Winter is the perfect season to embrace traditions. Whether you grew up in Los Alamos or moved here last month, the activities and programs in this book are likely to remind you of your own family traditions. If you don’t have a history of traditions to reflect upon, it’s never too late to build some. We hope this guide may help you do that by revealing programs, activities, and events that you just might value enough to repeat in the years to come.
One popular event that has become a cherished tradition for many Los Alamos residents is the annual light parade up Central Avenue. It’s a wonderful kickoff to the season with dozens of light-adorned vehicles and floats making their way through downtown, followed by the lighting of the trees around Ashley Pond.
This community is full of outdoor enthusiasts who are anxious to get on the slopes at Pajarito Mountain for downhill skiing, as well as the Pajarito Nordic Ski Trail for cross country skiing and snowshoeing. We are anxiously awaiting snow so that we can welcome cross country skiers to the golf course for groomed trails in town for the second year in a row. Don’t forget about our outdoor ice rink! It will be open for skating mid-November through midFebruary. And if it’s just too cold out there, curling up under a blanket with a good book from our outstanding collection at the library is a pretty good way to spend a winter day.
Opportunities abound in this Winter Activities Guide so take some time to sit down with it and mark up your calendar You’ll find plenty of things to do in Los Alamos County. Maybe you’ll even start some new traditions that bring your friends and family together, create lasting memories, and allow you to celebrate the things that really matter in life.
Sincerely, Cory Styron Community Services Director**Please note: All events and programs within this booklet as subject to change due to COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions. Please contact the organizing entity for updated information**

Aquatic exercise promotes and enhances physical and mental fitness. The water’s unique properties allow the pool to provide an environment for people of all abilities. Buoyancy creates a reduced impact that is easier on joints and water resistance challenges the muscles. The beauty of water is the ability to offer aerobic activity, resistance training and flexibility all at the same time. Water is thicker than air, so muscles get stronger.
Deep Water Fun & Fitness: Zero impact, comfortably paced class that uses the water’s resistance to improve your fitness, flexibility, range of motion, strength, and balance.
Therapy Fun & Fitness: Low impact, warm-water class held in the therapy pool. Includes working on range of motion, toning, stretching and balance. Participants with orthopedic concerns, arthritis, asthma and other conditions have found this class to be beneficial. The maximum class size is 18 students.
WaterWorks!: A low impact, but effective water aerobics class designed to improve flexibility, range of motion, strength, muscle tone and cardiovascular endurance while using the resistance of the water to cushion the feet, knees and back. May use equipment including noodles, belts, bands and boards. Water shoes recommended.
Aqua Zumba: Splashing, stretching, twisting – even shouting, laughing, hooting, and hollering! Salsa, Merengue, Disco, and more in chest deep water for a great low impact but challenging workout. Integrating the Zumba philosophy with traditional aquatic fitness, Aqua Zumba classes blend it all together into a workout that's cardioconditioning, and body-toning. Water shoes recommended.
Safety Note: All deep-water classes use flotation belts for support. Swimming skills are not necessary. Participants should be comfortable in deep water. If you arrive late or leave class early please include time for an individual warm up and cool down. Students work at own level.

Please join the library for this very special 2-part program in which pianist Peter Pesic will perform Fauré's Complete Nocturnes in two concerts. Gabriel Fauré is one of the most beloved of twentiethcentury composers, yet many of his compositions are rarely heard. His thirteen nocturnes for piano span the whole of his creative life, from early romanticism to a more modern style as he lost his hearing and faced the tragedies of the First World War. Rarely heard in concert, the whole set forms a self-portrait of a great composer. Pesic is Musician-in-Residence and Tutor Emeritus at St. John’s College in Santa Fe.

Approximately 60 interactive exhibits trace the history of the WWII Manhattan Project, highlight LANL’s current and historic research projects related to defense and technology, and focus on laboratory research related to national and international economic, environmental, political, and social concerns.
The basis for the Farmers Market is that every New Mexico family deserves access to fresh food, and farmers should be able to stay on their land, keep water and seeds in production, and preserve agricultural knowledge. Supporting local growers, ranchers and food producers preserves cultural identity and traditions, along with creating valuable community gathering places. It also keeps important food dollars circulating in our hometowns where it is needed most.

This is a fun program to get families outside, exploring our beautiful trails together. Los Alamos County, Bandelier, the Santa Fe National Forest, and the Valles Caldera have so many great trails, and now, thanks to support from the Delle Foundation, Clif Bar Family Foundation, Kate Svitek Memorial Foundation, and George and Helen Cowan Trust, we’re giving you an easy way to discover them. Here’s how it works:
1. As you hike the trails inside the passport, look for a wooden post or a bench with a small metal plate on it.
2. When you find the post, make a rubbing with your crayon rock.
3. Bring the passport back to the nature center after you’ve hiked 2, 5, 8, and 12 trails, and you’ll earn a prize that you can use on your next trail adventure. (On Passport III, come back after you’ve hiked 8 and 12 hikes).
4. If you complete all 16 hikes in any passport, we’ll have something extra special for you.

Celebrating 30 Years of Dance in Los Alamos and White RockTheis always looking for new players. First organized in January of 1945 as the Los Alamos Civic Orchestra, residents of our community and nearby areas have been making music together for over 70 years! While our name has changed from the Civic Orchestra to the Sinfonietta, and now to the Symphony Orchestra, we still enjoy getting together for weekly rehearsals and giving a few concerts each year. We ask each player for a $25 donation for each concert they perform in to help defray our rehearsal and concert expenses. Donations from the community at our free concerts help fund scholarships to local high school students each year.
If you play an instrument and are looking for a group to play with, please consider joining us. Send an e-mail to secretary@losalamossymphony.org and we will connect you with one of our section coordinators. We rehearse Monday evenings from 7-9 pm during the school year. Our next concert is Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022 at Crossroads Bible Church in Los Alamos. It will be fun and festive music to get back into playing regularly again.
Follow the QR code below to our website to get more information, or head over to https://losalamossymphony.org/ for more information and history about our group.

Some of the finest mountain scenery in the Southwest is found in the 1.6-million-acre Santa Fe National Forest. Here, you can find the headwaters of Pecos, Jemez, and Gallinas Rivers; mountain streams; lakes; and trout fishing. Travel into the Dome Wilderness via pack trips, saddle, or on 1,000 miles of hiking trails. Consider turkey, elk, deer, and bear hunting, or visit one of many nearby Indian pueblos, Spanish missions, and Indian ruins.
The Santa Fe National Forest offers beautiful camping and recreation areas that include high desert and forested landscapes on a range of elevations with primitive and developed campsites. Developed campgrounds offer a selection of amenities for users with RVs and tents. Many campgrounds are available by reservation:
• Jemez Falls Campground
• Paliza Family Campground
• Redondo Campground
• San Antonio Campground
• Vista Linda Campground
• Fenton Lake State Park Please visit recreation.gov for reservations.
Circling Fenton Lake State Park between Bernalillo, Cuba and Los Alamos, The Jemez Mountain Trail is a beautiful drive full of the courageous history of the Jemez people and surrounded by some of the most stunning scenery in the southwest. The Jemez Mountain Trail starts at the Coronado Monument in Bernalillo and encompasses the Jemez State Monument, Valles Caldera Preserve and finishes at Bandelier National Monument. It is filled with many opportunities for hiking, fishing, camping, cross-country skiing, or visiting natural hot springs.
A gem exists in northern New Mexico, where the sun shines 300 days a year and you can often ski with a jacket. Pajarito Mountain has a base elevation of 9,200 feet above sea level, and a top elevation of 10,400 feet. The lodge is located on the eastern slopes of the Jemez Mountains near Los Alamos. Pajarito Mountain has 40 trails, 300 ski-able acres (not including the tree skiing), and 1,200 feet of vertical drop — plenty to keep skiers and boarders busy. It boasts five chairlifts including three doubles, one triple and a quad. Pajarito’s terrain includes miles of groomed trails, bump runs and glade skiing. With its Rio Grande valley views, well-known tree skiing and bump runs, fabulous terrain park, lack of lift lines and fabulous weather, Pajarito may be New Mexico’s best-kept skiing secret!
The Pajarito Mountain Café inside the cozy, mountain lodge delivers an authentic on-mountain dining experience. Enjoy a hearty breakfast, like a hand-held breakfast burrito, or a stick-to-your-ribs lunch, like Natalie’s legendary bacon green chile double cheeseburger. Please visit pajarito.ski for hours of operation

Manhattan Project National Historical Park tells the complex story of one of the most transformative events of the 20th Century. The Manhattan Project ushered in the nuclear age with the development of the world’s first atomic bombs. The project started in 1942 and Los Alamos was one of three secret cities of the Manhattan Project, the other two being located in Hanford, Washington and Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The United States dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the waning days of World War II – forever changing the world.
Stop at the park’s visitor center for an introduction to the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos, a National Park Service Passport Stamp, and free walking tour maps.
Volcanic eruptions created the 13-mile-wide circular depression now known as the Valles Caldera. The preserve is known for its huge mountain meadows, abundant wildlife, and meandering streams. The area also preserves the homeland of ancestral native peoples and a rich ranching history. Whether you are enjoying a groomed trail in a developed area or venturing into the backcountry, remember you are traveling in an environment with unpredictable wildlife and changing weather conditions. Be sure to layer up with insulating, waterproof clothing, wear sunglasses, use sunscreen and carry water. With a little bit of preparation, many exciting activities await you.
Valles Caldera National Preserve is a fee park; however, at this time the entrance fee is being waived. While the entrance fee is being waived, Valles Caldera will not be able to sell or issue passes.
Up to 35 backcountry vehicle permits will be available each day during the summer season (May - Oct) as conditions allow. No permit is needed to visit the Entrance Station, or to hike and bike.
Visitors can check out a self-guided booklet from the entrance station for the 1.5-mile La Jara Trail and the 1-mile Pond Trail.
During Regular Park Hours, Check in at the Entrance Station

This is an approach to justice in which the response is an organized meeting between the victim and the youth offender. This approach aims to provide the offender the opportunity to take responsibility for their actions, to understand the harm they caused, give them an opportunity to redeem themselves, and discourage them from causing further harm. As a victim, this provides an active role in the process.
The goal of this program is to surround the youth within our community with the support to empower them to thrive in school and life. We provide connections to services for mental health, basic life needs, academic needs, social skills, special needs, and MORE! The Resource Specialist builds relationships with healthcare providers and others to provide assessments, identify challenges, resources needed, and assist with case coordination.
These are structured support groups for boys (Boys Council) and girls (Girls Circle), ages 10-18. Located on the eastern flank of the Jemez Mountains, Los Alamos enjoys a mountain backdrop amid the orange cliffs of the Pajarito Plateau. The town spans three miles of the pla teau, interrupted by deeply incised canyons that offer natural escapes within the town’s limits. White Rock lies on the edge of the 1,000-foot deep White Rock Canyon, carved by the Rio Grande.
The canyons and mesas in and around the County are linked by 100+ miles of trail network. Hikers and runners, horseback riders, mountain bikers, and other trail users delight in the variety to choose from. The trails offer a quick escape from the busy pace in town, a way to commute to work, an easy stroll or a physical challenge, and a chance to observe wildlife or soak in the views.
Watch for the “Trailhead” signs along major roads throughout the County. Find more information about the County Trail Network on-line: losalamosnm.us - Click on “Recreation”
Los Alamos County Open Space is open to non-motorized use only. Hiking, running, horse travel, and mountain biking are permitted on County trails.
Resource Protection: All cultural resources such as Ancestral Pueblo room blocks, pot shards, petroglyphs, and historical artifacts are protected by Federal and State law. Let all cultural resources lie undisturbed.
Share the Trail: These are multi-use trails for pedestrians, equestrians, and bicyclists. Bicyclists should yield to all other users.
Dogs in Los Alamos County Open Space: All dogs must be on a leash within 100 yards of a trailhead. Dogs must be under voice and sight control at all times.
Safety: When exploring trails, always carry water, sunscreen, a hat, extra clothing, a flashlight, and a navigational aid.
Trailhead guides are available at major trailheads, the Los Alamos County Customer Care Center in the Municipal Building, the Los Alamos Nature Center, and on-line.
