COVER - THE CHASE TOURNAMENT

Watch Recap Video Day 1

A MESSAGE FROM

Bo Willis Golf Chairman Greetings, Fellow Golfers! First of all, I would like to again commend superintendent Wayne Mills on the reclaimed water project. Wayne managed the process in a way that caused very minimal disruption to member play, and completed the project ahead of schedule. The net result is that the Club will save a fortune on water going forward. The project also included the new tee boxes on #11 and #12, which debuted during The Chase and were a major hit with players. Speaking of The Chase… The Chase member/guest was contested on September 24th-26th. A full field of 120 players enjoyed some great competition, albeit under mostly smoky and overcast skies (not ideal for showing off our beautiful Santa Barbara weather to out-of-towners). After five rounds of head-to-head competition, there were ten flight winners: Drew Ferris/Mike Radek, Howard Gross/David Drucker, defending champs Tom Pickett/Ben Mascari, Justin Egerer/Andy Fitzgerald, Mike Westmacott/J.R. Tricase, Aaron Gilles/Clark Lammers, Mike Paschke/Dave Pintard, Chris Hayden/Bob Smith, Dave Zubas/Larry Guy, and Tim Johnson/Jim Carberry.

The flight winners then duke it out in an alternate shot horse race to determine the overall winner, with the team of Hayden/Smith edging out the teams of Paschke/Pintard and Zubas/Guy on the final hole to claim the title. Congratulations, Chris and Bob!! The food offerings were off the charts for the entire weekend. The Cold Springs style tri-tip sandwiches served on course on Friday and the beef tenderloin at the Saturday night poolside dinner were highlights. The Saturday evening performance by golf entertainer Dan Boever was also a big hit, especially seeing the courageous Doug Fell out front in his protective goggles and athletic supporter! Many thanks go out to my tournament Co-Chair Glenn Carter, not just for this year but also for the previous few years. This tournament would not be where it is now without your hard work and commitment to improvement. The 2018 tournament chairman, Paul Portney, should also be included in that conversation. Eternal thanks also to Evan, Wayne Mills, GM Eric, Chef Eric, Food & Beverage Manager Josh, and all of their staffs for helping to put La Cumbre’s best foot forward. Your work allowed all of the member participants to proudly show off our club to the guests, and in the opinion of many, this was the best Chase tournament to date. And one final special shout-out goes to Communications Director Brooke Atkins. Brooke worked behind the scenes on email communications, the tournament program, as well as coordinating photographers/videographers and drones to capture the memories. Thanks, Brooke!

Watch Recap Video Day 3

Watch Recap Video Day 2

In other golf news, the Men’s Hole-in-One Stag Day took place on September 29th, and the format was a 4-person scramble. A full field took on the freshly punched and sanded greens, and when the dust settled, one team stood above the rest: Tom Parrish, Jeff Ris, Nick Hartley, and Paul Menzel. Right on their tail were the team of Chad Gunn, Tom Orlando, Dennis Friederich, and Milt Melter, as well as the team of Mark Da Re, Gunther Bumgartner, Dan McGuire, and Bob Olson. Closest to the pins were won by Drew Simons on #5, Ken Ziegler on #7, Marty Lynch on #11, and Chad Gunn on #17. Congrats to all of the winners! And finally, the Men’s Club Championship will be contested on October 21st-24th. Sign-up is available online. MONTHLY REMINDERS: 1. Please remember that there are others playing behind you. Fill in your divots with sand, correctly rake the bunkers, and make sure to leave a smooth playing surface in the bunkers. Rakes should be placed in bunkers with teeth down and handle resting on the lower lip of the bunker. 2. It is everyone’s responsibility to fix their own ball marks on the greens. And while you’re at it, fix a few more. 3. The blue line around Laguna Blanca still applies for members and their guests. The lake is an off-limits penalty area, and you may NOT play out of it. As always, your feedback on anything golf-related is appreciated and encouraged. Feel free to email me directly with any suggestions or concerns at bowillis1@gmail.com. Bo Willis

BOARD CORNER

AN UPDATE FROM

Tom Carey

Master Plan Committee Chair I would like to share some of the history that led to the proposed clubhouse renovation project. Over the last four years, several committees have been working on a plan to evaluate the uses and functions within and around the clubhouse: 1. In 2018 the long-range planning committee (LRPC) established a master plan subcommittee (MPC) which: a. Reviewed a 2007 useful life study. b. Reviewed a 2014 Member Experience Research Summary. c. Met with our general manager and senior staff to evaluate the needs for functions and the spaces required to accommodate those functions. 2. In 2019 the Board of Directors completed a strategic plan retreat: a. The strategic planning process used was a SWOT (strength, weakness, opportunity, and threats) analysis which focused on the clubhouse and its facilities. 3. In 2020 the master planning process was overshadowed by Covid. However, a master planning committee (MPC) was formed to evaluate the parking lot and front building entry after we lost the eucalyptus tree and planter the MPC also: a. Selected consultants to develop a planning process and preliminary plans. b. Developed a plan for the evaluation of the interior of the clubhouse. 4. In 2021 the LRPC was restructured and split into a strategic planning committee (SPC) and a master planning committee (MPC). a. The SPC held 10 zoom focus group meetings, with various segments of our membership. b. The focus groups identified several areas of concern with the uses and functions in the clubhouse. c. The concerns were shared with the MPC and incorporated into an analysis by our consultants. 5. As a result of all the input from the above-mentioned committees, a preliminary plan for the club was completed by the consultants. The preliminary plan for the clubhouse has been reviewed by: The 2021 Board of Directors All members of the above referenced committees All standing board committee members The Past President’s group Participants from several town hall meetings The Women’s Golf Association Numerous individuals who have been involved in past clubhouse projects

Lounge and Bar area

6. There will be continued town hall meetings for additional review of the preliminary plans as this process continues. I would like to thank the existing MPC for all their hard work: Ron Busch, Karen Warshaw, Jess Parker, Elaine Laustsen, Earl Armstrong, and Peter Hagan. The committee has spent many hours with our consultants Anacapa Architects, Cabana Homes, Laurel Perez from Suzanne Elledge Permit Processing, and the Post/Hazeltine Associates, our architectural historians.

1 Phase One - Entry and living room Preliminary estimate $1 to $1.5 Mil

Our team has developed a Master Plan process that mirrors many successful clubhouse renovations. We are continuing to refine the preliminary plans and that will lead to a successful clubhouse renovation. The concept developed to date is to provide flexibility so small projects can be completed consistent with the Master Plan. This allows improvements to be made that will not have to be redone when later project phases move forward. The Phasing process for the Master Plan will include the evaluation of exterior elements such as the parking lot, main entry, with a major emphasis on the function and use of interior spaces. A scope of work is currently being evaluated on three separate phases within the existing preliminary plan (see plan above). The entry living room area is Phase One, the Lounge bar and Pacific Grill area is Phase Two, and the Terrace exterior dining area is Phase Three. The phasing process will also determine the need for construction documents, building individual budgets for each phase, and work schedules. It is the MPC’s job to evaluate budgets for multiple scopes of work. For anyone who has ever done a construction project, this is a very difficult proposition. We have evaluated costs all through this process. Based on our preliminary plans, a very preliminary cost estimate has been established. As we develop the scopes of work and construction plans, the cost estimates will be refined and updated. As part of the illustration above, I have listed a range of preliminary costs, which include interior finishes, furnishings, and construction for each of the three phases shown below. It is important to recognize that the process to develop a master plan and complete the type of projects proposed for a George Washington Smith 1927 Clubhouse can take many years to complete. One of the most important elements in this process is consistency and leadership. Eric VanderWerff, our general manager, has been a constant contributor to this master plan. His leadership and effort to improve our club will be paramount for the successful completion of this clubhouse renovation project. Tom Carey Master Plan Committee Chair

WGA UPDATES

An Update From Chris Portney

Fall Season Updates all is a gorgeous time of the year in Santa Barbara, and it is F especially so at La Cumbre. The activities of the Women’s Golf Association (WGA) — 145 members strong — are in full swing. We are lucky to have a wonderful ladies’ Board running things smoothly for us, assisted by others who oversee one-day tournaments, a 2-month Ringer tournament, and a few multi-day tournaments. Our Board consists of Vice-Chair Elaine Laustsen, Secretary Roberta Collier, Treasurer Gaile Haslem, and Handicap Chair, Sue Wilcox. We are fortunate to play every Tuesday morning at 8:30am, and we average 34 ladies weekly right now. We are always happy to have new women join us, so please don’t be shy! We do our best to mix up the Tuesday games by playing different tees, various fun games, and occasional mixers where the Pro Shop makes up our foursomes. One popular feature of our league is the monthly Guest Day, always held on the first Thursday of the month. They are always great fun and might incorporate a holiday or seasonal theme. There are two special guest days each year: Spring Fling in April and the Holiday Guest Day in December. The decorations and menu are beautifully coordinated and always elicit oohs and aahhs. Our “Majors,” if you will, include the Club Championship (3 days in March), the Member-Guest (two days during the first week in August), the Better Ball of Partners held in late August and the President’s Partners Cup over 3 days in October. As it is obvious from the names, the latter three are done with a partner, which greatly reduces any pressure! Alternatively, if a one-day tournament is more to your liking, we have several good options. There are seasonal Mixers as mentioned earlier, and the Solheim Cup in September where WGA members are matched up by handicap and the US team plays the Euro team. The Senior Ladies’ Club Championship is a great event held in November and followed later that month by the Turkey Shoot, which celebrates all things autumn. If you like friendly competition, we offer team play in the spring months and then again in the summer. Whether you sign up to play a single match or all of them, our team captains will organize the rest for you. No matter the outcome, we always enjoy a good lunch when we’re done! Thirteen new women have joined the WGA so far this year, but there is always room for more! If you’d be interested in joining, please reach out to any of us in the WGA — we love new members and new ideas, and we’d love to welcome you! Chris Portney WGA Chair

NINE REASONS TO PLAY NINE HOLES WITH THE NINERS IN THE BACK NINE 1. The Pro Shop has designated Friday play for Niners between 8:00am and 8:30am. It’s our time. 2. You can sign up online as a single or create your own threesome or foursome. We are a flexible group. 3. You can walk the course or take a cart if you prefer. Whatever works for you. 4. Our Niner play is for all skill levels. No Stress! 5. Your play can be a little more relaxed or your foursome may want to have a more competitive game. It’s your choice! 6. You can bring a guest on the second Friday of the month and the green fees for the 9 holes will be waived. Best deal in town! 7. On the last Friday of the month you have an opportunity to play with someone you’ve never played with before. That’s when we have our Mixer Scramble. We have a random card draw to determine the foursomes. You might just meet a new friend. 8. We are a very social group. When you finish your 9 holes, meet at the snack bar for coffee and conversation with the other players. It’s simply the best! 9. Your 9 holes can normally be played in less than 2 hours giving you the rest of the day to do whatever you want! It really doesn’t get much better than that, ladies. Hope to see you Niners on Friday mornings on our beautiful course! Happy Golfing, Linda G.

A Wonderful Send-Off On August 31st a great many members gathered at the LCCC tennis courts to launch John and Kirsten Kinsella on their path to retirement. Both John and Kirsten were properly feted, and appreciation for their 48 years of service was in abundance. General Manager, Eric VanderWerff kicked off the program with a bronze plaque tribute, which will be displayed at the tennis facility, as well as a lifetime social tennis membership to La Cumbre. Paul Kuhn spoke with humor of his long relationship with John. Don Logan, sporting some old tennis gear, congratulated John for his leadership. Polly Bloomingdale gave a stirring speech followed by a wine tribute from Ashley Parker-Snyder. The A and A2 teams gifted the Kinsellas with flowers and a basket chock full of goodies. Jerry Hatchett, John’s good friend, spoke of John’s impact on the tennis community, particularly junior tennis. Lastly, Katie and Amy Kinsella presented their parents with a photo and sentiment book containing over 100 letters from members. John closed with some stirring words, and introduced Matt Berry, the new Director of Tennis.

LET'S GIVE A WARM WELCOME TO THE NEW MEMBERS OF LCCC FAMILY

A Note from The Kinsellas Dear Mr. V and the Board of Directors, I couldn’t let today pass without thanking you for the gift of a honorary membership to La Cumbre Country Club. Last night was magical. A night we will never forget. So many members from so many generations approached us with unique stories of their tennis impressions and impacts that were made here at the courts. We always knew this was a special place. Going to work each day just felt like going to our other home.

It was an evening of great food, positive vibes, sweet sentiments, fun entertainment and well deserved admiration to two truly wonderful individuals. Happy days ahead, John and Kirsten!

Our daughters surprised us yesterday. Having Katie and Amy share the best day of our lives was priceless. We are so grateful they got to witness the LOVE that their parents worked hard at nurturing at La Cumbre. Katie’s speech said it all. I would call that the reason we have loved working at La Cumbre for so long. It’s the love we feel when we walk into work each day. Thank you for letting us continue the work to maintain the friendships here at the club. Love,

Annetta Patrick

5 STRETCHES TO IMPROVE YOUR SWING 1. Twisting Stretch Start with your legs wider than your hips. Rest your right hand on your lower back palm facing away from you. Inhale. With an exhale, bend the right knee and reach your left hand outside your right foot. With an exhale, lift your torso up and switch your hands, placing your left hand on your lower back. Twist toward the left reaching your right hand around the corner. Follow your hand with your gaze to exaggerate the twist. Repeat six times and switch sides.

2. Hip Press Tight hamstrings tend to put a lot of pressure on your lower back. This stretch will loosen up the hips and hamstrings — releasing this pressure, alleviating back pain and increasing the range of motion in your legs. Step your right foot forward in a short lunge position with both heels on the ground. Place your hands on your hips or hold onto your golf club with one hand to help with balance. Tuck your pelvis in. Engage your left glute and feel the stretch in your left hip flexor and quad. Inhale. With an exhale, bend your back leg and extend your front leg into a hamstring stretch. Lower your torso while keeping the back straight. Think of arching your lower back to intensify the stretch. With an inhale return to your lunge and repeat. Continue this action six times, breathing through it.

3. Scarecrow Twists Start with your feet slightly wider than your shoulders. Place your golf club behind your neck and onto your shoulders with both arms over the golf club in a scarecrow position. Bend your knees slightly and inhale. With an exhale, twist to the right, pivoting in the left foot. Look around the corner to intensify the stretch. With an inhale, return to center. Repeat on the other side. Continue this twisting action six times on each side, breathing through it.

4. Standing Side Stretch Standing up straight, plant your golf club into the ground with your right hand. Cross your left leg over the right and reach your left arm up and over toward the club. Then, open your chest and look at the sky. Allow your hips to go slightly to the left and feel the stretch in the left side of your body. Use your club as a balance point. Hold here for 3-5 breaths and switch sides.

5. Shoulder Flossing Stand with your feet hip-width apart and grab your golf club with each hand. Lift the golf club over your head. With an inhale, begin to floss it behind you until it becomes parallel to the ground. With an exhale, return to your original position. If you want to intensify the stretch, inch your hands closed together; to simplify the stretch, move the hands wider apart. Repeat 6 to 8 times, breathing through it.
