive, but is also going to talk to them very frankly,” says Lee. As a family law practitioner at Paule, Camazine & Blumenthal, P.C., Lee specializes in high-conflict custody and high-asset divorce cases.

The kinds of cases that Lee tackles often involve difficult issues: mental health problems, alcohol and substance addictions, and allegations of abuse. “I deal with a lot of alcohol cases and people dealing with a spouse’s alcoholism,” she says. Lee also frequently handles “cases in which some type of personality disorder is at play.”

Clients with unreasonable expectations, in terms of maintenance, child support or custody plans, will find a much-needed voice of reason in Lee. In order to provide her clients with a more probable view of life

after divorce, Lee is very realistic with them. “I’m not one of those lawyers who’s going to just tell my client ‘I’ll do the best I can’ if their requests are unrealistic,” she underscores. “I will tell people what they need – not what they want – to hear.”

Lee’s unique mixture of empathy and candor is borne from both life and professional experience. As a child, Lee weathered her own parents’ contentious divorce, an ordeal which palpably impacts the counsel she now provides to clients. “Because I lived through divorce as a child, I advise my clients from the perspective of what’s in the best interest of the children,” Lee says. “I can also help them find counseling for their children.”

Lee is also a divorced, working parent, and has been so for many years. She is able to relate to what her clients are going through, and she intimately understands how much fear the divorce process inspires. “Am I going to stay in the same

’Acadiane – which takes its name from the Cajun French term for Acadiana, the south Louisiana region containing a large Frenchspeaking populace – features a full menu of Cajun and Creole-influenced dishes from New Orleans and environs.

This latest addition to the Baileys’ Restaurants group opened in December in St. Louis’ Lafayette Square neighborhood, in the main-floor space previously occupied by Baileys’ Chocolate Bar, which, in July, had been consolidated into the building’s secondstory lounge.

“We were thinking about the history of the neighborhood, the Acadian influence and the connection between New Orleans and St. Louis,” says Dave Bailey, who co-owns the restaurant with his wife,

L’Acadiane’s approximately 1,300 square feet seats around 70 guests with another eight at the bar, as well as a patio. The Baileys looked to New Orleans as well as the neighborhood’s historical aspects for design inspiration. To that end, the interior features such elements as exposed brick, a bar finished with decorative black-and-white tile and elegant embellishments juxtaposed with plants and flowers.

“We wanted the atmosphere to be very beautiful, but we also wanted people to feel totally comfortable coming as they are,” Bailey says. “It’s a laid-back atmosphere, but also lively and fun, where people can come to have a decadent meal and a nice, strong cocktail.”

Appetizers include fried green tomatoes, hot link corn dogs and lump crabcake with blood orange supremes, avocado and remoulade. A selection of po’boys includes options like slow-roasted pork shoulder with roasted peppers, crème fraîche and salsa verde, as well as blackened Acadian redfish with romaine, pickled onion and cucumber ranch. Soups and salads include house gumbo, crawfish bisque and a frisée salad with poached egg, lardon, chive and herbes du jardin dressing.

“It’s just a type of cuisine that I absolutely love,” Bailey says. “We’re able to sort of play with classic dishes and bring something new to the table.”

‌Story: With so many people out of work, the Great Depression is a particularly challenging time in America. For 10-year-old Bud in 1936, though, it’s especially tough. Since his mother died, he’s been shifted between orphanages and foster homes while holding onto the hope that eventually he’ll come in contact with his long-absent father.

As fate would have it, Bud (who insists on being referred to as that and definitely not as Buddy) ends up in the company of a traveling band of merry musicians who move throughout the Midwest, including Bud’s home of Flint, Michigan. Known as the Dusky Devastators of the Depression, they’re led by Herman E. Calloway, whom Bud surmises from an advertising flyer must be his father.

Naturally, Calloway isn’t amused by Bud’s insistence that he’s the boy’s dad. Others in the band, though, including the kindly singer Miss Thomas, welcome him with open arms. They even give Bud a recorder to test his mettle and his desire to join them in their musical endeavors.

As bad as the Great Depression is, it’s even worse for the band members of the mostly black band, who are accustomed to prejudice on their tours in the Midwest. They rely on their only white player, pianist Dirty Deed, to gain them access to clubs that otherwise wouldn’t admit them – and then only because it’s too late to hire anyone else once they’ve arrived.

Even after joining this good-natured musical entourage, Bud becomes separated for a while from the group and has more adventures on the road. All the while, Bud maintains his upbeat attitude, fervently remembering his late mother’s words: “When one door closes, another one opens.” Will the future be kind, cruel or indifferent to Bud? Highlights: Metro Theater Company joins forces with Jazz St. Louis for a delightful rendition of this one-act play with words by Kirsten Greenidge and an original musical score by jazz legend Terence Blanchard. It’s a sure-fire treat for theater patrons young and old, as well as devotees of America’s original musical art form.

Myke Andrews anchors the production with a winning portrayal of the amiable Bud. Andrews captures the joy and buoyant optimism of youth with an omnipresent smile and body language that shows the enthusiasm of a 10-year-old with persuasion. His interaction with the other performers is as ingratiating and infectious as Bud’s personality.

He’s supported by a strong ensemble that includes Don McClendon as the sophisticated Calloway, dressed to the nines in Lou Bird’s stylish costumes. FeliceSkye Hutchinson ably portrays the band’s chanteuse, Miss Thomas, as well as other female roles.

Reginald Pierre brings an easy grace and affable demeanor to the role of the dapper Jimmy, while Carl Overly Jr. scores as easy-going Lefty Lewis, as well as a courier who delivers blood to hospitals on his route.

Antony Terrell and Chris Ware also contribute in sundry roles, the former as a childhood chum of Bud’s and the latter as the devil-may-care band member Thug. Nicholas Kryah has a fine time as white pianist Dirty Deed, who doesn’t suffer the injustices inflicted on his mates by often hostile club owners.

Sean Savoie’s lighting marvelously contrasts the performing area for the Jazz St. Louis musicians in a bit of funky darkness opposite the brighter upstage.

t pleases Ready Readers to share two books starring (mostly) charming animals with lessons to learn and stories to tell. Ranging from ancient fable to modern literature and featuring vastly different illustrative styles and palettes, these titles offer words and pictures to delight and intrigue children and parents alike.

Exploring feelings should become a gleeful experience with the first of the two, Happy Hippo, Angry Duck: A Book of Moods by writer/illustrator Sandra Boynton.

This colorful rhyming board book invites readers to contemplate all the different ways they might feel. However, the book surpasses the familiar – happiness and anger – to explore a wider variety of emotions, including feeling grumpy, excited, worried, contented, amused and confused.

Beyond the benefit of building a child’s vocabulary, engaging with young children in reading and playfully acting out feelingrelated words will empower the children to express themselves more clearly to their sometimes-perplexed families. Because most toddlers’ tantrums arise from children’s inability to communicate their needs, that empowerment should ramify.

Likewise, Boynton’s comforting critters should make learning and pretending fun.

Children should be instantly drawn to her whimsical cartoon creatures, with their simple line shapes, expressive eyes and subtle hues. Her clever, wry text should also keep adults interested, even on the 10th reading of what may become a child’s daily read-aloud request.

A modern take on one of Aesop’s fables, The Lion and the Mouse by writer Jenny Broom and illustrator Nahta Nój constitutes this month’s second book.

It tells the tale of a small, timid, hungry mouse that meets a big, mighty lion.

Instead of eating the mouse, though, the lion helps her secure food. The mouse thereupon vows to repay the lion’s kindness, though the lion can’t imagine ever needing such a wee creature’s help. Unfortunately, the smug king of the beasts soon finds himself trapped in a hunter’s net, desperate for aid. At that point, the tiny rodent gnaws through the net, freeing the big cat – and also proving both that even small, timid creatures can hold mighty power and that friendships can grow between dissimilar yet caring characters.

Nój bestows a visually fascinating gift of a book, inviting readers to unwrap it page by page to uncover its treasures. From its bright panoply of colors, alternating thin and bold type, generous and ingenious use of page cutouts and flaps, and cryptic illustrative composition, this version of the fable should keep bibliophiles of all ages captivated through multiple readings.

tymologically, the terms synergy and energy rhyme only through happenstance, yet the new area art gallery Monaco promises, through the former, to generate a great deal of the latter.

The St. Louis space – which nestles in that municipality’s near South Side and takes its name from the Mediterranean microstate – opened with a collective exhibition titled “Grand Prix” (a multiply fiendish pun) involving the 14 members of what effectively constitutes the artistic co-op that founded it: Amanda Bowles, Bruce Burton, Sage Dawson, Kristin Fleischmann Brewer, José Guadalupe Garza, Meghan Grubb, “LAB:D” (Lyndon Barrois and Addoley Dzegede), Allison Lacher, Gregg Louis, Cole Lu, Tim Portlock and

“For me, I initially became interested in the language of water about a year ago and how we use water metaphors to describe political/cultural change or transformation – [like] ‘in the wake’ of an event, ‘tide shift’ on a particular issue or ‘undercurrents’ of a particular cultural moment. I began to experiment with works that incorporate attributes of waves, currents and tides. My aim with these particular pieces is to offer the viewer a spatial experience of tedious, slow-moving, slow-building change – a process that’s generally invisible or on a time scale that’s too long to experience in a moment.”

Once “As Blue Is to Distance” concludes, Monaco’s 201819 schedule of exhibitions runs through June 14, 2019 (see sidebar). The 18-month exhibition cycle, Grubb says, “allows each of the founding members to have one monthlong show during each cycle. The members can do just about anything with their time slot – they might have a solo show or invite a group of artists into the space.

They could plan multiple events, pop-ups or performances throughout their monthlong time slot. It’s really carte blanche, which is exciting.

“This schedule also leaves Monaco a bit of flextime each year that we may use in any number of ways – perhaps to host another artist-run collective show in our space or invite artists or community members to contribute to events and programming.

“As for the future, after the first exhibition cycle is complete, we envision beginning another 18-month exhibition cycle. Between now and then, we’ll periodically discuss the framework, logistics, co-op numbers, other goals, and then tweak or re-envision the exhibition timeline, as needed.”

Otherwise, Grubb reflects on the local reaction to Monaco.

“There has been a tremendous amount of positive energy and significant funds donated from the community that were critical to our build-out and completion of the gallery space last fall,” she says. “Opening night on Dec. 1 was packed, shoulder to shoulder, throughout the evening.

“We have heard and we feel that building an artist-run cooperative space like Monaco strengthens the entire arts community in St. Louis and, hopefully, will help as a model for more artist-centered spaces to develop and thrive in the years to come.

“We’re all thrilled and grateful for how the St. Louis community has responded to the opening of Monaco.”
