a Consolacion College of Daet Inc. (LCC-D) set its bar high on providing quality education as the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU) granted a Level II Re-Accreditation for its Basic Education Department (BED) Program which is valid until February 2025.

A team of eight PAASCU accreditors conducted an evaluation of the BED program of LCC-D in the areas of Curriculum and Instruction, Student Services, Faculty Laboratories/Facilities, Library and Audio Visual Center, School and Community last January 30-31,2020.

The team was composed of Ms. Myrna Abiog, Former Member PAASCU Commission on Secondary Education; As chairperson Dr. Ma. Corazon Reyes, Former Director for Basic Education from Miriam College; Ms. Jean Victoria Malenab, Officer of Student Discipline and Welfare of St. Joseph’s College of Quezon City; Ms. Rose Asoy, PAASCU Representative; Ms. Emma Alcantara, Senior High School Principal of Divine Word College of Legazpi; Ms. Maria Teresa San Jose, Former Science Area Coordinator of St. Theresa’s College, Quezon City; Ms. Aida Llerin, Head Librarian of St Mary’s College, Quezon City and Ms. Simonet Barrosa, BED Principal of Universidad

The school prepared for the visit through self-administered survey which was assigned into different areas and committees. The department had extensive preparations for the visit such as improving the facilities and being ready for the longer road of new experiences and learning. On the accreditation days, the administration, the faculty, staff and students, parents and alumni exhibited how a Level II accredited school should be.

The PAASCU team acknowledged the collaborative effort and spirit put into the self-survey, interview and classroom observations by the administrators, BED faculty and staff as well as their support of stakehold-

ers and their desire to grow along with the school’s and the commitment to high quality of education.

LCC-D is the only Level II accredited school in Camarines Norte. Being accredited Level II by the PAASCU is a very important accomplishment for the school but must also be consistently lived up to since the higher the accreditation level, the greater is the expectation to be a bulwark of excellence in all areas of the department.

Attaining such level of accreditation is a manifestation of the high standard of instruction and well-developed mechanism for curriculum upgrading in the LCC-D’s basic education program. It is also a

confirmation of the achievement and performance of students in both academic and co-curricular activities and the high level of competency of the teachers. It recognizes the capability of the school’s BED to promote effectiveness of teaching and learning.

PAASCU, a non-profit service organization, is one of the three founding members of the Federation of Accrediting Agencies of the Philippines (FAAP), which was established in 1977 and is authorized by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to certify the levels of accredited programs for the purpose of granting progressive deregulation and other benefits.

LCCD culminates Buwan ng Wika, a showcase of language and culture

T

he celebration of Buwan ng Wika with the theme “Wikang Katutubo: Tungo sa Isang Bansang Filipino” was conducted on August 30, 2019 in the afternoon at the quadrangle. Activities, such as the Parada ng Kasuotan, Awit Maramihan, and Katutubong Sayaw, were held to give importance in enriching the rich languages and culture of the Philippines.

During the Parada ng Kasuotan, the students from different levels showcased the uniqueness and variety of outfits with tribal designs and cultural significant patterns.

The students’ talent for music was showcased in the Awit Maramihan wherein students from different grade levels competed. In this event, the rich culture and music of the Philippines was given importance and appreciation.

Afterwards, the colorful and rich cultural arts and dances in the country was showcased in the Katutubong Sayaw. Cultural dances from different places places in the Philippines were also seen as other students watched them perform at the quadrangle.

Through the combined efforts of the students and teachers involved, the said activity ended successfully and brought back the sense of appreciation and nationalistic side of the students.

Consolites honors peace, stewardship on UN day

With the theme, "Climate Action for Peace" #Greening the Blue,” La Consolacion College of Daet Inc. (LCC-D) celebrated the United Nations Day at the LCCD’s quadrangle last October 26, 2019.

The event was organized by the LCC-D’s Araling Palipunan Club where two activities were conducted – the Sayawit and the Fashion Show with a Twist.

For the Sayawit in Category 1, the champion was

Grade 9, the first : Grade 8 and the second : Grade 7. In Category 2, the champion was Grade 11, Grade 12 got the first place and Gr- ade 10 got the second place.

For the Fashion Show with A Twist in Category A, Angella Luzarraga and Mateo Dave Bonifacio got the first place ; Shane Anthonette Zabala and Manuel Castro got the second place: Princess Nadia Topan and Inigo Dailo got the third place. In Category B, Isabel Jharline Dela Peña and Gabriel Austin De Los Reyes got the

first place ; Princess Mherstine Ramos and Francis Jan Quiozon got the second place Jea Ishi Bamba got the third place.

According to Department of Education (DepEd), this year’s celebration is also in conjunction with the International Year of Indigenous Languages being promoted by the United Nations for 2019 to highlight the importance of language diversity and the right of IP communities to the use, transmission, and development of their languages.

With the theme “Celebrating God’s Love and Actions through St. Augustine, his life and Quest for Truth”, the La Consolacion College of Daet celebrated the Feast of St. Augustine last August 27, 2019.

The program began with the Morning Prayer, Flag ceremony, followed by the Doxology presented by the Performing Arts, and the Opening Remarks of Bro. Ramil Edward Cariño.

The flow of the program proper started at 7:45 am, following the contests participated by the students from different grade levels around the campus – “Agustino Ako” Community Dance, Extemporaneous Speaking, St. Augustine’s Life Quiz Bee, and the Presentation of the “Faces of St. Augustine” Contestants with their own delivery of quotations.

The events continued at 1pm, preceded by the presentation of Guidelines and Mechanics for Judging in the different contests. It was followed by the Presentation of Song Composition with Instruments participated by students from Grades 7 to College.

After the contest, the results were gathered and the winners were awarded with certificates.

At 4pm, everyone prepared for the settling down mass at Parroquia de San Juan Bautista and followed by the procession after the mass.

All Catholic Schools that adopted St. Augustine’s philosophy acknowledge his feast day, August 28, annually. Everyone marks this day to honor the Father of religious monasticism who has developed a spiritual lifestyle that is being followed by many major and minor religious congregations all over the world.

With the aim to apply this quote and increase awareness on the importance of proper nutrition, La Consolacion College of Daet Inc. celebrated nutrition month observing the theme “Kumain nang Wasto at Maging Aktibo… Push Natin ‘To!”, at the LCC-D quadrangle last July 31, 2019.

DRR-CCA OLYMPICS

Various events and games in relation to the said activity were conducted such as Nutri Quiz, Amazing Race, Nutri Pong, Cooking Contest (Cooking of Local Delicacies), Nutri Henyo, Clay Carving and Nutri Fashion Show. The purpose of these activities and games was to strengthen students’ knowledge about nutrition, practice eating the right food and to make them become physically active.

Nutrition Month is a yearly campaign held every July to create greater awareness among Filipinos on the importance of nutrition. Presidential Decree 491 or the Nutrition Act of the Philippines mandates the NNC to lead and coordinate the nationwide campaign.

LCC-D Life Support Team finished Over-all Champion in Municipal DRR-CCA Olympics for Junior High

School Category and 2nd runner up for Senior High School Category after winning the following group awards: Best in Hazard Identification and Mapping, Quiz Relay, Fire truck Operation and Knot Tying and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

The team advanced to the Provincial DRR-CCA Olympics. The JHS Team received 3rd place and 2nd runner up in Bandaging and Transferring for Junior and Senior High School Category.

On the other hand, the Moreno JHS Team won first place in the Provincial Olympics while Camarines Norte State College SHS Team won first place.

24 CONSOLITES COMPETE FOR 22ND MATH OLYMPIAD

Students from La Consolacion College of Daet (LCC-D) joined the 22nd Philippine Mathematical Olympiad (PMO) qualifying stage for the first time held at Fr. Hilario R. Belardo, S.J. Hall, Ateneo de Naga University (AdNU) last October 12, 2019.

The participants from Grade 9 are Geraldine Anne Salaysay, Franchette Obusan, Sherdel Octa, Isy Alava, Ali Al-Khaldi, Hans Lazo, Ken Saculsan, Mikylla Marcelo, Christian Obida, Allen Tan, Alec Fernan and Raphael Carrascal, participants from grade 10 are Marianne Muceros, Vance Ong, Michael Casallos, Alessandrei Salen, Antoinette Felipe, MJ Albino, Edrian Balane and Aeron Orcales, participants from Senior High School are Karen Pacleta, Kristine Iligan, Yukari Obusan and Hazel Pardo.

The contest started at 2 pm and every student went to their designated rooms. The

test was in written form and the contestants were given 2 hours to answer the 30-question test.

After 3 hours, at exactly 5:00 pm, the time for answering the test was finished. Every student went to their respective places with their coaches and other contestants. Consolites agreed that the said test was difficult.

“I think I only got 2 items correct out of 30 questions,” said Ken Saculsan.

LCC-D’s coaches, Ma’am Rachel Bacuno, Ma’am Mary Ann Espeso and Ma’am Allana Pauline Acunin and said that it’s okay if they did not qualify for the area stage. They just want the students to gain experience and not always expecting to win and get the medal or trophy.

Some of the participants said that the said test wasn’t really hard if everyone knows how to understand the question and knows the formula and equations to be used.

“Dear young people, let yourselves be taken over by the light of Christ, and spread that light wherever you are.” – Saint Pope John Paul II La Consolacion College of Daet celebrates the Arrival of the National Youth Cross and Relic of St. Pope John Paul II at Parroquia De San Juan Bautista, Daet, Camarines Norte last August 7, 2019.

Upon arrival of the Cross and Relic coming from the Diocese of Libmanan, Consolites anticipated outside the church and waved their flags.

The Liturgical Reception and Veneration was

held by Rev. Fr. Roland Timoner, the Vice Rector of St. John the Baptist Church.

After the Veneration, the Pontifical Concelebrated Mass was held by Bishop Rex Andrew Alarcon.

In his homily, Bishop Rex stated the moments while he is in Rome and met the Pope.

A symposium was held after the mass and it was followed by another Veneration and Taize Prayer.

Moreover, a mass was held before the departure of the Relic and Cross to the Most Holy Rosary Parish in Jose Panganiban, Camarines Norte.

LCC-D Celebrates the Annual Feast of Sto. Niño

La Consolacion College of Daet honors and celebrates the Feast of Sto. Niño last January 18, 2020.

The activity highlighted street dance competition where students from different grade levels participated wearing the respective colored t-shirts assigned to them. Each dance of every grade level differ from one another, bringing more variety anduniqueness to the event.

Every grade level was

able to once again showcase their respective dances after the street dance at the quadrangle. Their colorful shirts and enthusiastic dances gave even more excitement to the event.

In the said street dance competition, the Grade 11 won. They were the ones who wore grey shirts and had props, such such fake candles made up of paper and red and yellow cloths that are tied to their hands.

After that, there was the presentation of the Little

Sto. Niño wherein a representative from the Grade 1 was the Little Sto. Niño in the event.

Afterwards, candies were showered and students had fun trying to get those sweets.

The event was a success and the hardwork and efforts done to make this happen paid off. It was a simple event that proved that there is no need for flashy costumes or extravagaunt decorations for a celebration to be successful. Afterall, it is the Feast of Sto. Niño that is being celebrated.

Following different skill competencies, La Consolacion College – Daet (LCC-D) students snatched awards in different awards in 2019 Library and Information Services Month held at Camarines Norte Provincial Library last November 15, 2019.

An elimination round was held last November 7, and lucky contestants advanced to the championship round last November 15, 2019.

Michael Joshua Casallos (10-Obedience) grabbed 1st place for the Quiz Bee in the championship round. He was coached

by Ms. Charmaine G. Doctor.

Meanwhile, Christine May Pasatiempo (10-Integrity) placed 3rd for the Kundiman Singing Contest. She was coached

by Ms. Joan B. Estrada.

Grade 10 Obedience student Margarette Sarmiento also finished 4th place for the Spelling Bee. She was coached

by Mr. Hector A. Alegre.

This year’s theme was “Inclusive, Innovative and Interconnected.”

This year, the La Consolacion College-Daet Basic Education Department (BED) celebrated the National Children’s Book Week and English Fest with the theme: "Inclusive, Innovative, Interconnected” from November 26-29, 2019 at the BED Library.

The said celebration had different events and contests, such as Selfie Contest, Book Cover Making Contest, Blog Post Making Contest, and the Library Treasure Hunt Game, which were all participated by students from elementary to high school. The contests were divided by two categories that allows more students from different levels to join. There were also awards like the Booklover Award and the Top Library User Award given to the students who truly deserve it.

The National Book Week celebration is conductedto honor the role of library and promote reading as a life skill and as a tool that helps every individual to succeed in any endeavor he/she will take in life. It will also create a positive Englishspeaking environment as well as fun activities, which are a venue for the students to express and learn English.

To bring change that will help the students enrich their goals in this institution this is what thenewly elected Student Council Body (SCB) officersstated during their campaign when students asked them on what they will do if they’re elected in their position.

LCC-D Illuminates On Its 72nd year of Foundation

ith the theme, “Unitas, Caritas, Veritas: Consolites’ Paths to Ecumenism, Interreligious Dialogue and Indigenous People,” La Consolacion College of Daet (LCC-D) celebrated its 72nd Founding Anniversary at the LCC-D’s quadrangle last February 26-29, 2020. The program was constituted with exuberant events that made the teachers, non-teaching staff, administrators and students relish every moment of the celebration

LCC-D started the celebration by a Lenten Paraliturgy where palm ashes are imposed to the forehead of all students and staffs of the school. Then, Grade 4 to 6 students showcased their dance presentation of folk dances at the quadrangle that caught up the attention of many. Grade 7 students also presented their Ibong Adarna play with their own

On the next day, February 27, 2020, the program started at 7:30A.M. with the costume parade of the dancers and the students who are portraying the roles of different characters in the stage plays to be presented.

After the parade, the DLC-DBC showcased their exhibition performance at the LCC-D’s quadrangle. It was followed by the dance presentation from Grade 1 to 3 and Grade 7 to 12. In the afternoon, the Grade 9 students presented their stage play of Noli Me Tangere with their own ways of delivering the masterpiece of Jose Rizal to the audiences.

Six students from La Consolacion College of Daet participated for the first time in the Technokids ITCUP Interschool Quizbee and IT Challenge- High School Level held at De La Salle University, Manila hosted by TechnoKids (TK) and La Salle Computer Society (LSCS) with the theme “Think.

Build. Innovate. Towards A Sustainable Development”.

This year’s IT Cup was divided into two days: January 18,2020 for the Quiz Bee and Multimedia categories and February 8, 2020 for the Robotics Category. Sixty schools, more or less, are registered this 2020.

and Franchette Obusan, both from Grade 9-Charity,were the 2 representatives of LCC-D for the Quizbee Competition category.

They scored 260 points and placed in the 15th-20th spot. Only the top 3 schools are awarded and given medals.

“We’re still happy because even if we’re first timers, we still managed to make it in a high spot. Hopefully, we are able to set the bar high and bring home the bacon next year,” the grade 9 representatives said.

Christian Jay Estravez, Michael Joshua Casallos, Andrei Hernandez and Reighel Joyce De Vera, who placed in the 11th spot,

were the Grade 10 representatives for the Robotics category.

All in all, they were so happy because they got the chance to represent the school in a grand competition like this.

Also, students are sometimes meant to just have the experience and learn something new in a different atmosphere and not always to win and be awarded with medal and trophies.

Their coaches, Ma’am Michelle Villa and Ma’am Christine Pausa, said that even if they were first timers, they proved to themselves and the school they are representing that they are competitive and they can keep in pace with the other schools as well.

The 72nd founding anniversary was indeed a remarkable event for everyone as they honor the founder of the school, Rev. Msgr. Antonino Reganit and commemorate the positive aspects of the school. This is a special day where the school has a chance to reflect not only the beginnings of the College and its founders, but also on the significant development since the College’s inception. It is a day to celebrate its history and revisit and reconnect with the continuing journey of the College. The different events and activities were conducted to show the vitality of the school in 72 years and encourages us to continue pursuing the vision and mission with the same enthusiasm.

La Consolacion College of Daet Inc. (LCC-D) joined the Association of Schools of the Augustinian Sisters (ASAS) Augustinian Youth Camp, held last January 16 - 17, 2020 at La Consolacion College Rinconada, Iriga Campus, Camarines Sur with the theme "YOUTH IN MISSION: BELOVED, GIFTED, EMPOWERED".

Aside from LCCD, St. Francis Parochial School (SFPS), La Consolacion College Rinconada-Baao Campus (LCCB) and La Consolacion College Rinconada- Iriga (LCCI) also participated in the said event.

Activities such as talk and workshop, team building activities, Taize, Meditation & Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, Animation, and praise & Worship follows were conducted.

One of the most awaited event

is the battle of the bands, wherein LCCD's own band composed of Ron Angelo Dela Torre (Vocalist), Christine May Pasatiempo (Vocalist), Zed Villespin (Lead guitarist), John Francis Torralba (Drummer), and Wilfredo Caldit (Pianist) showcase their talents and finishes 3rd place.

Moreover, the 2nd day events only lasted until eight in the morning, Holy Mass at 5:30 and Synthesis at 6:30 until 7 in the morning. Then afterwards, closing remarks and picture taking of different delegates together with their groupings was done.

The main goal of the said activity is to provide knowledgeable thoughts and ideas regarding human rights and to expose students to different religious activities that focus on self-meditation and socialization, which also provide the participants courage in exchanging ideas and practice communication skills.

earning starts from our first words, first understanding, fascinations that arouse curiosity, and the compliance for the future. This is not only limited to the four sides of the classroom as it is a continuous process that plays a big part in our lives. Such sentiment should be considered in the mindset and system of the current curriculum of the education in the Philippines.

said one of the solutions to address the poor proficiency rate of Filipino students would be to give them proper nutrition and learning support starting at a young age. Many elementary and high school students still do not know how to read in some areas in the country. In the student behavioral and competence, there are so many things we should change and further improve such as policies that before entering high school, the students must implement the core subjects by heart and use it in real life situations.

Last December 2019, the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) released the results from the PISA Test held involving different counties including Philippines last 2018. Every three years, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) administers different tests to 15 years old students across the globe where in 2018, 600,000 students took the test from 79 nations. They assess the abilities of the students in reading, mathematics, science and skills to meet real life challenges. The Philippines’ purpose for joining PISA is to establish a baseline for measuring the development of education in the Philippines vis-à-vis global standards.

Addressing to the issue, the Department of Education will lead this national effort for quality basic education through Sulong Edukalidad by implementing aggressive reforms in four key areas: (1) K to 12 review and updating, (2) Improvement of learning facilities, (3) Teachers and school heads’ upskilling and reskilling through a transformed professional development program; and (4) engagement of all stakeholders for support and collaboration. In prior to the statement of DepEd, Duterte approved the program to review the K to 12 program and enhance the skills of teachers in a cabinet meeting where the PISA results were discussed.

It is the first time that our country participated and know how competent the Filipino students comparing to international standards. Among the 79 countries, the Philippines ranked horribly last in reading and ranked second to the last in mathematics and science beating Dominican Republic. With these ratings, there goes the quality of education. The results refer to the quality of education where the global standards are met and forwarding excellence towards

literacy. People in the social media were dismayed with the numbers. Some compared and even blamed technology. But what is the main reason of why the numbers feel upsetting?

PISA provided a discussion of 2018 results highlighting Philippines. In some instances, Filipino students reported that many students are being bullied, some felt lonely in class and the teacher struggles to discipline its students. According to the data of OECD, 63% of the students supposedly hold a “growth mindset” meaning the students think that they can improve their intelligence through hard work.

But after all of these, you might say it is unfair to compare our country to different nations worldwide because they are more advance and well equipped. Let us take deeper look on the different factors contributing to the result. The previous administration touted the “Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013” widely known

as K-12 law as the biggest educational reform in decades which adds two more years in high school. Its goal is to give every student an opportunity to receive quality education that is globally competitive pedagogically curriculum in lined with the international methods and standards. Reflecting to the PISA result, the education system is neither “globally competitive” or par to the international standards but we’re far from that pace.

Many problems and issues are interfering to the system. Our present curriculum is ill-prepared and its transition is rushed. As implementation from the previous administration, the lack of learning materials. Like technology-based materials such as laptops, projectors, television sets, and internet connection in different schools are not sufficient and makes it worse? Some are sold or even stolen because of improper storages and personal uses. Second is the misprints

of books. According to ABSCBN’s Failon Ngayon documentary, there are approximately 250 million worth of books stored and unused because of misprinted information. Lastly, the readiness. The government invested billions of pesos in infrastructure like classrooms and schools, hiring teachers and conducting seminars, research and development and subsidies or vouchers for students. But the government should develop it more even further because there is a lot to be improved in our education system.

The Department of Education take efforts in making our education system effective for the needs of the 21st century learners. As connection to the ratings, it will be an initiative in reflecting and solidifying the core values of the curriculum such as the strengthened value. To give students a wake-up call for the future and many generations to come that education is important and must be applied not only in the mind but also in the heart.

There are many students who are lacking in discipline. Excessive use of gadgets is one of the factors that also contribute to the outcome of the rating. Many students spend their time in screens and going to different social media platforms. There is no problem in using technology, we should have control and maximize it for education purposes. s Raffy Tulfo in Action rise to fame and makes a name in YouTube in the early year 2019, it became the source of issues that captivates the interests of viewers and listeners. It is well known that even OFWs look forward to be updated in the videos uploaded from time to time.

Raffy Tulfo or somehow recognized as “Idol Raffy” became the “Icon of Justice” in the Philippines, until he received backlash from the netizens when a grandmother of a student sought help from him and raised a concern regarding a teacher mishandling discipline towards the student.

The child’s grandmother and two parents went to Raffy Tulfo in Action in order to gain justice and to complain the teacher of the child who was accused of child abuse because of her own way of discipline. Apparently, the student was forced to go out of the classroom because he couldn’t bring his card which was needed on that day by the teacher. The teacher brought the student’s chair outside and even said to the parent who witnessed the problem “Hayaan mo siya diyan, manigas siya dyan!”.

The grandparent of the child also said that the teacher maltreats the child from previous times, but the child won’t say anything to them. She also added that the “abuse” done by the teacher seem to make her student humiliated in front of his schoolmates and that it traumatized him.

After Tulfo interviewed the grandmother about what else happened, they then talked to the teacher over the phone, which was aired on the program. The teacher stated that she had no intentions on hurting the child, and that she was only disciplining him. Tulfo explained that what the teacher did was indeed child abuse and she could be arrested for what she did. He also said that the trauma may have made a huge impact to the emotional and psychological health of the child. At the end, the teacher made an apology for her actions, yet the grandmother was furious and said that forcing her grandchild to get out of the classroom was injustice and that the teacher should learn her lesson. Tulfo agreed and asked the parents of the child about what they should do to the teacher.

The mother of the child said that the teacher should get her license revoked and the father agreed. Tulfo suggested that the teacher should resign in her work and have her license revoked rather than defending it in the court because if she chose to defend her case on child abuse, there may be a high chance of getting detained.

The netizens stated that Tulfo shouldn’t have made the teacher choose from two reckless and non-sense options. They also said “Raffy Tulfo in Action” should filter the cases that they handle because what the teacher did deserves a fair judgment and resolved with legal procedures.

Teachers have every right to discipline their students, but it must only be done in the right way. They should never cross the line and they must always know their boundaries.

Complaining incidents like this should be dealt by the Department of Education (DepEd) and not in a televised program viewed by many people. Both parties in the presence of the school administrators can also settle the problem. They didn’t have to go that far just to confront the teacher and teach her a lesson. What the parents and Tulfo suggested was truly futile and unfair from the position of the teacher. Getting her license revoked because of her own way of discipline was exaggerated. Teaching is one of the noblest professions and we should all know the value of a teacher.

If there was really wrong on the teacher’s side, they should have investigated it further and followed a legal and proper process.

If justice weren’t pursued, then that is when this incident (seeking help through Raffy Tulfo) should be taken care of. Cases like this should be solved privately and accounted with confidentiality.

Everyone should contemplate and reflect thoroughly in every problem or incident.

They should always put in mind that complaining to “Raffy Tulfo in Action” or announcing their problems publicly is certainly not a solution to whatever they are dealing with. In addition, programs like this do not, and undoubtedly cannot handle the legal justice system. As for the parents, the teacher was only disciplining the child and had no intentions to hurt him. Although the teacher may have done wrong for letting her student out in the middle of the class. It is wrong to take actions like this impulsively.

Talking to the teacher privately should resolve the problem alone.

THE UNCERTAIN FUTURE OF ABS-CBN CORP.

ith the ongoing situation of the issue regarding the renewal of ABS-CBN franchise, it seemed quite unclear whether it will follow through as the House committee on legislative franchises held the first hearing on the bills that would renew the franchise last March 10, 2020. In the midst of the lockdown of Luzon due to the COVID-19, the said franchise is set to expire in early April, but it is still continuing its operations on provisional authority from the NTC.

The renewal of the franchise and its possibility of not being renewed gave an unsettling feeling to their employees. It is clear to see that many people will be affected if the renewal does not follow through. With the wide influence of ABS-CBN and its years of existence of service in providing news and entertainment, people are rather worried

nding the Visiting Forces Agreement between the Philippines and the United States is a deeply unpopular move. In this case, Philippines risks danger by abruptly terminating US defense agreement.

Cancelling the VFA requires not a knee-jerk decision but a response resulting from a cautious analysis of the VFA’s essential content.

President Duterte moved to scrap the VFA after two US diplomatic actions irked him. In December 2016, Duterte warned of an "eventual repeal or abrogation" of the VFA after the US did not push through with an aid package for the Philippines from the Millennium Challenge Corporation, an aid-giving body. In January 2020, the US cancelled the visa of Senator dela Rosa over links to human rights violations, again prompting Duterte to say he will "terminate" the VFA within a month if the US does not fix what it had done.

The Visiting Forces Agreement is a pact between the Philippines and the United States containing guidelines and conditions for US military and civilian personnel who are temporarily sent to the Philippines. The agreement was an affirmation of the two countries' obligations under the Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT) signed in 1951. The MDT is a commitment to defend each other – in accordance with constitutional processes – in the event of an armed attack by a hostile party.

Not only would the US regard the Philippines as a less reliable regional ally, but the Philippines would lose access to US training that includes the badly needed counterterrorism training and assistance. It will preclude the Philippines from accessing American intelligence and surveillance information. It will give America less reasons to extend grants of military hardware needed by the armed forces to modernize. All these, taken collectively, will make it more difficult for the Philippine military to carry out its mandate to protect and defend the Filipino people.

Surely, the VFA can be abrogated, but not at this time. Alliances are built on shared goals, values and long-term national interests, and should transcend the short-term issues of individual administrations.

It will be best to wait for the right people to make the right decision for the right reasons at the right time.

In this case, with VFA abrogated, it is now time for the Philippines to strive to be self-reliant in defense and security. That surely is in our national interest to be so.

We have different preferences and different visions in life. Accepting who you truly are and breaking the walls of division. Loving someone may be difficult especially if we contribute in narrowing the possiblities of successful relationship rather the person that you love is the same gender as you are. In the film Love, Simon, the main character had a hard time in going out of the closet and express his feelings to the person he loves. But the lesson to the story is all about acceptance. It also shows about how we come out and express our own true colors and accept the fact on what we believe in our objectives in life. But looking at the other side of the spectrum, the colors signify and blossom.

At the book of Genesis, God created two humans, their sexuality is Male and Female. God called them as predecessors of our existence. But as humans thrive in the past millennia, many discoveries and self-realization took place.

Sexual identity is the personal sense of one’s own gender. By determining your sexual identity, you may consider yourself as heterosexual, which is a romantic and sexual attraction to the opposite sex while in the other hand, homosexuality defines about people who have romantic and sexual attraction to their same sex. Bisexual is when you have same romantic and sexual attraction for both sexes. To those people are attracted to their same same sex, both or changed their sex, they are part of the LGBTQIA+ community.

The name of the community is an initialism that stands for L for lesbian, G for gay, B for bisexual, T for transgender, Q for queer, I for intersex, A for asexual or allied and + for all the rest of the spectrum.

Here in the Philippines, the group is known for the achievements of the members. Such as Boy Abunda, Vice Ganda, Ice Segguera, Tim Yap, Ricky Reyes, John Lapus and many more who excels in different career pathways such as acting, business, politics and etc. Geraldine Roman is a journalist and the first LGBT congresswoman. She was elected as the representative of the 1st district of Bataan following the 2016 Philippine elections and became the first transgender woman elected to the Philippine Congress.

The first nation in Asia to legalize same sex marriage is Taiwan. After implementing it last May 24, 2019, the LGBT community of Taiwan received many backlashes. The newlyweds were abused as ‘dirty’ by the Anti-Homosexual groups. Showing who you’re truly are, is being hard and scary. In some countries they do suppress, mistreat and makes worse sending them to jail if caught. Due to these circumstances, the community shouts for equality. Having mutual respect and reciprocal acceptance with those people who aren’t part of the community. Many protests and rallies were initiated in different countries for the initiative of respect.

There are many commentaries between the issue of gender equality here in the country. Like adding another comfort room for

members of the community. The issue sparked when a transgender named Gretchen Diaz went to the ladies restroom at a mall and harassed by a janitor. Many in the social media space reacted to the viral video. Eventually, Diaz spoke to the public and suggests about her advocacy in implementing SOGIE Bill.

According to Cosmopolitan PH, it is basically an anti-discrimination bill. It recognizes that many people, whether they’re LGBTQIA++ or cisgender, experience discrimination based on their SOGIE. The bill seeks to protect all people from this kind of discrimination. With the SOGIE Bill, certain activities can now be declared discriminatory, and you can actually file charges if any person, corporation, or organization commits these acts.

These activities include the promotion of stigma. Many organizations in the community reacted on the situation like Lagablab and Pantay Pilipinas are Pro-SOGIE.

But the house bill didn’t passed.

The stand of the Catholic church is to respect the community instead. According to Pope Francis, God doesn’t condemn people of LGBT. We should have an initiative of respect to the different values of other people. We are created as one. We should stand as one, sharing different point of views and exercising openness. We people of different perspectives, we should create a stronger relationship in breaking the walls of inequality. Creating justice, proper knowledge and mutual acceptance.

God called us to serve and love each other. Having peace with each other and accepting who you truly are. According to Cyndi Lauper’s song True Colors, we should accept and be proud of who you are. What matters most is what you’re doing. Doing what is right and for the common good.

While on their way to file the certificate of candidacy at Shariff Aguak for 2010 gubernatorial elections of Buluan’s former mayor Esmael “Toto” Mangudadatu, his wife, sisters, journalists, media workers, lawyers and some civilians, with a total num-

ber of 58 people were killed and buried in three mass graves on November 23,2009. Prime suspects were the Ampatuans; the domineering clan in Maguindanao, having Andal Ampatuan Sr. as its governor and Andal Jr. or Datu Unsay, as Ampatuan town’s mayor that time. It was also confirmed that over 197 suspects were involved in this massacre.

Unexpectedly, even some officers of the Philippine National Police (PNP) were among those charged according to the PNP’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG). For so long, families of the victims, the national press and media workers yearned for justice in this inequitable occurrence. Secondly, some middle school students suffer different mental disorders like depression due stress that they got when they have lot of projects or any school related activities that they have to do in a small period of time.

As for the experiences of the students who suffer from different levels of stress, the school guidance office offers help to those who need support in these types of cases. It is clearly seen how political affairs stained humanity and ethical processes. May the outcome of the trial serve as an affirmation, especially to the journalists, that the press’ struggles will now be addressed further. Every journalist must have the freedom to express their opinions and to reveal the truth without the fear of being in danger. Lastly, as for the victims’ families, may they completely find the equity they have been longing to attain, for it is their right to have justice be favorable upon their side.

I feel glorious, got a chance to start again” – Macklemore

I remember those days after class, my friend Von, Jaren and John Lloyd whistles for their afternoon formation. Hearing those melodious tones and perfect momentums of twirlers catching their own batons and troops that walks seamlessly throughout the quadrangle preparing for their big event.

Dressed in their majestic Type A uniforms sewn for ease of movement, crowns ornamented with various shining beads complementing their lavishly looking batons, uniforms pressed without leaving any crease, standing in a couple of hours with their well-polished shoes, the conductor and majorette whistles as nameplates attached and hats tucked in honor as sign of commencement of their days preparing for this momentous event. La Consolacion College of Daet’s Junior High School Citizenship Advancement Training (CAT) Unit, Drum and Bugle Corps (DBC), and Twirlers bags major awards at the 11th Bicol Regional Military Parade Competition last September 20, 2019 at Naga City.

The CAT troops were led by Corps Commander JohnLloyd B. Pentecostes (10-Sincerity), DBC by Band Conductor/ Leader Von Joseph D. Campita (10-Integrity), and Twirlers by Band Majorette Jaren Carmie Raymundo (10-Interiority).

The Eve of #BRMPC2019 Troops, DBC and Twirlers fall in line for the Morning Prayer and send-off. Words of support and positivity were drawn out leading the way through victory.

Band equipment and unit’s riffles were packed in boxes strengthened with straw ribbons. Members of the LCCD Life Support Team prepared their medical kits and serve as student aides for the event. All luggage were stowed and the bus was off to the Pilgrim City of Bicol. I was sitting at the DBC’s bus and had an opportunity to be seated with Von, the DBC Conductor. I asked him if the band is prepared and confident in taking the lead spot in one of the prestigious event in the whole region. He said that they prepared well enough but still felt anxious in the possibility of winning this year in prior to last year’s ranking. Hours passed and we’re directed to St. Joseph School which was our designated quarters.

We prepared the food for the contestants and ran some errands for their needs such as toiletries, footwear etc.

Night before the event, some troops are furnishing their swords and pressing their uniforms while others pray for success and later on slept well for the big day ahead.

D-DAY: CAT, DBC and Twirlers Shines at BRMPC 2019

The most anticipated day in all Bicolandia finally came. The contestants woke up 5am early in the morning to satisfy their daily routines.

As I arrived to the twirlers’ quarters, I saw their faces being applied with make-up, with their passionate eyes filled with excitement and energy. The troops and DBC members wore their hats, nameplates and IDs showing honor and pride in this institution. As we walked outside the school, we felt tension and excitement. Hundreds of contenders attended the event as this year marks the longest and garnered most-entries from schools and universities in different provinces of the whole region. The corps commander was placed upfront following the twirlers, DBC members and troops. Some felt ill and sought medical help from the school aides. Some water bottles were placed in my bag for the contestants if ever they get thirsty along the way. The competition started as they walked through the streets of Naga going to Plaza Quezon. Carrying my DSLR camera together with my fellow photographer Sherdel, capturing the best moments in this year’s memorable event. Approaching the Plaza Mayor, feelings intensified as we all watched them perform. Ms. Michelle Villa, Mrs. Virginia Pasatiempo and I were the persons allowed to enter the competing area. Long barricades were placed and thousands of people watched the competition in site and livestream. Before entering, names were told by the host and started by the whistle of the corps commander, conductor and band majorette. They marched towards the stage and gave salute and performed all-out. After the performance, it’s a big relief that it’s now over, everybody was tired and hungry and later on tuned to the awarding ceremony.

What is your reaction after LCCD Unit bagged awards at BRMPC 2019?

Von: Syempre ano, Grateful. Worth it yung pinaghirapan namin simula noong June. Kasi matagal din kaming nagprepare kasi yung batch namen parang last year palang, nagpaplano kami kung ano ang gagawin.

Jaren: I’m happy. Kasi after ilang years na di kami nakasali finally nakakuha na kami ng place in a military competition and also we’re proud na naka first ang DBC. JohnLloyd: Unexpected.

Mr. Aaron: Ang masasabi ko lang, we are confident na hindi kami uuwi na walang maiiuwi na award. We are also thankful na nakuha naming yung Most Disciplined Award.

What inspires you for winning at BMRPC 2019?

V: Yung pagkatalo namin last year. Nasa mindset naming na bumawi, kasi last year madami kaming natutunan kaya isinaisip naming kung ano dapat ang aming gagawin.

The contest ended at sunset and we arrived at Plaza Mayor with full hope. The other members of the unit were inside the quarters and tuned in via livestream for the awarding ceremony. The unit garnered five awards: A back to back win of Most Disciplined Unit, 1st Best DBC Marching Unit, 4th Best Marching Majorettes, 8th Place Best Marching CAT Girls and 10th Best Marching CAT Boys.

I conducted an interview to the Corps Commander JohnLloyd B. Pentecostes, Band Conductor/ Leader Von Joseph D. Campita, Band Majorette Jaren Carmie Raymundo and Ms. Erica Marcelo interviewed the Unit Commander Mr. Aaron Saludes.

In light of all the weeks of training, thousands of walks and numerous hardships and triumphs, winning the competition is the fruit of being a team as one band and one sound.

JohnLloyd: Well of course, my fellow troops.

What will be your advice for next year’s batch?

V: Galingan nila, gawin din nila kung ano ang ginawa namin o pwede mas maayos, commited at mas disiplinado. Dapat may cooperation at unity. Feeling ko kung bakit kami nanalo dahil doon.

Jaren: Good luck and have fun. Hindi siya madali, pero you’ll have fun and enjoy sa life niyo as a DBC, Twirler and CAT. JohnLloyd: Good luck, galingan nila.

How did you improve the performance of this batch that resulted to its winning?

Mr. Aaron: Pagdating sa improvement, yung award lang. In terms of the organization, kung ano yung mission ng organization ay nami-meet naman ito. Consistent padin kung ano noon at ngayon. Nagbabago lang yan depende sa award na nakukuha. Pero in terms of training, mas well-trained ngayon because of summer training.

We don’t need revolution, what we need is an open and honest conversation.”

This year, in preparation for the 500 years of Christianity, we celebrate the Year of Ecumenism and Interreligious Dialogue with the theme: Dialogue Towards Harmony. Ecumenism is defined as interactions among members of Christian denominations and interreligious dialogue, on the other hand, is the encounters between members of different religions. By having these two words as the central aspect of the said theme, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) aims to celebrate “The human fraternity by promoting the culture of dialogue as a path to peace” , which appeared clearly when Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar embraced each other and called for peace during his apostolic visit to the Middle East.

Religious violence is continuously becoming evident all over the world. Reasons such as scriptures, beliefs, politics, economic and community interests, exploitation, and ideology are the common causes why discrimination, war, force conversion, and other forms of brutality occur. Therefore, in welcoming year 2020, the Church called for a mass attention in exercising inclined values regarding religious differences.

By being said, the CBCP integrated a logo for this year's theme. It features two outlines in blue and red, which signifies Pacific ocean and Filipino islands for blue, and the textile art of the indigenous people is represented by the red color. A heart-shaped space between the shapes can be also seen with the theme placed upon it.

The Church wants to promote peace and harmony despite diverse religions. They added that understanding and thorough dialogue is needed to attain such goal. We are reminded to treat each

other as brothers and sisters and not as individuals divided by dissimilar beliefs. Consequently, we are taught that we must enhance building bridges rather than walls through enhancing communication and excluding unnecessary judgements.

This harmonious celebration is a particular phase of the nine-year “spiritual journey”, which started in 2013, to prepare for the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Christianity in the Philippines, which will happen in year 2021.

Beyond Goals and Gold by: Eimiel Simone Escueta

Already at the top of his game, Korean director behind the dystopian film “Snow Piercer” Bong Joon Ho, wowed the world once again with his Oscar winning 2019 film, “Parasite”. The film owned the Oscars night by bagging multiple awards including the first ever non-English language film to make it as Best Picture. This statement alone is a testament to the success of telling the tragicomedy story about how the lives of two families from different social classes got tangle up together and ended up traumatically.

The film started by giving the viewers an observation of the current status of the Kim family portrayed by Kang-Ho Song as Mr. Kim (father), Jang Hye-jin as Chong-sook (mother), Park So-dam as Ki-jeong (daughter) also known as Jessica, and Choi Woo-shik as Kiwoo (son) also known as Kevin.

With the family clinging to a pizza box folding job to survive the everyday life in an underground apartment, Ki-woo’s friend, Min, became their newfound hope when he asked him as a substitute tutor to his student from a rich household in Seoul.

With the need to have an exemplary background, he was able

to forge his documents with the help of his spunky sister. As his journey to the wealthy Park family was doing great, the suspense started to build up when the Kim family started to infiltrate and replace the house helpers one by one—Ki-seong as an art therapist fraud; Mr. Kim as a wealthy family driver; and Chong-sook as a helper from a fake VIP care company.

The Park family is formed by Mrs. Park Yeonkyo (mother) portrayed by Cho Yeo-jeon, Mr. Nathan Park (father) portrayed by Lee Sun Gyun, Da-hye (daughter) portrayed by Jeong Ji-soo, and Da-song portrayed by Jeong Hyun-joon; none of who suspected that they were being infiltrated by a low class family posing as high class society workers. While everything is going well for the Kim family, they would later know that the replacement of the last helper, Moon-gwang portrayed

Bong Joon Ho really impressed the viewers from the chilling cinematography to the unexpected plot twist and dark humors. It really highlighted how diverse societal class-

es are—from the way they live, the way they think and the way they maximize things. Unlike other movies where the rich and famous are spoiled and obnoxious, the Parks seemed like a perfect family with normal “family” issues— nothing too complicated to handle. But they were also gullible and insensitive despite being well-intentioned. Having an overflowing source of money made them feel like they do not need to assess a lot of things—just put out cash and it will take care of everything. The Kims, on the other hand, were sharp minded. They knew that this is going to be their only shot to have the life they dreamed of—even if it takes deceiving people.

Taking a look at the meaning of Parasite, it was an amazing analogy to the plot of the film. Parasites will do everything to take over the host, as much as the Kims dreamt of owning the house of the Park family. But not only that—the plot twist that nobody expected was the huge role of the helper, Moon-gwang, who was hiding her husband inside a secret basement. The building up of the story was filled with suspense from the moment they were able to keep the house to

Our Dearest Friend

My ever dearest Bee.... Many have said that saying goodbye will never be too easy. Especially when it is close to your heart.

When I heard the news, that due to some sort of reasons the old Jollibee will close, I became sad. I remember the days where our moms used to brought us food from Jollibee- Daet in our

school during examinations and promised whenever our practice is done we’re going to get some French Fries and Yum burgers from Jollibee. Because back then it was the only Jollibee in our town. Right now, it all just became a memory.

It was vivid to my mind that the old Jollibee saw my best and worst times. It was my comfort zone because whenev-

themselves for a night while the Parks were out camping, to the unplanned home visit by Moongwang, until it all became brutal — blood, and a specific scene, one that triggered the death of Mr. Park — his constant complaining of Mr. Kim’s smell; the smell of their underground apartment, the smell of poverty.

With the rise of anticipation from every scene, Bong Joon Ho succeeded in telling many perspectives that will always be timely— poverty, privilege, and class discrimination. He showed what poverty can do to someone — harm and deceive.

The raining scene was one of the highlights of the movie as it shows how privilege looks like. For people in the upper class like Mrs. Park, it was a blessing. It somehow got rid of the city dirt, after all; and it was a bright sunny day for Da-song’s birthday celebration. But nothing will compare to the pain of Mr. Park when he heard those words just after they spent the night on the evacuation floor after the rain washed away their home.

There was also a constant scene where Mr. Kim

would always comment on Mr. Park’s private relationship with his wife. This always caught him off guard as he didn’t want his servers crossing the line. But he never crosses the line except for his smell, Mr. Park would say. This shows how the upper class treats the lower class. “You can’t comment about my life because you’re not importantly connected to me, you’re just my server”. It screams social discrimination. Until the climax of the film, while it was right for Mr. Park to prioritize his family, he showed no concern to those who were already devastated by the situation a.k.a Ki-seong who was already stabbed.

Overall, this film deserves all the applause it can get. There were downright comical scenes—like how the Kim family permeated the household. One scene showed Ki-seong leaving an underwear inside a car to plot against the Park family’s driver, who was later on succeeded by his dad. This is how the film became award winning. Bong Joon Ho got all the right ingredients on making a dark comedic film about social inequality.

Kobe Bean Bryant also known as “The Black Mamba” because of his killer and clutch instincts in playing basketball, he also showed us the way of playing basketball.

Who could have thought that a high school kid would fake his talents to NBA and became

July 24, 2019, a ninth-grade student named Rafael Ace I. Ubana raised the banner of La Consolacion College of Daet by making it to one of the top 10 best films in the Bicol Cinemalaya Short Shorts, one-minute film making competition with his film ‘Sa Oras ni Bathala.’ This film is about a man trying to trick ‘Bathala’ which shows how devious humans are specifically when the discussion is about money.

He started getting interested in film making when he was in sixth-grade and after that he later confirmed that “film making is my passion.” After years of hard work and perseverance, he started to join several film competitions, making ‘Sa Oras ni Bathala’ one of them but this, as the first film under his direction.

For him, this was an unexpected win thinking that he gets to compete with the whole Bicol Region, but despite that thought, he always believes that “when you are passionate about something you get to be able to think about nothing but success, because you are not just into the fact that you want to join and that’s it. What’s truly a fact is that you get to do the things that you love and by doing that, you get to be successful in a way that you’re able to deliver the message your heart wants to state and the awareness, your voice wants to shout” and ends his statement with a one-liner saying “keep grinding.”

Orange. A color so distinct that it is easily recognizable as people set their eyes on the overused rectangular paper.

Wrinkled and full of dirt from hands that got their grasps on the paper. It was not necessary to look at the numbers printed on the rectangular paper as the color orange it possesses gave a clear picture that it is a P20 bill.

A recognizable banknote with Manuel Quezon’s face on the front side and the Banaue Rice Terraces and the palm civet on the reversed side. An overused and beloved one that will be taken away in the near future.

Despite its years of existence of being an orange rectangular paper, change was bound to happen. A drastic change that will blind many by its shiny demeanor and place heavy weights on people’s shoulders.

The eye-catching orange paper bill will fade into the background, becoming like the other silver coins. Eyes would have a hard time distinguishing which is which. Eyes as blurry as an old woman selling delicacies while roaming around a street.

With a basket full of treats, people will come and buy her products. Whilst doing so, she has a hard time distinguishing what coin she was being handed.

With her eyes narrowed at the coin on her palm, she assumed that it was P20 which was the total value of the sweets being bought by customer. Unknown to her, it was actually less than the value she thought it was. The silver coin on her palm shimmered as the sunlight fell upon it, symbolizing its aesthetic demeanor. It was indeed beautiful as it depicts the clock ticking in a fast pace and the progressing modern world.

The coin will no more be thought of as having greater value as people set eyes upon it. Seeing the once orange paper turn into a small mere coin made them think unconsciously of its devaluation.

The devaluation that gave them an idea that the peso currency is decreasing. With that thought in mind, people will have a hard time adjusting to the future ahead of them.

Much like the old woman who was used to the iconic orange paper bill, godparents who used to put the paper bills inside the red rectangular envelopes that made their godchildren’s face light up will possibly result in giving a P50 bill instead. A small price to pay for a change of face.

Everything changes but everything stays the same. A saying that mirrors the fate of the banknote. Its merit in actuality re-

mains the same as before. However, in people’s mind, it no longer represents its former value. Not being able to get their grasps of the rectangular paper made their minds resort to diminishing its worth. It less when it is small. Their minds would have a hard time wrapping around the idea.

The old woman as previously said was not able to adjust as she was used to the past.

Her age mirrors that of the overused P20 bill. A vibrant orange that gives off ease for the people who use it. A color so bright and distinct that will be updated for aesthetic and cost purposes.

They say it was less expensive in terms of production. It saves money and yet, loses its sense of ease for the people who once got their eyes on the orange bill.

The orange bill will no longer be the same colorful paper that easily brought attention to itself. Its unique quality will no longer be as it is. It will become uniform and the same as the other coins. Shining silvers that made noises and weighing heavy enough to bring unease in people’s transactions.

However, change is unavoidable and what we see will not be important as the coin will stay the same.

It will remain but it will no longer be the orange that we are used to.

The implementation of lock down among big cities throughout different countries and states seems to have slowed down the further spread of the virus, but, the effect of this measure is expected to be short-lived. A person who is a potential carrier of the virus and was able to travel from one place to another might infect the people they had contact with without them knowing.

On 14th day of January 2020, a fire occurred in Australia burning an estimated 18.6 million hectares, destroyed an average of 5,900 buildings and killed 34 people.

Many animals died and are near to extinction like koalas, kangaroos, camels and other wildlife. According to The New York Times, almost 25,00 koalas were dead , 10,000 camels died and an estimation of one billion animals perished across Australia. Australian wildfire took place because of the rising levels of CO2 that warms the planet. This year, Australia set another temperature with an average of 41.9 °C that was recorded on the 18th day of December 2019 which caused drought and leads to wildfires.

According to research, human-caused climate change played a great role in this fire.

It became worse due to heat and drought that their country was facing at that moment.

Human activities greatly affect the environment and its temperature. So we, humans, must be very cautious with what we are doing because we are now dealing with massive environment problems. We should start altering our bad habits to good ones so that we can create a beautiful and harmonious environment for ourselves and for the future generations.

I woke up one day and I can see no one. All I can see is a black hallway leading to nowhere.

I smiled sarcastically asking myself what I have done to deserve this kind of misery. My vivid life before suddenly turned into life without meaning. I cannot move because my muscles are getting weaker and I can’t even shout nor talk because I am experiencing sore throat. I can’t believe in what happened today, right now,

I know that I am experiencing the post- polio syndrome. I lost hope because I knew that there is no specific treatment for this kind of disease. However, it could be prevented by having shots such as polio vaccine.

Remembering that, I suddenly want to blame my parents because they didn’t allow me to take vaccinations for, they were afraid because something bad might happen to me. I wanted to blame them for they didn’t get me vaccinated when I was still a child. But then, that won’t do anything, the pain won’t subside. It is now here and all I need to do is to have some rest, asses my physical health and attend some physical therapies.

Years had passed and I am getting better and better. Until one day, the doctor finally said that I am free of Polio. I learned my lesson in my journey but what I remember the most is “Childhood vaccines are one of the greatest triumphs over modern medicine.”

This is my worst battle with disease, and I am prouder to say that I am a fighter.

Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your blood glucose is too high. According to statistics, it is one of the major disease that is found in the whole world with an average of 422 million people ranging from 18 years old and above. Due to this problem, a girl from Iloilo city discovered a potentially anti-diabetic component in a fruit called Muntingia Calabura or simply, Aratilis.

Maria Isabel Layson, a student scientist from Iloilo City, discovered a potential component from Aratilis fruit that can cure diabetes. The said fruit is rich in antioxidants and studies have shown that it really has an anti-diabetic property. The components were known as anthocyanin, flavonoid and polyphenol. Those three components are known to be strong candidates to reduce the pathogenesis and complications of diabetes. According to studies, anthocyan-

Thailand started the year by implementing plastic ban. It was launched by the government and it is effective until the end of 2021 in the hopes to reduce the amount of plastic wastes in the country.

The campaign was initiated after the series of deaths among several animals reportedly because of ingestion of plastic products.

The government wants to stop the 'throw-away culture' and they are encouraging all the Thai citizens to use cloth bags as a substitute to avoid tons of accumulated plastic waste.

Many are familiar with thse food culture of South Korea. It is mostly seen when our favorite oppas and unnies eat Korean foods in K-dramas. Korean culture widely influenced different countries such as here in the Philippines. One of the well-known Korean food here in the country is Samgyeopsal, it’s Korean’s take to barbecue. It is a meal where there are different types and cuts of meat like pork and beef drenched in marinades and sauces.

In the peak of Samgyeopsal’s popularity in our country, the African Swine Fever (ASF) suddenly arose.

ASF is a kind of virus that affects domestic and wild pigs. It can transmit via contaminated feed or fomites causing pigs to get high fever and loses appetite. It also causes hemorrhages in the skin and internal organs. The life span of pigs after affliction is 2-10 days and there are no vaccines against ASF yet.

The virus isn’t considered a health threat. However, humans can become carriers once infected pork is ingested or people got close to the infected meat. The virus can sustain even if the meat is processed or

canned. The ASF virus have been detected in 32 provinces in China with almost 1.2 million pigs culled in effort to stop the spreading of the disease.

According to Agriculture Secretary William Dar, there are first two provinces affected namely Rizal and Bulacan in 7 places specifically in Rizal: San Jose, Macabud, San isidro, San Rafael, Mascap, and Cupang in Antipolo and Guiguinto in Bulacan of ASF Outbreak last September 2019. Dar suspects that the virus may have brought by overseas Filipinos from ASF-affected countries.

The pig industry in the country had a big impact most especially to farmers and breeders with a whopping 260 billion comprise roughly twothirds or 65% of the industry. A live pig merely cost about thousands of pesos therefore many farmers becoming overwhelmed. The government’s action to this situation is giving subsidies and precautionary meat inspections in provincial boarders, loading docks and ports. The government enforced the 1-7-10 Protocol which pigs being culled in affected areas. Within a 7-kilometer radius, authorities conduct surveillance and limit any animal movement. The government also banned pork imports from countries with ASF.

The Department of Agriculture recommends swine raisers to implement biosecurity measures and promptly report any unusual animal deaths in their farms and refraining feeding food scraps. Consumers should be vigilant in buying meat products and always look for the NMIS seal for the guarantee that the pork that you’ll consume is ASF free.

Here me out Samgyeopsal fans, there’s nothing to worry about. We should know the places ensuring that they cater only ASF free meats. The most important is to be aware. Awareness is better that cure. Grill those meats and prepare your banchans but don’t forget to eat the right amount because it’ll give you heart disease. Follow the safety precautions and orders from the government so we can be able to enjoy happily and not worrying.

Day 365 of 365. Where should I start?

I can’t believe it’s been a year. The moment that I’ve seen you inside the room, talking melodiously. Your ravishing outlook seems like no one could withstand you. So, I thought to myself, how could we be friends? But as the story flows by without noticing, I fell in love with you. This line may be very cliché but when Cupid strikes you, Aphrodite is shaking. I remember my first article in this publication which is a literary named Artikulo 69. It was 4 years ago, and kind of cringeworthy. When you finished falling in love with a certain person, there is a certain “gag” in British term or “Kahihiyan” in Filipino. Here in the Philippines, even things are forgotten in the past, Filipinos will still try to bring back these forgotten things as so called “Nostalgia” factor but most of them are just for giggles. I’ve experienced many times to be called not by my name rather by the name of my ex-crush. “Hoy Reighel, pahingi ng papel!” It means Hi Reighel, can I get a piece of paper? But the person calls me but indirectly, How nice. Comparing my Artikulo series to a tv series, it’ll be To All the People (boys) that I’ve Loved Before. Starring? Me of course. I have no regrets in falling in love with someone, am no John Lloyd Cruz in One More Chance. But looking back these past years, the consistent one is still in the present. If you didn’t read the article last time, well this would be the last that I’ll be creating this kind of literary piece. The Statement of the Problem this time would be, how did I fell in love with you and what should be the possible worst case scenario on how to salvage these feelings?

Section 1, The Fallacies. When falling in love, prepare to be failing to be loved. In every heartbreak, your friends comfort you and tells you that “There is someone who is better, the one who is sustainable in heart and susceptible of damages.” But I think that you’re different but never thought of a possible fruitful relationship. Lastly, Section 4, All About You. As months pass by, I can’t believe we’re down with last month of this school year. I remember seeing you in the hallways last year shouting for “Vote our party list” and now, going to different paths and continuing to the new chapter of our lives. I remember what Ate Jessica told me, “Oh! You both will separate in different ways. You going to senior high and he’s starting to pursue his dreams.” “Well, it’s just a part in our lives where things come and go. I would like to spend more time, but the conflict is so tight” I replied. In the end of every conversation, we need to accept the fact that you’ll be never be loved by the person you love. But keep in mind that things may be favorable if the timing is favorable. Before ending this literary piece, should I say goodbye and accept the fact and be free? Because these articles are written because of you. I realized that to be fully happy without any love related relationships, is to find happiness within. Genuine happiness comes from yourself and living free of doubts, weariness and struggles. I hope we would meet again after the next couple of years. When we’re successful and happy. Gold Ring

Once there was a couple whose names were Damian and Lea, the couple loved each other so dearly to the point that they would do and risk everything just to make their other half happy.

One morning, Damian is cleaning his axe before he set off to work, while his wife is cooking breakfast for the two of them in their old furnace, their life, no doubt is very simple, yet, they consider themselves rich and fortunate, for they are not rich with money and gold, rather, they are rich with their pure genuine love for each other.

After Lea cooked their breakfast, they immediately started to eat and when already finished, Damian kissed his wife and said, “I love you, I will be back before the sun sets, for we will watch the sunset together” Damian told her while looking into her eyes, then, he started to walk out of their house carrying his heavy axe and his motivation to work for his wife’s dream ring into the forest.

When Damian arrived at the forest, he started to look for the biggest tree he could find,

and when he found one, he started to cut it with his axe with just one thing on his mind, that right before the sun sets, he will venture downtown to sell the wood to earn money for his wife’s ring, Until he heard an unusual noise, “pssst! pssst!” Damian turned around to try to see where the sound is coming from, right then he saw a bald man wearing a uniform “What you’re doing is illegal!” the man said, it was not long until he realized that the man was a cop, Damian just shrugged at what the man said and continued to axe the tree, “You’re just giving disasters a bigger chance to destroy people’s houses!” Despite of the cop’s effort in convincing Damian to stop cutting the tree, he still continued as if he didn’t hear anything from him, and when he is finished, he gathered the wood and started to walk to the town. When He arrived downtown, he immediately started to sell his wood to people passing by, fortunately for him, he sold all the wood in just a few minutes. Then he walked to the jewelry store and the first time he laid eyes on a gold ring, he al-

ready knew that his wife is going to love it, so, he bought the ring and started to walk to their house.

When he arrived, he hurriedly called his wife for they will watch the sunset, while the sun slowly sets, he kissed his wife and with a big smile, he wore the ring to his wife’s finger, “This is beautiful Damian! I loved it! Thankyou!” his wife said wearing a big smile and looking at the ring, “because you bought me a beautiful gold ring, I will cook a big dinner for you! I will cook pork!” She said as she started to prepare the ingredients and started to cook it. After they ate dinner, they slept with big smiles in their faces and overflowing love in their hearts for each other.

Morning came, and Damian woke up before his wife, so he cooked breakfast for his wife and started to clean his axe, and when he is going to leave for work, he kissed his wife and whispered to her “I will be back before the sun sets, for we will watch the sunset together” then, he started to walk out of their house, Even though

it’s raining, he still continued to walk into the forest, and as soon as his axe touched the trunk of the tree, a massive wave of soil, rocks and water crashed onto him causing him to be brought to the bottom of the mountain and end up in front of their house just in time before the sun sets, and as soon as he realized what has happened, he bolted to their house which is wrecked and is almost buried in soil and rocks and started searching for his wife, but something caught his attention, and had left him dumbfounded, he found her wife’s golden ring.

Then a cop came, “there was a massive landslide caused by the lack of trees that will sip the water, the soil became moist, and the rocks slid, all of this happened because of humans cutting the tree and not replacing them.”

The cop said, Damian cried holding his wife’s ring onto his chest, every drop of his tears is full of regret, “That’s how it really is, not everything you do out of love is right” said the cop as he started to walk away to the weeping man.

Dear Mind, I met Depression. I don’t know when. He changed my life. I was happy and cheerful before we met.

He was dominant and possessive. There was something about him that I couldn't explain and maybe that was the reason why I got attached. He was manipulative, very manipulative that he started controlling me with the things I loved to do.. and now? I don't really know what I should do. I lost interest in everything and I found myself always bored. He was suffocating me and he was really abusive, but still, I couldn't stay away from him. I was always in my room full of sadness, fear, and emptiness. Asking myself the "Whys" of every time he punches me. He also told me things I didn't know about myself before. After that, I started asking and doubting myself. He also made my self-esteem really low.

And after a few months I met Anxiety. Depression's best friend. She was like Depression but worse. She was talkative and I didn't like it. She used to talk to me 24/7 to the point I couldn't fall asleep every night. She was really negative to be honest that's why I started walking away from her but she kept on following me everywhere I go. She was mentally draining just like Depression. Three days ago, I went to my very close friend named Past. We hanged out and had a very great conversation. She taught me a lot of things and those things made me feel stronger and better. Then after that night, I went home. As soon as I entered my room and opened the lights I saw Depression and Anxiety in bed.

It was the time I realized, I need to free myself.

INTRAMURALS 2019: A DISPLAY OF HARD WORK, INTEGRITY, AND PASSION

How is it to be a student athlete? It takes a lot of perseverance to maintain a proper diet and a healthy body so you can spend almost half of your life in training. But how really is it to be a student athlete?

Whether a player or a spectator, intramurals generate much excitement in the institution. Students find the chance to participate in sports which serves as their escape from the very demanding classroom requirements of their studies.

Spearheaded by the Sports and Athletics Club, the annual and much-awaited Intramurals 2019 with a theme “Consolympics 2019: S.A.L.A.M.A.T LACO” took place last September 2020 at La Consolacion College of Daet, Inc campus.

The much awaited event consisted three categories; grades 7, 8, and 9 in the first category and grades 10, 11, and 12 in the second category. Each category competed in different sports such as basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, chess, dart throwing, Arnis, Taekwondo and other extracurricular events.

On the last day of the intramurals, each winner was given a certificate and medal, garnering all the points of the different events; grades 7 and 10 placed Second Runner up, grades 8 and 12 placed First Runner up, and the Champions of the Intramurals Grade 9 in the first category and Grade 11 in the second category. Each teams showed their hard work, integrity and passion in accomplishing their goals and in making this event successful.

It takes weeks, months, and years before you’d be able to step on a podium with a bouquet of flowers in your hand and of course to have a gold medal lying around your neck.

Swimming, running, and other games that involve skills and strong physical body are sports played by athletes. Athletes also technically have to come to school and do a lot of homework plus more catching up. Sometimes they’re asked to leave their classes for trainings and competitions. Well that’s their job after all. Because what they know and what they can are God’s given talents. As other say, it is the only thing that makes them move forward.

Student athletes can always see their days as tough as they needed to be.

Their sweat is said to be essential as their body work hard.

That hard work may result to mind set that they would always need to win the game.

Good thing about student athletes are they know how to discipline themselves and handle their time very well, for they need to focus on one thing and that is to win.

Win or lose. This is the practice they need to learn, and as long as it makes them happy it will lead them to the place they ever wanted. Those sweats, tears and sometimes bruises are just a challenge but after you took a bite on your own medal, that’s what you call victory because of their hard work. Student athletes are not just an athletes; they are more than just that.

For they study as well to understand that before they get something they want, they must always work hard for it.

CONSOLITES SWIM THEIR WAY TO PALARONG BICOL 2020

La Consolacion College-Daet Consolites once again hit the waters as they achieved victory in the field of swimming last October 9-10, 2019 held at Pineapple Island Resort, Calasgasan Daet Camarines Norte.

The Consolites were part of the Camarines Norte Association of Private Schools (CANAPS) Team together with their coach Ms. Charlotte Pardinez.

For the third time, CANAPS became the Overall Champion in the Secondary Girls Category in swimming, wherein the players got 10 gold, 12 silver, and 9 bronze medals in their individual and relay events.

Riyan Krisa Aquino won the first medal of CANAPS, which is Silver, in the 400-meter freestyle event.

Aquino also won four more silver medals in the following events: 800m Freestyle, 400m Individual Medley, 200m Backstroke, and 50m Backstroke.

In addition to the said feat is the performance of Eimiel Simone Escueta who earned 1st place in 200m

Butterfly, 100m Butterfly, 50m Freestyle and won 2nd place in 200m and 100m Freestyle.

Moreover, Michelle Gae Frias nails her performance in 50m and 200m Breastroke where she bagged two gold medals.

Frias also got 2nd place in 50m Butterfly, 100m Breastroke and won 3rd place in 50m Freestyle.

Sheliza Ly Ivy Cacawa nabbed three gold medals in 50m Backstroke, 50m Butterfly, 200m Backstroke and two silver medals in 100m Backstroke and 200m Individual Medley.

For the CANAPS Secondary Boys Consolites representatives, Moises Oliver Cacawa won a bronze and silver medal for the 100m and 200m Butterfly events, respectively.

Sofian Geoford Ylaran nails all his events for five bronze medals in 50m, 100m, 200m Freestyle, 50m and 100m Backstroke that made him and four of the other Consolites make it to the regionals.

The five CANAPS Swimming Players prepares for the upcoming Palarong Bicol 2020 which will be held at the Province of Camarines Norte.
