ISRUPTION! Such a famous word nowadays; sometimes used without us knowing what it actually means, and sometimes overrated, for being the fashionable term in the world of business.

In principle, the word implies a very deep concept of a new reality which, in practical terms, I define with the examples of UBER and NETFLIX. Two visions, that adapted themselves to what the consumer actually wanted and which pushed two old rigid models, TAXIS and BLOCKBUSTER, respectively, out of their comfort zone.

In our industry, the model has already changed and we will surely have new realities to come, to the point of having 3D printers and teleportation (which as a young boy, I used to watch on “The Jetsons”), become a reality, thus forcing us to hold on to our trade no longer. Consequently, it is very important for us to act and reflect the reality of our business, and that associations such as LACMA become the platform through which said reality may materialize.

It is for this reason that we, the members of the Board of Directors, consider very relevant everyone's real participation, and it is why, in my first editorial letter, I wish to get across this message: “all constructive contributions count”. Our ambitious, yet feasible, Strategic Plan calls for this, so I hereby invite you to become an active part of our project. We are generating various ways of fostering such participation, of listening to all that needs to be said and to channel this in an inclusive manner.

I am sure that, aligned with clear tasks and objectives, the reactivation of the committees will yield fruit. It is my duty, nevertheless, to remind you that we will face difficulties in the road ahead, but as leaders of moving companies, we will be able to deal with them in order to be successful. We need, therefore,

¡ ISRUPCIÓN! Famosa palabra por estos días; a veces, usada sin saber a qué realmente corresponde, y otras, agotada, por ser el término de moda en el mundo de los negocios. En principio, la palabra encierra un concepto muy profundo de una nueva realidad que, en términos prácticos, defino con los ejemplos de UBER y NETFLIX. Dos visiones, que se adaptaron a lo que realmente quería el consumidor y que sacaron, de su zona de confort, a los rígidos y viejos modelos del TAXI y BLOCKBUSTER, respectivamente.

En nuestra industria, el modelo ya ha cambiado y, de seguro, tendremos nuevas realidades por venir, al punto de que las impresoras 3D o la teletransportación (que veía de pequeño en “Los Supersónicos”) se conviertan en una realidad y no tengamos más nuestro oficio. Consecuentemente, es muy importante que actuemos y reflejemos la realidad de nuestro negocio y que asociaciones como LACMA sean la plataforma a través de la cual dicha realidad se materialice.

Es por esto que nosotros, los miembros de la Junta Directiva, vemos muy relevante la real participación de todos, y es por eso que, en mi primer editorial, deseo hacer llegar este mensaje: “todo aporte constructivo suma”. Nuestro ambicioso, pero alcanzable Plan Estratégico así lo contempla y, por eso, les invito a formar parte activa de nuestra gestión. Estaremos generando diversas maneras para fomentar dicha participación, de escuchar todo lo que hay para decir, y canalizarlo de manera incluyente.

Estoy seguro que la reactivación de los comités, alineados con tareas y objetivos claros, dará fruto. Es mi deber, no obstante, recordarles que tendremos dificultades en el camino, pero si somos líderes en compañías de mudanzas, podremos con ellas para ser exitosos. Para ello, deberemos anteponer los egos que son lo que más daño hacen al bien común y que, una vez

to overcome our ego, which is the most damaging thing to the common good and which, once divided, makes the search of agreements that will protect our companies, from measures implemented against our own survival, even more difficult.

The training processes will also be revised, analyzing what is currently required in our industry in addition to the acquisition of knowledge.

We are paying close attention to the changes in the Guarantee Program, an action that requires us to be consistent in order to be aligned, and so that our PGP maintains its viability, although things surely don’t end there. It will also be necessary to propose new alternatives in order to make our business reality viable.

As you may see, there is a lot to be done, and hands will be needed to have it all completed in the least possible time. So, welcomed are those who want to be part of this change!

Lastly, time is something that cannot be stored. This was the central theme of our past convention in Panama, during which we had lasting memories that can, indeed, be treasured. In this issue, we will leave an imprint of what the event turned out to be, characterized by fraternity, a sample of what LACMA is and its relevance in our industry, not without thanking all those who were present, our sponsors, the local members, and our staff in Panama.

Los procesos de capacitación también serán revisados, analizando qué se requiere actualmente en nuestra industria, a parte de la adquisición de conocimiento.

Estamos muy atentos a los cambios en los Programas de Garantía, acción que requiere que seamos consecuentes para estar alineados, y para que nuestro PGP mantenga su viabilidad, aunque las cosas, de seguro, no terminan allí. También será preciso proponer nuevas alternativas a fin de hacer viable nuestra realidad de negocio.

Como ven, hay mucho por hacer, y manos harán falta para completarlo todo, en el menor tiempo posible. ¡Así que bienvenidos sean aquellos que quieran ser parte del cambio!

Por último, el tiempo es algo que no podemos almacenar. Éste fue el eje central de nuestra pasada convención en Panamá, durante la cual tuvimos recuerdos memorables que sí podemos atesorar.

En esta edición, dejaremos plasmada una huella de lo que fue ese evento, caracterizado por la fraternidad, una muestra de lo que es LACMA y su relevancia en nuestra industria, no sin antes agradecer a todos los asistentes, a nuestros patrocinadores, los miembros locales y a nuestro equipo de Panamá.

C ada convención conlleva detalles y planificación… más la celebrada el pasado mes de Febrero, ameritaba un toque

especial. Fue con mucho gusto y cariño que trabajamos para brindarles en Panamá, lugar en donde está registrada y situada la Secretaría de la Asociación, una convención singular, en conmemoración del quincuagésimo aniversario de LACMA.

ach convention takes planning and details…yet the convention that took place last February, required a special touch. It was with much pleasure and warmth that we worked to offer you in Panama, where our association is both registered and based, a unique convention honoring the fiftieth anniversary of LACMA. I trust that the experiences of those days, which have been captured in this Special LACMANews issue, may have been most pleasant, leaving enduring memories for all who were able to attend. It was an occasion to celebrate, in a very special manner, the fifty years of the association’s trajectory in a warm, friendly, and joyful framework... characteristic of Latin America.

It is proper to thank all the members for their contributions, which made both the celebration of our fiftieth anniversary and a refurbished office possible. We also extend our gratitude to those who attended, to the active members of Panama for a generous and warm welcome to our country, to the sponsors, who with their support allowed us to give a special touch to the event. In a very special manner, our appreciation to the Secretariat’s personnel who, worked hard for several months in order to achieve the goals and provide a unique and successful convention.

The event offered the ideal opportunity to acknowledge and honor those who, with determination and commitment, forged a Latin American organization with the main objective of protecting the interests of the moving companies of the region, and also to recognize those who continued with that legacy throughout the years, always maintaining high the association’s banner that represents LACMA today...warm, respected, and in constant evolution.

It was the time to honor the past that, with its virtues and imperfections, has brought us to the present and will shape the structure of the future. The experiences created along the road will certainly lead the path that lies ahead!

We have celebrated a landmark in the history of LACMA; it is now our responsibility to work on the present to forge a good future for the association and its members. We are witnessing a generational renewal that comes with a great desire to work to adapt itself to the current needs and demand, aware that the future will bring great challenges that require attention today.

LACMA is the sum of its members and owes itself to them; that entails a shared responsibility. A few months ago, the Board of Directors worked on a Strategic Plan for the next five years; it is now everyone’s the duty to contribute and get involved, in a constructive manner, to achieve those necessary adjustments that will allow LACMA to prevail and continue active in the industry for the benefit of its members.

We now start a new phase in LACMA’s history; let’s continue, also with determination and commitment, that valuable legacy and forge a promising future!

Confío en que las vivencias de esos días, plasmadas en esta Edición Especial de LACMANews, hayan sido muy gratas, dejando memorables recuerdos para todos los que asistieron.

Fue una ocasión para celebrar de manera muy especial el recorrido de cincuenta años de esta asociación, en un marco cálido, amistoso y jovial… característico de latinoamerica.

Merece agradecer a todos los miembros por sus aportes, que hicieron posible realizar una memorable conmemoración de cincuenta años y una remodelación de la oficina. También nuestro agradecimiento a los que asistieron, a los miembros activos de Panamá por la generosa y cálida bienvenida a nuestro país, y a los auspiciantes, quienes con su colaboración nos permitieron dar un toque especial a los eventos. De manera muy especial, se le agradece al personal de la Secretaría que trabajó arduamente por varios meses, para lograr los objetivos y brindar una convención única y exitosa.

El acontecimiento fue propicio para reconocer y honrar a aquellos que, con determinación y compromiso, forjaron una asociación latinoamericana, con el principal objetivo de velar por los intereses de las empresas de mudanzas de la región, y también reconocer a quienes continuaron ese legado a través de los años, manteniendo siempre elevada la bandera de la asociación que hoy día es LACMA…cálida, respetada y en constante evolución.

Correspondía rendir tributo a ese pasado que, con sus virtudes y sus fallas, nos trajo al presente y dará forma a la estructura del futuro; son las experiencias que deja el camino recorrido, las que dirigen el camino por venir.

Hemos celebrado un hito en la historia de LACMA; corresponde ahora trabajar en el presente para forjar un buen futuro para la asociación y sus afiliados. Estamos viendo un relevo generacional que viene con muchas ansias de trabajar para adaptarse a las demandas y necesidades actuales, conscientes de que el porvenir trae retos importantes para los que hay que enfocarse hoy.

LACMA es el conjunto de sus miembros y se debe a todos ellos; eso implica una responsabilidad compartida. Hace pocos meses, la Junta Directiva trabajó un Plan Estratégico para los próximos cinco años; corresponde a todos contribuir e involucrarse, de manera constructiva, para lograr esos ajustes necesarios que permitan a LACMA prevalecer y continuar activa en la industria, para el beneficio de sus afiliados.

Iniciamos una nueva etapa en la historia de LACMA; continuemos, también con determinación y compromiso, ese valioso legado y seamos todos forjadores de un futuro prometedor!

LACMA conventions are often described as family events, but this year, our annual celebration had a special twist: it actually took place at the host country of the association’s headquarters: Panama! LACMA’s staff, gave attendees a warm Panamanian welcome as they engaged in registry procedures at Hotel Santa María Golf & Resort. Likewise, special gift was delivered to each member, courtesy of LACMA: a custom-fitted Panama Hat.

group of LACMA members of all ages took advantage of Panama’s sunny February weather to enjoy an unguided tour of Casco Viejo –Panama City’s Old Quarter—as an option to the commemorative Roman Catholic mass held at San José church on Sunday morning, February 17.

Known for its eclectic mixture of Spanish, French, and Caribbean architectural styles, Casco Viejo is the place to which the city of Panama was relocated after its destruction in 1671. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO (along with the ruins of Old Panama) in the late 1990s.

n grupo de miembros LACMA de todas las edades aprovechó el soleado clima de febrero en Panamá para disfrutar de una gira no guiada del Casco Antiguo de la ciudad, como una opción a la misa conmemorativa realizada en la iglesia de San José la mañana del domingo, 17 de febrero.

Conocida por su ecléctica mezcla de estilos arquitectónicos españoles, franceses y caribeños, el Casco Antiguo es el sitio hacia donde se trasladó la ciudad de Panamá luego de su destrucción en 1671. Fue declarado (junto con las ruinas de Panamá La Vieja) Patrimonio de la Humanidad por UNESCO a finales de los años 1990.

50th Anniversary Commemoration Mass

On Sunday, February 17, Panama City’s San José church hosted a special mass to commemorate LACMA’s 50th anniversary, an activity attended by a group of members and past presidents of the association.

El domingo 17 de febrero, la iglesia de San José de ciudad de Panamá ofreció una misa especial de conmemoración por el aniversario número 50 de LACMA, a la que asistió un grupo de miembros y ex presidentes de la asociación.

Located in Panama City’s Old Quarter, San José church harbors the iconic Golden Altar, the most valuable item saved from the destruction of the old city of Panama by English pirate Sir Henry Morgan, in 1671.

Situada en el Casco Antiguo de ciudad de Panamá, la iglesia de San José alberga el icónico altar de oro, la estructura más valiosa salvada de la destrucción de Panamá La Vieja por el pirata inglés, Sir Henry Morgan, en 1671.

anama City’s American Trade Hotel, a recently-restored early 20th-century property, hosted this year’s traditional luncheon honoring the association’s past Presidents and the current Board of Directors. The activity took place a few hours prior to the opening of the 2019 convention on Sunday February 17.

A number of former presidents took the opportunity to share memories of their respective terms with members of the current Board in a spirit of friendship and camaraderie.

El evento se realizó unas horas antes de la apertura de la convención 2019, el domingo 17 de febrero.

Un número de ex presidentes aprovecharon la oportunidad para compartir memorias de sus respectivos períodos con los miembros de la actual Junta en un espíritu de amistad y camaradería.

Hey, I was there back then...!

ne of the main features of the 2019 LACMA convention in Panama was the Time Warp –a series of blow-ups depicting landmark moments throughout the association’s history, and which decorated the entrance to the main points of activity at Hotel Santa María Golf & Resort.

The Time Warp offered countless photo opportunities of this year’s rendezvous in the land of the Panama Canal.

na de las principales características de la convención LACMA 2019 en Panamá fue el Túnel del Tiempo –serie de gigantografías que ilustraron momentos cumbre a través de la historia de la asociación, y que decoraron la entrada a los principales puntos de actividad en el Hotel Santa María Golf & Resort.

El Túnel del Tiempo ofreció innumerables oportunidades fotográficas del encuentro de este año en la tierra del Canal de Panamá.

he moment everybody had been waiting for, the Opening Ceremony of LACMA’s 50th anniversary convention, arrived in the early evening hours of Sunday, February 17, at Hotel Santa María Golf & Resort.

Vivid were the emotions evoked by the memories of the Puerto Rico convention, Panama’s welcome video, and the performance

by Panamanian violinist Melanie Taylor, who was accompanied by a talented dancer.

Vivas fueron las emociones que provocaron los recuerdos de la convención de Puerto Rico, el video de bienvenida de Panamá, y la presentación de la violinista panameña Melanie Taylor, quien estuvo acompañada de una talentosa bailarina.

As each year, after the invocation, LACMA members who had passed away during the previous year were honored with a special video, followed by a moment of silence. In addition, the association’s new members were formally presented to the membership. They are:

ight after the formalities of the Opening Ceremony, LACMA members boarded their buses and headed to the Miraflores Locks Visitors’ Center at the Panama Canal, the chosen site of the convention’s Welcome Cocktail.

Balmy breezes from the nearby Pacific Ocean created the perfect ambiance for the strengthening of old friendships and the creation of new ones through networking.

The experience allowed the members to witness the full transit of a ship at Miraflores Locks –a rather rare occurrence, as large vessels tend to transit during morning hours.

LACMA’s Welcome Cocktail was sponsored by Panamanian members, Canal Movers & Logistics Corp. and Panama Packing & Storage, in addition to the shipping company, Ocean Network Express (Panama) Inc. (non-member).

Jlosusto después de las formalidades de la Ceremonia de Apertura, miembros de LACMA abordaron sus autobuses para dirigirse al Centro de Visitantes de las esclusas de Miraflores del Canal de Panamá, el sitio escogido para el Cóctel de Bienvenida de la convención.

Las cálidas brisas del cercano Océano Pacífico crearon el ambiente perfecto para el fortalecimiento de viejas amistades y la creación de nuevas, mediante el networking.

La experiencia permitió a los miembros apreciar el tránsito completo de un buque por las esclusas de Miraflores –un evento poco común, ya que los grandes barcos tienden a transitar en horas de la mañana.

ntitled, "The Future of Work and Organizations," the presentation of Santiago Bilinkis, the first Guest Speaker of this year’s convention in Panama, turned out to be a true eye-opener prior to the First Session of the General Assembly on the morning of February 18.

It seemed that the speaker’s energy, combined with the topic addressed that morning had rendered the audience without the ability to blink throughout the hour-long intervention. After all, did he say two-thirds of the jobs we know today will disappear in the next few decades because of computers?

Although the answer to the aforementioned question was affirmative, Bilinkis reminded the audience that the phenomenon of technology replacing human effort was not new. “Until not long ago, operators were used to connect both parties of a phone call, whereas today, cell phones are capable of sending images and text around the world in a split second. Although it is true that technology can be pinpointed as one of the main causes behind job loss, it is also the creator of more fascinating and challenging ones”, he explained.

itulada “El Futuro del Trabajo y las Organizaciones”, la presentación de Santiago Bilinkis, el primer Orador Invitado de la convención de este año en Panamá, resultó ser una experiencia reveladora antes de la Primera Sesión de la Asamblea General, la mañana del 18 de febrero.

Pareció que la energía del orador, combinada con el tema abordado aquella mañana, dejó al público sin la habilidad de parpadear durante la intervención, de una hora de duración.

Después de todo, ¿dijo él que dos tercios de los trabajos que conocemos en la actualidad desaparecerán en unas cuantas décadas por las computadoras?

Si bien la respuesta a la mencionada pregunta fue afirmativa, Bilinkis recordó a la audiencia que el fenómeno de reemplazar el esfuerzo humano por la tecnología no era nuevo. “Hasta no hace mucho, se utilizaban operadoras para conectar ambas partes de una llamada telefónica, mientras que hoy, los celulares son capaces de enviar imágenes y texto alrededor del mundo en una fracción de segundo. Aunque es cierto que la tecnología puede señalarse como una de las principales causas detrás de la pérdida de empleos, también es la creadora de trabajos más fascinantes y desafiantes”, explicó.

Bilinkis introduced the audience to "deep learning," an artificialintelligence concept that allows computers to surpass humans in fields such as medicine, journalism, and even law. “The scenario this phenomenon creates for the job market is like going to the Olympics without knowing what sport one will compete in until five minutes prior to the competition”, he stated.

Interestingly, however, the speaker’s recommendations for this rather uncertain outlook did not sound at all like rocket science, and are summarized as: 1. To strive to be like centaurs (to combine human and high-tech skills to the fullest).

2. To develop a permanent willingness to innovate, and 3. To develop empathy. On this particular recommendation, he commented, “I believe telemarketing will be one of the first sectors to disappear, not because of computers per se, but because humans have learned to act like machines, and have simply forgotten what makes us unique."

Bilinkis introdujo el público al “deep learning”, concepto de inteligencia artificial que permite a las computadoras sobrepasar a los humanos en campos como la medicina, el periodismo y hasta el derecho. “El escenario que crea este fenómeno para el mercado laboral es como ir a las olimpíadas sin saber en qué deporte competiremos hasta cinco minutos antes de la competencia”, detalló.

Es interesante señalar, sin embargo, que las recomendaciones del orador para este futuro incierto no parecieron sacadas de la ciencia espacial, y se resumen así: 1. Esforzarnos en ser como centauros (combinando al máximo las destrezas humanas y de la alta tecnología).

2. Desarrollar un permanente deseo de innovar, y 3. Crear empatía. Sobre esta recomendación en especial, comentó, “Creo que el telemercadeo será uno de los primeros sectores en desaparecer, no por las computadoras en sí mismas, sino porque los humanos han aprendido a actuar como máquinas, y sencillamente han olvidado lo que nos hace únicos”.

he Second Session of the General Assembly of the 2019 LACMA convention in Panama started with the checking of the quorum by Board Director Mr. Santiago Bosch, followed by the approval of the minutes proposed during last year’s convention in Puerto Rico, and the approvals of the Treasury and General Secretariat reports.

Afterward, Lucrecia Sikora, the Board’s Associate Director, took to the stage to give her annual report, in addition to informing the membership of the decision made by the associate members to reelect her as the Associate Director for the 2019-2021 period.

Soon after, Luis Holst, LACMANext’s newly-elected President, also went to the podium, this time, to promote the group’s initiatives (the annual party, the TECHO project, etc.), and to announce that a new donation goal for the LACMA S.O.S. program ($50,000) had been met.

Poco después, Luis Holst, el nuevo Presidente de LACMANext, también subió al podio, esta vez, para promover las iniciativas del grupo (la fiesta anual, el proyecto de TECHO, etc.) y anunciar que una nueva meta para la donación del programa LACMA S.O.S ($50,000) se había cumplido.

The climax of the General Assembly’s Second Session was the Board of Directors’ election, which was called by LACMA’s outgoing President, Mr. Sebastián Laporta. Presided by Luis Silva, Fabricio Bertoldo, and Jorge McCormack, this year’s process yielded a new nomination to the role of Board Director: that of Patrick Heinimann (Intermud – Guatemala).

La cúspide de la Segunda Sesión de la Asamblea General fue la elección de la Junta Directiva, que fue convocada por el Presidente saliente, Sr. Sebastián Laporta. As LACMA’s tradition dictates, Sebastián Laporta, the association’s outgoing President, handed the presidential medal over to his successor, Mr. Miguel Florez. Earlier in the session, Laporta had thanked Past President Walter Laffitte (who retired from the Board this year) for his excellent service and dedication to the association, in addition to giving a heartfelt farewell address.

Tal como dicta la tradición de LACMA, Sebastián Laporta, el Presidente saliente de la asociación, entregó la medalla presidencial a su sucesor, Sr. Miguel Flórez. Más temprano en la sesión, Laporta había agradecido al Ex Presidente Inmediato, Walter Laffitte, (quien se jubiló de la Junta este año) por su excelente servicio y dedicación a la asociación, además de brindar un cálido discurso de despedida.

Mr. Carlos Urriola is President of SSA International, and is in charge of the marketing area, clients’ contracts, and operations of all of Carrix’s international container terminals. He is also responsible for the regulatory norms of Manzanillo International Terminal – Panamá, S.A. in his role as President.

Urriola started working at MIT in 1995 and was promoted as President of SSA International in February, 2017. He has collaborated with numerous commercial and maritime organizations, both national and international, having twice been President of the Maritime Chamber of Panama (2002-2003).

El Sr. Carlos Urriola es el Presidente de SSA International. Bajo su responsabilidad se encuentra el área de mercadeo, los contratos de los clientes y las operaciones de todas las terminales internacionales de contenedores de Carrix. También está a cargo de las normas regulatorias de Manzanillo International Terminal – Panamá, S.A. como su Presidente.

Urriola inició sus labores en MIT en 1995.

En feb. de 2017, fue promovido a Presidente de SSA International. Ha colaborado con numerosas organizaciones comerciales y marítimas, tanto nacionales como internacionales, habiendo ocupado dos veces la presidencia de la Cámara Marítima de Panamá (año 2002-2003).

An overview of the changing world of international transport

D

uring his presentation entitled, “Panama, more than a canal,” Mr. Carlos Urriola, president of Manzanillo International Terminal – Panamá, S.A., not only highlighted the benefits of the country’s logistics industry but also presented an overview of the changing world of international transport.

Urriola, who leads one of the continent’s most successful seaport operations, presented the port of Manzanillo as a strategic partner of the moving industry vis-a-vis that are challenges shared by both sectors, such as Blockchain (the current discrepancy over the exchange of codes in the shipping industry;) the emergence of Amazon and Alibaba as possible competitors to the transport industry; cyber-attacks, and mergers in the shipping industry, a fact that will result in rate increases that could well be transferred to the end client.

Likewise, Urriola motivated LACMA members to take note of the policies implemented by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) with regards to the sulfur contamination issued by vessels, and which will enter into effect in 2020.

Prior to the customary question-and-answer session, Urriola ended his presentation with a series of recommendations that included addressing the cultural changes of the industry’s clients (the case of millennials who favor experiences over the acquisition of goods;) to leverage from the advantages resulting from “Brexit,” to make the rate adjustments pertaining to the impending corporate changes in the shipping word, and to lean towards technological innovation to remain competitive.

Mr. Urriola’s intervention took place on the morning of February 20, prior to the Second Session of the General Assembly.

urante su presentación titulada “Panamá, más que un canal”, el Sr. Carlos Urriola, presidente de Manzanillo International Terminal – Panamá, S.A., no solo resaltó los beneficios de la industria logística del país, sino también un vistazo al cambiante mundo del transporte internacional.

Urriola, quien dirige una de las operaciones portuarias más exitosas del continente, presentó al puerto de Manzanillo como un socio estratégico de la industria de las mudanzas frente a desafíos comunes a ambos sectores, como el Blockchain (la actual discrepancia por el intercambio de códigos en la industria naviera), la emergencia de Amazon y Alibaba como probables competencias de la industria del transporte; los ataques cibernéticos, y las consolidaciones en el mundo naviero, hecho que resultará en el incremento de tarifas que bien podrían ser trasladadas al cliente final.

De igual manera, Urriola instó a los miembros de LACMA a tomar nota de las políticas implementadas por la Organización Marítima Internacional en cuanto a la reducción de la contaminación con azufre emitida por las naves, y que entrarán en efecto en el año 2020.

Antes de la acostumbrada sesión de preguntas y respuestas, Urriola concluyó su disertación con una serie de recomendaciones, entre las cuales figuran el abordar los cambios culturales de los clientes de la industria (el caso de los millennials, quienes se enfocan en experiencias y no en la adquisición de bienes); aprovechar las ventajas que resulten a consecuencia del “Brexit”, hacer los ajustes tarifarios pertinentes a los cambios corporativos que se avecinan en el mundo naviero, y apostar a la innovación tecnológica para mantenerse competitivos.

LACMA would not be what it is today if it weren’t for its associate membership (actually, the largest group in terms of numbers), which comprises moving and relocation companies from regions other than Latin America and the Caribbean.

As usual, the group held its annual meeting during this year’s convention, where topics pertaining to their growing participation in LACMA’s policies and agendas were addressed.

The meeting was led by the group’s representative at the Board of Directors, Associate Director Lucrecia Sikora, who was re-elected as Associate Director for the 2019-2021 Board.

ne of the last activities scheduled for Monday, February 18 was the LACMA Ladies’ meeting, a group of female executives and professionals who contribute to charity causes in each LACMA convention host city.

na de las últimas actividades programadas para el lunes 18 de febrero fue la reunión de “LACMA Ladies”, grupo de damas ejecutivas y profesionales que contribuye con causas caritativas en cada ciudad sede de las convenciones LACMA.

This year, the ladies (a total of 19) met with representatives of Panama City’s “Hermanas Mercedarias de la Caridad” Roman Catholic community, who manage “La Casa del Estudiante”, a home for young girls and adolescents. Among them, were a number of professional women who had been raised at La Casa del Estudiante, and who shared their stories of success with the audience.

Este año, las damas (19 en total) se reunieron con representantes de la Comunidad Hermanas Mercedarias de la Caridad de ciudad de Panamá, quienes gestionan “La Casa del Estudiante”, un hogar para niñas y adolescentes.

n Tuesday, February 19, LACMA members enjoyed a unique experience during their Day Trip: an hour-long train ride, from coast to coast, across the American continent. The experience, which took place aboard the passenger train of the Panama Canal Railway Company, allowed the members to enjoy excellent vistas of the verdant forests surrounding the world-famous waterway on their way to Colón, on the Caribbean side of Panama.

Once in Colón, the group was transported by bus to the Visitors’ Center of the Agua Clara Locks of the expanded Panama Canal, after which they enjoyed a buffet-style lunch at Restaurante Gatún. The group returned to Panama City by bus in the late afternoon.

he ruins of La Merced Convent –a 16th-century monument located at the Old Panama historical compound—was the site chosen for LACMA’s 50th Anniversary Dinner, which took place the evening of Tuesday, February 19.

A red carpet flanked by ladies wearing Polleras –Panama’s national dress—was rolled out to welcome the members to the event, which featured folklore dance performances and a live orchestra by the Danilo Pérez Foundation. A full moon shone brightly that evening, adding a touch of romanticism and magic to the event.

Una alfombra roja, bordeada de damas vestidas de pollera –el traje nacional de Panamá—, dio la bienvenida a los miembros al evento, que incluyó presentaciones de danza folklórica y una orquesta en vivo de la Fundación Danilo Pérez. A number of the association’s founding members, Past Presidents, and former Associate Directors were honored with special acknowledgements that evening, which also included the presentation of a commemorative video and a book especially edited for the occasion.

his year’s golf tournament turned out to be a ‘piece of cake’ with regards to getting to the field (all the activity took place at the hotel’s golf course), but it surely wasn’t that easy when the time came for the actual playing.

The game took place from 1:00-6:00p.m. on Wednesday February 20. As usual, its winners were announced during the Closing Dinner, later that evening.

There was certainly no better way to celebrate LACMA’s 50th anniversary than in its own headquarters! Likewise, our party on a Roof Top at Casco Viejo was a huge success, crowned with a wonderful view of Panama City and bay.

With regards to LACMAS.O.S., I wish to share with you that we were able to raise $50,000 to continue supporting good causes. I would surely appreciate if you would contact any of us in case you know of anyone who needs our help.

Pertaining to TECHO, I also want to highlight we were able to finish the construction of 4 houses in two days, this year, with the support of 42 participants (we hope to be even more in Paraguay).

Likewise, it is important to acknowledge the participation of an excellent facilitator, Mr. Mel Campbell, who helped us enjoy a pleasant time with his ideals and advice. I invite you to consider what we’ve learned and even more importantly, to apply it to our daily activities.

I would like to take this opportunity to highlight that LACMANext’s Board is already working on new ideas. Any contribution, request, concern, or comment you may wish to express will be welcomed.

Además, deseo agradecer muchísimo a Panamá. ¡Qué mejor forma de celebrar los 50 años de LACMA que en casa! Los anfitriones fueron excelentes y no cabe duda de que los eventos de LACMANext cumplieron las expectativas. Además, nuestra fiesta en un “Roof Top” del Casco Viejo fue todo un éxito, coronada con una vista maravillosa de la ciudad y la bahía de Panamá.

arly in the morning of Friday, February 15, two days prior to the formal opening of LACMA’s convention in Panama, a group of 43 volunteers left the Double Tree by Hilton hotel to engage in this year’s construction project with TECHO. Their mission: provide housing for four families of Arraiján, in the Panamá Oeste province, located approximately 15 minutes outside Panama City.

The group spent two days braving the broiling sun of Panama’s dry season to see their mission accomplished –a total of 24 hours or hard work.

For several years in a row, LACMANext, the group of the association’s youngest members, has partnered with Chile-based TECHO, a Chile-based non-profit organization, to build houses for underprivileged families at each LACMA convention host country.

emprano por la mañana del viernes, 15 de febrero, dos días antes de la apertura formal de la convención de LACMA en Panamá, un grupo de 43 voluntarios partió del hotel Double Tree by Hilton para participar en el proyecto de construcción de este año con TECHO. Su misión: construir viviendas para cuatro familias de Arraiján, en la provincia de Panamá Oeste, situada a 15 minutos de ciudad de Panamá.

El grupo desafió el ardiente sol de la temporada seca de Panamá para ver su misión cumplida –un total de 24 horas de arduo trabajo.

Durante varios años seguidos, LACMANext, el grupo de los miembros más jóvenes de la asociación, se ha asociado a TECHO, organización sin fines de lucro con sede en Chile, para construir hogares para familias de escasos recursos de cada país anfitrión de las convenciones de LACMA.

Business Psychology: The art of communication in the 21st Century

ucceeding in business nowadays takes a lot more than graduating with an MBA or even acquiring commercial acumen over the years, much to the contrary of what most businesspeople believed in until a couple of decades ago, when the business experience was mainly centered on the speed with which transactions took place.

The 21st century is now in full swing, and with it, a new ingredient has been introduced into the equation for financial success: Business Psychology, a topic that was masterfully addressed

by US motivational psychologist, Dr. Mel Campbell, during LACMANext’s Workshop at LACMA’s convention in Panama, on Monday, February 18.

The main purpose of Dr. Campbell’s speech was to help the audience “...learn the personality of others, culture communication techniques and seeing the point of perception of the people we deal with on a daily basis.” Business Psychology, according to Campbell, “is about using, understanding, and connecting via emotional intelligence.”

ener éxito en los negocios hoy en día involucra mucho más que graduarse con un MBA o, incluso, de adquirir destrezas comerciales a través de los años, a diferencia de lo que la mayoría de empresarios creía hasta hace un par de décadas, cuando la experiencia de negocios se concentraba, primordialmente, en la rapidez con la que se realizaban las transacciones.

El s. XXI está en plena marcha, y con él, un nuevo ingrediente ha sido introducido en la ecuación para el éxito financiero: la psicología de negocios, tema que fue magistralmente abordado por el psicólogo motivacional estadounidense, Dr. Mel Campbell, durante el Taller de LACMANext de la convención de LACMA en Panamá, el lunes 18 de febrero.

ne of the most eagerly awaited events at each LACMA convention is the LACMANext Party, which allows members of all ages to relax after the formalities of the first session of the General Assembly.

This year, the event took place on the rooftop of Tántalo, a prime entertainment venue of Panama City’s Old Quarter, which allowed visitors to enjoy superb views of the skyscrapers that border the Bay of Panama at the rhythm of popular tropical music hits.

I am happy to share a picture of the «Grande Group» that was founded during the 2009 LACMA convention in Trinidad. It’s a group of industry colleagues, very good friends, that typically organizes an after-trip after every convention to share good times with fantastic people.

Haven’t it been for LACMA, this group would not exist, and we wouldn’t be the friends we are today! We, therefore, believe that this memory should be shared. What started in 2009, as a group of 6 people, has grown today to a group of 13.

The picture was taken at LACMA Next's costume party in Chile, where the Grande Group dressed up as pirates.

Thank you for all your effort in making each LACMA convention better than the past one……and thank you for giving me the opportunity of having met such great people from all over the world and having created a huge family during all these years!

Half a century ago, in 1968, we, a group of owners of the most important moving companies of Latin America, made the decision to join forces to protect each other from a possible invasion of large American companies in our territory.

The birth was very difficult. We convened the first meeting in Lima, Peru, which was followed by a second meeting in Mexico City –the rendezvous in which we formalized our first Board of Directors. It was only with the dedication and great effort of all of our directors that it was possible to take the first steps toward the formation of this great association that gathers us today to celebrate 5 decades of uninterrupted work.

We created bylaws that outlined the way in which we desired to develop and, starting from that point, we summoned and invited more colleagues, both male, and female, to participate and join the LACMA association, where Latin American companies are active members and those from outside the area are considered associate members.

Hace medio siglo, en 1968, un grupo de dueños de las empresas de mudanzas más importantes de Latinoamérica tomamos la decisión de asociarnos con el fin de protegernos de la posible invasión de grandes compañías estadounidenses en nuestro territorio.

El nacimiento fue muy duro. Convocamos una primera reunión en Lima, Perú; luego una segunda reunión en la Ciudad de México, encuentro en el cual formalizamos la primera Junta Directiva.

Sólo con la dedicación y el gran esfuerzo de todos los directores, fue posible dar los primeros pasos para la formación de esta gran asociación que hoy nos reúne para celebrar 5 décadas de trabajo ininterrumpido.

Creamos los estatutos, los cuales delinearon la manera en la que deseábamos desarrollarnos y a partir de ahí, convocamos e invitamos a más compañeros y compañeras a participar y sumarse a la asociación LACMA, donde las empresas latinoamericanas somos socias activas y las de afuera del área, asociadas.

We chose Panama City as LACMA’s headquarters due to its geographic position and strengthened the first workgroup by designating a permanent Secretary and a staff of collaborators dedicated to communicating and developing links with the rest of the international moving industry associations. We became part of FIDI and therefore obtained the FIDI LATIN AMERICA distinction.

As years passed, five decades already, LACMA has strengthened itself in such a way that today it is recognized as one of the best associations of the industry, a fact of which we, the founding members, feel extremely proud.

Elegimos la ciudad de Panamá como sede de LACMA debido a su ubicación geográfica. Consolidamos el primer grupo de trabajo designando a su secretario permanente y un staff de colaboradores dedicados a comunicar y desarrollar enlaces con el resto de las asociaciones de la industria de las mudanzas internacionales. Nos asociamos a FIDI y obtuvimos, de esta manera, el reconocimiento de FIDI LATINOAMÉRICA. Con el paso de los años, ya 5 décadas, LACMA se ha fortalecido de tal manera que hoy en día es reconocida como una de las mejores asociaciones de la industria, hecho del que nosotros, los miembros fundadores, nos sentimos sumamente orgullosos.

LACMA is a great family. Not only do we take charge of duties that are specifically related to the industry, such as training programs and various courses, but we also seek, as part of our mission and objectives, to collaborate with our people and their families, a fact that has motivated us to develop scholarship programs and a variety of training programs to keep us ahead of the curve.

No solo nos ocupamos de las tareas específicamente relacionadas con la industria, como capacitaciones y cursos varios, sino que también buscamos, en nuestra misión y objetivos, poder colaborar con nuestra gente y sus familias, hecho que nos ha motivado a desarrollar programas de becas y variadas capacitaciones para mantenernos a la vanguardia.

As a community, we have faced and provided support in the midst of the natural disasters some of our member countries have had to endure, thus strengthening the spirit of family and assistance in the most difficult times.

En varias oportunidades hemos afrontado y colaborado económicamente, como comunidad, ante diversas tragedias naturales que les ha tocado vivir a algunos de nuestros países miembros, reforzando el espíritu de familia y de tender una mano durante los momentos más difíciles.

Undoubtedly, it is under the coordination of the Board of Directors and the execution of the management team that LACMA generates and promotes great benefits for its members.

Once upon a time... back when I was president ERASE UNA VEZ...CUANDO FUI PRESIDENTE

It was the first time a LACMA convention was held aboard a cruise ship on the Caribbean. The seas were quiet that night, and the vessel placidly plied under the moonlight, creating a romantic ambiance and mischievous complicity. Inside the ship, there were groups of people who joyfully celebrated with song and dance. On the corner of a bar, a group of men with serious expressions on their faces, seemed to be worried and aloft of the party as they feverishly and decisively engaged in a discussion. The topic? The future of LACMA. The following day, I was UNANIMOUSLY elected President of LACMA along with a group of Directors. Back then, I represented the company, Metropolitan Expreso of Ecuador and had the honor of presiding over the first group of Directors of the new generation, of the young people who took over the reins of an organization that had intensely fought to occupy a place of prominence in the world of international moving.

We had reached that point with all the energy of youth, with great dreams, lots of ideas, and filled with the desire to work and to innovate. We wanted to debunk the status quo to make LACMA an organization for all of us. We did not feel bound by the resentments and barriers that had built up in previous years, and would strive for unity and the incorporation of all professionally qualified companies that were interested in joining LACMA. We wanted to energize our international presence. Here are a couple of examples: We were able to participate as keynote speakers in the following annual meeting of the HHGGF Association of America.

We were the first to organize a LACMA cocktail during a FIDI convention to establish a closer contact with the most important representatives of the industry. That took place in Rome, Italy.

In addition, we shared our enthusiasm and joy with the entire LACMA family through our meetings and conventions in order to create an opportunity to exchange friendship, a spirit of celebration, and the sharing of valuable time among each other in addition to the formality and seriousness of our association’s activities.

Era la primera vez que se hacía una Convención de LACMA en un crucero por el Caribe. Esa noche el mar estaba tranquilo y el barco se desplazaba placido bajo la luz de la luna, creando un ambiente de romanticismo y de pícara complicidad. En el interior del crucero estaban los grupos que alegremente festejaban y cantaban y bailaban. En una esquina del bar, había un grupo de hombres con los rostros serios, preocupados, ajenos a los festejos y discutían con pasión, con convicción. ¿El tema? El futuro de LACMA. Al día siguiente fui elegido presidente de LACMA junto a un grupo de directores, por UNANIMIDAD. Representaba en ese momento a Metropolitan Expreso, de Ecuador. Tuve el honor de presidir el primer grupo de directores de la nueva generación, de jóvenes que tomaban el mando de una organización que había luchado intensamente para ocupar un lugar de prestigio en el mundo de las mudanzas internacionales.

Llegamos con toda la energía de la juventud, con grandes sueños, muchas ideas, muchas ganas de trabajar y de innovar.

Queríamos romper esquemas para hacer de LACMA una organización para todos. No nos sentiríamos atados por los resquemores y barreras que se habían ido creando en los años anteriores y buscaríamos la unión y la incorporación de todas las empresas que, estando profesionalmente calificadas, estaban interesadas en ingresar a LACMA. Queríamos dinamizar nuestra presencia internacional. Un par de ejemplos: Conseguí participar como conferencistas en la siguiente reunión anual de HHGGF Asociation of America. Fuimos los primeros en organizar un cocktail de Lacma durante una convención de FIDI, para tener un contacto mas cercano con los representantes mas importantes de la industria, eso fue en Roma, Italia.

Además, compartiríamos nuestro entusiasmo y alegría a toda la familia LACMA a través de nuestras reuniones y convenciones, para que adicionalmente a la parte seria y formal, tengamos una oportunidad de intercambio de amistad, de festividad y de compartir tiempo valioso entre IT WAS ALL ABOUT TEAM WORK! On behalf of each of those who todos. served on the various Boards during the two years I was president, I hereby thank you for allowing us to serve, work, and be a part of LACMA’s history.

50 years of human kindness and hard work 50 AÑOS DE CALIDEZ HUMANA Y ARDUO TRABAJO

By Juan Guillermo Diaz Intramar Shipping Colombia Compelling stories, genuine laughter, widespread friendliness, a sense of belonging and, above all, human warmth, are just some of the numerous experiences I can evoke to describe what my first LACMA convention meant to me. Visiting new places and knowing new people has always been a challenge that spurs and stirs up my excitement, raising my expectations.

In this opportunity, I can assert without hesitation, that reality not only lived up to my expectations, but that it even exceeded them. As far as I am concerned, this convention brought about new friendships and relationships, whose foundation is built with trust, an unrelenting passion for our business, and a sincere desire to leverage the full potential of our region.

The underlying basis of an organization is what determines its direction; in this case, perseverance and tenacity are two values which, in my opinion, are faithfully represented by the great celebration of the 50th anniversary of LACMA. During the convention, I was fortunate enough to have the pleasure to meet several of the founding members, and to enjoy a thrilling train ride and a fantastic dinner, where the whole association dressed up to honor its presidents and members.

LACMA has an element that I consider unique in our industry: it is primarily a meeting of friends where passion and ambition meet warmth and closeness, in the creation of novel and larger businesses. But, with the TECHO initiative, it is also a display of compassion and acknowledgement of the Latin American people, as well as a source of inspiration and teamwork: there was not a single moment in which I could not hear laughter or see an act of kindness. I am very glad and grateful to be able to join this family.

I want to take advantage of this communication to heartily congratulate all the LACMA leaders and members who have been part of the association from its inception until today.

Thank you for dreaming together, for looking beyond your individual interests and for working hard for the growth and presence of our industry and our region worldwide. I wish the whole organization many more years of continuity.

Finally, I especially want to pay tribute to Mark and his beloved ones. May God guide your way into eternity and give strength to your family. You will be missed so much!

Las historias, las risas, la camaradería, el sentido de pertenencia y sobretodo la calidez humana son elementos variados, pero justos, para describir lo que significó mi primer LACMA, como muchos lo llamamos. Asistir a nuevos lugares representa un reto que va, desde las expectativas y la ansiedad, hasta la realidad. Para mí, esta convención terminó siendo un encuentro donde la realidad superó las expectativas, dejando, como resultado, la base de nuevas amistades, relaciones de confianza y una pasión absoluta hacia el potencial de nuestra región y nuestro trabajo.

Los cimientos de toda organización determinan el rumbo de la misma, y entender el esfuerzo y la satisfacción del deber cumplido es una muestra de perseverancia y fuerza, dos valores que, en mi concepto, enmarcan la gran celebración de los 50 años de LACMA. Tuve la fortuna de conocer a varios miembros fundadores, de disfrutar de un viaje en tren y una fantástica cena de celebración donde la asociación se vistió de gala para homenajear a sus presidentes y miembros.

LACMA tiene un elemento que, considero hasta el momento, único en nuestra industria; es una reunión de amigos donde se unen la pasión, la calidez y la cercanía en la creación de nuevos y más grandes negocios. La iniciativa de TECHO, es una muestra de humildad y reconocimiento al pueblo latinoamericano, así como una fuente de inspiración y trabajo en equipo. No hubo un solo momento en el que yo no escuchara una risa o viera una cara de amabilidad.

Es realmente una fiesta en familia, una familia de la que espero ser parte muy rápidamente y que, con certeza, me dará amigos para toda la vida.

Quiero aprovechar este comunicado para felicitar a todos los líderes y miembros de LACMA, desde su inicio hasta hoy. Gracias por soñar en conjunto; por ver más allá de sus intereses individuales, y por trabajar arduamente en el crecimiento de nuestra región y su presencia en el mundo.

Gracias por conservar un estilo de trabajo humano y lleno de generosidad. Le deseo a toda la organización muchos más años continuidad.

My First LACMA Convention MI PRIMERA CONVENCION LACMA

We have all had a first time, and its memory illuminates us for the rest of our lives. Each of us could tell our adventure, which, sure as well as unrepeatable, would be endearing and full of teaching.

I believe that the LACMA Convention is an experience that is lived annually, in a very special way within our industry, and for all of us who come from Europe, it also has all that Latin flavor that we love and without which, this work would not be understood.

Do not forget that because of dates, always after long winters, enjoying an enviable climate in paradisiacal environments, while working, and often, with your family, is something unique and exclusive to us. If there were no LACMA, it would have to be invented.

Well, I was an inexperienced young man, who had accidentally come to this convention, replacing another person. Also, I was new to the industry. The combination of not having friends, nor a relationship with agents from other countries, made the perfect cocktail to be the wrong person, in the wrong place.

I remember it was Santo Domingo. The joy of its people and the charm of its moors, made me feel especially misplaced. I expected a lot of serious people, handling thousands of tons of shipments and being aggressive in the negotiation. I had heard about a massive presentation on the first day, and my hands, my voice and my legs were almost shaking when they gave me the microphone.

But everything changed, as things usually happen in LACMA. Suddenly on the bus to the hotel, a very experienced, but fatherly and affable gentleman told me: who are you? What is your name? Where do you come from? ... Much later he asked me about my company, my business and a thousand other things. Then, at dinner, I learned that this gentleman had been president of LACMA, but also of FIDI and many other things.

It was indeed Jorge Laporta. An honest and generous type, always more concerned with people, than with business; but no less successful in the latter. He told me about the industry and those who were on the bus with us.

It was the beginning of a friendship with many others, which has been gaining every day not only in shipments and favors, but also in friends and memories.

So much so, that in recent years I have refused to go because I miss my great friends with whom I met so many times in this convention. With Otero, with Guillermo or with Eduardo.

Todos hemos tenido una primera vez, y su recuerdo nos ilumina para el resto de nuestras vidas. Cada uno de nosotros podría contar nuestra aventura, que, seguro que además de irrepetible, sería entrañable y llena de enseñanza.

Creo que la convención de LACMA es una experiencia que se vive anualmente, de forma muy especial dentro de nuestra industria, y que para todos los que venimos de Europa, tiene además todo ese sabor latino que nos encanta y sin el que no se entendería este trabajo. No olvidemos que por fechas, siempre después de largos inviernos, disfrutar de un clima envidiable en entornos paradisiacos, mientras trabajas, y muchas veces, en familia, es algo único y exclusivo nuestro.

Si no existiera LACMA, habría que inventarlo.

Pues bien, era yo un joven inexperto, que por accidente le había tocado acudir a este encuentro, en reemplazo de otra persona. Además yo era nuevo en la industria. La combinación de no tener amigos, ni relación con agentes de otros países, hacían el coctel perfecto para ser la persona equivocada, en el lugar erróneo.

Recuerdo que era Santo Domingo. La alegría de sus gentes y el encanto de sus páramos, hacían que me sintiera especialmente desubicado. Yo esperaba un montón de gente seria, manejando miles de toneladas de embarques y siendo agresivos en la negociación. Me habían hablado de una presentación multitudinaria el primer día, y casi me temblaban las manos,la voz y las piernas cuando me dieron el micrófono.

Pero todo cambió, como suelen ocurrir las cosas en LACMA. De pronto en el autobús camino al hotel, un señor bien experimentado, pero paternal y afable me dijo: ¿tu quién eres? ¿Cómo te llamas? ¿De dónde vienes?... mucho después me preguntó por mi empresa, mi negocio y mil cosas más. Luego, en la cena, me enteré de que ese señor tan amable había sido presidente de LACMA, pero también de FIDI y muchas cosas más. Efectivamente era Jorge Laporta.

Un tipo íntegro y generoso, más preocupado siempre de las personas, que de los negocios; pero no por eso menos exitoso en estos últimos. El me habló de la industria y de los que iban en el autobús junto a nosotros.

Era el principio de una amistad con muchos otros, que ha ido ganando cada día no sólo en embarques y favores, si no que también en amigos y recuerdos.

Tan es así, que los últimos años me he negado a ir por que echo de menos a mis grandes amigos con los que coincidí tantas veces en esta convención. Con Otero, con Guillermo o con Eduardo.

Of polar conventions and other unusual experiences work DE CONVENCIONES POLARES Y OTRAS EXPERIENCIAS POCO COMUNES

By Luis Silva Unipack Chile The truth is there are a lot of things that happen during the 10 years one serves on the Board of Directors as we share good moments with friends and companions, but there are two memories I remember which took place during my term as President.

La verdad es que son muchas las cosa que pasan durante los 10 años que uno pasa en la Junta compartiendo con buenos amigos y compañeros, pero hay dos que recuerdo y que ocurrieron cuando fui Presidente de la Junta.

The first occurred during the convention in The Bahamas. For some reason unknown to me, a place that usually enjoys the most gorgeous weather was invaded by a wave of cold, polar air, which forced us to purchase warm clothes once we arrived.

Coincidentally, one of the most powerful earthquakes on record to hit Chile took place during those days, precisely on March 10, although, thank God, it resulted in a very low number of casualties.

La primera fue durante la convención en Bahamas. Por alguna razón que desconozco, un lugar de clima maravilloso se vio invadido por una onda de frio polar y tuvimos todos que salir a comprar ropa de abrigo y además que, en esos días, el 10 de marzo se produjo uno de los terremotos más fuertes en la historia de Chile, lo que, gracias a Dios, ocasionó muy pocas víctimas.

The second memory was precisely at the end of my presidency, at the convention that took place in Santiago, Chile, when I became ill with Pharyngitis, which rendered me incapable of reading my farewell address. Despite this difficulty, my most important memory of the convention was the honor I had to hand over the presidency to a woman, Laura Ganon, for the first time in LACMA’s history.

La segunda, fue precisamente al finalizar mi presidencia en la convención en Santiago de Chile, cuando me vi afectado por una faringitis y no pude leer mi discurso de despedida, pero lo más importante fue que, por primera vez en la historia de LACMA, tuve el honor de traspasarle la presidencia a una mujer, a Laura Ganon.

LACMA has always been in my heart for many reasons. First of all, my father, Paul Richard Klien, was one of the founders of LACMA and I am very proud of what it has become over these last 50 years.

LACMA siempre ha estado en mi corazón por muchas razones. Primero, mi padre, Paul Richard Klien, fue uno de los fundadores de LACMA, y estoy muy orgulloso por lo que se ha convertido la asociación en estos últimos 50 años.

A little seed that has grown and developed and that now offers so many great and important services to its members, making Latin America and the Caribbean stronger together.

I also had the honor to be part of the LACMA board for some years and, as a Past President, I can only congratulate those that came after me and turned LACMA into what it is today.

May other 50 years come and continue to see the ongoing growth of LACMA!

Una pequeña semilla que ha crecido y desarrollado, y que ahora ofrece tantos servicios tan grandes e importantes a sus miembros, y que hace que Latinoamérica y el Caribe se fortalezcan juntos.

Memories of Punta del Este RECUERDOS DE PUNTA DEL ESTE

Mi primera convención fue en Punta del Este, Uruguay. ¡Y vaya, qué inicio tuvo!

My first convention was in Punta del Este, Uruguay. And what a start that was!

The experience exceeded my expectations tenfold. Thirty minutes after my arrival at the Conrad Hotel, I found myself on a small bus on the way to the URUVAN party. Wow, what a great party it turned out to be, in addition to being an amazing setting to reconnect with friends! The food and dancing got me right into the LACMA spirit.

It was obvious that LACMA wasn’t going to be like any other conference I have ever been to; the day trips, the evening events, the lectures…. especially the one by Nando Parrado, one of the survivors from the 1972 plane crash in the Andes on which the movie, “Alive” is based. This lecture had a huge impact on me and from what I heard, on others as well.

Overall, it was a fantastic experience and it has been pretty much the same in every LACMA conference I’ve attended ever since.

La experiencia superó mis expectativas diez veces.

Treinta minutos después de mi llegada al Hotel Conrad, me encontré en un pequeño autobús rumbo a la fiesta de URUVAN. ¡Wow, y qué gran fiesta resultó ser, además de un sorprendente ambiente para reconectarme con amigos!

La comida y el baile me inyectaron, de inmediato, del espíritu de LACMA. Es obvio que LACMA no sería como las otras convenciones a las que había asistido; los días de paseo, los eventos nocturnos, las ponencias... especialmente la que ofreció Nando Parrado, uno de los sobrevivientes del accidente de los Andes de 1972, en el que está basado la película, “¡Viven!”. Esta ponencia tuvo un gran impacto en mí y, según he escuchado, en otros también.

En general, fue una experiencia fantástica, y básicamente ha sido igual en cada convención LACMA a la que he asistido desde entonces.

But I think what I remember the most, was when in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, there was a costume event; I was dressed as a Cordobés and danced flamenco with Estrella Diaz from SIT and we won first prize. Which I will never repeat ... I was so ashamed hahaha!

Mi primera convención LACMA fue en ARUBA, ¡qué maravilla de isla!. Pero creo que lo que más recuerdo fue, cuando en Santa Cruz, Bolivia, hubo un evento de disfraces; yo fui vestido de Cordobés y bailé flamenco con Estrella Diaz de SIT y ganamos primer premio. Cosa que jamas voy a repetir...¡estaba demasiado avergonzado, jajaja!

El comienzo de la asociación LACMA fue presidido por un gran empresario, como lo fue Paul Richard Klein (Transportes Fink, Brasil) y sus sucesores; verdaderos emprendedores en el mundo de las mudanzas y la logística de su época.

The market economies of Latin America did not stop growing back in those years and, therefore, large corporations opened shop in our region. Today, said companies continue to hold strong in a growing market, migrating to various areas, according to their convenience.

Las economías del mercado latinoamericano no dejaban de crecer en esos años y, por consiguiente, las grandes corporaciones se instalaron en nuestra región. Hoy siguen muy firmes con un mercado en crecimiento, emigrando a las distintas zonas, según sus conveniencias.

It was so that the great “Van Lines” started operations in our area and, likewise, so did the union of the aforementioned entrepreneurs, in order to protect their respective markets, created LACMA in 1969.

My commercial career started prior to LACMA by the hand of one of its founders, Omar Trombotti, who first started activities in Uruguay with AERO EXPRESO URUGUAYO; continuing afterward with IESA ARGENTINA, IESA BOLIVIA, IESA BRAZIL, and IESA PARAGUAY, in its beginnings with Juan Carlos Bacigalupi, in Asunción. Trombotti was, definitely, a great businessman and a person of vision; my great teacher.

LACMA’s development was slow. As I witnessed the creation of strong a leadership, I learned to grow fond of its members and to see the great discussions at the Assemblies which, in many cases, became violent and lasted for days on end. My first convention was held in Costa Rica in the year 1977, being a friendly businessman by the name of Roberto Beeche Soler the association’s president at that moment.

My life had changed, from studying law to getting involved in marketing and business administration, a new field back then which, today, has become a university field of great demand. In the year 1974-75 I was relocated to work in the sales department of IESA – Buenos Aires alongside Jorge Laporta, with whom I shared many moments of work and friendship.

Jorge and I had previously worked in Montevideo at the sales department of Aero Expreso Uruguayo where, on many occasions, we would ride together on his Vespa motorcycle to visit clients. Yes! Jorge and I on a Vespa scooter! As with everything in life, we built our own futures, step by step.

As years passed, due to various circumstances, Jorge Laporta and I took different paths, always keeping faithful to our dreams: to establish our own companies. We had come from expanding and building the careers that gave us the opportunity to learn about the moving world and develop markets.

Así surgió que las grandes “Van Lines” comenzaban a instalarse en nuestra zona. De igual manera, fue así que la unión de esos emprendedores, para proteger sus respectivos mercados, crea nuestra LACMA, en 1969.

Mi vida comercial nació antes que LACMA, de la mano de uno de sus fundadores, OMAR TROMBOTTI, quien inició sus actividades, primero, en Uruguay, con AERO EXPRESO URUGUAYO; luego, con IESA ARGENTINA, IESA BOLIVIA, IESA BRASIL e IESA PARAGUAY, en un comienzo con Juan Carlos Bacigalupi en Asunción. Trombotti fue, en definitiva, un gran empresario y visionario; mi gran maestro.

El desarrollo de LACMA, fue lento. Mientras observaba la creación de liderazgos fuertes, aprendí a querer sus miembros, y ver las enormes discusiones en las Asambleas que, en muchos casos, fueron violentas y duraban días enteros. Mi primer congreso fue en Costa Rica en el año 1977, siendo el presidente de la asociación, en ese momento, un empresario bonachón llamado Roberto Beeche Soler.

Mi vida cambió, de estudiar abogacía, a involucrarme en marketing y administración de empresas, algo novedoso para el momento; hoy, una carrera universitaria de gran demanda.

En el año 1974-75 me trasladaron a trabajar en IESA - Buenos Aires en el departamento de ventas junto con Jorge Laporta, con quien compartí muchos momentos de trabajo y amistad.

Previamente con Jorge, trabajamos en Montevideo en Aero Expreso Uruguayo en el departamento de ventas, donde, en algunas oportunidades, compartíamos su moto Vespa para visitar clientes. ¡Sí! ¡En moto Vespa, Jorge y Mario! Como todo en la vida, fuimos construyendo nuestros futuros, peldaño por peldaño.

Con los años, por distintas circunstancias, Jorge Laporta y yo tomamos caminos distintos, pero siempre apegados a nuestros sueños: los de formar nuestras propias empresas.

Veníamos de hacer crecer y construir aquellas que nos dieron las oportunidades de conocer el mundo de las mudanzas y desarrollar mercados.

In my case, I was relocated to IESA Brazil, where I would not work for very long for having small children, thus prompting me to take other paths, and here I am! Jorge was able to take on responsibilities in Brazil, and his story is now a very rich one. Perhaps, one of these days we will be able to write a large book on our careers.

The desire of LACMA’s leadership to protect their own businesses contributed to the closure of many companies in the region that wanted to join the association and worked in a correct ethical, and professional manner, complying with all the quality standards and requirements of the Bylaws.

Both Jorge Laporta, who back then was the Managing Director/ Owner of World Shipping and me, the Managing Director/Owner of URUVAN, had scheduled a meeting with LACMA’s Board of Directors in Puerto Rico. We traveled and stayed at a hotel other than the one chosen by the General Assembly. In that meeting, we delivered the sponsorships of 60% of the membership of LACMA, in order to be allowed to join the association after a number of years waiting to be accepted.

And oh, what a surprise! We were received by one of the Directors who informed us that LACMA’s Board was involved in too much work and could not meet with us.

This is the most frustrating anecdote I can recall, and I believe it’s the same for my friend, Jorge Laporta, as they made us travel, confirmed the meeting and, just as we arrived, we were forced to leave.

Can you imagine the frustration and arrogance we had to endure?

Fortunately, the directors of most organizations eventually go, leaving said institutions to continue. As time passed, both URUVAN TRANSPORT and WORLD SHIPPING were allowed to join LACMA. Years later, Jorge Laporta became a member of FIDI’s Board and managed to reach the presidency of the federation with an excellent performance. In my case, I joined LACMA’s Board where I would become president years later.

I am pretty sure Jorge Laporta is happy today, looking back at those unfortunate moments we lived through, and seeing his commercial career reaching its climax with his son, Sebastián –who has just concluded his term as president of LACMA—following his footsteps with lots of character and professionalism!

It is perseverance and clear objectives what allows us as human beings to reach our goals. There will always be obstacles on the road ahead; what’s important is constancy and self-confidence in order to reach the goal.

We can definitely be happy for having a neat, correct, and democratic association, and for forgetting the bad actions of a leadership that acted through cronyism and hand-picking –something that is now recounted as an anecdote, but which has allowed for us today, in LACMA, to enjoy times of wisdom and maturity, the byproduct of an updated leadership and with a spirit of concord and good faith!

CONGRATULATIONS, LACMA, FOR MANY, MANY YEARS! THE BEST IS YET TO COME!

En mi caso, me trasladan a IESA Brasil, en donde no pude trabajar por mucho tiempo por tener niños pequeños, por lo que tomé otros caminos y ¡aquí estoy! Jorge sí tomó responsabilidades en Brasil y su historia es ahora muy rica. Tal vez, en algún momento, podremos hacer un libro gordo sobre nuestras carreras.

El deseo de los dirigentes de LACMA de proteger sus propios negocios contribuyó a que cerrasen muchas empresas de la región que querían integrarse a la asociación, y que trabajaban en forma correcta, ética y profesional, cumpliendo con todo el estándar de calidad y todos los requisitos de los estatutos.

Tanto Jorge Laporta, en ese momento director propietario de World Shipping, como en mi caso, Director Propietario de URUVAN, concretamos una reunión con la Junta Directiva de LACMA en Puerto Rico. Viajamos y nos hospedamos en otro hotel para no coincidir con el lugar de la Asamblea General, y entregaríamos, en esa reunión, los auspicios del 60% de la membresía de los miembros de LACMA para que se nos permitiera el ingreso a la asociación, luego de años esperando que nos aceptaran. ¡Oh, sorpresa! Uno de los directivos nos recibió y nos comunicó que la Junta de LACMA tenía mucho trabajo y que no nos podían recibir.

Esta es la anécdota más frustrante que tengo y creo también de mi amigo, Jorge Laporta, pues nos hicieron viajar, nos confirmaron la reunión y, así como llegamos, nos vimos forzados a regresar. ¿Se imaginan la frustración y la arrogancia que debimos sufrir?

Por fortuna, los directivos de las distintas organizaciones se van y las Instituciones quedan. Con el pasar del tiempo, ingresamos a LACMA, URUVAN TRANSPORT y WORLD SHIPPING, con el apoyo de la membresía.

Años más tarde, Jorge Laporta ingresó al Directorio de FIDI y llegó al cargo de presidente de la federación con una excelente actuación y, en mi caso, ingresé al Directorio de LACMA donde me distinguieron con la presidencia, años más tarde. ¡Qué felicidad debe tener hoy Jorge Laporta, mirando atrás aquellos momentos de infortunio que vivimos, y ver consolidada su vida comercial con su hijo Sebastián –quien acaba de concluir su presidencia en LACMA—siguiendo sus pasos con mucho carácter y profesionalismo!

La perseverancia y los objetivos claros del ser humano son los que permiten llegar a sus metas. El camino siempre tiene obstáculos; lo importante es la constancia y la seguridad de uno mismo para llegar a la meta. ¡Qué felices nos podemos sentir de tener una asociación prolija, correcta, y democrática, y olvidar las malas acciones de una dirigencia que funcionaba con el amiguismo y de a dedo – algo que ha quedado en el anecdotario, pero que sí ha permitido que hoy, en LACMA, se pueda percibir vientos de cordura y madurez, producto de una dirigencia actualizada y con espíritu de concordia y buena fe! ¡FELICIDADES, LACMA Y POR MUCHOS, MUCHOS AÑOS! ¡LO MEJOR ESTA POR VENIR!

There was a boy in 1966 who, at the age of ten, was taken by his father (who had been a member of the moving industry since the early '60s), to his first conventions in Latin America. He went to different countries and met individuals from the industry who were also from different parts of the world. He was the only little kid in the meetings. Besides enjoying and learning about the cultures of the various countries he visited, he experienced a variety of food choices, which were very different from his own country. What a treat!

Hubo alguna vez, un niño en 1966 que, a los 10 años de edad, era llevado por su padre, quien era parte de la industria de las mudanzas desde principios de los años 1960, a las convenciones de su industria en Latinoamérica. Viajó a distintos países y conoció a los individuos de la industria que eran, también, de distintas partes del mundo. Era él el único pequeño en las reuniones. Además de disfrutar y aprender sobre las culturas de los distintos países del mundo que visitaba, experimentó una variedad de opciones de comida, las cuales eran muy distintas a las de su propio país ¡Qué privilegio!

Well, that little kid was me, Richard Darmanin, and my father was Charlie Darmanin, from Capitol Transportation in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He would say to me "what better school to learn about the world, people, and their cultures"! I never knew what I was in for when we would travel, but I took it all in! At first, it was overwhelming, to get on a plane, to go to another country, and to be with my father’s friends from all over the world…Wow!!! I would talk to everybody, and rapidly they all became my “tíos and tías”.

As I grew older, I became interested in the family business, which I really didn’t have much of a choice, for how could you not love it? My participation then in the LACMA organization became more and more of an interest to me. Let me take you back a few decades…

The era is the early 60’s in Latin America, and countries like Mexico and Brazil, and even Panama played big roles in commerce and national security. I will never forget my first trip to Panama when I got to see in person the Panama Canal, and how the ships where transiting. You don’t get that in a classroom! It was a time in which the military presence was huge in Panama due to the Cuban missile crisis.

So you can imagine the tremendous amount of moves in and out of Panama at the time. We had the same situation in Puerto Rico for we had Naval, Air Force, and Army Bases too, so the military movement was huge.

The U.S. carriers who controlled the moves for the U.S. Government appointed us individual agents to be their representatives in each of our respected countries, to perform origin and destination services.

What happened here is all history in the making…

These carriers started to open offices in some of our Latin American countries so that they could provide the services themselves and make all the profit, leaving us agents out of the picture.

Business owners were getting together to find a way to mitigate their losses and hopefully put a stop to this, by not allowing the carriers to continue opening in other countries. And it all happened one day in Chicago, at an Allied Van Line Convention. A group of passionate young movers from various Latin American countries decided to form an organization to represent the interest of the

Bueno, les comento que ¡aquel pequeño era yo: Richard Darmanin y mi padre, Charlie Darmanin, de la empresa Capitol Transportation de San Juan, Puerto Rico. Él solía decirme: “¡Qué mejor escuela para conocer sobre el mundo, la gente y sus culturas!” Nunca supe en lo que me metía cuando viajábamos, ¡pero lo absorbí todo! Al principio, era abrumador subirme a un avión, viajar a otro país y estar con los amigos de mi padre de todas partes del mundo... ¡Wow! Me daba a la tarea de hablar con todos y pronto todos se convirtieron en mis “tíos y tías”.

Mientras crecía, desarrollé un interés en el negocio familiar, aunque, en realidad, no tenía mucho de dónde escoger, por lo que ¿cómo no quererlo? Mi participación en aquel entonces en la organización llamada LACMA se convirtió cada vez más en un interés para mí. Permítanme llevarles unas décadas hacía atrás...

La época era principios de los años sesenta en Latinoamérica, y países como México y Brasil, y aún Panamá, jugaban papeles de importancia en el comercio y la seguridad nacional de Estados Unidos. Nunca olvidaré mi primer viaje a Panamá, cuando vi en persona el Canal de Panamá y cómo los barcos transitan por él. ¡Eso no se experimenta en el salón de clases! Era una época en la que la presencia militar estadounidense era grande en Panamá debido a la crisis de los misiles en Cuba. ¿Pueden imaginarse la tremenda cantidad de mudanzas que se realizaban hacia y desde Panamá en aquella época?

Experimentamos la misma situación en Puerto Rico, ya que también teníamos bases navales, de la fuerza aérea y del ejército, por lo que el movimiento militar era grande.

Las empresas estadounidenses que controlaban las mudanzas del gobierno de Estados Unidos nos asignó a nosotros, quienes ejercíamos como agentes independientes, como sus representantes en cada uno de nuestros respectivos países, a fin de realizar servicios de origen y destino.

Lo que ocurrió aquí, como dicen, es historia…

Dichas empresas empezaron a abrir oficinas en algunos de nuestros países latinoamericanos para poder brindar los servicios ellos mismos y obtener todas las ganancias, dejándonos a nosotros, los agentes, fuera de la ecuación.

region, and so the name “Latin American and Caribbean Movers Association” (LACMA) was formed. This was the beginning of what was to come, and after 50 years, is today.

The Good Old Boys’ Club Why the Good Old Boys’ Club? Well, back in the day the “Good Old Boys” had a way of doing things. These guys were true mavericks in the industry and in their countries. The business was booming so they had to form a strong coalition to defend their markets. I can tell you from the days in which my father was in Puerto Rico and the Unions moved into our country. The Teamsters Union headed back then by the famous "mafioso” Jimmy Hoffa, came to Puerto Rico and met with my father to become the first unionized and organized moving-and-logistics company in Puerto Rico.

This made things very interesting at the time when the companies in the U.S. wanted to establish operations in our territories. The Union did not make things easy for them, think about it… These “foreigners” coming to our country to set up a competition and not hire Union workers! No way!! And as time would prove, they did not last long. And just like this, other countries had a strong hand in seeing that their companies would survive the invasion of foreign competition.

The “Boys”, on the other hand, played their cards well against the large carriers with the formation of LACMA. They presented a strong united front in which they looked after each other. There was much controversy back then, even amongst the LACMA members. Oh, and do I remember how they would argue and insult each other before the General Assembly… I am sure many of you remember those heated meetings, but this would be the Latin blood, with their passion and emotions taking over.

As I became more involved in the association as a young adult, I was asked to join the Board in my mid 20’s, which to me was a real honor. So as the years passed, I went from Director to Secretary, to Vice President, and finally, to President. All during the early

Y todo ocurrió un día en Chicago en una convención de Allied Van Line. Un grupo de apasionados jóvenes mudanceros de varios países latinoamericanos decidieron formar una organización que representase los intereses de la región, y fue así que surgió el nombre de Asociación Latinoamericana y del Caribe de Mudanzas Internacionales (LACMA). Este era el inicio de lo que estaba por venir, y 50 años más tarde, es el día de hoy.

El Club de los viejos amigos ¿Por qué el Club de los viejos amigos? Bueno, en aquel entonces, los “viejos amigos” tenían una manera de hacer las cosas. Estos tipos eran los verdaderos pioneros en la industria y en sus países. El negocio estaba floreciendo, por lo que necesitaban formar una coalición fuerte para defender sus mercados. Puedo contarles sobre los días en que mi padre estaba en Puerto Rico y los sindicatos llegaron al país. El Sindicato de Camioneros, dirigido en aquel entonces por el famoso “mafioso” Jimmy Hoffa, llegó a Puerto Rico y se reunió con mi padre para convertirnos en la primera empresa de mudanzas y logística en Puerto Rico en poseer sindicatos organizados. Esto hizo las cosas muy interesantes en el tiempo en que las empresas en Estados Unidos deseaban iniciar operaciones en nuestros territorios. Los sindicatos no les facilitaron las cosas, ¡piénsenlo! Estos “extranjeros” llegan a nuestro país para crear competencia ¡y no contratan trabajadores de los sindicatos! ¡De ninguna manera! Y, tal como el tiempo comprobó, no permanecieron mucho tiempo.

Y, de igual manera, otros países trabajaban abiertamente para hacer que sus compañías sobreviviesen la invasión de la competencia extranjera.

Por otro lado, los “viejos amigos” jugaron bien sus cartas contra las grandes empresas extranjeras en la creación de LACMA. Ellos presentaron un fuerte frente común en el que se protegían entre sí. Hubo mucha controversia en aquel entonces, aún entre los miembros de LACMA. Oh, y sí recuerdo cómo discutían y se insultaban entre sí antes de la Asamblea General... Estoy seguro que muchos de ustedes recuerdan aquellas acaloradas reuniones, pero eso se debe a la sangre latina, con la pasión y las emociones, tomando control de las cosas.

Al involucrarme en la asociación como adulto joven se me invitó a formar parte de la Junta cuando tenía alrededor de 25 años de edad, lo que fue un verdadero honor para mí. Así que, al pasar los años, pasé de ser Director a Secretario, y de ahí, a Vicepresidente y, finalmente, a Presidente. Todo esto cubrió, desde los primeros años del establecimiento de LACMA hasta encontrar maneras de ofrecer programas para unificar a la membresía y darle oportunidades, además de elevar los estándares operativos en todos nuestros países mediante el establecimiento de programas de entrenamiento.

Nunca olvidaré a nuestro querido amigo inglés de LACMA, el Sr. Brian Charles de la firma Michael Gerson del Reino Unido, quien por años fue nuestro mentor.

Para entonces, nuestra LACMA estaba siendo reconocida en foros mundiales como FIDI y CETI (la actual OMNI) entre otras. Cuando FIDI buscaba una organización que la representase en Latinoamérica, LACMA fue la escogida.

Nunca olvidaré cuando uno de mis tíos, Rafael “Lito” Suárez, de Mudanzas Suárez, de El Salvador, deseaba ser el primer presidente Latinoamericano de FIDI, y vaya que un día llegó a serlo. Y cuando a nuestro querido amigo Jorge Laporta

stages of setting LACMA up to find ways to offer the membership programs to unify them, and give them learning opportunities besides raising the standards of operations in all of our different countries, by establishing training programs.

I will never forget our dear LACMA Englishman friend, Mr. Brian Charles from Michael Gerson in the UK, whom for years was our mentor.

By now, our LACMA was being recognized in the world forums like FIDI, CETI (which today is OMNI), among other worldwide moving associations. When FIDI was looking for an organization to represent them in Latin America, LACMA was the choice. I will never forget when one of my “tíos”, Rafael “Lito” Suárez from Mudanzas Suarez in El Salvador, wanted to be the first Latin American President of FIDI, and one day he was. And when our dear friend Jorge Laporta from Ward Van Lines in Chile, was not allowed to join LACMA, nor was Harriett Stokes from VIP in Venezuela, for the By-Laws impeded entry to those that had worked with moving companies prior to them forming their own.

There was a very strong group of active members in LACMA that lobbied to change these By-Laws to eventually allow entry of these individuals that sat on the sideline for many years and to eventually be allowed to join LACMA. Jorge Laporta later became the second Latin American President to FIDI, so now Latin America was really on the radar!

We were definitely “MOVERS & SHAKERS… There are so many memories in my life that this beautiful industry and most importantly, this association has given me throughout the years … Way too many to cover here. But there is one thing I can tell you from my own personal view, and that is how I have seen this association grow into what it has become today. I applaud those LACMA parents who also bring their kids to the conventions, so they can be involved in this industry at an early age. Seeing this reminds me of my times with my father. So, my friends, this is what LACMA is all about, and what has brought us to today, and will continue to take us forward.

Our business relationships have been formed in honor to serve, but most importantly, our love for LACMA is what brings us all together. The business will come and go, but our friendship will endure forever and ever. Believe me, especially now that I have retired from the industry, it honors me to still have my worldwide friends...AMIGOS PARA SIEMPRE!!!

de Ward Van Lines, de Chile, no se le permitió ser parte de LACMA, ni tampoco a Harriett Stokes de VIP de Venezuela, ya que los estatutos impedían la entrada de aquellos que habían trabajado con compañías de mudanzas antes de establecer las propias. Hubo un grupo muy fuerte de miembros activos en LACMA que cabildearon para cambiar dichos estatutos, permitiendo, eventualmente, la entrada de estos individuos que permanecían sentados en las barreras durante muchos años, y a quienes no se les permitía ser parte de LACMA. Jorge Laporta, posteriormente, se convirtió en el segundo presidente latinoamericano de FIDI, por lo que ahora ¡Latinoamérica estaba en el radar! Éramos, en definitiva, “MUDANCEROS Y REVOLUCIONARIOS” ...

Hay tantas memorias en mi vida que esta hermosa industria y, mayormente, esta asociación, me han dado a través de los años... demasiadas para ser cubiertas en estas páginas. Pero hay algo que puedo contarles desde mi punto de vista, y es la manera en que he visto crecer a esta asociación en lo que se ha convertido hoy día. Aplaudo a aquellos padres LACMA que también llevan a sus hijos a las convenciones, a fin de que puedan involucrarse en esta industria a edades tempranas. Ver esto me recuerda a mis tiempos con mi padre. Así que, amigos, esto es de lo que se trata LACMA, y lo que nos traído hasta el día de hoy y continuará llevándonos hacia adelante.

Nuestras relaciones de negocios se han forjado con el honor de servir, pero primordialmente, nuestro AMOR por LACMA es lo que nos ha unido. El negocio vendrá y se irá, pero nuestra amistad durará por siempre. Créanme, especialmente ahora que estoy retirado de la industria, es para mí un honor contar aún con mis amigos de todo el mundo... ¡AMIGOS PARA SIEMPRE! Así que, a los Padres Fundadores que tuvieron un sueño, y a nosotros, los “chicos LACMA” que mantuvimos vivo el sueño, les digo que la hora ha llegado para sumarnos al “Club de los viejos amigos”, permitiendo que los “nuevos chicos LACMA” tomen las riendas y mantengan vivo el sueño por los próximos 50 años. ¡Feliz 50 aniversario, LACMA!!

So to our Founding Fathers who had the dream, and to us “LACMA Kids” that kept the dream alive, it is now time for us to step up to the “Old Boys’ Club” allowing the “New LACMA Kids” to take over and keep the dream going for another 50 years.

1. For how many years did you do the LACMA magazine?

How did that come about?

1. ¿Durante cuántos años editó usted la revista de LACMA? ¿Cómo llegó usted a esa posición?

I was always on good terms with LACMA and used to help its Secretary (whose name escapes me – tall, blonde girl with a squeaky voice!) and when she left LACMA she recommended that I take over the magazine. Sherry Williams took over the LACMA job and I worked with her. It must have been the early to mid-nineties. I was very keen to take on the magazine as I loved the people of LACMA, but it probably wasn’t very sensible as I didn’t speak or write Spanish and some 14 hours flying time separated our two offices! I had very strong support from people like Richard Darmanin, but it was a combination of distance and internal politics that brought my involvement to an end. It was a pity, but probably all for the best for LACMA itself which needed a ‘local’ voice.

Siempre he tenido buenas relaciones con LACMA y a menudo ayudaba a su Secretaria (cuyo nombre se me escapa –¡una chica alta y rubia con una voz chillona!) y cuando ella se fue de LACMA, me recomendó para que asumiera la revista.

Sherry Williams asumió la gerencia de LACMA y trabajé con ella. Eso debió haber sido entre principios y mediados de los noventa. Siempre mostré interés en trabajar con la revista, ya que me encantaba la gente de LACMA, pero probablemente no era tan sensible, ya que no hablaba ni escribía en español, ¡y unas 14 horas de vuelo separaban nuestras dos oficinas! Fui fuertemente apoyado por personas como Richard Darmanin, pero fue una combinación de distancia y asuntos internos lo que llevó mi participación a su final. Fue una lástima, pero probablemente todo fue para el bien de LACMA, que necesitaba una voz “local”.

2. Which was your first LACMA convention? Anything you remember from that event?

First was in Rio de Janeiro. I didn’t know anyone and Mr. Klein of Transportes Fink and his staff made sure I met lots of people and made me feel very welcome. I remember the day out was to an island where we swam in beautiful blue/green sea and had a wonderful lunch on the beach – and of course, the convention included an evening out at Carnival, which was amazing. I stood there open-mouthed at all these beautiful girls swinging on their trapezes, and I think it was Vladimir de Mello who whispered in my ear that in fact, they were all men!

3. You came to several conventions throughout the years… what do you remember from them, the people? Any anecdotes or particular thing that brings a smile to your face when looking back at them?

You could fill a book with some of the stories, but of course, one would probably end up being sued in the law courts! But I remember in Quito we arrived at the same time as student riots began. I was out walking in the park with Bart Barbee (Victory Van) when the police made a tear gas charge and we were caught up in the middle of it. It was a novel experience and Bart saved two empty gas canisters to give to my wife Pam as it was her birthday that day. When we were back in our hotel room and looking out of the windows, students were hurling rocks at us (their accuracy was remarkable!). But there was a serious side to LACMA which made the conferences worth attending – there was always plenty to write about. One would never attend a conference just for social occasions as it was not economic for the magazine. But when business was done, it was party time. LACMA had a bit of a reputation for just wanting a good time, but that didn’t reflect its

2. ¿Cuál fue su primera convención LACMA? ¿Recuerda algo de aquel evento?

La primera fue en Río de Janeiro. No conocía a nadie, y el Sr. Klein de Transportes Fink y su personal se aseguraron de que conociera a mucha gente y me hicieron sentir en casa.

Recuerdo que el día de paseo fue a una isla en donde nadamos en un hermoso mar verde azulado, y disfrutamos de un excelente almuerzo en la playa –y, por supuesto, la convención incluyó una noche en el Carnaval, que fue sorprendente. Quedé boquiabierto al ver a todas esas chicas hermosas colgando de sus trapecios, y creo que fue Vladimir de Mello quien me susurró al oído que, de hecho, ¡se trataba de hombres!

3. Usted llegó a varias convenciones a través de los años... ¿Qué recuerda de ellas y de la gente? ¿Alguna anécdota o algo en particular que le dibuja una sonrisa en su rostro al recordarla?

Es posible llenar un libro con algunas de esas historias, pero, por supuesto, ¡uno podría terminar siendo demandado en las cortes! Pero recuerdo en Quito que llegamos cuando empezaba una revuelta estudiantil. Me encontraba caminando en el parque con Bart Barbee (Victory Van) cuando la policía hizo una descarga de gas lacrimógeno y quedamos atrapados en medio de todo eso. Fue una experiencia como de novela, y Bart guardó dos cartuchos de gas vacíos para dárselos a Pam, mi esposa, ya que cumplía ella años ese día. De vuelta en nuestra habitación de hotel, vimos desde nuestras ventanas

responsible side and it was a very progressive organization – and considering the cultural, geographic, and economic scope of its membership, it did a remarkable job. There were always a lot of politics, as there are with any association, but LACMA has gone from strength to strength where many others have rather faded away.

4. Now that you are retired, do you miss wearing those fantastic and cute bow ties? Did you also get rid of all of them?

The bow ties! I have about one hundred of them and they lead a very quiet life in a dark corner of a wardrobe. I keep meaning to throw them out, but then I pick one up and think “Oh, I can’t get rid of this one. I remember I was wearing this when so and so happened...”

I was always good friends with Tom Mitchell (Davies Turner) who was such a supporter of LACMA. He used to tell me the most wonderful stories about LACMA meetings, its members and its overseas associates... I am sure there are a lot of former LACMA personalities who sleep better at night now knowing that Tom took their stories into the next world…

Pero había un lado serio de LACMA que hacía que valiera la pena asistir a las conferencias –siempre había mucho de qué escribir. Uno nunca atendería una conferencia únicamente por el aspecto social, ya que no era económicamente viable para la revista. Pero cuando concluía la parte profesional, llegaba la hora de la fiesta. LACMA tenía cierta reputación de ser un evento para divertirse, pero eso no refleja su lado responsable y era una organización muy progresista –y considerando el ámbito cultural, geográfico y económico de su membresía, hizo un trabajo sobresaliente. Siempre hubo mucha política, como en toda asociación, pero LACMA ha ido de fuerza en fuerza, mientras que muchos otros se han desvanecido.

4. Ahora que se ha jubilado, ¿extraña lucir aquellas fantásticas corbatas de lazo? ¿Se deshizo de todas ella? ¡Los corbatines! Debo tener como cien de ellos, y mantienen una vida bastante tranquila en un oscuro rincón de algún guardarropa. Siempre intento desecharlos, pero entonces tomo una y pienso, “Oh, no puedo deshacerme de este. Recuerdo que lo usaba cuando ocurrió esto o aquello...”

Tom Mitchel (Davies Turner) y yo siempre fuimos buenos amigos, y él apoyaba mucho a LACMA. Solía contarme las historias más maravillosas sobre las convenciones LACMA, sus miembros y sus socios en el extranjero...Estoy seguro que hay muchas antiguas personalidades de LACMA que duermen tranquilas de noche ahora, sabiendo que Tom se llevó sus historias al más allá...

NATIONAL WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA DAY DÍA NACIONAL DE COLOCACIÓN DE CORONAS FLORALES EN EE.UU. Arpin Van Lines’ drivers and agents from locations across the country volunteered to collect and deliver remembrance wreaths to be laid at veteran cemeteries on National Wreaths Across America Day on December 15. Combined, Arpin drivers and agents delivered 23 truckloads, which carried 10,331 boxes containing 92,979 wreaths, to veteran cemeteries across the United States for remembrance ceremonies.

SHARING KNOWLEDGE COMPARTIENDO LO APRENDIDO

Gerardo Odio, Move Coordinator of Grupo Mudanzas Mundiales Costa Rica, and César Gutiérrez, the Group’s Move Coordinator in Nicaragua became Leader-Coaches for high-performance teams after taking part in the LACMA Packers Certification Program, which was offered in Panama in October 2018.

The training’s objective was to unify the criteria and work methodologies of the association’s members, in order to consolidate packing and customer-service best practice, in addition to offering our commercial partners a standardized, high-quality service.

Last January, Gerardo Odio prepared and offered the training program to the staff of the operations department which included, not only packers but drivers and carpenters as well. Said associates attended two intensive theoretical-practical sessions, during which they shared their experiences in day-to-day activities, and incorporated new techniques and concepts into their know-how.

Grupo Mudanzas Mundiales takes this opportunity to thank its associates for their disposition, just as it thanks LACMA for constantly fostering professional training and a drive for self-improvement in each of its services.

Los mismos asistieron a dos jornadas intensivas teórico prácticas, donde aportaron sus experiencias en el trabajo cotidiano e incorporaron nuevas técnicas y conceptos a sus conocimientos.

Ella será la responsable de coordinar mudanzas de clientes, supervisando evaluaciones para reportes de menajes y tonelaje, al igual que de asistir con la gestión de facturación y seguros.

A LIFE IN INTERNATIONAL TRANSPORT LOGISTICS UNA VIDA EN LA LOGÍSTICA DEL TRANSPORTE INTERNACIONAL Almost 43 years ago, in August 1976, Ulrich Weichert started his vocational training at Rosebrock in Bremen. After national military service, he initially worked in the Accounts Department as an assistant to the Managing Director. His career continued in the commercial area, where he qualified as an accountant. In July 2001, the company shareholders appointed him to the post of Managing Director finance.

Mr. Weichert was involved in major milestones of the company’s development. They included the relocation to the GVZ Cargo Distribution Centre along with construction of the new Rosebrock headquarters, the development of the International Moving Department, foundation of the branch in Poland, and expansion into the business fields air and ocean freight for industrial customers as well as project forwarding.

Over the past years, Mr. Weichert ran the company together with his fellow Managing Director, Mr. Martin Sommer. Now he is handing over his duties as the Director of Financial Accounting to Christian Klar.

The management, shareholders and all employees of Rosebrock wish Mr. Weichert all the best for his retirement and thank him warmly for his many years of service.

Hace casi 43 años, en agosto de 1976, Ulrich Weichert comenzó su formación profesional en Rosebrock en Bremen.

Después del servicio militar nacional, inicialmente trabajó en el Departamento de Cuentas como asistente del Director General. Su carrera continuó en el área comercial, donde se tituló como contador.

En julio de 2001, los accionistas de la compañía lo nombraron para el puesto de Director de Finanzas.

El Sr. Weichert estuvo involucrado en los principales hitos del desarrollo de la compañía. Incluyeron la reubicación en el Centro de distribución de carga GVZ junto con la construcción de la nueva sede de Rosebrock, el desarrollo del Departamento de mudanzas internacionales, la fundación de la sucursal en Polonia y la expansión a los campos comerciales de carga aérea y marítima para clientes industriales, así como reenvío de proyectos.

En los últimos años, el Sr. Weichert dirigió la empresa junto con su compañero Director Gerente, el Sr. Martin Sommer. Ahora está entregando sus deberes como Director de Contabilidad Financiera a Christian Klar.

La gerencia, los accionistas y todos los empleados de Rosebrock desean al Sr. Weichert todo lo mejor para su jubilación y agradecerle calurosamente por sus muchos años de servicio.
