Midway between Edmonton and Fort McMurray, the Lac La Biche Region is easy to find and easy to explore.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS From Edmonton (approx. two hours and 30 minutes of driving time): Follow HWY 28 north for 145 km, then turn left onto Highway 36.

Follow HWY 36 north for 70 km, through Kikino Métis Settlement and straight into the hamlet of Lac La Biche.

From Fort McMurray (approx. three hours of driving time): Follow HWY 63 south for 240 km, then turn left onto HWY 55.

Follow HWY 55 east for 40 km into Lac La Biche.

The Visitor Information Centre is located on the corner of 99 Street and 101 Avenue (Main Street) in Lac La Biche. RV parking is available, and a public beach, playground, spray park and picnic area are all nearby.

HISTORY & CULTURE Let the Lac La Biche Region take you back in time. Our story began long ago – before Alberta became a province, before Canada became a country, before Europeans settled the northwest. Come and experience this land of living history that’s brought together a wealth of cultural groups from all around the world.

Famous explorer and mapmaker David Thompson was the first recorded European to reach the shores of Lac La Biche Lake, back in 1798. A trading post was built soon after, making the hamlet of Lac La Biche the second-oldest permanent settlement in Alberta.

The Lac La Biche Mission was established in 1853, and it was an important landmark of the fur trade era and the pioneer age that followed. In its heyday, the Mission had pride of place in a vast transportation network that stretched across the Prairies and into the Northwest Territories. Take a guided tour of this picturesque National Historic Site, complete with heritage buildings and exhibits, to glimpse life in the olden days at l’entrepot du nord, “the warehouse of the north.” The Mission is located 11 kilometres northwest of Lac La Biche.

For generations, Pow Wows have been special occasions for Indigenous families and Nations to meet to exchange news and goods, and celebrate their culture. Now a Pow Wow is the perfect way for you to gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of First Nations heritage. Dancers’ regalia is elaborate and unique, and every Pow Wow dance has a story. Beaver Lake Cree Nation and Heart Lake First Nation are both part of the Pow Wow circuit, attracting hundreds of performers from across North America.

INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES LAC LA BICHE REGION IS LOCATED ON TREATY 6 AND TREATY 8 TERRITORY. The Lac La Biche Region has been home to Indigenous peoples for thousands of years. The reserve lands of Beaver Lake, Heart Lake and Whitefish (Goodfish) Lake are home to Nehiyawak (Cree) Nations, whose members practice traditional ways of life that honour both their ancestors and generations yet to come.

The Métis people are descended from both French-Canadian and First Nations ancestors, and their culture reflects this blended heritage. The Métis are recognized as a distinct Indigenous people in Canada, and Alberta is the only province that has constitutionally protected Métis lands. Two of these Métis Settlements - Buffalo Lake and Kikino, which means “Our home” in Cree - are found in Lac La Biche Region.

BEAVER LAKE PROVINCIAL RECREATION AREA Sand, sun and surf are all on the itinerary. The vast beach on the north shore of Beaver Lake beckons for a day of boating, fishing, sunbathing and swimming.

Individual and group camping facilities are available for when the sun goes down.

SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL PROVINCIAL PARK One of the most unique parks in the province, Sir Winston Churchill sprawls across seven islands in Lac La Biche Lake. The islands protect old-growth forests, where hundreds of bird species wait in the branches for you to spot them. The main islands are accessible by a causeway, and they feature a variety of camping options, including cabins and tipis, and year-round hiking trails through a special ecosystem hundreds of years in the making.

LAKELAND PROVINCIAL PARK AND PROVINCIAL RECREATION AREA This park is all about size and the sheer grandeur of the wild. A combined 590 square kilometres of protected area covers 11 major lakes, all connected by 45 kilometres’ worth of trails and portages through unspoiled wilderness. Mother Nature isn’t just your neighbour here – she’s your roommate. This park is one of Alberta’s official Dark Sky preserves (see pages 44-45) and contains the province’s only backcountry canoe circuit (see next page).

CROW LAKE PROVINCIAL PARK Campers and paddlers who appreciate having space to share and room to breathe will find a lot to enjoy about Crow Lake. The impressive view of the lake from Highway 63 is just the start. Campground amenities are very basic and motorized watercraft are not permitted on the lake, so it’s just you and your paddle as you head over to spot wildlife in the nearby Crow Lake Ecological Reserve. Park is currently closed due to COVID-19.

LAKELAND PROVINCIAL PARK Live like a modern-day voyageur and experience the boreal forest backcountry like never before.

Portage your canoe or kayak to Jackson Lake and embark on the Lakeland Canoe Circuit, Alberta’s only backcountry paddling route.

The full circuit takes adventurous paddlers on a three-day, 40-km journey across Jackson, Kinnaird, Blackett and McGuffin Lakes, to hidden waters and little pieces of paradise that land-based travellers don’t get to see. You may wish to stay longer, as the primal wilderness works its magic.

Jackson Lake Staging Area is the preferred starting point for the circuit. It is located on Highway 663, east of Lac La Biche on the way to Touchwood Lake.

Old Conklin Road North of Lac La Biche Lake, the wilderness is open to all, but adventured by few. The Old Conklin Road winds through the sea of trees, deep into Crown land where backcountry camping and exploration await. The road is not an all-weather route, and the journey to Goodwin, Steepbank and Wappau Lakes can be an adventure in itself. Go far enough north and you might even spot rare endangered woodland caribou.

FAVOURITE TRAILS On foot or on wheels, the Lac La Biche Region is yours to explore.

Lakefront Walking Path: Park at McArthur Park and head west to see the statue of David Thompson, or head east all the way to Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park. If the saying “Have wheels, will travel” sounds right to you, then rent a bicycle from Aniwye Adventures in McArthur Park.

Boardwalk Trail at Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park: Begin with a boardwalk and end with a beach, climbing and winding through a centuriesold forest. A viewing platform for observing the nearby Pelican Islands is near the trailhead.

Long Point Trail at Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park: Hike to the western tip of the park’s main island, admiring panoramic lake views throughout the two-kilometre walk.

ATV and Snowmobile Trails in Lakeland Provincial Park & Provincial Recreation Area: The protected primeval wilderness east of Lac La Biche has 140 km worth of trails suitable for off-road vehicles. There are four ATV staging areas, giving adventurous riders access to remote backcountry camping and day-use sites. Visit albertaparks.ca for more information.

WATCHABLE WILDLIFE Part of the Lac La Biche Region’s charm is just how close it brings you to nature.

That means having plenty of wild neighbours. Remember to keep your distance and avoid disturbing any wildlife you encounter. Make noise so animals know you’re coming, and never feed wildlife.

Moose are the biggest members of the deer family, typically weighing 700 pounds or more. Despite their bulk, they’re natural swimmers with a taste for aquatic plants.

Black bears are forest-dwelling omnivores with a special liking for berries. Most bears are shy and would rather avoid humans, but take precautions and be “bear smart” to prevent any problems.

Deer are everywhere in our region, even sometimes in our urban centres. They’re often seen in small groups. Watch for them crossing the road, especially at twilight.

Beavers are the engineers of the wild, building dams that can change whole landscapes. Their dome-shaped lodges are common sights in ponds and shallow areas of lakes.

Red foxes are naturally suited to the region’s mix of woods and meadows. Look closely while on a nature walk to see the burrows where they breed, and maybe a furry face or two looking back.

BIRDWATCHING Lac La Biche Region is a birdwatcher’s paradise. The area was declared a Bird Sanctuary in 1920. Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park alone provides habitat for more than 200 bird species, large and small.

Pelicans migrate to our region’s waters every summer to breed. Bring your binoculars and look for them on the aptly named Pelican Islands, visible from the main island of Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park.

Birds of prey are frequent visitors. Eagles and ospreys circle the lakes, owls swoop through the trees and hawks soar over the grasslands.

Water birds like grebes, herons and terns are common sights in the warmer months. Some spend the winters on the coast, or as far away as South America, but they return to the northern lakes year after year.
