Newborn Guide

NATURAL PLANT BASED FIBRES

/ MIANN & CO

Editor’s Letter The newborn stage is one of the most precious seasons of life - marked by sleepy, milk drunk smiles, chunky little legs, late nights and early mornings, and the sweetest, most lovely of all cuddles. It’s a time that passes by so quickly. One moment your newborn is snuggled in close to your body, the next they’re rolling over and grasping for you as you put them to sleep at night - and within the blink of an eye, they’re crawling and walking and a real little human. At the start of the year, with our own children growing so quickly, we were thinking back at this beautiful time so fondly. Wondering how it’s not possible to bottle all those newborn moments - and then our Newborn Guide was born. Designed with the soul purpose to guide Mama & Baby through this time, we hope that you can capture the beauty of this season and grow and love with your new baby. 04 / A MUMMA’S NEEDS

Take Care of You SELF-CARE FOR MUM For new mums, the joy of looking after a tiny human comes hand-in-hand with a huge upheaval in almost every aspect of life. While your busy tending to your newborn’s needs, it’s essential to find some time to focus on your own physical and mental wellbeing. Even if it’s relaxing for half an hour while your little one sleeps, it’s important you remember to look after yourself, too. Keeping your body hydrated during this time is essential for supporting your healing and ensuring adequate breastmilk production. Keeping a bottle of water on had in essential, and we also love to sip on great tasting, organic teas. The skin undergoes a lot of growth during pregnancy and hydration is key to helping skin retain elasticity and to relieve dryness & irritation. Nutritious food is essential for new mums, but it’s not always easy to eat well. The nutrients we need after birth are greater than at any time during pregnancy, but we can find ourselves with little time or energy for preparing good food as new mums. Before baby is born, prepare some of your favorite dishes foods you know you’ll be excited to reheat and eat, and put them in the freezer.

06 / NATURAL FIBRE TOYS

Hand Made OUR BEGINNING & PURPOSE Made from 100% natural cotton fibres, our Softies & Hand Rattles are beautiful, handmade pieces that are perfect for all children – from babies, to toddlers, to school goers! Our business was born from our passion for natural fibres and making children happy. When we first set out on our journey 10 years ago, natural fibre toys weren’t a thing. Like all parents, we were concerned with our children’s well-being and safety – after our eldest son flared up with eczema that grew worse when playing with synthetic toys - we couldn’t help but wonder what was in those toys that caused such a reaction, and were they safe for our children to handle? From there, our homegrown, family business was born. With one mission - to educate our community on the benefits of natural fibres. When you think about children’s toys, you want them to be safe. When they spend so many hours playing with them, you don’t want to have to worry if they happen to put a piece of a toy in their mouths or snuggle down with them in bed at night.

18

We personally choose to not have synthetic fibre toys in our house, why? After researching further into how synthetic fibres were made, we were shocked. Synthetic fibres are made from crude oil – non-renewable fossil fuels that don’t break down, are cheap to produce and are essentially just plastic. If they’re so harmful to the earth by releasing carbon emissions, we wondered what they would do to our little ones – and that is why we made the switch. The handmade nature of our Softies and their all-natural fibres make them unique, heirloom pieces that we hope you and your children pass down for years to come.

10 / NATURAL RUBBER DUMMIES

Natural Soothers WHY WE LOVE THEM SO MUCH Crafted from a single mould of natural rubber, our natural rubber soothers are some of the safest, most hygenic dummies on the market. Because of this single mould, they’re among one of the most hygenic products on the market. This means there are no joins or cracks in the natural rubber soother where dirt and bacteria can accumulate. The Natural Rubber Soother shield is larger than conventional shields, designed to touch baby’s nose, providing closer simulation to breastfeeding. The Natural Rubber Soother is softer than silicone soothers, which makes it easy to wash and care for and also ensures that it won’t fall apart.

11 / OUTFITS FOR COMING HOME

GOTS Clothing DRESSING FOR ALL SEASONS Taking your little one home for the first time is a very special occasion—it’ll be one of those moments you remember forever, it is a celebration of a new life and motherhood. In warm weather, dress your baby in a t-shirt and light cotton pants, or a bodysuit - using a baby blanket to cover delicate, bare newborn legs. For the colder weather, footed leggings with a jumper, beanie, and warm blanket will work well. A jumpsuit with booties, a cute beanie is always a special look - just add your favourite blanket for an extra layer of warmth. When dressing a newborn, it’s best to choose clothing that won’t disturb them (because there’s nothing fussier than a new baby). Our clothing is specially designed to not bother your little one as much as possible, with adjustable neckline buttons and elasticated cuffs and waists.

12 / MODERN CLOTH NAPPY

Good for Bums WHY WE LOVE REUSABLE NAPPPIES Modern Cloth Nappies are washable, reusable pieces made from fabrics with water absorbing fabrics such as hemp and bamboo. They’re shaped just like a disposable, fasten with either velcro or press studs around the waist and have elastic around the leg to keep messes contained. Cloth Nappies are an investment, but are well worth the financial benefits. The exact savings will depend on a few factors (choice of nappies, frequency of changes, whether you use cloth part time or full time) but it’s possible to save around $2,000-3,000 per child over the duration of their nappy use. Here’s the stats: 5,500 nappy changes x .50c each nappy = $2,750 (50c per nappy change). Compared to 25 modern cloth nappies x $30 each = $750 (13c per nappy change). Many cloth nappies are produced from bamboo, which is naturally anti-bacterial, highly absorbent and soft on baby’s skin, as well as a sustainable source.

13 / HOW TO USE?

MCN How To’s HOW TO USE AND CARE FOR MCN We hear you, figuring out the best way to use and clean Modern Cloth Nappies can seem daunting. How do you clean them? How do you fit them? Do they smell? How do I dispose of their number twos? Worry not, continue reading on to discover all your questions ansered.

HOW DO I FIT THEM? Our Modern Cloth Nappies roughly fits bubs from 3.5kg to 16kg, so it should cover them from birth to toilet training. 1. Fit the nappy high up on your little ones back to ensure that

the gusset of the nappy is close to the crotch. For best

absorbency, the bamboo inserts need to be sitting

close to the skin so they can catch any liquid. If the crotch

isn’t sitting high enough it will sag, that could lead to leakage.

2. Adjust the nappy to the size of your baby. You can do this two

ways, by adjusting the width and the length:

39

LENGTH To adjust the length of the nappy, use the front 12 buttons that sit just on the gusset of the nappy, by snapping them together you can shorten the body of the nappy for newborns.

WIDTH Fit the left nappy flap first, securing tight with the two rows of snaps that run across the top of the nappy. Then, fit the right flap into the snaps. You can also secure the snaps on top of the left flap - this is a great technique for securing little ones with small waists. You can the nappy to fit snuggly around their wasit, but not too tight so they’re uncomfortable. 1. Make sure the nappy elastics are sitting at the top of their

thighs - the same way you would wear a pair of undies,

up tight against your body is the same way you want the

nappies to fit - this will ensure that the fit of the nappy is

nice and comfy for your little one.

2. And finally, double check to make sure the bamboo inserts

are sitting flush to the nappy and your bub. Any

curling or folded edges could result in leakage.

MEDIUM

SMALL

HOW DO I USE THE BAMBOO INSERTS? You can fit the bamboo inserts to best fit your baby’s individual needs for varying absorbency. For casual wear in older bubs, you may only use one liner if they’re not wetting as frequently. For overnight, you may use two or three liners to boost absorbency and reduce leakage. All our nappies come with two inserts, one large & one small. 1. Use the single smaller insert for standard abdsorbency for

a baby.

2. Fold the single larger insert at the line for a wider insert and

higher absorbency for a baby.

3. Attach the folded larger insert to the smaller insert for

extra absorbency.

4. Use the single large insert unfolded for standard absorbency

for young children.

5. Double up on the smaller insert and larger inserts for extra

absorbency for young children.

HOW DO I CLEAN THE INSERTS? The washing process is a super crucial part in ensuring the longevity and best use of your Modern Cloth Nappies. Follow the steps below for all aspects of maintence and cleaning:

41

BEFORE USE 1. Soak the bamboo insert overnight in warm water. 2. After soaking, wash inserts and nappy cover with washing

liquid or powder. We prefer using eco-friendly and natural

alternatives like EcoStore & Koala Eco.

3. Leave the nappy to dry completely - then you’re ready for use!

This is a super important step as it maximises the absorbency

of your liners.

AFTER USE 1. Once used and ready to wash, remove all solids and rinse any remaining soiling. We promise you won’t have touch any soiling - place solids into the toilet and rinse soaked or soiled inserts/nappies in the laundy sink. You could also invest in bio-degradable nappy liners that sit on top of the bamboo insert and can be picked up and disposed of, minimising the risk of touching any soiling. PRO-TIP: If not washing straight away, collect all rinsed nappies & liners in a nappy pail (you can even use a bucket with a lid, just make sure it has air holes to prevent odours and mold) until you have collected enough for a full wash. If using nappies interchangeable with disposables, wash as needed. Or use our Reusable Wet Bags while out and about so it all stays sealed and clean until opened again.

42

o

2. Pre-wash the nappy with washing liquid or powder in a 40 o

60 wash - either hand or machine washed.

This is an important step that removes excess soiling and

produces best results in the main wash. It also increases

the life of your inserts and cover by removing any ammonia

development and excess smells. o

o

3. Wash the nappies once more in a 40 - 60 wash with

washing liquid or powder. Don’t forget, it’s super important to

wash your nappy twice to ensure longevity of your nappy.

4. We prefer to air dry nappy pieces separately on a clothes

horse or clothesline, but you can tumble dry them at a low

temperature only if needed.

TOP TIPS Always remember leaks will happen. Even disposable nappies leak from time to time. Expect the first few tries of fitting your nappy to be a learning process and find out what works best for you and your family. Your are more than welcome to use stain remover with your nappy and inserts, however please note that the chemicals used in stain removers may decrease the lifespan of your nappy. Before storing away nappy covers & inserts, always make sure they are 100% dry. This minimises risk of mold developing and increases their lifespan. Invest in a rubber brush as an extra precaution for removing soiling as it’s easy to disinfect after use. 43

14 / HOW TO USE

Good for Everyone OUR REUSABLE WET BAGS Our Reusable Nappy Bags goes hand in hand with our Modern Cloth Nappies. Take these with you along with your nappies to put the dirty ones into so they stay sealed and the contents of the nappy doesn’t end up anywhere you wouldn’t want it! These bags are also super handy for wet or soiled clothing and keeping it all contained. Wet Bags help you transport your soiled cloth nappies with ease when you’re out of the home. They help contain odours and liquids, they’re reusable, leak resistant, odour proof and can be tossed in the wash with nappies after use. These waterproof bags with two large pockts can be used for much more than nappies. They can store bibs, cloth wipes, breast pads and cloth menstrual pads. They are also a great size for storing snacks for waste-free lunches and double as a handy laundry hamper when away.

15 / NATURAL REMEDIES

For Nappy Rash H O W T O T R E A T N A P P Y R A S H N A T U R A L LY All babies get nappy rash from time to time. While you might treat your baby’s sore, red bottom by applying an over-thecounter cream or ointment, home remedies for nappy rash can work just as well. Find out how to treat nappy rash by taking a look at our favourite remedies and products.

AT HOME NAPPY RASH BALM ½ a cup of shea butter, 2 tbsp coconut oil, ¼ cup of nonnanoparticle zinc oxide, 7 drops of lavender oil and 7 drops of chamomile oil. Gradually combine ingredients on a low heat to make the balm. Once made, keep the balm refrigerated and apply between nappy changes after warming it up in your hands.

ALOE VERA Apply aloe vera gel from a tube, or straight from the leaves of the plant directly to your baby’s skin to calm inflammation.

46

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR Apple Cider Vinegar is an antibacterial solution which can be added to your babies bath (1 cup) or alternatively mix in a teaspoon full with half a cup of warm water, and use a cloth to gently dab the rash. Due to it’s acidic nature, it may sting a little if the rash is severe.

PORRIDGE OATS BATH An absolute classic - good old fashioned oats are a great answer to soothe baby’s skin. Simply wrap ½ a cup of oats in a cheesecloth so they don’t spill and then add them to a warm bath to sit your bub in.

WELEDA A world-leading manufacturer of holistic natural cosmetics, that protects and soothes the delicate skin of the nappy area using only the goodness of nature.

17 / GENDER NEUTRAL CLOTHING

Baby Clothing KEEPSAKE CLOTHING TO PASS ON The gender neutral fashion movement aims to create garments that every child can enjoy regardless of their gender, and rejects the idea that pink is for girls and blue is for boys—and that girls should be delicate while boys should be rugged. Kids can just be kids and get down to the business of play! The goal behind gender neutral clothing (and toys) is to free children from social expectations based on their gender. We often aren’t even aware of how our current cultural norms and definitions around gender are subtly programmed into the minds of our children. Choosing a gender neutral wardrobe for your little ones is a huge win-win for kids, parents, and the planet itself in all these wonderful ways:

50

□ Breaks imposed stereotypes

□ Freeing lifestyle

□ Budget friendly

□ Promotes self-expression

□ Kinder to the planet

□ Minimalist wardrobe

□ Encourages sharing

□ Simple and natural
