ust as with IAM, FIDI and OMNI, LACMA was recently represented at the “2nd Moving Industry Leaders SUMMIT” in the city of Luxembourg, an event created and organized by FEDEMAC, the Federation of European Movers Associations.

The forum addresses topics of common interest for the moving industry, in addition to sharing knowledge, ideas, experiences, and better practices.

l igual que en IAM, FIDI y OMNI, LACMA estuvo recientemente A representada en el “2nd Moving Industry Leaders SUMMIT” en la ciudad de Luxemburgo, evento creado y organizado por FEDEMAC, la Federación de Asociaciones de Empresas de Mudanzas en Europa. En este foro se discuten temas de interés común para la industria de mudanzas y también se comparten conocimientos, ideas, experiencias y mejores prácticas.

Amongst the topics addressed last year were the ethics and conduct codes, compliance, transport and its social sphere, new developments with regards to moving-industry suppliers, harmonized customs codes, the definition of a professional moving company, unfair competition, customs clearance, and data protection.

El año pasado se abordaron temas como los códigos de ética y conducta, cumplimiento, transporte y su esfera social, nuevos adelantos sobre suplidores de la industria de mudanzas, códigos armonizados para la aduana, definición sobre empresa de mudanza profesional, competencia desleal, liquidación de aduanas y protección de data.

FEDEMAC represents the interests of over 3,000 moving companies in 26 European companies. Considered the voice of moving companies at the European Parliament, it was created in 1959, after the foundation of the European Community, in 1957. FEDEMAC’s members are national associations and direct affiliates, the latter of which are included whenever there are no national associations in their countries of origin. FEDEMAC also has commercial partners that offer services to the moving industry.

FEDEMAC representa los intereses de más de 3,000 empresas de mudanzas en 26 países del Viejo Continente. Considerada la voz de las empresas de mudanzas en el Parlamento Europeo, fue creada en 1959, luego de la fundación de la Comunidad Europea, en 1957.

Los miembros de FEDEMAC son asociaciones nacionales y afiliados directos. Estos últimos son incluidos cuando no hay una asociación nacional en sus países de origen. FEDEMAC también cuenta con socios comerciales que le brindan servicios a la industria de mudanzas.

FEDEMAC’s main function is to express the concerns and needs of the moving industry in Europe, and coordinate national activities with impact at the European level. This is achieved through presentations at the European Parliament and its committees, and through connections with national associations and commercial organizations.

La función principal de FEDEMAC es expresar las preocupaciones y necesidades de la industria de mudanzas en Europa y coordinar actividades nacionales con impacto a nivel europeo. Esto lo logran con presentaciones ante el Parlamento Europeo y sus Comisiones y con enlaces de asociaciones nacionales y organizaciones de comercio.

This year’s “Moving Industry Moving SUMMIT” started with welcome words by Sabine Hartmann, FEDEMAC’s Chairman, and by Max Chorus, representative of the National Association of Moving Companies of Luxembourg. There was a roll call, followed by presentations on BREXIT, the results and effects of the elections in the U.S., a vision on Asia, and an overview of the moving industry. Keynote speakers were Mark Chudley, member of FEDEMAC’s Board of Directors, Terry Head of IAM, Eric Lim of Asian Tigers Mobility Group, and Barbara Savelli, member of FEDEMAC’s Board of Directors.

El “Moving Industry Moving SUMMIT” de este año inició con las palabras de bienvenida de la Presidenta de FEDEMAC, Sabine Hartmann y el representante de la Asociación Nacional de Empresas de Mudanzas de Luxemburgo, Max Chorus. Hubo un “roll call” seguido de presentaciones sobre BREXIT, resultados y efectos de las elecciones en los EEUU, visión de Asia, y reconocimiento de la industria de mudanzas. Los expositores fueron Mark Chudley, miembro de la Junta Directiva de FEDEMAC, Terry Head, de IAM; Eric Lim, de Asian Tigers Mobility Group, y Barbara Savelli, miembro de la Junta Directiva de FEDEMAC.

Likewise, Sergio Mojica, Deputy Secretary of the World Customs Organization, offered a presentation on the Authorized Economic Operator, the World Trade Organization, and on electronic commerce and security. The event also included the participation of the Hon. Peter Lundgren, member of the European Parliament and chairman of the Transport Committee, who gave an overview of his tenure during the past year and the challenges of European transport.

Además, Sergio Mojica, Subsecretario General de la Organización Mundial de Aduanas, hizo una presentación sobre el Operador Económico Autorizado, la Organización Mundial de Comercio, seguridad y comercio electrónico. El evento también contó con la participación del honorable Peter Lundgren, miembro del Parlamento Europeo y Presidente de la Comisión de Transporte, quien hizo un recuento de su trabajo durante el año y los desafíos en el trasporte europeo.

At the end, FEDEMAC signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the World Trade Organization.

I wish to thank Sabine Hartmann and the FEDEMAC Board of Directors for organizing this forum of moving-industry leaders, and for the opportunity of getting to know and to participate in FEDEMAC’s General Assembly, along with colleagues from IAM, FIDI, and OMNI.

With this edition, we finish-up the year… 2016 has flown by!

Con esta edición, cerramos el año… ¡2016 ha volado!

In this edition, you will see a summary of the on-site seminars we carried out in September in Mexico City, which exhibited a great local participation, in addition to including participants from other countries as well.

En esta edición, podrán ver la reseña de dos seminarios presenciales que realizamos este año en septiembre en la Ciudad de México, los cuales contaron con una muy buena participación local, y con varios participantes de otros países.

Once more, we see that these seminars, in addition to developing the participants´ skills and abilities so that they may better perform their duties, motivate and generate a stronger commitment and a better attitude amongst them. We thank all the members that, aware of the potential of said activities for the improvement and quality of their services, considered important and necessary to train their personnel, to help them accomplish their objectives.

Una vez más, vemos que estos seminarios, además de desarrollar habilidades y destrezas para desempeñar sus cargos, motivan a los participantes y generan un mayor compromiso y una mejor actitud de su parte. Agradecemos a todos los miembros que, conscientes del potencial que tienen estas actividades para el mejoramiento de sus servicios y la calidad de éstos, consideraron importante y necesario el entrenamiento de su personal, a fin de ayudarles a alcanzar sus objetivos.

It was with great pride that we witnessed the induction of our very dear Paul Levine into IAM’s Hall of Fame. It is an honor to honor! We congratulate IAM for this recognition, as well as all the Levine family of New Haven Moving Equipment Corp.

As you can see, in this edition an ample report is displayed on our next convention venue, to be held April 23 to 26, 2017 at the Hotel Casa Magna Marriott in Puerto Vallarta, México.

The city of Puerto Vallarta has received various distinctions such as: The Friendliest City, the Best Place to Retire, Best Vacation Destination in Mexico, and Top 10 Destinations in Mexico, among others.

Its sub-tropical weather, similar to that of Hawaii (average temperature of 25 degrees C, 77 degrees F), makes it an ideal tourist destination. Mark your agendas… sunny days in Puerto Vallarta await us!

MOVING FROM A-Z SEMINAR Spreading industry know-how and strengthening networks Seminario Mudanzas de la A-Z Diseminando conocimientos de la industria y fortaleciendo redes de trabajo Held September 12-15 at Mexico City’s Hotel Krystal Satélite María Barbara, LACMA’s “Moving from A-Z” Seminar attracted a total of 21 participants from throughout the Americas.

Middle-management personnel from LACMA members of Canada, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay, and Venezuela (with positions ranging from project managers and account executives, to logistics and export managers,) took part in the seminar, which addressed topics such as inspection visits, quotation & sales, work planning, contract conditions, and communications & responsibility, among others.

The seminar’s instructor was Luis Taja (Bolivia,) of LACMA’s Training Team.

Realizado del 12 al 15 de septiembre en el Hotel Krystal Satélite María Barbara de Ciudad de México, el Seminario “Mudanzas de la A-Z” de LACMA atrajo a un total de 21 participantes de diversos países del continente americano.

Personal de mandos medios de empresas LACMA de Canadá, Colombia, México, Paraguay y Venezuela (con posiciones que iban desde gerentes de proyecto y ejecutivos de cuenta, hasta gerentes de logística y exportaciones), participaron del seminario, que abordó temas como visitas de inspección, cotización y ventas, planificación del trabajo, condiciones del contrato, y comunicación & responsabilidad, entre otros.

There were four days of intense work, which granted us the opportunity to interact with people from other countries and positions within the organizations they represented.

Fueron cuatro días de intensas jornadas de trabajo, donde se dio la ocasión de compartir con personas de diferentes países y posiciones dentro de las organizaciones a las cuales pertenecemos.

The opportunity we had to listen to and analyze the various points of view of all participants allowed us to reach valuable conclusions. Likewise, the participation of a suitable, experienced, and knowledgeable instructor gave the seminar a very professional touch.

La oportunidad que tuvimos de escuchar y analizar los diferentes puntos de vista de todos los participantes nos permitió obtener conclusiones valiosas. Asimismo, el poder contar con un instructor con idoneidad, experiencia y conocimiento en el ramo, le dio un toque muy profesional al seminario.

I believe LACMA carries out a very relevant mission by organizing training courses and seminars for members seeking a true improvement in the quality of their services, as they result in a better performance of our companies, and in a great professional and cultural development at the personal level.

I hope the association continues carrying out seminars and courses that cover specific topics, and that would foster the continuous updating of the standards that govern our industry.

Creo que LACMA realiza una labor muy relevante al organizar cursos de capacitación y seminarios para la formación de sus miembros en busca de un verdadero mejoramiento en la calidad de sus servicios, ya que redunda en un mejor desempeño en nuestras empresas, y un gran desarrollo profesional y cultural a nivel personal.

COACHING FOR PACKING INSTRUCTORS Developing management and leadership skills

The Coaching for Packing Instructors was the second of LACMA’s on-site seminars

held last September in Mexico City, taking place between Sept. 19th -22nd, right after the Moving from A-Z training session for middle managers.

Luis Taja was in charge of educating packing instructors on the personal, social, and professional skills needed to work with one of the most sensitve departments of any moving company.

The topic list included, but was not limited to, Values (Commitment & Responsibility,) Attitudes (Being Positive; Following Instructions,) Emotions (Stress Management; Conflicts; Coherence & Harmony,) and Skills (Leadership & Service; Emotional & Verbal Communication.)

Twelve out of the seminar’s 14 participants hailed from Mexican LACMA members (Atlasmex Relocations, Autotransportes Internacionales, Balderas, Marcela Balderas Movers & Relocation, Mexpack, Mudanzas Gou, MyM Internacional, Sancalsa International Services, Thelsa Mudanzas, and Trafimar Relocation Services); the other two being from Colombia (Aviomar) and Perú (Express Transports).

COACHING PARA INSTRUCTORES DE EMBALADORES

Desarrollando habilidades de gestión y liderazgo El Coaching para Instructores de Embaladores fue el segundo de los dos seminarios presenciales que realizó LACMA en septiembre en la Ciudad de México, realizándose entre el 19 y 22 de sept., justo después del curso Mudanzas de la A-Z para mandos medios.

Luis Taja estuvo a cargo de educar a los instructores de embaladores sobre las destrezas personales, sociales y profesionales necesarias para trabajar con uno de los departamentos más sensibles de cualquier empresa de mudanzas. La lista incluyó, aunque no estuvo limitada a tópicos como Valores (Compromiso y Responsabilidad); Actitudes (Ser positivo, Adecuación de Instrucciones); Emociones (Manejo de Estrés, Conflictos, Coherencia y Armonía), y Habilidades (Liderazgo y Servicio, Comunicación Verbal y Emocional).

Ecuador STANDING SIDE BY SIDE IN DIFFICULT TIMES

APOYÁNDONOS EN TIEMPOS DIFÍCILES

Continuando con su compromiso de brindar ayuda humanitaria en

ontinuing with its commitment to providing humanitarian relief in the case of natural disasters throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, LACMA recently donated US$10,000 to the people of Ecuador, a country that is still recovering from the devastation of the April 2016 earthquakes.

The funds were allocated into two separate projects, the first being the reconstruction of the Bellavista children’s’ food kitchen, which was affected by the earthquake, led by father Bruno Roque, of the La Merced de Bahía de Caráquez Parish, which received US$5,000.00. The initiative was recommended by father Julen Salazar, of Quito.

An equal donation was made to TECHO Ecuador for the construction of new homes for the earthquakes’ victims.

Those in charge with delivering the donations, in representation of LACMA, were Gustavo López Borja from Ecuadorian Transport, Pablo Calero from Global Transport, María Elena Ávalos and Carlos E. Ávalos from INSA –all LACMA members from Ecuador.

Los fondos fueron distribuidos en dos proyectos distintos, siendo el primero la reconstrucción del comedor infantil del barrio de Bellavista, el cual fue afectado por el terremoto, dirigido por el padre Bruno Roque de la Parroquia La Merced de Bahía de Caráquez, que recibió US$5,000.00. La iniciativa fue recomendada por el padre Julen Salazar, de Quito.

Una donación igual fue hecha a TECHO Ecuador para la construcción de nuevas viviendas para las víctimas de los movimientos telúricos.

Los encargados de entregar las donaciones, en representación de LACMA, fueron los señores Gustavo López Borja de Ecuadorian Transport, Pablo Calero de Global Transport, María Elena Ávalos y Carlos E. Ávalos de INSA –todos ellos, miembros LACMA de Ecuador.

Spanish CNMC Sanctions 15 Moving Companies As we have recently communicated to the LACMA membership, through two Info LACMAs in the month of November, the Spanish Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) has sanctioned 15 Spanish international moving companies, including 10 affiliated to LACMA. The document (S/DC/0544/14 moving international) indicates it bases its sanction on the adoption of agreements, exchange of information, and fixed-pricing between companies, for the distribution of the business (international moving services) of several Spanish government institutions.

LACMA has contacted the LACMA companies cited in the document so that they may explain the situation; all indicate to be in disagreement with the aforementioned resolution, as they allege not to be responsible for the actions attributed to them and say that the decision of the CNMC is administrative, not based on law, and that they will take the case to the respective legal courts in order to defend their interests and will request the suspension of the mentioned resolution.

Given that legal appeals and the ruling of the courts are still pending, our legal advisors indicate that LACMA is not empowered to define the status of the LACMA members mentioned in the document. Nonetheless, LACMA will follow this issue closely until it is resolved, in order to define the position our association will take. We will keep our membership upto date of any verdict renderred in this regard.

It should be noted that given this irregularity, LACMA would like to emphasize that it condemns and rejects any illegal and unethical conduct, that goes against the Bye Laws and Ethical Principles of our association. LACMA was founded and bases itself on ethics, trust and integrity, principles to which all members must adhere at all times.

CNMC Española Sanciona 15 Empresas de Mudanzas Como ya hemos comunicado recientemente a la membresía LACMA, a través de dos Info LACMAs en el mes de noviembre, la Comisión Española de Mercados y Competencia (CNMC) ha sancionado a 15 empresas españolas de mudanzas internacionales, entre las cuales se encuentran 10 afiliadas a LACMA. Dicha sanción dice basarse en la adopción de acuerdos, intercambio de información y fijación de precios entre empresas, para el reparto del mercado (servicios mudanzas internacionales) de varias instituciones gubernamentales españolas, según indica el Expediente S/DC/0544/14 Mudanzas internacionales.

LACMA se ha comunicado con las empresas LACMA citadas en dicho expediente para que nos aclaren su situación, y todas indican estar en desacuerdo con la citada resolución ya que alegan no ser responsables de las conductas que se les imputa, que la decisión de la CNMC es administrativa, no de derecho, por lo que ellos buscarán el amparo de los tribunales en defensa de sus intereses y que solicitarán la suspensión de tal resolución.

Dado que aún quedan recursos judiciales pendientes y la definición de los tribunales, nuestros asesores legales nos indican que LACMA no está facultada para definir el estatus de los miembros LACMA citados. No obstante, LACMA seguirá este tema de cerca hasta su resolución, a fin de definir la posición de nuestra asociación. Comunicaremos a nuestra membresía cualquier veredicto al respecto.

One of the highlights of the 2016 IAM’s Annual Meeting and Expo in New Orleans was the induction of three prominent industry figures into the organization’s Hall of Honor. Their names are: James F. Coleman (Coleman American Moving Services,) Kevin Spealman (National Forwarding Company,) and the late J. Paul Levine (New Haven Companies).

Considered by many one of the most beloved figures in the moving industry, J. Paul Levine took over the management of his father’s company in the 1950's, until his passing in August of 2007. His reputation as a successful businessman could only be matched by his philanthropic, compassionate, and dynamic nature beyond the confines of his office.

IAM’s Hall of Honor was established in 2008 to pay tribute to Industry leaders whose careers reflect exceptional and distinguished service to their companies or the Association.

Uno de los puntos más destacados de la Reunión Anual y Expo de IAM 2016 en Nueva Orleáns fue la introducción de tres prominentes figuras de la industria al Salón de Honor. Sus nombres son: James F. MOVING AGAINST HUNGER TAKING A STAND AGAINST FOOD INSECURITY unger is an issue in virtually every country around the world H – regardless of economics. Every night, millions of people, many of them children, go to sleep with a growling stomach, while thousands of pounds of perfectly edible food are thrown away.

Adam Lowy, founder of Move for Hunger, decided to do something about the situation. Coming from a moving industry family, Adam knew that a lot of food is thrown out during the moving process. So, he simply asked his moving customers: if I transport the food items to the food bank, would you be willing to donate them?

The response was overwhelmingly “YES”. From there, Adam began enlisting other movers to do the same. With momentum growing, Move for Hunger never looked back. Since 2009, the organization has grown into a multi-national non-profit with hundreds of moving company members. These companies have collectively donated 7 million pounds of food to local food banks throughout the U.S. and Canada.

The program is simple. Participating local movers pack unwanted non-perishable food items in special Move for Hunger boxes, then deliver them to a local food bank for distribution.

One of Move for Hunger’s top supporters is Allied International. Allied was one of the first moving companies to support Move for Hunger’s mission. Since learning of the program in 2011, Allied International agents have collected over 2 million pounds of food, providing the equivalent of 1.89 million meals to hungry people around the world.

TOMANDO PASOS EN CONTRA DE LA INSEGURIDAD ALIMENTARIA E

l hambre es un tema que se da en cada país alrededor del mundo –sin importar su economía. Cada noche, millones de personas, muchas de ellas niños, se acuestan con el estómago vacío, mientras que miles de libras de comida en perfectas condiciones se desperdician.

Adam Lowly, fundador de Move for Hunger, decidió hacer algo sobre la situación. Como parte de una familia de la industria de las mudanzas, Adam sabía que mucha comida es arrojada a la basura durante el proceso de mudanza, por lo que sencillamente preguntó a sus clientes: si yo transporto la comida a un banco de alimentos, ¿estarán ustedes dispuestos a donarlos?

La respuesta fue un contundente ¡SÍ! Desde entonces, Adam empezó a sumar a otros mudanceros para hacer lo mismo.

Con un creciente interés, Move for Hunger nunca miró hacia atrás. Desde 2009, la organización ha crecido para convertirse en una entidad multinacional sin fines de lucro, compuesta por cientos de empresas de mudanza como miembros. The world recently witnessed one of the biggest schemes of corruption ever, when my country’s federal government pushed a number of huge public companies (as Petrobrás) into bankrupcy by overvaluing public construction to get bribery.

So far, this crisis is already affecting over 11 million workers who have suddenly lost their jobs.

Paradoxically, this situation brought some benefits to our business, since all foreigners working in Brazil obviously need our service to leave the country, just as the thousands of Brazilians who live abroad.

Such tragic and shameless acts simply broke the legs of Brazilian economy! They raised fees and taxes to cover the hole they caused to the economy, and as a result, many foreignbased corporations left the country.

In the end, although we are reaping benefits from this situation, we are looking forward to getting back on track and make Brazil grow again.

presenció una de las tramas de corrupción más grandes que se hayan visto, cuando el gobierno federal llevó a la quiebra grandes empresas públicas (como Petrobrás) mediante la sobrevaloración de la construcción pública para obtener sobornos. ¡Dichos trágicos y descarados actos sencillamente quebraron las piernas de la economía brasileña!

Subieron las tarifas y los impuestos para cubrir el hoyo que causaron en la economía y, como resultado, muchas corporaciones de capital extranjero abandonaron el país.

Hasta ahora, la crisis ya está afectando a más de 11 millones de trabajadores que han perdido sus empleos de repente. Paradójicamente, esta situación trajo algunos beneficios a nuestro negocio, ya que todos los exteranjeros que trabajan en Brasil necesitan de nuestros servicios para abandonar el país, al igual que los miles de brasileños que viven en el extranjero.

Al final, a pesar de que estamos obteniendo beneficios de esta situación, esperamos que las cosas vuelvan a su curso y hagan que Brasil crezca nuevamente.

Door To Door Transports (Peru) recently

celebrated its eighteenth anniversary and, for this purpose, its removals’ staff travelled to the outskirts of Lima to escape from the overcast skies typical of winter in the Peruvian capital, and to enjoy a sunny day outdoors. Integration and sports activities were the theme of this anniversary celebration, a fact that called for the creation of an organizing committee charged with making the event a reality. All participants were grouped into 4 teams, each of which featured a designated color. Likewise, special attention was given to the participants’ need to belong to different areas, to promote integration. Seven sports activities were defined to create the mini-Olympics and assure a day filled with activities.

Volleyball and soccer were the sports disciplines that generated the greatest expectation. The great skill with which some of the participants excelled was observed during the event, as

well as their competitive spirit, although camaraderie was, above all, the most visible characteristic observed throughout the activity. Just as noticeable was the delicious Peruvian cuisine, which all participants enjoyed with a great variety of national dishes.

Once the event had concluded, and after presenting the prize to the winning team, the Management Committee thanked everyone for an additional year of commitment and accomplished goals.

Finally, and as it is customary at the company’s anniversary events, acknowledgements were given to all associates who, in 2016, completed an additional five-year period as part of the Door-To-Door Transports’ family.

To Door Transports (Perú) celebró recientemente su aniversario No. dieciocho, y para ello, el equipo de mudanzas se trasladó a las afueras de Lima para escaparse del cielo cubierto de nubes, característico del invierno en la capital peruana, y así disfrutar de un día soleado al aire libre. Integración y actividades deportivas fue la temática de esta celebración de aniversario, por lo que se conformó un comité organizador encargado de hacer realidad el evento.

Se agruparon a todos los participantes en 4 equipos y se asignó un color para cada uno. Además, se dio especial énfasis a la necesidad de que los participantes perteneciesen a diferentes áreas, a fin de fomentar la integración. Se definieron 7 actividades deportivas para dar lugar a las mini-olimpiadas y asegurar un día lleno de actividades.

Las disciplinas deportivas que tuvieron mayor expectativa fueron el voleibol y el fútbol. Durante el evento se apreció

la gran habilidad con la que destacaron varios participantes, así como su espíritu competitivo, pero, por sobre todo, la fraternidad que prevaleció durante la actividad.

Igualmente, destacable fue la deliciosa gastronomía peruana, de la que todos pudieron disfrutar con una gran variedad de platos típicos.

Culminado el evento, y luego de haber premiado al equipo ganador, el Comité de Gerencia agradeció a todos por un año adicional de compromiso y objetivos cumplidos.

Finalmente y como es costumbre en los eventos de aniversario de la empresa, se entregaron reconocimientos a todos los colaboradores que en el 2016 cumplieron un quinquenio más en la familia de Door To Door Transports.

A BIT OF HISTORY

UN POCO DE HISTORIA

Before the mid-19th century, the area known today as Puerto Vallarta, in the Mexican state of Jalisco, was an undiscovered bay inhabited by crocodiles. Its first human settlement, a village known as Las Peñas, was established in 1851 as a source of salt for the production of silver. Salt was shipped into Los Muertos beach by boat and then transported to the silver mines up in the mountains.

Las Peñas formally became a municipality in 1918, changing its name to Puerto Vallarta that same year. The town prospered due to U.S.-private investment in the production of bananas throught the 1920s and ‘30s, and later, due to the export of shark fins (coveted by Chinese restaurants in the U.S.), and shark liver, consumed by U.S. soldiers during World War II. The 1960’s and early 1970’s can well be considered the starting point of Puerto Vallarta´s tourist boom, thanks to the vision of governor Francisco Medina Ascencio and President Díaz Ordaz.

Antes de mediados del s. XIX, el área conocida hoy como Puerto Vallarta, en el estado mexicano de Jalisco, era una bahía no descubierta, habitada por cocodrilos. Su primer asentamiento humano, una aldea conocida como Las Peñas, se fundó en 1851 como una fuente de sal para el procesamiento de plata. La sal era transportada en barco a playa Los Muertos, y de ahí, trasladada a las minas de plata en las montañas.

Las Peñas se convirtió en municipio en 1918, cambiando su nombre a Puerto Vallarta ese mismo año. El pueblo prosperó debido a la inversión privada estadounidense en la producción del banano durante los años 1920 y 30 y luego, debido a la exportación de aletas de tiburón (codiciadas por los restaurantes chinos de Estados Unidos), e hígado de tiburón, consumido por los soldados estadounidenses durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Los años 1960 y principios de los ’70 bien pueden ser considerados el punto de inicio del boom turístico de Puerto Vallarta, gracias a la visión del gobernador Francisco Medina Ascencio y del presidente Díaz Ordaz.

orn between 1980 and the mid-1990’s, Millennials can well be considered a privileged clan, as they were barely in grade school when the Berlin Wall was torn down, and most likely learned in high school about the “red-and-nuclear” scares their grand-parents experienced as children back in the early 1950s.

Considered the children of democracy and free markets, this generation, also known as Generation Y, is the fastest-growing age group in the workforce of the United States and elsewhere.

Their introduction into the scene, which coincides with the technological boom of the last two decades, has made them highly attractive in today’s workplace, which also covets them due to their high levels of education.

They are by far the most diverse generation in history. No other age group has attained its levels of university and posttertiary education. Globalization is part of their mindset, as does the protection of the environment, human rights, and the acceptance of alternative lifestyles; however, they’ve also learned to cope with the rise of anti-Western terrorism after September 11, 2001 –considered by many the most relevant historic event of said generation, in addition to the high unemployment rates and low economic growth caused by the World Financial Crisis of 2008.

recently read a survey on the millennials. Personally, in regards to age, I could say that I’m practically on the very limit of being included into this group (which comprises those born between 1980 and 2001,) as my birth year was 1979. This is a very interesting topic for me, although it is true that sometimes I don’t seem to understand the behavior of today’s young people, despite virtually having a similar age.

To be honest, things today are very different from the principles, ethics, or values they thought us in previous decades (I legally belong to the previous generation, known as the “GenXers”.)

Social media has come to totally change the way in which people interact. Folks nowadays no longer seek eye contact, as they prefer to communicate via chatting apps or to hide behind an e-mail account instead of engaging in face-to-face conversation in a tranquil and respectful manner.

I am speaking about social skills that are only learned through practice, and not through study. I feel as if previous generations used to speak through example. Today, however, criticism is more powerful, just as the mere fact of being judged wrongly –instead of being praised. And all of this, in a virtual manner, of course.

ecientemente, leí un estudio sobre los millennials, conocidos, en buen español, como la generación milénica. En lo personal, en cuanto a edades, pudiera decir que estoy en el borde de lo que se considera parte de este grupo (personas nacidas entre 1980 y 2001), pues nací en el año 1979. Se trata de un tema que me interesa muchísimo, si bien es cierto que a veces no entiendo mucho el comportamiento de los nuevos jóvenes o la gente hoy en día, muy a pesar de contar con una edad prácticamente similar.

Para ser honesto, las cosas como se hacen hoy son muy diferentes a los principios, ética o valores que nos enseñaron en nuestras épocas (Pertenezco, legalmente a la generación anterior, conocida como la “Generación X”). Las redes sociales vinieron a cambiar mucho la manera en que interactúan las personas; la gente ya no se mira a los ojos, ya que prefieren comunicarse por aplicaciones de chat o esconderse detrás de una cuenta de email en lugar de conversar, tranquilamente y con respeto, de manera presencial.

Hablo de habilidades sociales que solo se aprenden con la práctica, mas no con el estudio. Siento que antes la gente hablaba con el ejemplo. Hoy en día, sin embargo, es mucho más fuerte la crítica o el simple hecho de ser juzgado a mal –en lugar de ser elogiado. Y todo esto, de manera virtual, por supuesto.

The difficult question is, how can we retain employees known for their constant quest for better job opportunities? It is believed that by 2020, 1/3 of the global workforce will be a part of this generation.

La pregunta difícil es ¿cómo retener a un personal conocido por su constante búsqueda de mejores oportunidades laborales? Para el 2020 se espera que 1/3 de la fuerza laboral mundial sea parte de esta generación.

According to a survey by Manpower, running marathons, training, updating, and making a pause along the way are some of the Millennials’ most frequent activities. Their main priorities are: financial growth, opportunities to move up the corporate ladder, benefits, holidays, and security. This survey was carried out in 25 countries, with the opinion of 19,000 members of this group.

Según un estudio por Manpower, correr maratones, capacitarse, actualizarse y hacer una pausa en el camino son algunas de las actividades frecuentes de los millennials. Sus prioridades destacadas son: crecimiento económico, oportunidad de ascender, beneficios, días festivos y seguridad. Esta encuesta se hizo en 25 países con la opinión de 19,000 personas de este grupo.

We hope this information becomes a practical guide that would allow us, the employers, to consider Human Resources practices with a different point of view, all with the purpose of attracting, retaining and developing employees of this generation, considered by experts as the most educated at the professional level.

AN EMERGING MILLENNIAL VOICE IN YOUR OPINION, HOW WILL THE OUTCOME OF THE 2016 U.S. PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS AFFECT THE MOVING INDUSTRY?

I think regardless of the outcome, you will start to see more families and companies begin to move again. Everyone has been put on pause leading up to this election. Families are waiting to see what happens, as are companies with their employees.

Once an outcome is decided, people will have a better sense of the future and have more peace of mind with the decision.

HOW DID YOU END UP IN THE MOVING INDUSTRY AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A PART OF IT?

My family has been involved in the industry since the 1930s when my great grandfather began working at Hilldrup. After he bought the company in 1940, it has been our family company ever since. I grew up working in the warehouse and on the trucks at an early age just like my grandfather and father.

I began working full time in the industry in August 2015 once I graduated from college.

IF YOU HAD THE CHANCE OF CHANGING TRADES, WHICH FIELD WOULD YOU VENTURE IN AND WHY?

I am very happy with where I am, but I think the easy answer would be sports. That was always my passion growing up so it would be very interesting to work for a sports league or organization in some capacity.

WHAT ARE THE PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL STRENGTHS YOU BRING INTO YOUR ORGANIZATION?

I think I help bring a new perspective with what the younger generation looks for and how they interact with companies today. No one likes change, but it is necessary in any industry if you want to continue to stay relevant and successful. I’ve tried to come in with fresh ideas and energy, while still respecting what has made us so successful for over 100 years. As for personal strengths, I try to be the best leader every day. I always pride myself on the ability to work and connect with people from different demographics and backgrounds.

PLEASE GIVE US YOUR DEFINITION OF THE WORD SUCCESS AS WELL AS THE TRAITS OF A SUCCESSFUL PERSON.

The definition of success in the dictionary is “the accomplishment of an aim or purpose.” To me, success means thriving in an aspect or many aspects of your life. It means exceeding expectations. Success to me is when I give my best at work every day, treat everyone I encounter with respect and 52

then go home to loving family and friends who bring me joy and to whom I impact their lives in a positive way. It’s being positive, yet realistic, it’s feeling confident and feeling “rich” in terms of the blessings (family, friends, a job I love, a roof over my head) I have in this world.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN CHALLENGES OF THE INDUSTRY TODAY? PLEASE MENTION SOME OF THE BEST WAYS WE COULD TACKLE THEM.

Driver shortage is such a huge issue today. Drivers are fleeing out of the moving industry due to decreasing pay and the seasonality of the job. Freight companies are paying more and the work is less strenuous. It is incredibly important to find ways to increase our margins and keep the work year round.

Non-traditional competitors are yet another challenge, as they come with promising cool technology and interfaces.

They’re trying to take some of the cut from corporate clients when margins are already so low. We need to emphasize the assets that we as a moving company have - people, trucks, warehouses. The technology companies have yet to offer these hard assets that are, and will always be, a requirement for someone looking to move.

Can we partner with these tech companies and/or buy them for our use? That’d be ideal. Another challenge is adapting quickly enough to attract millennials to move with us. Right now, they move frequently but have very few belongings and either don’t know the names of traditional full-service movers or aren’t willing to pay the prices. We need to create a millennial brand that is tech-forward and takes the headache out of moving so that the convenience of it easily covers the extra cost of hiring a full-service mover. We also need to market ourselves better to millennials to become known.

COUNTRIES VISITED?

I have been very fortunate to visit many foreign countries. In Europe, I have been to the UK, Germany, Italy, France, and the Netherlands. I have also been to the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Jamaica, and Canada.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A YOUNG PROFESSIONAL IN THE EARLY 21ST CENTURY?

It is an exciting time to be a young professional. The millennial generation just became the largest segment of the work force, and the new ideas and attitudes we bring will help shape the future of the global economy. The workplace is changing because of the ideals, expectations and strengths of the millennial generation, but we have a lot to learn from those who forged the path ahead of us and created the successes of today.

WHAT’S YOUR IMPRESSION OF LATIN AMERICA, BOTH CULTURALLY AND BUSINESSWISE?

warm and welcoming to tourists when I visited the Dominican Republic and Mexico. There is ample history associated with the culture, and it is clear Latin Americans are very proud of their roots. It is also quite apparent Latin Americans take great pride in their work and are proud of what they have accomplished. While the key is working hard, I greatly respect and adore the emphasis Latinos put on family and the time put aside to spend together.

I am looking forward to understanding more of the culture and connecting with partners across Latin America.

FAVORITE BOOK AND WHAT ARE THE LESSONS YOU LEARNED FROM IT?

I’ll go with a book I just recently finished, Shoe Dog. It is about Phil Knight, the founder and Chairman of Nike, and it is his story of starting this company out of his garage and all the trials and tribulations he endured along the way. It teaches great persistence and entrepreneurship and how hard work is the common denominator to any success story. I would recommend it to all.

Creo que, sin importar el resultado, empezaremos a ver que más familias y empresas trasladarse nuevamente. Todos han estado en pausa en el período anterior a estas elecciones. Las familias están esperando ver qué pasa, al igual que las empresas y sus empleados.

Una vez se sepa el resultado, las personas tendrán un mejor sentido del futuro y sentirán una mayor paz mental con la decisión. ¿CÓMO TERMINASTE EN LA INDUSTRIA DE LAS MUDANZAS Y CUÁNTO TIEMPO HAS SIDO PARTE DE LA MISMA?

Mi familia ha estado involucrada con la industria desde los años 1930, cuando mi bisabuelo empezó a trabajar para Hilldrup. Luego de que comprara la compañía en 1940, ha sido la empresa familiar desde entonces. Crecí trabajando en el almacén y en los camiones a temprana edad, al igual que mi abuelo y padre. Inicié trabajando a tiempo completo en la industria en agosto de 2015, al terminar la universidad.

SI TUVIERAS LA OPORTUNIDAD DE CAMBIAR DE CARRERAS, ¿EN QUÉ CAMPO TE GUSTARÍA INVOLUCRARTE Y POR QUÉ?

Me siento feliz en donde estoy, aunque pienso que una respuesta fácil sería los deportes. Esa siempre fue mi pasión mientras crecía, por lo que sería muy interesante trabajar en alguna área dentro de una liga u organización deportiva.

Creo que aporto una nueva perspectiva en cuanto a lo que la nueva generación busca y cómo interactúa con las empresas en la actualidad. A nadie le gusta el cambio, pero es necesario en cualquiera industria, si deseas continuar siendo relevante y exitoso.

He intentado traer ideas y energías frescas, a la vez que respeto lo que nos ha hecho exitosos por más de 100 años. En cuanto a mis fortalezas personales, trato de ser el mejor líder cada día. Siempre me enorgullezco de la habilidad de trabajar y entablar conexiones con personas de diferentes orígenes y culturas.

BRÍNDANOS, POR FAVOR, TU DEFINICIÓN DE LA PALABRA ÉXITO, AL IGUAL QUE LAS CARACTERÍSTICAS DE UNA PERSONA EXITOSA.

La definición de éxito en el diccionario es “el cumplimiento de un objetivo o propósito”. Para mí, éxito significa prosperar en un aspecto o en muchos aspectos de tu vida. Significa exceder expectativas. El éxito para mí es cuando doy lo mejor en el trabajo cada día, trato a todos con quienes me relaciono con respeto y luego regreso a casa, a mi amorosa familia y amigos, quienes me traen felicidad y a cuyas vidas impacto de una manera positiva. Es ser positivo, empero realista. Es sentirte seguro y “rico” en el sentido de las bendiciones que tengo en este mundo (familia, amigos, el trabajo que me gusta, un techo sobre mi cabeza). ¿CUÁLES SON LOS PRINCIPALES RETOS DE LA INDUSTRIA EN LA ACTUALIDAD? MENCIONA, POR FAVOR, ALGUNAS DE LAS MEJORES MANERAS EN QUE PODEMOS ABORDARLOS.

La escasez de conductores es un asunto serio en la actualidad. Los choferes están abandonando la industria de las mudanzas debido a mermas de salario y la estacionalidad del trabajo. Las compañías de carga están pagando más y el trabajo es menos oneroso. Es increíblemente importante encontrar maneras de incrementar nuestros márgenes y mantener el trabajo todo el año. Otro reto son los competidores no tradicionales que están llegando con tecnología fresca e interfaces prometedores.

Están intentando llevarse parte de la tajada de clientes corporativos cuando los márgenes de por sí ya se encuentran tan bajos. Necesitamos hacer énfasis en los activos que tenemos como empresas de mudanzas –la gente, los camiones y los almacenes. Las empresas de tecnología aún no ofrecen estos activos tangibles que son, y siempre serán, un requisito para alguien que desea mudarse. ¿Podremos asociarnos con estas empresas de tecnología y/o adquirirlas para nuestro uso? Eso sería ideal. Otro reto es adaptarnos lo más rápido posible para hacer que los millennials se muden con nosotros. En la actualidad, ellos se mudan frecuentemente, pero cuentan con muy pocas pertenencias y, ya sea que no conocen los nombres de las empresas mudanceras de servicio completo, o no están dispuestos a pagar por sus servicios. Necesitamos crear una marca millennial que sea tecnológicamente avanzada y pueda eliminar los dolores de cabeza de la idea de mudarse, a fin de que la conveniencia del proceso cubra con facilidad los costos adicionales de contratar a un mudancero de servicio completo. También necesitamos promovernos mejor entre los milennials para darnos a conocer.

He sido muy afortunado de visitar muchos países. En Europa, he estado en el Reino Unido, Alemania, Italia, Francia y Países Bajos.

También he estado en República Dominicana, México, Jamaica y Canadá. ¿QUÉ SIGNIFICA SER UN JOVEN PROFESIONAL EN EL S. XXI?

Esta es una época muy emocionante para ser un profesional joven. La generación de los millennials acaba de convertirse en el segmento más grande de la fuerza laboral, y las nuevas ideas y actitudes que traemos ayudará a forjar el futuro de la economía global. El entorno de trabajo está cambiando, debido a los ideales, expectativas y fortalezas de la generación milénica, pero tenemos mucho que aprender de aquellos que forjaron el camino delante de nosotros y crearon los éxitos de hoy. ¿CUÁL ES SU IMPRESIÓN DE LATINOAMÉRICA, TANTO CULTURAL COMO EMPRESARIALMENTE?

Latinoamérica posee una hermosa cultura que se enorgullece de su historia, familias y arduo trabajo. La cultura era muy cálida y receptora de turistas cuando visité República Dominicana y México.

Hay una amplia historia asociada a la cultura, y es claro que los latinoamericanos se sienten orgullosos de sus raíces. También es muy aparente que los latinoamericanos se enorgullecen de su trabajo, al igual que de lo que han alcanzado. Si bien es cierto que la clave es el trabajo duro, respeto y admiro grandemente el énfasis que le dan los latinos a la familia y el tiempo que dedican a pasar tiempo juntos.

Espero poder comprender más sobre la cultura y conectarme con socios en toda Latinoamérica. ¿LIBRO FAVORITO Y QUÉ LECCIONES APRENDIÓ DE ÉL?

Les comentaré de un libro que acabo de terminar de leer: “Shoe Dog”. Trata de Phil Knight, fundador y presidente de Nike, y es la historia del inicio de la compañía en su cochera y de todas las pruebas y dificultades que sufrió en el camino. Enseña sobre su gran persistencia y emprendimiento, y de cómo el trabajo duro es el denominador común de cualquier historia de éxito. Se lo recomendaría a todos.

ast October, I had the chance to spend a week at Hilldrup’s headquarters in Stafford, Virginia. The entire experience turned out to be extremely enriching, both personally as well as for my professional development in the international moving industry.

I recall arriving extremely nervous the first day, a feeling that disappeared almost immediately after meeting the company’s team, and which made me feel special upon arrival. My hosts prepared a complete induction for me, which included visiting the various work areas with the purpose of getting to know the team members and their duties. I visited the warehouses, got acquainted with the moving software the company uses, and returned to Peru with innovative ideas I will be able to apply at my own company.

It was interesting to compare a moving company in the United States with a Peruvian counterpart, and I understood there are many more things we have in common than there are differences. The process in an international move is the same.

Communication is the base of our business, and we need to be in constant communication with clients, accounts, agents, and associates to yield the best results. In addition, clients are difficult! I believe that, around the world, moving companies frequently deal with extremely nervous clients, who often do not comprehend we are focused on providing them with quality service, and that there are factors in the process that do not depend on us. This, nevertheless, makes each day different from the rest, in addition to rendering the development of boredom virtually impossible in this industry.

Hilldrup is a family-owned business, just as Express Transports, although the main difference between both companies is that the former is transitioning to the fourth generation. Jordan and Charlie, the children of Charles Mc Daniel, the company’s current CEO, started to work in the company last year, just like I did. That week we shared perceptions, experiences and tips amongst ourselves with regards to the business.

I wouldn’t like to end this article without inviting all companies to engage in this exchange program offered by LACMA. We work in an international industry, I don’t think there is a better way to take advantage of it than this one.

UNOS DíAS EN HILLDRUP El pasado mes de octubre, tuve la oportunidad de pasar una semana en las oficinas de Hilldrup en Stafford, Virginia. Toda la experiencia fue sumamente enriquecedora, tanto para mí como persona, así como también para mi desarrollo profesional en la industria de las mudanzas internacionales.

Recuerdo haber llegado sumamente nerviosa el primer día, nervios que desaparecieron casi de inmediato al conocer al equipo con que cuenta la empresa. Desde que llegué, me hicieron sentir especial. Mis anfitriones prepararon una inducción completa, que incluyó visitas a las distintas áreas a fin de conocer al equipo y las funciones de cada uno.

Visité sus almacenes, aprendí el programa de mudanzas que utilizan y regresé al Perú con ideas innovadoras que podré aplicar en mi propia empresa.

Fue interesante hacer el paralelo entre una empresa de mudanzas en Estados Unidos y una en Perú, y comprendí que son muchas más las cosas que tenemos en común que las que nos hacen diferentes. El proceso de una mudanza internacional es el mismo.

La comunicación es la base de nuestro negocio. Con clientes, cuentas, agentes o colaboradores tenemos que estar en constante comunicación para que el resultado sea el mejor. Y además… ¡los clientes son difíciles! En todas partes del mundo creo que las empresas de mudanzas nos enfrentamos a clientes sumamente nerviosos, que muchas veces no comprenden que estamos muy enfocados en brindarles un servicio de calidad, pero que hay factores del proceso que no dependen de nosotros. No obstante, esto hace que todos nuestros días sean diferentes y que aburrirse en esta industria sea imposible.

NEW CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER Arpin Group (USA) has appointed its chief legal officer, Marco P. Uriati, to the position of chief operating officer. Uriati will retain both titles.

Uriati has served as chief legal officer since 2014, as general counsel since 2007, and previously as outside legal counsel beginning in 1999.

In addition to his role as COO, Uriati is the current chairman of the Arpin Group management committee. He is licensed to practice law in the State of Rhode Island, the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island, the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, and the Supreme Court of the United States of America.

Uriati currently resides in Barrington, Rhode Island.

After three years of construction, Atlantis’s (Brazil) new facilities are now operational, the official move taking place on November 14th.

The new facilities offer over 4,000 square meters of partly climatized storage space, 400 square meters modern offices and 200 square meters devoted to carpentry workshops.

They are situated 20 minutes from Barra de Tijuca, where 70% of the expats in Rio de Janeiro live, 10 minutes from the port of Itaguai, and 30 minutes from the port and airport of Rio de Janeiro.

In the bid to raise money for Children in Need, Steve decided to take up the challenge of walking to work.

When leaving home at 7.45 a.m. on Thursday to begin the trek Steve was met by brilliant sunshine; however, just two hours later, the weather conditions turned nasty and he was required to battle through a torrential down pour.

Stopping only for a warm flask of soup, Steve persisted as conditions worsened resulting in the normally pleasant canal paths becoming difficulty to navigate. Nine hours after setting off, Steve stopped off at a near-by hotel for refreshments and a well-deserved break.

The next morning Steve set off for the final leg of the journey, but just as he did, the heavens opened once again, but instead of rain this time Steve encountered hail and snow. As the Liverpool skyline came into view, the weather cleared up and for the final few miles the sun decided to make an appearance.

After walking for 13 hours, Steve arrived at the John Mason International office just after lunchtime on Friday greeted by colleagues who were ready to congratulate him on his fantastic achievement.

“As this was my last opportunity to raise funds for Children in Need as a member of the John Mason team, instead of driving to work I decided an excellent way to mark the occasion would be to make the trek by foot,” said Steve.

“I am a keen rambler and often spend my time away from the office exploring the countryside and on walking holidays, so I thought this would be a reasonable challenge. It wasn’t easy as I’d thought due to having to contend with a mixture of persistent rain, wind, thunder and lightning and hail. I now have blisters on both feet and two very stiff legs. Ulrich Weichert and Rüdiger Dahlweg began their apprenticeships at Rosebrock (Germany) 40 years ago, in August 1976. Both have continuously worked for the company since then. Mr. Weichert’s career began in the accounting department, whose head he later became. As of 1 July 2001, Mr. Weichert has been General Manager. Since successfully completing his apprenticeship, Mr. Dahlweg has been working in the Overseas Department and is currently managing director commercial household goods and DoS/GSA traffic.

He played a significant role in developing a global network of international partners within the company.

Ulrich Weichert y Rüdiger Dahlweg empezaron sus pasantías en Rosebrock (Alemania) hace 40 años, en agosto de 1976. Ambos han laborado continuamente para la empresa desde entonces.

Spanish is now the second most spoken language in the US and Latin American companies makeup some of the firm’s most important partnerships.

Following its quest for constant growth in the marketplace, the company recently conducted a poll to find out whether its employees were interested in taking part in a Spanish immersion course. The response was an overwhelming YES!

Continuando con su búsqueda de constante crecimiento en el mercado, la empresa condujo recientemente un sondeo a fin de averiguar si sus empleados estaban interesados en tomar un curso de inmersión en español. La respuesta fue un contundente ¡Sí!

Most of the prospective students had taken Spanish courses in other classroom settings in the past and agreed it was difficult to learn language skills that were useful outside of a classroom setting and applicable to real-world social and business situations. Wanting to avoid a rigid classroom setting the company’s management opted for a slightly non-traditional option and found a course with a “Learn by Speaking” philosophy and a teacher with great enthusiasm to match.

There were a variety of reasons people wanted to take the course – everything from improving business and personal communications to wooing a companion. Although there was an emphasis on understanding the basics such as sentence structure, common words, etc. the pressure was off to strictly memorize material and because of this, participants learned to focus on genuine communication as well as the Hispanic culture.

With the course now complete, many participants stroll through the office proudly showing off their new or improved language skills. The company is even contemplating a new language course in the not-so-distant future!

As we can now proudly say in Spanish, ¡Una vez que aprendes a hablar Español, aprendes a amar el idioma! (Once you learn to speak Spanish, you learn to love the language!)

La mayoría de los futuros estudiantes había tomado cursos en español en otros entornos de aprendizaje en el pasado, y estuvo de acuerdo en que era difícil aprender destrezas linguísticas que fuesen útiles y aplicables a situaciones sociales y empresariales del mundo real fuera de un salón de clases. Deseando evitar el rígido ambiente de un aula, la gerencia de la empresa escogió una opción un tanto menos tradicional, y descubrió un curso con la filosofía de “Aprende Mientras Hablas”, y un maestro de gran entusiasmo acorde con la metodología.

Hubo una variedad de razones por las que las personas deseaban tomar el curso –desde mejorar sus comunicaciones empresariales y personales, hasta atraer una pareja. Aunque hubo énfasis en la comprensión de puntos básicos como la estructura de las oraciones, palabras comúnes, etc., no hubo presión para memorizar el material de manera estricta y, debido a esto, los participantes aprendieron a enfocarse en la comunicación genuina, al igual que en la cultura hispana. Con la conclusión del curso, muchos participantes ahora se pasean por las oficinas, demostrando orgullosamente sus nuevas o mejoradas destrezas linguísticas. La empresa contempla, inclusive, ¡lanzar un nuevo curso en un futuro próximo!

Y, como ahora podemos decir en el idioma de Cervantes, ¡Una vez que aprendes a hablar español, aprendes a amar el idioma!

Starting two years ago and as part of its social policy and commitment, the personnel of Portan (Colombia) donates 120 liters of milk on a monthly basis to Fundación Ayuda por Colombia, which aids low-income children with daily meals.

Each month, one of the company’s departments takes charge of a fund-raising activity for the purchase of milk. Last September, the month during which the Day of Love and Friendship is observed in Colombia, the General Management took charge of the responsibility by selling over 700 muffins amongst the personnel. In addition to contributing to a social cause, the initiative was definitely an amusing activity of integration, since each employee was able to show their friendship and appreciation to their colleagues through a simple act of kindness.

Following a tradition started 5 years ago, Portan (Colombia) organized its department-wide Halloween costume & décor contest. The main condition required for the contest was the use recycled packing materials (80%).

Como ya es tradición desde hace 5 años, Portan (Colombia) realizó su concurso de Halloween de decoración y disfraces por departamentos. La principal condición requerida fue la utilización de materiales de empaque reciclados (80%).

This year, the activity included themes such as Star Wars, icon characters of the 1970’s, and horror-film icons of the ‘90s. The best costume was “Armstrong, the Astronaut”, and the best décor scheme was that of the export department: “horror-film icons of the ‘90s.”

TIPPET-RICHARDSON CONTRIBUTES TO THE SAVING OF CANCERTHREATENED LIVES IN CANADA

By Chandra Naylor Perhaps nothing expresses customer appreciation and company pride in our industry than being a part of relocating life-saving medical equipment.

TIPPET-RICHARDSON (Vancouver, Canada) recently had the opportunity to relocate two state-of-the-art cancer treatment machines (known colloquially as cell-washing machines,) one coming from Japan and the other, from the US. The equipment was delivered to the Conconi Immunotherapy Lab in Victoria, BC, Canada. These machines are the first of their kind in Canada, and are used to fight various cancers by capturing unhealthy white blood cells, isolating and sterilizing them, and returning them to the body by intravenous.

These machines are not only massive in size (weighing 9000 lbs. each once assembled), requiring several ton trucks to move them, but are also highly sensitive and therefore very challenging to transport, assemble and install.

Asked about the highlight of this relocation, John Gowans, Commercial Relocation Specialist at TIPPETRICHARDSON, who supervised the loading, transport and installation, replied: “The biggest highlight of the job was “no highlight”. We got 18,000 pounds of huge, extremely sensitive and expensive equipment into the 3rd floor lab of a busy cancer treatment center, over 2 days, and during business hours. We did it quietly, efficiently and without disturbing and upsetting the patients and their families, who were all around us, and didn’t really notice what we were up to, that was by design.”

TIPPET-RICHARDSON (Vancouver, Canadá) tuvo recientemente la oportunidad de trasladar dos máquinas ultramodernas para el tratamiento de cáncer (conocidas como lavadoras de células); una, procedente de Japón, y la otra, de Estados Unidos. Estas máquinas fueron entregadas al Laboratorio de Inmunoterapia Conconi de Victoria, Columbia Británica, Canadá. Dicho equipo es el primero de su tipo en Canadá, y es utilizado para combatir varios tipos de cáncer mediante la captura de células blancas enfermas, su aislamiento y esterilización, y su retorno al cuerpo por vía intravenosa.

Las máquinas no son solo de gran tamaño (pesando 9000 libras cada una, una vez armadas) requiriendo de varios camiones grandes para trasladarlas, sino altamente sensibles y, por ende, muy difíciles de transportar, armar e instalar.

Al preguntársele sobre el punto cúspide de la operación, John Gowans, Especialista de Relocation Comercial de TIPPETRICHARDSON, quien supervisó la carga, transporte e instalación, contestó: “El punto cúspide de la misión no fue “cúspide”. Tuvimos que trasladar 18,000 libras de equipo de tamaño colosal y extremadamente delicado y costoso al tercer piso de un concurrido centro oncológico, en más de 2 días y durante horas laborales. Lo hicimos sin ruido, eficientemente y sin afectar o incomodar a los pacientes y sus familias, quienes estaban en todas partes, y quienes realmente no se fijaban en lo que hacíamos, y todo esto fue por diseño”.

Mackenzie is one of the fourth generations of Naylor’s now making their presence known at the company. She is the youngest greatgranddaughter of Russell Naylor who began his career as Operations Manager before buying control of the company in the ’60’s.
