Artist Statement
The magic of clay as a material seems endless. I am always enchanted with the possibilities that clay as a material has to offer; hard clay, soft clay, sandy clay, recycle clay, the possibilities are endless. My challenge as an artist is to consider those possibilities and have that as the core of the making process. I consider all aspects of the making process as tools and dimensions; the material, the forming process, the kiln, are all tools at the artist’s disposal. I have chosen to use clay, slips, glazes, and firing in a somewhat non traditional way, starting recently I have become interested in combining techniques whether they be in the forming process, surface application, or firing. This keeps me curious and excited about experimenting with new approaches. This exhibition showcases these multi faceted approaches; highly textured clay, multiple firings of wood and electric, sagger firings have given me a whole new range of work possibilities. It feels like it is just the “tip of the iceberg” in terms of what is still possible.

Artist Bio
Jeff Shapiro, the internationally acclaimed ceramic artist, writer, philosopher, and educator, was born in the Bronx and presently lives and works in upstate NY. From 1973-1981 he lived in Japan and studied ceramic arts. His work has been exhibited in Germany, France, Italy, Australia, Canada, and Japan and is held in numerous museum collections, including Sevre Museum, Paris, France; Carlo Zauli Museum, Faenza, Italy; MFA, Boston, MA; Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, NY; Everson Museum, Syracuse, NY; and Fuller Craft Museum, Brockton, MA. Over the years Shapiro has given numerous workshops and seminars around the world and has built two wood fire kilns in Italy. He continues to exhibit internationally and maintains close ties to Japan.
