Despite the rise of polarizing tendencies in various parts of the world in recent years, virtually no government has been able to stop the power of trade –the direct producer of real wealth, prosperity, and social stability.

Trade and prosperity are natural factors that give rise to the middle classes – one of the trademarks by which societies are considered healthy and stable.

Interestingly, although such an important segment of the population seems to be on the decline in the northern hemisphere, the rise of the middle class in Latin America is an undeniable fact.

Yet, despite the region’s impressive success in this regard during the last two decades, Latin America still has a long way today before it can be considered a truly middle-class society, partly due to great deficiencies in public healthcare and education.

Fortunately, more and more organizations (including LACMA) are launching ambitious initiatives in the areas of continuing education and personnel training. We therefore take this time to motivate all LACMA members to continue supporting the association’s training/educational projects by including the topic in their social responsibility agendas. And the rationale for this is rather simple: any effort in training your personnel today will result in a more prosperous and democratic society tomorrow!

Afortunadamente, cada vez más son las organizaciones (entre ellas, LACMA) que están lanzando ambiciosas iniciativas en las áreas de la educación continua y entrenamiento de personal. Aprovechamos, por ende, esta oportunidad para motivar a todos los miembros LACMA a continuar apoyando los proyectos educativos/de entrenamiento de la asociación, mediante la inclusión del tema en sus agendas de responsabilidad social. Y es que el fundamento de esto es sencillo: todo esfuerzo por entrenar a su personal hoy, ¡redundará en una sociedad más próspera y democrática mañana!

A pesar del ascenso de tendencias polarizantes en distintas partes del mundo en los últimos años, prácticamente ningún gobierno ha podido detener el poder del comercio –el productor directo de la riqueza real, la prosperidad y la estabilidad social.

El comercio y la prosperidad son los factores naturales que dan pie a las clases medias –una de las marcas por las que las sociedades son consideradas sanas y estables. Como dato interesante, aunque dicho segmento de la población parece decrecer en el hemisferio norte, el ascenso de la clase media en Latinoamérica es un hecho innegable.

We are now in the middle of the year! I wish you may all be very busy with lots of work. I also wish to inform you that, for two consecutive weeks in May, we were able to carry out the “Coaching for Packers Instructors” and “Moving from A-Z” on-site seminars in Miami with the satisfaction of all participants, who had the opportunity of obtaining knowledge from the vast experience of LACMA Training Team members, such as Peter Schaefers and Santiago Bosch, in addition to the support of Evelyn de Jaén.

¡Nos encontramos a mitad de año! Deseo que todos se encuentren muy ocupados y con mucho trabajo. Es mi deseo también informarles que, durante dos semanas consecutivas en mayo, en la ciudad de Miami, se llevaron a cabo los seminarios presenciales de “Coaching para Instructores de Embaladores” y “Mudanzas de la A a la Z”, con la satisfacción de todos los participantes, quienes tuvieron la oportunidad de contar con instructores de vasta experiencia del LACMA Training Team, como Peter Schaefers y Santiago Bosch, al igual que con el soporte y apoyo de Evelyn de Jaén.

Your Board of Directors is working on our Strategic Plan through e-boards and Skype conferences. Additionally, along with the Training and Industry Regulations Committee, we are analyzing all that is required to update our seminars.

One of the largest objectives of the Strategic Plan is the improvement of communications between our members. I therefore take this opportunity to remind you of the important role of the designated LACMA CONTACT in your companies. He or she will be the liaison who will divulge the precise information to the appropriate person or area in your business. We kindly ask members who have not yet designated their LACMA CONTACT to get in touch with the office in Panama. We will conduct the first communication test through a designated LACMA CONTACT shortly.

Continuing with our focus on the development of the Strategic Plan, we are closely working on the organization of our 2015 PUNTA DEL ESTE convention. Back in May, our General Manager Evelyn de Jaén, and myself, travelled to Uruguay to meet with local members. We would like to thank the companies, Autogiro, Campo & Hnos., and Uruvan Transport in advance for their disposition. We have visited the hotel and the possible locations for the various activities of the convention’s calendar, in order to see that all participants enjoy a “Natural Uruguay”.

With the purpose of achieving the goal of “Increasing the membership’s participation in the conventions” which is also included in the Strategic Plan, I would like to inform you that, by the time you receive this magazine, Evelyn will be making her first visit to Colombia, the chosen site of our 2016 convention –always with the goal of seeking the best options for our members’ benefit. Please include the 2015 Punta del Este and the 2016 Colombia conventions in your schedules, the approximate dates of which will take place in February and March, respectively.

Con el fin de alcanzar el objetivo de “Incrementar la participación de los miembros en Convenciones”, también plasmado dentro del Plan Estratégico, me gustaría contarles que, al momento que ustedes reciban esta revista, Evelyn estará haciendo su primera visita a Colombia, destino elegido para nuestra convención 2016, siempre con el fin de buscar lo mejor para poder brindárselo a nuestros miembros. Vayan agendando nuestras convenciones de Punta del Este 2015 y Colombia 2016, cuyas fechas aproximadas serán en febrero y marzo, respectivamente.

In mid June, we will hold our regular Board of Directors meeting in Panama City, in order to continue working on the goals of the Strategic Plan, LACMA’s presence in the upcoming IAM convention in Orlando, and our 2015 Punta del Este, Uruguay convention, among other highly important topics for our association.

A mediados de junio, tendremos nuestra usual reunión de Junta Directiva en la ciudad de Panamá para seguir trabajando en los objetivos del Plan Estratégico, la presencia de LACMA en la próxima convención de IAM en Orlando, y nuestra convención 2015 en Punta del Este, Uruguay, entre otros temas de suma importancia para la asociación.

EVELYN DE JAEN Back in May, we were able to hold two on-site seminars in Miami: “Coaching for Packers Instructors,” in Spanish, and “Moving from A-Z,” in English.

Recientemente en mayo, realizamos en Miami dos seminarios presenciales: “Coaching para Instructores de Embaladores”, en español, y “Moving from A-Z”, en inglés.

It is of great satisfaction for us to see the great interest our participants demonstrate each time we offer these on-site seminars.

Although they always nourish themselves with the new knowledge provided to all at the seminars, they also do so from the experiences shared by their colleagues.

Nos satisface mucho ver el gran interés que los participantes demuestran cada vez que realizamos estos seminarios presenciales; siempre se nutren de nuevos conocimientos que se imparten a todos dentro del seminario, pero mucho también de las experiencias que sus colegas comparten.

We would also like to thank the companies for sending their staff members to the seminars! We are sure that, in addition to being valued by their companies, the participants will also become better employees, demonstrating their knowledge and professionalism.

We will be offering these two on-site seminars in Madrid, Spain in September. It will be the first time LACMA offers seminars in a European country, and we’re sure our associate members will know how to take advantage of such a great opportunity.

En septiembre estaremos dictando, en español, estos dos seminarios presenciales en Madrid, España. Será la primera vez que LACMA dicta seminarios en un país europeo. Confiamos en que nuestros miembros asociados sabrán aprovechar esta gran oportunidad.

On another note, we would like to congratulate our past president, Laura Ganon, for her recent election to the FIDI Board of Directors in Singapore. Our congratulations are also extended to Willy Toedtli of TRAFIMAR Mexico for his recent designation as president of OMNI. We wish great success to both, and are sure they will do a great job!

We are also working at the Board and office to improve our beloved association... an ever continuing task. We are currently working with an advisor in order to improve communication with our members, and have designated a “LACMA Contact” at each member company, who will be in charge of divulging our communications to the respective company departments in an efficient and timely manner. As always, we are open to receiving your suggestions, ideas, and any contribution for the good of the association, and appreciate all those who already do so in a very objective manner and with concrete recommendations.

En Junta y en la oficina seguimos trabajando para mejorar nuestra querida asociación… es una tarea continúa. Actualmente, estamos trabajando con un asesor a fin de mejorar las comunicaciones con nuestros miembros. Hemos creado la figura del “LACMA Contact” en cada empresa miembro, a fin de que nuestras comunicaciones se diseminen a los respectivos departamentos de sus empresas de manera eficaz y a tiempo. Como siempre, estamos abiertos a recibir sugerencias, ideas y cualquier aporte para bien de la asociación y agradecemos a aquellos que, muy objetivamente y con recomendaciones concretas, ya lo hacen.

And the preparations for our next destination, Punta del Este Uruguay –LACMA 2015—are already under way. We will hold our next convention February 23-26, 2015, and hope to see all of you at what is often called the “Switzerland of Latin America!”

South America’s Bioceanic Corridor project gains momentum

Members of the Infrastructure, Transport, Energy Resources, Agriculture, Livestock, and Fishing Commission of Mercosur’s Parliament (Parlasur) recently met in Santiago with Alberto Undurraga Vicuña, Chile’s Public Works Minister to discuss the Bio-oceanic Corridor Project, among other topics.

This mega-project was included in the agenda of the latest meeting held between the presidents of Argentina, Cristina Fernández, and Chile, Michelle Bachelet, in May. The project is expected to be ratified by Chilean authorities in order to allow the creation of a direct link between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, which would offer a major opportunity for trade and tourism, not only for Argentina and Chile, but also for other Mercosur’s countries.

The Infrastructure Commission attending the meeting with the Chilean Minister was presided by Paraguayan legislator Mirtha Palacios, who was accompanied by lawmakers Laura Moreno (Argentina), José Alfredo Ureña (Venezuela), Júlio Campos (Brazil), and Ricardo Canese and Zacarías Vera Cárdenas (Paraguay).

Los miembros de la Comisión de Infraestructura, Transporte, Recursos Energéticos, Agricultura, Pecuaria y Pesca del Parlamento del Mercosur (Parlasur), se reunieron recientemente en la ciudad de Santiago de Chile con el Ministro de Obras Públicas de ese país, Alberto Undurraga Vicuña, para discutir, entre otros temas, el Proyecto del Corredor Bioceánico.

La mega-obra de integración figuró en la agenda de la última reunión realizada entre las presidentas de Argentina, Cristina Fernández, y de Chile, Michelle Bachelet, realizada a principios de mayo.

Se espera que el proyecto sea ratificado por parte de las autoridades chilenas, para permitir avances en la vinculación directa entre los océanos Atlántico y Pacífico, conformando una oportunidad importante para el comercio y el turismo, no sólo para Argentina y Chile, sino también para otros países integrantes del Mercosur.

La Comisión de Infraestructura que asistió a la reunión con el Ministro chileno estuvo presidida por la parlamentaria paraguaya, Mirtha Palacios, y los parlamentarios Laura Moreno (Argentina), José Alfredo Ureña (Venezuela), Júlio Campos (Brasil), Ricardo Canese y Zacarías Vera Cárdenas (Paraguay).

The Aconcagua Bioceanic Corridor entails the construction of a railroad route that would represent a physical and commercial link between the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of South America via the Andes –an investment of approximately 3 billion dollars.

The project proposes a fundamental solution for growth in the region, and expects to have a strong impact on the expansion of the region’s economies, of the nations involved, and on the well-being of their resdents.

El Corredor Bioceánico del Aconcagua encierra la construcción de una vía férrea que representaría un vínculo físico y comercial entre las costas del Atlántico y Pacífico de Suramérica a través de Los Andes –una inversión de aproximadamente 3,000 millones de dólares.

El proyecto propone una solución fundamental para el crecimiento de la región, y espera ejercer un fuerte impacto sobre la expansión de las economías de la región, las naciones involucradas, y sobre el bienestar de sus residentes.

Proyecto de CORREDOR BIOCEÁNICO SURAMERICANO cobra fuerza

strengthening of the countries of Latin America as a whole,” said Argentinean lawmaker Laura Montero, who added that “Chile is a major protagonist in the development of Mercosur’s Bioceanic Corridor, which is fundamental for fostering inter-zone trade.”

On her part, Paraguayan legislator Mirtha Palacios stressed that the Bioceanic Corridor would “facilitate the free circulation of freight and passenger vehicles in a region ranging from Bolivia to Chile, passing through all of Mercosur’s countries.”

The Bioceanic Corridor is an initiative that seeks the construction of a railroad route through the Andes, linking the localities of Luján de Cuyo in Mendoza, Argentina, to Los Andes, in Chile’s V Region.

According to the project’s feasibility studies, the demand for trade in the region is expected to double in coming decades, reaching the 10-million ton mark by 2020, and over 30 million tons by 2040. Such a forecast has prompted local and international authorities to seek a long-term solution to the scarcity of overland transport in the area.

“Confiamos en consolidar la estrategia de vinculación territorial para el fortalecimiento de los países latinoamericanos en su conjunto”, manifestó Laura Montero, parlamentaria argentina, a lo que agregó que “Chile es un protagonista importante en el desarrollo del Corredor Bioceánico Mercosur, el cual es fundamental para potenciar el comercio intrazona”.

Por su parte, la parlamentaria paraguaya, Mirtha Palacios, destacó que el Corredor Bioceánico “facilitaría la libre circulación de vehículos para transporte y mercaderías, que abarca desde Bolivia y pasa por todos los países del Mercorsur hasta Chile”.

El Corredor Bioceánico es una iniciativa que busca la creación de un cruce ferroviario en la Cordillera de los Andes, uniendo las localidades de Luján de Cuyo, en Mendoza, Argentina, con Los Andes, en la V región de Chile.

Los estudios de viabilidad del Proyecto estiman que para 2020 se duplicará la demanda de comercio hasta superar los 10 millones de toneladas, mientras que en 2040 podría llegar a más de 30 millones de toneladas. LACMA CONTACT Opening new communication channels

Abriendo Nuevos Canales de Comunicación With the goal of improving communications between the association and its member companies, LACMA has launched a new concept: the LACMA Contact.

In this program, each member company should choose a person as the receptor of all communications issued by LACMA, being responsible for reading, analyzing, and distributing said information to the respective departments or persons to whom the communications are addressed.

The LACMA Contact will play a very important role in the improvement of the communication flow between your company and our association. We therefore request that this person be selected for his/her communication qualities, innovation, positivism, and excellent disposition, in order allow the information issued by LACMA to reach and be delivered to the various company departments and staff members with efficiency and expediency.

A number of companies have not yet provided the name and e-mail address of their LACMA Contacts. We therefore request those that haven’t done so to send this information to LACMA’s Secretariat, in order to be contacted by the association and receive more information on the role’s importance.

As recent social protests in Chile and Brazil, as well as a more profound look at the numbers reveal, the region is far from achieving a stable, sunny middle-class status. As with any process of development, Latin America’s positive signals from the past two decades have brought new challenges.

Is it time for the middle class in Latin America?

Recently, the World Bank released statistics revealing, for the first time in history, that by 2016 Latin America’s middle classes will outnumber the region’s poor. For a region that has been marked by exclusion, poverty and inequality this is no small matter. The rise of this arriviste class comes from more than two decades of sound macroeconomic policies that have allowed economies to grow, held inflation in the single digits in most countries, reduced public sector deficits, increased public and private sector savings, and contributed to the growth of employment.

Across the region 34.3 percent of the population in Latin America is now in the middle class, according to the World Bank report. The bar line it uses (those who earn more than $10 per day), while imperfect, shows the diversity of economies south of the U.S. border. Countries in South America’s Southern Cone have performed the best in terms of the last two decades of social mobility. Among those in the Southern Cone, Brazil excelled, adding 50 million people to the country’s bourgeoisie, and Uruguay and Chile have also done well. In contrast, Central America and Mexico have struggled to reduce poverty.

These changes have implications beyond the laudable and historic reduction of the region’s poor. For one, the growth of the middle class has created a new consumer class with savings, access to credit, and a demand for basic durables, like washing machines and services like banking. For another, the emergence of a politically aware and active middle class has prompted innovations in policymaking and governance, not only at the federal level or in the capital cities, but in Medellin, Colombia; Curitiba, Brazil; and Monterrey, Mexico, to list just a few examples.

But as recent social protests in Chile and Brazil, and a deeper look at the numbers reveal, the region is far from achieving a stable, sunny middle-class status. As with any process of development, Latin America’s positive signals from the past two decades have brought new challenges.

The measure of $10 per day as an income-based metric conceals a number of problems. First, the baseline does not include funda-

Second, the rising tide in Latin America has not lifted all boats equally. The region’s history of ethnic and racial exclusion still weighs heavily on even the impressive social mobility that occurred over the past two decades. To cite only a few examples, in Brazil, while 76.4 percent of school age children of European descent are enrolled on secondary school, there are only 65.3 percent of those of primarily Afro or indigenous extraction enrolled.

In Chile, 97 percent of families of more European extraction have access to adequate housing, but only 74.4 percent of those of more African or Indigenous extraction have the same benefits.

And last there is Mexico, where 44.3 percent of the non-indige-

The business climate in Latin America has improved in recent months, climbing from 88 points in October to reach the 95-point mark in January, its best level since July of 2013, according to the Economic Climate Index (ICE) for Latin America, organized by Fundación Getulio Vargas and the Economic Studies Institute (IFO) of the University of Munich. Calculated with the quarterly survey of 141 specialists in 18 countries, the Economic Climate Index measures the business environment and the economic activity (present and future expectations). For Fundación Getulio Vargas, 9 of the 11 countries analyzed exhibited a favorable climate for business; in other words, indexes of over 100 points. These are: Bolivia (124 points), Chile (104 puntos), Colombia (138 puntos), Ecuador (107 puntos), Mexico (103 puntos), Paraguay (140 points), Perú (132 points) and Uruguay 100 points). On the other hand, the countries with unfavorable situations were Argentina (77 points), Brazil (88 points), and Venezuela (20 points).

High-speed train seeks to

link Asia TO

the New World

According to the Beijing Times, China plans to develop a high-speed railway system which would provide direct access to the United States.

Experts believe the route could be completed in two days with an average speed of 350 km per hour, to cover a total of 13,000 kilometers.

To date, the train’s prototype possesses three times the capacity of a passenger jet, and is six times faster than the world’s fastest train.

The project is currently in its political negotiation and feasibility phases, with its creators hoping that, if positive results are obtained in both cases, China would be entirely responsible of financing and building the trans-continental railroad.

According to the information revealed so far, the new route would pass through Siberia, Russia in order to reach the Bering Strait, an obstacle that would be overcome through the construction of a tunnel. The route would then continue through Canada to its final destination in the United States.

According to Wang Mengshu, an engineer of the State-run Chinese Engineering Academy and one of the most renowned Chinese railroad experts, the project’s main challenge is undoubtedly the Bering Strait, but also stated that China has the

necessary equipment to overcome this possible inconvenience.

A number of speculating voices also believe that the main purpose of such an ambitious project would be the transport of goods, more so than to foster the movement of passengers.

Hasta el momento, el prototipo posee tres veces la capacidad de un jet de pasajeros, y supera seis veces al tren más veloz del mundo.

Según los datos trascendidos, la ruta del nuevo tren atravesaría Siberia, en Rusia, hasta alcanzar el estrecho de Bering, cruzando el océano a través de un túnel, para volver a la superficie en Alaska, ingresar a su destino final, Estados Unidos, cruzando Canadá.

Los expertos estiman que la ruta se cubriría en dos días, a una velocidad promedio de 350 kilómetros por hora, realizando un recorrido total de 13.000 kilómetros.

A two-week strike by workers expanding the Panama Canal has ended in early May after both parties reached an agreement in regards to wage increases.

The strike at the Canal was part of a nationwide labor dispute which prompted authorities to grant workers an 11 percent raise this year and further increases over the next three years, according to Saúl Mendez, secretary general of the construction workers’ union, Suntracs.

The strike was the second mayor delay this year in the quest to add a third set of locks to the canal –a five-year project originally scheduled for completion in 2014, and which, ac-

cording to Canal authorities, is now expected to conclude in early 2016.

Back in February, the Panama Canal Authority and international consortium, “Unidos por el Canal” (comprising Spain’s Sacyr and Italy’s Salini Impregilo) signed a deal to end a major dispute which halted works for weeks.

The dispute began on Jan. 1, when the consortium said it would halt construction unless the Panama Canal Authority agreed to split the cost of the overruns. The authority, however, accused the consortium of violating its contractual obligations, five years after making the winning $3.1 billion bid for the contract to add a third set of locks to the waterway.

The voice of

experience (Part II) What was the scariest moment in your entire career? How was it overcome?

I think taking on the role of president of IAM (then HHGFAA) in 1997 was the scariest moment of my career. Since joining the industry in 1969, I had worked in just about every position in the moving business, but had never actually worked for— much less run—a trade association. HHGFAA at the time was almost bankrupt and didn’t even have enough money in the bank to pay my salary, let alone the other staff and operational expenses such as rent and telephone.

Close business associates were warning me that the association would disappear within a year or two because of the reengineering and elimination of freight forwarders from the U.S. military moving program; others predicted that we would be absorbed by the American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA), which had just been formed that same year through the merger of the National Moving and Storage Association (NMSA) and the American Moving Council (AMC).

I chose to step down as president of a large diversified moving and logistics group where I had nearly 200 employees and two secretaries in order to take on the revitalization and repurposing of HHGFAA. It was scary, but at that particular point in my life I knew I needed a personal change and a new challenge, even if it meant essentially working without a net.

I overcame any fear of tackling that daunting task by relying on my personal instincts. I came to the job with a plan to take my time, get to know the members and their needs, and develop a network of industry mentors whose counsel, judgment and recommendations I could trust. It seems to have worked, 36

¿Cuál fue el momento en el que sintió más temor en toda su carrera? ¿Cómo lo venció?

Creo que mi asenso al cargo de presidente de IAM (HHGFAA, en aquel entonces) en 1997 fue el momento en que sentí el mayor temor en toda mi carrera. Desde que llegué a la industria en 1969, había trabajado en prácticamente cada posición de la industria de las mudanzas, pero nunca había laborado –y mucho menos dirigido—una asociación gremial. En aquel momento la HHFFAA estaba casi en bancarrota y no tenía suficiente dinero en el banco para pagar mi salario, mucho menos para gastos de otros miembros del personal y operativos, como alquiler y teléfono.

Algunas personas cercanas a mí involucradas en el mundo de los negocios advertían que la asociación desaparecería dentro de uno o dos años, debido a la reingeniería y eliminación de las firmas consolidadoras de carga del programa de mudanzas de las fuerzas armadas de EE.UU. Otros predijeron que seríamos absorbidos por la American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA), que acababa de establecerse ese mismo año mediante una fusión de la National Moving and Storage Association (NMSA) y el American Moving Council (AMC).

Escogí renunciar al cargo de presidente del gran grupo de mudanzas y logística diversificado en el que tenía 200 empleados a mi cargo y dos secretarias, todo con el fin de asumir la revitalización y el reenfoque de HHGFAA. El paso fue aterrador, pero en ese preciso momento de mi vida, sabía que necesitaba un cambio personal y un nuevo desafío, aún si significara básicamente trabajar sin protección.

Vencí cualquier temor de abordar aquel gigantesco reto confiando en mis instintos personales. Llegué al puesto con un plan de

because here I am, seventeen years later, still president of IAM, which is vibrant and growing.

What makes you angry?

I use to get angry a lot. However, my battle with cancer just over a decade ago gave me a whole new perspective on what’s actually worth getting angry about. Moreover, I resolved a long time ago that I would not give someone else or a situation that much power over me. When faced with a potentially shortfuse situation, I ask myself: Is this going to matter a week, a month or a year from now?

Usually the answer is no; therefore, it’s not worth losing my cool. Besides, there are few situations that time, money and attention can’t remedy.

I do tend to get upset or at least defensive when someone attacks or disparages one of my staff. I know how member-focused and driven they are; so when someone takes issue with them I’m pretty quick to get involved.

I may not get angry, but I will defend the honor of my staff and the reputation of the Association.

If you were given the option to relocate to a foreign country, which would you choose?

I haven’t traveled all over the world, but have a pretty good idea it would be to Canada— specifically Vancouver, British Columbia.

The first time I visited Vancouver I knew it had everything I could ask for. The residents speak English and the culture is very similar to ours in the United States. Boating and outdoor sports are my passions. From downtown Vancouver you can walk a mile in any direction and run into a marina full of boats. And the great outdoors is right there, ready to explore and enjoy.

Your greatest pleasure?

Personally: It is spending quality time with the friends and neighbors I’ve known for the past fifty years.

Professionally: It is planning and orchestrating the IAM Annual Meeting and Expo. Most people have no idea how much time and effort my staff and I devote to ensuring that everyone’s expectations are met year after year.

You can only imagine what a pleasure it is to hear, “That was the best IAM meeting ever!”

Your greatest dream?

In my life I have a fantastic woman (my fiancée Laura); a wonderful and rewarding career; and lifelong friends in almost every country in the world—so I think I’m living my greatest dream right now!

tomarme tiempo, conocer a los miembros y sus necesidades, y desarrollar una red de mentores de la industria en cuyo consejo, juicio y recomendaciones pudiese confiar. Parece haber funcionado porque aquí estoy, diecisiete años más tarde, siendo todavía el presidente de IAM, que es un ente vibrante y creciente. ¿Qué le hace sentir enojado?

Solía enojarme mucho. Sin embargo, mi batalla contra el cáncer hace más de una década me dio una nueva perspectiva sobre lo que vale la pena que me cause enojo. Más aún, decidí hace mucho tiempo que no le daría a ninguna persona o situación mucho poder sobre mí. Cuando me encuentro frente a una situación potencialmente explosiva, me pregunto: ¿valdrá esto la pena dentro de una semana, un mes, o dentro de un año? Normalmente la respuesta es no; por ende, no vale la pena perder mi tranquilidad. Además, existen pocas situaciones que el tiempo, el dinero y la atención no puedan solucionar.

Tiendo, en efecto, a enojarme o a ponerme a la defensiva cuando alguien ataca o menosprecia a mi personal. Sé lo enfocados en el equipo y lo motivados que son, por lo que cuando alguien desea meterse con ellos, me involucro en el asunto rápidamente. Tal vez no me enoje, pero defenderé el honor de mi equipo y la reputación de la Asociación. ¿Si tuviese la opción de mudarse a un país extranjero, cual escogería?

No he viajado por todo el mundo, pero tengo la seguridad de que sería a Canadá, especialmente a Vancouver, Columbia Británica.

La primera vez que visité Vancouver sabía que tenía todo lo que podría desear. Sus residentes hablan inglés y la cultura es muy similar a la nuestra en Estados Unidos. La navegación recreativa y los deportes al aire libre son mis pasiones. Desde el centro de Vancouver es posible caminar una milla en cualquier dirección y toparse con una marina llena de yates. Y los vastos espacios al aire libre están allí mismo, listos para ser explorados y disfrutados. ¿Su mayor placer?

Personal: Pasar tiempo de calidad con los amigos y vecinos a quienes he conocido durante los últimos cincuenta años.

Profesional: Planear y dirigir la Reunión y Exposición Anual de IAM. La mayoría de las personas no tienen idea del tiempo y esfuerzo que dedicamos mi equipo y yo para asegurar que las expectativas de todos se llenen, año tras año. Ustedes sólo pueden imaginar lo placentero que es escuchar, “¡Esa fue la mejor reunión IAM de la historia!” ¿Su mayor sueño?

En mi vida, tengo a una mujer fantástica (Laura, mi prometida); una maravillosa y gratificante carrera, y amigos de toda la vida en prácticamente cada país del mundo –por lo que ¡creo estar viviendo mi mayor sueño ahora mismo!

Donation

For the children of San Alfonso María de Ligorio Through its LACMASOS program, LACMA has recently donated US$5,000 to the children’s food kitchen program managed by Peru’s San Alfonso María de Ligorio parish.

The donation was used to purchase utensils and appliances such as a 2 refrigerators, a freezer and blenders, 2 stoves.

The San Alfonso María de Ligorio parish is located in the Santa Anita district in eastern Lima, and has been run by Redemptorists missionaries since its beginnings.

The parish’s food kitchen program for children started in 1996 with the establishment of the “José Luis Fernández” kitchen in 1996. Other kitchens were created afterwards to cater to the underprivileged children from broken homes, comprised mainly by migrants from central and southern regions of Peru (Junín, Huancayo, Cerro de Pasco, Ayacucho, Puno, Huancavelica). The average age of the heads of these households (mainly women) ranges between 25 and 40.

Approximately 450 boys, girls, and teenagers ages 3-16 are served by the program on a daily basis, in addition to a small group of elderly citizens.

A través de su programa LACMASOS, LACMA donó recientemente US$5,000 al programa de comedores infantiles administrado por la parroquia San Alfonso María de Ligorio de Perú. La donación fue utilizada para la compra de utensilios y equipos como 2 refrigeradoras, una congeladora y licuadoras, y 2 estufas.

La parroquia San Alfonso María de Ligorio se encuentra en el distrito de Santa Anita, al este de Lima, y ha sido regentado por misioneros Redentoristas desde sus inicios.

El programa de comedores infantiles de la parroquia inició en 1996 con el establecimiento del comedor “José Luis Fernández” en 1996. Otros comedores fueron creados posteriormente para atender a niños de escasos recursos provenientes de hogares disfuncionales, compuestos en su mayoría por migrantes de las regiones central y sur de Perú (Junín, Huancayo, Cerro de Pasco, Ayacucho, Puno, Huancavelica).

La edad promedio de las cabezas de dichos hogares (mujeres, principalmente) oscila entre los 25 y 40 años.

Aproximadamente 450 niños, niñas y adolescentes de 3 a 16 años de edad son atendidos diariamente por el programa, además de un pequeño grupo de ancianos.

PRESIDENT Miguel Florez - Aviomar, S.A. - Colombia The time it takes to mature and divulge an idea nowadays is virtually nothing, compared to the recent past. The use of technology has arrived in our industry, a fact that prompts me to invite our members to use technology for the benefit of our sector.

Until a couple of years ago, digitalized inventories were considered both surreal and costly, whereas complex monitoring and vehicle tracking systems through GPS and ERP were exclusive commodities of multinational companies. However, if massification has granted us access to these technologies in a low-cost and grand-scale manner, why aren’t we using them to our advantage? At past seminars, we have shared with you a number of experiences in this regard, and we’ve also discovered that many of us still use technologies which were once efficient, but are rather obsolete nowadays.

Our day-to-day activities often hinder us from being farsighted.

I therefore invite LACMANext members to promote the use of technology in our companies, as this demonstrates professionalism and makes our processes more efficient. It is necessary, nevertheless, to touch the subject as a long-term project that would include planning, execution, and monitoring, as the opposite would result in failure and waste of money. It is this type of experiences that prompts businesses to give up the idea prior to actually launching it, thus only benefiting technology providers; however, just as in any other field, the implementation of technology entails breaking paradigms, and this is where we can provide assistance. Who knows? Perhaps we’ll engage in a tele-transported move operation in the future!

On another note, we wish to inform you that we continue working on our CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) program for next year, and would like to thank all of those who have shown interest in supporting us or have informed us about any programs we can provide assistance to. In the meantime, we are working to repeat the Costa Rican experience in Montevideo, with the participation of a lot more volunteers. We will shortly offer additional details which will allow you to both coordinate your schedules and help us in a timely manner!

Lastly, we wish the best of lucks to the teams that were taking part in the Soccer World Cup as this issue went to press. May they give the best of themselves on the field! And to the rest of you, soccer fans and non-fans alike, we wish an excellent and productive summer!

Hoy en día, el proceso de madurar y divulgar una idea compleja toma tiempos que en el pasado reciente serían inimaginables. El uso de la tecnología ya ha entrado en nuestra industria, y es la invitación que hago a nuestros miembros, para que usen esa tecnología en pro de nuestro sector.

Hasta hace un par de años, los inventarios digitalizados eran algo irreal y costoso, mientras que los sistemas de monitoreo complejos y los de trazabilidad de vehículos con GPS, ERPs eran algo exclusivo de las multinacionales. Pero, si la masificación nos ha permitido tener acceso a la tecnología de manera económica y a gran escala, entonces ¿por qué no la usamos en nuestro favor? Durante los pasados seminarios, hemos compartido experiencias en ese sentido y nos hemos encontrado que aún se utilizan métodos que en su momento fueron eficientes, pero que tal vez ahora no lo son tanto.

Muchas veces el día a día no nos permite ver más allá. Invito, por ende, a los miembros LACMANext para que incentivemos el uso de tecnologías en nuestras empresas, ya que esto demuestra profesionalismo y hace más eficiente nuestros procesos. No obstante, es preciso abordar el tema como un proyecto a largo plazo que incluya planeación, ejecución y verificación; de lo contrario, será un proyecto frustrado y un gasto de dinero. Es por ese tipo de experiencias que las empresas desisten muchas veces antes de comenzar, y solo favorecen a los proveedores de estas tecnologías, pero como en todo campo existen paradigmas que romper, y es allí donde podemos aportar. ¿Quién sabe? Quizás en el futuro tengamos una mudanza por teletransportación.

Por otro lado, deseamos informarles que continuamos trabajando en nuestro programa de RSC (Responsabilidad Social Corporativa) para el otro año. Gracias a aquellos que nos han manifestado su interés de apoyarnos o que nos han enviado programas para apoyar. Por ahora estamos trabajando para poder ofrecer una experiencia similar a la de Costa Rica en Montevideo, pero involucrando a muchos más voluntarios. En breve estaremos brindando detalles adicionales para que, con anticipación, coordinen la agenda y ¡nos ayuden!

The new generation raises its voice

Mention three things Mexico has improved in that you would tell the world about?

Since the first time I visited Mexico, I’ve seen a great change in the attitude of the new generation compared to that of the previous ones.

For example, I remember how ten years ago a lot of people used to throw trash on the streets, but now I see children between the ages of five and eight asking their parents to make proper use of the trash cans.

Respect for one’s city and country is basic for the development of their people. In addition, thanks to a lot of pressure from the U.S., the new generation is demonstrating more aversion towards corruption. I don’t want to say we have overcome it 100%, but we have definitely improved a lot in this regard. Lastly, more and more Mexicans are taking advantage of public education, and the quality of said education is improving. Whenever we interview candidates for administrative positions, for example, they are generally well-trained professionals. Even packers are speaking English more often nowadays. Their effort and willingness to learn are incredible!

Your greatest desire?

I love what I do. There are a lot of people who work shifts and positions they don’t like. I hope to always enjoy the activities I´m engaged in.

The most uncomfortable truth you’ve had to tell anybody?

Sometime ago, there was an explosion aboard a ship that carried one of our containers. Due to the poor information provided by the shipping agent, I decided to call the client to explain that his container could not be found, and that we had no clue in regards to its location or condition.

I also had to explain him about the Gross Damage concept. At the end, the container was found and delivered to the client. Its contents were dry and in good condition, even a few months later!

How can young people give a positive twist to the industry in the next 5 years?

Energy and their ability to learn have always been a plus for young people. We also exhibit a level of confidence that basically no one can take away from us. Nowadays, with so many systems like FIDI and ISO, and through other auto-evaluation methods we are able to take more risks

and known whether an idea would work or not faster than before. In the past, one had to wait some time to learn the results. Such time is getting shorter time after time.

Define yourself in three words?

I am myself.

The latest book you’ve read?

“Los detectives salvajes”, by Roberto Bolaño. It took me a lot of effort, but it was worthwhile to get to the end. It is a fantastic book indeed!

An event that has made you angry?

The judge in charge of my wedding arrived at the ceremony an hour late, and did not call nor gave an apology.

It was, nevertheless, the happiest day of my life.

Which do you think are the main characteristics that make this generation different from the rest?

It seems to me that this generation is one of rebels, like the hippies of the 60s and 70s. We have the ability of using technology, in addition to the determination and confidence to change things. Hippies had their guitars and flowers. We have Twitter, cell phones, and more!

Three ways of being proactive in a work team?

It is important to take the opinions of all members into account. If everybody agrees with an opinion 100% (in terms of its execution, implementation, etc.), then something is not right. At least one member is not offering his point of view in such a case. We need to remember we are all different, and that we therefore need to take advantage of our diversity.

Likewise, we need to have a well-defined goal. If we don’t know our objective, how can we reach there?

What have you liked or disliked the most of LACMANext?

I did not like the lack of participation in projects like “Techo;” however, during the convention in Costa Rica, Miguel Florez and the rest of the group were able to organize an incredible opportunity to work hand in hand with the residents of a lowincome community. During this activity we were able to spend two days helping with the construction of a water filter system. I am happy that LACMANext has taken the path of community involvement.

¿Tres cosas que le dirías al mundo que México ha superado?

Desde la primera vez que visité México, he visto un gran cambio en la actitud de la nueva generación, comparado con las generaciones anteriores. Por ejemplo, me acuerdo que hace diez años, mucha gente tiraba su basura a la calle pero, ahora veo a niños de entre cinco y ocho años rogándoles a sus padres que no tiren algo fuera del basurero. El respeto por su ciudad y su país es fundamental para el desarrollo de la población. También, los de la nueva generación, gracias a mucha presión de los EEUU, están demostrando más aversión a la corrupción. No quiero decir que lo hemos superado al cien por ciento, pero hemos mejorado muchísimo en ese aspecto. Por último, más y más mexicanos están aprovechando la educación pública y dicha educación pública va mejorando. Por ejemplo, cuando entrevistamos a candidatos de puestos administrativos, éstos son, por lo general, gente muy preparada.

Hasta los empacadores hablan cada vez más inglés. ¡Su esfuerzo y deseo de aprender son increíbles! ¿Tu más grande anhelo?

A mí me encanta lo que hago. Hay muchas personas que trabajan en turnos y en puestos que no les gustan. Ojalá siempre me gusten las actividades a las que me dedico. ¿La verdad más incómoda que has tenido que decir?

Una vez hubo una explosión en un buque con uno de nuestros contenedores.

Debido a la falta de información proporcionada por la naviera, tuve que llamar al cliente para decirle que se había perdido su contenedor y que no sabíamos ni dónde estaba ni sus condiciones. Tuve que explicarle el concepto de Gran Daño. Al final encontraron su contenedor y se lo entregamos. ¡Todo estaba seco y de buenas condiciones después de unos meses! ¿De qué manera los jóvenes pueden darle un giro positivo a la industria en los próximos 5 años?

La energía y la capacidad de aprender siempre ha sido un beneficio para los jóvenes. También tenemos una confianza que poca gente nos puede quitar. Hoy en día, con tantos sistemas como FIDI e ISO, y otras maneras de autoevaluarnos, podemos tomar más riesgos y saber más rápido si nos funcionará cierta idea o no. En el pasado, se tenía que esperar algún tiempo

para conocer los resultados. Ese tiempo de espera se está haciendo cada vez más corto. ¿Defínete en 3 palabras?

Yo soy yo. ¿El último libro que leíste?

“Los detectives salvajes”, por Roberto Bolaño. Me costó mucho trabajo pero valió la pena llegar al final. ¡Un libro fantástico! ¿Hecho que te ha producido indignación?

La juez de mi boda llegó casi una hora tarde a la ceremonia y nunca nos llamó ni nos pidió disculpas. Pero aún así fue el día más feliz de mi vida. Vemos hoy en día que los jóvenes están dando la cara por sus países en diferentes aspectos, ya sea político, económico o social, ¿Cuáles crees que son las principales características de esta generación que los hace diferentes a las demás?

Esta generación me parece una de rebeldes, como los hippies de los 60s y 70s. Tenemos la capacidad de utilizar la tecnología y nuestra determinación y confianza para efectuar cambios. Los hippies tenían sus guitarras y flores. ¡Nosotros tenemos Twitter, celulares y más!

¿Tres maneras de ser proactivo en un equipo de trabajo?

Hay que tomar en cuenta la opinión de todos. Si todos están 100% de acuerdo con una opinión (con su ejecución, implementación, etc.), algo no está bien.

Por lo menos un miembro no está ofreciendo su punto de vista en dicho caso.

Debemos recordar que todos somos diferentes, por lo que hay que aprovechar de nuestra diversidad. Asimismo, hay que tener una meta bien definida.

Si no conoces tu objetivo, ¿cómo puedes llegar a él? ¿Lo que más y lo que menos te ha gustado de LACMANext?

Lo que no me gustó tanto fue la falta de participación en proyectos como “Techo”. Pero en la convención de Costa Rica, Miguel Florez y los demás programaron una oportunidad increíble para poder trabajar codo con codo con los habitantes de un pueblo de bajos recursos. En dicha actividad, pasamos dos días apoyando la construcción de un sistema de filtración de agua. Me alegra que hayamos decidido en LACMA NEXT tomar el camino de la participación con la comunidad.

I started working for Hilldrup as a summer job while attending the University of Virginia.

Is this an industry in which you would like to retire? Please explain.

I haven’t decided yet, but I will admit I’ve been involved in the industry longer than I expected, it’s a little bit addicting.

What was your first impression of the members of LACMANext?

Everyone that I have met so far has been incredibly nice, it’s been great getting to know them.

What has been the greatest challenge you’ve faced in your career so far?

I believe it was being in charge of Mudanzas Mundiales Costa Rica’s Quality Control System, a role that involved updating and improving the company’s processes, a fact that allowed the company to successfully maintain the ISO 9001:2008 certification back in April.

Somewhere you would never go? Why? Any tropical forest where poisonous snakes abound, since snakes are the third most lethal animal type, after humans and mosquitos.

Three steps LACMANext needs to take in order to continue its mission in the industry? a. To motivate the young people’s interest in joining the group and making it grow continuously.

What can we expect from the young generation of the industry in the next five years?

Commitment, leadership, a desire for continuous improvement, honesty, and lots of work.

A personality you would love to move?

Zinedine Zidane, my favorite all-time soccer player.

b. To include, as much as possible, the ideas provided by all members in order to obtain new perspectives that could help LACMANext to achieve its goals in a constant manner, and not only during conventions.

If you had to produce a “selfie” that would be re-twitted to millions of people around the world, who would you invite to appear with you?

Pope John Paul II, whom I consider to be a true role model.

What’s the most unbelievable thing of today’s world reality?

The poverty levels around the world and terrorism.

Two key ways of being useful in a work team?

Communication is key in a work team, as well as taking into account the ideas of those who work with us, in addition to learning or listening to others.

Effective leadership. If we don’t have a leader, no one would be there to take important decisions that would lead the company to success. The leader, however, should substantiate major decisions with work and research, in addition to being someone who transmits positive thoughts to his work team.

Your favorite quote?

“Your time is limited. So, don’t waist it living someone else’s life.” – Steve Jobs.

Creo que ha sido estar a cargo del Sistema de Gestión de Calidad de Mudanzas Mundiales Costa Rica actualizando y mejorando los procesos de la empresa, logrando así, satisfactoriamente mantener la certificación ISO 9001:2008 recientemente efectuada en abril. ¿3 grandes pasos que debe dar LACMANext para continuar con su misión dentro de la industria como el rostro joven de las mudanzas? a. Captar el interés de nuevas generaciones para que formen parte de este grupo y cada vez crezca más. b. Involucrar, en la medida de lo posible, los aportes de todos los miembros, con el fin de obtener nuevas perspectivas e ideas que puedan ayudar a alcanzar los objetivos de LACMANext de forma constante, y no solamente durante las convenciones. c. Sao Paulo and its traffic congestion The Brazilian city of Sao Paulo, the most populated urban area of South America with 19 million inhabitants, recently experienced its largest traffic jam on record, measuring 720 kilometers of slow traffic.

The measurement, made by the MapLink Internet site, which since 2003 uses data provided by sensors installed in 800 vehicles to measure traffic in Sao Paulo, surpassed the 724-kilometer record established in October of 2011.

The record was also measured by data provided by the city’s Traffic Engineering Company (CET) which, calculating the traffic of the main thoroughfares, registered 261 kilometers of slow movement, compared to the 258 kilometers registered on April 17.

Sao Paulo y su Tráfico Congestionado La ciudad brasileña de Sao Paulo, la más poblada de Sudamérica con 19 millones de habitantes, vivió recientemente el mayor congestionamiento del que se tiene registro con 729 kilómetros de tráfico lento.

La medición, hecha por el sitio en internet MapLink, que desde 2003 emplea datos de localizadores instalados en 800 vehículos para medir el tráfico en la capital paulista, superó a los 724 kilómetros contabilizados en octubre de 2011.

El récord también se produjo según los datos de la municipal Compañía de Ingeniería de Tráfico (CET) que, contabilizando sólo el tránsito de las principales vías, registró 261 kilómetros de lentitud frente a los 258 kilómetros del pasado 17 de abril.

The Hilldrup – Decapack Exchange A double success!

Last April, the companies Decapack (Chile), and Hilldrup (USA) engaged in a double version of LACMANext’s Exchange Program. Doug Quarles of Hilldrup travelled to Chile to spend a week with the Decapack team, and likewise, Andrés Gonzalez of Decapack, travelled to Hilldrup’s main offices in Virginia, USA. The experience turned out to be a total success, according to both participants and to the team members of each company.

A total of 16 staff members took part in two separate seminars in Miami last May: “Coaching for Packing Instructors” (May 14-16), and “Moving from A-Z” (19-22).

Offered in Spanish by LACMA Training Team instructors Miguel Florez (Aviomar –Colombia), and Evelyn de Jaén (LACMA’s General Manager, Panama), the seminar for Packing Instructors gave eight participants from the United States and Puerto Rico the opportunity to cover topics such as Tools and Methodology, the Integration 54

This seminar was also enhanced by the participation of two U.S. Customs officials, Mr. Politakis and Mrs. Paniagua who provided useful information.

Both seminars will be offered once again in September in Madrid, Spain, for the benefit of LACMA’s European associate members.

The controversy, nevertheless, was not able to stop the flow of thousands of tourists from all corners of the globe, a fact that justified the investment of 2.8 billion dollars in 21 projects that have raised the country’s air transport capacity by 81%, including the construction of new terminals, the remodeling, and expansion of airports in Salvador, Sao Paulo, Brasilia, Manaus, and Rio. Additionally, Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) has authorized 1,973 new flights between June 6 and July 20, in order to strengthen the country’s aerial network and lower travel prices during the event.

What emotions did you feel after receiving the news of your selection as president of OMNI? None, since I was predestined for the position. It was simply my turn due to seniority.

The Norwegian company, NFB International Relocations AS is pleased to welcome Camilla Wibe Evensen, who assumed a combined position of both International Relocation Coordinator and Sales on May 5, 2014. Camilla has previously held positions as Administration and Marketing Coordinator followed by Sales Executive at DHL Global Forwarding Norway, and as Sales Executive at Kuehne + Nagel.

In her role as Sales Executive, she has grown and maintained her own customer base, providing customized logistical solutions for customers in all industries in which the services provided has consisted of sea, road, air and warehousing solutions.

Greek-based Orphee Beinoglou has recently moved into new premises in the northern port-city of Thessaloniki. The company’s new offices are housed in a privately owned modern complex of 750m2, and constitute a base of operations serving the nearby countries of the Balkans.

Transportation Partner of the Year Award Premio al Socio Transportista del Año Last April, Transportes FINK (Brazil) was recognized by The MIGroup as the recipient of The Americas Transportation Partner of the Year Award in a ceremony that took place in Edinburgh, Scotland. The distinction was based on a set of evaluation criteria, designed to quantify the quality performance of its recipients, and recognizes the achievements and outstanding service delivery excellence exhibited throughout the previous year.

FINK was very honored to receive the Award through the hands of Director Cristiane Balista.

Established in 1883, this family owned and operated company is one of the oldest and largest moving agents in Houston. Its facilities currently include a state-of-the-art 135,000 sq. ft. warehouse on 8-1/2 acres which contains 30,000 sq. ft. of air-conditioned storage and ADT security, and closed-circuit cameras with digital recorder and remote viewing.
