Missy came with Turtle and Annie when their elderly owner could no longer care for them. She is a little shy, but is getting used to things. She has her cat buddies and loves her comfy beds (who doesn’t!).
Andy is a 1-year-old stray who found himself homeless. He must have been owned and wandered away, because he’s a “people person” — social, talkative and loves kittens!
Morena, a beautiful Bengal cat, is nervous around other cats, so she spends most of her time in the run where she can hide safely from the other cats.
Mr. Big is a gorgeous 8-year-old boy who was placed here by a dear friend who needed us to look after him.
Hope, a 7-year-old dilute tortie, is a sweetheart, but on the shy side and would fit best in a quiet home. Hope’s portrait hangs in our Spay/Neuter Clinic to give the “hope” of adoption to all who pass through our doors.
Eenie is an 8-year-old sweetie whom we rescued with her babies, Meenie, Miney & Mo. She was so skinny, we named her Eenie. Meenie and Mo were adopted, but ... Miney is still here with her mom, Eenie, waiting for a forever home. Miney is a sweet cat who is just a little shy at times, but would be great with her own person. This mom and daughter duo are so attached, they must be adopted together.
Tigger is a 1-year-old and doesn’t understand why he’s in a shelter. We can’t figure it out either! He’s a playful guy who gets along well with other cats, but would need an experienced cat owner.

Brandy came to us from Animal Care and Control with her kittens who were adopted. Brandy has a foot fetish and attacks anyone who happens to have feet, which is the majority of us. We are trying to work with her but until then is only available for sponsorship!
Turtle came to us with Annie and Missy II when his owner could no longer care for him. He was frightened at first, but with some TLC he has adjusted to his new surroundings. He’s a lovable guy!

Murray, whose family member became severely allergic to him, was attacked by another cat shortly after coming to us. All healed, he’s been living safely in Dr. Susan’s office up high in his favorite box, but now he is the Mayor of the new run!
Finney and his siblings were left in a box to fend for themselves. He is still very wary of humans (who could blame him?). We’re working with him to let him know that not all people are irresponsible and cruel.
Dusty is a sweet but shy little girl who hasn’t found a home yet. She would make a fine addition to any family.
Fern is a sweet kitty who is shy and has a condition called Inflammatory Bowel Disease. She needs to be on special food and medicine. You can help us help Fern until she finds someone to take care of her by sponsoring her.
Bob is sweet, but very shy. When people come to adopt, Bob hides so they don’t get to see his personality. You have to go very slow with him. We rescued him from another shelter a few years back.
Alvin was left in a filthy carrier as a kitten, without food, hoping some kind soul would find him, but he never did learn to trust people. He’s a sweet little guy who is just too afraid of people to find his own home.
Benny is a sweet guy but he is very shy of people. He loves his cat friends, but never quite got used to being handled by people. He’ll play with us with interactive toys, but prefers to be with his own species!
Abbey was abandoned, left in a box to fend for himself. It’s no wonder he has never trusted humans. We are still trying to work with him.

Ziva had been stuck in a cage for 3 years at another shelter — her entire life! Finally liberated, she now waits for her own home. She is sweet and a little shy at first, but warms up quickly. Ziva is looking for somewhere to continue to stretch her legs and run after toys.
Vetty is a sweet girl who loves to play and to snuggle! She is about a year old and would make a great addition to any household.
Buffy is under one year old, but has already had kittens! All her babies were adopted and now Buffy waits for her own home. She is very nosy, but very loving.
Alice was a homeless cat, but she prefers to be on her own. Alice tolerates a pat on the head or two — never 3! She loves her treats and the window, and seems happy about that!
Mau Mau is a feisty old girl who we love to bits. She lived most of her life outdoors. Her caretaker was unable to take her in and feared that Mau Mau was too old to remain on the streets. Good thing she came in — she’s in renal failure and needs fluids several times a week, along with a special diet.
Buddy is one of our “feral” kitties, but he does let us pet him occasionally, and he follows our caretaker around talking to her! He’s a sweetie, who may be adoptable.
Fitty Cent has the best traits of his Bombay ancestors. Plagued with urinary tract problems, his owners couldn’t take care of him, and his vet arranged for Fitty to come to the sanctuary. We love this big guy, and he seems happy here.
Mr. Kitty had a few changes in his life that didn’t agree with him. One of our life counselors is working with him to help him be less grumpy — nothing that can’t be changed with a few treats!

Scotty was an indoor/ outdoor cat until his previous caretakers found that neighborhood businesses were using rat poison for rodent control. Scotty is about 10 years old and gets along great with other cats.
Bubba had a rough life on the streets until a loving family took him in and arranged for him to come to us. Bubba’s living the high life now and loves to be up on our “catwalk” and look down on everyone. Bubba prefers his kitty friends to us humans.
Betty prefers the company of her kitty friends to us. Have to say who could blame her? She also loves to be outside most of the time - except for when it’s really cold, then we find her snuggled up inside.
Polly D was named after her extra toes. She’s a sweet girl who is a little on the shy side and is waiting for someone to warm up to. Polly suffers from food allergies and is adoptable, but would need special food.
Baby is a shy little girl, but very sweet. She would probably do best in a quiet home. She’s a little less than 2 years old and is ready for her forever home.
Smokey (10 years old) gets shy when folks come to visit, which is the only reason she hasn’t been adopted. She’s very sweet with us, and just needs someone to understand some cats need to get to know you first, before they become lap cats.
Hugo is another shy guy who just hasn’t warmed up to us humans yet, although he does like kids. Hugo is 3 years old.
Angel was rescued from another shelter when her time was up. She was shy at first, but seems to be coming out of her shell. You can help Angel until she finds her own home by sponsoring her.

Rubio comes from a very dear friend who asked us to look after him. He is suffering from anemia and will likely need life-long treatment.
Cami is 3 years old, very playful, energetic, inquisitive and also quite the talker. She is the type of cat that will follow you everywhere, and she just loves company!
Houdini’s owner died and he was found in the house fending for himself. He has asthma as well as heart disease and is on medication. He’s an adoptable, sweet, special needs cat and will need monitoring for both conditions.
Sasha, a sweety approximately 3 years old, was living on the streets — pretty friendly for an outside cat. So a neighbor called the sanctuary and she’s been with us since. She loves to sit on laps and is a special needs kitty with a heart murmur.
Sammy is an old girl, who we found depressed and sitting in a cage at a kill shelter with no one even giving her a second look. PHLF rescued her with 11 others in jeopardy. At first she was petrified and striking out at us — now she’s a mush ball who can’t wait for the next treat!
Candy arrived at Animal Care and Control in Brooklyn and was frightened and very pregnant. She was swiping and hissing at everyone who went near th her. On April 10 , Candy gave birth to 5 adorable kittens, but was nearly impossible to handle. ACC sent out a plea for a rescue and luckily we had some room. Her babies have all been adopted, and Candy has calmed down and is happy!
Charlene came to us from Animal Care and Control with her kittens, Kiwi and Strawberry. Charlene was petrified when she first came to us, but is pretty relaxed now! Charlene would be a great addition to any home.
Kimba was adopted out from us 8 years ago. The only time he saw a vet was, unfortunately, to be declawed. Kimba is still trying to figure out why his family gave him up! Here he waits for his chance at a second, and hopefully, forever home.

Pesky lived his whole life in Brooklyn with an elderly owner who passed away right after Hurricane Sandy. When he came to us, he was fighting an infection in his tail, which has now completely healed. Pesky would love his own home, but until then is available for sponsorship.
Francey is one of those kitties who prefers to keep us humans at a distance! Well, to each his (or her!) own. C’est la vie!
R2D2, an evacuee from Hurricane Irene is outgoing and confident. He loves to be pet and especially loves belly rubs. He also loves going in the outdoor run where he watches birds, butterflies and squirrels.
Lambchop was an outdoor kitty and missed the socialization period where he would be comfortable with the human race. He
loves his cat buddies and thoroughly enjoys our new outdoor run.
Terra nearly spent the winter freezing with her 3 kittens until, just before Christmas, one climbed into the engine of a Mini Cooper. The whole family is now safe and warm and clearly not feral (love pets)!
Annie came to us when her elderly owner could no longer care for her. Annie is semi-feral and prefers cats to humans. She loves being able to go outside and resides in a cage free room with a few other cats.
If not for the cries of their sister, Cooper, (named after getting stuck in the engine of a Mini Cooper) Rosie and Dixon would have spent a life on the streets. Cooper’s frightened meow alerted our rescuers, who were able to trap the rest of Cooper’s family, including mom, Terra. Until someone scoops them up, you can sponsor this beautiful family.
Karla is an older girl who was found with a litter of kittens. Her kittens are grown now and in their own homes while Karla lives with us. Karla recently had a tumor removed which turned out to be cancerous. She is fine at the moment but will likely live the rest of her life with us making her as comfortable as possible.

Rhett is a 11/2-year-old handsome devil and is affectionate and playful. His markings are some of the most beautiful we have ever seen. Rhett was adopted as a kitten and returned to a shelter where his time was running out. He still waits for his forever home.
Shadow’s last owner lost her home and so, unfortunately, did Shadow. Shadow has adjusted well and is living in one of our cage free rooms, with her buddy, Frisky.
Chico was declawed on all four paws by his owners who later decided to turn him into a kill shelter. Chico lost his claws, his home and would have lost his life, but The Paw Project, The Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals and the Patricia H. Ladew Founda tion, Inc. joined to rescue him. But what heneeds is a loving forever home. You can sponsor Chico until he finds one.
Frisky’s owner lost her home and could no longer care for her. Frisky was so scared, she stopped eating and was diagnosed with hepatic lipidosis, which required a feeding tube. After 3 weeks, we are happy to say that Frisky is now eating without the tube and is recovering well.
Mickey is a sweet boy who was returned to us after 9 years by his owner due to allergies. Mickey has scarring in his left eye from a severe upper respiratory virus he had as a kitten. He has some sniffles now and then, but otherwise he’s healthy and looking for a new home!
Kimba is a 3 year old tortoiseshell who is extremely shy of people. We are slowly getting her to trust us, but at the moment she prefers her cat friends. You can help us help Kimba by sponsoring her.

Cee Cee is an 8-year-old girl whose owners dropped her off at a kill shelter full of fleas which resulted in terrible dermatitis causing hair loss from scratching so much. Cee Cee is now flea free and knows that even if she never finds a home, she will always have one with us.
Bart is a gorgeous boy who was found as a stray and turned into Animal Care and Control. He must have been owned, because he is sooooo friendly. He’s a big mush who would make a great addition to any household!

Clancy and his sister Ava were rescued by our friends at the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals. We don’t know too much of the history, but they are very bonded. They are a little shy, but we think in a quiet home, they will come around. They are very friendly and playful!

If something happens to you, who will take care of your cats? We often get phone calls from relatives who are left with someone’s beloved cats after they have passed or become disabled in some way. Have you planned for the future of your cats, or will they be brought to a city shelter to wait with hundreds of other homeless pets in hopes of another home? With the Ladew Cat Sanctuary’s Planned Giving/Surviving Pet Care Program, you can rest assured that your cats will be taken care of in a home-like environment, enriched with entertainment, medical care and love. If you’ve been thinking about the future of your felines when you’re no longer here to care for them, why not consider enrolling in our Surviving Pet Care program and allowing us the privilege of caring for them in your absence? In order to be eligible for this program, you must first become a Ladew Cat Sanctuary Member. Then, depending upon the number of cats you have, an additional fee(s) will be imposed, which will allow us to care for your cats for their lifetime. The Honorable William Magee, Chair, Committee on Agriculture New York State Assembly LOB 828 Albany, NY 12248 email: MageeW@assembly.state.ny.us Re: In Support of A1297 (Rosenthal) Dear Chairman Magee, I strongly support A1297, a bill introduced by Assemblymember Linda Rosenthal, which would prohibit “the declawing of cats or other animals…within the state of New York, except when necessary for a therapeutic purpose.” Cats naturally use their claws to assist in climbing and maintaining balance, to help them stretch and exercise, and to escape danger. Cats are commonly declawed in an attempt to protect furniture from unwanted scratching. Occasionally, animals are declawed in a misinformed attempt to protect human health, despite the CDC’s and NIH’s advice to “not declaw” to prevent opportunistic disease in immunocompromised individuals. There are safe and effective means to manage undesirable scratching behaviors through simple training and other established methods. Declawing, also known as onychectomy, is the amputation of all or most of the last bone of each of the toes of the animal’s feet. The American Veterinary Medical Association lists “anesthetic complications (including death), hemorrhage, infection and pain” as potential complications of declawing. Chronic pain syndromes, permanent lameness, and behavior changes have been described in the veterinary scientific literature as complications of declawing. Declawing is unnecessary and inhumane. It is banned in eight US cities, including Los Angeles and San Francisco. In many countries, including in the United Kingdom, Austria, Switzerland, and Sweden, declawing is illegal, or is considered unethical by established professional veterinary organizations.
