A Letter from Community Services It’s spring in Los Alamos...

If the seasons held a popularity contest, spring would win. The days start getting longer, which means going outside becomes easier and more inviting. Flowers start blooming, grass starts growing, and leaves start filling in trees. As our world goes through this outdoor upgrade of sorts, the forces of nature reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. A little photosynthesis makes a big difference when it comes to carbon emissions! Spring also makes us feel better. According to a University of Michigan study, being outside for at least half an hour on warm, sunny spring days results in better mood and improved memory. Those are just a few of the many positive benefits of spring.

The Community Services Department of Los Alamos County wants to expand its list of benefits by offering you plenty of options for getting out and enjoying spring. We’re expecting lots of activity in our many parks and trails in and around Los Alamos. Did you know you can reserve park pavilions for private parties? Our long-standing Friday night concert series will kick-off a week before Memorial Day weekend—the perfect way to start thinking about plans for the long weekend with friends and family.

This guide lists an abundance of programs and events you won’t want to miss. Whatever your interests may be, we hope to see you get out, get active, and enjoy spring in Los Alamos!

Los Alamos County offers a course that's both fun & challenging.

Nestled at the base of the Jemez Mountains, atop the Pajarito Plateau, the Los Alamos County Golf Course offers a challenging 6,500 yard, par 72, 18-hole layout. The Golf Course, built in 1947 by the Atomic Energy Commission, is one of the oldest 18-hole golf courses in New Mexico. Panoramic vistas and clear, fresh mountain air at an elevation of 7,400 feet, provides a beautiful setting to enjoy spring and have a great experience.

Ongoing Programs Brown Bag Lunch Golf Clinic

Second Wednesday, April 13 - September 14 This clinic demonstrates basic golf skills and discusses various related topics, such as: putting, short game, full swing, course management, mental game management, practice strategies, and golf fitness. A different topic will be presented at each session.

All levels of golfers are welcome to attend. Equipment will be available for participants to practice the demonstrated skill. Contact the Golf Shop at (505) 662-8139 for details on upcoming sessions.

Bike to Work Day May 20

Two events in one day! Bike to work in the morning, and see us at Sullivan Field for free drinks, coffee, and snacks! Senior Talk

Senior Appreciation Night

High school staff talk to seniors about graduation day, hand out Caps and gowns, YMCA and REC staff talk to the grades about SAN Senior appreciation night and what to expect during the night.

Graduating seniors and a friend are invited to this annual celebration. The night begins with a BBQ at Fuller Lodge on Saturday evening, and ends with pancake breakfast at the Betty Ehart Senior Center.

Community Services Aquatic Center

Take a dip in this world-class, Olympic-size, high-altitude facility The Aquatic Center offers diverse activities for citizens and visitors of all ages, income levels, fitness levels, and interests, in safe and affordable recreation, instruction, fitness, competitive and therapeutic programs.

The Aquatic Center is known internationally as an excellent training facility for teams from around the United States and the world, including Japan, Belgium, New Zealand, Germany, and many more. Locally the Center supports private swim teams and the Los Alamos High School swimming and diving teams.

Benefits of Water Fitness Aquatic exercise promotes and enhances physical and mental fitness. The water’s unique properties allow the pool to provide an environment for people of all abilities. Buoyancy creates a reduced impact that is easier on joints and water resistance challenges the muscles. The beauty of water is the ability to offer aerobic activity, resistance training and flexibility all at the same time. Water is thicker than air, so muscles get stronger.

Fitness Classes Deep Water Fun & Fitness: Zero impact, comfortably paced class that uses the water’s resistance to improve your fitness, flexibility, range of motion, strength, and balance.

Therapy Fun & Fitness: Low impact, warm-water class held in the therapy pool. Includes working on range of motion, toning, stretching and balance. Participants with orthopedic concerns, arthritis, asthma and other conditions have found this class to be beneficial. The maximum class size is 18 students.

WaterWorks!: A low impact, but effective water aerobics class designed to improve flexibility, range of motion, strength, muscle tone and cardiovascular endurance while using the resistance of the water to cushion the feet, knees and back. May use equipment including noodles, belts, bands and boards. Water shoes recommended.

Aqua Zumba: Splashing, stretching, twisting – even shouting, laughing, hooting, and hollering! Salsa, Merengue, Disco, and more in chest deep water for a great low impact but challenging workout.

Integrating the Zumba philosophy with traditional aquatic fitness, Aqua Zumba classes blend it all together into a workout that's cardio-conditioning, and body-toning. Water shoes recommended.

Safety Note: All deep-water classes use flotation belts for support.

Swimming skills are not necessary. Participants should be comfortable in deep water. If you arrive late or leave class early please include time for an individual warm up and cool down. Students work at own level.

Half of the class is completed on-line at the participant’s discretion, and half of the class is conducted at the facility for practice testing.

The canyons and mesas in and around the County are linked by 100+ miles of trail network. Hikers and runners, horseback riders, mountain bikers, and other trail users delight in the variety to choose from. The trails offer a quick escape from the busy pace in town, a way to commute to work, an easy stroll or a physical challenge, and a chance to observe wildlife or soak in the views.

Using the Open Space & Trails Los Alamos County Open Space is open to non-motorized use only.

Hiking, running, horse travel, and mountain biking are permitted on County trails.

Resource Protection: All cultural resources such as Ancestral Pueblo room blocks, pot shards, petroglyphs, and historical artifacts are protected by Federal and State law. Let all cultural resources lie undisturbed.

Share the Trail: These are multi-use trails for pedestrians, equestrians, and bicyclists. Bicyclists should yield to all other users.

Dogs in Los Alamos County Open Space: All dogs must be on a leash within 100 yards of a trailhead. Dogs must be under voice and sight control at all times.

Safety: When exploring trails, always carry water, sunscreen, a hat, extra clothing, a flashlight, and a navigational aid.

Open Space & Trails - General Information

OPEN SPACE & TRAILS Located on the eastern flank of the Jemez Mountains, Los Alamos enjoys a mountain backdrop amid the orange cliffs of the Pajarito Plateau. The town spans three miles of the plateau, interrupted by deeply incised canyons that offer natural escapes within the town’s limits. White Rock lies on the edge of the 1,000-foot deep White Rock Canyon, carved by the Rio Grande.

Dog Parks Looking for a place to take your dogs where they can interact and socialize with other dogs? Los Alamos County has three dog parks where canine companions can run off-leash and engage in some canine interaction. All parks are fenced in, have water, benches, waste bags and garbage cans. Dogs must be friendly and current on vaccinations.

Overlook Park: 580 Overlook Rd., White Rock. East of the baseball fields - Some shade and grass.

Barranca Mesa Park Located on Barranca Mesa, this park offers a pavilion, tennis courts, soccer fields, picnic tables, shade trees, restrooms and a play lot.

East Park This park plays host to a picnic pavilion, basketball court and miniature golf course made from recycled playground equipment including a Cinderella carriage, a submarine, and a Conestoga wagon.

North Mesa Picnic Grounds This 5-acre park is located in a ponderosa pine forest, and has three large and one small picnic pavilions, restrooms, picnic tables, and a 9-hole disc golf course. There is plenty of shade in the cool pines and the county trail network is nearby.

Overlook Park Located in White Rock, the park contains many amenities including a wheelchair-accessible scenic overlook of White Rock Canyon, the Rio Grande, Remote Control Car Track, and the mountainous country to the East. With spectacular views and more than adequate space, it is a popular venue for soccer, softball, and baseball as well as special events.

Piñon Park

East Park: 300 East Rd., Los Alamos. North of the playlot toward the canyon rim.

Piñon Park in White Rock has a large picnic pavilion, a splash pad, tennis courts, a play lot, a skateboard park, 9-hole disc golf course, and restrooms.

North Mesa: Located near the intersection of San Ildefonso and North Mesa Park Rd. Shade, water and dirt surfaces.

Rover Park

Disc Golf Courses Open year round. Discs are available to rent at the Aquatic Center front desk during regular business hours.

Los Alamos: 9-hole disc golf course situated among the trees and vegetation of North Mesa Picnic Grounds.

White Rock: 9-hole disc golf course at Piñon Park in the natural piñon and juniper landscape.

In White Rock, Rover Park has a play lot, a picnic pavilion, shade trees, picnic tables, a large open area, tennis courts, a beach volleyball court, and restrooms.

Urban Park A 9-acre park in the heart of Los Alamos with lighted tennis courts, Urban Park has a picnic pavilion, sand volleyball pit, soccer, baseball field, a paved loop for walking or running, a basketball court, play lot, and restrooms.

Ashley Pond Park A downtown landmark dating back to ranch-school days, Ashley Pond Park was originally a natural depression. It is named after the founder of the Los Alamos Ranch School, Ashley Pond, and is a cherished place for walks, picnics, concerts, events and more.

Step inside the homestead-era Romero Cabin, visit an Ancestral Pueblo site, hear about the giants of 20th century physics who walked these streets, and learn how Bathtub Row got its name. Tickets include museum admission and are available at the Los Alamos History Museum Shop. Tickets are sold until tours are full with 16 visitors. Tours last approximately an hour and a half.

This is a woodcarving group/class for carvers at all levels. Power carving, wood burning, air brushing, and painting with acrylics will be taught. All tools are provided. We meet in the back classroom at Village Arts. Park around back and come to the rear entrance.

Passport to the Pajarito Plateau Ongoing

This is a fun program to get families outside, exploring our beautiful trails together. Los Alamos County, Bandelier, the Santa Fe National Forest, and the Valles Caldera have so many great trails, and now, thanks to support from the Delle Foundation, Clif Bar Family Foundation, Kate Svitek Memorial Foundation, and George and Helen Cowan Trust, we’re giving you an easy way to discover them.

Here’s how it works: 1.

As you hike the trails inside the passport, look for a wooden post or a bench with a small metal plate on it

2.

When you find the post, make a rubbing with your crayon rock

3.

Bring the passport back to the nature center after you’ve hiked 2, 5, 8, and 12 trails, and you’ll earn a prize that you can use on your next trail adventure. (On Passport III, come back after you’ve hiked 8 and 12 hikes).

4.

If you complete all 16 hikes in any passport, we’ll have something extra special for you.

Jemez Mountain Trail National Scenic Byway Circling Fenton Lake State Park between Bernalillo, Cuba and Los Alamos, The Jemez Mountain Trail is a beautiful drive full of the courageous history of the Jemez people and surrounded by some of the most stunning scenery in the southwest. The Jemez Mountain Trail starts at the Coronado Monument in Bernalillo and encompasses the Jemez State Monument, Valles Caldera Preserve and finishes at Bandelier National Monument. Jemez Mountains Amenities - General Information

Some of the finest mountain scenery in the Southwest is found in the 1.6-million-acre Santa Fe National Forest. Here, you can find the headwaters of Pecos, Jemez, and Gallinas Rivers; mountain streams; lakes; and trout fishing. Travel into the Dome Wilderness via pack trips, saddle, or on 1,000 miles of hiking trails. Consider turkey, elk, deer, and bear hunting, or visit one of many nearby Indian pueblos, Spanish missions, and Indian ruins.

PAJARITO MOUNTAIN A gem exists in northern New Mexico, where the sun shines 300 days a year and you can often ski with a jacket. Pajarito Mountain has a base elevation of 9,200 feet above sea level, and a top elevation of 10,400 feet. The lodge is located on the eastern slopes of the Jemez Mountains near Los Alamos.

Pajarito Mountain has 40 trails, 300 ski-able acres (not including the tree skiing), and 1,200 feet of vertical drop — plenty to keep skiers and boarders busy. It boasts five chairlifts including three doubles, one triple and a quad. Pajarito’s terrain includes miles of groomed trails, bump runs and glade skiing.

With its Rio Grande valley views, well-known tree skiing and bump runs, fabulous terrain park, lack of lift lines and fabulous weather, Pajarito may be New Mexico’s best-kept skiing secret!

MANHATTAN PROJECT NATIONAL HISTORIC PARK Manhattan Project National Historical Park tells the complex story of one of the most transformative events of the 20th Century. The Manhattan Project ushered in the nuclear age with the development of the world’s first atomic bombs. The project started in 1942 and Los Alamos was one of three secret cities of the Manhattan Project, the other two being located in Hanford, Washington and Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The United States dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the waning days of World War II – forever changing the world.

Stop at the park’s visitor center for an introduction to the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos, a National Park Service Passport Stamp, and free walking tour maps.

VALLES CALDERA NATIONAL PRESERVE Volcanic eruptions created the 13-mile-wide circular depression now known as the Valles Caldera. The preserve is known for its huge mountain meadows, abundant wildlife, and meandering streams. The area also preserves the homeland of ancestral native peoples and a rich ranching history. Whether you are enjoying a groomed trail in a developed area or venturing into the backcountry, remember you are traveling in an environment with unpredictable wildlife and changing weather conditions. Be sure to layer up with insulating, waterproof clothing, wear sunglasses, use sunscreen and carry water. With a little bit of preparation, many exciting activities await you.

Admission & Entry Permits Entrance Fee Waived Valles Caldera National Preserve is a fee park; however, at this time the entrance fee is being waived. While the entrance fee is being waived, Valles Caldera will not be able to sell or issue passes.

Backcountry Vehicle Permit Up to 35 backcountry vehicle permits will be available each day during the summer season (May - Oct) as conditions allow. No permit is needed to visit the Entrance Station, or to hike and bike.

Self-Guided Hikes Daily

Visitors can check out a self-guided booklet from the entrance station for the 1.5-mile La Jara Trail and the 1-mile Pond Trail.

Community Services Ice Rink

Its too warm for ice, but...

Built in 1936, the Los Alamos County Ice Rink is the only refrigerated, NHL regulation, outdoor ice rink in New Mexico. The rink offers public skating, hockey, and skating lessons from mid-November through February.

However, this spring, the Ice Rink facility is getting an upgrade, and the LA Derby Dames will be holding practices and games, with FREE admission starting in April.

LOS ALAMOS JJAB

Restorative Justice

The Los Alamos JJAB provides youth and their families with programs and services that work to reduce youth risk behaviors, facilitate positive development, and build resiliency. Their focus is on providing prevention, intervention, and diversion programs, by partnering with community organizations to collaborate, leverage, and coordinate resources.

All JJAB programs and services are FREE.

This is an approach to justice in which the response is an organized meeting between the victim and the youth offender. This approach aims to provide the offender the opportunity to take responsibility for their actions, to understand the harm they caused, give them an opportunity to redeem themselves, and discourage them from causing further harm.

As a victim, this provides an active role in the process.

Youth Mental Health First Aid

Resource Specialist Program

Classes are offered throughout the year to adults who regularly interact with young people, ages 10-18. The course introduces common mental health challenges, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan on how to help young people in a crisis and non-crisis situation.

The goal of this program is to surround the youth within our community with the support to empower them to thrive in school and life. We provide connections to services for mental health, basic life needs, academic needs, social skills, special needs, and MORE! The Resource Specialist builds relationships with healthcare providers and others to provide assessments, identify challenges, resources needed, and assist with case coordination.

One Circle These are structured support groups for boys (Boys Council) and girls (Girls Circle), ages 10-18. Sessions are guided by an adult facilitator, to promote a supportive environment and provide a safe place to speak about issues. Topics focus on improving decisionmaking, self-esteem, resilience, substance abuse, violence, bullying, definitions of success, and family & relationship dynamics.

Sessions are typically held at the Los Alamos Elementary, Middle, and High Schools.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library This Los Alamos affiliate program mails FREE books every month to children residing in Los Alamos County, from birth to age 5. It promotes and supports literacy, the love of reading, early age learning, and encourages adult-child engagement.

Restorative Yoga

This small group class (6 people max) is an excellent way to quiet the mind, calm the body and down regulate the nervous system. This class is designed with gentle floor based sequences using bolsters, blankets, and props that enable the practitioner to fully relax their muscles, slow down the mind, shift emotional patterns, bring ease to the breath, surrender into non-doing and tune into the nervous system’s healing capacity. No experience or props needed, everything will be provided.

Kathak is an East Indian classical dance that involves combinations of hand and foot movements set to a combination of beats. The class covers hand-foot coordination, footwork, choreography, self-discipline and Indian culture through an artistic form of physical exercise.

Los Alamos Sheriff’s Posse Pancake Breakfasts Monthly - 1st Sunday

The Sheriff’s Posse organizes a monthly cowboy breakfast. Six of the yearly breakfasts benefit the Sheriff’s posse organization, while the proceeds from the other six benefit local non-profit organizations.

Pelvic Floor Health for Women

Recycle Art Fair and Fashion Show

Join Jennifer Portnoy, DPT, ERYT500, as she shares ways yoga can help with women pelvic floor health. Combining yoga practice with pelvic floor exercises facilitates optimum health of the urinary, bowel, and reproductive systems by lengthening and strengthening the pelvic floor which in turn can greatly reduce and possibly eliminate urinary and fecal incontinence. Previous yoga experience not necessary.

Join the Family YMCA for a week of learning through play and art!

They will offer a safe and fun environment for kids ages 5-11, with crafts, science experiments, and games centered on our animal pals who live at ponds -the theme is POND LIFE! (Touching frogs is not required.)

Spring Little Youth Soccer April 11 - May 20

YMCA Little Youth Soccer is a 6-week introductory soccer program that will focus on developing coordination and learning the basic skills & rules of soccer. Practices are two days per week in the evenings in Los Alamos and White Rock. Teams of 6-8 players allow for easier coaching, and more practice time and more game time for players.

PAC 8 will be offering drone classes this spring for middle & high school aged students and elementary age 10 and older. There will also be classes for adults. In the classes, students will learn how to fly safely within drone regulations, and drone photography and videography.
