Sejam muito bem-vindos a mais uma edição da revista WINK. Este oitavo número representa, tal como a simbologia que o envolve, a vitória e a prosperidade. Nele temos a honra de destacar mais um passo na nossa expansão empresarial com a recomendação das nossas Pousadas de Portugal e Hotéis Históricos pela Casa Real de Portugal.

Este reconhecimento é, sem dúvida alguma, um motivo de orgulho e honra, mas sobretudo um grande estímulo para continuarmos o nosso sustentado trabalho.

Destacamos ainda o enorme, mas aliciante, desafio de investimento na recuperação de espaços históricos em Portugal e no Estrangeiro.

Welcome to the latest edition of WINK magazine.

This eighth edition represents, just as the symbolism that surrounds it, victory and prosperity. In it we have the honour of highlighting yet another step in our business expansion, with the endorsement of our Pousadas de Portugal and our Historic Hotels by the Royal House of Portugal. This recognition is, without doubt, a great motivation to continue our work.

We also highlight the enormous but attractive investment challenge in the recovery of historic locations in Portugal and abroad. We emphasize not only the protection but especially the revival of world heritage, at risk of degradation and destruction, making it accessible without damaging its important historic and cultural wealth.

Motivated, once again, by your preference it is with great satisfaction that we share, in this edition, four new destinations with you: The Pousada de Óbidos, set in the medieval castle of Óbidos, was the first Pousada to be set in a National Heritage castle. I hereby invite you for a perfect weekend at this stunning Pousada. The Pestana Montevideo/ Jockey Club Restaurant, continuing in the area of heritage recovery, this is our most recent endeavour. This is the former Jockey Club in Uruguay’s capital (this edition’s cover) and is the first stage in its recovery - the opening of its noblest area as a luxury restaurant. The Pestana Buenos Aires, where we landed in 2004, is located on the World’s widest avenue.

It is considered one of Argentina’s best hotels by business travellers and those who visit the capital of Tango, a city full of cities and contrasts. In Madeira, Porto Santo, we finish off at home, where we are always ready to welcome you with open arms. The island where we still have our head office is without doubt a blessed place that knows how to preserve nature without forgetting about progress.

Our work is increasingly more intense but always focused on providing you with the best destinations and moments.

POUSADA & DESTINO I POUSADA & DESTINATION

Ó ÓBIDOS

Óbidos, do latim Ópido, significa cidadela ou cidade fortificada. Tomada aos Mouros em 1148, no reinado de D. Sancho I, Óbidos ficará para sempre na memória como a terra das Senhoras Rainhas. Tal é o encanto desta vila que todos os reis a ofereciam como dote de casamento às suas rainhas. No castelo, de cunho manuelino, tantas vezes lar Real, veio a nascer a primeira Pousada Histórica de Portugal. Com autoria do arquiteto João Filipe Vaz, a adaptação do castelo para pousada fez nascer um sítio de rara beleza e conforto, que permite ao visitante sentarse na lareira da romântica sala de jantar, onde D. Leonor gostava de se dedicar à leitura, ou deslumbrar-se, com toda a realeza, com o verde vale que rodeia a vila de Óbidos, com o mar no horizonte.

Óbidos, from the Latin Ópido, means citadel or fortified city. Taken from the Moors in 1148, during the reign of D. Sancho I, Óbidos will always be remembered as the land of the Queens. The town is so enchanting that kings would offer it to their queens as a dowry. It was at the castle, of Manueline architectural style, so often a royal home, that the first Historic Pousada de Portugal was born. Designed by the architect João Filipe Vaz, the castle’s adaptation into a pousada gave birth to a place of rare beauty and comfort where guests can sit by the fire in the romantic dining room where D. Leonor used to like spend time reading, or to marvel at all the royalty, the green valley that surrounds the town of Óbidos, the sea on the horizon.

A Pousada do Castelo, inaugurada em 1951, conta com três suites com decoração medieval nas torres D. Fernando e D. Diniz e ainda nove quartos, cada um com um nome de rei ou rainha, todos recheados de bom-gosto. Sendo uma das sete maravilhas de Portugal, a Pousada do Castelo tem vindo a coleccionar elogios dos clientes que por aqui passam. É comum ouvir realçar a tranquilidade desta Pousada, a capacidade da equipa em fazer sentir especial cada cliente, a importância que é dada a cada pormenor e o romantismo do castelo, capaz de nos fazer sentir reis ou rainhas enquanto estivermos na Pousada do Castelo.

The Pousada do Castelo, inaugurated in 1951, has three suites with medieval decoration in the D. Fernando and D. Diniz towers and nine rooms, each named after a king or queen, all in very good taste. One of Portugal’s seven wonders, the Pousada do Castelo has been collecting praise from guests who spend time here. They often highlight the tranquillity of the Pousada, the staff ’s ability to make every guest feel special, the importance given to details and the castle’s romanticism. All of this makes us feel like kings or queens when we are at the Pousada do Castelo.

Quando sair da pousada para passear pela vila não deixe de experimentar uma das especialidades locais, a Ginginha, servida em copos de chocolate. Perca-se pelas ruelas de encantar, com muitos mistérios para desvendar, pelas igrejas que se transformaram em impressionantes livrarias e livrarias que, a par dos livros, vendem produtos biológicos.

Este é um destino para visitar o ano inteiro, tornando-se um local de “peregrinação” durante as festas de Natal, a Festa do Chocolate (fevereiro) e a Festa Medieval (julho).

When you leave the Pousada for a stroll around the village, make sure you try one of the local specialties, the “Ginginha”, served in cups made of chocolate. Lose yourself in the enchanting little back streets, full of mysteries to unveil, churches that are transformed into impressive book shops and book shops that, in addition to selling books, sell organic food. A destination to be visited throughout the year, it becomes a place of pilgrimage during the Christmas Festivities, The Chocolate Festival (February) and the Medieval Festival ( July).

Wink had a chat with HRH Dom Duarte, the Duke of Braganza, Head of the Royal House of Portugal and HRH Dona Isabel de Herédia, Duchess of Braganza. The setting chosen was the historical Pousada do Castelo in Óbidos.

WINK: O que significa ser atualmente o ser o chefe da Casa Real?

S.A.R. Dom Duarte: É uma grande responsabilidade perante os portugueses, perante a nossa família, os nossos filhos e as futuras gerações, mas também em relação a todos os países que partilharam a nossa história durante 500 anos e que hoje mantêm uma ligação forte à Família Real Portuguesa. Eu vejo isso em Angola, em Timor, na Guiné e em toda a parte sinto que existe essa ligação muito profunda. Por exemplo, em Moçambique e Angola, normalmente, sou tratado pela população por Muene Puto, que quer dizer Rei de Portugal.

WINK: What does it currently mean to be the Head of the Royal House?

HRH Dom Duarte: It’s a huge responsibility, not only towards the Portuguese people, our family, our children and future generations but also in relation to all the countries that have shared our history for 500 years and that nowadays have a strong connection with the Portuguese Royal Family. I see this in Angola, Timor and Guiné, everywhere I feel this very strong link. For example, in Mozambique and Angola, I’m usually known as Muene Puto by the population, which means King of Portugal.

Considera que Portugal estaria melhor se vigorasse uma Monarquia?

S.A.R. Dom Duarte: Temos de comparar as repúblicas europeias e no mundo com os países que têm reis e rainhas.

Entre as repúblicas há muitas, até há pouco tempo a maioria, não democráticas. Hoje em dia, felizmente, isso melhorou um pouco. Mas monarquias não democráticas são raras, haverá apenas alguns países árabes pouco democráticos para os nossos critérios. Se Portugal tivesse mantido a chefia de Estado Real, sem a revolução do 5 de Outubro de 1910, que causou muita violência e 11 anos de ditadura, podíamos ter evoluído

Do you think Portugal would be a better place if it were still a monarchy?

HRH Dom Duarte: We need to compare European and other republics in the world, to the countries that have kings and queens.

There are many, they were the majority up until recently, nondemocratic republics. Nowadays, happily, this has improved a little. However, non-democratic monarchs are rare, maybe there are just a few Arab countries that lack democracy by our standards. If Portugal had continued to be governed by a Royal State, without the 5 October 1910 revolution, which caused a lot of violence and 11 year’s dictatorship, we could have evolved democratically because we

democraticamente porque tínhamos uma democracia muito moderna para a nossa época. Por outro lado, não teria vindo a II República, através de nova revolução, que apesar da recuperação económica, foi um regime não democrático. Finalmente, uma terceira revolução republicana, em 74, que novamente causou graves problemas à economia, às pessoas, causou desastres absolutamente terríveis no antigo Ultramar onde demoraram dezenas de anos a recuperar a paz e a normalidade. Tudo isto foram desgraças que aconteceram devido à utopia de que o sistema republicano é mais progressivo ou mais justo do que o sistema monárquico. Enquanto isso, por exemplo, Espanha recuperou a democracia em seis meses, com o Rei, e as monarquias Europeias continuaram democráticas. Se compararmos o sucesso das monarquias com o insucesso da nossa República, aí está a resposta.

had a very modern democracy for the times. On the other hand, the second republic wouldn’t have taken place, a new revolution, which despite the economic recovery, was a non-democratic regime. Finally, a third republican revolution in ‘74, which once again caused serious problems to the economy, to people and caused absolutely terrible disasters in the former colonies and it took dozens of years to return to normality. All of this disgrace took place due to the utopia that the republic system is more progressive or fairer than the monarchical one. Meanwhile, for example, Spain regained its democracy in just six months, with the King and the northern European countries continued democratic. If we compare the success of the monarchs with the lack of success of our Republic, you have your answer.

How would you like to be known as?

HRH Dom Duarte: I don’t know, it will be known after my death.

Kings don’t choose what they want to be known as, if they did, D. Afonso II, the Fat Man, would never have chosen that name.

Com que cognome gostaria de ser reconhecido?

S.A.R. Dom Duarte: Não sei, isso só depois de morto se saberia.

Os Reis não escolhiam o cognome senão D. Afonso II, o Gordo, não teria escolhido esse cognome.

Quais são valores mais importantes que procuram transmitir aos vossos filhos?

S.A.R. Dom Duarte: Basicamente, procuramos transmitir o sentido de responsabilidade perante eles próprios, perante os portugueses e perante Deus. Qual é a nossa missão em vida?

Porque é que estamos cá? E o que temos de fazer para cumprir essa missão e sermos felizes? Só quem cumpre uma missão, com a sensação de que o faz bem feito, seja qual for essa missão, é que se sente realizado.

What are the most important values you try to pass on to your children?

HRH Dom Duarte: Basically we aim to transmit a sense of responsibility towards themselves, before the Portuguese and before God. What is our mission in life? Why are we here? What do we have to do to fulfil this mission and be happy? Only those who accomplish a mission, feeling that it has been well done, whatever it may be, will feel fulfilled.

Do you usually travel with your children, as a family?

HRH Dom Duarte: Yes, we usually travel as a family.

Costumam viajar com os vossos filhos, em família?

S.A.R. Dom Duarte: Sim, costumamos viajar em família.

What are your favourite destinations?

HRH Dom Duarte: We have two types of destinations, the countries that we share a history with, for example we were in Timor this summer, last year we were in Cape Verde and I hope to visit the other countries that we have history in common with in the future. Then there are the countries where we have family and friends in Europe. Also Brazil, where Isabel lived for many years and where she has lots of friends and where I have many cousins as my mother is Brazilian.

Quais são os vossos destinos preferidos?

S.A.R. Dom Duarte: Temos dois tipos de destinos, os países que têm uma história em comum connosco, por exemplo este verão estivemos em Timor, no ano passado estivemos em Cabo Verde e espero no futuro visitar os outros países com uma história comum. Há ainda países onde temos familiares e amigos, na Europa. Também o Brasil, onde a Isabel viveu muitos anos e tem muitos amigos, e eu tenho muitos primos pois a minha Mãe é Brasileira.

A vossa família tem alguma ligação especial a Óbidos, já que durante séculos a vila foi dote de casamento das rainhas portuguesas?

S.A.R. D. Isabel de Herédia: Sempre gostei muito da vila de Óbidos, sempre a visitei, acho que é um cartão-de-visita de Portugal, quando se vem aqui sente-se o que é que isto foi… gosto da forma como está preservada.

S.A.R. Dom Duarte: Tenho de elogiar as Administrações Municipais de Óbidos porque souberam adaptar a vila para as necessidades do turismo e dos habitantes, preservando a

Does your family have a special connection with Óbidos, as it was the wedding gift of Portuguese queens for centuries?

HRH Dona Isabel: I’ve always loved the town of Óbidos, I’ve always visited it, I think it’s a showcase of Portugal, when you come here you can feel what it used to be… I like the way it has been preserved.

HRH Dom Duarte: We must praise the Óbidos Municipal Authorities because they adapted the town to the needs of tourism and its inhabitants, preserving its beauty and identity. That’s rare in

sua beleza e a sua identidade. Isto é raro, em Portugal. Muitas vezes são os próprios hotéis que estragam a paisagem de uma terra, ou as Câmaras que estragam a paisagem, autorizando construções não integradas nessa paisagem. Óbidos tem um mérito extraordinário porque não foi só a vila que foi preservada, a paisagem à volta também tem sido protegida,.

Portugal. Often it’s the hotels themselves that destroy the landscape, or the Town Halls that authorise constructions that are not well integrated into the landscape. Óbidos has extraordinary merit because it isn’t just the town that has been preserved, the surrounding nature has been too.

The Royal House of Portugal granted its full support to the Pousadas de Portugal. Although it is common to do this in some European countries, it’s less frequent here. What motivated this distinction?

HRH Dom Duarte: One of the roles Royal Houses may have is to promote the good things about a country. The Pousadas have always been, but particularly now, a means of promoting Portuguese high quality across the world. It was a very brave thing for the Pestana Group to do, taking on the Pousadas de Portugal because it’s difficult to make such small hotels profitable, but they are an image of a Portuguese brand that is worth much more than the business itself.

A Casa Real Portuguesa concedeu o alto patrocinio às Pousadas de Portugal. Ainda que seja uma prática corrente em alguns países europeus em Portugal é menos frequente. O que motivou esta distinção?

S.A.R. Dom Duarte: Um dos papéis que as Casas Reais podem ter é o de promover o que de bom e de bem se faz no país. E realmente, as Pousadas sempre, mas particularmente agora, têm sido um modelo de promoção da qualidade portuguesa no mundo.

Foi um ato de grande coragem do Grupo Pestana assumir as Pousadas de Portugal, porque é difícil de rentabilizar hotéis tão pequeninos, mas é uma imagem de marca de Portugal que vale muito mais do que o negócio em si.

Do you think the Pestana Group has done a good job with the Pousadas de Portugal?

HRH Dom Duarte: Yes, there’s no doubt about that. I believe that the quality of the service at the Pousadas has been improving and all the reconstruction work has been excellent. In addition to that, the Pousadas have been strongly promoted, with other of the Group’s hotels leading their guests to visit the Pousadas.

Acha que o Grupo Pestana tem feito um bom trabalho nas Pousadas de Portugal?

S.A.R. Dom Duarte: Sim, sem dúvida, acho que a qualidade do serviço das Pousadas tem vindo a melhorar e todo o trabalho de reconstrução tem sido excelente.

Além disso, tem-se estimulado bastante a frequência levando a que os hotéis do grupo encaminhem os clientes para as Pousadas.

What do you value most in a hotel?

HRH Dom Duarte: A room’s comfort, silence and tranquillity, good service, a friendly reception and help in resolving problems. I know receptionists that can help resolve extraordinary problems and others that can’t even get hold of a toothbrush. Then, of course, is the building’s beauty, I don’t like going to hotels like boxes, with nothing special about them, I like a beautiful hotel even if the quality isn’t quite as good.

O que privilegiam num hotel?

S.A.R. Dom Duarte: O conforto de um quarto, o silêncio e a tranquilidade, um bom serviço, uma recepção simpática e que nos ajuda a resolver problemas. Conheço recepcionistas que nos ajudam a resolver problemas extraordinários e outros que são incapazes de arranjar uma escova de dentes. Não gosto de ir para um hotel que seja um caixote, sem graça nenhuma, gosto de um hotel bonito, mesmo que a qualidade não seja tão boa.

Gostaria de deixar algumas recomendações aos seus compatriotas no que diz respeito a viagens?

S.A.R. Dom Duarte: Acho que quando vão viajar, deviam escolher bem os destinos... claro que o preço é sempre um critério, mas por exemplo, há que ter em conta a escolha de um lugar com raízes culturais portuguesas. Se for à Índia, aconselho visitar Goa, Damão e Diu que são territórios belíssimos, ordeiros e com um nível de serviço para o turismo melhor que o resto do país. Em vez de ir só a Indonésia ir também a Timor, que é um destino interessantíssimo e que emociona qualquer Português.

Em Moçambique há um turismo de excelente qualidade. Angola também já tem destinos turísticos com qualidade... em Cabo Verde não ir só ás Ilhas do Sal ou da Boavista, mas explorar outros destinos muito interessantes. No Reino de Marrocos há várias cidades com magníficos monumentos portugueses, como Arzila, Mazagão (El Djadida), etc. Em Portugal há tantas paisagens e monumentos extraordinários para descobrir que devíamos dar prioridade à descoberta do nosso património! E para isso as Pousadas e o Turismo de Habitação são certamente excelentes opções. Há também alguns hotéis antigos muito interessantes. Infelizmente há muitos hotéis sem qualquer interesse, embora o serviço possa ser bom.

Would you like to share some travel tips with your compatriots?

HRH Dom Duarte: I think that when our compatriots travel they should choose their destinations carefully… Cost is always an important criteria, but another criteria should be to visit a place with Portuguese cultural roots. If you go to India, I recommend you visit Goa, Daman and Diu which are stunning, orderly countries with a better level of tourism service than the rest of the country. Instead of just going to Indonesia, visit Timor as well which is an extremely interesting destination that will move any Portuguese person. There is also excellent quality tourism in Mozambique. Angola also already has high quality tourism destinations… even some regions in the interior are interesting, for more adventurous tourism. In Cape Verde don’t just visit the Island of Sal or Boavista, explore the other really interesting destinations. The Kingdom of Morocco has various cities with magnificent Portuguese monuments such as Arzila, Mazagão (El Djadida) etc. There are so many extraordinary landscapes and monuments to discover in Portugal that we should prioritise the discovery of our own heritage. The Pousadas and Guest’s Houses are excellent options. There are also some very old hotels of great interest.

T R AV E L L E R Q U E S T I O N N A I R E Para os cinéfilos, James Gray dispensa apresentações, sobretudo na Europa, onde parece ser mais conhecido do que na terra que o viu nascer. O realizador e guionista norte-americano, nascido em 1969, fez o seu primeiro filme com apenas 25 anos, “Viver e Morrer em Little Odessa”, que viria a ganhar o Leão de Prata no Festival de Veneza em 1994. O seu filme mais recente, “A Imigrante”, foi nomeado para a Palma de Ouro de Cannes. Criado em Queens, James Gray em criança queria ser pintor, mas graças à influência de Francis Ford Coppola deixou de lado esse sonho para viver da sétima arte. Encontrámo-lo hospedado no Pestana Palace hospedado e falámos com ele.

For cinema lovers, James Gray needs no introductions, especially in Europe where he seems to be more wellknown than he is in the country where he was born. The North American director and writer, born in 1969, made his first film when he was only 25, “Little Odessa” which won a Silver Lion at the Venice Festival in 1994. His latest work, “The Immigrant”, was nominated for the Golden Palm award in Cannes. Brought up in Queens, as a child James Gray wanted to be a painter, which might explain the high quality of the photography in his films, but it was thanks to the influence of Francis Ford Coppola that he put this dream aside to dedicate himself to the seventh art. We bumped into him at the Pestana Palace and had a chat.

W: Do you have any habits or rituals when you get to a hotel room?

JG: I do, I’m going through them now in mind, it’s funny. Well the first thing I do is… I never take baths when I’m at home, but when I stay in a hotel, the first thing I have to do when I get off the plane is get in a tub, which I don’t really understand, but I have to check out the hotel tub. I have to make sure I unpack my suitcase and hang up my suits as soon as I get into the room, as if 5 extra minutes of wrinkles will destroy the suit or something. The most important thing about the hotel room are the sheets and the length of the bed. I can’t sleep if the length of the bed is wrong, too short for me or something. If the sheets are a certain way and if I like the sheets I know that my sleep is going to be very good. You know, one thing I never do at home is watch TV but the best thing in the world to do in a hotel is to watch television with a great feeling bed and to just lie there “vegging out” because I have three young children in the house and they’re always jumping on my head or whatever, so the hotel is always an excuse for me to relax and eat loads of chocolate.

W: Tem algum hábito ou ritual quando chega a um quarto de hotel?

JG: Tenho, estou agora a pensar neles, tem piada. Bem a primeira coisa que faço é… eu nunca tomo banho de imersão em casa, mas quando estou num hotel a primeira coisa que tenho de fazer quando saio do avião é saltar para a banheira, algo que realmente não consigo explicar. Faço questão de desfazer a mala e pendurar os meus fatos mal chegue ao quarto, como se cinco minutos a mais de rugas ou vincos destruíssem os meus fatos. A coisa mais importante num quarto de hotel são os lençóis, bem como o comprimento da cama. Não consigo dormir se o comprimento da cama não for correto, pequeno demais para a minha estatura ou algo assim.

Se os lençóis estiverem de uma certa maneira e se gostar dos lençóis sei que vou ter uma boa noite. Sabe, algo que não costumo fazer em casa é ver televisão, mas a melhor coisa para se fazer num quarto de hotel é ver televisão numa boa cama e ficar ali sentado sem fazer nada excepto vegetar, porque em casa tenho 3 filhos pequenos e eles estão sempre a saltar-me para cima, por isso, o hotel é sempre uma desculpa para relaxar e comer imensos chocolates.

How does travelling influence your work?

Hugely because it’s very important to see how people across the world live. It’s very important to understand how customs, culture and different societies weigh in on a people’s character, how they affect people’s behaviour. That’s almost everything as a film-maker, you’re trying to get to the core of what causes people to act in a certain way, travel’s very important for that, you see people in all their different guises.

Como é que as viagens influenciam o seu trabalho?

Bastante, pois é muito importante ver como as pessoas vivem em diversas partes do mundo e perceber como os costumes, culturas e diferentes sociedades influenciam o carácter das pessoas, como afectam o seu comportamento. Tal como ser realizador, em que tentamos chegar ao núcleo do que leva as pessoas a agirem de uma certa maneira. Viajar é muito importante por causa disso mesmo, vêem-se as pessoas em diversos disfarces.

Have you always travelled, since you were young?

Yeah, I can blame my parents for many different things, not least the shape of my nose, but they were very, very good about bringing my brother and I to Europe and around the world even when we were very young. The first time I came to Europe from the United States was 1972, I’m dating myself now, so I would have been three. So that’s pretty good, my parents willing to take me to Paris at the age of three. Maybe they just couldn’t get a sitter or something but I know they wanted to expose me to a different side of the world and I think that they knew that even if I didn’t remember the trip, that I would somehow at least absorb it and I think that what it does is that it makes you not worry so much about culture shock, fearing other places and other people. This was really one of their greatest contributions to me.

Sempre viajou, desde pequeno?

Sim, posso culpar os meus pais por muita coisa, nem que seja pela forma do meu nariz, mas eles fizeram muito, muito bem em trazer-me a mim e ao meu irmão para a Europa e a outros lugares do mundo mesmo sendo nós bastante jovens.

A primeira vez que vim dos Estados Unidos à Europa foi em 1972, estou em vias de revelar a minha idade, portanto com 3 anos. Isso é muito bom, ter uns pais que estavam dispostos a levar-me a Paris com apenas três anos. Talvez não conseguissem arranjar uma ama, mas eu sei que eles quiseram expor-me a outro lado do mundo e eu acho que eles, mesmo sabendo que eu não me iria lembrar da viajem, sabiam que pelo menos iria absorver algo e eu acho que foi isso que me fez não ter medo de outros lugares ou do choque de culturas.

Isso foi uma das maiores contribuições que os meus pais me deram.

Do you have a favourite destination?

My favourite destination used to be by far, Paris. Which I still love but there’s been some competition lately. I’m a huge fan of Europe. I’ve been here in Lisbon for a few days now and it’s been incredible. I love Rome, I love Florence. It’s pretty hard to beat Continental Europe you know, I’ve been all over Asia and South America so I feel like I’m insulting them but I really, really like Buenos Aires.

Tem um destino favorito?

O meu destino favorito costumava ser, de longe, Paris, que ainda adoro, mas tem tido alguma competição ultimamente, sou um grande fã da Europa, estou há já alguns dias em Lisboa e tem sido incrível. Adoro Roma, adoro Florença. É difícil competir com a Europa continental, já estive pela Ásia e América do Sul por isso, sinto que estou a insultá-los mas eu gosto muito, muito de Buenos Aires.

Voltando aos hotéis, gostaria de ser dono de um hotel? Como o Coppola...

Ah sim, como o Francis. Não, nunca o conseguiria fazer. Sei que ele tem aquele hotel em Belize e acho que tem outro em Itália, na Puglia. Vejo isso como uma carga de trabalhos, é necessário muito para ter um grande hotel, quase monumental, bem como a atenção aos detalhes, por isso acho que eu falharia. Jamais quero ter um hotel... a quantidade de trabalho e dedicação é de loucos!

Getting back to hotels, would you like to own a hotel? Like Coppola...

Oh yeah, like Francis. No I could never do it. I know he owns that place in Belize and I think he owns a place in Italy, in Puglia. I see the amount of work it takes to make a great hotel, it’s almost monumental and the attention to detail is incredibly important so I think I would fail. So I would never want to own a hotel… the amount of work and focus, it’s crazy!

Do you believe that cinema inspires life?

There’s so many different ways that I can answer that question because the obvious question would be does life inspire cinema…

I hate to tell you this, it’s a dark story. I quit smoking nine years ago and I can tell you that I started smoking as a kid because I saw Sean Connery doing it in James Bond. You see the cigarette bouncing up and down and I thought James Bond was the coolest looking dude in the world. It certainly affected my behaviour in that way. In other ways too, like the way people dress, in Bonnie and Clyde that look had gone out of style and then in 1977, Faye Dunnaway started wearing the clothes from 1932 and then all of a sudden it became the rage again. So I think it does inform life completely and I think it informs behaviour as a whole. You see people copying Al Pacino in Scarface all the time, not always for the better either. Some people adapt the wrong things from movies, you know the mafia, never had the term “Godfather”, never kissed people’s hand, never had that whole ritual. They stole that from the Coppola movie. Francis had all this behaviour put in the movie and now the mafia does that from the movie. So of course cinema informs life but really life informs cinema much more, good cinema, you watch a movie that´s good and it feels like life, right, that’s rare.

Odeio dizer-lhe isto, é uma história pessoal, deixei de fumar há nove anos atrás e posso dizer-lhe que comecei a fumar porque em miúdo vi o Sean Connery a fumar nos filmes do James Bond. Achava o James Bond o homem mais cool do mundo. De facto, influenciou o meu comportamento. Noutras maneiras também, a maneira como as pessoas se vestem. No filme Bonnie and Clyde, o visual já tinha passado de moda, mas depois em 1977 Faye Dunnaway começou a usar roupas de 1932 e, de repente, virou moda outra vez. Por isso acho que influencia a vida e acho que influencia o comportamento como um todo. Vemos pessoas a copiar o Al Pacino no Scarface a todo a hora, nem sempre pelo melhor. Alguns adaptam termos errados dos filmes, sabia que a Máfia nunca usou o termo “padrinho”, nunca beijavam a mão, não tinham esses rituais. Roubaram isso do filme do Coppola. Portanto, claro que o cinema influencia a vida mas a vida influencia o cinema muito mais, bons filmes, vemos bons filmes e parece a vida, isso é raro.

Aqui, ao olhar o céu vêem-se passar revoadas de pássaros verdes, desses que, em Paris, só vemos nas gaiolas de aves exóticas do jardim zoológico. Nada de bandos de pardais por estas bandas, mas sim caturritas, ou “cotorras” como lhe chamam. Para quem quer crer que está na Europa, uma revoada verde de realidade ao melhor estilo sul americano.

Buenos Aires distingue-se por ser única e inimitável.

Deve-o à sua geografia plana, ao verde dos seus parques, à cultura que se respira, a uma mistura de cidade e de campo num cenário absolutamente cosmopolita.

A oferta cultural da cidade é imensa: há de tudo e para todos os gostos… teatro, ópera, livrarias que ficam abertas até altas horas da noite (Buenos Aires tem algumas das livrarias mais bonitas do mundo, que ignoram os best sellers para privilegiar os long sellers), tem uma oferta gastronómica incrível e os bodegones tradicionais coabitam em perfeita harmonia com os restaurantes chiques de comida de fusão e com os bares speakeasys que estão na moda e fazem furor.

Os bairros sucedem-se, um atrás do outro, todos diferentes, todos com as suas tribos, todos com alma própria. Tem as avenidas mais amplas e a multidão mais bonita que se conhece.

The old cliché that Buenos Aires is the “Paris of South America” doesn’t work perfectly. Look up at the sky here and you’ll see flocks of green birds, which you only see in the cages of exotic birds in a Paris zoo. There are no flocks of sparrows around here, but parrots or “cotorras” as they are known here.

For those who want to believe they are in Europe, a flock of green reality, in true South American style.

Buenos Aires stands out as it is unique and inimitable.

This is due to its flat landscape, green parks, the culture and the mixture of the city and countryside in an absolutely cosmopolitan scenario.

The city’s cultural offering is huge: there’s something for everyone’s taste… theatre, opera, and bookshops that are open until late at night (Buenos Aires has some of the World’s most beautiful bookshops that ignore the best sellers, privileging “long sellers”). It is where incredible cuisine and the traditional “bodegones” coexist in perfect harmony with the chic fusion food restaurants and the speakeasy bars that are so in fashion and are all the rage.

The districts succeed each other, all different with their own tribes and specific souls. It has the widest avenues and the most beautiful crowds known.

Let’s start with the people. The “Porteños” (named this way as they are from a port city) are beautiful and they know they are. Both men and women. They’re friendly, outdoor lovers, generous, welcoming, flirtatious, and superlative in their choice of adjectives. They are very physical, easy going, they sing, dance and have a really good time. They spoil their children, parents and friends exaggeratedly. When you see the way they express their emotions, it makes you feel sorry for not having given more hugs in your life. They drink “mate”, are cultured people, welleducated and elegant. They go the theatre and opera regularly and are avid readers. They are extremely proud of their country, they wear a blue and white rosette on public holidays and also decorate their verandas, roads and cars in the nation’s colours.

They spread rumours that God is an Argentine and lives in Buenos Aires. Now they even have a pope that speaks with a “Porteño” accent.

Food-wise, they are abundant, born in a country where resources are plentiful, they never had to worry about developing great cuisine techniques. They are simplistic and their cuisine is based solely on the high quality of the raw material, nothing pleases them more than sharing a barbecue with family and friends.

Invariably, for dessert, they serve something made with, or that comes served with, the inevitable “dulce de leche”, a milk-based caramel.

It’s a privilege to live in Buenos Aires – it’s a stunning, fun and large scale city with endless things to discover.

Comecemos pelas pessoas. Os Porteños (chamados assim por serem oriundos de uma cidade portuária) são bonitos e sabem que o são. Tanto eles como elas. São amigáveis, vivem fora de portas, são generosos, acolhedores, piropeadores e superlativos nos adjectivos que usam. São físicos, alegres, despreocupados, cantam, dançam e divertem-se a valer. Mimam exageradamente os seus filhos, os seus pais e os seus amigos. Ao ver tanta expressividade nas emoções até sentimos pena de ter desperdiçado tantos abraços ao longo da vida. Tomam mate, são cultos, educados, elegantes. Vão regularmente ao teatro, à ópera e são ávidos leitores. Têm um enorme orgulho no seu país, usam a roseta (um alfinete de peito com as cores da bandeira) nos feriados e ainda decoram as varandas, as ruas, os carros com o azul e branco da nação. Fazem correr o boato que Deus é Argentino e atende em Buenos Aires. Agora até têm um Papa que fala com tonada porteña.

Gastronomicamente, como são filhos da abundância, naturais de um país onde os recursos abundam, nunca tiveram de se preocupar em desenvolver grandes técnicas culinárias. São simplistas e a sua cozinha assenta unicamente na qualidade da matéria prima. São esplêndidos assadores, mas pouco mais. Carnívoros a morir, nada os faz mais felizes que partilharem um assado com a família e os amigos. À sobremesa, invariavelmente, servem algo feito ou acompanhado com o inevitável dulce de leche. É um privilégio viver em Buenos Aires - é uma cidade belíssima, desfrutável, feita a grande escala, que tem uma infinidade de coisas para descobrir.

MARTIN FOURCADE

LOCAL PEOPLE Raised in a family of architects, Martin Fourcade’s calling was clear from the get-go. Martin’s vision at the young age of 28 prevailed over 400 other proposals in an international competition to build the Latin American Art Museum of Buenos Aires (MALBA), which he worked on with his two partners, Gastón Atelman and Alfredo Tapia. Together they formed AFT Arquitectos in Buenos Aires, a successful architecture studio that has worked on a variety of projects all over the world. We sat down with Martin at the inspiring museum that bears his signature to discuss the MALBA project and learn about his unique and honest approach to architecture.

Criado numa família de arquitetos, o destino de Martin Fourcade ficou claro desde muito cedo. Aos 28 anos, a visão de Martin prevaleceu sobre mais de 400 propostas numa competição internacional para construir o Museu de Arte Latino-Americano de Buenos Aires (MALBA), juntamente com os seus 2 sócios, Gastón Atelman e Alfredo Tapia. Juntos formaram a AFT Arquitetos em Buenos Aires, um atelier de sucesso que trabalha em vários projectos a nível internacional. Sentámo-nos com Martin no inspirador museu que leva a sua assinatura para discutir o projeto do MALBA e para aprender mais sobre a sua abordagem única e honesta relativamente à arquitetura.

Mudei-me devido ao projeto do MALBA, há 13 anos.

When did you move to Buenos Aires?

I came because of this MALBA project, about 13 years ago.

Fale-nos deste projeto.

Foi uma mera casualidade. Os meus pais são arquitetos, sabiam que esta competição estava prestes a começar e os meus sócios e eu tínhamos acabado de nos licenciar. O meu pai propôs juntarmo-nos a ele nesta competição, mas nós decidimos fazer este projeto sozinhos. Éramos jovens, sendo eu o mais velho dos três, com apenas 28 anos. Queríamos ganhar experiência a nível destas competições internacionais.

Havia mais de 400 projetos de 40 países diferentes... e acabaram por nos dizer que tínhamos sido nós a ganhar.

Tell us about this project.

It was half by chance. My parents are architects and they knew about this competition that was taking place and my partners and I had just graduated, we were young, I was the eldest of the three and was 28. My father called us to join him in this competition but we decided to do it by ourselves instead. We wanted to experience competing on an international level. There were more than 400 entries from 40 different countries across the world... and well, they told us we had won.

Como foi o dia em que receberam esta noticia? Ficaram surpreendidos?

Sim, completamente. A ideia de participarmos era para aprendermos, apresentarmos uma ideia para depois compararmos à que ganhasse.

What was it like the day you got the news? Was it a big surprise?

Yes, totally. The idea was to participate so that we could learn.

You submit your idea and then you compare it to the one that wins.

So you are a team of 3 architects. What is the importance or, what is the role, of each of you?

It’s the same. Before our paths used to cross more, as was the case with the MALBA project, but it’s more difficult now because we have a higher volume of work, but we share everything.

São uma equipa de três arquitetos. Qual a importância, ou qual o papel de cada um?

Exatamente o mesmo. Antes os nossos caminhos cruzavamse mais, por exemplo no projeto do MALBA, mas agora é mais difícil, devido ao elevado volume de trabalho que temos, no entanto continuamos a partilhar tudo.

What was your vision when you created the proposal and what made it stand out from the other proposals?

At the time this museum was built, it was very unusual for a museum to be built from scratch. In general, museums in Buenos Aires were adaptations from older buildings... so this was all about creating a museum from zero. And we always said that there were three facets that we wanted to cover. One was the relationship between the museum and the city, because it has a very visible presence. Another was the relationship with the people, which is basically its life… and finally, its relationship with art, which is its specific role. So we could say that the entire project was created using these three ingredients, always paying attention to the response that the building was giving to each of these conditions. Our first reflection was on how to measure these responses so that on one hand, it would be a building that was powerful for the city, but on the other hand, we always said that there should be a fair balance between the protagonism of the architecture and the art being exhibited. We thought that the architecture had to accompany the experience of the encounter with the art... which is an aesthetic experience but also an emotional one, and the architecture has to participate in this experience, it doesn’t have to be left out.

Qual era a sua visão quando criou a proposta e o que fez com que ela sobressaísse em relação às outras propostas?

Quando se fez este edifício era muito raro um museu ser construído de raíz. Em geral, os museus em Buenos Aires eram adaptações de edifícios antigos, por isso este projeto foi basicamente criar um museu a partir do zero. Nós sempre dissemos que havia três aspetos que queríamos cobrir. Um era a relação entre o museu e a cidade, pois era uma presença bastante visível. O outro aspeto era a relação com as pessoas e por fim a relação com a arte, sendo este o papel a que estava destinado, por isso podemos dizer que este projeto foi feito usando estes três ingredientes, tendo sempre em atenção a resposta que o edifício dava a estas condições. A nossa primeira reflexão foi como medir estas respostas para que, por um lado, este edifício fosse um marco forte na cidade e, por outro lado, existisse sempre um equilíbrio no protagonismo entre o edifício e a arte que lá se encontrava exposta. Nós achávamos que a arquitetura tinha de acompanhar a arte, tornando-se assim numa experiência estética e emocional.

Como é que o trabalho se relaciona com o ambiente? O ambiente tem influência no trabalho?

Sim, completamente. Especialmente no local onde este museu se encontra. Esta localização tem quatro facetas e todas elas têm a sua respetiva personalidade. Por um lado, nós pensámos que uma das características seria a intemporalidade e esta intemporalidade teria de ter um impacto na sua presença. Por outro lado, é bem notório como são diferentes as almas das ruas que o rodeiam. De um lado temos a Avenida Figeruoa Alcorta que tem bastante trânsito, as pessoas andam sempre a correr, por isso a sua presença institucional teria de ser bastante sintetizada e poderosa, fazendo com que esta fosse a “face pública” do museu. How does the work relate to its environment? Does the environment have much influence on the work?

Yes, totally. Especially the place where this museum is. This land has four faces and each has its own personality. On the one hand, we thought that one of the work’s characteristics was that it had to be timeless and this timelessness had to be in the impact of its presence. On the other hand, it’s very apparent how the streets surrounding the museum each have a very distinct soul… on one side there’s the Figueroa Alcorta Avenue with a lot of traffic where people are always rushing by, so the institutional presentation had 55

do lado direito tem imensos jacarandás, é a única que tem um ambiente de bairro residencial, logo achamos que para esta face teríamos de preservar este ambiente de bairro, por isso projetámos esta face em vidro para que os jacarandás fizessem parte da decoração do edifício e desta forma não diminuía a escala da rua. Depois temos o parque do lado esquerdo e os parques providenciam-nos sempre uma perspectiva longa, por isso este lado tinha de ter um corpo mais forte para dar mais perspectiva à área verde. É como se o edifício respondesse aos diferentes estímulos da cidade em cada face que possui. Antes de começarmos o trabalho viemos e sentámo-nos aqui para respirar o espaço e percebê-lo e lembro-me que estas foram as nossas percepções desde o primeiro dia.

to be very synthesized and powerful, as it’s kind of like its “public face”. The street on the right side has many Jacaranda trees, it’s the only one that has a residential environment and we thought that for this face we had to preserve the neighborhood feel, so we made this side of glass so that the Jacarandas could participate, becoming part of the buildings décor and thereby not belittling the scale of the street. Then there is the park on the left side and parks always provide a deep perspectives so this side is stronger and gives the green area more presence. It’s as if the building responds to the stimulus of the city on each face. Before we started the work, we came and sat here to take it in and understand the space from scratch and I remember that these were our perceptions right from the very first day.

Existem elementos na natureza que o inspirem?

Não sei se é porque vimos de onde vimos, mas o nosso lugar de origem é longe do mar e das montanhas, mas é um lugar com pedra. Quando estávamos a escolher entre a opção da pedra e outros materiais para a obra, o que procurávamos era sempre uma presença monolítica, muito inequívoca. Se tenho de referir um elemento da natureza será sempre a pedra... o seu peso e permanência.

Are there elements in nature that inspire you?

I don’t know if it has to do with where we come from, but our place of origin is far from the sea and the mountains, it’s a place of stone. When we were choosing the materials for the project, we were seeking a very unequivocal monolithic presence. If I have to refer to a natural element, it has always been stone for me… its weight and permanence.

Se pudesse criar um hotel, que tipo de hotel gostaria que fosse?

Cada vez mais prefiro a arquitetura que passa despercebida… uma arquitetura que se torna invisível perante o ambiente que a rodeia. Se me perguntar que hotel gostaria de fazer, gostaria de fazer um hotel onde haja um ambiente suficientemente presente para que a arquitetura se perdesse. Geralmente os hotéis tinham grandes estruturas, tipo barcos gigantes atracados na doca, e toda a vida deles se encontrava por dentro. Eu tenho a sensação de que as pessoas procuram algo diferente, procuram uma relação mais individual com a natureza e creio que essa é a importância que se deve dar em vez de a destruir.

If you could create a hotel, what type of hotel would you like it to be?

More and more I prefer architecture that goes by unnoticed… architecture that becomes invisible in its natural surroundings. If you ask me what type of hotel I would like to design, I would like to create a hotel where the surroundings are sufficiently present so that the architecture gets lost. In general, there was a time when hotels had grand structures like a gigantic ship anchored on the seafront, where all the life was inside... and I believe that now people are looking for something else, they seek a much more individual relationship with nature and I think that importance has to be given to this relationship instead of destroying it.

izem, os que a visitam, que Montevidéu é uma cidade grande com ritmo de aldeia. Uma capital mais relaxada que a maioria, onde os habitantes não correm, o presidente circula num velho Volkswagen carocha com o seu cão de três patas e toda gente parece ter tempo para beber o seu yerbamate, a bebida típica. Uma obsessão tal que os nativos andam pela rua com o termo com água quente debaixo do braço e a bombilla, o recipiente onde bebem a amarga infusão, na mão. A idiossincrasia mostra que o mate marca os tempos e que um autêntico montevideano bebe um antes de fazer o que quer que seja, como se nele procurasse a inspiração.

Os visitantes também asseguram que a cidade possui um certo charme europeu, uma sofisticação acentuada pela sua arquitetura art déco, os passeios arborizados e as ruas em pedra, que a maior parte dos bairros mantêm desde a sua fundação. Os locais dizem que a cidade é tão sul-americana que nas ruas se respira futebol visceral, música de tambores africanos e deliciosas ondas de fumo dos assados, o prato nacional, cozinhado por tradição sobre brasas de madeira queimada e nunca em carvão. Usar o carvão para fazer o asado é considerado uma espécie de sacrilégio, quase como por açúcar no mate, “coisas de argentinos”.

Embora durante a época dourada dos anos 50 o Uruguai fosse conhecido como a “Suíça da América”, Montevidéu não possui muita da perfeição de Zurique. É mais orgânica, rústica e se

- hose who visit it say that Montevideo is a city with the pace of a small town. It’s a more relaxed capital than normal, where the locals don’t rush, the president drives around in an old Volkswagen beetle with his three-legged dog and everyone seems to take their time and drink their “yerbamate”, the typical drink. The latter is an obsession for the natives, to the point that they walk around with a thermos of hot water under their arm and a “bombilla”, the metal straw used to sip the bitter infusion, in their hand. The idiosyncrasy indicates that it is the mate that marks time and that an authentic Montevideano drinks one before doing whatever he or she has to do, as if seeking inspiration in the brew.

Visitors also assure that the city possesses a certain European charm, a sophistication that is enhanced by its art deco architecture, its sidewalks lined with trees and its cobblestone streets that most neighbourhoods have maintained since the city’s foundation. To which locals respond that the city is so South American that its streets breathe visceral football, afro drum beats and exquisite waves of smoke from asados, the national dish, traditionally grilled on embers of firewood, and never on charcoal. Using charcoal to make an asado is considered a kind of sacrilege, almost like putting sugar in mate, “it’s an Argentine thing”.

Although Uruguay was known as the “Switzerland of South America” during the golden years of the 1950s, Montevideo doesn’t have much of Zurich’s perfection. It’s more organic, rustic and if we were to compare

fizéssemos comparações poderíamos afirmar que os gloriosos 22 quilómetros de rambla com palmeiras virada para o Rio da Prata, o mais largo do mundo (tão largo que parece o mar), teletransporta-nos para uma carismática mistura entre Barcelona e Havana.

Asseguram os seus habitantes que é uma cidade matizada, de certa forma melancólica e tanguera durante o inverno, quando a posição do sol cria um ambiente de tons sépia, mas bastante alegre nas estações mais quentes, quando os bares e restaurantes põem as mesas nos passeios e a população invade os inúmeros parques, os gigantescos mercados de rua e, principalmente, a Meca de qualquer montevideano ocioso que se preze, a rambla, o seu tesouro urbano, coroado com as praias.

Não é por acaso que Montevidéu é a sede do Carnaval mais longo do Mundo, com uma duração de 35 dias, entre meados de Janeiro e finais de Fevereiro. É que os locais têm o hábito de levar muito a sério as suas paixões, mesmo quando se trata de render o culto à diversão e ao festejo. Por isso, provavelmente, além do que os locais e visitantes repetem sobre a cidade, o que acaba por a tornar entranhável é o carácter da sua gente, que parece viver enraizada num romantismo de outra época.

it to somewhere else, we could say that its glorious 22 kilometres of “rambla”, with palm trees facing the Río de la Plata, the widest river in the world (so wide that it resembles the sea), transport us to a charismatic mixture between Barcelona and La Habana.

Its inhabitants assure that it is a city of nuances, somewhat melancholic and “tanguera” during the winter when the sun’s position creates an ambiance of sepia tones; but extremely cheerful in the warmer seasons, when bars and restaurants put their tables on the sidewalks and the population invades the many parks, gigantic street markets and, most importantly, the Mecca of any idle Montevideano who appreciates its urban treasure, the “rambla” mentioned above, crowned with beaches.

It’s no coincidence that Montevideo has the longest running carnival in the world, lasting 35 days, from mid-January until the end of February. The locals take their passions very seriously, even when it comes to worshipping fun and celebration. That’s why it’s likely that, beyond what locals and visitors repeat about the features of the city, what really makes it endearing always lies in the character of its people, who seem to live rooted in the romance of another era.

JOCKEY CLUB MONTEVIDEO

Projetado, em 1929, pelo arquiteto francês Joseph Carré, o Jockey Club de Montevidéu abriu as portas em 1932 para acolher o clube de homens, onde as mulheres, salvo raras excepções, estavam interditas de entrar. Conhecido por ser um sítio elitista, associado durante anos à ditadura, o Jockey Club permitia aos cavalheiros passarem os dias entretidos com esgrima, jogos de cartas, leituras e bilhar, enquanto cuidavam do seu aspecto e bem-estar com banhos turcos, na barbearia e na manicure. Sendo frequentado por políticos, empresários e representantes do poder, não é de admirar que muita da história do Uruguai se tenha engendrado por estes deslumbrantes salões art déco, forrados a mármore, onde a luz filtrada pelos impressionantes vitrais se junta à iluminação dos candeeiros de cobre trazendo majestosidade a todo o edifício, que é monumento nacional desde 1975. Para dar nova vida a este emblemático edifício, símbolo da prosperidade económica do Uruguai nos anos 30, foi escolhido o experiente Grupo Pestana, com provas dadas da sua capacidade de criar hotéis em sítios históricos, respeitando o passado sem descurar o futuro. O Jockey Club assinala assim a chegada ao Uruguai do Grupo Pestana, que aqui vai fazer nascer um hotel de referência.

Mas enquanto as obras decorrem, entendeu o grupo devolver a Montevidéu, para já, uma parte do Jockey Club, fazendo nascer um restaurante no salão do piso térreo.

Dirigido pelo Chef uruguaio Marco Bonino, o Jockey Club Restaurante oferece uma proposta gastronómica surpreendente, assente nos produtos locais frescos da estação. Para aguçar o apetite refiram-se apenas os rosselini de salmão e queijo de cabra com molho de chili e lima, a caponata siciliana com molho de passas e azeitona, o carpaccio de lombo ou cordeiro com chocante de verdura provençal. Uma das inovações é que aqui não se cobra um valor por prato, mas sim um valor fixo pela quantidade de pratos consumidos, uma forma de garantir que aqui se come o que realmente se quer, sem ter de basear a escolha pela coluna direita do menú, a coluna dos preços. Com cerca de 80 lugares atualmente, o restaurante deverá crescer para os 120, com a já prevista recuperação dos salões da parte dianteira do edifício. A formação da equipa é outro dos pontos fortes. Todos os elementos estão preparados para, a partir do momento que um cliente passa a porta giratória, tornarem sempre a passagem pelo Jockey Club numa experiência inesquecível.

Whilst the works are underway, the Group decided, for the time being, to give back a part of the Jockey Club to Montevideo by creating a restaurant in the salon of the ground floor.

Managed by the Uruguayan, Marco Bonino, the Jockey Club Restaurant offers a surprising cuisine, based on seasonal, local products. To open the appetite and just to mention a few of the dishes, there’s the salmon rosselini and goat cheese with chilli and lemon sauce, the Sicilian Caponata with raisins and olive sauce, the loin carpaccio or lamb with crunchy provincial vegetables. One of the innovations here is that you don’t pay a fixed amount for each dish but rather a fixed price according to the number of dishes ordered guaranteeing that customers eat what they really feel like rather than basing their choice on the right-hand column of the menu, the price column. Currently with a capacity for about 80 people, this number should increase to 120 after the restoration of the back part of the building. The training of the members of the team is another of its strong points. They have all been prepared to ensure that customers, from the moment they enter through the revolving doors, have an unforgettable experience at the Jockey Club.

Designed in 1929 by the French architect Joseph Carré, the Montevideo Jockey Club opened its doors in 1932 as a men’s club where women were forbidden to enter, except on rare occasions.

Known as an elitist place and associated to the dictatorship for many years, the Jockey Club gave gentlemen the opportunity to spend some time being entertained, practicing fencing, playing card games and snooker whilst they took care of their appearance with Turkish baths, at the barbers and having a manicure. Frequented by politicians, businessmen and other representatives of public power, it is not surprising that much of Uruguay’s history was engendered in these stunning art deco salons, covered in marble where the light filtering through the impressive windows, merges with the light from the copper lamps bringing a majestic feeling to this building which has been a national moment since 1975. Chosen to bring new life to this symbol of Uruguay’s economic prosperity in the 1930s, was the experienced Pestana Group that has proven its ability to create hotels in historic places, respecting the past without neglecting the future. It is this way that the Jockey Club marks the Pestana Group’s entry into Uruguay, where it will give rise to an important hotel.

GUSTAVO BARDAVID Conhecido pela sua impressionante capacidade de recuperar casas típicas de Montevidéu e pela sua paixão pela simplicidade, o arquiteto Gustavo Bardavid foi o eleito para assinar o início da reabilitação de um dos mais icónicos edifícios de Montevidéu, o Jockey Club.

Renowned for his impressive ability to recover typical houses of Montevideo and for his passion for simplicity, the architect Gustavo Bardavid was chosen to start the rehabilitation of one of Montevideo’s most iconic buildings, the Jockey Club.

Gustavo Bardavid sonhou ser astronauta, mas cedo assentou os pés na terra e escolheu ser arquiteto. Forma-se em Montevidéu, terra onde nasceu, e mais tarde saiu para Barcelona, onde se especializou em iluminação. A sua paixão por Montevidéu fez com que voltasse. Para ele, a dimensão da cidade, a existência de um rio a que chamam mar, o sol, a riqueza arquitectónica e o povo amável fazem deste o seu sítio favorito para viver e trabalhar.

Conhecido pelo seu grandioso trabalho de recuperação das casas típicas em Montevidéu, não admira que tenha sido o escolhido para assinar a obra que está a dar que falar na capital do Uruguai. O Jockey Club estava fechado desde 1997 mas, graças à intervenção do Grupo Pestana, o antigo clube de homens acaba de reabrir as portas, numa primeira fase com um sumptuoso restaurante instalado no salão principal do piso térreo. O projeto do Grupo Pestana é bem maior e pretende dar nova vida a todo o edifício, mas para já os uruguaios podem finalmente entrar, para a maioria pela primeira vez, neste impressionante edifício Art Déco inaugurado em 1932. Recuperar este edifício foi, sem dúvida, um dos desafios da carreira de Gustavo Bardavid, que admite, sempre sentiu que este edifício não podia ser tocado. Sendo um edifício histórico as imposições legais eram muitas, mas a capacidade criativa do arquiteto Uruguaio impôs-se. A verdade é que o salão principal do piso térreo do Jockey Club está renascido e parece intocado, uma ideia que muito orgulha Gustavo Bardavid. O respeito pela alma do espaço foi de tal ordem que muitos hão-de dizer que sempre foi assim. Hoje entrar no Jockey Club é uma viagem no tempo, um deleite para os sentidos. Aos olhos ressaltam o bom-gosto, a nobreza dos materiais, a iluminação perfeita e ao olfacto e paladar as criações do chefe Marco Bonino, que assumiu o comando do restaurante Jockey Club.

Gustavo Bardavid’s dream was to become an astronaut but he soon came down to earth and chose architecture. He graduated in Montevideo, his place of birth and later left for Barcelona where he specialized in lighting. Nevertheless, his passion for Montevideo brought him back. For him, it’s the city’s size, its river that is called the sea, the sunshine, its architectural wealth and the friendly and kind people, are what make Montevideo his favourite place to live and work. Famous for his grandiose work restoring typical houses in Montevideo, it’s no surprise that he was chosen to develop the work which is the talk of the town in Uruguay’s capital.

The Jockey Club had been closed since 1977 but thanks to the Pestana Group, the former men’s club, has just re-opened, an initial phase with a sumptuous restaurant in the main salon on the ground floor.

The Pestana Group’s project is much more ambitious than this and aims to bring new life to the whole building, but for now the Uruguayans can finally enter, many for the first time ever, this impressive art deco building which was inaugurated in 1932. Recovering this building was, without any doubt, one of the biggest challenges of Gustavo Bardavid’s career as he had always felt that the building should remain untouched.

As it is a historical building, there were many legal constraints but the Uruguayan architect’s creative talent took over. The fact is that the Jockey Club’s main salon has been reborn and appears untouched, something that Gustavo Bardavid is very proud of. The respect for the space’s soul was such that many will claim that it has always been like that. Entering the ground floor of the Jockey Club is a passage through time that delights the senses, from the refined taste, the nobleness of the materials and the perfect lighting, to the aroma and taste of Marco Bonino’s creations, the chef who has taken command of the Jockey Club restaurant.

P E S TA N A C O N F I D E N T I A L Nos Hotéis Pestana é normal cruzarmonos com grandes personalidades. Desta vez encontrámos o Morrissey, o antigo vocalista e autor de canções da legendária banda dos anos 80 “The Smiths”. Convidámo-lo para uma pequena entrevista e ele escolheu a capela do Pestana Palace para a nossa conversa. Ficamos encantados com a sua simplicidade e o seu charme intelectual.

You often bump into great personalities at the Pestana Hotels, this time we found Morrissey, the former vocalist and songwriter from the legendary band from the 80s, “The Smiths”.

We invited him for a short interview and he chose the hotel’s chapel as the location. We were enchanted by his simplicity and intellectual charm.

W: Em primeiro lugar, onde nasceu?

M: Nasci num sítio chamado Manchester, que fica no centro de Inglaterra, mas toda a gente conhece Manchester. Nasci no centro de Manchester.

W: Firstly, where were you born?

M: I was born in a place called Manchester, in the centre of England, everyone knows Manchester.

Do you live there?

I did when I was born.

Vive lá?

Quando nasci sim, vivia lá.

What about now?

No... Now I live on the Globe, which is a big place.

E agora?

Não... Vivo no Globo, que é bastante grande.

Tem uma base onde volta regularmente?

Bem, na verdade não. Eu viajo, viajo, viajo, estou sempre em movimento.

Do you have a base, where you return to often?

Well no, not really. I just travel, travel, travel, I just keep moving on.

Quando começou a trabalhar com música?

Bem, devo dizer que foi por volta de 1982.

When did you first start working with music?

Well, I would say 1982.

Foi algo que sempre quis desde pequeno ou foi algo que surgiu mais tarde?

Had you always thought about it, since you were a child or did it happen later?

I thought of nothing else. Just pop music, television, the singer, the singer and the singer. Not the band, just the person who stood up by themselves with the microphone and addressed the world, with passionate songs especially. I just loved the singer standing alone and I thought it was very dramatic and powerful because you don’t rely on other people, you don’t rely on musicians or orchestras, you are absolutely alone and people have to listen to you really, or they can leave, it’s their choice.

What about Portugal, what do you think about it?

I’ve been to Portugal many times. It’s fascinating and obviously the weather is beautiful. The difficulty is, or not difficulty, as I am very proud to say that I don’t watch television that much, so it’s hard to get a grasp of what’s around me but the people seem very nice and very attractive and I wouldn’t say that about anywhere else.

O que pensa de Portugal?

Já estive várias vezes em Portugal. É fascinante e tem um ótimo clima, obviamente. O problema, ou não, pois tenho muito orgulho em dizer que não vejo televisão, é que se torna difícil para mim estar a par do que se passa à minha volta. Mas as pessoas parecem bastante simpáticas e muito atrativas, algo que não diria em mais lugar nenhum.

How has travelling affected your life?

It has changed it completely.

Em que medida viajar afeta a sua vida?

Mudou a minha vida por completo.

Has travelling influenced your work?

Yes, very much so, because when I first began I could only think of things around me and all I knew was Manchester and England.

So then I began to travel and see other countries and see the world and this way I could see the similarities and differences and this is obviously educational. To see how people live, how they are forced to live and you see the good and the bad and it’s frightening or it can uplift you.

Viajar influencia-o no trabalho?

Sim, muito. Quando comecei a cantar só pensava no que me rodeava e a única coisa que conhecia era Manchester e a Inglaterra. Por isso quando comecei a viajar, a ver outros países, a ver o mundo, comecei a ver as semelhanças e diferenças e obviamente que isso é educacional. Ver como as pessoas vivem, como são forçadas a viver e nós podemos ver o bom e mau.

Pode ser assustador ou pode ser animador.

Disse que não tem uma base, fica sempre em hotéis?

Sempre!

You said you didn’t have a base, do you always stay in hotels?

Always!

O que é importante num hotel?

Eu gosto de estar confortável. Gosto de boa comida, não me refiro a banquetes, apenas a boa comida, fico satisfeito e assim posso criar, posso escrever e fazer coisas na minha privacidade.

What’s important to you when you stay at a hotel?

I like to be very comfortable, I like good food. I don’t mean a huge feast, I like to have nice food and then I am perfectly happy and I can scribble, I can write, do things privately. I don’t want to be part of a gang or social gatherings, I just like to be locked away in

Muitas vezes as pessoas dizem-me: “É tão triste andares sempre de hotel em hotel, tens de fazer e desfazer malas...” e eu penso para mim próprio, e tu? Como vives? Passas toda a tua vida no mesmo sitio.

a very nice suite on the corner of the hotel so that people can think of me as a strange little person. I think that’s nice and many people throughout history have lived in hotels and go from hotel to hotel to hotel. People often say to me: “It’s so sad, moving from hotel to hotel, you have to pack and unpack ...” but I just think how do you live?

You stay in one spot all your life...

Qual o seu destino de férias favorito?

Gosto do sul de França, gosto do México... gosto sempre da ideia de praia, mas nem sempre resulta. Roma, claro, mas é muito agitada, bastante congestionada e é difícil de andar.

What is your favourite holiday destination?

I like the south of France, I like Mexico... I always like the idea of the beach but it doesn’t always work. Rome, of course, but it’s very busy, very congested, it’s hard to walk around.

O que acha deste hotel?

Bem, a suite que tenho é muito bonita e à noite não se ouve nada, e para mim isso é o paraíso. Eu não quero ouvir nada.

What do you think about this hotel?

Well, the suite I have is very beautiful and at night time I can’t hear anything and for me that is heaven. I don’t want to hear anything.

Sei que o seu livro foi um sucesso, estava à espera?

Não, nem dei entrevistas. Quando as pessoas publicam autobiografias em Inglaterra e na América estão sempre na televisão e vão a todos os talk-shows, por isso eu optei por fazer o oposto. Eu deixo que o livro viva ou que morra. Ele responde por si próprio. Foi diretamente para o número um e foi fantástico. Ainda hoje, passado quase um ano, continua a vender muito muito bem.

I heard your book was a big success, did you expect it?

No, I did no interviews.

When people publish autobiographies in England or America they are all over the television and they do all the talk shows so I decided I would do nothing. I will let the book live or die, it will stand by itself and it went straight to number 1 and it was fantastic.

Even now, it’s almost 1 year old and it’s selling very, very well.

Have you always thought of writing a book?

Yes, yes, yes...

Sempre pensou em escrever um livro?

Sim, sim, sim...

Was it time consuming?

Yes it was, because it’s very hard to travel and to write. Very, very difficult because you have to be still and you have to know where all your notes are, where your notebooks are, your writing material, etc... and each time you travel you are a bit confused, because you are packing, unpacking and always moving around, so I think it’s important to be still. Now I am writing a novel and I am very pleased.

Demorou muito tempo?

Sim demorou, porque é bastante difícil viajar e escrever. É muito, muito difícil, porque temos de estar sossegados, temos de saber onde estão os nossos apontamentos, os nossos cadernos e o nosso material de escrita e cada vez que viajamos ficamos confusos, porque estamos constantemente a mudar de sítio, a fazer e a desfazer malas, por isso eu acredito que é importante estar sossegado e parado. Neste momento estou a escrever um romance e estou bastante satisfeito.

Do you want to tell us anything else about this new project?

Absolutely nothing because there are people who talk about art, writing, music before they’ve done it and I just think, “don’t talk about it until you have done it because you might end up not doing it.”

Quer dizer-nos algo mais sobre este novo projecto?

Absolutamente nada. Porque as pessoas falam da sua arte, escrita ou música antes de a terem feito e eu penso, “não fales enquanto não o fizeres porque podes acabar por não o fazer ou por não o terminar.”

It’s part of human nature. To go further, break down barriers, achieve what no one else has ever achieved. The history of Luxury is like the history of mankind: to excel. The sky’s the limit for the ambitions of Man. And thank goodness for that.

á algo no Homem. Uma demanda. Uma permanente insatisfação que o faz querer ser melhor a cada dia que passa. O agora não é suficiente. Muito nunca é demais. A evolução está no seu (nosso) ADN e, de dilema em dilema, a Humanidade levou as suas capacidades intelectuais ao limite.

Dos bens de primeira necessidade ao luxo do supérfluo foi um patamar que levou poucos séculos a atingir. Das cavernas à civilização, dos desenhos rudimentares à arte, da necessidade de diferenciação aos ‘status’, do essencial ao luxo. A evolução é uma necessidade natural do Homem.

Como disse um dia o psicólogo americano Harold Maslow, “um músico deve compor, um artista deve pintar, um poeta deve escrever, caso pretendam deixar o seu coração em paz.

O que um homem pode ser, ele deve ser. A essa necessidade podemos dar o nome de auto-realização”. À teoria de Maslow podemos acrescentar que o luxo, para o Homem moderno, é uma forma suprema de auto-realização. A cereja que encima o bolo. O detalhe que faz a diferença num quotidiano em que as obrigações se sobrepõem aos prazeres da vida, sobretudo em épocas de austeridade como aquela que atravessamos.

Maria Antonieta chamava ao Petit Trianon – o “pequeno” palácio em Versalhes que lhe foi oferecido pelo marido, Luís XVI, os melhores e mais caros artesãos de Paris. As sedas mais puras e as pedras mais preciosas passavam sempre, e em primeiro lugar, pelas mãos e pelos olhos exigentes da rainha francesa. Exclusivo, inacessível, caro e ocidental.

- here’s something about Man. A demand. A permanent dissatisfaction that makes them want to be better every day that passes. The present is not enough. A lot is never too much. Evolution is in their (our) DNA and from dilemma to dilemma, Humanity has taken its intellectual capacities to the limit.

It took a few centuries to get from the basic necessities to the luxury of the superfluous. From caves to civilization, from rudimentary drawings to art, from need to the differentiation of “status”, from the essential to luxury. Evolution is a natural need of Man. As the American Psychologist, Harold Maslow once said, “a musician must make music, an artist must paint, a poet must write, if he is to be ultimately at peace with himself. What a man can be, he must be. This need we may call self-actualization.”

To Maslow’s theory we can add that for modern Man, luxury is a supreme form of self- actualization. The icing on the cake.

The details that make the difference in an everyday life where obligations take precedence over the pleasures of life, especially in times of austerity like then one we are currently going through.

Marie Antoinette used to summon the best and most expensive artisans in Paris to Petit Trianon – the “small” palace in Versailles that was a gift from her husband, Louis XVI. The purest silks and most precious stones always passed through the hands and before the eyes of the demanding French queen, first.

Exclusive, inaccessible, expensive and from the Western world.

That was what luxury was all about in the 18th century If Marie Antoinette were alive in the 21st century, there would certainly be thousands of Chinese women saving up many months’ salaries to be able to buy the same handbag she uses or Russian millionaires willing to buy the same pair of shoes as the queen’s in all the colours available. Nowadays,

A História já provou que o homem pode ser louco por marcas, fascinado por logótipos, estar temporária ou permanentemente cego pelo brilho do luxo. E nada disso depende de factores económicos ou de conjunturas históricas. Christopher J. Berry, historiador, filósofo e professor de Ciência Política na Universidade de Glasgow, é autor de um livro sobre luxo, intitulado “The Idea of Luxury: A Conceptual and Historical Investigation”.

Nesta obra, Berry defende que o luxo é “universal, perene e independente da história e da economia”. Ou seja, “luxo é apenas o refinamento das nossas necessidades, embora, claro, a ideia de refinamento mude em diferentes épocas e lugares”.

O Homem é o único ser vivo que tem a capacidade de sonhar. O sonho é a componente mais importante do luxo. Tudo começa com o desejo e a capacidade que uma marca tem de o criar, socorrendo-se da tradição, da herança de décadas de ‘savoir-faire’ a criar peças únicas, raras e exclusivas, da inovação e da criatividade que lhe permitem surpreender… e sobretudo de uma boa história para contar.

Emoções. É disso que se alimenta o Homem. O sonho, o desejo e a ligação criada por uma boa história ajudam a construir essas emoções, a fazer a ponte que liga definitivamente o Homem a uma peça de luxo. O consumidor gosta de sentir-se especial e o luxo consegue fazê-lo como ninguém. Seja ele traduzível em tempo – algo que tem vindo a ser definido como o ‘ultimate luxury’ do Homem moderno –, em experiências diferenciadoras, em acessórios, em obras de arte ou em algo de que não precisamos, mas sem o qual já não conseguimos viver, sob pena de matarmos o sonho. E ninguém sobreviveria a uma vida sem sonho, pois não?

luxury continues to be expensive, but it’s becoming increasingly less exclusive, less inaccessible and less often from the Western world. But just as appealing.

History has shown that man can be fanatic about brands, fascinated by logos, be temporarily or permanently blinded by luxury’s shine. None of this depends on economic factors or historical conjectures. The historian, philosopher and professor of political sciences at Glasgow University, Christopher J. Berry, is the author of a book about luxury entitled “The Idea of Luxury: A Conceptual and Historical Investigation”. In this work, Berry defends that luxury is universal, perennial and independent of history and the economy. In other words, luxury is just the refinement of our needs, although, of course, the idea of refinement changes in different times and places.

Man is the only living being that has the ability to dream.

Dreams are the most important components of luxury. It all starts with desire and a brand’s ability to create it, drawing on tradition and the heritage of decades of “savoir-faire” creating unique, rare, exclusive items using surprising innovation and creativity… and especially, having a good story to tell.

Emotions. This is what Man feeds off. The dream, desire and connection created by a good story help build these emotions and to definitively link Man to a luxury item. The consumer likes to feel special and luxury does this better than anything else.

Regardless of whether luxury is dictated by times (something that has come to be defined as the “ultimate luxury” of modern Man) or something that we do not need, we can’t live without it, under penalty of killing the dream. No one would survive a life without dreams, would we?

JOÃO JARDIM Nascido na “Cidade Maravilhosa” em 1964, João Jardim começou por estudar jornalismo, mas a paixão pela sétima arte falou mais alto. Formou-se cineasta em Nova Iorque e a sua obra de estreia, “Janela de Alma”, foi acolhido com 11 prémios um pouco por todo o mundo. Mas foi com a co-realização de “Lixo Extraordinário”, nomeado para o Óscar de Melhor Documentário em 2011, que João Jardim viria a ganhar maior destaque internacional. A sua primeira obra de ficção surge em 2014, “Getúlio”, uma longa metragem sobre os últimos dias de Getúlio Vargas, o presidente brasileiro que ao sentir-se traído por todos comete suicídio em 1954.

Aclamado pela crítica, o filme foi visto por mais de meio milhão de pessoas quando estreou, em Maio, no Brasil.

Born in the “Cidade Maravilhosa” in 1964, João Jardim started off studying journalism, but his passion for the seventh art soon took over. He studied to become a film director in New York and his first work “Janela de Alma”, received 11 awards in different parts of the world. However, it was his co-direction of “Lixo Extraordinário” that gave him international recognition and was nominated for Best Documentary at the 2011 Academy Awards. His first fiction work, “Getúlio”, was launched in 2014. This feature film is based on the last days of Getúlio Vargas’ life, the former Brazilian President who committed suicide in 1954 as he felt he had been betrayed by everyone. Critically acclaimed, the film was seen by half a million people when it was released in Brazil in May.

Beleza a todos os níveis, delicadeza e graciosidade… engraçado que não mencionei a inteligência, não é? (risos) Talvez a beleza a todos os níveis englobe isso.

O que é que aprecia mais num amigo?

A capacidade de se divertir.

Do que faz, o que é que mais gosta de fazer? Entrevistar.

Uma ideia de felicidade? Calma.

Uma ideia de infelicidade? Solidão.

Se fosse outra pessoa, quem gostaria de ser?

José Saramago, pareceu-me uma pessoa com capacidade de apreciar a vida.

Onde é que gostava de ter vivido? Num lugar chamado Vale do Capão, no interior da Bahia. É muito poderoso!

Quais são os seus autores preferidos?

Clarice Lispector, Carlos Drummond de Andrade… (sou tão ruim de guardar nomes, vamos a outra).

Um herói de ficção que nunca tenha abandonado?

O Homem-Aranha.

E da vida real? Acho que o Dalai Lama.

Qual é o talento natural que não tendo gostaria de ter?

Gostava de ter talento para cozinhar.

Qual é o seu actual estado de espirito?

Aproveitar a vida.

Qual seria uma morte perfeita? Dormindo.

Qual é o seu lema de vida? O meu lema de vida… rapaz são tantos para cada momento… (risos). Tudo passa tão rápido, tudo passa tão intensamente e tão rápido.

Sincerity, strength and gentleness.

What are your favourite qualities in a woman?

Beauty in every sense, gentleness and graciousness… funny I didn’t mention intelligence, isn’t it? (laughter)… maybe beauty in every sense includes that.

What do you most value in a friend?

The ability to have fun.

What do you most enjoy about your work? Interviewing.

Your idea of happiness? Tranquility.

Your idea of unhappiness? Loneliness.

If you could be someone else who would you like to be?

José Saramago, he seemed to me like someone who knew how to enjoy life.

Where would you like to live? In a place called Vale do Capão, in the interior of Bahia. It’s very powerful!

Who are your favourite authors?

Clarice Lispector, Carlos Drummond de Andrade… (I’m useless at remembering names, let’s move on to the next one).

Your favourite hero in fiction? Spiderman.

Your favourite hero in real life?

I think it’s the Dalai Lama.
