En esta nueva edición, queremos oficializar a Panamá como la IPanama n this new issue, we would like to make official the selection of as the host country of our upcoming convention. As all of you may already know, we will celebrate LACMA’s 50th anniversary next year; therefore, isn’t it great to have chosen as host country the location of our headquarters for almost 40 years?

It is for this reason that I take this opportunity to briefly tell you how LACMA decided to start operations in Panama, back in 1979.

Back when our association was established in 1969, all affairs were conducted from the offices of each incumbent president and secretary, so whenever a new Board of Directors was elected, documents were transferred to the new directors and, in a time when the highest level of communications technology was the telex, many were obviously lost. Because of this and due to the growth of the association, year after year (in addition to the increasing level of work), on January 2, 1979, during the presidency of Mr. Felice Snider and with Mr. Charles O’Brien as Permanent Secretary, LACMA was legally incorporated.

Even back in those days, Panama offered important advantages for the selection as headquarters: its geographic position in the center of Latin America, a dollarized economy, an environment where legal entities could be easily created; tax exemptions provisions for non-profit organizations, and an international banking center, to name a few.

Little by little, the country went on, from having a weak economy with no control over the Panama Canal, and with an image reflecting a number of negative Latin American stigmas, to forging its own future, based on clear policies and true national economic planning.

It is important to highlight that the country is currently one of the few in the region whose economy depends on services rather than on commodities, not only thanks to the great engineering marvel the Panama Canal represents, but also due to its great development in tourism.

Por esto, quiero aprovechar estas líneas para contarles un poco de historia sobre cómo LACMA decide, en 1979, iniciar operaciones en Panamá.

Cuando nació nuestra asociación, en 1969, todo se manejaba desde las oficinas de cada presidente y secretario de turno, por lo que cada vez que cambiaban directiva, se pasaban los documentos al siguiente, y obviamente, en una época en donde la mayor tecnología comunicacional era el telex, muchos de ellos se perdían. Por esto, y debido a que la asociación estaba creciendo año tras año y el tiempo de trabajo era cada vez mayor, el 2 de enero de 1979, durante la presidencia del Sr. Felice Snider y bajo la dirección del Secretario Permanente, el Sr. Charles O’Brien, se crea la personería jurídica de LACMA. Ya en esa época, Panamá ofrecía importantes ventajas para ser elegida como sede: su posición geográfica, justo en el centro de Latinoamérica; su economía dolarizada; la facilidad para crear sociedades jurídicas; exención de impuestos para empresas no lucrativas; un sistema bancario internacional, sólo por nombrar algunos.

De ser una nación con una economía débil, sin control sobre el Canal de Panamá, y con una imagen de país que representaba varias de los estigmas negativos de Latinoamérica, pasó, poco a poco, a forjar su propio futuro en base a políticas claras y a una verdadera planificación económica de Estado. Es importante resaltar que, en la actualidad, es uno de los pocos países de nuestra región en donde su economía depende de los servicios y no de los commodities, no sólo gracias a la magnífica obra de ingeniería del canal de Panamá, sino también al gran desarrollo del turismo.

The result is an effervescent Panama with a constantly growing economy, based on a liberal economic model that, since the 1990’s, has fostered an average GDP growth of 6%, which has not experienced a single contraction in almost 30 years. All of this positions the country as one of the most competitive in all Latin America, and the natural choice as the regional headquarters of many multinational companies and, as such, a meeting point of cultures, not only from Latin America, but of the entire world as well, such as its Asian communities, for example.

El resultado: una Panamá efervescente, con una economía en ascenso constante, basada en un modelo económico liberal desde los años 90, que ha permitido un crecimiento del PIB de un 6% promedio, sin haber experimentado ni una sola contracción en casi 30 años. Todo esto lo posiciona como uno de los países más competitivos de toda Latinoamérica, y la elección natural, de varias empresas multinacionales, como sede de sus casas matrices de nuestra región, y por tanto, centro de unión de culturas, no sólo latinas, sino de todo el mundo, con importantes colonias asiáticas, por ejemplo.

There is no doubt that our directors back then surely had vision!

Although our industry was totally different from what it is now, they were able to see the importance of choosing a headquarters based on the tax benefits and the tremendous potential offered by Panama, a country that, undoubtedly, has not been disappointing.

¡Qué visionarios fueron aquellos directores de la época! Si bien nuestra industria era totalmente diferente a la actual, ya veían la importancia de elegir una sede en base a beneficios fiscales, y al tremendo potencial que tenía Panamá, país que, sin lugar a dudas, no decepcionó.

I’ve been travelling to Panama every year for almost a decade now, and it is incredible to see the great cultural and economic effervescence of what has been called the “Dubai of Latin America” by specialized business and tourism magazines.

I hereby invite you to take a few days off to discover this great country, a key element in LACMA’s rich history.

Hace ya casi una década que voy, todos los años, a Panamá, y es increíble ver esa gran efervescencia cultural y económica, que ha logrado ser llamada, por revistas de negocios y turismo especializadas, como “la Dubai de Latinoamérica”.

Los invito entonces, a que reserven los días para conocer este gran país, pieza clave en la rica historia de LACMA.

He conversado con representantes de varias empresas y me comentan lo muy ocupados que están en esta temporada alta. ¡Ojalá así sea para todos!

La Secretaría de LACMA también atraviesa una de las temporadas más altas que haya tenido en muchos años. Nos encontramos trabajando con mucha ilusión y entusiasmo en varios proyectos a la vez, tales como la remodelación de la oficina (¡creo que esto más complicado que una mudanza!), la organización de tres seminarios (Perú/Sept., Panamá/ Oct. y Rep. Dominicana/Nov.) que conllevan a la certificación LACMA Certified Packers (Versión 3.0) de nuestros Miembros Activos; la preparación de Libro de Memorias de los 50 años de LACMA, y la organización de la convención 2019 en Panamá, la cual será, sin duda, un evento muy especial. ¡Celebraremos los 50 años de evolución de nuestra querida asociación!

I have spoken with representatives of a number of companies,

and they comment how busy they are during this high season. May this be so for everybody!

LACMA’s Secretariat is also experiencing one of the highest seasons we’ve ever had in many years. With much illusion and enthusiasm, we are currently working on several projects at once, such as the remodeling of the office (I think this is more complex than moving!), the organization of three seminars (Peru/ Sept., Panama/Oct. and the Dominican Rep./Nov) which entail the LACMA Certified Packers certification (Version 3.0) for our Active Members; the editing of LACMA’s 50th anniversary Book of Memories, and the organization of the 2019 convention in Panama which, undoubtedly, will be a very special event. We will celebrate the 50th year of our dear association’s evolution!

En esta edición, les tenemos una breve cobertura de algunos puntos turísticos de nuestro Panamá… ojalá muchos de ustedes tengan la oportunidad de tomarse unos días, antes o después de la convención, para conocer un poquito de nuestro país.

Deseo felicitar a las empresas del Cono Sur que ya han obtenido la actualizada certificación LACMA Certified Packers, luego de los seminarios realizados en Argentina y Brasil. ¡¡¡Bravo!!!! Éstas constituyen el 21% de los Miembros Activos de LACMA que deben certificarse para el 2019. Los seminarios que realizaremos este año, citados previamente, propiciarán la certificación de un 55% de Miembros Activos más. ¡Vamos logrando la meta!

I would like to congratulate the companies from the Southern Cone that have already obtained the updated LACMA Certified Packers certifications after the seminars that took place in Argentina and Brazil. Hurray!!! These make up 21% of the LACMA Active Members needing to be certified by 2019. The previouslymentioned seminars we’ll hold this year will lead towards the certification of an additional 55% of our Active Members. The goal is being accomplished!

few months ago I had the great privilege of becoming part of a flagship company in the international moving industry of Colombia.

I was appointed Vice-president of Intramar Shipping, a firm with over 70 years’ experience in the market and a solid reputation.

Creating or developing an excellent team is probably one of the toughest challenges a manager has to tackle, not only because it demands a good set of skills to structure it in a way that each member’s potential is harnessed to create synergies and innovation, but also because people bring out the best of them when they feel a sense of purpose in their jobs.

People are the greatest asset of an organization. It is the talent and the passion of its collaborators what determines the quality of the relationships between the company and its customers, suppliers and strategic partners and, therefore, what determines its success in the market. That is why the main duty of a manager is to provide an enriching work environment and nurture the abilities and motivations of each and every team member, but also to know how and when to be firm and demanding for the good of the organization.

In other words, a great deal of being a good manager lies in being able to understand, guide and motivate human beings, in their diversity, to collaborate together to move towards the achievement of common goals, which are aligned with the strategic aims of the company. To accomplish this is no easy task, as it requires not only hard skills that can be acquired by formal education, but also requires social skills and emotional intelligence, which can only be learned through experience and reflection.

As for me, I will continue on this learning path giving the best of me, striving to make a positive contribution in everything I do and positively impacting the life of those with whom I have the opportunity to work. I firmly commit to continue helping Eric Wildhaber (our CEO) to build a family more than a company.

H ace un par de meses, tuve el gran privilegio de hacerme parte de una compañía insignia de mudanzas internacionales en Colombia. Fui elegido vicepresidente de Intramar Shipping, una firma con más de 70 años de experiencia en el mercado con una sólida reputación.

Crear y desarrollar un excelente equipo es, probablemente, uno de los más fuertes retos que un gerente debe asumir, no solo porque requiere de buenas habilidades estructurarlo, en el sentido en que el potencial de cada miembro del equipo esté empoderado para crear sinergias e innovación, sino también porque las personas sacan lo mejor de sí mismas cuando tienen un propósito en su trabajo.

Las personas son el activo más importante de una organización.

El talento y la pasión de sus colaboradores determinan la calidad de las relaciones entre la compañía, sus clientes, sus proveedores y sus socios estratégicos; por tanto, es lo que determina su éxito en el mercado. Es el deber de todo gerente proveer un ambiente de trabajo enriquecedor que nutra las habilidades y motivaciones de todos los miembros del equipo, además de saber cómo y cuándo ser firme y exigente por el bien de la empresa.

Gran parte de ser un buen gerente está en tener la capacidad de entender, guiar y motivar seres humanos, los cuales, en sus diferencias, puedan colaborar juntos en lograr objetivos comunes que estén alineados con los objetivos estratégicos de la compañía. Lograr lo anterior no es una tarea fácil, dado que se requiere, no solo de habilidades técnicas que se puedan adquirir con la base académica formal, sino de habilidades sociales y de inteligencia emocional, que únicamente se pueden aprender a través de la experiencia y la reflexión.

Por mi parte, continuaré en este camino de aprendizaje, dando lo mejor de mí siempre, tratando de hacer una contribución positiva en todo lo que hago, e impactando, de manera afirmativa, la vida de todos aquellos con los que tenga la oportunidad de trabajar. Me comprometo a continuar ayudando a Eric Wildhaber (nuestro gerente general) en la construcción más que de una compañía…de una familia.

The Challenges of Household Goods Claims Adjusting

2. Locations

Ubicaciones

Some areas around the globe face challenges in terms of repair firm quality and availability to inspect or repair goods, cost to replace certain items and/or surveyors’ understanding of the relocation industry. Some of the more challenging areas include Central Asia, Eastern Europe and Central Africa. We are constantly growing and improving our network to better service the most difficult areas worldwide.

Algunas áreas alrededor del mundo presentan retos en lo que respecta a la calidad de las firmas de reparaciones y la disponibilidad de inspeccionar o reparar bienes, los costos de reemplazar ciertos menajes y/o la comprensión que tiene el inspector sobre la industria del relocation. Estamos creciendo constantemente y mejorando nuestra red para servir mejor en las áreas más difíciles del mundo.

3. Repair versus Replace

Not all items can be successfully repaired and not all damages constitute a total loss. It becomes a challenge to explain to the Transferee that his table cannot be repaired but is not a total loss.

Claims Adjusters skills to negotiate are key to successful claims adjusting.

No todos los artículos pueden ser reparados con éxito, y no todos los daños constituyen una pérdida total. Se convierte en un reto explicar al trasladado que su mesa no puede ser reparada, pero que no es una pérdida total. La pericia de negociación de los ajustadores de reclamos es clave para un exitoso ajuste de reclamos.

4. Pre-existing versus

This is an area where people want all damages repaired even if they were not transit related. A key factor is the packing crew’s ability to note any and all pre-existing damages, as the Claims Adjuster relies on the Packing List and any Exception Report to distinguish new from old damages.

Esta es un área en donde las personas desean se reparen todos los daños, aún si no están relacionados al tránsito. Un factor clave es la habilidad del equipo de embaladores para notar cualquier daño preexistente, ya que el ajustador de reclamos depende de la Lista de Embalaje y cualquier Reporte de Excepción para distinguir los daños viejos de los nuevos.

5. Customer Service versus Coverage

While all claims adjusters are focused primarily on the customer service side of every claim, we need to understand that behind the process we have terms and conditions that have to be considered in order to comply with their legal obligation to Underwriters.

Most insurance companies and brokers continue to optimize their services while focusing on the different challenges that the relocation industry is facing worldwide. Critical to their success are: Constantly improving their third party vendors worldwide, working more closely with relocation companies to minimize claims ratios, facing new local insurance compliance requirements and supporting their clients’ expectations in terms of customer service.

We prepare to face all these challenges by working more closely with Underwriters and our clients, training our staff, monitoring our vendors and collaborating with Industry associations to learn more about the future of the relocation industry.

Servicio al cliente versus cobertura Si bien todos los ajustadores de reclamos se enfocan primordialmente en la parte del servicio al cliente de cada reclamo, necesitamos comprender que, detrás del proceso, tenemos términos y condiciones que deben considerarse a fin de cumplir con sus obligaciones legales con los aseguradores.

La mayoría de empresas aseguradoras y corredores continúa optimizando sus servicios, mientras se enfoca en los distintos retos a los que la industria del relocation se enfrenta en todo el mundo. Críticos para su éxito son: mejorar constantemente sus proveedores subcontratados en todo el mundo, trabajar más de cerca con las empresas de relocation para minimizar el porcentaje de reclamos, abordar los nuevos requisitos de cumplimiento de seguros locales y apoyar las expectativas de los clientes en lo que respecta al servicio al cliente.

Nos preparamos para afrontar todos estos retos al trabajar más de cerca con los aseguradores y nuestros clientes, entrenando a nuestro personal, monitoreando a nuestros proveedores y colaborando con las asociaciones de la industria, a fin de conocer más sobre el futuro de la industria del relocation.

Nineteenth-century Spanish painter travels with SIT There is no doubt that the luminism of Spanish painter Joaquín

Sorolla maintains a key spot in Iberian art, just as it raises passions amongst critics and the public, a fact that has been demonstrated by the great response three monographic exhibits on the Valencian artists are prompting, as they are simultaneously shown at Centro Nienmeyer, in the city of Avilés.

The guiding thread of this exceptional event is a tribute to the late Spanish businessman Pedro Masaveu –who passed away 25 years ago—and his passion and special preference for Sorolla, of whom he was his main art collector in Spain, having acquired 59 of his works. A large part of this collection –which mainly comprises marine-related paintings—can be observed in the exhibit entitled, “Pedro Masaveu: Pasión por Sorolla” (“Pedro Masaveu: His Passion for Sorolla”). Two related displays, “Sorolla en su paraíso” and “Notas de Asturias” are also exhibited as a collaboration with the artist’s museum. The first of these is a photographic recollection of the creative and personal universe of the painter, whereas the second contains a selection of slates and small boards –to which Sorolla called ‘color notes’—taken en plein air in the principality.

SIT’s Art section has been in charge of the transport and assembly of this large collection of canvasses and photographs, in addition to the museum graphics, which are calling the public’s attention, and comprise modules of glass and concrete over which the painter’s canvasses hang. This creates a rather volatile look within a spherical space created by Niemeyer, allowing viewers to see all the works at once, as well as in an individual manner.

The exhibits will be open until January 6, 2019.

XIX viaja con SIT Sin duda, el luminismo del pintor español Joaquín Sorolla guarda un espacio clave dentro de la pintura ibérica, al mismo tiempo que levanta pasiones entre la crítica y el público. Tal y como lo ha vuelto a demostrar la gran acogida que están teniendo las tres exposiciones monográficas sobre el artista valenciano que acoge, paralelamente, el Centro Niemeyer de Avilés.

El hilo conductor de este evento excepcional es el homenaje al empresario Pedro Masaveu –fallecido hace 25 años– a través de su pasión y especial predilección por Sorolla, de quien fue su principal coleccionista en España, llegando a adquirir 59 obras. Gran parte de esta colección –compuesta principalmente por marinas– puede contemplarse en la muestra Pedro Masaveu: Pasión por Sorolla. Alrededor de esta exposición se desarrollan Sorolla en su paraíso y Notas de Asturias, ambas realizadas en colaboración con el museo del artista. La primera se trata de un recorrido fotográfico sobre el universo creativo y personal del pintor; mientras que la segunda contiene una selección de tablillas y pequeños cartones –a los que Sorolla denominaba ‘notas de color’– tomadas a plein air en el principado.

En esta ocasión, la sección de Arte de SIT se ha encargado de realizar el transporte y montaje de este numeroso conjunto de lienzos y fotografías. Así como de realizar una especial museografía que está llamando la atención, compuesta por módulos de cristal y cemento sobre los que penden los lienzos del maestro. Dando lugar a una visión volátil dentro del espacio esférico diseñado por Niemeyer; pudiéndose apreciar toda la obra en un solo golpe de vista, al mismo tiempo que individualizadamente.

June, the art department of Grupo Mudanzas Mundiales was in charge of the import, from Mexico to Costa Rica, and the relocation of the sculpture, 'Alas de México" (The Wings of Mexico) to the warehouse of San José’s Municipality.

The Mexican government and the artist Jorge Marín donated “Alas de Mexico”, a famous bronze sculpture which inspires dreams and liberty, to the city of San Jose. On August 1, the Wings were installed at Parque Morazán in downtown San José, which becomes the ninth city in the world to possess this beautiful work of art.

The company thanks the Municipality of San José for trusting in its services, just as it extends its appreciation to Carolina Campos, one of its move coordinators, who was responsible of the import and transport coordination, as well as to the assigned crew, which carried out a professional, high-quality task.

El mes de junio, el departamento

de arte del Grupo Mudanzas Mundiales estuvo a cargo de la importación, desde México a Costa Rica, y del traslado de la escultura Alas de México a las bodegas de la Municipalidad de San José.

El Gobierno de México y el artista Jorge Marín donaron a la Municipalidad josefina las Alas de México, famosa escultura de bronce que inspira sueños y libertad. El pasado 1 de agosto, las alas fueron instaladas en el Parque Morazán, corazón de San José, que se convierte en la novena ciudad en el mundo que cuenta con esta bella obra.

a Universal Mexican in Costa Rica Un mexicano universal en Costa Rica The works of yet another Mexican artist (in this case, those of Rufino Tamayo) were recently transported from Costa Rica to Ecuador –a mission carried out

by Grupo Mudanzas Mundiales.

The exhibit, entitled “Rufino Tamayo.

Mexicano universal”, comprises 63 pieces of modern Mexican art, including engravings and paintings of the Ortiz Gurdián Foundation, sponsored by Banco Promerica. The month-long exhibit was held at Avenida Escazú, in San José.

This time, I would like to talk about the most recent donation made

by LACMAS.O.S. –prompted by the Volcán de Fuego tragedy in Guatemala.

En esta ocasión, deseo platicarles un poco sobre la más reciente donación de LACMAS.O.S. – la tragedia del Volcán de Fuego, Guatemala.

On Sunday, June 3, a huge cloud of ashes covered part of Guatemala City, the consequence of Volcán del Fuego’s second eruption of the year.

El domingo 3 de junio, una enorme nube de cenizas cubrió parte de ciudad de Guatemala, a consecuencia de la segunda erupción en el año del Volcán de Fuego.

The magnitude and fury of the giant (which measures 3,763 high) were great, leaving behind dozens of deaths, the destruction of three villages, and almost 1.8 million people affected. The ashes reached an altitude of 10,000 meters above sea level, generating pyroclastic flows and lethal smoke.

Fue tal la magnitud y furia del coloso (3 mil 763 metros de altura), que dejó decenas de fallecidos, la desaparición de tres aldeas y casi 1.8 millones de personas afectadas. La ceniza alcanzó los 10 mil metros sobre el nivel del mar, lo que generó flujos piroclásticos y humo letal.

It was quite amazing to witness the solidarity that grew in all my fellow Guatemalans, just as it was emotional to see how we worked in unity during one of the worst natural disasters our country has ever experienced.

Fue muy sorprendente ver la solidaridad que nació en todos mis compatriotas guatemaltecos, y realmente emotivo observar cómo nos solidarizamos durante uno de los peores desastres naturales que ha tenido el país.

An in-depth analysis was made with regards to the most appropriate way of providing aid besides food, clothing, and medicine –all of which correspond to the initial phase of the process. It was therefore decided to help an organization known as CENTRARSE (The Center for Action in Corporate Social Responsibility in Guatemala), which presented one of the most complete and structured projects of its kind in the country, and which covers the basic needs for those affected. Their plans propose the construction of health centers and/or schools, drainage and sanitary systems. An alliance was also established with BAC –the Bank of Central America—which will double all donations. In other words, LACMA’s contribution, which amounts to US$10,000, will be doubled to US$20,000.00 in resources. Wonderful news!

Se hizo un análisis pormenorizado de cuál era el mejor medio para brindar ayuda que fuera no solo en forma de comida, ropa, medicinas –asistencias que correspondían a la fase de inicio.

Fue por eso que se decidió apoyar a CENTRARSE, (El Centro para la Acción de la Responsabilidad Social Empresarial en Guatemala), que presentó uno de los proyectos más completos y estructurados de su clase en el país, y que abarca las principales necesidades para los damnificados. Sus planes plantean construir Centros de Salud y/o escuelas o drenajes y sistemas de sanidad. También se hizo una alianza con el BAC –el Banco de América Central— que duplicará todas las donaciones, por lo que la ayuda aportada por LACMA, de US$ 10,000.00, tendrá un total de US$20,000.00 en recursos. ¡Una excelente noticia!

Relocating emotions

My mother always says that those of us

who work in the moving industry live off of emotional attachments. Said attachments may range from a Monet painting or an eighth-century Samurai sword, to a handcarved ebony furniture or a collection of Lladró figurines –as they say, everyone has their own axe to grind.

“To stumble over a block is not a bad thing, but falling in love with the stumbling block, sure is.”

Each move, however, is a learning experience –if you’re able to see beyond what’s obvious, that is—For example, not long ago, we moved a famous athlete, a triathlon expert who rejected a delicious cup of pot-brewed coffee from us (If you visit Mexico, you cannot leave without having one), by argueing that she doesn’t like sugar. Her mid-afternoon snack, however, was a generous portion of Cheetos. What a huge contradiction!

So, while watching her enjoy her Cheetos and display an emotional attachment to her precious collection of little, numerated houses, I asked myself whether she (or may I say, we) also attach ourselves to our own mistakes in an unconscious manner; if each time we fall, instead of getting up, we fall in love with the stumbling block and add it to our personal baggage, carrying the load in a 20’ft, 40ft, 40HC, or even in a 53’ crate, thus creating an attachment to something that weighs the same as the figures depicted by Botero, but without the value thereof.

Transportando sentimientos “Tropezar no es malo, encariñarse con la piedra sí” -Anónimo Mi mamá siempre dice que nosotros,

quienes nos dedicamos al mundo de las mudanzas, vivimos de los apegos de la gente; hay apegos que van desde un Monet o una espada de samurai del siglo VIII, a un mueble de ébano tallado a mano o a una colección de figuritas de Lladró – cada quien sus pecados culposos.

Pero toda mudanza es un aprendizaje –si sabes ver más allá de lo evidente– por ejemplo, hace poco movimos a una famosa deportista experta en triatlones que rechazó un delicioso café de olla (si visitas México no te puedes ir sin probarlo) con el argumento de que no toma azúcar, pero su snack de media tarde fue una generosa porción de cheetos. ¡Una contradicción mordaz!

Así que, mientras la veía saborear sus cheetos y apegarse a su preciada colección de casitas numeradas, me preguntaba si así también inconscientemente, se aferra o nos aferramos todos, a nuestros errores; si cada vez que tropezamos, en lugar de levantarnos, nos encariñamos con la piedra, la añadimos a nuestro embarque personal y vamos con ella por el mundo cargando 20’ft, 40ft, 40HC o ya de plano una caja de 53’, creando así un apego a algo que pesa lo mismo que transmite un Botero, pero sin valerlo.

Violencia nicaragüense amenaza en convertirse en gran crisis económica y migratoria

ince last April, the passing of unpopular reforms in the social security system of Nicaragua (a country which, according to international financial analyst Alberto Padilla, has been a miracle in terms of political stability for the last couple of decades,) has plummeted the Central American nation into one of the worst crises it has witnessed since the bloody civil war that ravaged the country in the 1980’s.

As of this issue (late July) the conflict, which morphed into a nationwide protest demanding the resignation of president Daniel Ortega and to bring the elections process forward, has left over 350 dead and more than 2,000 injured, prompting the condemnation of the international community.

A la fecha (finales de julio) el conflicto, que mutó para convertirse en una protesta nacional que exige la renuncia del presidente Daniel Ortega y el adelanto del proceso de elecciones, ha dejado más de 350 muertos y arriba de 2,000 heridos, propiciando la condena de la comunidad internacional.

In the meantime, the situation is causing major obstacles to the transport of passengers and cargo throughout Central America which, according to experts, could easily prompt yet another regional immigration crisis –issues that ought to be closely monitored by the international removals industry.

“We’ve spent 37 anguishing days away from our families and country,” said José Infante, who was one of the 150 Panamanian truck drivers stranded on Nicaraguan roads due to the crisis, and who were able to return thanks to a collaboration between the Nicaraguan government and the Panamanian consulate in Managua in early July.

“Hemos pasado 37 angustiosos días lejos de nuestras familias y país”, dijo José Infante, quien fue uno de los 150 camioneros panameños varados en las carreteras nicaragüenses debido a la crisis, y quienes lograron regresar gracias a la colaboración entre el gobierno de Nicaragua y el consulado panameño en Managua, a principios de julio.

Yet, 150 truckloads of goods seem like nothing compared to the 6000 that struggled to get though Nicaragua between April and July.

Raul Alfaro, president of the Salvadoran Association of International Freight Carriers, urged countries in the region not to send more cargo vehicles through Nicaragua, as there are at least 70 blockades at key points of traffic throughout the country.

Posible crisis Possible a la immigration crisis migratoria vista in sight The scarcity of food and medical supplies, especially in the wake of the siege of Masaya (which concluded with the upper hand of the government in mid-July), is quickly affecting all segments of the population, including the educated middle classes and the elites.

Esteban Valle, a U.S.-educated attorney who resides in León, told LACMA News magazine during the siege of Masaya, “I’ve been forced to walk several kilometers a day to purchase food for my family.” His fellow countrywoman, journalist Fatima Arellano, also commented, “Many local businessmen are struggling with the lack of sales and others have decided to close operations definitely, pondering whether to leave the country or not.”

La escasez de alimentos y medicamentos, especialmente a consecuencia del sitio de Masaya (que concluyó con la victoria del gobierno a mediados de julio), está rápidamente afectando a todos los segmentos de la población, incluyendo a las clases medias educadas y las élites.

For U.S. politicians, the increasing violence in the Central American nation could rapidly transform into a humanitarian crisis with negative regional repercussions. Marco Rubio, a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the U.S. Senate, recently stated, “The possibility of civil war in Nicaragua is real, a fact that would undermine anti-drug effort in the region and prompt a serious immigration crisis.”

Disastrous economic consequences The current political situation in Nicaragua could cause, according to a recently-published report by the Nicaraguan Foundation for Economic and Social Development, “serious economic problems in the short and medium terms.” The report also warned that “if the problems continue until the end of July, Nicaragua's economy could lose $US404 million and 20,000 jobs. The rate of economic growth could also fall by 3.2 percentage points.”

With a population of 6.1 million residents, Nicaragua is one of the poorest countries of the Western Hemisphere; however, it was able to achieve a measure of economic and political stability with a succession of democratic governments after 1990. In 2007, Daniel Ortega, the Sandinista leader who held the presidency between 1985 and 1990, returned to power and amended the constitution to guarantee successive reelections.

Although increasingly isolated by most international organizations, Ortega continues to be supported by the governments of Venezuela, Cuba, and Bolivia.

How have your company’s activities been affected by the Nicaraguan crisis? ¿De qué manera ha afectado la crisis nicaragüense las actividades de su empresa?

Business transactions with Nicaragua are basically stalled, both in the moving industry as well as in other sectors, a fact that greatly affects the economy of Honduras with daily losses. For Gamundi, it has been somewhat difficult to make clients understand the responsibility we have with regards to their goods and their shipment towards Nicaragua and other countries to the south (Costa Rica and Panama).

El trato con Nicaragua está prácticamente congelado, tanto en las mudanzas, como en los demás sectores, lo que afecta enormemente la economía de Honduras, con pérdidas diarias.

Para Gamundi, ha sido algo complejo hacer entender a los clientes la responsabilidad que tenemos sobre sus menajes y tránsitos hacia Nicaragua y otros países del sur (Costa Rica, Panamá).

Overland transport to these countries is virtually impossible.

Transiting through Nicaragua, if allowed, entails an extremely high risk –one we are responsibly not willing to take. Likewise, Insurance companies are refusing to issue policies to cover said shipments, knowing the high risk this would entail. In the same manner, we are affected by incoming shipments which, at least for the meantime, are stalled by not being able to leave nor pass through Nicaragua, thus diminishing our income in a normally high traffic season in the area.

El envío terrestre a estos otros países es imposible. Cruzar Nicaragua, en caso de que se nos permitiera el ingreso, conlleva un riesgo demasiado alto, uno que no podemos asumir responsablemente. De igual manera, las empresas aseguradoras tampoco quieren emitir pólizas para proteger esos menajes, sabiendo el alto riesgo que existe. Igualmente, nos vemos afectados con los embarques entrantes que, por el momento, están en pausa por no poder salir de Nicaragua o cruzar Nicaragua, disminuyendo nuestros ingresos por trabajos en una época normalmente alta de circulación en el área.

This is not only a problem of our neighboring country, but affects the entire Central American region and continent as well, and destabilizes the economy and confidence, both of which are already frail and prone to cyclical fluctuations.

Adopted measures We are maintaining a constant communication with our clients and give them advice (case by case) with regards to their goods.

Shipments bound for Costa Rica or Panama are being dispatched by sea, a solution that is certainly not the cheapest, but is the safest given the circumstances. There is definitely a sense of discomfort amongst our clients, who think that the increase in costs is being exploited by the parties involved, but in the end they are able to understand that said increases are due to causes beyond our control.

A number of shipments were stored for some time to measure the risk or the situation’s improvement; however, since the crisis did not improve, the decision was made to dispatch a number of shipments by sea, while others remained in storage, such as those bound for Nicaragua.

In the case of not having a plan or expectation that said goods could soon be dispatched, the country’s situation is being closely monitored, in order to dispatch said shipments as soon as possible and with the least possible risk. We believe that constant communication is key for our clients to continue with their plans stress-free, as they did prior to the crisis.

Los embarques que se dirigen a Costa Rica o Panamá se están manejando por vía marítima, solución que, si bien no es más económica, es la más segura dadas las circunstancias. Definitivamente existe un malestar por parte de los clientes al sentir que los costos que suben es algún tipo de aprovechamiento de las partes involucradas, pero al final entienden que son causas ajenas a nuestro control.

Algunos embarques se retuvieron por un tiempo en bodega para medir el riesgo o mejora de la situación, pero al ver que no mejoraba, se tomó la decisión de hacer algunos envíos marítimos, mientras que otros aún permanecen en almacenaje, como los que tienen como destino a Nicaragua.

De no haber un plan o expectativa de que dichos menajes puedan salir pronto, se monitorea la situación del país muy de cerca, a fin de que puedan ser despachados lo más pronto y con el menor riesgo posible. Creemos que la comunicación constante es clave para que nuestros clientes puedan continuar con sus planes sin estrés, como antes de la crisis.

The overland shipment of goods has been affected due to road blockades and the people clashing against police and paramilitary forces, both on highways and on secondary roads.

Adopted measures Shipments bound for Nicaragua are stored in special warehouses, whereas southbound cargo is shipped by sea. The safety of our shipments is a basic priority.

El envío de mudanzas por tierra se ha visto afectado debido a los retenes y a los enfrentamientos entre el pueblo y la policía y los paramilitares, tanto en las carreteras como en los caminos aledaños.

Medidas adoptadas Los embarques hacia Nicaragua son almacenados en bodegas exclusivas, mientras que los que se dirigen al sur se transportan por vía marítima. La seguridad de los embarques es primordial.

CANAL MOVERS & LOGISTICS CORP PANAMA

We have had two delayed overland shipments at the border between Nicaragua and Costa Rica; however, both were able to pass. Both cases were leaving Nicaragua for Panama.

Likewise, we have a materials supplier in El Salvador that used to send its cargo to Panama by land transport, and which now has to do so by sea, in order to avoid passing through Nicaragua.

Adopted measures We haven’t been affected by the crisis as yet. In Central America, we use alternate maritime routes instead of overland transport to avoid passing through Nicaragua.

Hemos tenido dos embarques terrestres con retrasos en la frontera entre Nicaragua y Costa Rica; sin embargo, han podido cruzar.

Estos dos casos se dieron saliendo de Nicaragua con destino Panamá.

También, tenemos un proveedor de materiales en El Salvador que solía enviar su carga vía terrestre hacia Panamá, y ahora los transporta vía marítima para no tener que pasar por Nicaragua.

Medidas adoptadas Hasta el momento, no hemos sido afectados. En Centroamérica, utilizamos vías alternas marítimas en vez de las terrestres para evitar el paso por Nicaragua.

Basically, the crisis has only affected overland shipments bound for the rest of Central America since, due to the situation, passing through Nicaragua has become quite dangerous. We have therefore had to dispatch cargo by sea, although this has increased both transportation costs as well as the shipments’ transit time.

Adopted measures We have given our clients a complete list of reasons why dispatching by sea is more convenient, and have offered them alternative services to provide additional security to the shipments.

Básicamente, solo ha afectado a los embarques que se dirigen por tierra al resto de Centroamérica, ya que por la situación que hay, el tránsito por Nicaragua se ha vuelto muy peligroso. Por ello, hemos tenido que realizar despachos vía marítima, aunque esto ha aumentado el costo del traslado y el tiempo de tránsito de los embarques.

MUDISA – EL SALVADOR

The sociopolitical crisis Nicaragua is currently going through is having a direct impact on business, both at the negotiation level as well as on the rendering of services in specific cases. In recent weeks, we have had 3 related cases, which represent approximately $25,000 for the company. Twelve percent of said amount was lost due to the client’s decision to stop the process, which was related to a new investment in Nicaragua that was cancelled.

Another case included an overland transport bound for Costa Rica as its final destination. The situation prompted us to recalculate the cost of the service, transferring from overland to aerial freight, which directly affected the client. Although the process was completed, it took place with delay, due to the new quotation and approval of the new freight rate.

Lastly, is the case of a Nicaraguan citizen returning to his country, but who has not been able to completely send his goods while waiting for the situation to improve, a fact that could generate additional costs.

Adopted measures As a service-oriented company, we are operating with an increased level of agility to solve the needs of our clients.

La situación político-social que atraviesa Nicaragua en estos momentos está teniendo un impacto directo en los negocios, tanto a nivel de negociación previa como en casos específicos de servicios en proceso. En las últimas semanas, hemos tenido 3 casos relacionados, los cuales representan aproximadamente $25,000.00 en ingresos para la empresa. De estos, el 12% se perdió, dado que el cliente decidió desistir del proceso, ya que estaba relacionado con nueva inversión en Nicaragua, que fue cancelada.

Otro de los casos incorporaba un tránsito terrestre con destino final a Costa Rica. La situación nos obligó a recalcular el costo del servicio, pasando de un flete terrestre a un aéreo, afectando directamente al cliente. Si bien el proceso se completó éste se dio con un retraso debido a la re-cotización y autorización del nuevo precio de flete.

Por último, está el caso de un ciudadano nicaragüense que regresa a su país, pero que no ha podido completar el envío de sus pertenencias, en espera de una mejora de la situación, lo que podría generar costos adicionales.

Medidas adoptadas Como empresa de servicios, estamos actuando con más rapidez para solucionar las necesidades de nuestros clientes.

With regards to logistics, the crisis has not allowed us to send shipments to Costa Rica. There are alternate routes which can be used, but they constitute a risk that cannot be taken lightly. A few days ago, the decision was made to dispatch a shipment to Costa Rica by sea, which is normally done overland.

Stretching approximately 100 kilometers between the provinces of Panamá Oeste and Coclé, the region known as “Las Playas del Pacífico” (the Pacific Beaches) provides an easy escape from the hustle and bustle of Panama City with a broad range of accommodations for all tastes and pockets on the gray sands of the country’s southern coast.

Boca Chica

Una meca del turismo en formación A sleepy fishing village in the westernmost province of Chiriquí is rapidly gaining momentum amongst beach enthusiasts. It is called Boca Chica, one of the gateways to the Gulf of Chiriquí Marine National Park, which covers over 14,000 hectares offering tremendous opportunities for deepwater fishing, snorkeling, kayaking or plain relaxation under the sun.

It is presently served by two boutique hotels: Cala Mía and Boca del Mar. Visitors can either drive to Boca Chica (approx. 7 hours from Panama City) or fly into the city of David, the provincial capital, which is 39 km from Boca Chica.

Coiba

Central America’s largest island

La isla más grande de América Central Locals of the Gen-X age bracket and older were once taught that the island of Coiba, off the Pacific coast of the Veraguas province, is a far-away penal colony where the worst criminals were sent to, often to never return. The truth is that the prison’s existence, which ended years ago, helped preserve most of its natural treasures intact –a place so pristine that it is one of the few places on earth where the scarlet macaw can be found in large numbers.

The island is the center of Coiba Marine National Park, a vast extension coveted by marine enthusiasts from around the world. It is a hot spot for diving, whale watching, and total seclusion, with basic tourist facilities managed by Panama’s Ministry of the Environment.

La isla es el corazón del Parque Nacional Coiba, una vasta extensión codiciada por amantes del mar de todo el mundo. Es un punto de interés para el boceo, el avistamiento de cetáceos y el aislamiento total, con instalaciones básicas administradas por el Ministerio de Ambiente de Panamá.

Un apacible pueblo de pescadores en la provincia occidental de Chiriquí está ganando rápida atención entre los amantes de las playas. Arguably Panama’s top tourist destination, the province of Bocas del Toro offers pristine beaches, lush forests for hiking, islands, indigenous communities, exotic cuisine, and a relaxing culture Caribbean culture that has welcomed countless permanent and temporary residents from Europe and North America in the last 20 years or so.

It is a maritime province where all the action (live music presentations, parties, etc.) takes place by the shore, its attendants being transported back and forth by water taxis of all sizes. Bocas is an hour’s flight from Panama City (departing from either Tocumen or Marcos A. Gelabert airports) or by road –a ten-hour venture across the Continental Divide. Comfortable buses cover the route, departing from Albrook’s National Terminal.

It’s hard to imagine that less than an hour’s drive separates one of Panama’s warmest cities (David) from one of the coolest (Boquete), a charming town which has been promoted as one of the top retirement destinations for North Americans and Europeans.

Boquete is known for its superb coffee (the most expensive variety on the planet, geisha, is harvested there) and beautiful flowers, both of which are honored with their own country fair in January.

Boquete is the largest town of the “Tierras Altas” (highlands) region of the westernmost province of Chiriquí, a great area for mountain climbing (especially on Volcán Barú, the country’s highest mountain), birdwatching, and relaxation, with scores of hotels ranging from modest to luxuriously trendy. One of them, Hotel Panamonte, is a family-owned, century-old institution often chosen by celebrities from around the world.

The city is small, compared to more popular Latin American capitals with which it competes successfully in terms of cuisine options, shopping, and diversity of landscapes.

Its main hot spots are: Casco Viejo, the city’s old quarter, which resembles Old San Juan or Cartagena, harbors the city’s main colonial landmarks and buildings. After sunset, it is a preferred venue for fine dining, top-quality jazz, concerts, and cultural performances.

In 1887, Gustave Eiffel, the creator of the Eiffel Tower, was hired to build the canal’s locks during the ill-fated French attempt. As a matter of fact, one of the lighthouses he built as part of the French project still stands and operates on Isla Grande, in the province of Colón –a true rarity in this part of the world.

On July 30, 2018, four days after the expanded Canal’s second anniversary, the liquefied natural gas tanker, “Maria Energy”, became the 4,000th Neopanamax vessel to transit through the new set of locks.

Although the U.S. financed and managed the Canal’s construction, a multinational task force comprising people from the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, and Asia was charged with the actual construction.

The Canal’s first pilot was captain John Constantine, a native of Greece, who took charge of the USS Ancon during the waterway’s maiden transit on August 15, 1914.

Running parallel to the waterway, the Panama Canal Railway is the resurrection of the world’s first trans-continental railroad, which was formerly known as the Panama Railroad. Built between 2000 and 2001, the new line extends 47.6 miles (76.6 km) between the cities of Panama, on the Pacific, to Colón, on the Caribbean coast.

Built between 1850 and 1855, the original railroad was created by a group of New York businessmen to satisfy the transport demand prompted by the 1849 California Gold Rush. Many heading for California used the isthmus crossing in preference to the long and dangerous wagon route across the vast plains and rugged mountain ranges.

The selection of the Panamanian route was based on the country’s narrowness (the narrowest territory of the Americas, from coast to

As a matter of fact, even prior to the railroad’s opening, U.S. mail was shipped from the eastern seaboard to the isthmus, transported on mule back to Panama City, and loaded on steam vessels that made their way to the Pacific coast of North America.

The Panama Railroad was highly instrumental during the French and American ventures of the Canal, as it was modified to transport the spoils extracted from the excavation sites, in addition to the thousands of laborers hired to work on both projects from around the world.

Serving as the main overland transport mode within the former Canal Zone until the first half of the 20th Century, the railroad started to decline after WWII. The railroad was part of the assets transferred from U.S. to Panamanian hands in 1979, but it wasn’t until the late 1990’s that it was rebuilt in its entirety by its new owners: Kansas City Southern and Mi-Jack Products.

Serving primarily as a container transshipment line between the ports of the Atlantic and the Pacific, also offers a passenger service catering to tourists and businessmen of the Colón Free Zone.

The passenger train includes a wagon with panoramic windows and glass roofs dating from 1928 –renovated at a cost of $ 1 million–, and which provides tourist with the unique sensorial experience of almost floating on the waters of Gatun Lake and skimming the tops of the gigantic trees of the Canal basin.

Latin American air cargo propels DFW growing success Carga aérea latinoamericana impulsa el creciente éxito del aeropuerto de Dallas

or decades, Miami International Airport has been the main port of entry for Latin American air cargo into the United States –an undeniable fact for a number of factors, ranging from a superb geographical position, connections and traffic, to culture and language, especially when referring to customs procedures.

There seems to be evidence, however, that the Floridian city’s hegemony, might be quietly giving way to the steady strengthening of Dallas-Fort Worth International (a.k.a. DFW) in the global cargo scene.

According to John Ackerman, DFW’s Executive Vice President for global strategy and development, Latin American cargo has been steadily entering the U.S. through the north Texas airport thanks to his “total landed cost model,” a statistical analysis of the costs of transporting goods from the perspective of a large variety of products and scores of markets around the world. “I can sit down with a shipper and say, ‘if you choose DFW you can fly your cargo from DFW to Beijing, here’s how much it will cost you and here’s how long it will take,” he explained.

The success of DFW’s “secret weapon”, nevertheless, came as a big surprise, even to Ackerman himself, who thought he had found “something strange” about the airport’s freight numbers prior to a board meeting. “The increase in cargo volumes were

just too high,” he commented. A careful review of the figures, however, confirmed that the airport’s volumes had increased by 21.1 percent year-over-year in August of 2016.

In addition to Latin American cargo, DFW’s success can be attributed to the tremendous growth of e-commerce in recent years, a fact that is best exemplified by the recent construction of warehouse facilities

by Amazon in the airport’s vicinity. Ackerman stated, “E-commerce has revolutionized business to consumer relations, and consumer trends in China have landed DFW at the intersection of some of the fastest growing trade routes on the planet”.

Despite DFW’s positive outlook, Ackerman does not consider Miami a direct competitor for the Latin American cargo market, as both facilities are mutually benefiting from growing north-south trade.

Such a fact, nevertheless, doesn’t stop him from pointing out that some markets are, simply, best served by Dallas which, in 2017, was considered the fourth busiest airport in the world by aircraft movements.

The expanded Panama Canal recently celebrated two years of service to world commerce and, despite an on-going billion-dollar overrun dispute with one of its main contractors, is already reaping financial fruit and establishing major records in terms of traffic volume.

The mega-project, which opened on June 26, 2016, has added new life into many ports of the eastern United States and has attracted new markets and routes to the century-old waterway, such as those pertaining to liquefied natural gas LNG –thanks to a new set of locks that allows the transit of “Neopanamax” vessels (which can carry up to three times the cargo transported by Panamax ships (the largest able to squeeze through the original locks).

Since the conclusion of the expansion project, Canal historians seem to be busy day by day, jotting down the records broken by its huge, new users. Back in May, a new record was established for the highest tonnage handled in a single month, 38.1 million CP/SUAB tons (Universal Measurement System of the Panama Canal), transported by 1,231 transiting vessels.

Commenting on the occasion, Jorge Quijano, administrator of the Panama Canal, stated, “This new historic milestone reiterates the positive effect of the expanded Canal, and is an additional proof of the continuous trust of the maritime industry on the Panama Canal, and the impact it will have in the future of maritime world commerce.”

In a recent interview, nevertheless, Quijano explained that the reason for the expanded waterway’s success is not necessarily in the size of its locks. He said, “Records happen, and we are not necessarily looking for records.

However, we are very much focused on having good relations with our customers and providing them with a good product. In practice this means providing a passage through the Panama Canal at a price that represents a good choice for owners and having safe transits and reliability, which is our number one priority.”

According to the British International Freight Association, the number of surcharges and fees continues to grow, often with no real explanation or justification.

T

he recent levying of ‘emergency’ fuel surcharges has prompted the British International Freight Association (BIFA) to rise its voice against what it considers “unjustified additional costs”, imposed by major container shipping companies.

Although the aforementioned increase is attributed to an unstoppable reality of day-to-day economics, Robert Keen, Director General of the BIFA, stated that “Forwarders do not like shipping line surcharges of whatever nature and we have been challenging their legitimacy on behalf of our members, and their customers, for many years.”

Keen further justifies BIFA’s position by explaining that in the past, the organization has witnessed a wide range of opaque increases, such as those attributed to equipment imbalance, peak season, and currency fluctuations, in addition to fuel surcharges. “The number of surcharges and fees continues to grow, often with no real explanation or justification. For instance, what does an extra ‘administration fee’ or ‘container sealing fee’ cover that is not in the standard service offered?” he questioned.

BIFA’s Director General also complained about surcharges imposed for variables way beyond their control (strikes, bad weather, etc.) and which ultimately need to be passed on to the customers, despite engaging in all preventive measures. “There is sometimes an unfair perception that our members are to blame.

If a shipper enters a contract to buy goods they should know exactly what they are paying and that price should not change,” he explained.

For shipping lines, however, the trickling-down of costs is the result of market movements that simply cannot be avoided. Klaus Lysal, Vice President of iContainers, said, “The exasperation felt by shippers is completely understandable and natural. But despite the backlash, I reckon some shippers would prefer to pay a little more overall and have fewer surprises come into their supply chains such as changes to rates and services.”

Si bien el citado incremento es atribuido a una realidad imparable de la economía diaria, Robert Keen, Director General de BIFA, detalló que “a los remitentes no les gusta los recargos de ninguna naturaleza, y hemos estado objetando su legitimidad a nombre de nuestros miembros y sus clientes por muchos años”.

Keen justificó aún más la posición de BIFA explicando que, en el pasado, la organización ha presenciado una amplia gama de incrementos opacos, tales como los atribuidos al desequilibrio de equipos, temporada alta y fluctuaciones de moneda, además de los recargos por combustible. “El número de recargos continúa creciendo, a menudo sin una real explicación o justificación. Por ejemplo, ¿qué cubre un ‘cargo administrativo’ o un ‘cargo por sellado de contenedores’ que no se encuentra en el servicio estándar ofrecido?”, cuestionó.

El Director General de BIFA también se quejó de los recargos impuestos por variables más allá de su control (huelgas, mal tiempo, etc.) y que en última instancia deben ser trasladados al consumidor, a pesar de todas las medidas preventivas. “Existe, a veces, la injusta percepción de que nuestros miembros son los culpables. Si un remitente firma un contrato para la compra de bienes, debe saber lo que exactamente está pagando y el precio no debería cambiar”, explicó.

That is according to independent research firm Trippel Survey & Research, LLC©’s 24th Annual Nationwide Relocating Employee Survey©, released this month.

In February, Arpin Van Lines was ranked first in supplier satisfaction by a separate Trippel survey.

Golf for charity The Arpin Charitable Fund recently announced that its Fifth Annual Arpin Strong Golf Tournament, held at the New England Country Club in Bellingham, Massachusetts, has successfully raised $27,479 for charity. The Arpin Charitable Fund, also known as Arpin Strong, was formed to help those in need during natural disasters and other unfortunate circumstances. These golf tournaments have collectively raised about $130,000 for charity over the past five years.

Certified Relocation Professionals Two Arpin Group employees have passed the Worldwide ERC Certified Relocation Professional examination: Jean Gong, Director of Business Development, West Coast, and Allison Rathbun Dickson, Assistant Vicepresident, Business Development. Both will now be recognized as Certified Relocation Professionals.

The CRP exam is offered annually via an internet-based testing format at test centers throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. Approximately 70 percent of this year's 169 candidates earned a passing score of 500 or higher.
