BOARD'S CORNER

A MESSAGE FROM

Russell Werner LCCC President

All La Cumbre Country Club members can agree that we wish for a calm 2022. A return to our normal rituals, traditions, and routines that weave the fabric of our social lives at La Cumbre. In January, just one year ago, Bob Lowes’ first President’s Letter focused on Covid restrictions: the Clubhouse closed (only meals-to-go), limited access to the fitness and pool facilities, no guests for golf or tennis, etc. And a lot of uncertainty about what was to come. Things are certainly a whole lot better now. Members have come out of their pods and caves in force to participate with their fellow Club members and guests in a once-again packed social and activities calendar. Our members’ voluntary participation in getting vaccinated has been critical to our Club getting back on track. Let’s stay vigilant. Covid Booster shots can go a long way to limiting the effects of emerging strains of the Coronavirus, such as the rapidly spreading Omicron variant. There is a chance the pandemic will become endemic in 2022, like influenza - a manageable health problem. Let’s remain optimistic, and hopefully soon, no more masks. In the past six months, there have been some limitations and inconsistency in service due to some staff turnover, notably the retirement of John Kinsella and some food staff not returning from Covid. We now have a good level of permanent staffing in all areas of the Club but we are experiencing some Omicron absences in our temporary food staff. Lot of new faces, but we have some terrific people on board. Be sure to make our new staff feel welcome at La Cumbre.

Join me in thanking our Board and Committee members for their willingness to give their time to our Club. This year’s Board: new members Ron Busch (House); Jim Buttimer (Membership); and Henning Thorsen (Finance; Board Treasurer) as well as returning Board members Rod Brown; Greg Moss (Green); Wendi Hunter; Annetta Patrick (Pool, Tennis, and Fitness; Board Secretary); Bo Willis (Golf; Board Vice President) and Steve Pinsker (Board Advisor). Past President Bob Lowes will chair the Long-Range Planning Committee. We are fortunate to have such an outstanding Board. Also, join me in appreciation of Bob Lowes for his leadership in 2021. The Club is in probably the best condition it has ever been in at yearend. Bravo, Bob. I look forward to working with our GM, Eric VanderWerff, and his talented staff. Please let Eric know how much you appreciate his efforts navigating the Club through the past two years of constant adjustments and uncertainty due to Coronavirus. La Cumbre has clearly emerged from its roots as a local gem- now well known to those who move here from other parts of California or the country. The waitlists in all categories of membership and prices for equity memberships at record highs underscore that we are without doubt the Club of choice in Santa Barbara. I am honored to serve as President of La Cumbre Country Club and excited to see you all out enjoying our Club next year. Here’s to a calm but fun 2022. Russell S. Werner President

A MESSAGE FROM

Eric VanderWerff LCCC General Manager

Dear La Cumbre Members, As we navigate into the new year, let us not be remiss to reflect on the ongoing challenges we face, but all of the blessings life grants us. We are facing our second year of life with Covid, but it has become more manageable with immunizations and boosters. During this time, one place that was a welcome respite from the outside world has been the Club, a home away from home. This past year, we have done everything in our power to make members feel safe while on these grounds. We continue to offer all of our amenities to members, including take-out service, the bottle shop, and more. Please take the time to review the upcoming 2022 Rules Book and look for updates to each department, fee changes, and modifications to each member category. The information in this book is essential, keeps our Club running efficiently and puts us ahead of the competitive clubs in our region. If you have any questions about anything in this book, please reach out to me or our communications director, Brooke Boccali, at communications@lacumbrecc.org. See you around the Club! Eric VanderWerff, GM, CCM

A Message From Nancy Falberg

WGA Updates Communications Chair

The WGA is nearing the end of a very successful "come-back" year of activities guided by Chair, Chris Portney, and her Board and Tournament Chairs who all worked hard to bring back the golfing fun and camaraderie after the Covid year. By mid-year, we were back to great participation in all our events. We welcomed a record number of 13 new WGA members! The latest new member is Nancy Rosenthal. Her contact information is on the accompanying list of new members. We celebrated six Holes-in One, the latest by Linda Bialla, one of our new members. We congratulated monthly Ace Day winners. Bev Mester is our December Ace with a net score of 68. Congratulations, Bev! Sally Smith is our 2021 Putting Queen with 27 putts. Congratultions, Sally. It was a good year, and next year will be even better!

Thank You!

WGA Members donated $10,000, with donations continuing to arrive, to the Ridley Tree Cancer Center during the annual WGA Holiday Mixer. Thanks to Karen Warshaw and Maggy McDermott for chairing this event.

Hole in One Alert!

Congratulations to Linda Bialla who had her first hole in one at La Cumbre on December 7, Linda used her three wood for a perfect 141-yard shot from the gold tee box on hole #11. AN UPDATE FROM

Wayne’s World Our very own Wayne Mills has been featured in the December 2021 issue of Golf Digest Magazine, discussing the topics of wildlife preservation and water conservation. Read the excerpt below and the article here. [...] Some of these changes are brought on by passion or ethos—from supers, board members or players—and others are dictated by nature. Such is the case in droughtstricken California. Wayne Mills manages La Cumbre Country Club in Santa Barbara, where cutting down on water is not only the right thing to do but is state-mandated. When Mills got started in 2016, he was looking to take advantage of incentives the government was offering to properties that reduced water usage. Mills’ first thought was increasing the course’s native populations, which are predisposed to fare better in the arid climate and retain water more efficiently. One day, some college researchers were studying a creek nearby. He asked them to come take a look around the grounds. “I realized I needed some help,” he says. They introduced him to a local biologist, who, with her husband, specializes in mitigation. Together, they decided to restore the native oak communities using the surrounding hills as a guide. To do this, they hiked the nearby mountains to propagate the exact genetic varieties local to Santa Barbara. Mills still plants some non-native species for the “show factor.” Members have affectionately nicknamed the annual crescendo of red flax, purple lupines and white sage the “super bloom.” Mills orchestrates the plantings to flower at different times, attracting pollinators from hummingbirds to sweat bees and mimicking the drama of changing seasons, a rarity in the Golden State. Mills describes it as a “snowball effect.” If you give a course a flowering garden, you’ll end up with aphids seeking nectar. Then the birds arrive to munch on the insects. Mills and his team are converting another 30,000 square feet to meadow. It’s the last of the “easy pickings.” After that, they will chase another creative, water-cutting, wildlife-friendly solution—still to be discovered. If you have the opportunity, congratulate Wayne for a job well done! Thank you Wayne!

TENNIS

UPDATES

From the Court

Happy holidays to you all! We hope everyone can celebrate with their loved ones and enjoy the final days of 2021. The tennis staff is so thankful to have spent the last few months getting to know the club and its wonderful members. We are excited to continue the momentum in 2022! On the live ball front, we had a wonderful Christmas live ball event with a special appearance from Santa. The ladies showed off their tennis skills and enjoyed plenty of homemade cookies in this fun and festive event. We had another successful pickleball mixer. It's been great seeing these events rise in popularity and new players come out. Yet again, we had a large turnout, hoping to continue the success and popularity in the new year—huge congrats to the winners, Danielle McCaffery and Jeff Madsen. For members who would like to learn to play pickleball for the first time, we introduce a beginner-level clinic every Thursday at 1:30 pm. We have all the equipment, paddles, and balls ready. Just come out and learn to play the fastest-growing sport in America. Exciting news on the Junior Tennis side, Matthew Chung won the Santa Barbara open level 6! It is a huge win for the San Marcos Junior and we hope to see more tournament wins for him representing our club! We are also so excited to have two teams, ladies A2 and men's Phoenix's leading their respective leagues at the halfway point of the season. Updated clinics, events, and mixers are coming in 2022. The first item on the schedule is the January Pickleball Mixer on the 23rd. Keep your eyes out for details! Wishing you all a healthy and safe new year!

Upcoming events Pickleball Mixer Sunday 23rd January Join us for a 90-min pickleball shootout. Players of all ages and levels are encouraged to sign-up. We have 20 spots available. Time: Sunday 2pm-4pm | Where: Courts 4 & 5 & 6 Cost: $20 | RSVP: mberry@lacumbrecc.org

Tennis Tip The Kinetic chain."The use of the legs to engage the swing is one of the biggest differences we see between intermediate and advanced players. Next time you are out on the courts, forget about your arm and try to bring awareness to your legs. As you unload the tension in your legs and torso, let the arm take itself along for the ride. Using one's large muscle groups is key to using less energy and maintaining a smooth stroke under pressure."

SCORECARD The A team split their only match of the month with a tight 2/2 match. We had two strong performances from the doubles teams of Karen Suzuki/Sharon Goldberg and Sue Beckett/Susan Vasquez. Both teams were able to win in straight sets. Captain's Quote: "We are having a blast! Halfway through the season, the A Division, with five teams, is in a tight battle, with only 3 points between 1st and 5th place. La Cumbre is in the middle, and we have high hopes for a strong finish!" Angie Huff Leading the way in the first position are our A2 ladies. We dominated both matches this month against Elings and Santa Barbara Tennis Club. The teams of Kelly Jensen/Danielle McCaffrey, Nanette Giordano/Kerry/Gidney, and Dawn Bokman/Cynthia Frohling were successful against SB Tennis Club. Kathleen McLychok/Dawn Bokman, Nanette Giordano/Kerry Gidney, Bess Scribner/Kelly Jensen, and Donna Econn/Danielle McCaffrey swept the A2 ladies from Elings. Captains quote: "We are currently tied for first place in the league and feel strongly that we are moving in the right direction for 2022," Co-captain, Bess Scribner Our B team continues to show progress in a very competitive league. Unfortunately, we lost to Alissa 1-3. The win16 came from the team at line 4 of Lauren Brennan and Carey Zimmerman. Captains Quote: "The B team is excited to be back on the courts, and we are enjoying our time seeing familiar faces through Inter-club matches. We are thrilled to be putting the invaluable skills we have gained from our new pros to work. We can't wait to finish off the season stronger than we started." Sheri Copus Our C team had the month off from matches and have been hard on the practice courts, more motivated than ever to catch league leaders Alisal. Captains Quote: "The C Team is focusing on moving from third place to first as we start the second half of the season. Lauren Brennan is our outstanding player with six wins and no losses!" Cristina Pritchard The LC's phoenix's men have been unstoppable since their first match of the season. This time they took down the undefeated Cathedral Oaks men. Sweeping all three teams were the dynamic John Long and Gary Klass. Doubles teams of Cliff Wyatt/Pat McAllister and John Rasmussen/Mac McGinnes won 2 of their three matches. The win propelled them past Cathedral Oaks and into first. Captains Quote: "We have an incredible depth of talent on the team this year, with any line being capable of beating and playing any other line. Our biggest challenge is just getting enough teammates to sign up. When we do sign up in good numbers, La Cumbre is very difficult to beat!" Cliff Wyatt

FITNESS & HEALTH

8 Resolutions to Jump-Start 2022 & Keep You on Track For Better Health All Year With a new year comes the opportunity for a fresh start, and the areas of exercise and wellness are no exception. The new year is a great time to commit to a healthier lifestyle, and that doesn't have to mean resigning yourself to time in a crowded gym with tons of other well-meaning people. Here are eight attainable fitness resolutions you can easily make time for, no matter what your lifestyle is currently like.

Hold a Plank

Eat More Fruit Eating more fruit is always less daunting than committing to eating more vegetables. Fruit can more easily replace refined sugar when cravings hit, so start stocking up your fridge and getting your blender ready.

If you've been longing for a stronger core, planks are the way to go. With consistency, you can build up to a 90- to 120-second plank, and visible abs will be yours in no time.

Train For a 5K No matter how fast or slow you might be, anyone can take up running; you just have to give it time. Even if you're new to running, this is a realistic goal to go after with a beginner-friendly, run-walk approach like Couch to 5K.

Drink More Water There are so many reasons to kick your soda habit and start drinking more water. In addition to staying well-hydrated, drinking up to eight glasses of water a day will help you get clearer skin, feel more energized, and lose weight. Start by simply bringing a refillable bottle to keep at work, and opt for water when dining out.

Walk More Walking is excellent exercise that tends to be overlooked until you're doing more of it. Whether it's by taking your dog out for longer regular walks or walking to the store that's just a few blocks away instead of driving, every bit counts.

Try That Fitness Class You've Been Eyeing Whether it's Orangetheory, SoulCycle, or just a local yoga class, commit to finally trying it at least once. As an added bonus, some gyms and studios let you try your first session for free.

Get More Sleep Always easier said than done, but the benefits of committing to getting better sleep, from having more energy to boosting your immunity, are endless. Take steps to get to bed earlier at night, from winding down with yoga to banishing electronics from your bedroom.

Start Working Out in the Morning Everyone knows evening workouts are much easier to bail on, especially if it's dark out or if something more appealing, like happy hour, pops up. By getting up in time to work out with the morning sunrise, you'll set the stage for a successful day and can enjoy evening social commitments guilt-free.
