A Note from our Executive Director

There are certain shows in the American musical theatre canon that don’t just entertain—they challenge us, reveal us, and ask us to take a closer look at what drives us. Gypsy: A Musical Fable is one of those shows.

At its heart, Gypsy is a story about ambition, resilience, and the complicated relationships that shape us. Mama Rose is often described as one of the greatest roles ever written—and for good reason. She is fierce, relentless, and unapologetically driven. But beneath that drive is something deeply human: a desire to matter, to be seen, and to create a better future for the people she loves… even when the path she chooses is imperfect.

That tension—between love and ambition, between sacrifice and selfinterest—is what makes this story endure. It asks us to consider where we draw those lines in our own lives, and how far we are willing to go in pursuit of our dreams.

At La Crosse Community Theatre, stories like this are at the core of our mission. We believe theatre is more than entertainment—it’s a way to bring our community together, to spark conversation, and to reflect the many dimensions of the human experience. Gypsy does all of that with humor, heart, and unforgettable music.

This production is also a celebration of the incredible talent within our community. From the cast you see on stage to the team working behind the scenes, this show represents countless hours of dedication, collaboration, and passion. I am continually inspired by the artists, volunteers, and staff who make moments like this possible. Thank you for being here, for supporting live theatre, and for being part of the La Crosse Community Theatre family. Whether this is your first show with us or one of many, we’re grateful to share this story with you.

Let us entertain you!

Director’s Note

One of the earliest memories I have is of sitting on my Grandma’s lap and hearing her spin tales of her time dancing on stage. She talked of people dancing as scissors, sewing needles, and a tape measure. Sounds strange I know, but I was always spellbound. She was talking of her time with a dance troupe on the Vaudeville Circuit.

The show they performed in was called “A Stitch in Time”, hence everyone appearing as pieces of a sewing kit. The other part of the story that captured my attention was when their novelty act (a professional armless golfer named Tommy McAuliffe). The story goes that Tommy would get the audience to tell him where he should hit the golf ball to. Then my grandmother would come out on stage and lay down on the ground. She would put a lifesaver on her forehead and the golf ball on top of that. Tommy would then hit the golf ball off her head into wherever the audience picked. WOW!!

That is my taste of Vaudeville. Tonight I hope to give you a brief glimpse into this world by having each scene appear as a skit on the Vaudeville stage. I also would like to give you a peek at what happens backstage. We don’t want to hide any of our scene changes. We want to show you a little bit of the magic.

I can only hope that it will give you a little bit of the love I feel every time I walk in the theatre. There is something so special about the smell of a theatre. I know that sounds strange. But that smell is a salve to my soul.

I would like to dedicate this evening to the woman who started it all for me. Sparking that imagination of everyday objects getting up a dancing. Elizabeth (Betty) Jane Behling (Eichfeld). Thank you for your love of movement and a good story.
