EDITOR’S NOTE

THIS WEEK’S HAPPILY EVER AFTER COLUMN INTRODUCES YOU TO A rescued English bulldog named Melvin, whose ‘mom’ says he exudes a certain kind of gratitude and commitment, and she wonders whether this is something innate in all rescue dogs. Nine years ago, we were unsure of how a 4-month-old border collie mix would fit into our family. We didn’t know much about Rowan’s background, except that the good folks at Stray Rescue found him abandoned in East St. Louis, and that he did well in foster care. To say the least, I was very apprehensive about his disposition. So, I did my homework: I read books, I had him checked out by—not one, but two—vets, and even had a session with an animal reiki expert. But to see is to believe, and Rowan has been perfect! As the examining vet told us then: There is not a bad bone in his body. Even the reiki practitioner declared: He is just happy to be with you, and his biggest fear is that his happiness could be taken away from him. Of course, since then, we’ve reassured Rowan that he has nothing fear. I’m sure Melvin gets that sense from his family, too. His story begins on p. 36.

‌W hat do you like most about your neighborhood?

Our Valentine’s Day Romantic Candlelight Dinner for Two

Diane Anderson I live in Huntleigh, a small residential community of just over 100 families in the heart of St. Louis County. I love my neighborhood because it is zoned to a 3-acre minimum per home, which means it feels like I am living in the country when I am only 20 minutes away from most everything!

Brie with Brown Sugar Glaze topped with dried cranberries and toasted pecans served with sliced french baguette

Frank Cusumano I live in Creve Coeur. Just the other day, both of our dogs, German shepherds, went outside without their electrical fence collars. A couple saw them on the street, and they grabbed them and brought them to the house—that is what I call a neighborhood.

Field Green Salad with feta cheese, blueberries, chopped granny smith apples and spicy walnuts, served with poppyseed dressing Tournedos of Beef Tenderloin with brown shallot butter

Dr. Doug Pernikoff I live in a special world called Glencoe, surrounded by thousands of acres of protected woodlands. The only sounds are of subtle wind-chime melodies flowing in concert with gentle forest breezes; the only visuals are of seasonal costumes of flower and leaf; the only smells are of spring and summer dew-laden flowers; and the cool, cleansing freshness of fall and winter. I live close to heaven on earth!!

ENCLAVE BELLERIVE

Luxury Lots

T

HE DISPLAYS HAVEN’T EVEN MADE their debut, yet homebuyers already have invested more than $18 million combined to move into a new residential area in St. Louis County. Luxury community Enclave Bellerive features elegant homes by three area builders—Simon Homes, McKelvey Homes and Fisher & Frichtel—and sits next door to Bellerive Country Club, surrounded by walking paths and lush greenery. The model homes will be presented soon. “I think [those early sales] mean that there’s an incredibly high demand for quality custom-built homes in an outstanding location, with quick access to all the major thoroughfares in the area,” says Jessie Chall, Fischer & Frichtel sales and marketing manager. Thirteen homes already have sold, and 22 lots are still available to new buyers. Each house is custombuilt in this gated community, which also features a gazebo and a fountain-filled pond. “There’s a wide variety of floor plans to choose from among all three builders,” Chall says, noting that there’s a

floor plan to fit all lifestyles. Simon Homes is the company behind Enclave Bellerive’s Villa properties. These single-family houses come in ranch and 1.5-story floor plans; homes start in the $700,000-range. All snow removal, landscaping and irrigation are taken care of by the Homeowner’s Association at these properties. Its display home, the ‘Arlington,’ features three bedrooms, all with their own bathrooms, a two-story great room, a columned dining room and a three-car garage, among other perks. The Estate properties come from McKelvey Homes, and are designed with elegance in mind; these properties are located on a cul-de-sac and many back-up to a park-like common space. The featured display—the ‘Bentley’—features four bedrooms, a study, a formal dining room, two separate garages, and more, all in its 1.5-story floor plan. Homes start in the $800,000-range. Properties by Fisher & Frichtel are referred to as the Manors, and start in the $900,000s. All properties sit on more than one-half acre. Its ‘Chesapeake’

display home houses four bedrooms in its 5,572 square feet of living space, as well as a butler’s pantry and open combination great room/kitchen/ breakfast room/hearth room. These luxury homes will be on display soon. “Simon Homes, McKelvey Homes, and Fisher & Frichtel will offer a sneak preview of each of their displays throughout the course of February, with our display grand opening occurring on March 7 and 8,” Chall explains. Sneak previews are available for Fisher & Frichtel on Feb. 14 and 15; McKelvey Homes on Feb. 21 and 22; and Simon Homes on Feb. 28 and March 1. “We’re very excited to be sharing with the community what we have to offer—and about having our customers out to see our homes.”

The Romantics

BY LISA WATSON

‌ he most romantic day of the year is T quickly approaching, and it makes us here at LN a little wistful. We asked some of our well-known neighbors about what Valentine’s Day means to them this year:

AMBASSADOR SAM FOX “February 14, 1953. At 7 p.m., we had just parked a few doors from Mavrakos Candy Store on the corner of Forsyth and Central. After discussing my intentions with Marilyn’s parents, most of my day was filled deciding which words to use and wondering what her response might be. Wow, was I nervous. “She said yes! “Five wonderful children, plus 15 beautiful grandchildren later – still the best contract I’ve ever made.”

JASMINE HUDA Reporter and anchor, KMOV “When we first started dating, I presented him a homemade Valentine’s Day card featuring one of our favorite sugary snacks, Poppycock Gourmet Popcorn. I super-glued the Poppycock pieces in the shape of a heart onto styrofoam board. A couple pecans have come undone, and I have since moved on to Skinny Pop (fewer calories), but I like to think the ‘sweet’ effort worked, as we are now planning for our wedding.”

RYAN MCADAMS Conductor of The Barber of Seville, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis “If novelty is what keeps romance alive, I think we’ve got everyone beat this year. My partner and I will have come back from Thailand at 6 a.m. that morning, we’ll spend the day lounging in a Korean spa in New Jersey, hit up a wedding of some close friends in Brooklyn—and then she goes off the next day to perform her one-woman show on an Alaskan island, and I conduct a live performance of a score to a Spanish silent film in Manhattan! We are the very model of a modern performing-artist couple, and we find every word of this plan romantic.”

HAIS, HAIS & GOLDBERGER

It Takes Teamwork

BY BRITTANY NAY

ROM AN INJURED CHILD TO A parenting plan conflict, family law issues are 24/7. That’s why Hais, Hais & Goldberger always is available to take the call. To better serve its growing number of clients whenever they need it, the family law firm has expanded its team with two new attorneys, who each have more than 10 years of experience in the field. Its ‘starting lineup’ now includes seven lawyers, with another to join later this year, as well as seasoned paralegals and a receptionist well-versed in managing family lawrelated calls. “The nice thing is that these lawyers are very skilled from having been out practicing in many jurisdictions, and they can hit the ground running,” says partner Susan Hais. “It takes years of experience to have different issues come up, and then you can see all the problems in future cases because you have so much experience—that’s really the difference.” Sam Hais, Susan’s husband and a partner at the firm, compares expanding their practice to adding players to a sports team, noting that the new staff members’ family-friendly personalities and legal

expertise “add depth to their bench.” Each attorney has versatile experience, including extensive trial hours, as well as the ability to settle cases out of court, he notes. The new teammates also allow the full-service firm to be there for clients not only during regular business hours, but evenings, weekends or holidays—whenever an issue arises. “Because of the Internet, people want faster service,” Susan explains. “A lot of people want to email or call for really quick answers because they are used to getting an immediate response. With our new staff members, no one has to wait.” Recently, a client desired a swift agreement, but Susan was in trial for the week. “I was able to give it to one of our new experienced lawyers, and we were able to service the client very quickly,” she explains. “You really can’t do that unless you have the staff to do it, and you can’t do it if you have a young staff that does not have the experience.” Family law always has been the solitary focus of the firm, Sam notes. “While some other firms practice family law, in addition to all other areas of law, we confine it to one area so we can do the very best that we can possibly do.” It takes a special

Our new lawyers are compassionate and they listen—they remember that it’s not just a business.” The New Year looks bright for the firm, Sam says. “We have put together a great team, and now we’re really looking forward to a new season of servicing really terrific clients from all walks of life. LEGAL CONCENTRATIONS

Adapting to Protect Your Rights

‌W

H E T H ER Y O U ’ RE launching a business or starting a family, the list of reasons to seek legal assistance is varied, and specializations can help provide ex p e r t i s e o n l e s s common or newer concerns. Three local attorneys discuss areas of legal concentration that are currently growing. Up first is business—new business, specifically. “The St. Louis area has really seen growth in the last several years in the entrepreneurial community,” says Brian Nolan of Carmody MacDonald. “I think it’s a field in business that is going to grow tremendously over the next decade.” And with new business comes a legal concentration focused on start-ups’ needs. “Our emerging business group focuses on the entrepreneurial community in St. Louis and start-up companies, from people who are [just] out of college to people who have experience in the industry and are looking to branch out and start their own business,” Nolan explains. He says the group formed last year based on the foundation of some of the firm’s other practice groups, such as business law and corporate practice. “Emerging businesses/emerging growth companies have unique needs that maybe more established companies don’t often need. Typically, the owners are very focused on their product or service, and we can provide our experience to help them with those various growing pains a company may have.” Outside of business law and into the family unit, assisted reproductive technologies or thirdparty assisted reproduction presents another area for legal concentration. This includes cases involving egg donation, surrogacy, embryo and sperm donation. “I help them navigate the legal process so that in each case, the person or couple who are the intended parents of the child become the legal parents of the child,” says Tim Schlesinger of Paule, Camazine & Blumenthal. Schlesinger says this field of law is growing not just because of the expanding technologies related to third-party assisted reproduction, but also “because a lot of the people who use assisted reproductive technology are same-sex couples, and with the normalization of rights for same-sex couples, they seem to feel more at-ease building their families through assisted reproduction.” Those utilizing third-party assisted reproduction need legal assistance to avoid disputes about whom the child belongs to, as well as any financial support or payments, Schlesinger explains. “At the end of the day, this is all about having children, and the people going through this process—both the intended parents and the gestational carriers or embryo donors—all need

legal representation to ensure their rights are protected.” From the board room to the delivery room, legal concentrations protect across the field, including

the roadway. “We’re seeing more and more tractor trailers on the roadways these days, and as the highways get more crowded…you find that there are more collisions,” explains Mark Bronson of Newman Bronson & Wallis, who frequently focuses his work on trucking accidents. “Often times, it’s because of the truckers not following the rules with regard to requirements for rest and sleep, so you have a lot of drowsy drivers—and also drivers [who] lack experience and training.” Bronson also notes pharmaceutical and medical device litigation as a growing field he’s often involved with. “The drugs are hitting the market before they’ve been adequately tested like they used to be by the FDA,” he says, explaining that products are not pulled until after so many adverse reactions have been reported. “Basically, we, the consumers, are becoming the guinea pigs…Unfortunately, by [the time the products are pulled] many people have been harmed.”

JACK SPOONER Spooner Law “It is difficult to come up with a single ‘best professional lesson’ not learned in law school. One important lesson I learned through experience is to keep emotions out of legal work, as it clouds judgment and creates unnecessary stress and expense on the client, as well as unnecessary work. A central theme to this lesson is how I receive a settlement offer. I have learned that any settlement offer, no matter how absurd, should be regarded a step toward resolution when it is in the client’s best interest to settle. All settlement offers are starting points; and through patience and diplomacy, I have been very successful moving settlements that start as ridiculous to a winner for my client.” Continued on page 28

TRIAL LAWYERS

‌ OM HAYDE T Spencer Fane Britt & Browne “Law school did not teach me the importance of credibility — both for lawyers, and our clients. I am a trial lawyer. In my practice, I have learned that many people will lie under oath. I also have learned that the first side caught lying will lose their case, along with their credibility. I counsel my clients to always tell the truth. None of us is perfect. Be honest, and let me argue your case. “I have also learned that a lawyer’s most valuable asset is his reputation. If my colleagues in the bar cannot trust my word, ultimately, my ability to help clients resolve disputes will suffer with my credibility. “I have learned this, and so much more that is not taught in law school, because I have had the fortune to have been mentored by some of the finest attorneys in the Midwest here at Spencer Fane.”

“(FAMILY law) requires understanding and compassion for every CLIENT... at the most difficult time in their lives. People going through divorce or a custody dispute must have an advocate and counselor who will guide them in the right direction and get the best results.”

Erin Zielinski Hais, Hais & Goldberger “In law school, I worked as a law clerk in a family law firm. From that moment, I knew family law would require more from me than statutes and case law. It requires understanding and compassion for every client we represent at the most difficult time in their lives. People going through divorce or a custody dispute must have an advocate and counselor who will guide them in the right direction and get the best results. Fifteen years later, this lesson is more relevant than ever, especially at Hais, Hais & Goldberger. It is a lesson Susan and Sam built their practice on and continue to demonstrate every day: Do what is best for the client and get the client to a better place...be there for your clients every step of the way. I can’t say I ever read that in any book in law school.”

EATING ON THE GO

Choose Wisely

I

BY CONNIE MITCHELL

T’S A BUSY DAY, SO YOU QUICKLY POP INTO your local coffee shop or convenience store to grab a snack between errands or meetings. But don’t let being in a hurry torpedo your attempts to eat a healthy diet. It is possible to eat healthy—even on the go—if you know what to look for and what to avoid. One idea is to check your local grocery store for a quick snack, says Jamie Cassell, a registered dietitian with Nutriformance Fitness, Therapy and Performance Facilities and Athletic Republic. “Opt for a build-your-own salad bar that allows you to select a variety of veggies, a lean protein and a healthy carbohydrate source, such as beans or lentils,” she says. “Add a piece of fruit to that for a complete and healthy lunch option on the run. You can also look for the veggie steamer bags in the produce aisle that can make a more complete meal out of leftovers from the night before.” In fact, that kind of advance planning can make all the difference. “Always keep healthy snacks on

hand to give yourself a better chance at making good choices,” says Marcey Cox, chief operations officer of Fit Flavors, a purveyor of all-natural, pre-cooked and packaged meals that are portioncontrolled and ready to heat and eat. For example, a small handful of nuts or a baggie of fruits and veggies, cut up and ready to eat, can be kept handy to grab on the way out the door. While this is the ideal choice, there are bound to be times when you won’t have a healthy snack with you. “If you must choose to eat and snack outside of the home, our first tip is to think twice before buying: Are you hungry or thirsty?” asks Paula Alvira, owner/operator at P3 Nutrition, a vending company that focuses on filling its machines with healthy snacks. “Many times, thirst comes disguised as hunger,” she says. “So buy a water (flavored or sparkling), or a non-caffeinated beverage, and drink it before you decide to snack. The vending machine is always there, so you can come back if you decide you’re still hungry.”

Should you decide that a snack is definitely in order, Alvira suggests thinking about your specific needs and making a choice before you’re starving. “Are you missing a meal and need protein? Do you have a sweet craving? Or do you just have ‘the munchies?’ I’m not a big believer in deprivation, so if I have a craving, I figure out what it is Continued on page 73

ating out can be tough when you’re seeking healthier fare. To help diners make good choices, the St. Louis Fitness Alliance, an association of health club owners, managers and other industry leaders, issued its list of top 10 healthiest restaurants in St. Louis. Ladue News spoke with Fitness Alliance director Travis Moore about the list, which was compiled with some funding from Rain Crow Ranch. Did you find any surprises when reviewing results of your list? I thought it would be a lot more difficult to locate healthy restaurants, and I was pleasantly surprised that we had so many here in St. Louis. Also, one of the restaurants, Winslow’s Home, was so yummy that I figured there was no way it was a ‘healthy’ restaurant. But sure enough, through the urging of our dietitian, we researched the restaurant, and behold, it made the list!

What’s the good news/bad news you can draw from this process and the resulting list? Good news: We have plenty of options for quality—tasty and still healthy—fuel for our bodies. Bad news: There are still so many restaurants that seem to just care about two things—offering cheap options and not caring about the long-term effects the ‘food’ has on our minds and bodies. When will you be updating the list? We plan to update it every year. This list is our 2015 list. What do you recommend readers look for when choosing a restaurant? Great question! Three things are important to us: First, that restaurants are using organic food as much as possible. ‘First, do no harm.’ Those chemicals and toxins are lethal. Second, the fewer additives and preservatives, the better. Less is more when it comes to the amount and complexity of

Scars may develop after any type of injury to the skin. Every wound heals with some scarring and there are many factors that contribute to the formation of scars. The mechanism of injury and its location can impact the severity of scarring.

What is the most important thing our readers should know about this topic? Don’t just buy the cheapest food. Save (or generate) budget dollars in other areas of life—live in a smaller house, wear non-name brand clothes, carpool, get a second job—just don’t put modified and processed ‘food’ in your body. Garbage in, garbage out. Most people take much better care of their car than they do their own bodies by putting real fuel in it versus the cheap-est thing they can get their hands on, performing preventive maintenance, etc.

Traumatic wounds usually have more scarring because the injury is haphazard and tends to be dirty. Surgical wounds usually heal with minimal scarring because the injury is controlled, deliberate and performed in a sterile fashion. Genetics also play a role in scar formation. Individuals with fair skin tend to scar less, while individuals with darker complexions tend to scar more. Sun exposure is associated with pigmentary (color) changes in scars. Ultraviolet radiation affects the skin at the wound differently than the surrounding skin. This differential effect can lead to both short-term and longterm implications for wound healing—with alterations in a scar’s color, size and consistency. Scars in aesthetically sensitive areas, such as the face, neck and eyes may become more noticeable following sun exposure. And

although the tissues may appear to be recovered a few weeks after injury, the impact of sun exposure on healing tissues may continue up to a year. Interventions for scar improvement can range from moisturizer to surgery. Silicone-based scar gels may improve the early scar appearance. Steroid injections can help flatten and soften raised or red scars. Sun avoidance is an important part of improving the appearance of scars. Mature scars can be improved upon with dermabrasion, laser resurfacing or scar revision surgery—usually minor procedures with minimal downtime. Facial scars can have a significant impact on quality-oflife and should not be dismissed. For younger patients who are still developing physically and emotionally, a facial scar can be a life-altering event. A consultation with a facial plastic surgeon is the first step towards restoring your happier, healthier self.

NCE UPON A TIME...Cathy and Nelson Howe were looking to add a furry new member to their family. They already knew they wanted a bulldog, having had one in the past. “She was the love of my husband’s life,” Cathy jokes about their first bulldog. “He would come home and kiss the dog, and pat me on the head.” So they called Saint Louis English Bulldog Rescue. Their new pet needed to be approved by their current dog, Daisy, a 12-year-old Australian shepherd mix. Fortunately, the rescue’s founder, Diana Engeszer, had just the one. “Melvin came into the rescue because the family was building a new house, and he was daddy’s dog, and momma didn’t want him to come to the new house,” Engeszer says. It’s a story they hear a lot, she notes. “I’ve never known a bulldog that thought it was a dog; they really consider themselves people. You love them to death, but they’re not the breed for everybody.” Engeszer brought Melvin to the Howes’ home, and stayed for several hours while they made sure it was a good fit, Howe recalls.

LN PETS “She wasn’t going to leave the house until she knew we were the ones, and she watched how Daisy reacted. Melvin was laid-back and a little tentative and insecure, but he’s the sweetest little guy. He was well-mannered and house broken—everything you want in a dog.” Howe appreciated that the rescue organization was determined to find a great fit for both their family and the dog, and that Engeszer was up-front about medical issues that are common in the breed. “They ask you if you’re willing to take a dog that needs A, B and C,” Howe says. “You really know what you’re getting into from the very beginning. When you do rescuing, you’re so well-briefed on the breed and what to expect that it’s a smooth sail.” She adds that Engeszer continues to stay in touch, and was especially available at first when Howe had a lot of questions. “They’re not hovering, but they definitely check in,” she says. “I think she would want to know if things weren’t going well. They’re quick to offer information, and they’ll give you a reference on a vet if you need it. They give great direction.” It might partly be the result of knowing Melvin’s history, but Howe says she could tell that Melvin was depressed when he first came to them. “He had a loss; but now he has a huge gain—everybody loves Melvin,” she says. “I don’t know if rescued dogs really know that they’ve been taken in, but there’s an attitude in these dogs— they’re so committed to you.” Now that Melvin has been with his new family for almost a year, Howe says she’s seen a huge transformation in the little dog who used to run and hide when the doorbell rang. “It’s easy to see the confidence grow,” she says. “You watch this little scared guy find his voice. He’s gained self-confidence to snuggle, to give of himself to us—he’ll lie on his back spread-eagle to be petted. He trusts you, and it’s so rewarding.” She adds the whole experience has been great for everyone. “We have loved growing with Melvin and having Melvin grow with us, and making him part of our family. He puts a smile on our face every day.” FOR YOUR OWN FAIRY-TAIL ENDING... Saint Louis English Bulldog Rescue P.O. PET TALK

NATIONAL PET DENTAL MONTH

Clean Those Chompers

F

EBRUARY MARKS NATIONAL PET Dental Month, a great time to discuss dental disease in our pets, both dogs and cats. Unfortunately, pet-owner compliance for pet dental care is estimated to be at 33 percent or less. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) presents data confirming the presence of periodontal disease in dogs (80 percent) and cats (70 percent), by 3 years of age. This condition is the most prevalent disease syndrome we see in most pets. Periodontal disease is the end-stage condition of a common sequential process of dental and gum (gingival) disease that starts with bacterial plaques sticking to the tooth surface and along the gum border. Inflammation follows; and over time, as the dead bacteria/plaque mix with the saliva, minerals cause a concretion to form, called calculus. As the process works its way under the gum line, and sometimes, deep along the root wall, the inflammation and infection can loosen the ligamentous structures that secure the tooth in its socket. The result can be loose teeth, infected roots, infected and highly inflamed gums, and more. Just as with humans, dental infections can enter the blood stream and colonize areas in the heart, lungs, kidneys, and most anywhere else in the body, causing serious illness or even death. So, with our beloved pets, management and dental husbandry are the keys to keeping them free of dental disease and associated maladies. The signs of dental disease can be very subtle, or very obvious. The best suggestion is to be diligent about veterinary visits. Most pets should visit their veterinarian at least twice each year. Your vet will perform a thorough examination, and should very quickly provide an assessment of your pet’s dental condition. An annual dental cleansing often is very sensible and appropriate. I have found that small, lap-type dogs accumulate calculi much worse and more frequently than larger breeds. The subtle signs might be early plaque and calculus accumulation on the very back molars, and often on the larger canine teeth up front. Your vet likely will grade the condition and tell you if a formal cleansing is best. With more advanced disease, we find varying degrees of redness to the gum line, or pus along the gingival margin. Teeth may be fused together with calculus, and often, you can note very loose dentition. I sometimes hear my clients respond to my findings with comments like, Oh, he always has bad breath! I always wonder why they don’t

BY DR. DOUG PERNIKOFF

WITH OUR BELOVED PETS, MANAGEMENT AND DENTAL HUSBANDRY ARE THE KEYS TO KEEPING THEM FREE OF DENTAL DISEASE AND ASSOCIATED MALADIES. take a peek to find the obvious reasons for that smell? Oh, well! I am just happy that they are here visiting. In both dogs and cats, signs other than odor might include drooling, receding gums, red gums that bleed very easily with minimal contact, weight loss with a history of not feeding as is normal, or general irritability, a result of the pain and discomfort that comes with sore gums and infections. Dental cleansings require a general anesthesia, meaning your pet will be under for the procedure. Your veterinarian will perform a blood

exam, along with a general physical to ensure a safe exercise for your family pet. The teeth are either manually scaled with dental instruments, or are cleansed with an ultrasonic unit, followed by a formal polishing and finally, the application of a fluoride kind of covering. This latter step is something that pet owners need to follow up with on an every two weeks. Cleansings at home should be twice each week, minimally. There are many pet toothpaste products and applicators available. I like the structure that fits right over your index finger, and you can rub the tooth and surface gently with the paste, using the bristled face of the structure. Don’t be surprised to find that your veterinarian sends you home with antibiotics and maybe even anti-inflammatory medicines, depending on the degree of disease present. Finally, you might ask your veterinarian about discounts for National Dental Month in February. Help your pets’ well-being by instituting a reasonable dental management program soon. Good luck!

‌ rs. Leesa Galatz and David Finlay, an orthopedic D surgeon and vascular surgeon, respectively, moved to Clayton about 10 years ago with their son, Ryan, who is now 11. But it wasn’t a long move, as they were just moving from a townhome across the border of University City. They loved the convenience of this highly walkable and energetic neighborhood. We spoke with Leesa: What’s Clayton’s best-kept secret? We love this little restaurant called Mad Tomato. It’s on Meramec Avenue, a little off the beaten path. It’s a neighborhood restaurant with a great bar and wonderful Italian food. It’s one of our family favorites, with wood-fired pizza and creative dishes, and we go there so often, they know us when we come in now! What’s the best way to spend a Sunday in Clayton? We would stop by Straubs and pick up some sandwiches, then take them over to Shaw Park for a picnic—we love to do that in the summer. Then we would go enjoy the pool. On the way home, we would stop by Northwest Coffee for an iced coffee.

Neighborhood Notes: Steve Breihan, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices The Clayton School District is great, and it has wonderful facilities. The Center of Clayton, the parks and the location also make it a great place to raise a family. The housing is strong and there are lots of different options. Clayton also has a little bit of an urban feel, which buyers love.

‌ hen the Hoefer family moved to the St. Louis area W from Virginia, they fell in love with the older homes and bigger lots of Frontenac, as well as the great school district and central location. Bill, the COO of Saint Louis University Hospital, and Melissa, a pharmacist at Mercy St. Louis, have three kids: Abbie, 13; Reiley, 10; and William, 8. We asked Melissa what makes Frontenac stand out: Where’s the best Frontenac spot to meet friends? Not that we ever get to go out—since we both work and have kids, we’re always busy! But we like the restaurants at Plaza Frontenac, especially Brio Tuscan Grille and BrickTop’s. We also go to nearby Des Peres Park, and we spend a lot of time at the little shops in Ladue. What’s the best way to spend a Sunday in Frontenac? We usually go to church at Salem United Methodist Church on Lindbergh Boulevard, and we’ve enjoyed meeting a lot of people there. Then we’re usually out playing soccer at Soccer Park, or else we enjoy going out to brunch. We like to bike and walk in our neighborhood a lot, and spend lots of time with our neighbors.

Neighborhood Notes: John Ryan, Coldwell Banker Gundaker

of St. Louis, Inc.® Quality Since 1871

Frontenac is a great community in a prime area of the central corridor. It’s part of the Ladue School District, with a small portion in the Kirkwood School District, both of which are highly desirable. It’s home to Plaza Frontenac, private schools, and the houses themselves are really appealing. There’s a wide range of home prices, and the majority of the homes are on 1-acre lots with easy access to Interstate 64.

‌ HE GLANTON FAMILY MOVED TO TOWN & COUNTRY IN 2013. T Both Luvell Glanton Jr. and his wife, Sophia, are physicians. Sophia explains the family moved to Town & Country because they loved the quiet neighborhoods and friendly atmosphere.

Where do you like to spend time as a family in Town & Country? Walking in Queeny Park, or having dinner at Cooper’s Hawk. We also love The Melting Pot, and Myseum is a great place to take the kids on a rainy day!

‌ hile searching for a home, Caroline Springer and W Chris Nitzsche were looking for green space—and then some. Caroline says the family wanted “easy access to the things that are important to our family: parks, trails, wildlife, and other outdoor, human-powered recreational opportunities, as well as great schools.” They found the perfect oasis in Wildwood. Chris, executive VP of sales and marketing at Quagga Accessories, and Caroline, a Jamberry independent consultant, have two sons, Will and Kirk, and a border collie mix named Bert. Will, age 5, attends Babler Elementary, and Kirk, age 3, attends Woodlawn Chapel’s Mother’s Day Out program. We spoke to Caroline:

Where’s the best Wildwood spot to meet friends? We love B&B Theatres, Big Chief Roadhouse, the Wildwood Pub & Grill, and Llywelyn’s Pub. Table 3 is a nice choice for a girls’ night out or date night.

Creve Coeur

The Pesces

BY JULIA CHRISTENSEN

We’re not a resolution. We are the solution!

GET

THE EDGE! ‌THE PESCE FAMILY MOVED TO CREVE COEUR IN 2004. CARL Pesce, an attorney at Thompson Coburn, and his wife Melissa, a retired attorney, have three daughters: 12-year-old Lauren, a sixth grader at Ladue Middle School; 9-year-old Emily, a fourth-grade student at Spoede Elementary School; and 6-year-old Sophia, a Spoede kindergartener. The family also has three fur babies, including two rescue cats, Pumpkin and Spice, and 5-month-old Coton de Tulear puppy Oliver. “Having a new puppy in the house is like having a new baby all over again,” Melissa says.

Total Body Transformation

Why did you move to Creve Coeur? We had a beautiful home in the heart of Clayton that we loved. However, after Lauren was born, we realized that we needed more space to grow. So, we decided to build a home to suit our needs. We decided very early on that we wanted to build in the Ladue School District; we were also looking for a quiet, centrally located neighborhood, preferably in a cul-de-sac, with lots of green space. Creve Coeur really fit all of our needs and wants. We have been so happy since we moved here!

PESCE FAMILY PHOTO BY SARAH CONARD, PARK PHOTO BY BRYAN SCHRAIER‌

What’s the best way to spend a Sunday in Creve Coeur? Sundays at our house usually start with church at Our Lady of the Pillar. Then, we almost always end up with take-out from Potbelly Sandwich Shop. After lunch, we usually try to spend time as a family by going to a park or doing some other activity together. Beirne Park is always a favorite choice on nice days.

Neighborhood Notes: NANCY GULICK, JANET MCAFEE REAL ESTATE Creve Coeur is a very good family area. It’s large; it covers some of Ladue schools and some of Parkway schools, and it has several private schools. It houses the headquarters to several worldwide corporations. There are quite a few parks, so it’s got a lot of green space. The homes really range in price—there’s everything from ranch houses to gated communities, traditional-style single family homes to condominiums—there’s something for everyone.”

We’re part of your community. Being located in your community and being an active member of it are two very different things. As your neighborhood funeral home we’re honored to serve you both through funeral care and community involvement. Call us to learn how we can serve you further.

‌LOOKING FOR A COMFORTABLY SIZED HOME IN A CONVEnient location for herself and her sons, Susan Bowen was pleased to find the perfect spot in a growing neighborhood of Ballwin. This VP of business development at NewGround says she and her sons— Stephen, 14, and Max, 12—along with their dog, Fonzie, and fish, Sushi, got ‘warm fuzzies’ when they entered this welcoming neighborhood, and they haven’t looked back. Where’s the best Ballwin spot to meet friends? We are right down the street from Circle 7 Ranch, which is a great sports bar; and now, Cooper’s Hawk Winery and Restaurant is open. We’re at 141 and Clayton Road, and we love that there are nice sidewalks to get to Target and Whole Foods and all those shops. My boys bring their friends to The Pointe, and we are always walking at all the nearby parks. What’s Ballwin’s best-kept secret? I’ve lived in a couple places, but all the residential amenities, from the trash and leaf pickup, to the recycling and the Ballwin newsletter, are really fabulous. It sounds boring, but it’s really a big deal. Ballwin also was named one of America’s Best Places to Live by Money magazine.

Dana Sutter, co-owner of Streamline Orthotics and Prosthetics, and her husband, Brent, a financial planner, have lived in Kirkwood almost their entire lives. In fact, they were high-school sweethearts at Kirkwood H.S. Soon, their kids, Sydney, 12, and Claire, 10, will be attending the same school. We asked Dana what makes their neighborhood special: Where’s the best Kirkwood spot to meet friends? We love Amigo’s, Dewey’s Pizza and The Custard Station. I used to work there in high school when it was called Jeremiah’s—and my kids still call it that, but their friends don’t know what they’re talking about! There’s a yoga place called Sweet Peace Yoga, which is a great yoga studio, and we love to take the kids to Tro Mo (i.e. Tropical Moose). Insiders know that Walk Away Waffles comes to Tro Mo on Saturday mornings at the Farmers Market. What’s the best way to spend a Sunday in Kirkwood? We would probably have lunch on the patio at Amigo’s, then walk over to Jeremiah’s for a custard dessert, then stop by Cornucopia to impulse-purchase some kitchen items. After that, we’d go to Fun in the Sun sports, then walk around the Farmers Market and buy something for dinner.

‌Years ago, Bettina and Stephen Strauss made a deal that their first home would be in Stephen’s hometown of Webster Groves, and that their second home would be in Bettina’s hometown of Clayton. But their Webster home felt so right, that in 2008, they did a rehab and decided to stay. Today, the couple, both partners at Bryan Cave, live there with son Sam, 12, daughter Josie, 11, and their labradoodle, Mulligan. We asked Bettina what made the city so appealing: What’s Webster’s best-kept secret? There’s a new Stations of the Cross garden at Annunciation parish, and we helped head up the fundraising for it. It has pretty landscaping, and it’s lit so you can walk it at night. It’s a great place for spiritual reflection and also to enjoy the outdoors. Where do you like to spend time as a family in Webster? We go to Weber’s Front Row a lot—it’s owned by our friend, Bob Weber—and we also like to go to Robust Wine Bar; and we take the kids to Yucandu Art Studio.

Neighborhood Notes: Joel Svoboda, Circa Properties The No. 1 reason people move to Webster is the proximity to Clayton and downtown. No. 2: people like Norman Rockwell paintings. Central West End

The Masons BY LISA WATSON

www.thesilver-lady.com

Why did you move to the Central West End? I have spent a lot of time in Paris, France, and I used to have an apartment there. I loved always walking everywhere. When my place became available, it struck me that I could have that urban lifestyle here in St. Louis. Where’s the best Central West End spot to meet friends? Forest Park is just incredibly generous in its offerings for bicycling, walking and playing with the dog, plus all the events that happen there. And you can’t forget The Muny: I actually walk to the shows. The movie theater at The Chase is right there, and I love Sub Zero Vodka Bar and Scape American Bistro, and this little Thai takeout place called Thai 202. Joey and I are also members of the Chess Club, and he’ll take friends there to play chess.

Neighborhood Notes: TOYIN ODUWOLE, COLDWELL BANKER PREMIER Living in the Central West End is city living at its best. Being able to live within walking or biking distance to Forest Park, the public library, The Chase Park Plaza and all of the restaurants along Euclid is remarkable. This eclectic community has much to offer anyone who wants to live in an area that is rich with history and culture.

DIVERSIONS

JINCY DUNNE

Jincy has spent most of her young career playing against boys. She plays full-time with the Chicago Fury. However, much of the last few years has been spent with the National Team. Last year, she was one of the last players cut for the Olympic team— she was 16, and that likely won’t happen again. Andy Strickland has coached hockey for 10 years and has covered the NHL for 16 years. “She has a chance to play in the next two, three, maybe even four Olympics. And she will be one of the best players on that team,” he says. “Fifteen or 20 years from now, we may be calling her the most decorated player ever from the area.” Dunne will play at Ohio State next season, where she’ll team up with her sister, Jessica. There are six kids in the Dunne family, and each one of them is an outstanding hockey player. Jincy is as humble as she is talented. She gives much of the credit to her success to Keith Tkachuk, who has opened doors for her, as well as to another former Blues player, Jamie Rivers, for his coaching. Women’s hockey has no real big-time professional league yet. So, college and the Olympics are the goals for Jincy. In 2018, you likely will turn on your television to KSDK, and Jincy Dunne will be front and center. We caught up with her at the rink:

KEEPING S HER EYE ON THE PRIZE BY FRANK CUSUMANO

T. LOUIS IS KNOWN AS A BASEBALL town. For years, St. Louis was a soccer hotbed, and we still produce many great players. But right now, the sport in which we’re producing the most elite, high-level talent is hockey. The sons of former Blues players have a lot to do with it. In the near future, you’ll be hearing much about the sons of Keith Tkachuk, Jeff Brown and Al MacInnis. However, the hockey player in our town who likely has the best chance to play in multiple Olympics is not a son of a famous ex-player. Her name is Jincy Dunne, a 5-foot, 6-inch tall 17-year-old from The Fulton School in St. Albans. Last month, Jincy, the captain of the U.S Women’s National Under-18 Team, scored the gold-medalwinning goal in overtime against Canada. Earlier in the game, this highly skilled young lady, who plays defense, went end-to-end on a rush that was almost Bobby Orr-like.

How has playing with boys helped your career? It’s had a huge role. It has taught me to play with my head up, play at a faster pace, play stronger, play smarter—and I think it’s because of playing with the boys. During the course of the week, how often are you doing something hockey-related? I have the mentality that everything I do is focused toward the goal. And one of my goals is the Olympics. So everything I do is focused on getting better each day. I am on the ice three or four days a week, and in the gym three or four days a week. Is it too far-fetched to say your goal is to be the greatest female hockey player? My goal is to be the best I can be, and if that makes me the greatest player, I will take it. If not, I just want to make sure I do the best I can every day.

FIVE THOUGHTS: 1. If any one of you think the movie Birdman was a better movie than American Sniper, Unbroken and The Imitation Game (like those Rotten Tomatoes Movie Reviews), I think you need to see a therapist. 2. The Blues organization rolled out the red carpet for a Marine about to go on a mission last month. They spent almost an hour with the young man before he left to serve our country. I think hockey players are the nicest professional athletes out there. 3. I just wonder what would happen if AEG builds a stadium in L.A. before Stan Kroenke. What if Kroenke actually has to come here and be a good owner and care about the fan base? I would welcome him back. I don’t want to lose the NFL and become Memphis on a Sunday afternoon in the fall. 4. As much as I want to see our local star athletes stay in the area for college, if a young man falls in love with the University of Kentucky, can you really blame him? Can you hold a grude against a kid who wants to play in front of 24,000 people every night? Hope they all stay, though. 5. The greatest three turnarounds in St. Louis history are the ’99 Rams, the 2011 Cardinals and my backyard (Thank you, M & P Landscaping).

Imagining Madoff

BY MARK BRETZ

STORY: What do Holocaust survivor and Nobel Prize winner Elie Wiesel, Steven Spielberg, baseball Hall-of-Famer Sandy Koufax, and actors Kevin Bacon and John Malkovich have in common with Yeshiva University, the Royal Bank of Canada, Bank Austria and the United Jewish Endowment Fund? Tragically, all were victims of financier and convicted felon Bernard Madoff’s infamous Ponzi scheme that bilked his investors out of a staggering $65 billion. Madoff was no mysterious, unknown financial forecaster. He helped launch the NASDAQ stock market, advised the Securities and Exchange Commission and for nearly half a century was a leading financier who counseled the rich and the powerful, corporations and not-for-profits on their investment strategies. When clients in 2008 requested an aggregate $7 billion back in returns, Madoff’s Ponzi scheme collapsed, along with his investors’ savings. A year later, Madoff was convicted of fraud, money laundering, perjury and theft. In his starkly lit prison cell, he recalls an all-night conversation he had before his monumental collapse with an erudite friend and investor named Solomon Galkin. The latter is as esoteric as Madoff is pragmatic, as sincere as Bernie is cynical. Why is this the conversation that Madoff revisits in his loneliness?

HIGHLIGHTS: Playwright, performance artist and professor Deb Margolin has written more than two dozen works since 1982, but doubtless none as intriguing as this overly long, one-act drama. Imagining Madoff currently is being given a moving and also mysterious interpretation by director Lee Anne Mathews and her expert trio of players at the New Jewish Theatre. What’s most fascinating about Imagining Madoff is that one really doesn’t know much more about the financier/felon at the end of the play than before. Madoff, in Bobby Miller’s multi-layered performance, even references his ability to fog a person’s mind by speaking in such a low mumble that his audience merely shrugs in unknowing approval. Madoff likes it that way.

It’s a fascinating character study, as the fallen financial king reveals in flat, unemotional style that he engineered his epic fraud “for the movement, like music, not for the money.” In Miller’s portrayal, Bernie is cold and indifferent to the economic ruin he has brought on dozens, perhaps hundreds of trusting clients. In sharp contrast is Jerry Vogel’s intricate rendering of the fictional Solomon Galkin, who, as his name would infer, is steeped in wisdom, finely tuning his own perceptions of humanity and the universe in banter with his friend, Bernie, not knowing that he is being bilked in the process.

An especially revealing plot device is the presence of an unnamed secretary who worked in Madoff’s office and now is being interrogated by an unseen government official. Julie Layton adopts a precise New York accent, but is even more convincing in a heart-rending performance as she unknowingly reveals remarkable traits of her boss, such as his desire to be a contestant on Wheel of Fortune or his tacky observation once that she had gained about 10 pounds. Problematic to the production are its sluggish pace, and an awkwardly staged set, which runs the length of the floor that separates half the audience from the other. It starts with a gray wall at one end with Madoff’s cell, across a central area focused on Galkin’s study and concludes at an interrogation room with the New York City skyline in the background. Unfortunately, this means that half the time, the audience sees Miller and Vogel from the back with annoying regularity and for no discernible purpose. There’s much to admire in the cleverly titled Imagining Madoff, but trimming 15 minutes from its 1 hour and 40 or so minutes could tighten and improve it.

Layla

A Fine Falafel (and More) BY SIDNEY LEWIS

THE STRIP OF MANCHESTER ROAD THAT RUNS through The Grove neighborhood from Kingshighway to Vandeventer has been undergoing a slow Renaissance the last few years. It currently boasts some fine nightlife destinations, as well as some quality dining options. One place that we feel has flown under the radar for a while now is Layla. The restaurant changed ownership a while back and chef/owner Jason Sparks reworked the menu with creative takes on Middle Eastern and American favorites, along with shakes galore. There are enough appetizer options on the Layla menu to satisfy any craving, from hummus to kabobs. There also are a couple of sampler platter options for those who want an overview of the selections. We opted for the Stuffed Falafel ($7), a handful of crispy falafel balls stuffed with creamy goat cheese and served with a thick and spicy date jam, which really accentuates that tangy cheese filling. There’s a selection of 10 hearty burgers to choose from, utilizing everything from beef to lamb to lentils as a base. Our choice was the Harvest Moon ($13). We figure the ‘moon’ in the name comes from the fried egg that tops this delicious burger. Other accoutrements include feta cheese, fried spinach, tomato and date jams, all between two brioche buns. This combo has it all—sweet, savory and just a bit of tang. Just be advised—you’ll need multiple napkins. All burgers are served with a choice of fries, tabouleh, batata, veggies, or hummus and pita—we went the traditional route and chose fries. Schwarma refers to a type of roasted meats, as well as the resulting wrap they can be served in. The menu offers three versions: traditional, spicy

and the one we went with, Greek ($8). This choice features romaine Mediterranean pico, feta cheese and tzatziki. We filled ours with chicken ($4); though beef, lamb and falafel also are available. Similar to a traditional Greek gyro, this version eschews pita for a thinner wrap, which puts more focus on the fillings. Sides offered are the same as the burger; and for this, we chose some fresh greens. For dessert, there’s a wide range of shakes, including boozy ones, but we decided on a sweet mashup of cultures: the Gooey Butter Baklava ($6). And yes, it’s as decadent as it sounds. In addition to the food, Layla has recently upped its cocktail game with a whole slew of new drinks, courtesy of bar manager Tony Saputo, formerly of Eclipse. We tried two variations on classic cocktails: the Sage In Sand ($10), a south-of-the-border take on the classic Blood & Sand cocktail with La Puritita mezcal, Cherry Heering (a venerable cherry brandy), Carpano Antica vermouth, honey syrup, OJ and some sage leaves; and a Manhattan variant called The Manhattan Kansas Revisited ($10), based on Bols Genever instead of whiskey, with locally made Big O ginger liqueur, Cocchi Rosa, Cocchi Vermouth di Torino, Zucca, and some egg white for froth. Both were well-balanced, boozy and delicious. There’s also a dedicated parking lot at Layla, always a plus. Whether you’re looking for a quick drink and a snack, or a full-on feast, put Layla on your list. 4317 Manchester Road, 553-9252, laylastl.com

and satisfy the craving instead of eating around it— that just leads to more snacking,” she says. However, certain types of snacks should sound alarm bells that tell you to just say no, Cox adds. She recommends avoiding anything with artificial sweeteners or labeled as sugar-free. “These make our bodies think we’re processing real calories; and over time, they can cause metabolic laziness,” she says. “Sweeten your coffee or tea with honey or stevia.” Refined and processed foods also are poor nutritional choices, she notes. In general, keep your food choices as simple and basic as possible, Cassell says. “The simpler the food and the shorter the ingredient list, the better off you tend to be,” she notes. “Foods that say ‘made fresh’ or ‘real food’ are not necessarily more healthy.” In fact, she adds, they may be loaded with fats and sugar. Alvira suggests swapping chips for crunchy veggies, or at least opting for an apple or vegetable chip instead of a typical potato chip. Chocolate cravings should be met with dark chocolate (more than 75 percent cocoa content), some of which can be found combined with dried fruits or nuts. Finally, she notes that beef jerky and trail mix can be healthy and filling protein sources, although it’s important to read the label, and be aware of sodium and sugar content. “Good eating choices are like good friends,” she says. “Hang with a nice crowd and chances are, good things will happen for you. The same goes for eating. Try to surround yourself with good food choices, and with friends or coworkers who make good eating choices.”
