Director’s Note No one ever TRULY knows what goes on in a relationship behind closed doors, including those who are IN the relationship. We like to think that the person we’re with is OUR person, the one who knows us best, and vice versa. But the truth is a little more complicated, and a lot more uncomfortable.

Think about it: how often does a break up or divorce catch one partner completely by surprise? “Things are fine,” they think. “Sure, it’s not perfect, but nothing ever is, right?” And without warning they're left behind.

Discarded. Not good enough. Lost. They’re left wondering what went wrong, replaying the relationship over and over in their mind. What could they have done differently? How could they have missed the signs?

The truth is every relationship, romantic or otherwise, exists in three realities. The first is the shared experience between the two: the known, the spoken. And then there’s the relationship that exists in the mind of each partner. Their private thoughts and feelings. The things that they don’t share with the other: secret hopes, dreams, fears, and frustrations. When the private reality becomes more immediate and real, the shared reality is fractured.

Jason Robert Brown invites us to view a relationship through three such perspectives: the shared life, and the private lives of Jamie and Cathy. And through dueling timelines, we experience the entire lifespan of the relationship from beginning to end as we simultaneously look back and wonder what went wrong.

And what went wrong? That depends on who you ask.

A Note from the Executive Director I am thrilled to share with you the tremendous dedication and hard work that our talented team has poured into bringing this production to life. From the creative minds behind the scenes to the exceptional performers gracing our stage, every individual involved has invested countless hours to ensure an unforgettable experience for our cherished audience.

A very big thanks goes to Greg Parmeter for directing this work. Even though he was the Artistic Director at La Crosse Community Theatre for many years, I just recently learned from him that this is only his second time directing in the Veterans' Studio Theatre.

This intimate space is often the perfect canvas for capturing the nuances of a performance, and The Last Five Years thrives in such an environment. The close proximity creates a unique connection between the audience and the performer, making the emotional journey of the characters even more palpable. The small space also allows the modern and exciting music to resonate intimately with each and every one of you, while Lex Violette's wonderfully simple, but elegant set design catches the eye.

A unique artist choice we made with this production is double casting the two roles. The cast matchup changes with each performance, allowing the chemistry and energy on stage to transform, providing a fresh and engaging experience for every show. It's a testament to the versatility of our talented actors and their ability to bring new perspectives to the narrative.

Audience Services PURCHASING TICKETS • The box office is open from 3 pm until 5 pm Monday through Friday and for one hour prior to each performance.

• The box office accepts cash, checks, and credit/debit cards.

• Single tickets become available for purchase 60 days before a production’s opening night.

NEED TO EXCHANGE YOUR TICKETS? Any ticket exchanges must be done through the box office in person or over the phone.

Tickets may only be exchanged for another performance of the same show.

UNABLE TO USE YOUR TICKETS? Please contact the box office to see if an exchange for a different date can be made.

On rare occasions, LCT has allowed a ticket for one production to be used at a different production. If no exchanges can be made, the ticket price may be written off as a donation tax credit.

CAMERAS AND/OR RECORDING EQUIPMENT The use of cameras and/or recording equipment is strictly prohibited in the theatre.

If you need to answer a call, please do so in the lobby so as to not disrupt the performance.

GREETING THE ARTISTS Flowers may be left in the box office for the stage manager to deliver or you may hand them to the cast member once they are in the lobby at the conclusion of the performance. Audience members are not allowed backstage.

BAD WEATHER POLICY If you have concerns about the weather facing an upcoming performance, please call the box office to double check that the performance will still continue. On rare occasions, LCT has canceled performances due to bad weather or cast conditions. If this occurs, exchanges or refunds will be issued.

BABIES AND SMALL CHILDREN Every individual, no matter the age, must have a ticket in order to attend the performance. If you would like to bring your children, please purchase seats for them even if they will be seated on someone’s lap.

SEAT RESERVATIONS Reservations for the general public begin at least 60 days before the opening of each show; season ticket reservations open the week prior. Patron donors may reserve their seats at any time. Please call the box office at 608-784-9292 if you have any questions.

LATE SEATING POLICY Late arrivals will be seated at the house manager’s discretion during an appropriate point in the performance. If you arrive more than 15 minutes after the show begins, we reserve the right to release your seat(s) to someone else.

What Is A Hearing Loop?

Hearing Loops allow people who wear hearing aids to directly receive the sound from the theatre’s sound system in their own hearing aids, much like Wi-Fi for laptops. If you wear hearing instruments, and they have a wireless receiver called a T-coil or Telecoil built-in, you will benefit from the hearing loop in our theatre. The T-coil program is accessed by pushing a button on your hearing aid. This T-coil setting has to be activated before use. Please consult your audiologist to ensure your t-coils are properly adjusted.

If you do not have a T-coil equipped hearing instrument, please feel free to stop by the box office to pick up a hearing assist device.

The Company MACKINLEY BRUEMMER (Jamie) was was last seen on the LCT stage as Motel in Fiddler on the Roof, Callahan in Legally Blonde, the Beast in Beauty and the Beast, and Dan in Next to Normal. Professional roles include Jervis Pendelton in Daddy Long Legs, Caleb in The Spitfire Grill, and Robert in Boeing Boeing with the Northern Fort Playhouse; as well as a cast member with Storybook Land Theatre in Aberdeen SD.

ZOE DE BOER (Cathy) is so excited to be starring in one of her dream roles with this show! Her favorite theatre experience ever was when she was seen as Sophie in Mamma Mia on the LCT stage. She is currently in her wedding-planning era, her devoted cat mother era, her podcasting era (Hello Good Humans available wherever you stream your podcasts), and her youth pastor era. She would like to credit Ariana Grande as being her biggest vocal inspiration & her fiancé and kitties for being her biggest fans!

MARY BLAHA-DEBOER (Music Director) is an Admin.

Assistant at Hintgen Elementary and Director of Music & Liturgy for Roncalli Newman and Blessed Sacrament parishes. She has thoroughly enjoyed working with Zoe, Maya, Josh, and Mac. It has been a pleasure to watch them discover and grow in their characters with Greg's guidance.

The Company JOSHUA TERRONES (Jamie) I'd like to dedicate this production to my ex boyfriends for teaching me what love is, and how I should be better at it. This show isn't just about a relationship between two flawed people; it is about how our relationship with ourselves and its influence on our communication skills. MAYA DOUGHERTY-HARRIS (Cathy) has been performing for La Crosse Community Theatre since 2006 when she made her debut as a dalmatian in Disney's 101 Dalmatians. Other notable roles on the Lyche Theatre stage include Snoopy in A Charlie Brown Christmas and Vivienne in Legally Blonde.

When she's not on stage, she's watching Dimension 20 or hanging out with her dog Osha. Maya wants to express her heartfelt gratitude to her family, friends, co-workers and the incredible production team and cast working on this project.

GREG PARMETER (Director) teaches voice, movement, and performance at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse. Before joining the faculty of UWL, Greg spent nine years as the Artistic Director at La Crosse Community Theatre where he directed the regional premiers of Les Misérables and Mary Poppins as well as the first ever community theatre production of Billy Elliot the Musical. His work at UWL includes award winning productions of The Laramie Project, The Country Wife, Murder on the Orient Express, and Fuddy Meers. He also directed and co-wrote UWL's national awardwinning original production Severe Clear: September 11 from Memory to History. He is honored to be welcomed back to LCT with open arms and thanks all of you for being here, for being a part of La Crosse Community Theatre, and making the arts possible in our community. p. 15

The Company MEGAN PENCE (Stage Manager) is so exited to have experienced her first show in the Veterans Studio Theatre here at LCT. She was last in the SM booth for The Diary of Anne Frank in the Lyche Theatre. When not Stage Managing, she has a new hobby of watching football-rooting for the Packers! She also spends time crafting and counting down the days until Oktoberfest . Thank you to my family and friends who have supported me along the way.

LEX VIOLETTE (Set Designer/Technical Director) is currently the Technical Director at LCT. She feels incredibly grateful for the opportunity to present her work and takes great pride in the final results of each show. She has had a great time working on The Last Five Years with the cast members and production team. KRISSA VALENTINE-HARNISH (Props Designer) is a freelance artist and photographer who has appeared onstage and offstage in many local theatre productions.

Most recently, she directed Appleseed Community Theatre’s production of Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus and Peter Pan JR. She lives in La Crosse. In her free time, she loves to adventure out cross-country rock hunting.
