The upcoming convention promises to be very lively and full of camaraderie. Our 13 Mexican members will welcome us into a warm, tropical beach environment – perfect for the enjoyment of a couple of beers together. As in previous years, our LACMANext enthusiasts will build homes for TECHO in Guadalajara a few days prior to the convention. This will be the 4th consecutive year LACMANext collaborates with this worthy cause, which is very gratifying indeed. important topic in this issue. Many of our companies are known to help their communities with social welfare initiatives, and some firms do so in an anonymous manner. LACMA also contributes to such initiatives by helping TECHO in various countries, whereas we, at Canal Movers & Logistics, contribute to Operation Smile Panama. I hereby motivate you to a lend a helping hand to those who need it the most as well. Your community and your associates will appreciate it.

Nosotros, en Canal Movers & Logistics, apoyamos a Operación Sonrisa Panamá. Les exhorto a que contribuyan con los más necesitados. Su comunidad y The International Monetary Fund forecasts colaboradores se lo agradecerán. an economic growth of 1.5% for our region in 2017, whereas the World Bank calculates an economic increase of 1.8% for the economy of Latin American and the Caribbean.

Such growth will be higher than what was forecasted for 2016, which was barely 0.4%.

There is still a lot of uncertainty with regards to the economic policies of the new Trump administration and its impact in the region, where Mexico, due to its geographical proximity, will be the most affected.

Este año 2017, el Fondo Monetario Internacional proyecta un incremento económico de 1.5% para nuestra región, mientras que el Banco Mundial estima un alza en la economía de Latinoamérica y el Caribe de 1.8%. Este incremento es superior al proyectado en 2016, de apenas 0.4%. Aún hay mucha incertidumbre con las políticas económicas de la nueva Administración del Presidente Trump y su impacto en la región. El pasado diciembre LACMA experimentó el retiro de su colaboradora con mayor antigüedad. Gykza Martínez se jubiló de la Secretaría de LACMA luego de 35 años de excelente servicio profesional.

Gykza manejó muchos de los programas de nuestra asociación como los reclamos, inscripción de convención, becas, rewards, comunicaciones con los miembros, nuevas solicitudes de ingreso, etc.- La echaremos de menos y le deseamos todo lo mejor en esta nueva etapa de su vida.

FROM OUR PRESIDENT | DE NUESTRO PRESIDENTE

As an added value for our active members, LACMA has entered into an agreement with the Sealand shipping company –a member of the Maersk Group—through a preferential contract for all our members offering reduced rates, additional time during delays, and credit opportunities for the payment of freight charges. You will soon learn more about this topic.

During 2015, LACMA invested in various projects, such as the development of a new web page, LACMA Contact, a technological platform for virtual seminars, and offered two on-site seminars in the Dominican Republic. Due to these investments and their related expenses, the seminars and the high costs of the convention in Punta del Este, Uruguay, the financial statements for that year reflected a $80,000 deficit.

Nevertheless, during 2016 we experienced a surplus of $114,500, generated by the good results of the Bogota convention and the on-site seminars held in Mexico, which experienced high levels of participation by our members. Thanks for your support!

This year, we will continue to invest in our seminars, such as the new virtual induction seminar, and our association’s renewed on-site flagship seminar, LACMA Packers. You will receive more information about these training initiatives at our Puerto Vallarta convention.

Next year, our convention in Rio de Janeiro will be more costly in financial terms, as it is an extremely popular destination, this being compensated by the back-to-back convention with FIDI. Ours will be held first.

I am pleased to see a stronger LACMA, thanks to the guidance of my Board of Directors and to the work of the Secretariat’s staff under Evelyn’s leadership.

It has been a pleasure to serve you as president of this wonderful association during the last two years. I will remain on the Board as Immediate Past President for two additional years – making my tenure a total of 12 years. It has been an enriching experience to have shared with so many former presidents of LACMA. I hereby thank Felice Snider, who invited me to join his Board of Directors, my fellow Board members, and the entire LACMA secretariat, especially Evelyn, Gykza, Monica, and Glendy.

Como valor agregado para nuestros miembros activos, LACMA ha logrado un acuerdo con la naviera Sealand, del grupo Maersk, mediante un contrato preferencial para todos nuestros miembros con tarifas reducidas, más tiempo en días de demora y la posibilidad de crédito para el pago de fletes. Escucharán más sobre este tema próximamente.

Durante el 2015, LACMA invirtió en proyectos especiales como el desarrollo de una nueva página web, LACMA Contact, plataforma tecnológica para seminarios virtuales y ofreció dos seminarios presenciales en la República Dominicana. Debido a estas inversiones y a los gastos relacionados a las mismas, los seminarios y el alto costo de la convención en Punta del Este, Uruguay, los estados financieros para ese año reflejaron un déficit de $80,000.

No obstante, durante el 2016, tuvimos un superávit de $114,500 generado por los buenos resultados de la convención en Bogotá y a los dos seminarios presenciales realizados en México, los cuales contaron con una amplia participación de nuestros miembros. ¡Gracias por su apoyo!

Este año, seguiremos invirtiendo en seminarios, como el nuevo seminario virtual para inducción y el renovado seminario presencial insignia de nuestra asociación, LACMA Packers. En convención, en Puerto Vallarta, recibirán mayor información sobre estas iniciativas educativas.

El próximo año, tendremos una convención más costosa en Río de Janeiro, ya que el destino es muy concurrido, pero tenemos el aliciente que la convención se hará “back to back” con FIDI. La nuestra será primero.

Me siento complacido de contar con una LACMA más fortalecida gracias a la dirección de mi Junta Directiva y al resultado de los colaboradores de la Secretaría bajo el liderazgo de Evelyn.

Ha sido un placer servirles estos últimos dos años como presidente de está magnifica asociación. Permaneceré en la Junta Directiva por dos años más como expresidente inmediato. En total, serán doce años. Ha sido una experiencia enriquecedora haber compartido con tantos expresidentes de LACMA. Agradezco a Felice Snider, quien me invitó a formar parte de su Junta Directiva, a mis compañeros de Junta y a todo el personal de la Secretaría de LACMA, especialmente a Evelyn, Gykza, Mónica y Glendy.

s para nuestra asociación un honor dedicar la portada de esta edición a Gykza Román de Martínez, quien colaboró con nuestra asociación por 35 años y quien el mes de diciembre pasado se acogió a la jubilación.

O

ur Association is honored to dedicate the cover of this edition to Gykza Román de Martínez, who worked with our Association for 35 years and who retired last December.

Gykza worked more than half of her life for LACMA… she mentioned that at the tender age of 21, she was interviewed for the position in LACMA by Greg Cain of Cain Brothers, active/founding member at the time. She began working in LACMA under the presidency of Johnny Cortez; since then, she has worked under the presidency of 18 Presidents and 4 General managers of LACMA. During this period of her life she lived many personal experiences… she married, had children and saw them graduating from high school and then from the university... and similarly, she also experienced the growth of our beloved LACMA. Some of you have seen her grow alongside our association... until a few months ago, she was a constant in the path of LACMA. Her professional career in LACMA leaves a large footprint given her personal values and the performance of her work.

This edition includes an article entitled "Personal Values... A Great Professional", inspired by the values that we have always seen reflected in Gykza and which deserve to be highlighted.

Gykza always stood out for being very responsible and very committed to her work… performing it with great integrity. With confidence in herself, she kept a positive attitude towards changes and diversities, adapting and motivating herself in order to efficiently fulfill her duties.

Cheerful and positive, she always maintained a good relationship with her fellow colleagues, and up to last minute of her day in LACMA, she focused on sharing her knowledge with her coworkers so that things continued to run normally in the office after her retirement.

Among the virtues that most stood out during her path through LACMA, I believe, were her COMMITMENT and unconditional LOYALTY to the Association that saw her grow and which she learned to love 35 years ago; LACMA has been fortunate to have had this collaborator of great personal values.

On behalf of this Association, and most specially myself, I would like to acknowledge her outstanding performance and extend her a well deserved recognition; we thank Gykza for so many years of dedication, effort and passion; her path through LACMA has left an imprint in those that worked with her and in this association which was fortunate to have her collaboration.

We are sure that she will begin this new stage of her life with excitement, and that she will live this new acquired independence with much joy and passion! THANK YOU, Gykza!

Gykza laboró más de la mitad de su vida en LACMA… a la tierna edad de 21 años, nos cuenta, fue entrevistada para laborar en LACMA por Greg Cain de la empresa Cain Brothers, miembro activo/fundador de esa época. Inició su labor en LACMA bajo la presidencia de Johnny Cortez; desde entonces, laboró bajo la presidencia de 18 Presidentes y 4 Gerentes Generales de LACMA. Durante ese período de su vida vivió experiencias personales…se casó, tuvo sus hijos y los vió graduarse de bachillerato y luego de la universidad…y de igual manera, también vivió gran parte del crecimiento de nuestra querida LACMA. Algunos de ustedes, la han visto crecer a la par de nuestra asociación… hasta hace unos meses, una constante en el camino de LACMA. Su trayectoria en LACMA deja una gran huella, dadas las virtudes de su persona y el desempeño de sus labores.

En esta edición incluí un artículo titulado "Valores Personales… un Gran Profesional" inspirado en los valores que siempre vimos reflejados en Gykza y que merecen ser destadados.

Gykza siempre se destacó por ser muy responsable, muy comprometida con su trabajo… desempeñándolo con mucha integridad. Con mucha confianza en sí misma, mantuvo una actitud positiva ante los cambios y diversidades, adaptándose y auto motivándose para cumplir con sus deberes eficientemente.

Jovial y positiva, mantuvo siempre una buena relación con sus colegas y, hasta el lúltimo minuto de su trayectoria en LACMA, se esmeró por compartir sus conocimientos con sus compañeras a fin de que las cosas continuaran desarrollándose normalmente en la oficina después de su retiro.

Considero que entre las virtudes que más la destacaron en su camino por LACMA, están su COMPROMISO e incondicional LEALTAD a la asociación que la vió crecer a y a la que ella aprendió a querer hace 35 años atrás. LACMA ha sido afortunada de haber contado con esta colaboradora de grandes valores personales.

Solo me queda, en nombre de esta asociación y muy especialmente en el mío propio, hacerle un merecido reconocimiento y agradecerle a Gykza por tantos años de dedicación, esfuerzo y cariño. Su paso por LACMA ha dejado huellas en los que compartimos con ella y en esta asociación que se vió favorecida con su aporte.

Confiamos en que iniciará esta nueva etapa de la vida con ilusión, y que vivirá esta nueva independencia con mucha alegría y pasión! ¡GRACIAS Gykza!

The recent Seminar for Packing Instructors, which took place in Mexico City late last year, has started to yield the results expected by the association, as its participants have been successfully training the personnel of their respective companies, in order for the latter to become LACMA Certified Packers.

El reciente Seminario de Coaching para Instructores de Embaladores, que tuvo lugar en Ciudad de México a finales del año pasado, está dando los frutos esperados por la asociación, ya que sus participantes han estado entrenando con éxito al personal de sus respectivas empresas, a fin de que los últimos obtengan la certificación LACMA Certified Packers.

“I have no time...”

Perhaps you’ve heard this statement a million times throughout your entire life. The phrase is usually uttered when someone has no focus or interest in something.

It is perhaps one of the best and most common excuses humans are known to give.

Real lack of time indeed does happen, but this is most likely not the case whenever most of us claim not to have it.

Lack of time often happens because people usually spend it on things that are not important.

At work, time management is necessary to prevent low productivity.

The problem lies in not using the time properly. People waste their time in unnecessary chats at the office, in social networking on the internet, by postponing simple tasks, and by engaging in personal business during working hours, etc.

Engaging ourselves in useless things or following a rather lazy approach to life are the greatest burglars of time. How can we avoid such situations?

First, you need to make a simple list of tasks, after which you may calculate the time you need to accomplish all of them. After that check, if you can, allocate said tasks throughout the day. If a day is not enough, reorder your list by priority.

Remember: we are all given 24 hours to live in a day. What makes the difference between having enough time or not depends on the way we manage it.

“No tengo tiempo…”

Quizás usted haya escuchado esta afirmación un millón de veces durante toda su vida. La frase es, normalmente, expresada cuando alguien no se concentra o no demuestra interés en algo. Es, probablemente, una de las mejores y más comunes excusas que brindamos los seres humanos.

La verdadera falta de tiempo es algo que ocurre de hecho, pero este generalmente no es el caso cuando decimos no tenerlo.

La falta de tiempo ocurre a menudo porque las personas lo gastan en cosas que no son importantes.

En el trabajo, la gestión del tiempo es necesaria para evitar una baja productividad. El problema radica en no usar el tiempo adecuadamente. La gente gasta su tiempo en conversaciones innecesarias en la oficina, en las redes sociales de internet; por posponer tareas sencillas, y por resolver asuntos personales durante horas laborales, etc.

Nuestra participación en actividades no productivas o seguir un estilo de vida de pereza son los ladrones más grandes de tiempo. ¿Cómo podemos evitar estas situaciones?

Primero, necesita hacer una lista sencilla de tareas, para luego calcular cuánto tiempo necesita para cumplir con todas ellas.

Después de la revisión, si puede, distribuya dichas tareas durante el transcurso del día. Si una jornada no es suficiente, reordene su lista por prioridades.

Recuerde: todos tenemos 24 horas para vivir en un día. Lo que hace la diferencia entre tener suficiente tiempo o no, depende de la manera en que la administramos.

Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC) in the city of Lima.

APEC is a regional economic forum establish in 1989 to take advantage of the growing interdependence of the AsiaPacific region. Its 21 members seek to generate greater prosperity for the region’s inhabitants by promoting a balanced, inclusive, sustainable, innovative, and safe growth, thus accelerating regional economic integration.

The 21 representatives of the member countries met in Lima in order to discuss a variety of topics, the main theme being “Quality Growth and Human Development.”

The ocassion called for the arrival of major world leaders, such as Barack Obama, Vladimir Putin, and Xi Jinping, among others.

mes de noviembre 2016 fue muy importante para el Perú, ya que se llevó a cabo el Foro de Cooperación Económica Asia-Pacífico (APEC) en la ciudad de Lima.

APEC es un foro económico regional, establecido en 1989 para aprovechar la creciente interdependencia de la región Asia-Pacífico. Sus 21 miembros buscan generar una mayor prosperidad para los habitantes de la región promoviendo un crecimiento balanceado, inclusivo, sostenible, innovador y seguro, y acelerando la integración económica regional.

Los 21 representantes de los países miembros se reunieron en Lima a fin de conversar sobre una variedad de temas, siendo el central el “Crecimiento De Calidad Y Desarrollo Humano”. Para esta reunión, Perú recibió a importantes líderes mundiales como Barack Obama, Vladimir Putin y Xi Jinping, entre otros.

Preparations for such a major event started weeks in advance, with Express Transports being part of the organization.

The company’s duties started with the customs clearance management, transport, and delivery of 300 bicycles, 18 cars, 26 vans, and 5 buses donated by the government of China to its Peruvian counterpart. Likewise, Express Transports’ team cleared and delivered the luggage of Canada’s delegation, as well as ABC News’ technical equipment, which was used to provide coverage of the event with direct links to the White House.

Although the forum concluded on Saturday, November 19, Express Transports’ greatest mission had yet to begin. The Ministry of Foreign Relations, one of the firm’s most representative clients, requested the packing, transport, and storage of all items used during the activity. This represented 4 days of work which required the participation of 25 Express employees to transport 1100 CBM comprising chairs, tables, and spare parts. Days one and two were dedicated to packing all items, whereas the third day was devoted to loading. The load’s transport to the warehouses took place on the fourth and last day.

The APEC Forum represented a great challenge for Express Transports, as it had to deal with all the events’ logistics aspects in addition to engaging in its regular move duties; however, its personnel was able to prove that with a great desire to work, a good organization, an excellent work team, and lots of effort, all things can be achieved!

Los preparativos para el magno evento comenzaron con semanas de anticipación, siendo Express Transports parte de la organización.

El trabajo de la empresa empezó realizando la gestión de desaduanaje, transporte y entrega de 300 bicicletas, 18 carros, 26 vanes y 5 buses que el gobierno chino donó al gobierno peruano. Asimismo, el equipo de Express Transports desaduanó y entregó el equipaje de la delegación de Canadá y los equipos de grabación de ABC News que cubrió el evento con enlaces directos a la Casa Blanca.

El foro culminó el sábado 19 de noviembre; sin embargo, la misión más importante para Express Transports recién comenzaba. El Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores, uno de los clientes más representativos de la firma, solicitó empacar, trasladar y almacenar todo lo utilizado para dicha actividad. Fueron 4 días de trabajo que requirieron de la participación de 25 empleados de Express, a fin de transportar 1100 CBM entre sillas, mesas y repuestos. Los días uno y dos fueron dedicados a embalar todos los ítems, mientras que el tercer día estuvo dedicado a la carga. Durante la cuarta y última jornada se realizaron los trabajos de traslado a los almacenes.

El Foro de APEC fue un gran reto para Express Transports, ya que aparte del trabajo regular de mudanzas, la empresa estuvo a cargo de todos los aspectos logísticos del evento. No obstante, su equipo comprobó que con muchas ganas de trabajar, buena organización, un excelente grupo humano de trabajo y mucho esfuerzo, ¡todo se puede lograr!

Katsman, a young Canadian dental hygienist, was vacationing in the Dominican Republic where she discovered a need for dental care and education for low-income children and youth. Once back in Canada, Elina would use her heart to share her vision, make connections and gather everything she would need to begin her dream of starting a charity to help provide dental care which was so desperately needed. Smiles Foundation was born.

When Elina started Smiles Foundation she had no idea that it would ever be more than one clinic, but through her dedication to providing care and her commitment to the community, she exceeded even her own expectations.

Present day, Smiles Foundation has 10 permanent clinics in Herrera, Los Ríos, Villa Mella, Pantoja, Santo Domingo, Moca, Santiago, Puerto Plata, La Vega, El Ceibo and Higuey in the Dominican Republic. Smiles Foundation also has 5 mobile clinics which visit various remote areas of the island. Smiles Foundation offers free primary dental care, preventative health education and restorative dental treatments for children. Adults receive treatment at a discounted rate. Smiles also provides computer training for youth, job and volunteer opportunities for locals. To date, Smiles Foundation has helped over 4.26 million people through treatment, education and care.

E s sorprendente lo que la gente puede hacer cuando de verdad les importa una causa, al igual que a las personas que son afectadas

por dicha causa. Hace casi 30 años, Elina Katsman, una joven higienista dental oriunda de Canadá, pasaba unas vacaciones en República Dominicana, en donde descubrió la necesidad de cuidados y educación dental entre los niños y jóvenes de escasos recursos. De vuelta en Canadá, Elina utilizaría su corazón para compartir su visión, hacer conexiones y recopilar todo lo que necesitaría para iniciar su sueño de establecer una fundación benéfica, a fin de brindar la salud bucal que tanto se necesitaba.

Fue así que surgió Smiles Foundation (Fundación Sonrisas).

Cuando Elina inició Smiles Foundation, no tenía idea que sería más que una clínica, pero su dedicación por proveer servicios de salud y su compromiso con la comunidad, sobrepasaron sus propias expectativas.

En la actualidad, Smiles Foundation posee 10 clínicas permanentes en Herrera, Los Ríos, Villa Mella, Pantoja, Santo Domingo, Moca, Santiago, Puerto Plata, La Vega, El Ceibo y Higuey, en República Dominicana. La fundación cuenta también con 5 clínicas móviles que visitan diversas áreas remotas de la isla. Smiles Foundation ofrece, de manera gratuita, servicios de salud dental primaria, educación en salud preventiva, y tratamientos de restauración dental para niños. Los adultos reciben tratamiento a precio reducido. Además, Smiles brinda entrenamiento en computación para jóvenes, empleos y oportunidades de voluntariado para los locales. Today, when I asked Elina about the early days of Smiles Foundation, she tells me about receiving her first shipments in the Dominican Republic 30 years ago. She recalls waiting with a truck for her container to clear customs, and then driving it out by herself to be sorted, distributed and installed at her various mobile clinics.

Just last month, I joined Elina as she supervised yet another of her shipments loading at Tippet-Richardson International/Tippets World, one of Smiles Foundations long time partners. This Canadian global relocations firm offers much needed expertise to international shipments making it easier for donations to reach their destination and those in need. Tippet-Richardson International/Tippets World has provided preparation and the transportation of household goods overseas, along with special requirements for corporations and charities since 1927.

This shipment contained over 15 dental chairs, tables, chairs, desks, cabinets, fridges, filing cabinets, latex gloves, two panoramic x- ray machines as well as 2 intra- oral x-ray machines, all headed for the Dominican Republic. These goods were generated through Smiles Foundation's partnerships with Canadian and American dental companies, as well as private dentists. The Willowdale Rotary Club, another partner of Smiles Foundation, is currently working on raising funds for new mobile clinics, as some of the existing mobile clinics are quite old and difficult to maintain.

When asked what Smiles Foundation means to her, Elina says “Smiles Foundation is my life, my first child, my passion, it’s part of who I am”.

Recuerda que esperaba con un camión hasta que su contenedor fuese despachado en aduanas, para luego conducir el vehículo ella misma a fin de que la carga fuese organizada, distribuida e instalada en sus varias clínicas móviles.

El mes pasado, estuve junto a Elina mientras supervisaba la carga de uno más de sus embarques en Tippet-Richardson International/Tippets World, uno de los viejos socios de Smiles Foundation. Esta firma canadiense de mudanzas internacionales ofrece su tan necesaria experiencia en el caso de los embarques internacionales, haciendo que las donaciones lleguen de manera más fácil a su destino y a los que las necesitan. Tippet-Richardson International/Tippets World ha proporcionado servicios de preparación y transporte de menajes al extranjero, al igual que a corporaciones y fundaciones de caridad, con requisitos especiales, desde 1927.

El cargamento contenía más de 15 sillones dentales, mesas, sillas, pupitres, armarios, refrigeradoras, archivadores, guantes de látex y máquinas de rayos x, al igual que 2 máquinas intra-orales de rayos x, todo esto, con destino a la República Dominicana. Estos recursos fueron generados a través de las sociedades de Smiles Foundation con empresas dentales de Canadá y Estados Unidos, al igual que de dentistas privados. El Club Rotario Willowdale, otro socio de Smiles Foundation, actualmente trabaja en la recolección de fondos para nuevas clínicas médicas, ya que algunas de las actuales ya están obsoletas y difíciles de mantener.

Cuando se le preguntó qué significaba Smiles Foundation para ella, Elina dijo, “Smiles Foundation es mi vida, mi primer hijo, mi pasión. Es parte de quien soy”.

After his surprising victory in last November’s election, we were witnesses of how the results affected the Mexican economy and how its currency has decreased in value. Now the main concern of the Mexicans is whether they will fall into a recession.

In Europe, the alarm started after the June 2016 Referendum, when the UK voted to leave the EU by a slight margin (52%-48%). According to Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, the withdrawal agreement must be signed within two years of the notification; however, there has not been a formal letter issued to the EU leaders as of yet, as the British Government does not consider it was necessary.

The story of Clover Internacional started in Venezuela when, in 1946, Luis Alfredo Rincón founded Corporación Rincón, a customs services firm providing support to companies exhibiting export needs. Rincón left Corporación Rincón in 1964 and went on to establish Clover Internacional, which started operations as a pioneer in national and international moving services, gaining ample recognition in the industry, in addition to achieving exponential growth.

La historia de Clover Internacional inició en Venezuela, cuando Luis Alfredo Rincón, en 1946, decidió fundar Corporación Rincón, firma de servicios aduanales que apoyaba a empresas con necesidades de exportación. Para 1964, el Sr. Rincón se separa de Corporación Rincón y funda Clover Internacional, iniciando operaciones como una compañía pionera en servicios de mudanzas nacionales e internacionales, ganando amplio reconocimiento en la industria y un crecimiento exponencial.

Shortly after, Rincón, along with other businessmen, established LACMA, an association dedicated to safeguarding the interests and rights of moving companies in Latin America. In 1970, Clover expanded its range of action by incorporating multimodal transport and international cargo consolidation services.

The company later opened offices in Miami, Florida (Clover Systems LLC) which, in addition to moving services, offers international cargo operations. Simultaneously, in Venezuela, the firm entered the world of physical warehousing and document digitalization through the Clover File C.A. brand. Additionally, operations were started in Houston Texas (Clover Internacional LLC), to offer regular and oversized cargo services related to the oil industry.

Later on, in Venezuela, the firm added the transport of “zero mileage” vehicles to its list of services (Autotrans C.A.) and, since 2010, has evolved to offer overland transport services.

Poco después, junto con otros empresarios, Rincón decide fundar la Asociación LACMA, dedicada a salvaguardar los intereses y derechos de las empresas dedicadas a las mudanzas en Latinoamérica. Durante 1970, Clover expande su campo de acción, incorporando servicios de transporte multimodal y consolidación de carga internacional de mercancías.

Posteriormente, se abren las puertas de sus oficinas en Miami, Florida (Clover Systems LLC) que, además de servicios de mudanza, brinda servicios de carga internacional.

Paralelamente, en Venezuela, se incursiona en el mundo del almacenaje físico y digitalización de documentos, mediante la marca Clover File C.A. y, por si fuera poco, se inician operaciones en la oficina de Houston, Texas (Clover Internacional LLC), para brindar servicios de carga y sobredimensionados dedicados a la industria petrolera.

Más tarde, en Venezuela, se suman las operaciones de transporte de vehículos “0 Km” (Autotrans C.A.) y desde 2010 evolucionaron, prestando servicios de transporte terrestre.

Until recently, I had developed my professional career in Medellín,

the “City of Eternal Spring.” I am a psychologist with a post-graduate degree in Management, and I arrived in my country’s capital, Bogotá, D.C., a few months ago. In addition to the theories I had learned during my formative years as a professional, one of the most significant things I brought with me were the excellent lessons of my last work experience (in the Sandwich Qbano franchise) where I learned, in a tangible manner, that the greatest success for an organization is to be motivated by the strongest force of all: love

Mi carrera profesional la había desarrollado, hasta hace poco, en la “Ciudad de la Eterna Primavera”, Medellín. Soy psicóloga con postgrado en Alta Gerencia, y hace algunos meses, llegué a la capital de mi país, Bogotá D.C. En mi equipaje, lo más significativo que traje, además de las teorías que había aprendido en mi formación profesional, fueron las excelentes lecciones de mi última experiencia laboral (la franquicia Sandwich Qbano), en donde aprendí, de manera tangible, que el mayor éxito para una organización es estar motivada por la fuerza más potente de todas: el amor.

A great part of the success of all companies depends on it's employees. Whenever someone is hired, it is assumed that the hired party meets a large percentage of the multiple skills that are expected from all employees, regardless of the position said person may occupy in the company.

work contract doesn’t necessarily imply that the organization will count on its employees’ best efforts.

All companies wish that their newly-hired employee will be an excellent one; however, the question is, what qualities should an employee have to achieve such a desired level of excellency?

In addition to the pertaining key knowledge or skills the position requires, companies are in search of employees possessing personal values, personality traits and features that lead to success. Good personal values are those which constitute the basis of a good employee.

Our business leaders need to stop their approach of trickle-down influence, whereby traditional media coverage is the conduit through which their work will be condensed and eventually be consumed by the public.

mixture of factors, including the proliferation of social media, the effects of last decade’s international crisis, widespread political corruption, and the rise of unexperienced populist leaders have fostered the creation of a new term, declared “Word of the Year” in 2016 by Oxford Dictionary. And yes, that term is “post-truth.”

The word, which gained momentum after the surprising election of Donald Trump as president of the United States last November, can well be defined as “relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief.”

Although the term is most generally applied to the recent political phenomena that took place in Great Britain and the United States, many international analysts in the global south suggest that post-truth can also explain the South American “pink tide” of the early 2,000s, and most recently, the surprising victory of the “Nay” option of last year’s referendum in Colombia, which was design to legitimize the peace accords between the government and the 52-year-old FARC guerrilla movement.

In an article published by political analyst Tom Hashemi, a general malaise amongst the desinfranshised masses targeted at the political and financial elites, is one of the main factors behind the phenomenon. How does the “post-truth” phenomenon affect the business world?

Does it affect the international moving industry?

Despite its current connotation, the term’s definition is not exclusively political, a fact that is being demonstrated in places like South Korea and Latin America. It was public outcry that toppled governments in Guatemala and Brazil –the same force that has achieved swift actions against a scheme of corrupt businessmen and politicians in the “Lava Jato” scandal, the tentacles of which have extended to at least nine Latin American countries.

Although the international moving business has generally remained unaffected from major scandals in recent decades, no one in the industry can deny that many unethical companies have given rise to unfair competition, especially with the advent of the Internet and social media –a phenomenon that could well be considered a form of public manipulation to the detriment of our well-established and regulated industry.

How can international movers tackle the effects of unfair competition in this post-truth reality?

The following are a couple of web-based strategies by Tom Hashemi, which could well be applied in our field as we do business in this post-truth world: Start Thinking about Everyday People as End-Users of Your Work.

It is time to master the art of storytelling as we market our companies. Our business leaders need to stop their approach of trickle-down influence, whereby traditional media coverage is the conduit through which their work will be condensed and eventually be consumed by the public.

Embrace the Web, Even the Weird Parts, and Take Social Seriously Managers need to push their digital strategies to move beyond simply running institutional Twitter or other social media accounts. Twitter and Facebook are fantastic for showcasing your experts and engaging in substantive conversations with fellow wonks, but business leaders should look to use the “weirder” parts of the web too, such as Reddit or Tumblr.

Expressed in Tom Hashemi’s own words, outreach, branding, and taking risks online can be scary propositions for our organizations who, let’s face it, can be a bit buttoned up; however, if we reallocated some of our catering budgets, along with our brain power, to digital strategy we may have a shot at putting facts our companies were built on back on the menu.

Si bien es cierto que el término es aplicado, por lo general, a los recientes fenómenos políticos que se dieron en Gran Bretaña y Estados Unidos, muchos analistas políticos del “sur global” sugieren que la post-verdad también puede explicar “la marea rosa” sudamericana de principios de los años 2000, y más recientemente, la sorpresiva victoria del “No” en el referéndum del año pasado en Colombia, que fue diseñado para legitimar el

acuerdo de paz entre el gobierno y las FARC, movimiento guerrillero de 52 años de existencia.

En un artículo publicado por el analista político Tom Hashemi, un malestar general entre las masas marginadas dirigido hacia las élites políticas y financieras, es uno de los factores principales de este fenómeno.

How much did tradition weigh in How do you see yourself in 10 years? your decision to join the family Or perhaps 20? business?

Having Hilldrup International been in business since 1903, I’d say there’s a fair bit of history and tradition wrapped up in the business. While I grew up hearing about the company and coming to the office with my dad, I was never pressured into working here. I worked here in various departments for a few summers in high school and one in college but then I actually worked outside of the industry for several summers and for three years after graduating college.

I moved to New York City and worked in digital advertising for a media company, developing digital strategy for the Capital One Bank account.

After a few years, I felt I had “stretched my wings” enough and was ready to come back and try working at Hilldrup. Tradition definitely played a part in that decision as I wanted to be a part of this great company that my great-grandfather, grandfather and father helped build.

As a child, did you want to be when you grew up?

I was always changing my mind as to what I would be when I grew up – doctor, teacher, flight attendant, CEO at Hilldrup, writer or journalist. I’d say my longest held belief was in being a teacher – I have always loved working with and helping kids. I definitely didn’t know what working in marketing or in digital/social media meant but here is where I’ve ended up!

What personal and professional strengths do you bring into the company?

I think one of my biggest strengths is the fact that I worked outside of the industry for several years. I wasn’t wrapped up in the moving and relocation trends and lingo from day 1 and so I bring a different perspective when we have conversations about broader strategy or consumer needs. I also worked (and continue to work in) marketing so I am not as involved in the day to day logstics/ operational side of the business (at least not yet!). When I came here, my dad said that Hilldrup was not a marketing company, and I would argue that we as a marketing department have changed that over the past few years. Marketing is a vitally important part of any sales or customer service team, and we’ve worked to reduce barriers and silos and really open up communication. I would say my being a millennial is a strength in itself because I think and act differently than a lot of people here so I can bring that perspective to conversations.

Time moves fast, and I know 10 years will be here before I know it! Personally, I hope to be in the Fredericksburg, VA area with a family and kids, being heavily involved with them and our community. Professionally, I hope to still be at Hilldrup. In what capacity, I’m not sure, but I hope Hilldrup will have continued to grow and prosper with the changing times.

I really enjoy working in the digital space so I hope my position is one where I stay on the cutting edge of technology and work to incorporate that into our processes for Hilldrup overall (whatever that technology looks like in 2027 – I can’t even imagine!).

Unfair competition has become one of the main threats to the industry in recent years. As a young professional in the moving industry, what alternatives do you propose in this situation?

I believe all competition is fair game, and the competition is actually paramount for our success as we work to create better solutions than our many competitors. To assume a competitor is "unfair" doesn’t set us up for a positive mindset when working with customers to create solutions to their relocation issues; rather we must always ensure we have a mutually beneficial and "winning" value proposition for our customers.

We have hard assets and a superior network of partner agents throughout the world that are hard to duplicate for any competitor, especially those companies that provide the technology but no actual relocation assets. I also believe it’s important that we develop technology ourselves that exceeds customers’ expectations and that can be applied to our age-old “formula.” This will mitigate the threat of our industry becoming commoditized. It is necessary to adapt and to market this evolution to customers to show our true value as a one-stop shop for moving, storage and relocation for any range of customer needs.

How does a decades-old company like Hilldrup remain current as the 21st century progresses?

The world is changing at a pace faster than ever before, so it’s more important than ever to stay on top of trends in order to best suit customers and meet and exceed their expectations. Hilldrup encourages collaboration as well as difference of opinion – that’s the only way to have a productive conversation and figure out the best solution.

My brother, other employees and I provide first-hand feedback as to what millennials and

others expect in the form of communication, social media, customer service, etc. These opinions are highly valued.

Hilldrup encourages its employees to attend conferences, webinars and trainings of all kind to stay on top of these trends, and we also work with outside vendors whose sole purpose is to keep us up-to-date on these trends, provide recommendations and best practices on technology and innovation.

Our long history of success also allows us to invest in whatever innovations are necessary to serve our clients as efficiently and effectively as possible. Staying current is a team effort as we want to stay true to our guiding principles that have served us well since 1903 while evolving them to fit today’s needs.

What is your greatest goal and dream?

My greatest goal is to volunteer in some meaningful way in our community. I haven’t yet found that organization that is the perfect fit for me, but I’m looking into ways to help at local schools or places where kids need someone to hang out with and gain a positive role model. I’ve said I’ve wanted to do that for several years now, but I think 2017 is my year. Another big goal of mine is to finish a marathon with my mom – we always walk and run together so we said we’re going to find a fairly “easy” marathon to train for and run in the next year.

My dream is to travel to all of the continents by the time I’m 30. I have 4 years and still need to check off Australia, Africa and Antartica (though I’m okay leaving this last one off for now…I much prefer the warmth!). Beyond that, there are many places throughout the world that I hope to travel to with family and friends over the coming years.

Your favorite pet?

My favorite pet was my black Lab dog, Wahoo. My brother named him after the college my parents went to (and where he and I subsequently attended) – the University of Virginia (UVA).

Your favorite spot in the whole world is?

I’ve traveled my fair share around the world and around the United States, but my favorite spots are fairly close by. I’d say the first spot is my parent’s house in Fredericksburg, VA. We have a house on land overlooking a river that runs through the city, and it is just perfectly quaint and relaxing there. My second favorite spot is Nantucket, a tiny island off of the coast of Massachusetts, and it is truly my happy place.

Hilldrup International - USA ¿Cuánto pesó la tradición en tu decisión de unirte al negocio familiar?

Habiendo estado Hilldrup International en operaciones desde 1903, podría decir que hay bastante historia y tradición en la empresa. Mientras crecía escuchando sobre la empresa y visitando la oficina con mi papá, nunca se me presionó para trabajar aquí. Trabajé en varios departamentos durante unos cuantos veranos en la secundaria y durante un verano en la universidad, pero luego laboré fuera de la industria durante varios veranos y por tres años luego de graduarme de la universidad.

Me mudé a Nueva York y trabajé en publicidad digial para una firma de medios, desarrollando estrategias digitales para la cuenta de Capital One Bank. Después de algunos años, sentí que había “abierto mis alas” lo suficiente y que estaba lista para regresar e intentar trabajar en Hilldrup.

La tradición, en definitiva, jugó una parte en esa decisión, ya que deseaba ser parte de esta gran empresa que mi bisabuelo, abuelo y padre ayudaron a construir.

Como niña, ¿qué desabas ser cuando fueras grande?

Siempre cambiaba de opinión en cuanto a lo que deseaba ser cuando creciese – doctora, maestra, sobrecargo, CEO de Hilldrup, escritora o periodista. Creo que la creencia que duró más tiempo fue la de ser maestra –siempre me ha gustado trabajar con niños. Ciertamente no sabía lo que significaría trabajar en marketing o con redes sociales/digitales, pero ¡es ahí a donde he parado! ¿Qué fortalezas personales y profesionales aportas a la compañía?

Creo que una de mis más grandes fortalezas es el hecho de haber trabajado fuera de la industria por varios años. No estuve involucrada en las tendencias sobre mudanzas y el relocation, ni familiarizada con la jerga desde el día 1, por lo que traigo una perspectiva distinta cuando entablo conversaciones sobre estrategias

más amplias o sobre las necesidades del cliente. También he trabajado (y continúo trabajando) en marketing, por lo que no estoy involucrada en el lado logístico/ operativo del día a día (¡al menos, todavía no!). Cuando me incorporé a la empresa, mi papá dijo que Hilldrup no era una firma de marketing. Creo que nosotros, como departamento de marketing, hemos cambiado eso durante los últimos años. El marketing es una parte vital de cualquier equipo de ventas o servicio al cliente, y he trabajado para reducir barreras y silos, y para realmente abrir las comunicaciones.

Creo que ser una millennial es una fortaleza en sí misma, porque pienso y actúo distinto de mucha gente aquí, por lo que puedo traer esa perspectiva a mis conversaciones. ¿Cómo te ves en 10 años? ¿o quizás en 20?

Los tiempos vuelan, y ¡sé que esos 10 años estarán aquí antes de que nos demos cuenta! Personalmente, espero estar en el área de Fredericksburg, Virginia con una famila e hijos, estando altamente involucrada con ellos y con nuestra

comunidad. A nivel profesional, espero estar todavía en Hilldrup. ¿En qué capacidad? No estoy segura, pero espero que Hilldrup haya continuado creciendo y prosperando con el pasar del tiempo.

Disfruto trabajando en el ámbito digital, por lo que espero que mi posición me ayude a permanecer a la vanguardia de la tecnología y a trabajar para incorporarla en nuestros procesos generales en Hilldrup (sea lo que implique la tecnología en 2027 --¡No me lo puedo imaginar!)

La competencia desleal ha sido una de las principales amenazas a la industria en años recientes. Como una joven profesional en la industria de las mudanzas, ¿qué alternativas propones ante esta situación?

Creo que toda competencia es juego limpio, y que la competencia es fundamental para nuestro éxito, ya que trabajamos para crear mejores soluciones que las que ofrecen nuestros múltiples competidores.

Afirmar que un competidor es “desleal” no nos brinda una mentalidad positiva al trabajar con clientes para crear soluciones a sus problemas de relocation; en su lugar, debemos siempre asegurar que tengamos una propuesta de valor beneficiosa y de ganancias para nuestros clientes.

Contamos con bienes tangibles y una red superior de agentes-socios en todo el mundo, los cuales son difíciles de duplicar por parte de cualquier competidor, especialmente aquellas empresas que brindan tecnología, pero ninguna estructura de mudanzas tangible. También creo que es importante que desarrollemos tecnología nosotros mismos que exceda la expectativa de nuestros clientes, y esta pueda ser aplicada a nuestra “fórmula ancestral”. Esto mitigará cualquier amenaza de que se generalice nuestra indusria. Es necesario adaptar y promover esta evolución a los clientes a fin de mostrar nuestro verdadero valor como una agencia única de mudanzas, almacenaje y relocation para cualquier variedad de necesidad de nuestros clientes. ¿Cómo se mantiene actualizada una empresa centenaria como Hilldrup mientras avanza el siglo XXI?

El mundo está cambiando más rápido que nunca antes, por lo que es más importante que nunca estar a la cabeza de las tendencias, a fin de complacer a nuestros clientes y exceder sus expectativas.

Hilldrup promueve la colaboración, al igual que las diferencias de opinión –esa es la única manera de tener una conversación productiva y buscar la mejor solución. Mi hermano, otros empleados y yo brindamos retroalimentación de primera mano sobre lo que los millennials y otros esperan de esta forma de comunicación, las redes sociales, el servicio al cliente, etc. Estas opiniones son altamente valoradas.

¿Tu rincón favorito en todo el mundo?

Nuestra larga historia de éxito también nos permite invertir en cualquier innovación que sea necesaria para servir a nuestros clientes de la manera más efectiva y eficiente posible. Mantenernos actualizados es un esfuerzo de equipo, ya que deseamos ser fieles a los principios básicos que nos han mantenido firmes desde 1903, a la vez que los transformamos para llenar las necesidades de hoy.

¿Mascota favorita?

Mi mascota favorita fue un labrador negro llamado Wahoo. Mi hermano lo bautizó con el nombre de la universidad a la que asistieron mis padres (y a donde mi hermano y yo posteriormente asitimos) –la Universidad de Virginia (UVA).

He viajado bastante alrededor del mundo y de los Estados Unidos, pero mis rincones favoritos se encuentran cerca de mi.

Diría que el primer rincón es la casa de mis padres en Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Tenemos una casa en una propiedad que domina un río que atraviesa la ciudad, y el sitio es perfectamente pintoresco y relajante. Mi segundo lugar favorito es Nantucket, una pequeña isla cercana a la costa de Massachusetts, y es verdaderamente mi lugar feliz.

¿Cuál es tu mayor meta y sueño?

Mi mayor meta es ser voluntaria en nuestra comunidad de una manera significativa.

Aún no he encontrado la organización que compagine conmigo perfectamente, pero estoy buscando maneras de ayudar a escuelas locales o a lugares donde los niños necesiten alguien con quien estar y ganar un modelo de vida positivo. He dicho que he deseado hacer eso durante ya varios años, pero creo que 2017 será mi año. Otra de mis grandes metas es terminar una maratón con mi mamá – siempre caminamos y corremos juntas, por lo que decimos que vamos a encontrar una maratón bastante “facil” para la que entrenaremos y participaremos el próximo año.

In your opinion, what are the three main challenges of the moving industry in Latin America? Briefly state your ideas on how to solve them.

In my experience in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, I’ve noticed that the challenges of the industry in Latin America are: 1. Customs 2. Communication 3. Automobile shipments.

A.Each country establishes its own rules regarding the handling of imports and the documentation needed for the clearance process. It is the responsibility of the destination agents to provide said documents and pertaining information, to reduce the risk of customs problems.

B.Communication between companies is key for providing a high-quality service.

With good communication, it is possible to plan the entire moving process prior to the shipment’s arrival, keeping the client satisfied and happy at the same time. Said communication can take place via email, as it allows us to obtain answers and information in an expedite manner.

C.With all the customs changes that frequently take place in our region, it is important to keep current on the requirements for the import of automobiles into Latin American countries.

It is possible for a shipping company, for example, to declare a vehicle as risky, thus increasing our destination expenses up to 500%. Prior to any shipment, it is necessary 56

to confirm details with the destination agents, to avoid such situations.

Tell us about your professional training.

What plans do you have with regards to your educational future?

I stared my professional training while still being in diapers literally speaking, visiting the offices of La Rosa del Monte as a newborn baby. During summer vacations once I started school, I always accompanied my father to check out the company’s trucks and visit the warehouses, to learn the details of the trade.

At age 15, I started working as a mover during summer vacations, packing and preparing inventories in New York. I got my commercial license at 18, and started to earn a little money with my own moving team. A few years later, at age 21, I got my license as a heavy-equipment driver, and started to transport containers to the docks and engage in inter-state moving.

I relocated to Puerto Rico at age 23 to provide support in the creation of a heavyequipment transport department, where I gained experience in sales and general knowledge pertaining to the activity, just as I got involved in sales in the Dominican Republic.

After leaving the heavy-equipment department (which was already generating over 2 million dollars annually) at age 28, I focused on military and international moves

area, where I continue to learn about the amusing world of moving, and on the various types of clients and agents that have accompanied us for so many years. Between my 31st birthday until now, I have dedicated myself to sharing my knowledge with our staff members in Miami, Orlando, and New York, which generate large volumes of international moves.

My education plans are to continue learning from our agents in every country we do business in, tuning my knowledge in logistics and international moving.

You are currently 35 years old, the age limit between the youngest members of Generation X, and the oldest of the Millennial Generation. In your opinion, what group do you consider yourself a part of, and why?

I consider myself a part of the Millennial Generation, as I am a strong-willed and determined person. I am not afraid of hard work, whether physical or dirty. I understand that my generation does not survive very long without technology, but it is also true that we are currently taking over all industries.

Where do you find peace?

In my boat in the open seas, or at any little island or beach in Puerto Rico.

Our region continues being victimized by political corruption. What advice do you give future generations to avoid said pattern?

I do not follow politics very often, but I know that corruption can be seen and felt throughout Latin America. The only thing I can say is that we get to keep our heads up when we work for our own money in an honest way. Those who like easy and fast money end up meeting their fate sooner or later, and end up being sorry for their earlier decisions.

What strengths do you bring to LACMANext?

I bring many things to LACMANext, such as my youth, in-depth knowledge on logistics, and experience in machinery relocation. I also bring a good attitude for teamwork, and I enjoy participating in all types of events.

Favorite pastimes?

Playing American football, sailing in my boat, traveling to the countryside with my family, and enjoying my 8-month-old baby girl as much as possible.

Your favorite place in the world? Why? Culebra, Puerto Rico, an island located 30 minutes by plane from the main island, and an hour away by boat. It is one of 5 small, uninhabited islands with very beautiful beaches, which are my hideaway from work and the only place where I turn my phone off and forget about the world.

¿Cuáles, en tu opinión, son los tres principales retos del mundo de las mudanzas en Latinoamérica? Bríndanos brevemente tus ideas sobre cómo resolverlos.

En mi experiencia en Puerto Rico y República Dominicana, he visto que los retos de la industria en Latinoamérica son 1. Aduanas 2. La comunicación 3. Los embarques de automóviles.

A. Cada país establece sus propias reglas en cuanto al manejo de sus importaciones y a la documentación necesaria para el proceso de liberación.

Es la responsabilidad de los agentes de destino proveer todos estos documentos e información pertinente, a fin de reducir el riesgo de problemas aduaneros.

B. La comunicación entre empresas es clave para un servicio de alta calidad. Con buena comunicación, es posible planificar todo el proceso de mudanza antes de la llegada del embarque, manteniendo al cliente informado y satisfecho a la vez.

Esta comunicación puede ser por email, ya que nos permite tener respuestas e información de manera expedita.

C. Con todos los cambios aduaneros que se dan con frecuencia en nuestra región, es importante mantenerse informado sobre los requisitos para la importación de automóviles en los países latinoamericanos. Es posible que la línea marítima, por ejemplo, declare un auto como riesgoso e incremente nuestros gastos de destino en un 500%. Antes de cualquier envío, es preciso confirmar detalles con los agentes de destino a fin de que situaciones como éstas no ocurran. ¿Cuál ha sido tu formación profesional? ¿Qué planes tienes en cuanto a tu futuro educativo?

Mi formación profesional empezó cuando aún estaba literalmente en pañales, visitando las oficinas de La Rosa Del Monte con solo meses de nacido. En el colegio, durante mis vacaciones de verano, siempre estuve al lado de mi padre, pasando revista a los camiones y visitando los almacenes, a fin de conocer los pormenores del negocio.

A los 15 años, empecé a trabajar como mudancero durante mis vacaciones, empacando y haciendo inventarios en Nueva York. A los 18 años obtuve mi licencia comercial, y empecé a ganar algo de dinero con mi propio equipo de mudanzas. Unos años más tarde, al cumplir 21, obtuve mi licencia de conductor de equipo pesado y empecé a transportar vagones a los muelles y a realizar mudanzas interestatales. A los 23 años me mudé a Puerto Rico para apoyar la creación de un departamento de transporte de maquinaria pesada, en donde adquirí experiencia en ventas y conocimientos generales sobre esta actividad, a la vez que me desenvolvía, de igual manera, en el área de ventas en República Dominicana.

Habiendo dejado el departamento de maquinaria pesada (generado más de $2 millones de dólares anuales) a mis 28 años, me enfoqué en el área de mudanzas militares e internacionales, en donde sigo aprendiendo sobre lo divertido que son las mudanzas, y sobre los distintos tipos de clientes y agentes que nos han acompañado durante tantos años. A partir de mis 31 años hasta el momento, me he dedicado a impartir mis conocimientos a los colaboradores de nuestras oficinas en Miami, Orlando y Nueva York, en donde se generan muchas mudanzas internacionales.

Tienes actualmente 35 años, la edad límite entre los miembros más jóvenes de la Generación X y los mayores de la Generación Millennial. ¿A cuál de ellas perteneces, en tu opinión y por qué?

Me considero de la Generación Millennial, ya que soy una persona de voluntad fuerte y determinación. No le temo al trabajo duro, ya sea físico o sucio. Entiendo que mi generación no sobrevive mucho sin la tecnología, pero también es cierto que ahora dominamos todas las industrias. ¿Un rincón en donde encuentras paz?

En mi bote en mar abierto, o en cualquier islita o playa en Puerto Rico.

Nuestra región sigue siendo víctima de la corrupción política. ¿Qué consejos darías a las futuras generaciones para que no sigan el mismo patrón?

No sigo mucho la política, pero lo de la corrupción se ve y se siente en toda Latinoamérica. Lo único que puedo decir es que cuando trabajamos por nuestro propio dinero de manera honesta, andamos con la cabeza en alto. A la gente que gusta del dinero fácil y rápido le llega su día tarde o temprano, y luego lamentan sus decisiones anteriores. ¿Qué fortalezas traes a LACMANext?

Yo traigo muchas cosas a LACMANext, como juventud, conocimientos profundos sobre logística, y experiencia en movimientos de planta y de maquinarias.

Traigo una buena actitud para el trabajo en equipo, y me gusta participar en todo tipo de eventos. ¿Pasatiempos favoritos?

Jugar fútbol americano, navegar en mi yate, salir al campo a pasear con mi familia, y disfrutar todo el tiempo posible junto a mi nena de 8 meses. ¿Lugar favorito en el mundo? ¿Por qué?

Culebra, Puerto Rico, una isla situada a 30 minutos de la isla mayor en avión, y a 1 hora por vía marítima. Es una de 5 pequeñas islas deshabitadas que poseen playas muy hermosas. El lugar es mi escape del trabajo y el único sitio en el que apago el teléfono para olvidarme del mundo.

iviane Lopez form G-INTER TRANSPORTES LTDA, is one lucky participant of LACMANext’s Exchange Program, an abbreviated internship through which the association’s young professionals get the opportunity to learn about the various processes and corporate cultures of other LACMA companies, which are often based in nations other than the participants’ countries of origin.

Lopez recently spent an entire week as a guest of Arpin Van Lines (USA), spending five days at the company’s New York facilities, and the remaining three days at the corporate headquarters in Rhode Island.

The following is a summary of her experiences: “At both facilities, I was able to meet staff members and learn about the firm’s operational system, in addition to getting to know a little about the daily routine of each coordinator."

“The entire experience has helped me to see how the system in the USA is much more practical than the Brazilian one, streamlining the coordination work. Since the customs process in the U.S. is also more expedient and less bureaucratic, moving operations are smooth, as it is not necessary to deal with so many documents. This fact makes the work environment at Arpin quite relaxed, much to my surprise.”

Lopez’s visit to Arpin included covering several work-related topics, such as initial communication, the exchange of information between departments and main accounts; avoiding work redundancies in information handling; customer service quality and follow-ups, and financial issues (mainly focusing on documentation and mandatory forms.)

The Exchange Program proved to be a lot more than an educational experience for Lopez, who visited the Empire State Building, enjoyed the “Lion King” musical at Broadway, and went shopping at Times Square, in addition to discovering the beauty of Newport beach.

“I would like to express a huge ‘thank you’ to Arpin’s entire staff and management for all their attention and for the amusing days they allowed me to enjoy in the United States,” she concluded.

afortunadas participantes del Programa de Intercambio de LACMANext, una pasantía abreviada mediante con la que los profesionales jóvenes de la asociación reciben la oportunidad de conocer sobre los distintos procesos y culturas corporativas de otras empresas LACMA, que a menudo se encuentran en naciones distintas a los países de origen de los participantes.

Lopez pasó recientemente una semana entera como invitada de Arpin Van Lines (EE.UU.), estando cinco días en las instalaciones de la firma en Nueva York y los restantes 3 en la sede corporativa de Rhode Island.

A continuación, un resumen de sus experiencias: “En ambas instalaciones pude conocer a los miembros del equipo y aprender sobre el sistema operativo de la firma, además de conocer un poco sobre la rutina diaria de cada coordinador.

“Toda la experiencia me ha ayudado a ver cómo el sistema en Estados Unidos es mucho más práctico que el brasileño, haciendo más eficiente la coordinación del trabajo. Debido a que el proceso de aduanas en EE.UU. es también más expedito y menos burocrático, las operaciones de mudanzas son tranquilas, ya que no es necesario lidiar con tantos documentos. Este hecho hace que el ambiente de trabajo en Arpin sea relajado, para mi sorpresa”.

La visita de Lopez a Arpin incluyó la cobertura de un número de temas relacionados al trabajo, tales como la comunicación inicial, el intercambio de información entre los departamentos y cuentas principales; evitar redundancias de trabajo en el manejo de información, la calidad del servicio al cliente y el seguimiento, y asuntos financieros (enfocándose principalmente en la documentación y los formularios de rigor).

El Programa de Intercambio probó ser mucho más que una experiencia educativa para Lopez, quien visitó el Empire State Building, disfrutó del musical “Lion King” en Broadway, y pasó una jornada de compras en Time Square, además de descubrir la belleza de Newport beach.

*¿Por qué los agentes envían una solicitud de tarifas de destino copiando a los competidures locales? ¡Vamos! ¿No es esto como una forma etica de enviar emails personales a otros?

*30 days credit when you know that an agent never pays before 60 days or even 90?

*¿30 días de crédito cuando sabes que un agente nunca paga antes de 60 días o hasta 90?

This is hard for a new employee to understand, ha, ha!

Es difícil que un empleado nuevo entienda esto, ¡ja, ja!

*To consign a shipment and the booking agent presents us to the customer with our “competitor’s name”?

It is very awkward to explain to the customer there has been a mistake, or even to see if they consign it correctly – (laughs).

*When you get an email that says “Dear Mr. Nicolle” or “Dear Mrs. Luis”?

This happens quite often and makes us laugh all the time!

*A lead packer once packed an air shipment in which you had to be aware of all the restrictions (batteries, etc.) and then asked the office staff to check the shipment, which turned out to be a sexual toy (an electric one, of course). The client was obviously ashamed when the contents of his shipment became public. Was it really the lead packer’s fault not to really know what the contents were?

The answer is no, as he actually did his job right –he was ensuring no batteries where packed–; nevertheless, the incident was obviously very uncomfortable for all of those involved (CSR, Sales, Booker, local account and the client.)

*Why does the account/booker/friend always call us to recommend that we give the move a “VIP” treatment? (something that we actually do in the first place.) And then, by divine justice or magic, the most unlikely of things happens.

*When you are in the middle of the discussion with a client who says that he paid for the DTD move…and the agent mentions that the client needs to pay for the extra charges.

– This is something that can be avoided.

* ¿Consignar un embarque y que el agente de reservas nos presente con el cliente con el nombre de nuestra “competencia”?

Es muy embarazoso explicar al cliente que ha habido un error, o ver si lo consignaron correctamente (risas).

* Cuando recibes un email que dice “Estimado Sr. Nicolle” o “Estamada Sra. Luis” Esto ocurre bastante a menudo ¡y nos hace reír todo el tiempo!

*Un jefe de embaladores, en cierta ocasión, empacó un embarque aéreo en el que se tenía que conocer todas las restricciones (baterías, etc.) y luego le solicitó al personal de la oficina revisar dicho embarque, que resultó ser un juguete sexual (eléctrico, por supuesto) El cliente estuvo obviamente apenado cuando el contenido de su embarque se hizo público. ¿Fue en realidad la culpa del jefe de embaladores no saber cuál era el contenido?

La respuesta es no, ya que hizo bien su trabajo –asegurarse de que no hubiese baterías en el embarque–; sin embargo, el incidente obviamente fue muy incómodo para los involucrados (CSR, ventas, el agente de reservas, la cuenta local y el cliente).

*¿Por qué el amigo de una cuenta/reservación siempre nos llama para recomendarnos que demos tratamiento “VIP” a una mudanza? (algo que, de hecho, hacemos en primer lugar). Y entonces, como por justicia divina o magia, ocurre la más improbable de las situaciones.

* Cuando estás en medio de una discusión con un cliente que dice que pagó por una mudanza DTD…y el agente menciona que el cliente necesita pagar los costos adicionales.

*At the moment of packing or loading, you are still 5cbm over the limit, and it is precisely the things that came up from IKEA, what he forgot to mention! – It does happen.

–Esto es algo que puede ser evitado.

*When agents tell us to collect charges like demurrage, etc. from their customers prior to delivery.

– Esto sí ocurre.

This puts us in an awkward position, since we were not part of the quoting process, and customs can feel that we are holding their belongings “hostage” until they pay. Why do that to a partner?

Esto nos coloca en una posición incómoda, ya que no fuimos parte del proceso de cotización, y aduanas podría pensar que estamos manteniendo sus menajes “secuestrados” hasta que se paguen. ¿Por qué hacerle esto a un socio?

A VERY ACTIVE MONTH

NEW IPATA BOARD MEMBER

The month of November of 2016 was very active for the personnel of Express Transports (Peru.)

The company was charged with the entire logistics for the recent APEC event (Asia Pacific Economics Cooperation,) organized by Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and which included the participation of the presidents of the United States, Mexico, Russia, and Chile, among the representatives of many other countries. Said event implied the packing and transport of 1100 cbm within a short time period.

The International Pet and Animal Transportation Association recently named Cory Robinette as an at-large Board member. Cory is Air Animal's office manager and also specializes in corporate and international moves.

Likewise during that month, the company contributed with the efforts of ANQUEM, a charity organization for burned children, through the donation of unused paper, cardboard, and plastic.

The recycling of said materials helps to cover the treatment costs for children who have sustained burns. The company’s personnel also took part in the end-of-year event organized by the association on November 24.

UN MES MUY ACTIVO El mes de noviembre de 2016 fue muy activo para el personal de Express Transports (Perú). La empresa estuvo encargada de toda la logística para el evento del APEC (Asia Pacific Economics Cooperation), organizado por el Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de Perú y que contó con la participación de los presidentes de Estados Unidos, México, Rusia, Chile entre muchos otros representantes de otros países. Dicho evento implicó el empaque y traslado de 1100 cbm en un corto periodo de tiempo.

De igual manera, ese mes la compañía brindó su apoyo a ANQUEM (Asociación para el niño quemado), mediante la donación de papel, cartón y plástico no utilizado. El reciclaje del material ayuda a cubrir los costos del tratamiento de los niños que han sufrido quemaduras. El personal de la empresa participó, también, en el evento de fin de año que organizó la asociación el 24 de noviembre.

Cory graduated from the University of South Florida in Tampa with a degree in zoology.

She worked in the Conservation Education Department at Busch Gardens/Tampa talking with guests about various animals on sidewalks throughout the park, setting up the Summer Kids Camp sessions and running the petting zoo. In 2014, Cory was recognized as the Best Operational Service Provider by IPATA.

NUEVO MIEMBRO DE LA JUNTA DIRECTIVA DE IPATA La Asociación Internacional de Transporte de Mascotas y Animales nombró recientemente a Cory Robinette como miembro extraordinario de su Junta Directiva. In his role, Muñoz will be responsible for planning, implementing, managing and facilitating Arpin’s regulatory compliance program for both domestic and international employees, agents and other supply chain partners.

CYBERSECURITY TEST

HONORING FALLEN HEROES

Arpin Group has recently completed a cybersecurity penetration test, administered by an independent firm, to evaluate the company’s defenses against hackers.

Over 20 Arpin Van Lines drivers and agents from locations across the Northeast, Midwest and South, volunteered to collect and deliver remembrance wreaths to be laid at veteran cemeteries on National Wreaths Across America Day on December 17.

Arpin Group hired Digital Boundary Group, a firm that specializes in making companies hackerproof. DBG/Nutanix spends several days in secret, probing Arpin Group’s digital defenses, deploying the same methods that a criminal might use to discover and exploit the company’s potential vulnerabilities.

Each Arpin trailer carried 600 boxes containing 5,400 wreaths. Combined, the 20 Arpin drivers and agents delivered approximately 108,000 wreaths to veteran cemeteries across the United States for remembrance ceremonies.

Stefan was born healthy and strong in Mexico City with his parents and grandparents. He weighed 3,260 kg and measured 52 cm.
