FROM OUR PRESIDENT WALTER LAFFITTE - CANAL MOVERS & LOGISTICS, CORP. - PANAMA

In this year´s last edition, we will cover issues regarding our upcoming Convention in the majestic city of Santa Fe of Bogota, Colombia. We have a very interesting program with a panel on “Compliance, why is it so important?”. This panel will be integrated by executives of important companies that manage large global contracts for multinational companies where compliance is a fundamental component for the development of their contracts and services. Given its laws and regulations, compliance raises its demands and complexity. We invite you to participate in this very interesting panel. As part of our Convention program, we have an important Colombian speaker who will motivate us and will make us reflect with his impressive presentation titled: “We believe in Colombia and Latin America”. You can’t miss it! Colombia is a country of 48 million people, who are well known for their kindness, culture and work. Despite being a country of great diversity and many natural attractions, its best asset is its people.

LACMANews Magazine

The city of Santa Fe of Bogota has a population of more than 8 million inhabitants. The city is well known for its green parks and great museums. The JW Marriott hotel convention is located in the gastronomic district where you will be able to enjoy the best bars and restaurants in the city. I invite you to visit them. LACMA continues with its evolution. The LACMA Board continues working with the Strategic Plan and its development for the improvement and strength of the association. Next year, we will see more and better seminars, virtual and on-site, more concise and less repetitive communications and more membership participation. This is the direct result of the development of the Strategic Plan that the LACMA Board and the Secretaiat have been implementing. Our region is growing… Latin America is LACMA! I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year full of health and peace.

FROM OUR GENERAL MANAGER EVELYN DE JAÉN

It has been a very busy year. We performed four on-site seminars, two in the Dominican Republic and the last two in Sao Paulo Brazil, completely in Portuguese, with excellent results! I want to thank the members in Brazil - Atlantis Intl., G-Inter Transportes, Gerson & Grey, Metropolitan Transports y Trasportes FINK and from Portugal, Global Int. Relocation - who participated and that are committed to investing on their employees to provide better services to their clients and agents. To be competitive in the moving industry, you must invest in your employees, training and educating them, as they are a company’s best asset. Two programs that surged from the Strategic Plan developed a couple years ago are already functioning! One of them is the LACMA Contact...by now, every company has assigned their contact name for LACMA. These are the people who will receive all the communications sent by the LACMA Secretariat, who will read them and transmit them to the respective departments within their companies. The role of the LACMA Contact is very important as it is through this person that you will become aware of membership cancellations, suspensions, expulsions, new members, personnel and office changes, deaths, seminars, conventions, etc. All the 14

LACMANews Magazine

LACMA communications will be sent to this person... Be sure to be informed by assigning a good LACMA Contact! The other program already functioning is the LACMA Rewards Program.... LACMA members who participated in seminars, convention and who have advertised in the magazine and/or directory, have accumulated points, which will may be redeemed as of now, in convention and future seminars. We already have companies which have obtained discounts in their convention registrations using their accumulated points in 2015. Visit our website, review your points and use them; remember they are available for two calendar years. In a couple of months, we will be all reunited in Bogota, Colombia... it will be a beautiful experience, don’t miss it! I wish all of you a lovely Christmas in the company of family, surrounded by love and peace and may the greatest gifts for 2016 be good health and well-being.

Managing third party risk is the biggest challenge in the field of bribery. The second one is, dealing with variations in national regulations. Compliance officers have a huge role not only analyzing who the company is, but also the individuals behind it and how they do business. Here are some key things we can do to enforce anti-bribery and anti-corruption:

1

Create a formal anti-bribery and corruption com- THE WORLD IS CHANGING AND pliance program: Cascade it to third parties, train BUSINESS CONDUCT NEEDS TO people to follow the policies at the level where indi- CHANGE ALONG. vidual are asked to pay bribes.

2

Translate anti-bribery and corruption policies and procedures into multiples languages (specially the ones you do business): It is important to make yourself clear in these countries. Communication is an essential part of preventing corruption due to misunderstandings.

3

Conduct specific data analysis to identify potential violations: Prevention is the most cost-effective tool. Monitoring data analytics helps determine possible suspicious activity.

There is still a long way to go to attack appropriately bribery and corruption. We can start by creating conscious ethical behavior to our employees, specifically those in key roles that can be bribed.

The company Vale is the largest producer of iron and nickel in the world, with a market value of 140.000 million USD and offices in countries such as: China, Argentina, Colombia, Japan, Mozambique and Peru. Meanwhile, BHP is one of the largest mining companies and was created from the merger of the Australian company Broken Hill Proprietary and the British company Billiton. Both companies share equally the property of Samarco, the Brazilian miner to whom this damage was attributed.

Protests The protests by environmentalists and social activist against Vale and BHP generated several altercations; the most notable was in the Congress, where protesters threw mud in the hallways of the building recreating what happened in the Doce river. They also displayed banners with messages like: “Vale is a Terrorist” and “Mining = Death”. On the other hand, at Rio de Janeiro, the protest outside Vale’s offices also included several people covered with mud. President Rousseff demanded that the large companies assume the responsibility for the damages. Until now, it is estimated that the companies have received more than $170 million USD in penalties. The truth is that with this event, Brazil has considered strengthening penalties against environmental crimes, that, more than affecting fauna and flora, affect enormously the economy of those fishermen from Minas Gerais, who will have to wait until this disaster passes to evaluate the conditions of their sources of income.

That was how all started. It was cold and the fog wet our clothes. Our expectation were transformed at that time in the greatest motivation of life. We left at seven o’clock to face the way, the life and the surprises we would find each day.

STARTING THE ROAD COMENZANDO EL CAMINO Before starting the Road we should register at one of the dioceses at the origin or at the “Friend of the Road” Association. There is a help desk for pilgrims where they issued a sort of passport which you show every time you cross a village, at the shelter, church or chapel. At the end of the road in Santiago de Compostela this passport showed that the task of reaching the Cathedral was completed. In the first stage of the way we had to arrive to Logroño. It was a week walking, 26 to 29 km per day. We cross villages and cities like Pamplona where by that time was in the euphoria of the bulls. Most of the shelters were full, we were at a very clean hostel with air conditioning. The cost did not exceeded 20-30 euros for two with breakfast.

The smells and flavors we experienced when passing through every town was delightful a different spectacle at every place, at every cathedral ... In the first section we cross Navarre and the land of the wine: Rioja. Every day was the same ritual but different lands, roads and places made special each day. At each town or city we had to cross it all to the end to find the destination point. Many times we stayed at the exit to avoid walked the city at the beginning of the next day. With 40 degrees, plenty of sunshine and very thirsty we arrived at Logroño.

SECOND STAGE NEXT YEAR Dressed as pilgrims we took the bus from Barcelona to Logrono at 11pm. We arrived at 5 am, there was no one in the streets. With flashlights we trying to find the way to begin the pilgrimage. Finally, we found the small passageways route, other flashlights appear and followed the same road. This second stage to Leon was very hard. We crossed Najera, Santo Domingo de la Calzada, San Juan de Ortega and finally Burgos. The arrival to Burgos was beautiful, the roads, squares and the Cathedral which is one of the most wonderful buildings of the Gothic art. In this city they surprised us with sausages stuffed with rice, an exclusive dish of the place. The arrival in Leon was full of joy and excitement. The third stage was very different.

THIRD STAGE Last year the whole group traveled from Barcelona to Santiago with a small suitcase and our Pilgrim luggage. We left in storage the suitcase and take the bus to Leon for the journey to Santiago de Compostela. A complete logistics task. The next day we started the trip and found a more challenged way, with soft but hard hillsides. The walk sticks were our permanent support. With intermittent rains we were looking for shelter at any place we could find. We bought raincoats on the way and the nice temperatures allowed us to continue to meet the itineraries we had arranged.

There were surprises and troubles. After 10 days of walking we begin to see Santiago, our ultimate goal. We seek to be credited for our pilgrimage; those documents were like a trophy for spent more than 30 days walking 774 kilometers. That day we had no mass. The mythical “Botafumeiro” that walked each wings of the Cathedral with incense was held the next day of our arrival. It was a big event. I cannot express enough my satisfaction and joy. All around us, all the pilgrims with backpacks and walking sticks joined in hugs and joyfully.

THE ROAD TO SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA CHANGED MY MIND, MY LIFESTYLE, MY HUMOR. IT CURED MY ILLS AND I DON’T HAVE TO TAKE PILLS ANYMORE.

Recognizing a great service is

not negotiable.

Our industry day to day is not complete if we don’t recognize that we need to focus on customer service and much less if we don’t reflect it. Not encouraging it in our personal life, and in our work environment, is like walking with a stone in the shoe. Some weeks ago, I went to the movies with my nephew, half an hour later I realized that I left my wallet in the seat at the movies, luckily me it was the last show. I went back to get it and couldn’t find it. Disappointed, I walked to the movie’s exit and all the sudden, I saw on the Security’s counter…there was my wallet! Minutes later, I left a message in their Facebook page, telling them that I was grateful and congratulating them and their personnel for their values and principles. Unfortunately, of the 25 posts on the page, my comment was the only positive one, the other ones where all kinds of complains. Why cant we be more grateful with the good services?, I though. In order to really improve the quality of our services, we need to recognize and appreciate those who give it to us. Recognition, makes you, as well as those who provide 50

a service, feel satisfied and show it with a great smile, write a note, share your comments with the manager or supervisor, send an email, write a tweet, a blog or post it on Facebook. When we recognize someone for his or her great service, this attitude starts to go from one person to another. Improve the service in your personal life, and you will notice a change in those who surround you. It doesn’t matter if it is your hair styler, mechanic, the waiter who serves you coffee… Tell them how good they do their job! The year ends, and I urge you to set better goals. LACMA Bogota, the TECHO Activity, the convention and the fabulous party await us. What do you say…. Will we see you there?

LACMANext…where the best generation is yet to come!

¡LACMANext... Donde la mejor generación está por venir!

LacmaNext friends, At the last Lacma Convention in Montevideo, Uruguay, we had the great opportunity to participate in a project with TECHO. In my case, it was the first time attending TECHO; and was something new, which marked my life. I can remember the joyful face of children waiting for us, the expectations of families who were there, knowing in two days their lives would change a little, even minimal conditions, would become a little better. TECHO changes lives, not just those people lives, but also each one of us who participated. LACMANEXT HAS THIS MAGICAL POWER, GENERATED IN YOUNG PEOPLE FROM OUR BUSINESS AND THE WILLINGNESS TO CARRY OUT A PROJECT THAT WILL CHANGE YOUR OWN LIVES FOREVER. Well, 2016 is coming and we will have again this opportunity, now in Bogota, Colombia. Some friends from Europe, US also South America are already buying tickets to Colombia, considering dates before convention just to participate in this project with TECHO. That demonstrates great enthusiasm. For those who never participated with TECHO before, this is the opportunity! Come and bring with you, in addition to comfortable clothes, shoes and sunscreen, bring also a portion of love, joy and hope, and be sure families will be ready to receive it all. Surely you will change someone’s life forever, but your action will change also your life too. 52

Helping people in need, working to-

gether for a good cause, networking with agents and on top of that having lots of fun – how good does that sound? The days before the LACMA convention in Uruguay this February were a combination of all those things. In collaboration with the NGO TECHO, the LACMA Next group organized a two day activity near Montevideo with the goal to build five houses in a precarious settlement.

We were approximately 45 people, divided into five groups. I was lucky to be in a great team with old and new friends - but more importantly, the task was to build a small wooden house (approx. 20 square meters) for a lovely couple aged in their 60’s, who desperately needed a clean space as the husband would undergo surgery in the very near future. They welcomed us with pizza (who doesn’t love breakfast pizza!), mate tea (all day long) and after a short introduction, the house owner put the music on full volume and did not turn it off until we left. Building the houses was a challenge for the not so experienced crews of “construction workers”, still everybody did a great job following the instructions of the NGO members and everybody was motivated by the wonderful atmosphere. All worked out perfectly, some were better using the shovel, others showed talent with the hand saw, some were there to carry the wood and others to chat with the house owners… the workload was perfect, all houses stood steady in the end. The result was inspected with tired eyes, but a great feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment. I believe no one ended up having nightmares about collapsing houses, but fell into a sweet sleep that evening! And finally - what would the project have meant without seeing the reaction of the owners? The handing over of the new houses and seeing how much a small place can mean for those who have little, left a lasting impression on everyone.

NOTHING MATTERED, BUT THE FACT THAT WE HAD ACCOMPLISHED THIS AS A TEAM, DID HARD WORK FOR SUCH A GOOD CAUSE - MEETING GREAT PEOPLE AND BEING ABLE TO NETWORK WAS A GREAT BY-PRODUCT. THIS IS WHAT MAKES OUR JOB SOMETIMES SO SPECIAL.

Ayudar a personas necesitadas, trabajar

THOMAS SCHREINER

INTERDEAN, S.A. - SPAIN

LACMANews Magazine

Friend: “Really… You Fly To Cape Town To Talk With Other Movers About What… Trucks And Boxes?” Me: “Exactly.”

Yo: “Para Una Conferencia De Agentes De Mudanzas Internacionales” Amigo: “¿En Serio?...Viajaste A Cape Town Para Hablar Con Otros Agentes Sobre ¿Qué?... ¿Camiones Y Cajas?” Yo: “Exactamente”

When people ask me what I

do, I always tell them that I’m a mover. This often leads to an amused chuckle, and more questions surrounding the travelling that i do for work. I’ve had the conversation many times, and it generally goes something like this:

Amigo: “Eres Un Agente De Mudanzas. ¿Por Qué Estabas En Cape Town?”

Obviously there is much more to my business travel than talking about trucks and boxes, but I have to admit that I enjoy watching people process my short answers with a slightly confused expression. I attempted to explain it in more detail once or twice, but totally lost my audience at the first mention of a shipping container. Their attention was gone forever.

The LACMA Conference in Bogota is approaching, and returning to Colombia will provide me with the opportunity to further confuse my friends. More importantly, I look forward solidifying the essential relationships that assist my company in providing excellent service to our customers in Latin America, and the Caribbean.

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AT WORK INTELIGENCIA EMOCIONAL EN EL TRABAJO

By Caroline Mason

E

motional Intelligence (EI or EQ) is becoming more and more prevalent in discussions regarding workplace effectiveness. The topic also appears in some hiring and recruitment discussions. Many companies naturally want to hire people who will be able to get on well with others and be a team player. One way to measure this is looking at a person’s emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence involves managing your own emotions as well as understanding the emotions of others around you. A high EI can lead to more successful and productive relationships at work as well as helping you to achieve your goals. In the moving and relocation industry, emotional intelligence plays an important role during the customer service process. Being able to truly empathise with your customers and clients and understand what they really need provides many companies with a competitive edge. This is particularly important when dealing with a range of people from different cultures and when a customer or client’s wants or needs may not be obvious. There are many ways for individuals to improve their emotional intelligence. In some situations, you can try to put yourself in the other person’s shoes and think about how his/her may be feeling. Many organisations are now teaching their staff how to improve their EI with positive outcomes for the organisation as a whole. 56

LACMANews Magazine

L

JOHN MASON’S MOVING GANG: FAMILIAR FACES TO MOVE THE WHOLE FAMILY

The Moving Gang is a collec-

tion of four friendly characters designed to appeal to the whole family. Each one is happy with their living situation but has adapted – for the better. Monty Moose, in Canada, loves ice hockey but has had to get used to the cold. Kev Koala enjoys Australia’s warm climate so much he’s more likely to be found on the beach than up a tree. Stanley the Bear is a sleepy, friendly fellow, who spends his life moving from cave to cave across the United States, with each move resulting in him finding the ideal spot to hibernate. While Khloe Kiwi, the only girl in the gang, has found a common interest to bond with the others: she loves

rugby in her new home country New Zealand. The Moving Gang characters were all named by John Mason customers in a competition and will feature on the new company website, on special moving day activity sheets for children and they will be available as cuddly toys. “The Moving Gang are a bit of fun, but they reflect the fact we pride ourselves on looking after the entire family when relocating them,” said Noel Briscoe, John Mason’s Chief Operating Officer.
