What a great convention we had in Bogotá, Q Colombia! All events were flawless. The JW Marriott hotel, very well located, provided us with excellent service. Again we confirm that Colombians are fantastic hosts. We wish to thank those who worked hard to make this convention a success. First, the LACMA Secretariat team, led by Evelyn, which again did an outstanding job. Gykza, Monica, Chantal and Magda did not cease to work before, during and after the convention. Second, this convention would not have been so great without the support of our local members: Aviomar, Portan, Transpack and ABC Cargo Logistic. They all contributed to its success. Third, LACMA Next, with the participation of 50 members, excelled again with the construction of 5 houses . We congratulate all the participants for the excellent initiative, carried out in the last three years, with their participation in TECHO. For those who do not know, TECHO is a nonprofit organization that mobilizes young volunteers to fight extreme poverty in Latin America, with the construction of transitional houses and support in the implementation of social inclusion programs. It is a noble cause that helps the needy and LACMA Next faces this challenge with great enthusiasm.
From Our PRESIDENT Walter Laffitte
CANAL MOVERS & LOGISTICS, CORP. Panama
We also wish to highlight the other two events organized by LACMA Next. The Multiparques activity and the already so well-known and successful LACMA Next party, at Gaira Cafe. This year's event featured a dinner of typical Colombia dishes and a live band that made everyone get up and dance. We wish to thank all those who, year after year, support this activity, which raises funds for the LACMA S.O.S. program. Fourth, we wish to thank our panelists Laura May Carmack, Ben Ivory, Steve Crooks, John Warlick and Marc Smet who spoke on Compliance: Why is it so important? and likewise, we also thank the moderator, Laura Ganon. Fifth, we want to recognize the sponsors of the two Coffee Breaks: New Haven Moving Equipment and PAC Global Insurance, as well as Willis Relocation Risk Group who sponsors the sweaters and cup/ trophy for the traditional soccer game during our conventions. Finally, I wish to thank all those who attended this convention which had a great turnout. During my recent participation in the FIDI and OMNI conventions, I received many compliments for our conference in Bogota. Thanks to everyone for making the LACMA convention one of the best of our industry.

Next year we will hold our convention in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico from April 23 to 26. In this edition I leave you with many images of the great time we had in Bogota and with this I hope to encourage you to attend Puerto Vallarta, where we will toast with Tequila, as only our Mexican members know how. ORALE MANITO !!!

FROM OUR GENERAL MANAGER
EVELYN DE JAÉN W ithout a doubt, Colombia and our Colombian LACMA members S dazzled us with their generosity and kindness; they carried-out their events with excellence and passion, honoring their slogan: Colombia is Passion!
After the convention, we received many praises, and one in particular gave me much satisfaction, as we work to offer a quality convention, with that very unique and matchless touch that reflects the warmth and joy of our Latin American region. Our affiliate commented: ¨In more than twenty years, I have attended many industry conventions, and I want to tell you that this has been one of the best that I have attended.¨ On behalf of all the LACMA team, I greatly appreciate the compliment; this encourages us to continue to work so that each convention results excellent and memorable for all the participants. Thank you, Colombia and thank you Colombian members for that excellent and warm reception. I reiterate the gratitude expressed by our President in his editorial to all those that contributed so that our convention was grand and successful… All the elements aligned themselves so as to offer a spectacular result! And as all that were present in Colombia know, I did not win the donkey race! I regret to tell you that I will not pursue the gold medal in this competition… No, seriously, I want to thank all those that were in contact after my unfortunate accident asking about my recovery; I greatly appreciate all the emails, calls and lovely flowers. Thank you for the concern and good wishes. LACMA CONVENTION 2016
What A Great Opening ! OPENING CEREMON Y
T he Opening Ceremony began recalling our last convention in Punta del Este… how nice it´s to
remember what a great time we had in such a nice environment. Then, the magical city of Bogotá welcomed us at the Salón Real of the cozy and comfortable hotel, the JW Marriott; the wonderful voices of a Colombian tenor quartet, Montecarlo, all dressed in black surprised us most pleasatly. When we thought it could not get better, the quarted turned into a quintet with the arrival of a melodious femenine voice, dressed all in red. What a delight… these voices reached our souls… what a better welcome! Our President, Mr. Walter Laffitte, gladly welcomed us reminding us that 38 years ago, this majestic city had received us under the Presidency of Mr. Felice Snider (rip), founding member of our association. Mr. Laffitte continued saying that much had changed in our association since then, that LACMA had evolved into a stronger LACMA, and that we needed to look ahead cautiously to face our association´s challenges as well as those of our industry and our region. Then the customary and tradicional roll-call began until the last of the 230 paticipants introduced himself.
Welcome to Colombia, LACMA!

WOW!
A GRAND & MOST WARM WELCOME COCKTAIL!
SPONSORED BY AVIOMAR, S.A.S., COLOMBIA
It is generally said that less is more, but not this time…
A VIOMAR, S.A.S., founding LACMA member, led by our ex-
president, Felice G. Snider, very kindly sponsored our welcome cocktail. This was one spectaular event in every way… from the reception upon our arrival at early hours of the night, in that beautiful park on the banks of a lake, in an environment that seemed to have some magic and charm.
From our arrival to this cozy atmosphere, the band delighted us with their phenomenal latin rythm. The delicious an abundant appetizers and Colombian food, did not wait, nor did the extense variety of drinks.
An illuminated path led us to a place, original but warm, that was specially staged for the occasion, where our hosts, Felice and his lovely wife, Leonora, as well as AVIOMAR´s Comptroller, Miguel Florez, and Manager, Ximena Tobar, as well as several others from this prestigious company, welcomed us.

LACMA CONVENTION 2016
The live music did not stop playing during the evening, and as if it that was not enough, at the end we were cautivated by several salsa shows…which better than the other; each with a different and colorful costume that evidently reflected various traits of the Colombian culture. And the surprise of the night…well, another one… from somewhere in the backstage a piano began to appear… Who was going to play it? And to the surprise of many, no one less, but Samuel Bassin of Johnson Storage & Moving, Colorado! What a surprise! And more surprise for many was to hear how spectacular he played! WOW! A first class artist in the moving industry! An excellent and professional exposition of the host company, AVIOMAR, was presented by its President and CEO Felice Snider, in a very casual and warm manner…reflection of his personality. And lastly, upon leaving, the participants received an already packed ceramic Colombian ¨chivita¨ (typical bus)…lovely final detail.
We thank Felice and Leonora and the entire AVIOMAR team for such exquisite welcome to this beautiful and kind country… It took us 38 years to return to Colombia… and you went all out to welcome us with magical passion!!!

Quién irá a tocarlo? LACMA CONVENTION 2016
COMPLIANCE...
Why is it so Important? PART I
Sebastián Laporta, LACMA´s Board of Direc-
tors Secretary, welcomed everyone to the 49th General Assembly. He then went on to explain the meaning of Compliance, which would be addressed by the invited panelists.
Compliance- It refers to the company obeying all the legal laws and regulations in regards to how to manage the business, their staff and the treatment towards their clients. The concept of compliance is to make sure that corporations act responsibly. So, why is it so important?¨ “To learn more and how the biggest and more developed markets deal with such an important subject,¨ said Mr. Laporta, ¨we have invited five leaders of the industry and also leaders within their companies. We are honored to have you and we thank you in advance¨. Mr. Laporta, then began to introduce each of the panelists and the moderator. Mrs. Laura Ganon, the Moderator, began indicating that compliance was a global trend, 38
LACMANews Magazine
that it had to be in the hearts of the companies and ourselves, and that different countries dealt differently with this matter. She indicated that we had friends, industry leaders, that were here to tell us a little bit how this is changing and impacting our industry. She began asking the panelists relevant questions on the matter and they proceeded to reply accordingly to questions such as: - How has compliance regulations tightened in the past five years and how it has affected you? - How you make sure that your customers are part of the supply chain for which you are responsible? - What is the financial impact of anti-corruption laws and regulations introduced and being enforced around the world for the moving industry? - How do you check your supply chain? -How do you train your people and how do you check to make the risk assessment? - How did one establish procedures to screen clients? - Do you have difficulties with some counties in complying with the rules and how do you cope with them? - Do you see more strict controls in U.S. Customs, any changes in procedures regarding other countries? - Do you see stricter controls in other countries? - Are customers requesting more information and controls? The panelists coincided in that Compliance had seen increased focus in the last five years;
that government contracting companies, corporate accounts, multinationals, and customers were expected to adhere in order to participate in corporate bids with the U.S. Government; that in the U.S. the data security and IT compliance was elevated to what their clients wanted and expected them to do, that it was critical to manage the supply chain, deal with their customers and meet their expectations. They added that there were many requirements that needed to be considered, not only their company´s, but those of their shareholders, customers worldwide, and the regulations of each country involved. So compliance had many layers, that it was important to incorporate other type of requirements into the system. They agreed that it all began with ethics and how one approached ones business; that it needed to be a company culture, that everyone was very vulnerable and it was necessary to really enforce compliance at all levels. Those companies that do not embrace compliance will eventually have an unfortunate situation that may put them out of business; organizations have to be committed to compliance procedures, as they were part of this supply chain.
CONVENCIÓN LACMA 2016
It was indicated that compliance was a consequence of irregularities that were found in the past with the required services and that auditors were then involved so as to verify that the requirements and services were being met. It was noted that perhaps the failure was not to report back to the clients a more industry–wide and standard operations procedure.
"It comes up to: Is it right or is it wrong? It starts from the top, it´s a true belief; we have to establish a better culture. When these regulations are really enforced, it will make the competition more fair; people will choose their partners based on ethics and not just price."
It was also noted that Customs, around the world, was put in place to enforce tariffs and protect their businesses but as the world had shrunk, given all the technological advances, Customs found themselves in different roles.
Anti-corruption laws are a good thing, as it levels the plane field; it will have a positive input on clients and suppliers as this will eliminate schemes, where a few are monopolizing the markets. Almost all customers are requiring absolute compliance with FCPA (Foreign Corrupt Practices Act). The panelists agreed that business relationships had been established with their partners over the years, that it was necessary to understand them, have discussions, and work with them on issues, establishing rules on how they were going to work together. They stressed that it was necessary not only to know their partners, but their personnel -do a background check on the personnel as they deal with customers information and are going into the customers homes; it´s everyones responsibility to always do background checks and verify the procedures. Equally, it was necessary to know your clients. Customer screening was just as important as partner screening. They added that technology was allowing them to manage client screening, that today there were many ways to look up information on clients. It was also indicated that because of costs, short-term assignment customers were seen more often, and that it was necessary to enlighten them on the rules and regulations of the destination country, as that was sometimes a determining factor in what type of assignment was going to be decided for the transferee. That these ¨globalists¨ were usually later reassigned within the region. So they were seeing their clients adjusting their policies for new group needs, specifically the millennials, who did not have, nor care as much, for their possessions. This of course, made a huge impact in regards to household goods allowances.

CUMPLIMIENTO...
¿Por qué es tan importante? PARTE I
NEW
LAURA MAY CARMACK AIReS "Obviously, the legal compliance is the one that has the most impact, those that cost us a lot of respect or do us a lot of civil damage. We have to choose between being liked and being respected; I´d rather be respected." - Quality Manager at AIReS for over twenty years - Before coming to AIReS, worked in the railroad industry for approx. seven years - Past President of the Pan American International Moving Association (PAIMA).

NOW TO BUSINESS GENERAL ASSEMBLY I & II
O n Monday, March 7, before the first session of the LACMA General Assembly, our President, Mr. Walter Laffitte, began
with words of appreciation to Mr. Felice Snider and all the AVIOMAR team, for the excellent welcome cocktail at the Club Los Lagartos, the previous night. He also thanked the panelists for the great exposition on ¨Compliance¨. He went on to say that the ¨Management Relocation Companies¨ handled much of the business of the moves for the multinational companies, that many of them already owned offices in Latin America, and asked where was it we wanted to go as an association, if we wanted to remain as we were, or if we wanted to evolve. He added that a serious, profound and consensual analysis was important. Mr. Laffitte went on to report that in a recent survey, 51% of the 48% members who responded, voted in favor of their entrance to LACMA, 41% against and 8% abstained; he added that it was necessary to face reality, that to continue to grow with strength, dynamism and quality, we should be willing to play in the major leagues. He said that it was not a decision that the Board of Directors would take, but everyone in the General Assembly, in due time. In the General Assembly, as mandatory, the Treasurer´s and Secretariat´s reports were presented and the proposals discussed. This year a large number of changes in the Statutes were presented - most of form and a few others of content which generated greater discussion of the most relevant ones. Mrs. Marcela Balderas of Marcela Balderas Movers & Relocation acted as moderator.

Our Colombian member PORTAN, S.A., very kindly hosted the traditional day trip. It was held at the El Pórtico Restaurant located in Chia, half an hour from Bogotá.
E l Pórtico... a countryside restaurant, hacienda type, is nestled within a replica of a colonial town. Since it opened its doors 45 years ago, it conquers the heart of those
who visit it. They have traditional menus, prepared the old fashion way, with recipes that have not changed through the years... There, we were greeted, with lovely smiles, by the very friendly and beautiful sisters, Paula and Camila Colmenares, of PORTAN, S.A. The always smiling and kind, Mr. Luis Colmenares, father of these two pretty ladies and General Manager of the comapny, later joined the group. Soon came delicious natural juices of various national fruits and delicious typical appetizers, including a taste of colombian "aguardiente". Football (soccer) teams were formed immediately and quickly the game began... as always the rest of the participants watched attentively making jokes, enjoying the ¨professional skills¨ of the players.

LACMA LADIES...
a touchy experience! BY PAULA COLMENARES - PORTAN, S.A.
A ll the LACMA Ladies who attended our event in Bogota would say this one was a very TOUCHY EXPERIENCE!
This year we sponsored the PREMA Charity Foundation, whose objective and slogan is “Educating in human values: Love, Truth, Peace, NonViolence and Honesty”. The director and founder, Maria Paula Avila, along with Paula Colmenares (Portan) surprised the group with the presentation of two children that showed us the real value of love, friendship and care. Lela (a 12 year-old girl) and her friend Juan Sebastian (11) suffering of leuchemia told their story in a very gracious way about how she supported him during his long, isolated and painful quimo treatment while he was at the hospital. By simple and creative gestures she demonstrated to Juan Sebastian how much she CARED about him and their frienship. Gestures like sending him simple but very meaninful presents, such as a feather for him to tickle and get a laugh out of him, a stone as meaning of strenght during the treatment, are a sample of the presents Juan Sebastian appreciated after receiving treatment. The most amazing present was a video with more than 100 encouraging messages sent via social media from famous people that Juan Sebastian admires such as Colombian famous football players, singers, and even the President of Colombia. Lela was the promoter of this meaningful project by sharing contacts with friends and relatives. After this touchy presentation, 45 LACMA Ladies had dinner at a very nice Italian restaurant where amongst stories, laughters, good food and wine made it an unforgettable evening in Bogota. The outcome of the fundraising was US $4.800 which will be invested in children’s activity centers in Apartado, a small isolated Colombian town that has suffered from guerillas activity for more than 20 years. We are greatful for your generosity and spirit and look forward to our next event in Mexico. If you want to see Lela and Juan Sebastian interview, go to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkLU4sEuPCw

LACMA LADIES...

Mita Favalli North International, Italy “I was completely impressed about the session of the 2 kids and very surprised when they came in the room and went on the stage to tell us the story. The innocent and unconditional love of the girl helping her friend to overcome the disease and any kind of depression is admirable and a sort of teaching to love and never give up! I was extremely excited with tears in my eyes and no way to say a word. I appreciated very much the choice to invite those kids sharing their experience with our group.”

"The activity we had this year at LACMA Ladies seemed spectacular. We met two incredible children who told us his story and showed us that nothing is impossible and that if you really want something and work for it, you will succeed and that friendship is one of the most important things in life. We were able to get to know the PREMA foundation, which is in charge of educating through values. It is a non-profit association which performs an extremely valuable job with teachers, parents and children, in order to improve the quality of life. I hope we can learn more about these stories, which not only make us haven a wonderful time, but help us grow as people. "

CONVENCIÓN LACMA 2016
Being LACMA in Colombia, it was appropriate to have as a lecturer the prominent businessman, educator, and catalyst... Pedro Medina; perhaps the Colombian that most believes in his country. In 1999, being a member of the Young Presidents´Organization, a select club of young Presidents, and at the same time professor at the University, Medina went through a couple of experiences that changed his destiny. In 1999, 80% of the kidnappings that occurred worldwide, took place in Colombia, 55% of the country's population lived in poverty, and 400,000 Colombians emigrated that year. Colombia did not appear in travel guides… it appeared under countries to avoid; for many, Colombia was a failed nation.
During that time, at a meeting of executives, he was
asked: what would you do if they did not pay you a penny? What makes you truly happy? According to Medina, the answers revolved around the same context: teach, be a mentor, a catalyst, create ideas, and join links together. Worried by his country´s situation, he then decided to give up a salary of President of a multinational company, cars, bodyguards, driver, and all the prestige and power of his position… he left his successful life in the corporate sector to venture on the task to work towards a positive image of his country. He wanted to remind Colombians that Colombia was a unique country, that it was not only full of bad news. To achieve this, for 18 months, at 5 universities, he formed a research team to find out what made their country special, what gave it magic, who were its heroes, paradigms, and also which were its problems. It was a school of thought over a capable Colombia and Latin America, resourceful, smart, hardworking, passionate, happy, curious, productive and competitive, that exist, but that many do not see. He intended to demonstrate that it was a country that was going through a difficult economic situation, with the bitterness of an internal conflict in the background, and yet was richer than any of the first world.
After researching, the team put together a Conference - ¨Why believe in Colombia? ¨ in a period of eight months, Pedro Medina dictated the conference more than 250 times. And to date, he has reached more than 700,000 people, in more than 160 cities, in more than 30 countries, through more than
5,300 conferences selling the positive side of Colombia.

Medina indicates that they can't sell their country because they have always being taught about its bad side, and not the good one. The media, for example, daily shows bad news... that need to be told, but they are not the only reality of the country. Colombia has an extraordinary side that not even they know about, and if they don't know about the positive things they have and that happen everyday, they cannot tell a different truth. He says that they were always taught from the theme of the races. They were taught that the pure-bred, or the Europeans, were the best, and as they mixed with other breeds, the breed would weaken. Since they were small, as a country, they were instilled that the best came from outside… It all began there. Medina continues: ¨Colombia is a unique country... While every where else is drying, Colombia is the country that has more water per capita in the world, Colombia is the happiest nation on earth according to the survey of happiness in 2004 and 2012; in a world that doesn't have clear how it will feed the next generations, Colombia is one of the seven nations that has an agricultural frontier to plant whatever they want... and thus, an extensive list of the virtues of this country. There is the need to educate people on the country´s virtues... that if the Japanese and Europeans come to the Desert of Tataoa and San Agustin in Colombia, it´s because they are places with many qualities.
¨I Believe in Colombia¨ seeks to empower the Colombians to speak well of the country and to act in its benefit; a strategy aimed to change the mentality towards 72

the positive, directed to build confidence for the country (or whatever you want to be), based on new actions and attitudes. We need to focus on the positive and not the negative… when we change the stories that we tell, we will change the paradigms. ¨
an engineer of his life, that each one starts with a blank canvas and has the privilege to draw the day you want. We all have that moment of decision...
¨Colombia has changed a lot since 1999...
How do we get to see what everyone sees and think something different? How do we achieve inclusion in a country of non-inclusion?
Colombia has gone from a per capita GDP of 1,600 dollars to 7,100 dollars in two decades; it received 5,000 American visitors in 1999, compared to the 500,000 in 2009; it fell from 67 violent deaths per 100,000 inhabitants 10 years ago, to 32. A country that went from having one soccer player in the international leagues in 1990 to 178 now. Foreign investment has increased since then; from 1.8 billion to more than 15 billions. When you see those statistics, you see that things have changed. There are many international tourist guides today that mark Colombia as a place to visit.
How we react to opportunities knowing that opportunities do not come with the opportunity tag on it?
Dramatic improvements can be attributed to three factors mainly: better leadership, the Colombia Plan (initiative for ending the armed conflict in Colombia and to develop a strategy against cocaine), and a more involved civil society.
He added that when we decide, we are able to build a better life. We need to get involved… not just be spectators.
¨I Believe in Colombia¨ seeks to create a community of actors, not victims. Medina stressed that everyone one is an architect and
Do we worry about status and aesthetic issues or issues of substance… do I include or I do exclude… do I build or do I destroy? ¨ It is in that moment of decision, that the life of each one is defined.
Pedro Medina says that one has to start with a dream... that we must stress the importance of the first stone... that you have to begin… because you can!
"Do I trust or I don´t? Do I achieve or not? Do I do or not? ¨
CONVENCIÓN LACMA 2016
Mr. Medina indicated that Colombia has more than 200 years of history... of those, more than 150 have been spent in war and only 47 in peace. That it was time that Colombia turned the page, left behind resentments, that it was time to build bridges, to highlight the positive side of the country. He added that innovation was needed to fill those empty spaces no one wanted to fill… to change the context and create new ideas; the manner in which we say things, of how we ask the questions, changes the answers. He added that it was time to build peace... that peace is not ordered, that it has to be built; that large projects began with a dream. He said that we had to work on it day to day, from neighbour to neighbour; that we have to create networks of solidarity and mutual aid.
¨I believe in Colombia¨ empowers the Colombians to understand their country´s achievements, its potential and resources, and to influence those who build a nation… fair, competitive and of inclusion. Pedro Medina and his team have created added value building the collective self-esteem and social capital of the country. Medina has received hundreds of testimonies from Colombians who have been positively influenced by the organization; they have told him that his message changed their life, that because of his stories, they have decided to stay in Colombia or not to go, or invest, or change their attitudes. He says: ¨our scope is wide... from high school students, to presidential candidates, to business leaders, to beauty queens. ¨ Medina´s initiative has transformed both Colombians individually as well as the country. In a time when the country was at the brink of disaster, Medina worked in close collaboration with a group of business leaders in Bogota to generate hope and confidence among Colombians.
DO YOU MISS THE SUCCESS OF CORPORATE LIFE? I don´t need it… nor the cars, bodyguards or influences. I don´t miss the mega salary, nor the stock options. I don't have too much; I work to live. YOU FOUNDED MCDONALD'S IN COLOMBIA. WHAT DOES IT MEAN IN YOUR LIFE? At the time, when I did it, it was something very important because we became the largest employer of University students in Colombia, 1,125 students; because we managed 350 Colombian suppliers, because we became a reference point and raised the fast food industry´s standard; before McDonald’s, there were many restaurants that did not provide a good service, that did not have the adequate infrastructure to run and had very high prices. This made the sector aware and started to improve. AND WHAT YOU THINK NOW? If at that time I had known what I know now, and had seen life as I do now, I would not have brought McDonald's to the country. First, because the processing and consumption of red meat is one of the three causes of global warming. Also, I wouldn´t do it because I am now pro local, without being anti foreigner; I prefer a small but Colombian restaurant. DO YOU REGRET THE ROLE OF HAVING MANAGED MCDONALD'S IN THE COUNTRY? No, absolutely not. The decisions that one takes are correct because they are based on information and experience one has at the time, and in the context in which one operates. At that time, I was sure that it was a great idea; I was then involved in the corporate sector, and that is why I did it. HAVE YOU GONE BACK TO EAT AT MCDONALD'S? No, because I do not eat red meat nor drink soft drinks.

CONVENCIÓN LACMA 2016
Siendo

¨Confío o no confío? Logro o no logro?

Last January, ATLANTIS took a day to impart a Training for most of the staff and packers. T opics such as customers´ vision during the services, improvement of packing techniques, packing quality and responsibilities, among others, were covered. The day, after seven hours of studying, turned out as a good surprise for all the employees. After the training, the group ended up at a local restaurant for a fun dinner. The training normally brings us a wonderful professional return. Actions like that motivate our employees to work with more commitment. It was clear that the employees were highly satisfied after the training. Some of them, who had attended LACMA Seminar in Brazil, also spoke of their experiences and their knowledge in additional topics they learnt in LACMA´s course. - It's very nice to have the chance to put into practice, in our daily lives, what was learned during the seminars in Sao Paulo ... - words of Roberto Barroso, one of Atlantis participants of LACMA´s Seminar. After this experience, our goal is try to hold at least 2 events like this per year; its good for the group, consequently it's much better for the company.

INTERNATIONAL HHG SHIPMENT VALUATION The appropriate valuation of international household goods shipments is of paramount importance in order to ensure that the transferee’s goods are adequately protected against loss and/or damage during transit. The valuation of shipments may be achieved through the utilization of a detailed valued inventory or the use of lump sum valuation.
W hen detailed valued inventories are used, each item in the shipment is assigned their own individual value.
While this approach is preferred from a coverage provider perspective, because it identifies the individual values of each item, it is time consuming and transferees often opt for lump sum valuation. Lump sum valuation is based on the net weight and/or volume of the shipment, multiplied by a specific $$ amount per lbs. or per cubic foot/meter.
90
LACMANews Magazine
Requirements for lump sum valuations will differ by provider. Generally speaking lump sum valuation is based on the net weight or volume of the shipment, multiplied by a given $XX.XX factor per lbs. or per cu. ft. or cu. meter. In addition to establishing the lump sum shipment value based on the net weight or volume, items of high value are usually listed separately on a high value item inventory, indicating the item(s) individual value. What constitutes ‘high’ value will vary, however generally speaking an item valued at $1,500 or more would be considered high value. In order to capture the appropriate value utilizing the lump sum valuation method, the Lump Sum Value is added to the value of the high value items [Lump Sum Value + Value of High Value Items (value of all high value items) = Total Shipment Value]. The important takeaway is that whatever valuation method that is utilized, it needs to be applied consistently and appropriate for the individual account and/or mover. For example, issuing coverage for only a portion and/or only high value items in a shipment does not provide the transferee with adequate coverage and it could lead to the application of Co-Insurance in the event of a claim. Please keep in mind that this discussion of valuation is a rudimentary explanation, it is designed to spur you to discuss the matter with your individual service providers. Whether utilizing itemized inventories or lump sum in order the establish valuation, understanding what drives your individual loss experience is essential to operating a successful valuation program.

BY BORIS POPULOH SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT WILLIS RELOCATION RISK GROUP

At school I just read "Four Loves by C.S. Lewis and I recommend it because it is a very deep book about four different types of feelings. WE KNOW THAT YOU WILL SOON BE GOING TO THE UNIVERSITY. WHAT CAREER WILL YOU STUDY AND HOW DOES THIS DECISION FIT IN YOUR FUTURE PLANS? I graduate this December from High School and I want to study Business at a very good university in the United States. In the future, I am interested to continue working at Canal Movers & Logistics, as I am very proud of the company that my parents founded 15 years ago. FAVORITE PASTIMES: Well, the truth is that I always like to keep myself busy and I have several hobbies that I enjoy. C
FOR YOU, WHAT IS A SUCCESSFUL PERSON? A successful person is someone who not only tries to improve oneself, but in the process also tries to help others to become better human beings. I feel successful when I help in the organizations where I am involved: Rotary International (Interact), Operation Smile, and United Way. YOUR FAVORITE PLACE IN THE WORLD IS... San Blas for sure! It is a group of islands in the Caribbean Sea of Panama, where there are more than 365 islands, one for every day of the year. The water is transparent, white sand and you feel in complete connection with nature. You are disconnected from internet and social networks, enjoying the beach 100%. WE KNOW THAT YOU HAVE PARTICIPATED IN SOME CONVENTIONS; WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF THE MOVING CONVENTIONS? My first convention was LACMA 2010 in Nassau, Bahamas and years later, Costa Rica. Last year I had the opportunity to go to LACMA in Punta del Este, FIDI in Cape Town and OMNI in Victoria Falls. This year I also went to LACMA in Bogota. My favorite part is to be able to see the world, meet with friends I have made, learn and have fun at the same time. MENTION A PERSONALITY WHICH YOU ADMIRE. WHY? I don't have a personality which I admire, but I would like to mention that I admire my mother, as she always looks for solutions to all the problems, tries to be as fair as possible, and gives the best of herself to all of us. THREE WAYS TO STAY POSITIVE IN ANY CIRCUMSTANCE. My father is my luckycharm for sports. He keeps me positive in all my games, he motivates me and accompanies me to all my sports events. When I am alone, I remember my mother´s words to automotivate myself and always have a positive attitude, because that makes the difference and finally, but most importantly, I pray to God.
¿QUÉ LIBRO HAS LEÍDO ÚLTIMAMENTE QUE QUISIERAS RECOMENDAR?

Dear All,
Estimados todos,
With great pleasure and pride I share the results of LACMANext´s TECHO Colombia 2016.
In Costa Rica we were about 14 LACMA members collaborating with TECHO, in Uruguay about 25 to 30 and now in Colombia a total of 50 LACMA volunteers. Impressive that despite the security level of the country, there was much more support from our members to get involved in such noble and necessary cause.
This time we helped with only a full working day; all the options presented different levels of complexity: huge stones, steep land slopes, difficult access to transport material, etc. This was not an obstacle to give the best we had, for all our groups. We are pleased to see that the desire to help by non-latin members increases every year - more females, more younger children, and especially, elderly people with great will and energy to do their bit for another social responsibility event. Thank you, Bogotá, thanks for allowing us to contribute! It was very emotional for all in LacmaNext to see the results of our presentation at the opening of the convention in Bogota, when we achieved a revenue of above USD 35,000.00; especially to see the excitement and excellent feedback for the good cause and footprint we are leaving behind. Thanks to all of you, because without your support we could not continue with such projects. Hopefully, we will soon manage to start these projects with our companies, in our own countries. LACMANext - The best generation is yet to come!

TECHO DAY March 5th, 2016 - Bogota, Colombia.
W ow, what an experience!!! If you missed TECHO day this year, then you are still not
involved?!?! You MUST sign up for next year and be part of this amazing day. First, I thought that this day was only open to LACMA Next members but when I found out that it was open to ALL, I jumped on the opportunity to get involved. The experience was amazing and inspiring to all the participants as much as it was to the families we helped. I must admit that it was heart-breaking to see kids (and adults) living under those conditions with no running water, toilets and good electricity. Yet‌.. we met amazing people that are thankful for what they have. I wish that I could bring my kids for the day to show them that not everything is about X-BOX and going to the movies. I did receive my own reality-check years ago when my son was diagnosed with cancer at 17th month old (ALL Leukemia). 96
LACMANews Magazine
He is now a Junior in High school and completely cured, but it gave me a different perspective on life. I think that it is important to get involved not only to help others, but also to help us remember that not everyone is as fortunate as us.
There is something for everyone to do; from digging to measuring, holding and just being there with a good spirit. There is no excuse not to get involved! I hope to see you ALL next year in Mexico helping people who really need the help in any sense of the word!
SECCIÓN LACMA NEXT
W

I'M A MOVER PART II Continuing with the series started by John Seal - LacmaNews December edition working in our industry is not common and in Brazil it's also a (funny) challenge to explain what we do when someone asks.
Itript allto starts when we have a a Convention... many of us have multiple annual conventions, and so begin the inquiries: "Why do you travel a lot?"-and then other questions continue: "You are a mover? And is there this kind of need internationally? People really take their goods to another country?" For some people, the attention is lost when they try to understand how goods leave the country (??). It's really funny. Questions like: "you use a truck for that?" – Many doubts arise for some people who feel this possibility does not exist when considering an international move from South America to Europe. Questions like: "why sea shipments to move from Brazil to Argentina when both countries border each other?"
I particularly love to explain this business exists, and that it is really very developed. I remember in my university in our International Relations course, we were 54 people - I was the only one in the moving industry. Being a mover also has the "glamour" of trips to nice places, friends everywhere in the world, besides the benefit of dealing with people well seen in society such as players, singers or Important board members of large companies.
Regardless to whom one talks, my eyes fill with pride to explain what I do and how I do it, after all, everything that is done with love is easy to share.

We started with a little bit of meditation, which for me was a first. I admit that I did more laughing than meditating as the instructors breathed deeply into their microphones, and told us to think about beaches, rain, bathtubs, etc. I tried to keep it together, but when my eyes were closed, and I hear someone with a deep voice say “imagine the wind on your body…” into the microphone, keeping my composure was simply not an option. Mediation may not be something I will do very often in the future, but it was fun to try it!
Bogota, was a fantastic learning experience, and a great way to spend productive time with friends at the LACMA Conference.
From there, we went on to the teambuilding activities which were organized as competitions with the other teams. We had to race cars, race boats, and shoot at each other with airpowered pellet guns. Fun! While enjoyable for obvious reasons, we were able to take away some important leadership lessons. Successful teams always had a strategy going into the activities, and an overall supportive, and positive attitude. Sometimes we lose sight of the fact that what makes us successful when having fun, can also help to make us successful in a working environment.
I highly encourage the LACMA membership to join in the fun next year in Mexico!

THAI SCHOOL ENJOYS BRAND NEW FACILITIES THANKS TO JOINT INTERNATIONAL FUNDING INITIATIVE
John
Mason International has teamed up with IMC World International Mobility Convention and other global removals companies to help provide new facilities for a school in Thailand. John Mason, the international removals specialist, donated funds towards the initiative, which equipped pupils at Wat Suwankheereekhet School in Phuket with playground facilities, school uniforms, shoes, learning equipment, and the firm’s famed Moving Gang cuddly toys. John Mason International’s Simon Hood joined the region’s minister for education and other IMC delegates at a special unveiling ceremony at the school. “The IMC World Mobility Convention aims to give back to communities wherever it holds its annual convention - and this was an excellent example of that,” he said. “It was wonderful to see the children enjoying the new facilities - and getting used to wearing their new school uniform,” he said. “John Mason International moves people around the world and we are committed to supporting important international projects that reflect our strong family-oriented ethos." “The joint venture collected more than ten thousand dollars for Wat Suwankheereekhet School - and this has had a tremendous effect on morale among both pupils and staff there." “Children attending the school must wear a uniform but many parents earn meagre monthly wages and need extra help to sustain their youngsters’ education. So this is an incredibly worthy cause and we were pleased to provide our backing.” Wat Suwankheereekhet School in Karon Beach caters for 130 students from grade 7 to 12 and features six classrooms. Pupils are taught by 10 teachers in a range of subjects - including Thai language, maths, English, science, PE and art.

Mason International is offering movers the chance to instantly add up the cost of packing up and relocating abroad - thanks to the launch of its smart new online quote tool. The international removals specialist has created an Instant Quote estimator. “Users can simply fill in the form online with information about their move and select the items they wish to transport,” said John Mason International’s chief operating officer Noel Briscoe. “They simply tap the type of property they are packing up and then work their way through each room clicking on the possessions they plan to take with them. “And for more general items, a click on ‘Extras’ might be just the trick. This is where people can account for those endless boxes of Christmas decorations filling the loft if they’re coming too.” Movers can get a quote at any time by clicking ‘Get Quote’ to price up their move as they go along. Or they can total it all up at the end. “And, for more tailored removals or if there are specific items to be accounted for - our movers can even send in photos or a video of their possessions via the same powerful portal. This revolutionary digital survey is among the first of its kind anywhere in the world and gives us a much more accurate idea of the belongings our customers are moving. “All they need do is snap away or shoot some quick videos on their smartphones, add the room name or number - and a quick description - and upload it all in an instant.
