A Letter from Community Services It’s winter in Los Alamos... For those that love the sweet kiss of a snowflake falling from the sky to those that prefer the warmth of a fireplace or family and friends, Los Alamos is full of fun ways to stay connected during this season. This Activity Guide highlights the bountiful ways to stay in touch, learn something and stay active during the winter season. This book is full of indoor and outdoor activities for the entire family. If the outdoors are you passion look for the activities at the ice rink or Pajarito Mountain. If indoors is you passion look at the Walkup Aquatic Center opportunities and don’t forget the Leisure Lagoon is now open on Saturdays. Looking for activities to stimulate the mind check out the library offerings or an art class with Los Alamos Arts Center. Our community really has something for everyone and it shows in this guide. Social Services is working with state, regional, and local partners to mitigate the Fentanyl affects. Our Social Services division can assist with locating regional professionals for treatment or just knowledge on the signs of use. The team can provide you or your group with NARCAN training and provide product. This additional piece of the first aid kit may help you save a life. We know that the holiday season is not festive for all, so if life has thrown you a challenge we are also here to assist. The Social Services Division and our community partners are here to help smooth out the bumps from life. We are here to assist in many of these challenge. These challenges may include mental health, economic hardship or other life challenges the seem insurmountable today. We encourage anyone to connect with Social Services to explore the resources they have in order to assist you. I am sure you will find something to enjoy as you “Discover LA Today”. Community Services Current Projects ADA Audit and Transition Plan Completed

The County Community Services Department (CSD) is utilizing a consultant to perform an ADA Audit and develop a Transition Plan. The ADA Audit and Transition Plan is a federal requirement to identify gaps in outdoor recreation amenities the create barriers to use by those with disabilities. The project will use a consultant to perform a physical audit, review and inspection of all outdoor public spaces of Los Alamos County for compliance with Title II and Title III requirements of the Act. In addition, public comment and input will be gathered to further identify barriers to access to these items. The audit findings and public process are used to create prioritized short, mid, and long-term transition plan to bring any out of compliance items into compliance.

The athletic field maintenance was a topic during the development of the 2023 Integrated Master Plan, as such funding was allocated in FY24 budget to begin renovation the athletic fields. The first fields in the mix will be Daria Jones Field, Hope Field and Bomber Field. This project is anticipated to starting the summer of 2024. The project will consist of leveling the playing surfaces, new turf, laser grade and revitalize the infield and adjust the irrigation heads.

As a recommendation from the 2023 Integrated Master Plan the County is reviewing, combining, and updating several trail and open space documents into a single guiding “Trail and Open Space Management Plan”. This plan will be based on the 2022 Trailhead Assessment Plan, 2009 Trail Management Plan (revised 2022), 2013 Los Alamos Community Trail Plan, 2015 Open Space Management Plan, 2023 Restoration Feasibility Assessment, 2022 Los Alamos Americans with Disabilities Plan and the 2023 Integrated Master Plan. This process will have several opportunities for community feedback and participation in the process. The result is to have a single guiding document for the community as look to the future for managing our trails and open space so all users and abilities can enjoy our natural environment. Be on the lookout for opportunities to participate this winter.
The County Community Services Department (CSD) is using professional consulting service to assist in the development of an Integrated Community Services Master Plan. This plan will identify and assess existing programs, services, facilities, gaps, and look at future needs, and then integrate these findings into an actionable plan among the key areas of parks, cultural services, social services, recreation, open space, trails, and library. The desire is to produce a 7 to 10-year road map to systematically invest, improve programs and services, establish best practices, prioritize needs of the community to continuously improve the department, divisions and quality of life in our community.
Playground Renovation - 37th Street and Pinon (Rocket) Park Playground Currently in

These two playgrounds are in the process now of renovations. The LAC is seeking feedback from focus groups in the desires for the two playgrounds. Both of these were identified in the level of service and ADA Audit as need to be renovated. A key focus is on the accessibility ad inclusivity of these playgrounds. 6

This project will begin a significant upgrade of athletic courts in the community. The North Mesa Courts will be demolished and rebuilt from the ground up. We will start with a new base that is more stable and allow for a better playing experience. We expect to change at least one court into a tennis court as part of this process. The East Court Basketball Court needs attention as well. We are hoping to have these projects moving forward by net spring. The courts will be updated to meet ADA requirements so that all users in our community feel welcomed and can enjoy the amenities.
Underutilized Amenities - Tennis Courts & Playlots
Phase 1: Includes assembly of design drawings and construction documents for improvements to golf features on Holes 4 through 18, to include tees, bunkers, greens, permanent restrooms, targeted cart path upgrades and deferred maintenance. Phase 2: Includes development of several design concept options for improving Holes 1 through 3, reconfiguring the driving range to improve safety and minimize or eliminate the use of safety netting, and other improvements such as practice area and cart path upgrades.

The Community Services Department is looking at the use of two tennis courts, one handball wall, and two playlots within Los Alamos County to see if they are the best facility use for the community. We are collecting survey responses for each location during the month of September. Each survey provides a shot description of the facility and a picture. According to the National Park and Recreation Association Performance Review which was benchmarked during the development of the Integrated Master Plan, for similar community populations Los Alamos County has an excess of 11 courts and 14 playgrounds. The North Mesa Courts are scheduled for demolition and rebuild in the summer of 2024.

Los Alamos County is seeking design and construction services for a Bicycle Moto-Cross (BMX) Track which will require sanctioning by USA BMX. The track will be built on County owned property, located at North Mesa Park Road, on top of the existing facility. This is a design-build project, the designbuild team shall include, a state licensed engineer or architect, and a contractor properly licensed in New Mexico for the type of work required. The vendor will seek stakeholder and user group input for three options on the BMX track.

Ice Rink - Temporary Chiller Completed

The existing chiller is reaching the limit of its expected lifecycle (21 out of 25 years of service) and is already presenting malfunctions. In its current condition, the existing chiller cannot be expected to make a skating ice sheet in a reliable manner. The Public Works department is currently working on replacing the existing chiller with a new one. However, the new chiller is not an off-the-shelf product and will not be available for the 2023-2024 winter season. The time to bring a new replacement chiller is almost one year from the date of contracting with the chiller manufacturer. This long timeline results from factors intrinsic to the acquisition of a custom-built chiller. Namely, 1) the chiller is custom designed for the Los Alamos ice rink, 2) several chiller components are custom-built (long lead times), and 3) manufacturing time. The project here presented is the procurement of rental and installation of a temporary chiller for the 2023-2024 winter season. In this manner, the Ice Rink and the County will continue to offer public skating, hockey, and skating to the Los Alamos public.

The rink offers public skating, hockey, and skating lessons from mid-November through February. Join us to watch your local Moms, Dads, brothers and Sisters take part in a 3 day Tournament as they play other teams from not only New Mexico, but other states including Colorado, Texas, Arizona, Massachusetts, Utah and counting. Game times TBA after the team sign up deadline.
An annual tournament hosting teams of Mites and teams of Mini Mites ranging in age from 4 to 7 years of age and coming not only from New Mexico, but from Colorado and Texas as well to play in their very own Tournament. 4 Teams play on the ice at once! Ballroom Dancing Mondays
This program is composed of beginning and experienced dancers, and the main focus is to have fun, while learning and practicing to dance better. There is a variety of teachers from Los Alamos, some who have competed in competitive Ballroom and Latin Dance at the University level and who take care to offer lessons for a range of dance abilities. Waltz, Tango, West Coast Swing, East Coast Swing, Rumba, Foxtrot, Quickstep have been some of the dances they have focused on, with the possibility of more on the horizon. Generally this group spends one or two months focusing on one particular dance. As a martial art, Tae Kwon Do is popular with people of both genders and of many ages. Physically, tae kwon do develops strength, speed, balance, flexibility, and stamina. Session holders will be allowed entry into building 10 minutes prior to session. Deep Water Fun & Fitness: Zero impact, comfortably paced class that uses the water’s resistance to improve your fitness, flexibility, range of motion, strength, and balance. Therapy Fun & Fitness: Low impact, warm-water class held in the therapy pool. Includes working on range of motion, toning, stretching and balance. Participants with orthopedic concerns, arthritis, asthma and other conditions have found this class to be beneficial. The maximum class size is 18 students. WaterWorks!: A low impact, but effective water aerobics class designed to improve flexibility, range of motion, strength, muscle tone and cardiovascular endurance while using the resistance of the water to cushion the feet, knees and back. May use equipment including noodles, belts, bands and boards. Water shoes recommended. Aqua Zumba: Splashing, stretching, twisting – even shouting, laughing, hooting, and hollering! Salsa, Merengue, Disco, and more in chest deep water for a great low impact but challenging workout. Integrating the Zumba philosophy with traditional aquatic fitness, Aqua Zumba classes blend it all together into a workout that's cardio-conditioning, and body-toning. Water shoes recommended. Stand Up Paddle Board Yoga (SUP): Take your fitness routine to the mat -- a floating mat. SUP Yoga is a combination of paddleboarding and yoga practice. It challenges you to find another level of balance and focus your mind, all while floating atop the water. Think it sounds hard? Take a deep, centering breath; it's easier than you think, and perfect for both yoga and paddleboarding newbies.

Aquatic Center Programs - Ongoing
Aquatic exercise promotes and enhances physical and mental fitness. The water’s unique properties allow the pool to provide an environment for people of all abilities. Buoyancy creates a reduced impact that is easier on joints and water resistance challenges the muscles. The beauty of water is the ability to offer aerobic activity, resistance training and flexibility all at the same time. Water is thicker than air, so muscles get stronger.
Practice time for boaters using canoes, kayaks and rafts. The doors open half an hour earlier for boat cleaning before entry. All watercraft must be rinsed off on the patio prior to pool entry. Boaters must provide their own boats. All participants must have a wristband from the front desk before entering the pool. Life jackets are recommended for participants.

Enjoy a movie while floating in the main pool. The water is warmer than usual and participants can enjoy the movie while floating in the shallow end or lounging in the training room. To participate in the Water Safety Instructor Course, individuals must: • Be at least 16 years of age on or before the final day of class • Demonstrate the ability to perform the following swimming skills: 1. Swim the following strokes with proficiency • Front Crawl - 25 yards • Back Crawl - 25 yards • Breaststroke - 25 yards • Elementary Backstroke - 25 yards • Butterfly – 15 yards 2. Join on of PEEC's astronomers for an open house in the planetarium every Wednesday. They will give a 15-minute sky show, then answer questions, and take requests from attendees!
This is a fun program to get families outside, exploring our beautiful trails together. Los Alamos County, Bandelier, the Santa Fe National Forest, and the Valles Caldera have so many great trails, and now, thanks to support from the Delle Foundation, Clif Bar Family Foundation, Kate Svitek Memorial Foundation, and George and Helen Cowan Trust, we’re giving you an easy way to discover them. Here’s how it works:

Nutcracker on "The Hill" December 1 - 3
Directed by Jonathan Guise, Nutcracker on "The Hill" is a Los Alamos twist on the classic Nutcracker tale where characters from the Manhattan project dance through traditional Tchaikovsky music and settings. A collaboration between Dance Arts Los Alamos and the Los Alamos Historical Society, Nutcracker on "The Hill" is the winner of the 2022 Historical Society of New Mexico Dorothy Woodward Award and has become a local tradition in Northern New Mexico.

SANTA FE NATIONAL FOREST Some of the finest mountain scenery in the Southwest is found in the 1.6-million-acre Santa Fe National Forest. Here, you can find the headwaters of Pecos, Jemez, and Gallinas Rivers; mountain streams; lakes; and trout fishing. Travel into the Dome Wilderness via pack trips, saddle, or on 1,000 miles of hiking trails. Consider turkey, elk, deer, and bear hunting, or visit one of many nearby Indian pueblos, Spanish missions, and Indian ruins.

PAJARITO MOUNTAIN A gem exists in northern New Mexico, where the sun shines 300 days a year and you can often ski with a jacket. Pajarito Mountain has a base elevation of 9,200 feet above sea level, and a top elevation of 10,400 feet. The lodge is located on the eastern slopes of the Jemez Mountains near Los Alamos. Pajarito Mountain has 40 trails, 300 ski-able acres (not including the tree skiing), and 1,200 feet of vertical drop — plenty to keep skiers and boarders busy. It boasts five chairlifts including three doubles, one triple and a quad. Pajarito’s terrain includes miles of groomed trails, bump runs and glade skiing. With its Rio Grande valley views, well-known tree skiing and bump runs, fabulous terrain park, lack of lift lines and fabulous weather, Pajarito may be New Mexico’s best-kept skiing secret!

The Jemez Mountain Trail starts at the Coronado Monument in Bernalillo and encompasses the Jemez State Monument, Valles Caldera Preserve and finishes at Bandelier National Monument. BANDELIER NATIONAL MONUMENT Bandelier National Monument protects more than 33,000 acres of rugged but beautiful canyon and mesa country as well as evidence of a human presence here going back more than 11,000 years. Petroglyphs, dwellings carved into the soft rock cliffs, and standing masonry walls pay tribute to the early days of a culture that still survives in the surrounding communities.
Admission & Entry Permits Bandelier Annual Pass - $45 Valid for one year from month of purchase. Admits purchaser and passengers in a single, private, non-commercial vehicle, or the pass holder and his/her immediate family when entry is by other means (foot, bicycle).

MANHATTAN PROJECT NATIONAL HISTORIC PARK Manhattan Project National Historical Park tells the complex story of one of the most transformative events of the 20th Century. The Manhattan Project ushered in the nuclear age with the development of the world’s first atomic bombs. The project started in 1942 and Los Alamos was one of three secret cities of the Manhattan Project, the other two being located in Hanford, Washington and Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The United States dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the waning days of World War II – forever changing the world. Stop at the park’s visitor center for an introduction to the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos and talk with Rangers and volunteers, stamp your National Park Service Passport book, join free walking tours, and pick up a Junior Ranger book.
VALLES CALDERA NATIONAL PRESERVE Volcanic eruptions created the 13-mile-wide circular depression now known as the Valles Caldera. The preserve is known for its huge mountain meadows, abundant wildlife, and meandering streams. The area also preserves the homeland of ancestral native peoples and a rich ranching history. Whether you are enjoying a groomed trail in a developed area or venturing into the backcountry, remember you are traveling in an environment with unpredictable wildlife and changing weather conditions. Be sure to layer up with insulating, waterproof clothing, wear sunglasses, use sunscreen and carry water. With a little bit of preparation, many exciting activities await you.
Admission & Entry Permits Entrance Fee Waived Valles Caldera National Preserve is a fee park; however, at this time the entrance fee is being waived. While the entrance fee is being waived, Valles Caldera will not be able to sell or issue passes.
Backcountry Vehicle Permit Up to 35 backcountry vehicle permits will be available each day during the summer season (May - Oct) as conditions allow. No permit is needed to visit the Entrance Station, or to hike and bike.
Self-Guided Hikes Daily
Visitors can check out a self-guided booklet from the entrance station for the 1.5-mile La Jara Trail and the 1-mile Pond Trail. During Regular Park Hours, Check in at the Entrance Station

The Los Alamos JJAB provides youth and their families with programs and services that work to reduce youth risk behaviors, facilitate positive development, and build resiliency. Restorative Justice This is an approach to justice in which the response is an organized meeting between the victim and the youth offender. This approach aims to provide the offender the opportunity to take responsibility for their actions, to understand the harm they caused, give them an opportunity to redeem themselves, and discourage them from causing further harm. As a victim, this provides an active role in the process.
Resource Specialist Program The goal of this program is to surround the youth within our community with the support to empower them to thrive in school and life. We provide connections to services for mental health, basic life needs, academic needs, social skills, special needs, and MORE! The Resource Specialist builds relationships with healthcare providers and others to provide assessments, identify challenges, resources needed, and assist with case coordination.
One Circle These are structured support groups for boys (Boys Council) and girls (Girls Circle), ages 10-18. Sessions are guided by an adult facilitator, to promote a supportive environment and provide a safe place to speak about issues. Topics focus on improving decision-making, selfesteem, resilience, substance abuse, violence, bullying, definitions of success, and family & relationship dynamics.
Youth Mental Health First Aid Classes are offered throughout the year to adults who regularly interact with young people, ages 10-18. The course introduces common mental health challenges, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan on how to help young people in a crisis and non-crisis situation.
Sessions are typically held at the Los Alamos Elementary, Middle, and High Schools.

Las Cumbres Community Services is a non-profit organization, providing adult services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and child and family services for families facing social, emotional and developmental challenges. Las Cumbres is working for a world where everyone connects and thrives in their own community.
The Circle of Security® Parenting™ group is based on decades of research about how secure parent-child relationships can be supported and strengthened. Groups meet weekly for 10 weeks via Zoom. Family Friendly Hiking Trails Los Alamos County has many trails in its network, which will accommodate most skill and fitness levels. OPEN SPACE & TRAILS
The canyons and mesas in and around the County are linked by 100+ miles of trail network. Hikers and runners, horseback riders, mountain bikers, and other trail users delight in the variety to choose from. The trails offer a quick escape from the busy pace in town, a way to commute to work, an easy stroll or a physical challenge, and a chance to observe wildlife or soak in the views.

Located on the eastern flank of the Jemez Mountains, Los Alamos enjoys a mountain backdrop amid the orange cliffs of the Pajarito Plateau. The town spans three miles of the plateau, interrupted by deeply incised canyons that offer natural escapes within the town’s limits. White Rock lies on the edge of the 1,000-foot deep White Rock Canyon, carved by the Rio Grande.

Located on Barranca Mesa, this park offers a pavilion, tennis courts, soccer fields, picnic tables, shade trees, restrooms and a play lot.
Looking for a place to take your dogs where they can interact and socialize with other dogs? Los Alamos County has three dog parks where canine companions can run off-leash and engage in some canine interaction. All parks are fenced in, have water, benches, waste bags and garbage cans. Dogs must be friendly and current on vaccinations.
East Park
Overlook Park: 580 Overlook Rd., White Rock. East of the baseball fields - Some shade and grass.
North Mesa Picnic Grounds
East Park: 300 East Rd., Los Alamos. North of the playlot toward the canyon rim. North Mesa: Located near the intersection of San Ildefonso and North Mesa Park Rd. Shade, water and dirt surfaces.
Disc Golf Courses
This 5-acre park is located in a ponderosa pine forest, and has three large and one small picnic pavilions, restrooms, picnic tables, and a 9-hole disc golf course. There is plenty of shade in the cool pines and the county trail network is nearby.
Overlook Park
Los Alamos: 9-hole disc golf course situated among the trees and vegetation of North Mesa Picnic Grounds.
Located in White Rock, the park contains many amenities including a wheelchair-accessible scenic overlook of White Rock Canyon, the Rio Grande, Remote Control Car Track, and the mountainous country to the East. With spectacular views and more than adequate space, it is a popular venue for soccer, softball, and baseball as well as special events.

Ashley Pond Park A downtown landmark dating back to ranch-school days, Ashley Pond Park was originally a natural depression. It is named after the founder of the Los Alamos Ranch School, Ashley Pond, and is a cherished place for walks, picnics, concerts, events and more. Amenities include a stage, restrooms, waterfall feature, boardwalks and wetlands.

This park plays host to a picnic pavilion, basketball court and miniature golf course made from recycled playground equipment including a Cinderella carriage, a submarine, and a Conestoga wagon.
Piñon Park in White Rock has a large picnic pavilion, a splash pad, tennis courts, a play lot, a skateboard park, 9-hole disc golf course, and restrooms.
Rover Park In White Rock, Rover Park has a play lot, a picnic pavilion, shade trees, picnic tables, a large open area, tennis courts, a beach volleyball court, and restrooms.

Shoshin Ryu Jiu-Jitsu
Kathak is an East Indian classical dance that involves combinations of hand and foot movements set to a combination of beats. The class covers hand-foot coordination, footwork, choreography, self-discipline and Indian culture through an artistic form of physical exercise.
Shoshin Ryu Jiu-jitsu is a dynamic, Japanese based martial art that meets the self-defense challenges of the times as well as honors the spirit of previous generations.

Fencing
Climbing Wall
This course covers basic fencing strategies and footwork. The beginning/ intermediate class is for participants with little or no experience. The advanced class is for competitive fencers. Instruction will cover use of the foil, strip rules, judging and directing.
The YMCA's indoor climbing wall is a 30’ by 10’ L-configuration at 32’ tall and a climbing wall monitor is always on duty during open climb hours that can assist climbers in safety training, introduction to climbing etiquette and procedures, and belaying.

Roller derby is a contact sport played by two teams on roller skates, on an elliptical track and is one of the most rapidly growing sports in the country. Suitable for ages 9 - 18.
The Sheriff’s Posse organizes a monthly cowboy breakfast. Six of the yearly breakfasts benefit the Sheriff’s posse organization, while the proceeds from the other six benefit local non-profit organizations.
