The snow melts and the buds swell on the trees as a new season begins–
As the trees' leaf out and the flowers start to bloom, we transition from winter activities to spring pursuits.
The Spring Activity Guide provides a variety of opportunities for you to bloom this year. Is your interest in the latest mystery, or are you starting a new hobby? Then check out the library collection that continues to grow. Spring sports are rooting around the County. Are you a ball, lacrosse, or soccer player? Find an organization to settle in with in the guide. We have sports for all ages.
The cultural offerings are bountiful and are sure to provide opportunities to expand your personal growth. How about a class from the Art Center, or catching one of the guest speakers in the community? Remember the Summer Concerts are right around the corner.
The Social Services Division and our community partners are available for those that have personal or family struggle. This mighty team is working hard to connect community members with service and resource to manage life's challenges. Please ask for assistance, don't feel like you have to go through the situation alone. Our team is here to help.
We added a new section to the Activity Guide so you can stay informed with the projects in progress that were identified from the development of the Integrated Master Plan. Several are underway this spring, such as the White Rock Skate Park renovation, playground renovation at 37th Street and Pinion (Rocket), and the Trails and Open Space Management Plan.
Please get out and enjoy the community offerings and follow your passion!

11:00am - 12:00pm Therapy Fun & Fitness
Aquatic exercise promotes and enhances physical and mental fitness. The water’s unique properties allow the pool to provide an environment for people of all abilities. Buoyancy creates a reduced impact that is easier on joints and water resistance challenges the muscles. The beauty of water is the ability to offer aerobic activity, resistance training and flexibility all at the same time. Water is thicker than air, so muscles get stronger.
Deep Water Fun & Fitness: Zero impact, comfortably paced class that uses the water’s resistance to improve your fitness, flexibility, range of motion, strength, and balance.
Therapy Fun & Fitness: Low impact, warm-water class held in the therapy pool. Includes working on range of motion, toning, stretching and balance. Participants with orthopedic concerns, arthritis, asthma and other conditions have found this class to be beneficial. The maximum class size is 18 students.
WaterWorks!: A low impact, but effective water aerobics class designed to improve flexibility, range of motion, strength, muscle tone and cardiovascular endurance while using the resistance of the water to cushion the feet, knees and back. May use equipment including noodles, belts, bands and boards. Water shoes recommended.
Aqua Zumba: Splashing, stretching, twisting – even shouting, laughing, hooting, and hollering! Salsa, Merengue, Disco, and more in chest deep water for a great low impact but challenging workout. Integrating the Zumba philosophy with traditional aquatic fitness, Aqua Zumba classes blend it all together into a workout that's cardioconditioning, and body-toning. Water shoes recommended.
Stand Up Paddle Board Yoga (SUP): Take your fitness routine to the mat -- a floating mat. SUP Yoga is a combination of paddle boarding and yoga practice. It challenges you to find another level of balance and focus your mind, all while floating atop the water. Think it sounds hard? Take a deep, centering breath; it's easier than you think, and perfect for both yoga and paddle boarding newbies.
Safety Note: All deep-water classes use flotation belts for support. Swimming skills are not necessary. Participants should be comfortable in deep water. If you arrive late or leave class early please include time for an individual warm up and cool down. Students work at own level.

The golf course, built in 1947 by the Atomic Energy Commission, is one of the oldest 18-hole golf courses in New Mexico. Located on the eastern flank of the Jemez Mountains, Los Alamos enjoys a mountain backdrop amid the orange cliffs of the Pajarito Plateau. The town spans three miles of the plateau, interrupted by deeply incised canyons that offer natural escapes within the town’s limits. White Rock lies on the edge of the 1,000-foot deep White Rock Canyon, carved by the Rio Grande.
The canyons and mesas in and around the County are linked by 100+ miles of trail network. Hikers and runners, horseback riders, mountain bikers, and other trail users delight in the variety to choose from. The trails offer a quick escape from the busy pace in town, a way to commute to work, an easy stroll or a physical challenge, and a chance to observe wildlife or soak in the views.
Watch for the “Trailhead” signs along major roads throughout the County.
Find more information about the County Trail Network on-line: losalamosnm.us
Los Alamos County Open Space is open to non-motorized use only. Hiking, running, horse travel, and mountain biking are permitted on County trails.
Resource Protection: All cultural resources such as Ancestral Pueblo room blocks, pot shards, petroglyphs, and historical artifacts are protected by Federal and State law. Let all cultural resources lie undisturbed.
Share the Trail: These are multi-use trails for pedestrians, equestrians, and bicyclists. Bicyclists should yield to all other users.
Dogs in Los Alamos County Open Space: All dogs must be on a leash within 100 yards of a trailhead. Dogs must be under voice and sight control at all times.
Safety: When exploring trails, always carry water, sunscreen, a hat, extra clothing, a flashlight, and a navigational aid.
Trailhead guides are available at major trailheads, the Los Alamos County Customer Care Center in the Municipal Building, the Los Alamos Nature Center, and on-line.

Sessions are guided by an adult facilitator, to promote a supportive environment and provide a safe place to speak about issues. Sessions are typically held at the Los Alamos Elementary, Middle, and High Schools.

This is an approach to justice in which the response is an organized meeting between the victim and the youth offender. This approach aims to provide the offender the opportunity to take responsibility for their actions, to understand the harm they caused, give them an opportunity to redeem themselves, and discourage them from causing further harm. As a victim, this provides an active role in the process.
Classes are offered throughout the year to adults who regularly interact with young people, ages 10-18. The course introduces common mental health challenges, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan on how to help young people in a crisis and non-crisis situation.

Staff is working with a contractor to redesign the Canyon Road medians to provide a better look, reduce water usage, and minimize pesticide use. The location is an extremely challenging due to the snow operations and heat of summer.
Library staff has requested a place for outdoor learning. A task order has been issued to evaluate and design a concept for an outdoor classroom between the Mesa Public Library and the Betty Erhart Senior Center.
As a recommendation from the 2023 Integrated Master Plan the County is reviewing, combining, and updating several trail and open space documents into a single guiding “Trail and Open Space Management Plan”. This plan will be based on the 2022 Trailhead Assessment Plan, 2009 Trail Management Plan (revised 2022), 2013 Los Alamos Community Trail Plan, 2015 Open Space Management Plan, 2023 Restoration Feasibility Assessment, 2022 Los Alamos Americans with Disabilities Plan and the 2023 Integrated Master Plan. This process will have several opportunities for community feedback and participation in the process. The result is to have a single guiding document for the community as look to the future for managing our trails and open space so all users and abilities can enjoy our natural environment. Be on the lookout for opportunities to participate this winter.
Staff is working with a contractor to collect public feedback and replace the elements at the White Rock Skate Park with new elements.
The athletic field maintenance was a topic during the development of the 2023 Integrated Master Plan, as such funding was allocated in FY24 budget to begin renovation the athletic fields. The first fields in the mix will be Daria Jones Field, Hope Field and Bomber Field. This project is anticipated to starting the summer of 2024. The project will consist of leveling the playing surfaces, new turf, laser grade and revitalize the infield and adjust the irrigation heads.
Staff secured a grant from the NM Outdoor Recreation Trails + to develop a 3/4 mile looped trail that is ADA accessible. The Trail will connect From PEEC to make a loop in Kinnikinnik Park. The trail will allow for those with physical challenges to enjoy the beautiful scenic area. Additional accessible loops were part of the Integrated Master Plan's observations in increasing use for all community members.
These two playgrounds are in the process now of renovations. The LAC is seeking feedback from focus groups in the desires for the two playgrounds. Both of these were identified in the level of service and ADA Audit as need to be renovated. A key focus is on the accessibility ad inclusivity of these playgrounds.
Staff is increasing the size of the picnic pads and adding shade to Ashley Pond. The area of the work is adjacent to the Trinity Parking lot with access from the existing handicapped parking spaces. The pads will be accessible with a covered shade area so all can enjoy the benefits of the pond area.
This project will begin a significant upgrade of athletic courts in the community. The North Mesa Courts will be demolished and rebuilt from the ground up. We will start with a new base that is more stable and allow for a better playing experience. We expect to change at least one court into a tennis court as part of this process. The East Court Basketball Court needs attention as well. We are hoping to have these projects moving forward by net spring. The courts will be updated to meet ADA requirements so that all users in our community feel welcomed and can enjoy the amenities.
The Community Services Department is looking at the use of two tennis courts, one handball wall, and two playlots within Los Alamos County to see if they are the best facility use for the community. We are collecting survey responses for each location during the month of September. Each survey provides a shot description of the facility and a picture.
According to the National Park and Recreation Association Performance Review which was benchmarked during the development of the Integrated Master Plan, for similar community populations Los Alamos County has an excess of 11 courts and 14 playgrounds. The North Mesa Courts are scheduled for demolition and rebuild in the summer of 2024.
Los Alamos County is seeking design and construction services for a Bicycle Moto-Cross (BMX) Track which will require sanctioning by USA BMX. The track will be built on County owned property, located at North Mesa Park Road, on top of the existing facility. This is a design-build project, the design-build team shall include, a state licensed engineer or architect, and a contractor properly licensed in New Mexico for the type of work required. The vendor will seek stakeholder and user group input for three options on the BMX track.
Phase 1: Includes assembly of design drawings and construction documents for improvements to golf features on Holes 4 through 18, to include tees, bunkers, greens, permanent restrooms, targeted cart path upgrades and deferred maintenance.
Phase 2: Includes development of several design concept options for improving Holes 1 through 3, reconfiguring the driving range to improve safety and minimize or eliminate the use of safety netting, and other improvements such as practice area and cart path upgrades.
The existing chiller is reaching the limit of its expected life-cycle (21 out of 25 years of service) and is already presenting malfunctions. In its current condition, the existing chiller cannot be expected to make a skating ice sheet in a reliable manner.
The Public Works department is currently working on replacing the existing chiller with a new one. However, the new chiller is not an off-the-shelf product and will not be available for the 2023-2024 winter season. The time to bring a new replacement chiller is almost one year from the date of contracting with the chiller manufacturer. This long timeline results from factors intrinsic to the acquisition of a custom-built chiller. Namely, 1) the chiller is custom designed for the Los Alamos ice rink, 2) several chiller components are custom-built (long lead times), and 3) manufacturing time.
The project here presented is the procurement of rental and installation of a temporary chiller for the 2023-2024 winter season. In this manner, the Ice Rink and the County will continue to offer public skating, hockey, and skating to the Los Alamos public.
CSD has been working for the past two years on updating process, plans and programs to meet the best practice standards of Parks and Recreation Agencies. The national standards feature 164 standards that are agency reviewed through the self-assessment and then reviewed by a peer group of trained professionals. Currently they are 192 accredited agencies across the United States and only 1 in New Mexico. The program assures that the CSD is operating with the best practices for forward looking agencies and how they serve the community.
Just look around and you’ll find History, Science and Cultural Assets! A wide variety of events and programming this spring are abundant in Los Alamos. Visit our local attractions to discover more about the area, learn something new, meet local experts, and experience something special.

The basis for the Farmers Market is that every New Mexico family deserves access to fresh food, and farmers should be able to stay on their land, keep water and seeds in production, and preserve agricultural knowledge. Supporting local growers, ranchers and food producers preserves cultural identity and traditions, along with creating valuable community gathering places. It also keeps important food dollars circulating in our hometowns where it is needed most.

This is a fun program to get families outside, exploring our beautiful trails together. Los Alamos County, Bandelier, the Santa Fe National Forest, and the Valles Caldera have so many great trails, and now, thanks to support from the Delle Foundation, Clif Bar Family Foundation, Kate Svitek Memorial Foundation, and George and Helen Cowan Trust, we’re giving you an easy way to discover them. Here’s how it works:
1. As you hike the trails inside the passport, look for a wooden post or a bench with a small metal plate on it.
2. When you find the post, make a rubbing with your crayon rock.
3. Bring the passport back to the nature center after you’ve hiked 2, 5, 8, and 12 trails, and you’ll earn a prize that you can use on your next trail adventure. (On Passport III, come back after you’ve hiked 8 and 12 hikes).
4. If you complete all 16 hikes in any passport, we’ll have something extra special for you.

Circling Fenton Lake State Park between Bernalillo, Cuba and Los Alamos, The Jemez Mountain Trail is a beautiful drive full of the courageous history of the Jemez people and surrounded by some of the most stunning scenery in the southwest. The Jemez Mountain Trail starts at the Coronado Monument in Bernalillo and encompasses the Jemez State Monument, Valles Caldera Preserve and finishes at Bandelier National Monument. It is filled with many opportunities for hiking, fishing, camping, cross-country skiing, or visiting natural hot springs.
A gem exists in northern New Mexico, where the sun shines 300 days a year and you can often ski without a jacket.
Pajarito Mountain has a base elevation of 9,200 feet above sea level, and a top elevation of 10,400 feet. The lodge is located on the eastern slopes of the Jemez Mountains near Los Alamos.
Pajarito Mountain has 44 trails, 280 ski-able acres (not including the tree skiing), and 1,200 feet of vertical drop — plenty to keep skiers and boarders busy. It boasts six chairlifts including three doubles, one triple, one quad, and one conveyor. Pajarito’s terrain includes miles of groomed trails, bump runs and glade skiing. With its Rio Grande valley views, well-known tree skiing and bump runs, fabulous terrain park, lack of lift lines and fabulous weather, Pajarito may be New Mexico’s best-kept skiing secret!

Manhattan Project National Historical Park tells the complex story of one of the most transformative events of the 20th Century. The Manhattan Project ushered in the nuclear age with the development of the world’s first atomic bombs. The project started in 1942 and Los Alamos was one of three secret cities of the Manhattan Project, the other two being located in Hanford, Washington and Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The United States dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the waning days of World War II – forever changing the world.
Stop at the park’s visitor center for an introduction to the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos, a National Park Service Passport Stamp, and free walking tour maps.
Volcanic eruptions created the 13-mile-wide circular depression now known as the Valles Caldera. The preserve is known for its huge mountain meadows, abundant wildlife, and meandering streams. The area also preserves the homeland of ancestral native peoples and a rich ranching history. Whether you are enjoying a groomed trail in a developed area or venturing into the backcountry, remember you are traveling in an environment with unpredictable wildlife and changing weather conditions. Be sure to layer up with insulating, waterproof clothing, wear sunglasses, use sunscreen and carry water. With a little bit of preparation, many exciting activities await you.
Valles Caldera National Preserve is a fee park; however, at this time the entrance fee is being waived. While the entrance fee is being waived, Valles Caldera will not be able to sell or issue passes.
Up to 35 backcountry vehicle permits will be available each day during the summer season (May - Oct) as conditions allow. No permit is needed to visit the Entrance Station, or to hike and bike.
Visitors can check out a self-guided booklet from the entrance station for the 1.5-mile La Jara Trail and the 1-mile Pond Trail.
During Regular Park Hours, Check in at the Entrance Station
Alamos County we often live or play in habitats used by these predators. They can at times be dangerous; however, with a better understanding of these animals, we can coexist.
If you choose to live in large predator country, make sure you do not contribute to their becoming a problem. Most predators with residential areas within their habitat do not cause any damage. If a predator doesn’t find abundant food, it will move on. Reduce the risk by following these simple precautions:
n Closely supervise children, especially during early morning and evening hours;
n Structure landscapes to eliminate hiding cover for predators;
n Install outside lighting, preferably with motion sensors;
n Close off open spaces below porches and decks;
n Do not plant non-native shrubs that attract prey;
n Do not feed pets outside, and bring pets in at night;
n Store all garbage securely.
There are no specific rules for encounters with a large predator. In most cases, the animal will detect you first and leave the area. If you do encounter one, here are some tips:
n Stay calm;
n Stop;
n Do all you can to appear larger;
n Never approach;
n Watch for young;
n Convince it you’re not prey by speaking loudly and firmly;
n Arm yourself with a large stick, throw rocks or sticks; and
n If necessary, fight back.
For more detailed tips and information about what to do when living with large predators or when encountering a large predator, visit the New Mexico Game & Fish website at www.lacnm.com/NMGF
