Preparing each new edition of WINK begins by choosing some of the many Pestana destinations across the World. Just as important as welcoming, is knowing what our travellers bring back home with them.

WINK is exactly that. A large suitcase that we slowly unpack as we talk of how it was, where we went, what we saw, who we met.

Preparar cada novo número da WINK começa por escolher alguns dos muitos destinos Pestana espalhados pelo Mundo. Tão importante como receber é saber o que os nossos viajantes trouxeram consigo na volta a casa. A WINK é isso mesmo. Uma grande mala de viagem que vamos desfazendo lentamente enquanto contamos como foi, por onde andámos, o que vimos, quem conhecemos.

Este terceiro número da WINK mostra como nos sentimos bem com a grandeza do Mundo. Somos um Hotel em São Paulo mas também somos uma Pousada em Guimarães. Estamos no Algarve, na entrada do Mediterrâneo, mas também em São Tomé e Príncipe, pleno Golfo da Guiné. Saber estar em tantos lugares é saber estar de maneira diferente em cada um deles. O estímulo que recebemos com o nosso Hotel na ultra cosmopolita cidade de São Paulo é diferente do que ganhamos estando em São Tomé, onde a nossa presença funciona como uma âncora para toda a comunidade.

This third edition of WINK shows just how at ease we are with the magnitude of the World. We are a Hotel in São Paulo but we’re also a “Pousada” in Guimarães. We’re in the Algarve, at the entry to the Mediterranean, but also in São Tomé and Principe, in the Gulf of Guinea. Knowing how to be at ease in so many places is knowing how to be different in each one of them. The excitement we feel about our Hotel in the ultra-cosmopolitan city of São Paulo is different from what we feel when we’re in São Tomé, where our presence is an anchor for the whole community.

Carmen Miranda & Groucho Marx Em cada número da WINK fazemos as nossas malas inspirados por um casal famoso. Do Marco de Canaveses a Hollywood, passando pelo Brasil, Carmen Miranda foi um furacão de cor, com uma cabeça cheia de música, ritmo e bananas. Deslumbrou os cariocas, saltou para os Estados Unidos, fez filmes, lançou um estilo e depois apagou-se, cedo com apenas 50 anos. Mas ficaram para sempre os seus chapéus tutti frutti, as plataformas vertiginosas, o excesso de brilho. A moda Primavera-Verão deste ano piscou o olho a Carmen Miranda e as influências estão à vista. Em contraste absoluto de estilo, temos Groucho, o mais famoso dos cómicos irmãos Marx. A sua imagem de marca? Óculos de tartaruga, charuto e laço. Um perfeito “old school” que também volta a ser actual, com a recuperação de peças intemporais do vestuário masculino. Estes dois grandes ícones da cultura popular juntaram-se em 1947, no filme “Copacabana” de Alfred E. Green. E a WINK, voltou a reuni-los nestas páginas cheias de contraste e humor.

In each edition of WINK, we pack our bags inspired by a famous couple. From Marco de Canaveses in Portugal to Hollywood, stopping over in Brazil, Carmen Miranda was a whirlwind of colour, with a head full of music, rhythm and decorated with bananas. She mesmerised the people from Rio, moved to the United States, made films, launched her own style and then died early, at the age of 50. But her tutti frutti hats, the staggering platform heels and her sheer exuberance have remained.

This year’s Spring-Summer fashion winked at Carmen Miranda and the influences are clear. In a completely contrasting style, we have Groucho, the most famous of the comic Marx brothers.

His brand image? Tortoise-frame glasses, cigar and a scarf, perfect old school style that is suddenly fashionable again, with the come back of timeless items of men’s clothing. These two popular culture icons first got together in 1947, in the film “Copacabana” by Alfred E. Green. Now WINK brings them back together on these pages full of contrast and humour.

PESTANA ALVOR PRAIA More than a hotel on the beach, it’s a beach in a hotel É a arte da fuga. Entrar no carro numa sexta-feira à tarde e deixar para trás a cidade e as dúvidas. Com a viagem, as ideias regressarão ao seu lugar certo. O destino recebe-nos ainda com um final de luz e a promessa cumpre-se à nossa frente: o Algarve como foi noutros tempos de praias vazias, dias quentes e noites claras.

O Pestana Alvor Praia conta a história da descoberta deste Algarve. Herdeiro dos primeiros grandes hotéis do Sul de Portugal, foi projectado pelo arquitecto Alberto Cruz em meados da década de 60’. Estes anos míticos do turismo mantêm-se intactos no Pestana Alvor Praia e são revelados nos pormenores dos tectos de madeira trabalhada, nos enormes lustres, na liberdade de movimentos que o amplo espaço de cada quarto oferece. Vive-se o privilégio de uma arquitectura a quem o passar dos anos soube dar critério e elegância, reforçados pelo trabalho sempre intemporal de Pedro Espírito Santo. Escondido no alto das falésias da praia dos Três Irmãos e ligado ao areal por um elevador, o mar é uma obsessão, visto e ouvido em todo os cantos do hotel. Cinco hectares de pinhal e jardim, desenhados pelo paisagista Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles, rodeiam o Pestana Alvor Praia de serenidade. Aqui vive-se do equilíbrio e da reflexão, dos mergulhos na piscina de água salgada, dos almoços mediterrânicos e dos passeios na areia.

It’s the art of getting away. Getting into a car on a Friday afternoon and leaving the city and our cares behind us. The trip will allow all our thoughts and ideas to fall into place. Our destination welcomes us during the last light of the day and our expectations are fulfilled before our eyes: the Algarve as it used to be, with its deserted beaches, hot days and clear nights.

The Pestana Alvor Praia tells the story of the discovery of this Algarve. Heir to the first great hotels of the south of Portugal, it was designed by the architect, Alberto Cruz, in the mid 60s.

These mythical years of tourism remain intact at the Pestana Alvor Praia and are revealed in the details of the carved wooden ceilings, the enormous chandeliers, in the freedom of movement afforded by the ample space of each room. One can enjoy the privilege of an architectural style that has become increasingly elegant over the years, reinforced by Pedro Espírito Santo’s timeless work. Hidden away at the top of the cliffs of the Três Irmãos beach and connected to the beach by a lift, the sea is an obsession, seen and heard from all the corners of the hotel. Five hectares of pine trees and gardens, designed by the landscaper Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles, surround the Pestana Alvor Praia with serenity.

Here we feel a sense of balance in a place where we can meditate, enjoy swims in the salt water pool, eat Mediterranean lunches and take walks across the sands.

Na República Francesa as artes são um assunto quase dinástico e o nome Cassel é o apelido de uma dessas famílias em que o talento passa de pais para filhos. Vincent — filho de Jean-Pierre Cassel, actor, irmão de Cécile Cassel, actriz, e marido de Monica Bellucci, também ela actriz. De Paris, no meio do entusiasmo à volta da sua nova vida no Rio de Janeiro, falou-nos do seu maior luxo: a liberdade de viajar sem guião.

In the French Republic, the arts are almost a dynastic subject and the name Cassel is the surname of one of those families where talent runs in their veins. Vincent – son of Jean-Pierre Cassel, actor, brother of Cécile Cassel, actress, and husband of Monica Bellucci, also an actress. From Paris, amidst all the enthusiasm of his new life in Rio de Janeiro, he spoke to us about his biggest luxury: the freedom to travel without a script.

WINK: Como estás tu Vincent?

VINCENT CASSEL: Muito bem, e tu?

WINK: How are you Vincent?

VINCENT CASSEL: Very well, and you?

W: Muito bem também. Mas a sério, como estás tu?

V: Estou a preparar a minha grande mudança para o Brasil, por isso estou muito contente.

W: Very well too. But seriously, how are you?

V: I’m preparing my big move to Brazil so I’m very happy.

W: Can you introduce yourself ?

V: My name’s Vincent Cassel (as if by magic, Vincent Cassel switches to Portuguese) I’m a French actor… Do you want me to speak in English, French or Portuguese?

W: Achas que te consegues apresentar?

V: Chamo-me Vincent Cassel [passe de mágica, Vincent Cassel começa a falar em português] sou um actor francês…

Queres que fale em inglês, francês ou português?

W: As you wish.

V: So, in Portuguese then! I’m a French actor who lives in Paris but who is a Brazilian at heart.

W: Como tu quiseres.

V: Então em português! Sou um actor francês que mora em Paris mas que é brasileiro de coração.

W: What is your earliest travel memory?

V: I’m not sure, but I remember being very young and going to Reunion Island. I never went back there. Wait! The first trip that I remember was to Barbados, in the Caribbean. I must have been about 2… and when I went back, when I was about 39, I recognized places.

W: Qual é a tua primeira memória de viagens?

V: Não tenho a certeza, mas lembro-me de ser muito novo e de ir à ilha da Reunião. Nunca mais lá voltei. Espera! A primeira viagem de que me lembro foi às Barbados, nas Caraíbas. Devia ter uns dois anos… e quando lá voltei, para aí com 39 anos, reconheci os sítios.

W: No way!

V: I swear to God. I found the house I had stayed at. I called my mother to tell her I had recognized the house. She thought it was impossible too, but I’m sure it was that one.

W: Não!

V: Juro por Deus. Até encontrei a casa onde tinha ficado.

Liguei à minha Mãe a contar que tinha reconhecido a tal casa. Ela também achou impossível, mas eu tenho a certeza de que era aquela.

W: Do you have certain routines when you first get to a hotel room?

V: I like a wide bed, a view and freedom… If there are a lot of rules, like no smoking, or you can’t receive any visitors, then I leave and choose another hotel.

W: Tens hábitos de sempre quando chegas a um quarto de hotel?

V: Gosto de uma cama larga, de uma vista e de liberdade…

Se há muitas regras do género não se poder fumar, não se poder receber ninguém, aí vou-me embora e escolho outro hotel.

W: Are there things that you do at a hotel that you would never do at home?

V: No… Of course the difference is you can ask for breakfast in bed. At home, I have to prepare it myself…

W: E há coisas que tu fazes num hotel que não fazes em tua casa?

V: Não… Talvez claro a diferença de poder pedir um pequeno-almoço na cama. Em minha casa vou eu prepará-lo…

W: Imagine that you are arriving at a hotel room, what’s the first thing you do?

V: I go to the window, look at the view, open the window and turn off the air conditioning. Ah, and I look for a Wi-Fi network connection.

W: Imagina que estás a chegar a um quarto de hotel. Qual é a primeira coisa que fazes?

V: Vou até à janela, espreito a vista, abro a janela e desligo o ar condicionado. Ah, e procuro uma rede Wi-Fi.

W: Have you ever lost something at a hotel?

V: Yes, maybe, but nothing of any great value. Maybe a phone, but nowadays you can delete everything from a distance, so nothing of great value.

W: Já perdeste alguma coisa num hotel?

V: Talvez sim, mas coisas sem grande valor. Talvez um telefone, mas hoje em dia consegues apagar tudo à distância, por isso, nada de grande valor.

W: How does travelling affect your work as an actor, the creative process of playing a role?

V: I think one of the biggest luxuries is being able to travel without a script, without any great plans. I’d say that I am the way I am because I was always able to travel a lot, because I continue to travel a lot.

W: Como é que a viagem afecta o teu trabalho como actor, o processo criativo de representar um papel?

V: Acho que o maior de todos os luxos é poder viajar sem um guião, sem grandes planos. Diria que sou como sou porque pude viajar muito, porque continuo a viajar muito.

Insistimos em ver esta cidade pela maneira fácil. A maior, a mais rica, a mais povoada, a do frio de Inverno e calor de Verão num único dia, a da Bovespa e do Estadão, ou seja, a da maior praça financeira e do mais importante jornal da América do Sul, a cidade da semana da moda, do céu aberto aos helicópteros, das avenidas imensas e do horizonte de arranha-céus. Tudo isto é muito São Paulo mas, com o tempo certo, consegue-se descobrir que por detrás de tudo isto fica a rua e os paulistas, gente que responde e se defende da escala urbana reconhecendo-se e tratando-se pelo nome, gente que depois dos anos de crime sem perdão, hoje aquietado pelo sucesso económico e social do novo Brasil, enche lojas, mercados, jardins, livrarias, bares e restaurantes fora de horas.

São Paulo tem o que outras pouquíssimas cidades têm — contam-se Nova Iorque, Londres, talvez ainda Paris — que é serem a versão moderna de Babel, cidades livres e prósperas que se construíram a partir da hipótese da diversidade. O Brasil é desde há muito tempo um país de chegada e São Paulo foi durante todo o século XX procurado por italianos, judeus, japoneses, arménios, libaneses, coreanos, sírios, portugueses, gente que partiu de países cansados e que aqui desembarcou com sangue novo para trabalhar e viver. Estas comunidades são hoje fortíssimas e são elas a identidade desta cidade. A cor de diversidade que São Paulo terá tido com estas chegadas é agora substituída pela confusão de tribos urbanas — todas elas, tal como em Nova Iorque, Londres, talvez ainda Paris — que aqui se misturam nos seus estilos e percursos, e se encontram através de uma língua comum, o Português.

We insisted on seeing this city the easiest way. The largest, richest and most densely populated city, experiencing both the cold of winter and the heat of summer on a single day, the city of Bovespa and the Estadão, in other words, the largest financial centre and the most important newspaper in South America, the fashion week, its sky open to helicopters, its huge avenues and its horizon of skyscrapers. All of this is very much São Paulo but, with enough time, you can discover that behind all of this are streets and “Paulistas”, people who respond and defend themselves from the sheer scale of the city; they recognise each other and call each other by their names, these people, who after years of witnessing unceasing crime, are now calmer thanks to the economic and social success of the new Brazil, who fill shops, markets, gardens, book shops, bars, after hours restaurants and bars.

São Paulo has what very few others do – New York, London and maybe Paris are the only others – being viewed as the modern versions of Babel, free and prosperous cities that are built on the option of diversity. For a long time, Brazil has been a destination, and during the whole of the past century, São Paulo was sought after by Italians, Jews, Japanese, Armenians, Lebanese, Koreans, Syrians, and Portuguese, people who had left their worn out countries and who landed here with fresh blood and a will to work and live. Nowadays these communities are extremely strong and are São Paulo’s identity. The colourful diversity of São Paulo upon arrival of the immigrants has now been replaced by the mixing together of urban tribes. Just as in New York, London and maybe Paris, these communities with their differences in style and background all blend together here, and are brought together through a common language: Portuguese.

A Capital Europeia da Cultura é uma iniciativa da União Europeia, idealizada por Melina Mercouri, antiga ministra da Cultura Grega, em 1985. Guimarães é a terceira cidade portuguesa, depois de Lisboa, 1994, e Porto, 2001, a ostentar este título. Guimarães, cidade da fundação da nacionalidade portuguesa, assistiu em 1128 ao reconhecimento de D. Afonso Henriques como primeiro rei de Portugal. Hoje, Guimarães é sede de um concelho densamente povoado por mais de 160 mil pessoas e também um dos mais jovens de toda a Europa: quase metade dos seus habitantes tem menos de 30 anos de idade.

Em 2001 a UNESCO reconheceu o esforço de reabilitação do centro histórico da cidade atribuindo-lhe o selo de Património Cultural da Humanidade.É uma cidade orgulhosa do seu património e atenta à sua história. A candidatura Capital Europeia da Cultura foi assente nos valores “Cidade”, “Cidadania e Participação” e “Dimensão Europeia”, sendo uma candidatura que se transformou em realidade em Maio de 2009. Uma equipa de programação deitou mãos à obra e neste ano de 2012 Guimarães acolhe um grande encontro de criadores e criações — música, cinema, fotografia, artes plásticas, arquitectura, literatura, pensamento, teatro, dança, artes de rua.

Em Guimarães vão-se cruzar os produtos artísticos imaginados e gerados pelos seus residentes com os que de toda a Europa afluirão à cidade. Ao longo de um ano, a cidade será promotora da diversidade cultural que caracteriza a Europa, dando a conhecer as suas manifestações culturais e acolhendo as de outros países, tentando dar corpo à missão enunciada pelo projecto Guimarães 2012: envolver toda a comunidade e desse envolvimento retirar energia criativa para cidade sob a forma de regeneração urbana, social e económica, e “consolidando os seus recursos e oferta cultural e criando na memória e nas aspirações das pessoas uma nova dinâmica e uma alargada paisagem cultural, mudando a forma como estas vêem o mundo”.

The European Capital of Culture is a European Union Initiative, created in 1985 by Melina Mercouri, the former Greek Minister of Culture.

Guimarães is now the third Portuguese city, after Lisbon, in 1994 and Porto, in 2001, to hold this title.

It was in Guimarães, the city where the Portuguese nation was born, that D. Afonso Henriques was recognised, in 1128, as the first king of Portugal. Today, Guimarães is home to a densely populated municipality, with more than 160 thousand inhabitants and is also one of the youngest cities in the whole of Europe; almost half of its inhabitants are under 30 years of age.

In 2001, UNESCO recognised the restoration works of the city’s historic centre, granting it the title of Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

It is a city that is proud of its heritage and history. Its bid for the European Capital of Culture was based on the values of “City”, “Citizenship and Participation” and “European Dimension”, with the bid becoming a reality in May 2009. A team of organisers got down to work and this year, Guimarães hosts a grand get-together of creators and their creations – music, cinema, plastic arts, architecture, literature, thought, theatre, dance and street arts.

In Guimarães, works of art created and developed by its residents will mix with those coming from all over Europe, flocking to the city. Throughout the year, the city will promote European cultural diversity, showing its own cultural displays and welcoming those from other countries as they endeavour to fulfil the mission proclaimed by the Guimarães 2012 project: to involve the whole community and through this involvement, to extract creative energy for the city through urban, social and economic regeneration and “consolidating its resources and cultural contributions, creating in the memory and aspirations of people, a new dynamic and broadened cultural landscape, changing the way they see the world”.

É uma história muito antiga que nos lembra que Portugal é ele próprio muito antigo. Uma história que se conta pelo passar dos séculos no antigo mosteiro da Costa e das suas antigas celas onde hoje se dorme, do monástico refeitório onde antigas receitas vêm aos nossos dias com detalhes de nova cozinha, dos silenciosos corredores que infelizmente não falam.

It’s a very ancient story that reminds us that Portugal itself is very ancient. A story told through the passage of centuries at the ancient Costa Monastery, in its ancient cells where one still sleeps today, in the monastic refectory where ancient recipes have been passed down to us with a touch of modern cuisine and in the silent corridors that unfortunately do not speak.

Inclinada sob a cidade de Guimarães chegamos à Pousada de Santa Marinha. A grandeza do edifício que chegou aos dias de hoje não anula a emoção com que se descobre, aqui e ali, testemunhos do tempo que passou. Esse sopro chega-nos pela humildade do períodos Moçárabe e Românico dos claustros, mas também pelo esplendor do Renascimento e do Barroco, numa viagem pela História da Arte que nos traz até à intervenção mais recente do arquitecto Fernando Távora. As referências à raiz deste edifício adensam-se com o ano de 1154 e com a vontade de uma nobre senhora, a mulher de D. Afonso Henriques, D. Mafalda, em entregar o mosteiro aos Cónegos Regrantes de Santo Agostinho. Na varanda de Frei Jerónimo, que remata o vasto corredor da Pousada, os painéis de azulejos contam-nos, entre o murmúrio da água, os outros dois capítulos mais relevantes desta narrativa. Num deles, a expressão de D. Jaime, Duque de Bragança, a entregar o mosteiro da Costa à Ordem de São Jerónimo. No outro, o retrato de dois jovens atentos à lição de Frei Jorge de Belém, relato da criação por D. João III do colégio onde estudariam D. Duarte, seu filho, e D. António, filho do infante D. Luís e futuro Prior do Crato.

A Revolução Liberal de 1834 decretaria o fim das ordens religiosas e as sucessivas mudanças de mão do edifício que terá sido propriedade do fundador da fábrica Vista Alegre mas também de outras ricas famílias, numa atribulação que só terminaria quando em 1931 os Jesuítas regressaram a Portugal, aqui instalando um seminário. Em 1951 um incêndio destruiu toda a ala nobre, detendo-se apenas na sala do Capítulo e na varanda de Frei Jerónimo. Duas décadas depois, em 1972, o edifício foi comprado pelo Estado que o adaptou a Pousada. As obras iniciaram-se em 1975 sob a responsabilidade do arquitecto Fernando Távora que, sem perder de vista a escala do edifício original soube quebrar a vastidão do espaço monástico com áreas que apelam ao bem-estar moderno.

Um dos grandes encantos que os dias de descanso na Pousada de Santa Marinha pode oferecer é esta conversa com o passado. Longe de querer sugerir qualquer assombração, até parece que à saída da piscina encontrámos D. Mafalda ou que, no bar junto à lareira, trocámos dois dedos de conversa com D. António.

Overlooking the city of Guimarães, we reached the Pousada Santa Marinha. The splendour of the building that has lasted until today does not take away the emotion one feels on discovering, here and there, evidences of the past. This is brought to us through the simplicity of the Mozarabic and Roman cloisters but also through a journey that leads us up to all the splendour of the Renaissance and the Baroque, in a journey through History of Art that takes us to the most recent work by the architect Fernando Távora. References to the origin of this building date back to the year 1154 and the wish of a lady, the wife of D. Afonso Henriques, D. Mafalda to donate the monastery to the Regular Canons of Saint Augustin. On the veranda of Friar Jerónimo, at the end of the vast corridor of the Pousada, the tiled panels tell stories, amidst the murmur of the water, of the other two most relevant chapters of this narrative. In one of them, the significance of D. Jaime, Duke of Bragança, in handing over the Costa Monastery to the Order of St. Jerome. On the other, two youths attentively listening to a class given by Frei Jorge de Belém, a creation account by D. João III of the school where D. Duarte, his son, and D. António, son of Infant D. Luís and future Prior of Crato, would come to study.

The Liberal Revolution of 1834 was to decree the end of religious orders, and the successive changes in the ownership of the building which once belonged to the founder of the Vista Alegre factory but also to other wealthy families, led to much tribulation which was to end only in 1931 when the Jesuits returned to Portugal and set up a seminary here. In 1951, a fire destroyed the whole of the noble wing, where only the Capítulo room and the Frei Jerónimo veranda were saved. Two decades later, in 1972, it was bought by the state to be adapted into a Pousada. The works began in 1975, under the responsibility of Fernando Távora, who, without losing sight of the scale of the original building, was able to break down the vast Monastic space into areas that appeal to modern well-being. One of the most enchanting things about spending some days resting at the Pousada de Santa Marinha is this encounter with the past. I’m not suggesting that the place is haunted, it even seems as though we could find D. Mafalda leaving the pool or have a chat with D. António by the fireplace in the bar.

For «The Castle in 3 Acts», the Guimarães 2012 series of exhibitions, Gabriel Abrantes re-read «The Birds» by Aristophanes and based on this, produced the very cutting edge short film «Birds». It was at the century-old Pousada de Santa Marinha that Filipe Vargas spoke to the director about the films that brought them both together and other films which are sure to come.

Para o «O Castelo em 3 Actos», ciclo de exposições de Guimarães 2012, Gabriel Abrantes releu «Os Pássaros» de Aristófanes e a partir daí realizou o actualíssimo «Birds». Foi na centenária Pousada de Santa Marinha que Filipe Vargas falou com o realizador sobre os filmes que os juntaram e os que hão-de vir.

Por onde começar a falar de Gabriel Abrantes? Pelo trabalho que fizemos juntos? Pela primeira vez, a video-instalação «Too Many Daddies, Mommies and Babies», uma história de índios da Amazónia e barrigas de aluguer, que ganhou o prémio EDP Novos Artistas de 2009? Ou pela última vez que o fizemos, na curta-metragem «Fratelli», um divertimento inspirado pelo «The Tamming of the Shrew de Shakespeare», filmado em Roma? Ou falando da nossa próxima colaboração, «Tristes Monroes», a sua primeira longa-metragem? Comecemos pelas apresentações.

Gabriel Abrantes nasceu em 1984 na Carolina do Norte, EUA. Filho de pais portugueses, mudou-se aos 18 anos para Nova Iorque, onde estudou cinema e artes visuais na The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. Mudou-se de seguida para França, primeiro Paris e a École Nationale de Beaux-Arts, e depois Tourcoing, para uma pós-graduação no Le Frenesoy Studio National des Arts Contemporains. Só a seguir veio Portugal, de onde é a família. Do norte, do Minho. Mas é português? É americano? É as duas coisas. Assim como não se pode dizer se é pintor ou realizador. É as duas coisas. No princípio, era a pintura.

E depois de algumas exposições e boas críticas, foi a venda dos quadros que financiou as incursões pelo cinema. Um cinema experimental, em película de 16mm, e a um ritmo impressionante: oito curtas em apenas três anos, a maioria premiada em festivais internacionais. E não pára. Tanto o podemos encontrar no atelier de Lisboa a preparar a sua individual de pintura para o final deste ano, como no Haiti, onde rodará a primeira longa-metragem, como aqui, em Guimarães, onde foi convidado a participar na Capital Europeia da Cultura. Esta é uma pequena amostra do frenesi criativo de Gabriel Abrantes, quando ainda está presente a sua participação no Festival de Cinema de Veneza em 2011, para o qual o filme «Palácios da Pena» foi seleccionado. E antes disso, o Leopardo de Ouro, no Festival de Locarno, conseguido com «A History of Mutual Respect», filmado no Brasil, entre edifícios do arquitecto Oscar Niemeyer e as quedas de água do Iguaçu.

Assim de grandioso. Para Gabriel Abrantes não há barreiras, há um caminho de ideias. Mas haverá uma ideia central? Talvez a da abordagem acutilante e descomplexada aos choques culturais, geracionais e raciais, onde quer que estes aconteçam. Portugal, Haiti, Itália, Brasil, mas também Angola, onde filmou «Liberdade», uma espécie de Romeu e Julieta da nova ordem mundial,

o retrato da relação possível entre um angolano e uma chinesa.

Como sempre, o dedo na ferida é mostrado com igual dose de ingenuidade e perversão. Mas para mim, a obra que aglutina o mundo de Gabriel Abrantes é «Palácios da Pena». Aí cabe tudo: a herança do neo-realismo, ao retratar um episódio da inquisição em Portugal; as referências aos filmes americanos de adolescentes, com intrigas palacianas protagonizadas por raparigas em combustão; e o imaginário dos filmes-catástrofe, com um incêndio de enormes proporções e cânticos islâmicos de fundo. Mas agora, o que se segue, é uma visita à capela onde D. Afonso Henriques foi baptizado, para assistir a «Birds», a obra feita exclusivamente para Guimarães, uma adaptação livre da peça Os «Pássaros», de Aristófanes, filmada no Haiti e interpretada por não-actores locais vestidos com trajes tradicionais de aves. Definitivamente, um dos pontos altos desta Capital Europeia da Cultura 2012.

What can I say about Gabriel Abrantes? Where should I begin? By the work we did together? Starting, for example, with the “Too many daddies, mommies and babies” video installation, a story about Amazonian Indians and surrogates, which was awarded the 2009 EDP New Artists prize? Or by the most recent work we did together, “Fratelli”, an entertaining short film inspired by Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew”, shot in Rome last year? Or looking to the future, at our next joint effort, “Tristes Monroes”, his first feature film? Let’s begin with the introductions. Gabriel Abrantes was born in 1984 in North Carolina in the USA. Son of Portuguese parents, he moved to New York when he was 18 where he studied Cinema and Visual Arts at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. He then moved to France, first Paris, where he frequented the École Nationale de Beaux-Arts, and later Tourcoing, for a post-graduate course at Le Fresnoy Studio National des Arts Contemporains, that he completed in 2008. Only after this did he come to Portugal, where his family is from. But is he Portuguese? Is he American? He’s both. Likewise, you can’t say that he is just a painter or just a director. He’s both. In the beginning it was painting. After some exhibitions with good reviews, it was by selling his paintings that he was able to finance his forays into cinema. It was experimental cinema, always filmed in 16mm format and at an impressive rate: eight short films, most of which obtained awards at international festivals, all in a period of just over three years, and he hasn’t stopped. He can be found anywhere, either at his 49

atelier in Lisbon, preparing his large individual painting exhibition planned for the end of this year, or in Haiti where he will be shooting his first feature film, or even here, in Guimarães, where he was invited to create an exclusive work for the European Capital of Culture. This is an example of the unstoppable creative frenzy of Gabriel Abrantes, when his presence and participation in the 2011 edition of the Venice Film Festival, at which his film “Palácios de Pena” was selected, is still fresh in our minds. Before that, in 2010, it was “A History of Mutual Respect” that won him an award, The Gold Leopard, at the Locarno Film Festival: filmed in Brazil amidst buildings designed by the architect Oscar Niemeyer and the Iguaçu Falls. That grand! There are no barriers for Gabriel Abrantes, and he leaves a trail of ideas. But is there a central theme? Maybe it’s his sharp, complex-free approach to cultural, generational and racial shocks, wherever they may be. Portugal, Haiti, Italy, Brazil, but also Angola, where he filmed “Liberdade”,

a kind of Romeo and Juliette of the new order of the world, a portrayal of the possible relationship between an Angolan man and a Chinese woman. Once again the finger on the sore point is shown with the same dose of ingenuity and perversion. For me, the best example of his work, the one that sums up Gabriel Abrantes’ world, is “Palácios da Pena”: the inheritance of neo-realism, when portraying an episode from the Portuguese Inquisition; the references to American teenager films, with monumental intrigues whose protagonists are twisted preteen girls; and all the imagery of tragedy films, with a fire of enormous proportions and Islamic chanting in the background. But now, what follows, is a visit to the chapel where the first Portuguese king was baptised, to watch “Birds”, a work created exclusively for Guimarães, a free adaptation of “The Birds” by Aristophanes, filmed in Haiti and interpreted by non-actor locals wearing traditional birds costumes.

Definitely one of the highlights of the European Capital of Culture.

Inês Gonçalves nasceu em Málaga. Entre 1984 e 1986 frequentou o Photographic Training Centre, em Londres. Trabalhou como fotógrafa para o semanário «O Independente» e foi editora de Fotografia da revista «Kapa». Fez livros com Catarina Portas, Alfredo Saramago, Alexandre Melo, entre outros. Em 2010 o livro «Moderno Tropical - Arquitectura em Angola e Moçambique 1948-1975», venceu o prestigiado DAM Architectural Book Award. Como realizadora de documentários tem filmado em Angola e, ultimamente, em São Tomé e Príncipe, onde vive parte do ano. As ilhas têm inspirado e influenciado grandemente o seu trabalho e para este número, a WINK escolheu estas duas fotografias do seu impressionante portfolio.

Inês Gonçalves was born in Malaga, Spain. Between 1984 and 1986 she attended the Photographic Training Centre, in London. She worked as a photographer for the “O Independente” weekly newspaper and was Photography Editor of “Kapa” magazine. She co-authored books with Catarina Portas, Alfredo Saramago, Alexandre Melo, among others. In 2010 the book, «Moderno Tropical - Arquitectura em Angola e Moçambique 19481975», won the prestigious DAM Architectural Book Award. As director of documentaries, she has filmed in Angola and, more recently, in São Tomé and Príncipe, where she spends part of the year. The islands have greatly inspired and influenced her work and for this edition, WINK chose these two photographs from her impressive portfolio.

Um pequeno arquipélago de duas ilhas vulcânicas — São Tomé e o Príncipe — encavalitadas em cima da linha do Equador o que, neste isolamento a que a geografia e o acaso o condenaram, significa também estar fora das rotas do turismo convencional e ser nos dias de hoje um dos últimos paraísos sob a Terra.

Um cão perfila-se para nos receber nas escadas de desembarque. A espera permite cigarros, as primeiras fotografias, o choque frontal com uma atmosfera húmida, quente, pesada. O que já nos tinham contado sobre São Tomé, e que iremos perceber ao longo destes dias, é que com a rapidez com que nasce o Sol, despertam também as pessoas.

Ainda não são sete da manhã e já está tudo na rua. Miúdos a caminho da escola, mulheres a caminho do mercado, homens a caminho das plantações.

começam a anunciar o início do dia na Europa e o começo do trabalho aqui. Os pequenos-almoços do Pestana São Tomé mostram onde estamos: fruta pão, jaca, goiaba, manga, banana-maçã, carambola, safu. Estamos na fertilidade dos trópicos.

A saída para a cidade de São Tomé faz-se pela avenida principal, poiso da maioria das embaixadas e representações oficiais. Carros, motas e gente a pé avançam para o sentido das suas vidas. Por milhares de dobras, a moeda local, tudo se compra. O câmbio não é evidente mas milhares de dobras equivalem a poucos euros.

Alguém dizia que era nestas últimas presenças do que foi o império que se consegue perceber finalmente o sentido de Portugal. Tantos anos depois, é uma emoção ouvir a familiaridade dos apelidos, dos nomes das ruas, da arquitectura. Perceber que os sinos dobram com a mesma cadência.

The unequivocal sign of light below us announces daybreak. As we descend and having gone through a blanket of clouds, the first view is the sea, then a small, uninhabited island a little further on, the Ana Chaves Bay, followed by the airstrip.

The Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe, a former Portuguese colony in the Gulf of Guinea, is the second smallest country in Africa. A small archipelago of two volcanic islands, São Tomé and Príncipe, standing on the line of the equator, condemned to isolation by geography and chance, also means that it is off the conventional tourist trail and is nowadays one of the last paradises on earth.

A dog appears and greets us as we step off the plane. The wait gives us time for a cigarette, to take the first photos, to become accustomed to the head-on shock of the humid, hot and heavy atmosphere.

What we had been told about São Tomé and what we would see over the next few days is that people rise just as quickly as the sun does. It is not yet 7:00am and everyone is out and about. Children on their way to school, women walking to the market and men on their way to the plantations.

Pestana São Tomé is not just a hotel; it’s a living room for a whole country. Breakfast, after a quick shower, is a get-together of different countries and languages, diplomats, foreign investors and do-gooders. The ipads and Blackberries announce the day’s start in Europe and the start of work here.

The breakfast at the Pestana São Tomé indicates where we are: breadfruit, jackfruit, guavas, mangos, apple bananas, star apples and safu. We are in the fertile lands of the tropics.

The way out to the city of São Tomé is along a main avenue, home to embassies and other official representations. Cars, motorbikes and people on foot go about their day to day. With thousands of dobras, the local currency, you can buy everything. The exchange rate isn’t clear but thousands of dobras are only worth a few euros.

Someone used to say that it was in these last vestiges of the Empire that you can finally understand the meaning of Portugal. So many years later, it’s a joy to hear the familiar surnames and street names, to see the familiar architecture. To find out that the bells ring in the same rhythm.

Less than an hour from the city, the São Tomé Botanical Gardens are a moving place, a live archive and catalogue of these Islands’ flora. On the previous page, an immense greenhouse of orchids is an unforgettable sight.

A CAMINHO DAS ROLAS ON THE ROAD TO ROLAS ISLAND É a estrada nacional 2 e é também o caminho das roças, antigas fazendas de café e cacau que deram fortuna a uns, tristeza a outros, e que contam a história destas ilhas.

A dureza do caminho põe-nos em sentido. O que conta é saber ultrapassar a selva, essa perfeita criação de Deus que ocupa cada centímetro de terra disponível. Quando os portugueses descobriram as ilhas de São Tomé e Príncipe (1470-1471), encontraram-nas desabitadas e cobertas de vegetação. A introdução da cana do açúcar chegou a ser a principal fonte de riqueza das ilhas, juntamente com a pimenta e o comércio de escravos (provenientes da região do Golfo da Guiné). Mais tarde, no século XVIII, foi introduzido o café, e só na segunda metade do século XIX foi trazida para as ilhas a cultura do cacau, tendo sido São Tomé o principal exportador mundial.

It’s national highway 2 and also the way to the plantations, the former coffee and cocoa farms that brought fortunes to some, sadness to others, and that tell the story of these islands.

The tough journey prepares us. What’s important is to know how to overcome the jungle, God’s perfect creation that occupies every centimetre of available land. When the Portuguese discovered the islands of São Tomé and Príncipe (1470-1471), they found them uninhabited and covered in vegetation. The introduction of sugar cane came to be the main source of wealth for the islands, together with pepper and the slave trade (from the Gulf of Guinea region). Later, in the 18th century, coffee was introduced and it wasn’t until the second half of the 19th century that cocoa cultivation was brought to the islands, with São Tomé becoming the world’s main exporter.

To get there, we set-off from Porto Alegre and crossed the sea that separated us, accompanied by small wooden motorboats that head in the direction of the shoals of fish. Cláudio Corallo chegou ao Congo em 1974. Vinha de Florença, tinha 23 anos e um curso de Agronomia Tropical. Começou por trabalhar no café. Primeiro no cultivo, depois como corretor. No Congo comprou duas plantações abandonadas. Iria produzir café. Se não fosse a guerra talvez lá estivesse ainda. Abandonou o país no último momento, já a sua família estava a salvo em São Tomé e Príncipe há quatro anos. Perderam tudo. Por causa de umas sementes antigas, oferecidas pela sua ex-mulher e parceira neste negócio, São Tomé esteve sempre no seu horizonte.

A fama do cacau e do café são tomense era justa. Decidiram ficar e começar do zero, acreditando na suprema qualidade do que a natureza ali lhes dá.

Em São Tomé, onde quase tudo está por fazer, o nome Corallo equivale ao de uma espécie de milagre. Ano após ano a aperfeiçoar o cultivo e a fermentação do cacau são tomense, Claudio Corallo conseguiu transformá-lo no melhor chocolate do Mundo.

Cláudio Corallo moved to Congo in 1974. He was 23, had studied Tropical Agronomy and came from Florence. He started off working with coffee. First cultivating it and later as a coffee broker. In Congo he bought two abandoned coffee plantations. He was going to produce coffee. If it weren’t for the war, he would probably still be there. He left Congo at the last minute, when his family had already been safe and sound, in São Tomé and Príncipe, for four years. They lost everything.

Thanks to some old seeds his ex-wife and long-term business partner had given him, São Tomé was always on his horizon.

The fame of São Tomé cocoa and coffee was justified. They decided to stay and start from scratch, believing in the supreme quality that nature there had to offer them.

In São Tomé, where there is still so much to be done, the Corallo name is associated to a kind of miracle. For over 20 years, Claudio Corallo perfected the cultivation and fermentation of the São Tomé cocoa, transforming it into the best chocolate in the world.
