Rodríguez Muñoz, a 2019 Local Fellow, is an award-winning photojournalist and reporter who uses solutions journalism to build community. This year he teamed up with CatchLight again for a collaboration with CalMatters that captures what student life looked like in the spring of 2022. This has been a seminal year for CatchLight, one where we have both supported artist-led impact and helped change the field of visual journalism at the systems level, truly advancing nuanced and long-term representation in the state of California and globally.

Globally and locally, CatchLight fellows are documenting the richness of daily life; its celebrations, its problems and the individuals fighting for new solutions. They are creatives; photographers, videographers and visual journalists who capture life’s critical moments. And, they are innovators; piloting new engagement, distribution and business models to change the ways we access images and the impact they can have in the world. Together, we are informing, connecting and transforming communities.

Assembled here are some of our favorite recent images. They show us how residents in São Paulo, Brazil, Bloomington, California and Paris, France are fighting for environmental justice, how Berkeley High School students are standing up to improve access to mental health services for youth, how survivors who have lost their loved ones to COVID-19 are healing and how people everywhere are pushing for the changes they want to see in the world.

PRECEDING PAGE Larry Valenzuela Oil pumps in the Kern River Oil Field Bakersfield, California CatchLight Local in collaboration with CalMatters 2021 Valenzuela, a 2022 CatchLight Local Fellow, worked with CalMatters to dig into what the City of San Francisco plans to do with the 800-acre oil field it owns outside of Bakersfield. San Francisco voted not to renew Chevron’s decades-long lease for oil production on the site in 2020, following a climate ordinance that requires that no municipally-owned property be used to produce petroleum.

San Francisco has not yet decided what the land will be used for next, or who will cover the cost of sealing the 82 wells.

Tasneem Alsultan Um Muhammed and Um Hani Khaybar, Saudi Arabia From Seeing Saudi 2018 “My hope is that every woman can regain and have control over her own body and her own destiny. I intend to challenge the mainstream narrative about my country and people and offer an alternative insight into Saudi society, one that invites the viewer to draw similarities rather than emphasize differences. Alsultan, a 2019 CatchLight Global Fellow, is an investigative photographer and storyteller living in Saudi Arabia. Alsultan’s work focuses on documenting social issues and rights-based topics in the Arab Gulf region through a gender lens, challenging stereotypical perceptions of the Middle East and portraying a region and people that do not conform to expectations. She served as a juror for the 2022 CatchLight Global Fellowship.

These images allow for the experiences, realities and truths of others to be highlighted and to educate people who were not fully aware of an issue or experience, most often including myself when I begin working on a story. This understanding can help foster unity. I hope that photography can create and/or revitalize trust in the media during a time of extreme and often valid mistrust in the media.”

Its a community divided by the question of whether warehousing will provide long term economic prosperity.

Looking at photos opened a world that seemed so far away from my reality, and taking photographs has allowed me to push the limits of that reality, through lived experience and knowledge. I hope to pay forward that gift and expand how we can share images with people.”

Daniel Hagos, an Oakland-based Tigrayan activist, displays the flag of the Tigray region. For over 20 months, a civil war fueled by long-standing ethnic and political divisions in Ethiopia has spiraled into a humanitarian crisis.

Aziz, a 2022 CatchLight Local Fellow working with Oaklandside, is a visual journalist born, raised and based in Oakland, California. He uses photography as his primary storytelling medium, documenting the life and times of Oakland’s diminishing Black community and the resistance to rapid, inequitable changes in his hometown. The future of the Berkeley Kite Festival, which ran from 1986 until 2019 and drew crowds averaging 30K people, was threatened earlier this year when the city of Berkeley increased the cost of the permits by $40K. Berkeley’s Mayor Jesse Arreguin re-Tweeted this story when he appealed to the City Manager to change its position “...I encourage the city to reduce fees for the Kite Festival so it can continue to soar and continue.”

Isadora Kosofsky Ann and Mary Hawthorne, California From a series that shadows dual eligible beneficiaries for Arnold Ventures 2022 “Documentary photography affords people another perspective on their own lives because, as documentarians, we hold the weight of both the lightness and darkness of the person we shadow.

The photography can act as a form of evidence of humanness and an affirmation of someone’s reality, particularly when someone has had few witnesses to their journey. My hope is that my work encourages people to radically accept the complexities of those around them and the conflicts they carry inside themselves.”

Arnold Ventures commissioned CatchLight to help humanize the story of patients that are dual eligible, navigating both the Medicare and Medicaid systems. CatchLight partnered with photographer Isadora Kosofsky, whose sensitivity, knowledge and experience of the healthcare system brought depth and intimacy to the project. Arnold Ventures, founded by Laura and John Arnold, is dedicated to tackling some of the most pressing problems in the United States.

Kosofsky is a documentary photographer, writer and filmmaker based in Los Angeles and Albuquerque.

For her, the relationships formed with her sources are tantamount to the image-making process.

Born and raised in India, Harika Maddala moved to the United States with their family at age 19. As part of the series, students in each community were given disposable cameras to document their own experiences. They photographed their friends, classrooms, changing mask mandates, recess, afterschool activities and senior prom. Nevada Union High teacher Keri Kemble shared: “This was their first exposure to professional journalism and I think it opens their eyes as to how journalism works not only on our campus… We’re always learning about the best way to tell a story and thinking about how best can you tell the stories visually.”

Born in Addis Ababa in 1974, Muluneh, a 2018 CatchLight Global Fellow, graduated from Howard University in Washington D.C. Her photography has been published widely and can be found in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art, Hood Museum, The RISD Museum of Art and the Museum of Biblical Art in the United States.

In 2019, she became the first Black woman to co-curate the Nobel Peace Prize exhibition and in the following year, she returned as a commissioned artist for the prize. aidamuluneh.com

Every day I’m given the opportunity to learn something new from the people who allow me to photograph them. My goal is to portray those stories authentically, with dignity and truth, so that others are able to empathize and feel what I felt when I was behind the camera.”

Maney was a mentor for CatchLight’s Visions of Justice workshop while completing her bachelor’s degree in photojournalism at San Francisco State University. She is currently a staff photojournalist at The Detroit Free Press.

She previously covered national politics at The New York Times Washington bureau as a 2021-22 photography fellow. In August, Maney became the first photographer to receive the National Association of Black Journalists Michael J. Feeney Emerging Journalist of the Year Award. Her personal work focuses on housing inequality, education, disability and social issues that disproportionately impact Black and Brown communities.
