Editors The year 2013 was not particularly the most eventful in terms of world economic progress and, as a matter of fact, apart from the slight improvement of the United States in this regard, the overall vibrancy of the emerging economies, including a number of Latin American markets, seems to be slowing down, with a large part of Europe still struggling with recession and unemployment.

Does this mean bad news for our industry in this part of the world? Not necessarily, since according to most economic variables (not counting the increasing effects of climate change), the price of commodities such as crude oil and its byproducts will be decreasing sharply throughout 2014. On the other hand, although major contracts from the north seem to be more elusive nowadays, Latin American moving and relocation companies should play close attention to the increasing wave of im-

migration from southern Europe to this part of the world – a generation of young professionals who could trigger a considerable movement of families in the near future (their relatives and friends), providing the economic situation doesn’t improve in coming months or years.

Leaving this subject for another time, please allow us to remind you that our next convention, which will take place in beautiful Costa Rica, is less than two months away! We have devoted an entire section of this issue to our host country in order to motivate each and every member to start packing as we speak!

And last, but not least, ‘tis the season to give thanks for all of our blessings and enjoy some good times with family and friends. We take this opportunity to wish you a wonderful Christmas season, as well as a new year filled with prosperity, health and joy for all!

El año 2013 no fue particularmente el más activo en lo que respecta al progreso de la economía mundial y, de hecho, aparte de la leve mejoría que ha experimentado Estados Unidos en este sentido, la pujanza general de las economías emergentes, incluyendo la de algunos mercados latinoamericanos, parece estarse desacelerando, con buena parte de Europa luchando aún con la recesión y el desempleo. ¿Significa esto malas noticias para nuestra industria en esta parte del mundo? No necesariamente, ya que, de acuerdo a la mayoría de variables económicas (sin contar los crecientes efectos del cambio climático), el precio de los “commodities”, tales como el petróleo y sus derivados, estará bajando considerablemente durante 2014. Por otro lado, aunque los grandes contratos procedentes del norte parezcan más evasivos en estos días, las empresas de mudanzas y relocation latinoamericanas deberían prestarle más atención a la creciente ola migratoria del sur de Europa a esta parte del mundo

–una generación de jóvenes profesionales que podría generar un movimiento considerable de familias en el futuro cercano (los familiares y amigos de éstos), siempre y cuando no mejore la situación económica en los próximos meses o años.

Dejando atrás este tema para otra ocasión, favor permítannos recordarles que nuestra próxima convención, que se llevará a cabo en la hermosa Costa Rica, ¡se realizará en menos de dos meses! Hemos dedicado toda una sección de esta edición a nuestro país anfitrión con el fin de motivar a cada uno de nuestros miembros ¡a empacar sus maletas desde ya!

Por último, ha llegado la época de dar gracias por nuestras bendiciones y disfrutar buenos tiempos con nuestros familiares y amigos. Tomamos esta oportunidad para desearles una ¡maravillosa temporada navideña, al igual que un nuevo año lleno de prosperidad, salud y dicha para todos!

En los últimos meses del año (Septiembre, en Panamá y noviembre, en Lima, Perú) hemos visto a dos nuevos capacitadores del LACMA TRAINING TEAM –LTT - (Miguel Florez, de Aviomar, Colombia, por segunda vez y Santiago Bosch de LIFTVAN, Argentina, por primera vez) desempeñarse como instructores en el Seminario Para Instructores de Embaladores y también en el Seminario Para Mandos Medios “Mudanzas de la A – Z”.

Realmente hemos quedado muy satisfechos con el desenvolvimiento de estos dos integrantes del LTT (LACMA Training Team). Creo que hemos dado un paso muy grande al tener un equipo voluntario, joven y conocedor de nuestra industria, al frente de nuestros seminarios. ¡Gracias, Miguel y Santiago!

También agradecemos a Luis Taja, quien desde hace ya muchos años, continúa como capacitador LACMA, tanto en seminarios presenciales como virtuales.

During the last months of the year, (September in Panama, and November, in Lima, Peru) we have witnessed two new members of the LACMA TRAINING TEAM –LTT – (Miguel Florez, of Aviomar, Colombia for the second time, and Santiago Bosch of LIFTVAN, Argentina, for the first) engaged in their duties as instructors at the Seminar for Packing Instructors and also the Seminar, “Moving from A-Z” for Middle Management Personnel. We are really satisfied with the performance of these two LTT (LACMA Training Team) members. I believe we have taken a huge step in having a team of young and industry-savvy volunteers in charge of our seminars. Thank you, Miguel and Santiago! We also want to thank Luis Taja, who has been a LACMA trainer for many years, both in on-site as well as in virtual seminars.

The recent on-site seminar in Peru exhibited a very special touch which, once again, leaves us with that warm, Latin imprint our region is known for, and which is difficult to imitate.

LACMA’s four Peruvian members, CLASS INTL., EXPRESS TRANSPORTS, SIM, and WORLD SHIPPING bid us farewell with a beautiful, typical Peruvian dinner. We were delighted by the delicious menu and Peruvian folklore, and it was surely pleasing to see the directors of the four companies together, enjoying in a friendly manner amongst themselves and the participants. Thank you, Peruvian LACMA members for such a warm and amusing... LACMA-style farewell!

El reciente seminario presencial en Perú tuvo un toque muy especial, el cual, una vez más, deja plasmada esa calidez latina, ingrediente propio de nuestra región, difícil de igualar. Los cuatro miembros LACMA del Perú, CLASS INTL., EXPRESS TRANSPORTS, SIM, y WORLD SHIPPING nos despidieron con una linda y típica cena peruana. La suculenta cocina y el folklore peruano nos deleitaron; fue realmente muy lindo ver a los directivos de las cuatro empresas unidos, disfrutando amigablemente entre ellos y los participantes. ¡Gracias miembros LACMA de Perú por esa despedida cálida y amena… muy al estilo LACMA! Entre los objetivos de la Junta Directiva está darle un giro actualizado a nuestros seminarios; el próximo año veremos seminarios virtuales nuevos y seminarios presenciales reestructurados. Recordemos que es nuestro objetivo brindar estas capacitaciones para beneficio de todos ustedes nuestros miembros, considerando que el entrenamiento que den es una manera de presentar sus empresas, políticas y cultura a empleados nuevos, como también aumenta la satisfacción de los empleados ya más antiguos. Además, es un elemento importante en la retención de personal.

One of the goals of the Board of Directors is to give an updated twist to our seminars. Next year we will see new virtual seminars as well as re-structured on-site trainings. Please remember that our objective is to offer these training services for the benefit of all of you, our members, considering that the training you receive is a way to introduce your companies, policies and culture to new employees, just as it increases the satisfaction levels of older employers. In addition, it is an important element in personnel retention.

And finally, I wholeheartedly wish you all a happy end-of-year holiday season. May it be filled with family unity, love... and forgiveness, as well as with sharing with the less fortunate.

A microcosm of diversity Established in 1972, Costa Rica’s Manuel Antonio National Park is undoubtedly the best known attraction of the Central Pacific region –a tribute to the strong determination of the Costa Rican people to preserve, for future generations, one of the most bio-diverse areas in the world. Although it is the country’s smallest national park, the stunning beauty and diversity of wildlife in its 683 hectares is unequaled. FONAFIFO

protecting our host country’s environment One of the best ways in which we can contribute to the wellbeing of our 2014 convention host country is by helping to protect its environment. And that’s precisely what LACMA has done through FONAFIFO, (a Costa Rican organization devoted to the protection of forested areas) for four consecutive years.

Many in our association are familiar with our “Clean Travel” conventions, through which we donate to FONAFIFO $5 for each ton of C02 produced during the voyage of members to and from the site of the convention. The funds produced by the activity are later used to reforest or preserve hundreds of hectares in Costa Rica, thus contributing to a much cleaner air and a healthier overall environment.

There is, however, a lot more to FONAFIFO than what we already know: What is FONAFIFO? Established in April of 1996, Fondo Nacional de Financiamiento Forestal (the National Forestry Financing Fund –FONAFIFO) was created to decentralize Costa

Una de las mejores maneras en que podemos contribuir con el bienestar del país anfitrión de nuestra convención 2014 es ayudando a proteger su medio ambiente. FONAFIFO’s main objective is to offer financing solutions to small and medium-sized businesspeople engaged in forest management, forestation, reforestation, forest nurseries, agro-forestry systems, and the industrial use of forest resources, among other related activities.

Managed by a five-member Board of Directors (with two of its directors hailing from the private sector and the remaining tree from the public sector), FONAFIFO is funded through Costa Rica’s national ordinary budget, in addition to income stemming from the country’s forestry tax system and a loan contract signed between the World Bank and the Costa Rican government.

Environmental Services Payment Program (PPSA) The Environmental Services Payment Program is the mechanism through which the entity manages, preserves and promotes the sustainable development of forest resources and biodiversity. The program is based on four main pillars: Institutionalism (The inclusion of a number of forest and environment-related organizations, local governments, NGO’s and private guilds into a single goal); Legal framework (FONAFIFO’s role in guaranteeing the legal functioning of the PPSA); financing activities and project monitoring.

El Programa por Pago de Servicios Ambientales (PPSA) El Programa por Pago de Servicios Ambientales es un mecanismo por el que la entidad administra, preserva y promueve el desarrollo sostenible de los recursos forestales y la biodiversidad. El programa está basado en cuatro pilares fundamentales: Institucionalidad (la inclusión de un número de organizaciones ambientales y forestales, gobiernos locales, ONGs y gremios privados en un sólo objetivo); marco legal (el papel de FONAFIFO para garantizar el funcionamiento legal del PPSA), actividades de financiamiento y monitoreo de proyectos.

Current FONAFIFO projects ECOMERCADO (“ECOMARKET”) A project designed, among other things, to increase forest conservation in Costa Rica, in addition to fostering the development of private markets and environmental service providers, and the mitigation of the production of greenhouse gases.

A well-invested project Starting in 2009, and for four consecutive years, LACMA has donated the proceeds of its “Clean Travel” conventions to FONAFIFO which, in turn, has invested the funds in reforestation/forest management projects in various locations throughout Costa Rica, including the buffer zone of La Amistad International Park (the management of 10 hectares for five years, ending in 2013), and the forests of a Native American reservation in Conte Burica (the management of over 10 hectares for an equal number of years).

Forging

tomorrow’s trainers

Last September (17-19), Panama City, Panama hosted the on-site Seminar for Packers’ Instructors.

Offered in the Spanish language by veteran LACMA trainer Luis Taja, (Exprinter Liftvans – Bolivia), the activity’s main purpose was to educate leaders from participating companies, in order to transform them into certified trainers themselves who, in turn, will help raise quality standards at their respective companies of origin.

The art of public speaking, in addition the development of positive inter-personal skills, were prominent on the seminar’s syllabus, allowing students to increase their knowledge though a series of interactive classes and workshops –all without neglecting the technical aspects of their future role as trainers.

As with other LACMA seminars, last September’s training program in Panama attracted 15 representatives from the departments of sales, traffic, and operations of Latin American and European companies: Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Panama, Portugal and Venezuela.

The seminar trains packing instructors who will, in turn, offer the course in their companies, in order to become LACMA Certified Packers. The certification is valid for two years and will be renewed automatically for similar periods indefinitely, providing members keep on their staff at least one instructor trained in LACMA’s workshops for trainers in Professional Training Techniques, in addition to other requirements.

Instructores del Mañana

El pasado mes de septiembre (del 17 al 19), la ciudad de Panamá fue la anfitriona del seminario presencial para Instructores de Embaladores.

Brindado en el idioma español por el veterano instructor de LACMA Luis Taja (Exprinter Liftvans – Bolivia), la actividad tuvo como propósito principal educar a líderes de las empresas participantes, con el fin de transformarlos en entrenadores certificados quienes, a su vez, ayudarán a elevar los estándares de calidad de sus respectivas empresas de origen.

El arte de hablar en público, además del desarrollo de destrezas interpersonales positivas, tuvieron un papel preponderante en el currículum del seminario, permitiendo a los estudiantes incrementar sus conocimientos a través de una serie de clases y talleres interactivos –todo sin olvidar los aspectos técnicos de su futuro rol como entrenadores.

Tal como ocurre con otros seminarios de LACMA, el programa de entrenamiento de septiembre pasado en Panamá atrajo a 15 personas de los departamentos de tráfico, operaciones y ventas de empresas 30

de América Latina y Europa: Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Panamá, Portugal y Venezuela.

El seminario forma instructores de embaladores, quienes impartirán el curso en sus empresas, a fin de obtener la certificación LACMA Certified Packers. Dicha certificación es válida por dos años y se renovará automáticamente por períodos similares, siempre y cuando los miembros mantengan en su personal a al menos un instructor entrenado en los talleres de Técnicas Profesionales de Embalaje de LACMA, además de otros requisitos.

Brazil’s import regulations

For the most part, imported goods do not require an Import License and are subject to automatic licensing within the System.

The movement of goods across borders is governed by laws and regulations with due penalties for failure of compliance.

Import regulations are intended to deter the entry of illegal and dangerous products. With the application of duties and fees, they also serve to protect domestic production of similar items or produce.

The Brazilian government controls its foreign trade transactions through an integrated computerized system known by its acronym, SISCOMEX. Introduced in 1993 for exports and expanded to include imports in 1997, SISCOMEX is administered by the Foreign Trade Secretariat (SECEX), Federal Revenue Secretariat, and the Central Bank of Brazil. The customs department falls under the jurisdiction of the Federal Revenue Secretariat of the Ministry of Finance.

SISCOMEX centralizes the flow of information between all government organs and banks involved in import/export operations. Online analyses of import operations registered within the System reduce the number of documents required and speed up the process.

Only importers or their representatives registered with the Registry of Exporters and Importers can access SISCOMEX. Registration is automatic with the importer’s first import operation. However, the writer recommends registration before shipment of goods as the existence of unpaid federal taxes will defer approval and delay customs clearance.

All merchandise entering Brazil, whether or not subject to import taxes, are inspected by customs at the port of entry.

The registration of the Import Declaration (DI) by the importer or his legal representative initiates the import process.

The DI should contain the complete names and addresses of the importer 32

and exporter, description of goods with their product classification numbers, the unit price and total value by product, and the origin of the goods.

The importer should next present supporting shipping documents to the customs officials at the port of entry. These documents include the Original Bill of Lading or Air Waybill; Original Commercial Invoice, signed by the exporter; Packing List, when applicable; and other documents, as required. The System calculates import taxes levied on the merchandise as well as other federal taxes applicable to the importation, and then debits the importer’s bank account for the amount due.

Imported goods not registered with SISCOMEX within 45 to 90 days following their arrival in the country are considered abandoned. Customs authorities then destroy or dispose of such imports in accordance with the law. Goods held for 60 days following an interruption in the import process also suffer the same fate.

This can occur when the importer fails to comply with customs requirements.

For the most part, imported goods do not require an Import License and are subject to automatic licensing within the System. Complete and correct documentation expedites clearance through customs within ten working days from the date of registration of the DI. However, some imports are subject to non-automatic licensing. They may also require approval from the competent government agency which controls the production and commercialization of certain products, such as food products and medicines. The importer should obtain the Import License(s) prior to shipment of goods. Failure to comply will result in a penalty. Generally, requests can take up to 60 days for approval and are valid for 60 days from date of shipment of goods to Brazil.

Goods costing US$3000 or less imported through the postal service or courier companies fall under the Simplified Taxation Regime (RTS). Customs applies a 60 percent tax rate over the invoice price plus shipping and insurance costs. When the value exceeds US$500, the importer must register a Simplified Import Declaration (DSI).

El movimiento de bienes a través de las fronteras es gobernado por leyes y reglamentos con las debidas penalidades en caso de desacato. Los reglamentos de importación tienen como propósito detener la entrada de productos ilegales y peligrosos. La aplicación de impuestos y cargos también sirven para proteger la producción nacional de artículos o alimentos similares.

El gobierno brasileño controla sus transacciones de comercio exterior mediante un sistema computarizado integrado conocido por sus siglas, SISCOMEX. Introducido en 1993 para las exportaciones, y expandido en 1997 para incluir las impor-

taciones, SISCOMEX es administrado por la Secretaría de Comercio Exterior (SECEX), la Secretaría Federal de Impuestos, y el Banco Central de Brasil. El departamento de aduanas se encuentra bajo la jurisdicción de la Secretaría Federal de Impuestos del Ministerio de Finanzas.

SISCOMEX centraliza el flujo de información entre todos los órganos del gobierno y bancos involucrados en operaciones de importación y exportación. Los análisis en línea de las operaciones de importación registrados dentro del sistema reducen el número de documentos requeridos y agilizan el proceso.

Sólo los importadores o sus representantes registrados en el Registro de Exportadores e Importadores pueden tener acceso a SISCOMEX. El registro es automático con la primera operación del importador. Sin embargo, la autora de este artículo recomienda el registro antes del embarco de bienes, ya que la existencia de impuestos federales no pagos evitará la aprobación y podría ocasionar el retraso del despacho de aduanas.

Toda mercancía que entre a Brasil, ya sea o no sujeta a impuestos de importación, es inspeccionada por oficiales de aduanas en el puerto de entrada. El registro de la Declaración de Importación (DI) por

parte del importador o su representante legal inicia el proceso de importación. El DI debe contener el nombre y dirección completos del importador y exportador, descripción de bienes con sus números de clasificación, el precio unitario y el valor total del producto, y el origen de los bienes.

Acto seguido, el importador debe presentar los documentos de embarque correspondientes a los oficiales de aduana en el puerto de entrada. Estos documentos incluyen el Conocimiento de Embarque original o Guía Aérea, factura comercial original firmada por el exportador; lista de embalaje, de ser aplicable, y otros documentos, en caso de requerirse. El sistema calcula los impuestos de importación aplicables a la mercancía, al igual que otros impuestos federales aplicables a la importación, y luego carga la cuenta bancaria del importador por la cantidad debida.

Los bienes importados no registrados en SISCOMEX de 45 a 90 días después de su llegada al país son considerados como abandonados. Las autoridades de aduana podrán entonces destruir o disponer de dichas importaciones de acuerdo a la ley.

Los bienes retenidos por 60 días luego de una interrupción en el proceso de importación pueden correr con la misma suerte.

Sin embargo, algunas importaciones están sujetas a una licencia no automática. También podrían requerir de una aprobación de la agencia gubernamental competente que controla la producción

y comercialización de ciertos productos, tales como alimentos y medicinas. El importador debe obtener la(s) licencia(s) de importación antes del embarque de los bienes. No cumplir con estas disposiciones acarrea penalidades. Generalmente, las peticiones de aprobación pueden tardar hasta 60 días y son válidas por 60 días a partir de la fecha de embarque de los bienes a Brasil.

Los bienes con un valor de US$3000 o menos importados a través del servicio postal o empresas de courier, entran bajo el Régimen Simplificado Tributario (RTS).

El departamento de aduanas aplica una tasa tributaria del 60% sobre el precio de la factura además de costos de embarque y seguros. Cuando el valor excede los US$5000, el importador debe registrar una Declaración Simplificada de Importación (DSI).

U.S. authorities implement

new guidelines

for wood packing materials

U.S. authorities have recently implemented new guidelines for the import of all wood packing materials. The statutory requirements of 7 C.F.R. §319.40-3 mandate that regulated wood packing materials (WPM) such as, crates, boxes, and pieces of wood used to support or brace cargo - being imported into the United States shall be heat treated or fumigated with methyl bromide in accordance with EPA label instructions and include a mark that certifies the wood completed the required treatment under the “Guidelines for Regulating Wood Packing Material in International Trade,” ISPM 15 of the International Standards of Phytosanitary Measures (ISPM) and any associated amendments, revisions or exemptions identified by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS).

The regulation (7 C.F.R. §319.40-3) requires that WPM display a visible, legible,

and permanent mark certifying treatment. The mark must be a legible and permanent mark that indicates that the article has been subjected to the approved measure and include the following elements: 1. The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) logo; 2. The ISO two-letter country code for the country that produced the wood packing material followed by a unique number code; 3. The unique number code is assigned by the country’s National Plant Protection Organization (NPPO) to the producer of the wood packaging material, who is responsible for ensuring appropriate wood is used and properly marked. Therefore, this code allows a trace back to the facility that treated and stamped the WPM; and 36

4. An abbreviation that discloses the type of treatment (HT for heat treatment or MB for methyl bromide fumigation; Guatemala is approved to use TT in place of HT or BM in place of MB).

FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH NEW REGULATIONS Regulated WPM must be properly marked to indicate that it has been either heat treated or treated with methyl bromide.

There are three categories under WPM for this enforcement: 1. UNMARKED: WPM that is encountered

by CBP during the course of inspection and found not bearing the required treatment and markings required under 7 C.F.R. §319.40-3(b) (1) and C.F.R. §319.403(b) (2) 2. INAPPROPRIATELY MARKED: WPM that is encountered by CBP during the course of inspection and found to be in-

appropriately marked or illegibly marked is assumed to be untreated by either of the approved methods identified under 7 C.F.R §319.40-3(b)(1); and

El código numérico único es asignado por la Organización Nacional de Protección Fitosanitaria del país al productor del material de embalaje de madera, quien es responsable de asegurar que la madera apropiada sea utilizada y marcada correctamente. El código permite, por ende, rastrear la entidad que trató y selló el material de embalaje.

4. Una abreviatura que encierre el tipo de tratamiento (HT, para tratamiento con calor o MB, para la fumigación con bromuro de metilo. Se ha aprobado que Guatemala utilice TT en lugar de HT, ó BM en lugar de MB).

Se asume que no ha sido tratado de acuerdo a los métodos aprobados bajo las disposiciones del 7 C.F.R §319.40-3(b) (1) 3. INFESTADO: El embalaje de madera (WPM) infestado con una plaga confirma que dicho material no ha sido tratado de acuerdo con las disposiciones del 7 C.F.R §319.40-3(b) (1).Las plagas son insectos de madera de las familias Cerambycidae, Buprestidae, Siricidae, Cossidae, Curculionidae, Platypodidae, Sesiidae, o Scolytidae.

La sección 319.40-3(b) (3) estipula la exportación inmediata de cualquier WPM que no presente la marca requerida. Se considera que los materiales de embalaje de madera marcados que contengan plagas de las familias mencionadas no han sido tratados y marcados según las disposiciones del §319.40-3, y serán exportados inmediatamente de acuerdo con lo estipulado en el §319.40-3(b) (3). culture

Did you know it is possible for all the people of a company, a city or even a nation to behave in a more kind, productive and disciplined manner, while focusing on the same goal and values?

In my book, “Habilidades Gerenciales” (which translates as “Management Skills”) I mentioned how this was possible for Singapore, and how such a culture was able to elevate the country to the developed world.

A few chapters later, while covering the topic of creating high-performance teams, I shared the case of Japan, a country often mentioned in universitylevel business administration courses for rising from the ashes to become the planet’s second economic power which controls 15% of the world’s economy, harbors 10 of the world’s largest banks, and exhibits the highest educational and longevity indexes in the world, in addition to the lowest crime levels on the globe.

And, according to analysts, Japan’s national product equals those of France, the United Kingdom and Germany combined.

What’s interesting is that we are able to trace this success down to the pillars that sustain the Japanese culture, in order to learn how to develop a productive and exceptional, service-oriented culture in our companies. The Japanese, for example, believe in the value of “working together”, a concept that was introduced in their country by Doctor Kaoru Ishikawa in 1960. This value was adopted by the entire nation until it became an example for the world’s top producing companies.

For a country that has no gold or oil, and that does not export fruit, flowers, emeralds, corn or coffee... and with a smaller territory than many Latin American countries, but with a population of one hundred thirty million, it is indispensible to practice a firm, productive culture in order to succeed.

One of my students was recently sent to Japan for a week. The first day of his journey, a Japanese friend took him to his offices in Tokyo. Upon arrival, the Japanese companion parked on the most distant space from the building, despite being the first to arrive.

My student immediately asked the reason for parking so far away, to which the Japanese friend answered that arriving early allowed them to walk to the building, but if a co-worker arrived late for some reason or another, it would be better for such person to find available parking spaces next to the building. This is what I call culture!

I end this article by quoting another positive characteristic of the Japanese culture. People have always praised the intelligence of the Japanese. Just imagine: they are owners of the best-selling brands of cars, computers, calculators... etcetera. The truth, however, is that the Japanese don’t base their success on their intelligence in launching new inventions. Instead, they attribute their success to discipline, the value of time, and on the honor of working. I’ve discovered a very popular saying among them that encloses this concept: “Sooner or later, discipline will overcome intelligence.”

And the best of all is that these and the rest of the principles of Japanese culture are not only mere sayings, but are prac-

este éxito hasta las bases que sostienen su cultura, con el fin de aprender cómo desarrollar una cultura productiva y de servicio excepcional en nuestras empresas. Por ejemplo, los japoneses creen en el valor de “trabajar juntos”, concepto que se empezó a tratar en Japón en el año 1960 con su creador, el Doctor Kaoru Ishikawa. Ése valor se adoptó en la nación entera, hasta ser un ejemplo para las mejores firmas productoras del mundo.

por llagar temprano, ellos podían caminar hasta el edificio; pero si un compañero por alguna razón llegaba retrasado, era mejor que encontrara disponibles los estacionamientos más próximos al edificio… ¡Eso es la cultura!

Para un país que no tiene oro, ni petróleo, ni exportación de frutas ó flores, ni esmeraldas, ni maíz, ni café… y con un territorio más pequeño que muchos de nuestros países latinoamericanos, pero con una población de ciento treinta millones de habitante, es imprescindible una firme cultura productiva para salir adelante.

Termino con este punto citando otra característica positiva de la cultura japonesa, ya que siempre se ha hablado de lo inteligentes que son. Imagine, son dueños de las marcas más vendidas de autos, computadoras, calculadoras… etcétera.

As a consultant and trainer, however, I must explain that achieving a high-performance culture, a mindset geared towards continuous improvement, and client loyalty is not the result of a single seminar. It is, instead, the result of a process that starts with the willingness and commitment of the management, continues with the loyalty of the workforce and is maintained with an exercise that involves nurturing the vision, values, attitude, enthusiasm, investing in our people, and giving attention to the problems that require urgent correction.

With the purpose of preparing a guide on how to develop this culture in your organization, I’ve designed four basic pillars which are mentioned in my book, “Fidelización de Clientes” (“Building Customer Loyalty”). Each pillar is accompanied by real cases which readers can apply in a practical manner.

The first of these is “Strategy Management”.

The second pillar teaches how to manage and synchronize talent with strategy. The third pillar, on the other hand, focuses on process innovation, and the fourth teaches how to use technology for culture alignment.

I would like to use the last lines of this article to briefly talk about the first pillar, strategy

Any sizeable logistics undertaking nowadays requires optimization of all its delivery processes so it is hardly a newsworthy event. When the particular road haulage undertaking concerned announces that the implementation of a routing and scheduling solution will reduce distance covered by a million kilometers, it clearly merits a mention. British company Blakemore Logistics, which forms part of the A.F. Blakemore & Son group of companies, recently decided to extend its use of Paragon transport optimization software from pure fixed route planning use to full dynamic daily route optimization.

The savings achieved by switching are very impressive, as well as the reduction in mileage other benefits include not just the obvious lower overall emissions but mean a 10% reduction in the delivery fleet, now down to 140 trucks servicing the 978 stores across England and Wales. The company is also using Paragon Resource Manager with the unique

As well as the change to daily analysis Blakemore, also opted to include Paragon Fleet Controller enabling it to integrate its Blue Tree Systems R:COM Fleet Management System with its route planning and allow the logistics team to compare actual delivery activities against the optimized plan. This allows the company to alert customers of delivery ETA’s using text messages and communicate with drivers. The system also provides timed reporting with updated ETA’s for customer services and management teams so that they can monitor and manage delivery performance. Logistics Manager, Marc Deakin said: “Our delivery volumes can fluctuate by as much as 30% on a weekly basis. This dy-

namic system enables us to effectively accommodate these changes more efficiently whilst achieving significant benefits.

Al igual que la reducción en kilometraje, otros beneficios del sistema incluyen no sólo emisiones más bajas a nivel general, sino también un 10% de reducción en la flota de entrega Hoy en día, cualquier proyecto logístico de tamaño considerable requiere optimizar todos sus procesos de entrega, con el fin de que dicho proceso sea lo más co tidiano posible. Cuando se anuncia que un proyecto de transporte de carga terrestre implementa una solución de rutas y horarios que reducirá la distancia cubierta en millones de kilómetros, dicho evento es, claramen te, digno de mención. La empresa británica Blakemore Logistics, que forma parte del grupo empresarial A.F. Blakemore & Son, decidió recientemente extender el

uso de su software “Paragon” de optimización de transporte, utilizado en un princi pio exclusivamente para el planeamiento de rutas, a una optimización dinámica y completa para el planeamiento de rutas diarias.

Los ahorros alcanzados por el cambio son muy impresionantes. Al igual que la reducción en kilometraje, otros beneficios incluyen no solo emisiones más bajas a nivel general, sino también un 10% de reducción en la flota de entrega, que ahora se reduce a 140 camiones que atienden a 978 tiendas en Inglaterra y Gales. La compañía también está utilizando el Paragon Resource Manager con el singular módulo Tachomaster Link. El Gerente de Logística de la firma, Marc Deakin, dijo: “Nuestros volúmenes de entrega pueden variar hasta en un 30% semanalmente.

Moving A-Z Seminar a multicultural learning experience As part of its renewed training program, LACMA held the “Moving A-Z” seminar for middle managers in Lima, Peru, November 12-15.

A total of 17 representatives from six Latin American and European countries (Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, and Venezuela) engaged in a series of lectures and workshops prepared to improve the managerial skills required for day-to-day moving operations. The list of topics covered included Surveys, Quotations, Sales, Contract Conditions, Costs (aerial and maritime shipments), Storage, Communication, Responsibility, Insurance, and Origin/Destination Services.

One of the highlights of the seminar was a tour of the Port of El Callao –a 473,080 square-meter facility located 15 km west of Lima, considered one of the largest and most important of South America’s Pacific coast.

This year’s seminar featured a team of three experienced LACMA trainers: Luis Taja (Exprinter Liftvans – Bolivia), Santiago Bosch (Lift-Van International – Argentina), and Evelyn de Jaén, LACMA’s General Manager (Panama).

The seminar was enriched by the motivational skills of coach Pedro Makabe. A certified onthological coach* and a graduate of Chile’s Newfield Network, Makabe is a member of the International Coach Federation (ICF). He also holds a master’s degree in Philosophy and Epistemology, in addition taking post-graduate courses at Japan’s Keio University.

The seminar’s activities concluded with a farewell dinner sponsored by Peruvian companies, Class International, SIM, World Shipping and Express Transports.

Como parte de su renovado programa de entrenamiento, LACMA realizó el seminario “Mudanzas A-Z” para mandos medios en Lima, Perú, del 12 al 15 de noviembre.

APM TERMINALS CALLAO

The multipurpose Port of Callao is the gateway to Peru – the fourth largest economy in South America. The port is located only 15 kilometers from the capital city of Lima, and is the largest port, not only in Peru, but on the entire west coast of South America.

APM Terminals won the public privatization tender for the Muelle Norte Terminal in April 2011 and began operations in the now renamed APM Terminals Callao in July 2011. APM Terminals is the majority shareholder of the terminal with other partners being Callao Port Holdings B.V. and the Peruvian company Central Portuaria.

APM Terminals Callao is a multi-purpose terminal capable of handling both containerized cargo and general cargo such

as metals, grains, fertilizers and chemicals, coal, vegetable and fish oils and machinery, to name a few.

Its modernization project includes 5 construction phases, which will take place within 10 years, representing an investment of over 750 million dollars.

Participantes del Seminario Visitan Instalaciones de Talma Another highlight of the recent seminar in Peru was a visit to the facilities of Talma at Jorge Chávez International Airport.

An aerial services company charged with the management of 12 Peruvian airports, Talma was created over 20 years ago, and handled over 90,000 flights and 166,000 tons of aerial cargo in 2012.

This year has been filled with work for all LACMANext Board members to whom I would like to thank for their level of commitment.

Most of the time spent this year so far has been, to a large degree, devoted to rendering the convention in Costa Rica a pleasant experience for all participants. It will be a spectacular location indeed! This time we have prepared the event entitled, “Feel the Green of Costa Rica”, the purpose of which will be to share and experience the country’s rich fauna and flora. We will start with a horseback riding tour to a set of beautiful waterfalls, where we will be able to swim and refresh ourselves –an event especially organized for the enjoyment of our members.

If the party in Quito was spectacular, the organization and the chosen site in Costa Rica will be even better. This time we will all wear the “tropical attire”, very appropriate for the place and ambiance. So, please! Don’t forget to make space in your suitcase for your tropical outfit. We’ve also prepared a delicious menu which will surely be enjoyed by all.

On another note, we are currently working on a better structure for our donations program. We invite you to inform us about the case of any company worker or their relatives who could be requiring support in the treatment of highly complex and risky diseases. We surely hope no one goes through such situation, but in the case it happens, this is a great option to seek help. If anybody knows of a case of this kind, please contact LACMA to offer a description and the medical costs required by the treatment in order to evaluate the way we can provide assistance.

We are also currently working on a project to implement the concept of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) in our group, something we hope to divulge in Costa Rica. We know beforehand that such an initiative will receive the support of all members.

Si la fiesta en Quito estuvo espectacular, la preparación y el sitio escogido en Costa Rica serán aun superiores. Esta vez luciremos el “tropical attire”, muy acorde al lugar y al ambiente, así que, por favor, no olviden en su maleta guardar un espacio para su traje tropical. Incluiremos un menú suculento para que el tema de la cena sea del gusto de todos.

Por otro lado, estamos trabajando en una mejor estructuración de las ayudas. Les invitamos a poner en conocimiento casos de empleados de sus compañías o familiares de éstos que requieran apoyo en el tratamiento de enfermedades de alto grado de complejidad y riesgo. Ojalá nadie pasara por dichas circunstancias, pero en caso que se dé, esta es una buena opción para buscar ayuda. Si alguien tiene un caso de este tipo, por favor contacte a LACMA para brindar una descripción y los costos médicos del tratamiento a recibir, con el fin de evaluar cómo podemos ayudar.

Así mismo, nos encontramos en el desarrollo de un proyecto de implementación de la RSC (Responsabilidad Social Corporativa), el cual esperamos mostrar a ustedes en Costa Rica, seguros de que contaremos con el apoyo de todos los miembros.

When Malena Larrambebere and Santiago Bosch told me there was a chance for me to enroll in LACMANext’s Exchange Program, I didn’t doubt for one second, as I knew the experience would change my perspective about my job and would help me to grow, both as a person and as a professional.

and would be meeting my colleagues at G-Inter (Brazil), with whom I get the chance to work with very often.

It is needless to say that the emotion I felt within me was indescribable. After all, it would be my first time out of the country,

hotel they had chosen for me. At noon, I received a phone call at my hotel room from Maysa, one of the company’s group leaders, who was all ready to take me out for lunch and to the office afterwards.

After sharing a delicious meal with Maysa, we departed directly to G-Inter’s facilities.

What caught my attention the most was the warmth with which I was welcomed.

From the very first time I met them, I felt

like being around friends I knew my entire life. The entire crew was excellent!

I spent my first day with Maysa’s group, with whom I was able to discuss aspects pertaining to customs in Brazil –definitely an information-rich afternoon.

The commercial department was my station the second day, and was able to learn many new things about this area thanks to Tathyana and Vanesa.

That evening, Maysa and Arthur took me to the very nice Alphaville Mall, where I was able to enjoy a number of typical Brazilian dishes –truly a pleasant experience!

Day three was a visit to the rates department –an experience I enjoyed a lot as it is one of my most common work areas.

Although math is the same around the world, it was very interesting to see how each member of this department plays a different roll, just as they function as a single unit at the same time.

Later that evening, I had dinner with Patrick and Fausto at Outback, a delicious restaurant which, unfortunately, does not

exist in Argentina. I surely enjoyed a night of laughter with both gentlemen, with whom I engaged in a fine conversation about our lives and the rolls we play at the company at the same time.

On the fourth day, I attended a seminar

LACMANext’s Exchange Program has produced countless experiences for many talented young people of our association. This year, the privilege fell upon Gabriela Humeniuk of Lift-Van International (Argentina), who in this issue tells us about her story firsthand. at the German Chamber in Brazil, along with members of G-Inter’s staff. Not only was the seminar interesting, but I was also able to feel part of the company by joining staff members at their stand and by sharing ideas with them.

On day five, I anxiously arrived at the com-

pany to spend some time with the coordination group, an area I am very interested in, since I also work at the same department at Lift Van. G-Inter’s coordination department is very well integrated. They briefed me on how they work and could see them in action! They also showed me how they put each file in order, as well as the steps they take with each client.

When six ‘o clock came around that evening and people started to leave the office, I felt as if I had already started to miss them. Although I was only able to spend five days with them, they had already become a part of my life. I had learned so many things from them and had made great friends.

This has really been an experience I will never forget. I will carry many precious memories of it in my heart and mind. Each and every one of G-Inter’s staff members is a wonderful, kind, respectful and friendly person!

Cuando Malena Larrambebere y Santiago Bosch me comentaron que existía la posibilidad de ingresar al programa de intercambio de LACMANext, no lo dudé ni un segundo. Sabía que la experiencia cambiaría mi perspectiva sobre el trabajo y me ayudaría a crecer, tanto como persona y como profesional.

Está de más decir que la emoción que sentía dentro de mí era indescriptible. Iba a salir de mi país por primera vez e iba a conocer a mis colegas de G-Inter (Brasil), con quienes trabajo muy seguido.

Más del 25% del territorio costarricense está protegido por parques nacionales y reservas.

Los preparativos fueron aumentando junto con la adrenalina y la expectativa y casi sin pensarlo, el día de partir a Brasil llegó.

Al arribar, todo el mundo me trató como si fuera una reina, me estaban esperando en el aeropuerto y me llevaron al excelente hotel que habían elegido para mí. Al mediodía, recibí una llamada al cuarto. Era 60

Maysa, una de las líderes de grupo de la empresa, que ya estaba lista para llevarme a almorzar y luego a la oficina.

Después de compartir una deliciosa comida con Maysa, fuimos directo a las instalaciones de G-Inter.

Lo que más me llamó la atención fue la calidez con la que me recibieron. Desde el momento que los conocí, sentí que estaba con amigos de toda la vida. ¡Todo el equipo es excelente!

El primer día me tocó estar en el equipo de Maysa, con quien pude discutir los aspectos de aduana en Brasil. Fue una tarde muy informativa.

El departamento comercial fue mi estación el segundo día. Con Tathyana y Vanesa pude aprender muchas nuevas cosas sobre esa área.

Muchas han sido las experiencias vividas por los talentosos jóvenes de nuestra asociación en el Programa de Intercambio de LACMANext. Este año, el turno fue de Gabriela Humeniuk, de Lift-Van International (Argentina), quien nos cuenta, en esta ocasión, su historia de primera mano.

A la noche ese mismo día, Maysa y Arthur me llevaron a conocer un mall muy bonito de Alphaville, donde pude degustar algunas comidas típicas del país. Realmente me divertí mucho con ellos.

El día tres estuve con el departamento de tarifas lo cual me gustó mucho porque es una de las áreas en la que yo trabajo. Si bien las matemáticas son las mismas en todo el mundo,

fue muy interesante ver como cada uno desempeña un rol diferente y a la misma vez, funcionan como un mismo departamento.

Esa noche cenamos con Patrick y Fausto en Outback, delicioso restaurante que, lamentablemente, no existe en Argentina, Me reí mucho junto a ellos esa noche, y al mismo tiempo pudimos tener una charla amena sobre nuestras vidas y nuestros roles en la empresa.

El día cuatro asistí con algunos miembros de G-Inter a un seminario de la cámara Alemana en Brasil.

No solo fue muy interesante todo el seminario, sino que pude sentirme como parte del equipo de la empresa estando en el stand con ellos y compartiendo ideas.

Llegué a la empresa ansiosa por compartir mi tiempo con el grupo de coordinación el quinto día. Estaba muy interesada en esa área, porque también desarrollo mi trabajo en ese departamento en Lift Van. Todo el grupo es muy unido, me explicaron cómo trabajan y pude verlos en acción. También me mostraron como 61

ordenan cada file y cuáles son los pasos a seguir con cada cliente.

Cuando llegaron las seis de la tarde y la gente se empezó a retirar de la oficina, comencé a sentir la sensación de que ya los extrañaba. Si bien había estado con ellos sólo cinco días, se habían convertido en parte de mi vida. Había aprendido muchas cosas de ellos y había ganado grandes amigos.

Realmente ésta ha sido una experiencia que jamás olvidaré. Llevo conmigo muchos preciosos recuerdos que quedarán grabados en mi mente y corazón. Todos y cada uno de los miembros de G-Inter son maravillosos, gente con mucho amor, respeto y carisma! ¡Gracias a todos los que hicieron posible este intercambio!

Como en años anteriores, Gerson & Grey ha provisto espacio de almacenaje en donde voluntarios separarán y envolverán ropa y juguetes, que serán entregados a niños de escasos recursos durante las fiestas de Navidad.

High ranking JK Moving Services has just announced it has been indexed as the top-ranked international Transportation Services Provider (TSP) by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA).

The GSA’s Centralized Household Goods Traffic Management Program (CHAMP) ranks carriers using a Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) score. The CSI indicates individual performance against the average level of customer satisfaction across all companies participating in CHAMP. Of the 90 international carriers approved to participate in CHAMP, only 20 earned a CSI score.

As this picture show, he recently enjoyed his favorite pastime at the renowned Piñas Bay resort in Darién, Panama, in the company of friends. The adventure resulted in the bountiful catch of a pair of Black marlins, two Sailfish, a Wahoo, a Yellow-fin tuna, two Albacore tuna, and 12 Bonito.

Tal como lo muestra está imágen, recientemente disfrutó de su pasatiempos favorito en el prestigioso Piñas Bay resort en Darién, Panamá, en compañía de amigos. La aventura resultó en una abundante pesca de un par de marlines negros, dos peces vela, un wahoo, un atún aleta amarilla, dos atunes albacore y doce bonitos.
