EDITOR’S NOTE
ALL WEEK LONG, WE’VE BEEN HAVING SOME FUN WITH OUR 2015 MOST Dynamic People honorees. We’ve been posting ‘teasers’ on our social media feeds to build on the anticipation leading up to next week’s announcement of the 10 St. Louisans who’ve caught our attention in the past year. You’ll also find a couple of these ‘hints’ sprinkled throughout the pages of this current edition. Speaking of social media, I’m happy to report that our Facebook friends now number 6,800-plus, with our reach increasing on a weekly basis. And since joining the Twitter-verse five years ago, we’ve signed up almost 5,000 followers. Whether you keep tabs on us on Facebook or Twitter, or if you receive our eBlast newsletter by email, know that you are among the first of our readers to find out about our top features from week to week. Our more aural readers also can catch a preview with the Ladue News Minute, which can be heard twice a day (7:40 a.m. and 5:20 p.m.) on Monday, Wednesday and Friday on RAF-STL (107.3 FM or 96.3 HD2). And yes, one more week to go until the big reveal of the 2015 Most Dynamic St. Louisans...stay tuned!

Antonio and Kirven Douthit-Boyd
Two renowned dancers are coming to St. Louis to take the helm at one of the city’s top dance programs. ANTONIO DOUTHIT-BOYD and KIRVEN DOUTHIT-BOYD are retiring as principal dancers from the prestigious Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater to become co-artistic directors of dance at COCA (Center of Creative Arts). Both men are considered as two of the top dancers in the world: Antonio is a native St. Louisan and COCA alumnus who trained with the organization before embarking on his professional career that included stints with Dance Theatre of Harlem and Les Grands Ballet Canadiens de Montreal. His partner, Kirven, trained at the Boston Arts Academy, and danced with Battleworks and Parsons dance companies before joining Alvin Ailey. In their new roles, the Douthit-Boyds will manage all aspects of COCA’s pre-professional dance division, as well as teach various classes as part of the organization’s dance curriculum.

WORD AROUND TOWN
Pedestrians and cyclists at FOREST PARK soon will experience safer, more welcoming pathways, thanks to a $200,000 gift from the GERTRUDE AND WILLIAM A. BERNOUDY FOUNDATION. Along with other funding, the contribution will make the $2 million improvement project along the park’s border possible. Plans call for improving access to the park’s southwestern corner, where McCausland Avenue, Clayton Road, Oakland Avenue, Skinker Boulevard and I-64 meet, and along Oakland Avenue. Some of the project highlights include a milelong sidewalk along Oakland that connects to the Hampton Avenue sidewalk, and reducing Oakland to one lane in each direction with 1.9 miles of new ‘buffered’ bicycle lanes.

MICHAEL STAENBERG
I
MET MICHAEL STAENBERG ON THE SAME day that Stan Kroenke announced his plans to build a new football stadium in Los Angeles. Staenberg and Kroenke were business partners; they co-founded THF Realty and built it into one of the biggest property development companies in the country. Both men made a lot of money. Now, it seems likely that Kroenke will move a piece of his empire to the West Coast. And while this column will focus on Staenberg and his road to success, after Kroenke’s announcement, I just couldn’t ignore the glaring differences that the former business partners now seem to have. Staenberg was born in Omaha and moved to St. Louis 32 years ago. He donates millions to worthy causes, especially those with a connection to the Jewish Federation of St. Louis. He also plans to stay in his adopted hometown. “I would not live anywhere else...I’m living right here. I just love it,” he declares. “It’s easy to get around, people are nicer and we’ve got great baseball—what else do you want?” And then there’s Stan Kroenke, who married into the Walton family and made a fortune in real estate. He owns a handful of pro sports teams, including the Rams, but it appears to most St. Louisans that he’s about to kick us while we’re down. Staenberg doesn’t understand how his one-time
mentor could do it. “I know the NFL is all about money, but it comes to the point where how much is enough?” he asks. “Everybody can justify the way they want to live their life, but you have to be able to look at yourself in the mirror and ask, Did I do the right thing?” But I digress: The focus of this column is Michael Staenberg. Young Michael grew up in a small Nebraska home with four siblings. His dad died at 39, when he was just 13. His mom had to work full-time, and so did he. Staenberg says he bagged groceries, worked at a pharmacy and a local McDonalds. He also got a job in construction, and saved enough money working as a brick tender to pay his way through college at Arizona State, where he earned a business degree. He had a cousin who was a top real-estate executive at Leo Eisenberg & Company in Kansas City, and Staenberg says he bugged his cousin until he took a chance on him. “He said, It’s commission-based, no draw,” Staenberg recalls. “He put me in a room, threw me a set of plans and said, Good luck.” Five years later, Staenberg moved to the company’s office in St. Louis and became a senior VP. In 1991, he left Eisenberg to team up with Kroenke and start THF (which stood for ‘To Have Fun’) Realty. He says there’s no magic bullet to explain his success,

but he says he’s good at adapting, likes to meet new people, knows how to work a room, and follows up. He also says he was “legendary” for working 90 to 100 hours a week. “I’m not the smartest guy, believe me, but I’ll outwork anybody.” In his career, Staenberg has made many millions, but always remembers what his dad taught him about social responsibility and the Jewish tradition of tzedakah, giving to charity. “My dad’s parents were the ones who came through Ellis Island and were given things,” he says. “That’s a humbling experience; so when we went to synagogue, my dad said it didn’t matter if you only had some pennies, you had to give—it was a great lesson.” In the past 10 years, Staenberg’s family and foundation has given away $60 million to charity. His latest project, called the Anything Grants, runs through the Jewish Federation. The grants are aimed at spreading smaller amounts over a large number of organizations to try and help as many people as possible. “Nobody got here by themselves. You think Stan Kroenke got here by himself? He had Bud Walton to help him; Sam Walton helped me. It comes to a point when you have to help other people. It’s not all about yourself,” he says. “I’m working now so that I can give away more money— I’ve got enough.”

Mari de Villa
O
n March 9, 1960, Mari de Villa welcomed its first guest. But the night before the grand opening, a snowstorm blanketed the drive leading to the senior living community’s front door. In what has become a Mari de Villa tradition—putting guests first—founder Joe Linneman walked out to Clayton Road, and carried the inaugural guest through the snow and into his new home. As Mari de Villa celebrates its 55th anniversary this year, president Fred Wiesehan is proud to say the doctor of that first resident later became a guest himself—and his sister is still a guest. “What’s most rewarding is the high number of second- and thirdgeneration family members who have become guests after their parents or grandparents were guests here years ago,” Wiesehan notes. The campus has grown with its guests through the years, from 26 rooms in 1960 to 140 rooms today. Major milestones occurred in 1964, when the community doubled in size, and in 1980, when it doubled once again. In 1982, construction began
on the Villa Estates, 54 condominium-style units for independent living. And a recent five-year expansion project, which reached completion last year, included the remodeling of the Villa Estates Clubhouse, the construction of The Waterford Wing, a new physical therapy department, and the expansion of the Garden Room and the living rooms at Villa East and Villa West, as well as the establishment of The Terraces, the community’s memory care and Alzheimer’s area. Throughout the construction changes, Wiesehan notes Mari de Villa’s goal has remained the same: maintaining a welcoming, family-oriented facility for its guests. The current 22-acre campus offers all levels of senior care, from independent to assisted living, 24-hour skilled nursing and memory care. And on-site amenities abound, including an indoor/ outdoor pool for water aerobics classes, a club for private parties, dinners and a guest speakers series, and a beauty salon for pampering, all surrounded by a landscaped campus featuring large fountains and

lush gardens. And when guests desire an adventure off-campus, they can be whisked away by chauffeured transportation to the city’s best restaurants and entertainment. Throughout the year, Wiesehan says Mari de Villa will mark its 55th anniversary with special celebratory events to commemorate its past and build excitement for the future. As Wiesehan and his wife, Mary Kay (Mari de Villa’s VP), look back on the community’s rich history, they are proud of the past—and excited about the future. “We serve people who are aging, and we are getting better at that,” Wiesehan notes. “Mary Kay said it best: We keep getting better with age.”

Capturing Your Moment I
t was fate that led Lisa Dolan to become a wedding photographer. When she graduated college, several of her friends had gotten engaged and asked her to capture their big days. “I just fell in love with it, and the rest is history,” she recalls. Since 2009, Dolan has been photographing the memories of couples and families at some of St. Louis’ most stunning upscale venues and outdoor spaces. As a wedding and lifestyle photographer, she understands the importance of choosing a professional to capture life’s most precious moments. “Go for a photographer that you feel comfortable being around,” she advises. “Look through all of their work; and book them early, the earlier, the better—nine months to a year in advance.” When Dolan is booked to photograph a wedding or engagement, she gets to know the bride and groom through a series of consultations. “It’s great working with couples at this special time,” she notes. “I love to do an hour-long engagement photo session first, instead of jumping into photographing an eight-hour wedding. That
way, the couple becomes more comfortable with you.” Your clients typically aren’t models, Dolan explains, and it’s important to make them feel at ease in front of the camera. Once the big day arrives, Dolan strives to record the most beautiful, creative photos possible. “I try to stay away from poses that are popular at the moment,” she explains. “I want the couple to look back and still love their wedding photos.” In addition to taking timeless, posed shots, Dolan says it’s crucial to capture natural moments between the couple and their loved ones throughout the event. Dolan notes that a good mix of photos is best, but warns not to overdo it. “I always tell people to pick two different locations, a beautiful natural space—St. Louis has so many great parks—and a more urban area, such as a building with extraordinary architecture. Don’t try to go to six places— it will be exhausting. Take time to enjoy all those special moments.” No matter what type of photo shoot, the No. 1 goal always is to have fun, Dolan says. “If they are comfortable together and having fun, it will show in the photos.”

A Rose is A Rose...
R
oses have been a part of every important ceremony and celebration since the time of the ancient Greeks. Roses are, by far, the mostrequested choice for weddings, earning the title as the most romantic of flowers. The Greeks and Romans each identified their goddess of love, Aphrodite and Venus, respectively, with the rose. They used roses abundantly and thought nothing of strewing petals of roses a foot deep. There is a story of the emperor Nero, who loved roses and used them lavishly. At one of his parties, it is recorded that guests suffocated under a deluge of rose petals that had been released from the balconies above. Nero’s extravagance with roses was said to be one of the reasons the Roman Empire collapsed—so all you brides, beware! Roses are so popular mostly because they are so perfectly beautiful. They are reliable,
long-lasting, always available, and there are tens of thousands of varieties. Another reason for the flower’s popularity is its unmistakable fragrance. Not all commercially grown roses have fragrance, but some do. Florists have been known to overemphasize the fragrance of roses with rose oil on cotton balls tucked discreetly into the arrangements to give back what cross-breeding has taken away. Also, flowers for a ceremony or special occasion often are purchased up to two weeks in advance to have them fully opened (why waste one row of precious petals?). The pleasing round petal shape works well with traditional wedding work. It also can be chic and contemporary when used with tropical foliage and florals. Roses always have been a part of romance. It is said Cleopatra wooed Mark Antony with rose petals. Certainly, anyone who grew up in a house full of sisters (like myself) can attest to the success of what a dozen long-stemmed red roses can do for young love—very effective. Roses,
By John Sullivan
especially red ones, are a suitor’s go-to when wooing their love interest. Since the Middle Ages, the orangeries and hothouses—first of royalty, then the very wealthy—have kept roses in use, from the heady, balmy days of spring’s rambling blooms to the opulent winter profusion of roses for holiday glamour and romance. In these grey days of late winter, nothing will make your heart sing as loudly as a few fragrant roses in a simple vase. I prefer something portable, so I can have them on my breakfast and dinner table, the coffee table during the evening, and the bedside table when retiring. It’s like carrying a precious jewel around to please your eyes, delight your nose, and fill your soul. In The Butterfly, Hans Christian Andersen tells a story of a butterfly who wished for a bride. To exist, the butterfly said he needed “freedom, sunshine, and a little flower for a companion.” I’m sure he meant to say a rose.
Wedding expert John Sullivan has worked with partner Ken Miesner for 40 years at Ken Miesner’s Flowers, where they have collaborated for some 1,200 weddings! ‘Like’ him on Facebook under ‘Wedding Wisdom,’ where guests are welcome to post pictures, and leave comments and opinions.

The space is designed for open-to-the-public demonstrations, and features strategic lighting and a mirror to help those farther away from the action see what’s going on. “Everything that we do is to keep people active and independent, and this is just a new way to do that—and the new space has given it a jolt of excitement,” says Goldstein. Drawing and Painting Seniors are exploring the fine arts at Friendship Village Chesterfield in two different studio arts classes: drawing and painting. For the drawing course, the supplies are simple. “I gave them a black charcoal pencil, a white charcoal pencil and grey-toned paper—and no erasers,” says creative arts director Laura Lebeda. “None of us have used erasers for months, and really beautiful drawings have come out of it.” The painting course uses acrylic paints and ranges from learning the basics to copying the work of master painters. Finished pieces are then displayed on a gallery wall outside of the studio. “They just seem really excited and happy to learn. Maybe at first, they were very tentative of not being good, but…from there you can tell they’re growing by leaps and bounds,” Lebeda says, adding that the class also teaches students to see things differently. “There’s a way to learn to look at something in detail, and it really enhances your life.” This seems to be the case

for her students, as she notes that some have mentioned a greater appreciation for architecture after a similarly themed art class. Chair Yoga It has the benefits of yoga, without the issue of losing your balance: Barbara Berson, master yoga instructor and registered nurse, has adapted the discipline to be done sitting in a chair, and teaches it at The Gatesworth, along with other area locations. “When people invite their kids or grandkids and they come to the class; afterwards,
they’ll usually come to me and say, I didn’t realize this was such a workout!” Behrens says the majority of her students at The Gatesworth have never tried yoga before. “I love it—I see their faces light up.” The course involves work for the arms and legs, as well as yoga breathing and relaxation. “I end every class with relaxation,” she says. “I try to remind them, Use this when you’re put on hold with the phone company, for example—do your relaxation. They’ll tell me, I was able to fall asleep last night so easily from what I learned in your class.“

Q&A with Sean McClanahan of Fidelity Investments

T’S NO SECRET THAT THE COST OF COLLEGE IN THE U.S. IS rising. Although amounts can vary widely, a four-year college education can be more than $150,000, according to CollegeBoard’s 2014 Trends in College Pricing report. That could be a major contributor to why grandparents are increasingly stepping up to help finance their grandchildren’s education: A recent study by Fidelity Investments shows that 53 percent of grandparents are saving, or plan to save for such costs, while 90 percent report that they would do so if asked. We spoke to Sean McClanahan, a VP at Fidelity and head of its Ladue office, about the study.

Is this a new trend, and what are the causes? I don’t know that its necessarily a new trend, but I do think it’s gaining momentum. It’s a big challenge paying for college, and it can be more of a team effort these days. Grandparents are trying to be a bigger part of that, and are having conversations with their family about how they can help out. This is the first time we’ve done this study, so we don’t have numbers for previous years, but we did notice an increase of about 12 percent in the number of grandparents opening ‘529’ accounts. What are the benefits of 529 accounts as a savings tool? They’re one of a couple different ways people can save for college, and one big reason they’re used is the tax advantages. If the funds are used to pay for tuition, fees, books or supplies at accredited institutions, they can get tax deductions and tax-free growth. People also like the control they get: They can change beneficiaries, if needed, which is a huge advantage. If you originally decide to help one grandchild, and they get a scholarship, you can change it to another beneficiary. You’ll also find there are financial-aid impacts. When you fill out your FAFSA paperwork, there is something called the expected family contribution. If you use a 529 account, it doesn’t impact your financial aid as much as some other forms of savings. Of course, if you make enough, at some point, there might not be any needbased financial aid available regardless.
“I THINK EVERY FAMILY HAS A DIFFERENT FINANCIAL SITUATION, AND NOT ALL GRANDPARENTS ARE IN A POSITION TO HELP IN THIS WAY. WE TELL FOLKS TO MAKE SURE YOU TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF FIRST, AND CONSIDER YOUR OWN FINANCIAL SITUATION.” SEAN MCCLANAHAN, Fidelity Investments
of debt, so how are we going to get there? A lot of times that conversation doesn’t happen; and people say, I would have helped but I really was never asked and I don’t want to step on toes. But it’s happening across the spectrum more and more these days, because the cost of college has gone up.
Are grandparents in a better position to contribute to education costs than in past years? I think every family has a different financial situation, and not all grandparents are in a position to help in this way. We tell folks to make sure you take care of yourself first, and consider your own financial situation. You can’t take a loan out for retirement, but you can take a loan out for college, if need be, so you have to make sure your own financial situation is there.
Is it mostly in high-income families where they are able to help? It’s across the spectrum. Grandparents are feeling like they want to help out as much as possible. One of the statistics our study found is, if asked to help, 90 percent said they would be willing to consider it; but only 20 percent of friends and family have asked for that type of help. It’s sitting down with the family and starting that conversation: I don’t want the grandchildren to come out of school with a lot
How much of the cost are grandparents absorbing, and how are they spreading it among multiple grandchildren? I think every family is different. When we asked how much the folks are contributing, the median was about $25,000; and 35 percent contribute $50,000 or more. A lot of times, they’ll open the account with the first grandchild’s birth and put money in. As grandchildren start going to college, the grandparents or parents can have the control of the 529 account, and then switch out beneficiaries based on who needs it: Some of the kids might get scholarships, others might go out of state. How early do grandparents start saving for college costs? It’s never too early to start saving; the tax deferral and the tax-free withdrawals are that much better if you start earlier.

Celebrating its 30th year in business, Geotechnology, Inc. recently donated a total of $30,000 to 14 area organizations, including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri, The Alzheimer’s Association and Ronald McDonald House. Employees at each branch selected charities to gift $5,000 to, based on their community needs and personal involvement. Members of the Jewish Family and Children’s Service Tree of Life Society gathered at the home of Mike and Debbie Lefton for a recent celebration, honoring the group’s significant donors. The organization supports the region’s at-risk youth, seniors and families who need emergency financial assistance or experience food insecurity.
The burden of childhood hunger in the St. Louis area just got a little bit lighter, thanks to Dierbergs Markets and its customers. The company recently delivered more than 10,000 cans of food to Operation Backpack, a program sponsored by Operation Food Search that seeks to serve the more than 170,000 children living at or below the poverty level in the metro area. On the last day of school before weekends or holiday vacations, children participating in the program discreetly receive a backpack loaded with nutritious, easy-to-prepare foods, and return the empty backpack on the following Monday to be refilled. Setting a new personal record, the students and staff in the Parkway West High School social studies department collected more than 4,800 food items and $1,400 for the Circle of Concern Food Pantry. This is the third year in which the department has participated in the service-learning project, in which students connect their unit about the Great Depression with a food drive challenge.

It may not be your cup of tea—err, wine—but global color authority Pantone has announced that Marsala is its pick for the 2015 Color of the Year. In vivid contrast to previous colors of the year, such as vibrant Tangerine Tango, Honeysuckle and 2014’s Radiant Orchid, Marsala strikes a rather somber note and has stirred up controversy in the blogosphere. PANTONE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR LEATRICE Eiseman explains the color choice this way: “While Radiant Orchid, the captivating 2014 color of the year, encouraged creativity and innovation, Marsala enriches our mind, body and soul, exuding confidence and stability.” Much like the fortified wine that gives Marsala its name, Eiseman says the tasteful hue “embodies the satisfying richness of a fulfilling meal,” and translates easily to fashion, beauty, industrial design, and home furnishings. In interiors, Marsala can provide a unifying element when incorporated in accessories and paint schemes. It also pairs exquisitely with neutrals, monochromatic mixes of peachy pinks, and positively sparkles against antiqued gold metallics. Pantone suggests that Marsala is a natural fit for the kitchen and dining room, especially when incorporated in tabletop items, small appliances and linens. Eiseman predicts the hue will be especially prominent in striping and floral patterns found in printed placemats, dinnerware, bedding and throws. Fashion designers were early adopters of Marsala with brands like Fendi, Michael Kors, Daniel Silverstain, Hervé Léger by Max Azria, and Dennis Basso incorporating it in their new resort collections. It’s also appearing in stores as a popular choice for jewelry and fashion accessories, including handbags, hats, footwear and the burgeoning market of wearable technology.

HOME Expressions Is Ready for Spring with a Fresh New Palette Are you the type (that would be Type A, of course) who’s ready for new spring décor before the Christmas decorations are even put away? If you find yourself dreaming about a fresh new palette for your home, you’ll want to check out the new yellow and navy upholstery options from Expressions Furniture in Clayton. We liken the combination to a great classic navy blazer and a favorite pair of jeans, paired with a jaunty yellow scarf and some great gold jewelry. “We love the Pimlico chair,” says Expressions’ Anne Tipton. “It’s a new transitional piece that works with everything. It can serve as an accent chair or a host chair in a dining room. The Wellesley sofa is a classic tight back, English-arm style—ageless. The crisp white with the blue and yellow accents gives it a fresh, updated look.”

Important St. Louis Art Nouveau Collection to Sell at Auction The Louis Daniel Brodsky Collection of Art Nouveau will be auctioned during a single-owner sale on Feb. 22 at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers in Chicago. The collection hails from St. Louis, where Hindman opened a regional office last year, and includes furniture and decorative arts by Louis Majorelle, Emile Galle, Tiffany Studios and Henri de Toulouise-Lautrec. To gain insight into how the collection was amassed, it’s useful to know something about the late Mr. Brodsky, a businessman, scholar, collector and prolific poet who, by the age of 73, had written some 12,000 poems. Brodsky was a serial collector, who delved deeply into a single area before moving on to the next. He began by collecting Americana antiques before turning his interest to William Louis Daniel Faulkner, amassing one of Brodsky the largest collections of Faulkner materials in the world (which was later acquired by Southeast Missouri State). Brodsky then began collecting the work of Ernest Trova, the surrealist artist from St. Louis, and later, Art Nouveau. More than 350 lots will be available at auction. Louis Daniel Brodsky was born in St. Louis in 1941, where he attended St. Louis Country Day School. After earning a bachelor of arts degree from Yale University in 1963, he received a master of arts in English from Washington University in 1967, and a master of arts in creative writing from San Francisco State University the following year.

Winter Gems
T
By Pat Raven, Ph.D. and Julie Hess
he quiet winter garden offers little in the way of floral color until the bashful wee hellebores sneak out their silken buds. With little fanfare, the leaves emerge in autumn as everything else fades away. Waiting patiently under a blanket of snow or a bank of windblown leaves, the Christmas rose (Helleborus niger) comes out to bloom around the time of the old Julian calendar Christmas, which fell in early January. In a very cold Missouri winter like this one, they may wait until February to peek out. Not Bashful Anymore! Most species of hellebores send up their flower

Home buds with shy faces that only smile to the soil. Placement in the garden is best when they are well up on a slope and can be seen from below. Newer hybrid hellebores have been selected to hold their heads up high with outturned flowers. This enhances their beauty in the garden as they slyly peek out from their nest of deep-green leaves. Breeders have avoided fully upward-turned flowers as rain collects in them and spoils the flowers. New hybrids have been produced in a broad range of colors, flower forms and sepal patterning. Most hellebores range from white into pink, darker to maroon and into a grayed slate color. I prefer lighter colors for visibility, but some of those sexy reds or fancy apricot strains are great as floated cut flowers. Semi-double anemone-flowered forms and fully double hybrids now are readily available. Happy as a Hellebore Lenten roses are almost-perfect perennials for St. Louis. They thrive in alkaline soils and shaded gardens. They don’t require special pruning or frequent division. The bloom comes when the garden has little to offer and the deer don’t care for them. They are poisonous, so don’t let your pets chew on them. Double-dig the planting hole and backfill with extra organic matter; compost, if you have it. Fertilize very lightly with wellaged manure and mulch well for summer moisture retention. They will thrive in moist woods, but still do well in sunny borders. Where conditions are right, they will selfsow, multiplying over the years to be a very satisfactory groundcover. With a good selection of hybrids, we may be able to stretch into four months of winter rose bloom. Most selections are totally hardy for St. Louis. Some varieties are locally available; but hellebores ship well, so more selections are available from specialty growers.

Choice Hellebore Hybrids Propagating hellebores by division takes decades to multiply a desirable clone to sufficient numbers to place them in the market. Instead of selling genetically identical clones, most commercially traded hellebores are raised from seed from careful crosses between desirable specimens and sold as ‘mixes’ or ‘collections.’ Even so, they are expensive and run from about $15 to $50 each.
The Ballard Group (H. X ballardiae) is a seed-grown series from the early hellebore hybridizing efforts of the late Helen Ballard of Malvern, England. She selected for large, outward-facing flowers and healthy, disease-resistant specimens. This month’s article was inspired by a Plant Delights catalogue photo of the newest H. x ballardiae selection called ‘Raulston Remembered’. A simple, elegant soft pink single form with superior foliage quality, it was named in memory of my late college professor, the great plant collector Dr. J.C. Raulston of N.C. State. Seeing this new selection spurred me to look into the most recent releases. Here are some of the best Ballards: • ‘Cinnamon Snow’ white flowers aging to cinnamon • ‘Mahogany Snow’ cream flowers with rose reverse, mid-season • ‘Spring Party’ late bloomer with soft white flowers with green and white marbled leaves • ‘Pink Frost’ with bicolor buds opening to pink, with silvery foliage

The Lenten Roses in the H. x Hybridus Group (formerly known as x orientalis) includes delights such as Double Ladies Mix selections, which offer a variety of double-flowered specimens in white, yellow, apricot, pink, red and purple. The Winter Jewels series includes: • ‘Amethyst Glow’ with nodding deep maroon flowers with a slightly lighter edges • ‘Apricot Blush’ with deep rose markings in spots, veins or picotee edging • ‘Berry Swirl’ in lovely rose to raspberry double flowers with yellow centers • ‘Cherry Blossom’ a white peony-form flower with delicate cherry red veining • ‘Cotton Candy’ offers large light pink double flowers • ‘Black Diamond’ with deeply nodding single nearly black flowers in slate, burgundy and
dark red • ‘Onyx Odyssey’ nearly black shades of fully double blooms • ‘Rose Quartz’ is a stunner with creamy yellow double flowers and rose pink picotee edges • ‘Peppermint Ice’ is a snappy double water lily style with shades of rose pink with deeper edges • ‘Ruby Wine’ and the double ‘Red Sapphire’ both offer deep red flowers with yellow stamens The Christmas Roses in the Niger Group include ‘Jacob,’ with red stems; and ‘Josef Lemper’ which are both pure white selections of the species H. niger and among the first to bloom. Both strains are often used as holiday pot plants from the florist. Silver Leaved Foliage is found in ‘Silver Lace’ (H. argutifolius cv., the Corsican hellebore), which has
exquisite pale lime green flowers rising up from the dramatic pewter/silver rosette of leaves. ‘Silver Dollar’ has lovely true silver leaves with a slight pink tinge that complements the rosy-mauve buds and soft green flowers. ‘Silver Moon’ has pink buds opening to fresh white flowers that start fading back to rose after a few weeks open. The Stinking Hellebore (Helleborus foetidus) has an unfortunate name. No above-ground portion of this plant is aromatic, just strikingly beautiful in a green-on-green architectural way. Another cheeky cultivar is ‘Fine Feathered Friend’ with very slender leaf blades. Your garden will have more seasonal interest with a few more hellebores in it.

FOUR-WHEEL-DRIVE SEDANS:
A Fancy-Schmancy Smooth Ride
BY ROBERT PASTER
W
Bentley Flying Spur V-8
transmission. Paddle-shifters are available, but probably won’t get used after the first week of ownership. Gas mileage is 16 mpg city, 26 highway. Driving it imparts a feeling of wealth and stature. Mercedes-Benz of St. Louis sales manager Matt McMillin is greatly impressed by the S550. “I love the updated interface and how the car rides; it’s a good balance between sport and luxury. It’s very well poised for its size.” Base price for the S550 is about $98,000; the one I drove with options went for $118,000. Another attractive four-wheel-drive sedan for the well-to-do is the Bentley Flying Spur V-8. With a gorgeous front end with four large round bi-xenon headlights, swept-back fenders, and graceful body lines, the Flying Spur is a very good-looking sedan. Though the Flying Spur is now in its second generation, the V-8 (instead of W-12) engine option is new for 2015, and reduces the price by about 10 percent, but the horsepower only by about 100. The interior, of course, is Old-World luxurious, with acres of rich leather and lots of beautiful realwood trim. It’s the quality of the leather and wood that really makes Bentleys stand apart from massproduced luxury cars. The hand-stitched steering wheel is a thing of beauty in itself. Interior features include quad automatic climate control (dual automatic for front- and rear-seat passengers), 14-way heated and cooled electric seats with a built-in massage feature, a back-up camera, blind-spot monitoring, organ stops to open and close air vents, and a large touch-screen video display in the center of the dash to control navigation, audio and vehicle settings. The power open/close boot (trunk) is huge
and very deep. Rear-seat passengers get the royal treatment with heated and cooled adjustable seats with massage, plenty of leg room, and a digital controller about the size of an iPhone that can be taken out of its holder and held to adjust the rearseat climate control, electric rear sunshade, and the audio and seat functions. The Flying Spur is motivated by a powerful 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V-8 engine putting out 500 horsepower to all four wheels via a silky-smooth 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle-shifters. Acceleration is brisk—really brisk, considering its 5,300-pound curb weight: zero to 60 in only 4.9 seconds. The price for this power is gas mileage of only 14 city, but a decent 24 highway. Steering is a bit overboosted at first, but tightens up with higher speeds. The suspension can be both comfortable and sporting, thanks to adjustable air springs with continuous damping control. With shocks and transmission in sport mode, the Flying Spur is entertaining to drive. In comfort mode, it’s a smooth-asglass limousine. There’s just something very special about a Bentley, whether you’re driving it or being driven in it. Just ask the Queen: She has one. Ephraim Schmitt, manager of Bentley St. Louis explains, “The Flying Spur is far and above the best all around car you can buy in terms of comfort, performance and craftsmanship. It’s a four-door, yet it’s fast as a sports car; and has a large trunk and tons of rear-seat room.” Base price for a Flying Spur V-8 is right about $200,000, well equipped. Of course if that’s not enough, you can easily spend thousands on options, as well.

HAT’S BETTER THAN A big, luxurious sedan? How about a big, luxurious sedan with allwheel-drive so you can get wherever you need to go in any kind of weather? The benchmark of big luxury sedans for years has been the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, and the 2015 S550 carries on the Mercedes tradition of packing the latest luxury and safety technology in a fancy, state-of-the-art vehicle with conservative good looks and all the bells and whistles you can think of—and then some. Luxury amenities include three-stage heated and cooled seats, with a programmable massage feature, blind-spot monitoring, adjustable interior and exterior lighting, and a 360-degree camera feature that allows you to see all around your vehicle for maneuvering in tight places. It does pretty much everything for you except brush your teeth. A large sunroof lets in plenty of light and air. Beautiful wood trim on the center console and doors adds a touch of warmth and elegance, as does the two-tone leather on the dash. A large video display in the center of the dash displays a compass, video controls, navigation and the dual automatic climate controls, and acts as the video display for the back-up camera. Hard buttons for the HVAC make adjusting the cabin temperature and fan speed a breeze. A scroll knob adjusts audio levels; but otherwise, the display on the video screen is controlled by a remote knob between the seats that forces you to take your hand off the steering wheel—and sometimes, your eyes off the road—to make adjustments. A new touchpad system complements the knob; and with a little experience, it can be used like a touch-screen device with swipes and even letter recognition to manipulate the screen. Rear-seat room is huge. NBA players would have no trouble stretching out in back. With air vents, electric sun shades, a separate sunroof, a 115-volt outlet and make-up mirrors that drop down from the ceiling, the back seat is not a bad place to ride. Overall, the S550 has a solid, heavy feel to it, which carries over to its driving characteristics, which are a good blend of luxury and performance. Power steering is a little over-boosted, but it’s got a nice, smooth ride and handles pretty well for a big, long sedan. To save fuel, the engine shuts off when you’re stopped, and it has the smoothest re-start I’ve experienced in a car with that feature. There’s plenty of acceleration from the 4.7-liter, 449-horsepower turbo V-8 engine, which sends power to all four wheels via a 7-speed automatic

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler during the 72nd Annual Golden Globe Awards
Golden SO, THE GOLDEN GLOBES TOOK PLACE LAST Sunday. For those not in-the-know, the Golden Globes are the awards that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association sells...er... confers...to outstanding work in film and television. This week, an uncharacteristically varied group took home statues, while hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler peppered the crowd of “spoiled, mildly talented brats” with jokes befitting their celebrity. The joke of the night came when when the women were discussing the Sony hacking incident over the release of The Interview. Fey commented that Kim Jong-un had called the movie “intolerable and an act of terror,” but Fey went on with the punchline: That wasn’t even the worst review the movie got. Painful Cosby jokes aside, it was a very well-hosted show. Best Movie, Drama Boyhood When a cast and crew dedicates 12 years to a project, a statue seems the least we can do. Best Movie, Comedy or Musical The Grand Budapest Hotel Even if the film was lacking, Wes Anderson’s acceptance speech makes it completely deserving. Best TV series, Drama The Affair Like a bolt out of the blue, this new and riveting Showtime series claimed the prize. Best TV Series, Comedy Transparent Jeffrey Tambor’s captivating performance brought home the prize.

Inherent Vice DRUG TRIP
RATING: 6 out of 10
I
’M A BIG FAN OF THE GUMshoe detective story. I like the tongue-in-cheek skewering of everything from organized crime to law enforcement to Hollywood. It can be a fun, offbeat, creative experience. This film, however, made me want to jab a fork into my thigh. Doc (Joaquin Phoenix) is a stoner private detective living in an L.A. beachfront community in the ’70s. He is settling in for a quiet night when his ex, Shasta (Katherine Waterston), appears. She explains that her lover, a millionaire real-estate developer, is going to be the victim of a plot by his wife to have him institutionalized and steal his fortune. (If you didn’t follow that, it doesn’t really matter. The plot is the least of your worries at this point.) Doc begins investigating, and straight down the rabbit hole he goes: sex, drugs and rock’n’roll. For all its quirkiness and complexity, I couldn’t help but think that this was a paler Pulp Fiction. Even the reunion of Walk the Line stars Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon does little to endear the film. I can appreciate this movie, I even laughed out loud several times, but in the end, it falls flat. The writing has flashes of brilliance, but it means very little if you can’t engage.

O
N A GOOD DAY, THE third installment of an action-movie franchise is like curling up with a well-worn copy of a pretty good book. What it lacks in inventiveness and depth, it makes up for with the comfort of familiarity and predictability. This movie has all the requisite car chases and explosions. It has the encore performances and the surprise twists. Yet, not surprisingly, it is a phoned-in third installment of what could have been an incredible action-movie trilogy. Even saving grace, Liam Neeson, seems to understand this is only the paycheck for his beach house. Bryan Mills (Neeson) is living a quiet life. His daughter, Kim (Maggie Grace), is attending college; while his ex-wife, Lenore (Famke Janssen), is struggling with an unhappy marriage to inscrutable businessman Stuart (Dougray Scott). (On a side note: I’m not sure if she divorced the bumbling Stuart from the first film and married another, more ominous Stuart, but I’m not going to let it keep me up.) When Lenore is murdered in Bryan’s apartment and he is discovered holding the bloody knife, the chase is on. It’s up to a thoughtful detective, Franck Dotzler (Forest Whitaker), to unravel the mystery. No one gets taken. That’s my beef. No one. Gets. Taken. I mean, come on. The whole concept is based on the premise that Bryan Mills can rescue the innocent victim and get the bad guys. So, instead, we get a lukewarm rehashing of The Fugitive. It’s an OK rental for a rainy afternoon.
Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner BY MARK BRETZ
STORY: In the late 1960s, Matt Drayton is a newspaper publisher in San Francisco; his wife, Christina, owns an art gallery. Their domestic servant, Matilda ‘Tillie’ Binks, keeps everything humming in their well-to-do home, which is a bit quieter since their daughter Joanna (Joey) has gone away to college. Unannounced, Joey arrives home one day to the delight of the household. Not so delightful is the appearance of a young man with her. Not only has her family never met him, but when they do, they see that he is black. He’s also 11 years older than Joey and a widower, and he happens to be a world-renowned scientist who does cuttingedge research in Africa. But getting back to that first difference: Will Matt and Chris, lifetime political and social liberals who taught their daughter to treat everyone the same, approve of Joey’s choice of a husband in a racially divided society?

COMPANY: Repertory Theatre of St. Louis VENUE: Browning Mainstage, Loretto-Hilton Center, 130 Edgar Road DATES: Through Feb. 1 TICKETS: $21-$76; contact 968-4925 or repstl.org
RATING: A Playwright Todd Kreidler’s adaptation of William Rose’s Academy Award4 on a scale winning screenplay was first mounted in Atlanta in 2013. Now, The Rep’s of 1-to-5 associate artistic director Seth Gordon brings this two-act drama to the stage just months in the wake of Ferguson, serving as a sobering background to compare and contrast to the Civil Rights time of the ’60s. More reviews The 1967 film was directed by Stanley Kramer, who wasn’t afraid to tackle controversial subjects. With more than one in six modern marriages now interracial, the major plotline isn’t as daring as it was 50 years ago. On the other hand, race relations haven’t changed much at all in a way that Gordon perceptively notes: How often does a white couple invite a black couple to their house for dinner, even in 2015?
available at laduenews.com
Anderson Matthews and Joneal Joplin, as comfortable and reliable as a pair of worn but sturdy gloves in a Midwestern winter, head the cast of The Rep’s presentation. Matthews expertly balances Matt’s liberal persuasion against the harsh, even dangerous, realities he sees in his daughter’s future should she go through with her plans for marriage. Joplin, in his 93rd Rep appearance, has great fun as Matt’s golfing partner, Monsignor Ryan, who wholeheartedly approves of Joanna’s marriage to Dr. John Prentice Jr. Contrasting with Ryan’s pleasure is Hilary St. George, an employee at Chris’ art gallery, played masterfully by Elizabeth Ann Townsend. Richard Prioleau does well as the too-goodto-be-true Dr. Prentice; while Shannon Marie Sullivan is more successful at showing Joey’s somewhat spoiled demeanor than in demonstrating the adult maturity that Joanna demands, a weak link in the production. Margaret Daly brings wisdom and perspective to the role of Chris, while Inga Ballard makes the most of the juicy lines she’s given as Tillie. Perri Gaffney and Leo Finnie are terrific as Dr. Prentice’s own parents, who offer contrasting opinions about their son’s possible marriage. At times, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner seems antiquated, while at other times it appears still relevant. Either way, it offers serious food for thought.

As reported earlier, Home Wine Kitchen had shut its doors for good at the end of 2014. Well, it didn’t take long before someone snapped up Home Wine chef CASSY VIRES for their kitchen. She’s taken the position of head chef at Juniper in the CWE. Can’t wait to taste her work there! Looks like the four area Romano’s Macaroni Grill locations have been shuttered. No word from the corporate folks yet as to the reason—we’ll keep you posted.
It’s that delicious time of year again. Stone Soup Cottage will be holding its annual Wild Game Dinner on Wednesday, Jan. 28. The event starts at 6:30 p.m., and dinner will be served at 7 p.m. Cost is $150 per person, which includes the chef’s tasting menu and wine flights. For reservations, call 636-244-2233. Peacemaker Lobster & Crab Co.
Solid on the Seafood BY SIDNEY LEWIS
PEACEMAKER LOBSTER & CRAB CO. WAS ONE of the most anticipated St. Louis restaurant openings of 2014. From frequent visits since its debut, we can unequivocally say the wait was more than worth it. The second restaurant from Chef Kevin Nashan of Sidney Street Cafe, the eatery is focused squarely on seafood, specifically the delicacies prevalent in the country’s coastal areas. It’s based in the space that housed the original location of Niche. Anyone who dined at that establishment back in the day likely will not recognize this latest incarnation of the space. Gone are the white tablecloths and elegant appointments, replaced with distressed wood surfaces and rustic accents like metal washtubs doing duty as shades for the light fixtures. The decor manages to provide a down-home feel without feeling forced or overly ‘designed.’ To start, the Clam Chowder ($5) is highly recommended. Size-wise, it’s somewhere between a cup and a bowl, topped with some chives. Unlike some chowders, this one has plenty of clams, and the flavor of the seafood actually comes through instead of being bland and milky. One of the hallmarks of the Peacemaker menu is the selection of Boils, based around either Lobster (market price), Shrimp ($24) or Blue Crab (market price). These feasts, perfect for two, feature your seafood of choice with potatoes, brussels sprouts, chunks of andouille sausage, and a flaky buttermilk biscuit. Not for the fussy, these spreads beg diners to roll up their sleeves and dig in. Another must-try are the Rolls. Sure, they’re
just seafood and bread, but these creations definitely transcend the sums of their humble parts. Our favorites so far are the two variations on the Lobster Roll, the Connecticut Style (market price), served warm with butter, and the Maine Style (market price), cold and dressed with mayo. You can’t go wrong with either one. The Peacemaker menu also boasts a slew of Poorboys and a wide variety of sides. Two of our favorites from the sides list are the Fried Green Tomatoes ($3) and the Lobster Frito Pie ($12). The tomatoes miraculously remain juicy inside their crunchy deep-fried coating. The frito pie, a take on that childhood favorite, has fried pork rinds covered in Frito dust and beans cooked in lobster stock, all served in a Fritos bag. Rich and decadent doesn’t even begin to describe this one. If you make it through your meal with any room left, do yourself a favor and try a slice of the simply classic Caramel Apple Pie ($5), with a dollop of vanilla soft-serve ice cream on top. Be advised, Peacemaker continues to draw the crowds and only takes reservations for parties of six or more, so be prepared for a bit of a wait. But, the restaurant also offers a wait-list option via the NoWait app for those with smartphones. The restaurant also recently started serving lunch Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. till 2 p.m., so it’s possible to pop in early for a taste of some of the items. No matter when you go, just make sure you go!

EMISPHERES FILLED WITH Honey Caramel, Cinnamon Honey Ganache, Salt Caramel and Winter Mint Ganache. Honey Foam, Box Turtles and Dark Chocolate Almonds with Cocoa Powder. These are only some of the sweet rewards resulting in the very worthy journey of chocolatier Rick Jordan, who set up shop in Chesterfield in July 2011. While a number of his creations’ names may be unique—with exploration encouraged—what is even rarer and almost incomparable about Jordan is that he actually makes his own chocolate—one of very few true creators of chocolate in the state of Missouri. “I am the only one making my own chocolate in St. Louis,” says Jordan, founder of Rick Jordan Chocolatier. “Making chocolate requires a whole other skill set, as well as specialized equipment and space, due to the purchasing of large quantities of cacao beans. It also is a very laborious process—I guess I’m just a glutton for punishment. But I’m so happy that I’ve chosen to do it this way— it’s what I’ve wanted to do for a very long time.” That ‘very long time’ goes back to his attending culinary school after realizing that his computer science degree from University of Missouri-St. Louis wasn’t going to be a part of his future. “After I graduated, I realized that I really didn’t like working in an office environment,” Jordan explains. And after a failed attempt of opening a pizzeria, he enrolled at L’Ecole Culinaire. “I was in its second class—the place was still being built when I was there,” he recalls. “I discovered baking and pastry by accident; and you know, you can only get your feet wet with chocolate there, as they didn’t have one-quarter of the equipment that I have here in my shop. We were doing everything with knives and sheet pans, but everything was done by hand, and I had a knack for it. I really enjoyed the artistic aspect of chocolate—I could mold and shape it—texturally, it was a cool medium.” While the chefs at L’Ecole Culinaire encouraged Jordan, it was a Parisian chocolatier who caught Jordan’s attention. “Patrick Roger was someone whom I looked up to going back to culinary school,” Jordan explains. “His work was just insane! I immediately loved his style, and I had never seen a guy so married to his work. I was just a huge, huge fan.” After L’Ecole Culinaire, Jordan continued his education and his journey with chocolate at Barry Callebaut in Chicago. He returned to St. Louis and helped to open Villa Farotto in Chesterfield, working his way up to pastry chef—all the while, he was making chocolate and refining his craft. Eventually, he began selling his chocolates at Villa Farotto. Then, after multiple trips to France and Italy for research and continuing education (read: “beating down doors to meet with chefs”), an opportunity presented itself that left Jordan with no other
“MAKING CHOCOLATE REQUIRES A WHOLE OTHER SKILL SET, AS WELL AS SPECIALIZED EQUIPMENT AND SPACE, DUE TO THE PURCHASING OF LARGE QUANTITIES OF CACAO BEANS. IT ALSO IS A VERY LABORIOUS PROCESS—I GUESS I’M JUST A GLUTTON FOR PUNISHMENT. ” RICK JORDAN, Rick Jordan Chocolatier
choice than to quit his job and follow his passion. “So, I kept going back to France, and I kept beating down the door of chef Patrick Roger, because he was my idol,” Jordan says, adding that he would visit the Patrick Roger boutiques often; and eventually, he befriended a woman with the Roger group. She offered Jordan the chance to meet Roger. “When I met him, he was like a French Bob Dylan,” Jordan laughs. “He mumbled every word, and I couldn’t understand what he was saying. And then I had this whole speech planned—that he is my biggest inspiration, blah, blah, blah—and everything just escaped me. He was polishing something

and not looking at me and then he asked, Are you done? He then said, OK, go. And as I started to leave, he said, No, get to work!” While he was at Patrick Roger, Jordan says there were only five chocolatiers, and he was the only American. They worked 12- to 16-hour days, which required a very high level of skill at a very fast pace to supply the eight or so Patrick Roger boutiques around Paris proper. “We were busting it out all day, every day,” Jordan explains. “I would go home and wash my chef’s coat in my bathtub with a scrubby, hang it to dry; and in the morning, it would still be damp. I’d walk back to work, and there would be nothing open to eat but maybe a crusty baguette and some warm wine. But this was a changing moment in my life. I was already doing chocolate on a professional level at home and doing it very well, but that experience showed me how much more I could get out of myself and how much more anyone working for me could give me. The experience was so hard, but I would do it again in a heartbeat.” After turning down a position with Patrick Roger, Jordan returned to the U.S. to follow his dream of opening his own boutique. But before Jordan left Paris, he asked Roger for some words of advice. “He told me that I shouldn’t look at what my competition is doing, but to only pay attention to what I am doing.” Once back in the States, Jordan was excited to learn that a machine he had become accustomed to using with the chocolate-making process in Continued on page 58 {LadueNews.com} JANUARY 16, 2015

DIV ER SIONS Continued from page 57 France was now being imported to the U.S. “I could have bought a new car or one of these machines by Selmi,” he recalls with a laugh. “I opted for the machine. I really fell in love with it—it even features a little conveyor belt like what we saw with I Love Lucy. It’s an enrobing machine. Without it, you just can’t keep up a shop full of products and wholesale accounts. I was ready for it.” Jordan says that the cacao beans for his chocolate are sourced through Fair Trade from the Guya Gua region of Venezuela. Beyond the beans, Jordan is very conscious to use local ingredients in his products, including herbs from his garden and honey from his own backyard beehives, local goat cheese, elderberries, Missouri pecans, and black walnuts that he gets from his grandfather in Steelville, Missouri, among other local fresh and in-season ingredients. In the chocolate-making process, Jordan explains that after receiving the cacao beans, which are fermented and dried, he roasts them to the flavor he desires. The beans are then cooled and the shells are removed from the nibs. “Last year, Missouri S&T’s senior class built a machine for me for this process because not a lot of equipment exists for this level of the craft,” Jordan explains. “I had a system that I was using, but it was very slow. Every year, the senior class of Missouri S&T in Rolla works on a class project to solve a real-world problem. They fell in love with my problem, and the class wanted to take it on.” Jordan notes that 70 percent cacao is

standard for his chocolate. And getting back to Jordan’s demispheres—he says these colorful, intriguing treats are his top seller. “Demispheres are molded half-circles, and I learned a little secret at Patrick Roger as to how to get them to look the way they do,” Jordan says. “I spray them with cocoa butter, which gives them color, and they are completely smooth like glass.” Yes, it’s been a long journey for Jordan. But, when

he finally found his passion by chance in the L’Ecole Culinaire kitchen, he never looked back. “When I went to France and Italy, I never even considered that I wouldn’t get what I needed,” Jordan recalls. “I knew exactly where I needed to be, and I was very, very fortunate to see the path that was laid out in front of me. I had eyes to see it and a means to walk it. It was never easy. It was always awkward, but I have been very blessed.”
