Portugal é mundialmente conhecido por vários factores: o nosso enérgico futebol, o nostálgico fado, o sol constante, a arte de receber. É nesta arte que entra um dos nossos principais trunfos: a culinária. A cozinha portuguesa tanto é mestre na preparação de carne como de peixe, na confecção de pratos simples como elaborados, na exploração de sabores tradicionais e na descoberta de novos paladares.

Invoco a nossa riqueza culinária como exemplo por também esta reflectir a dedicação que pomos em cada momento da vida dos nossos hotéis e Pousadas de Portugal. Essa dedicação consegue-se com décadas de aperfeiçoamento, pesquisa, ensinamentos e aprendizagens.

Das ruas eclécticas de Londres à herança histórica de Viseu. Da surpreendente modernidade de Berlim ao luxo clássico da Madeira. Do charme actual de Estoi ao ar de outros tempos de Queluz.

Neste número da WINK andámos à procura de novas sensações, de novas experiências, de novas sugestões para si. Venha connosco nesta viagem ao mundo Pestana.

Começámos por fazer as nossas malas inspirados pelo estilo (pelo grande estilo) de Steve McQueen e Ali McGraw e partimos à descoberta.

Primeiro aterrámos em Londres e instalámo-nos no Pestana Chelsea Bridge Hotel & SPA, um hotel mesmo no centro da nova vida da capital inglesa, que se prepara a grande velocidade para os Jogos Olímpicos de 2012. Percorremos a cidade a pé e de metro, encontrámos amigos, descobrimos sítios secretos e redescobrimos os mais famosos pontos turísticos. Porque há sempre uma forma diferente de olhar para o que já se conhece. De volta ao hotel, ficámos boquiabertos com a vista do terraço, com um gin & tonic na mão e Londres a perder de vista.

Em Viseu, fomos a um original casamento numa das maiores Pousadas de Portugal, instalada no imponente edifício do antigo hospital da cidade. No dia seguinte, munidos de eficazes óculos de sol, explorámos o comércio local, as maravilhosas pastelarias, os recomendadíssimos restaurantes e recarregámos energias para o nosso próximo destino: Berlim.

O recém-inaugurado Pestana Berlin Tiergarten Hotel é uma surpresa tão grande como a cidade: o fundo do mar projectado no chão do lobby, o som dos oceanos nos elevadores e as lareiras virtuais no bar dão lugar, mal saímos do hotel, a casas que são na realidade lojas, restaurantes que são na realidade salas de concerto, o moderno que é na realidade antigo e vice-versa. Entendemos finalmente a afirmação de Jack Lang, antigo ministro da Cultura francês, que disse que “Paris será sempre Paris e Berlim nunca será Berlim”, porque é uma cidade que se transforma todos os dias.

E, mudando radicalmente de cenário, voámos até à ilha da Madeira, o melhor destino para passar um réveillon em grande. Sumptuosamente instalados no Pestana Casino Park, criámos uma história com a modelo Ella e com aquela que é para nós um autêntico ícone de estilo: Catarina Prietzel.

Tantas viagens, tantos destinos, acabaram por nos abrir o apetite. Fomos aos melhores sítios para satisfazer a nossa vontade de sabores do mar e do campo: xerém de conquilhas preparado na Pousada de Faro, Palácio de Estoi, e a famosa perdiz à Cozinha Velha na Pousada D. Maria I, em Queluz.

EsCaDaRIa Da POUsaDa DE FaRO, PaláCIO DE EsTOI

From the eclectic roads of London to the historic heritage of Viseu. From the surprising modernity of Berlin to the classic luxury of Madeira. From the modern charm of Estoi to the ancient times of Queluz. In this edition of WINK we went in search of new sensations, new experiences, new suggestions for you. Join us on this journey to the Pestana world.

We begin by packing our suitcases inspired by the style, the great style, of Steve McQueen and Ali McGraw and set off to discover.

First we land in London and settle in at the Pestana Chelsea Bridge Hotel & Spa, a hotel right in the centre of the British capital’s new life, preparing, at high speed, for the 2012 Olympic Games. We get around the city on foot and by tube, we meet friends, discover secret places and rediscover the most wellknown sites because there’s always a new way of looking at what one already knows. Back at the hotel, our jaws drop when we sit on the terrace, sipping a gin and tonic, overlooking the fabulous view of London.

In Viseu we attended an original wedding in one of the largest Pousadas de Portugal, set in the impressive building of the city’s former hospital. The following day, armed with good sunglasses, we explored the local shopping area, the marvellous pastry shops, the highly recommended restaurants and recharged our batteries, ready for our next destination, Berlin.

The recently inaugurated Berlin Tiergarten Hotel is as surprising as the city itself: the bottom of the sea projected on the lobby’s floor, the sound of the ocean in the lifts and the virtual fireplaces in the bar give way, as we leave the hotel, to houses that are in fact shops, restaurants that are in fact concert halls, the modern that is in fact ancient and vice-versa. We finally understand the statement by Jack Lang, the former Minister of Finance, who said that “Paris will always be Paris and Berlin will never be Berlin”, because it’s a city that changes every day.

Next, radically changing scenario, we fly to the Island of Madeira, the best place to spend New Year’s Eve. Sumptuously installed in the Hotel Pestana Casino Park, we created a story with the model Ella and, who we believe is, the true style icon, Catarina Prietzel.

So many journeys, so many destinations, whetted our appetite.

We went to the best places to satisfy our desire for seafood and countryside delicacies: Cornmeal and Clams at the Pousada de Faro, Palácio de Estoi and the famous Partridge at the Pousada D. Maria I in Queluz.

Em cada número da WINK fazemos as nossas malas inspirados por um casal famoso da história. Uma viagem por estilos diferentes e um shopping feito à medida de quem nos inspira. Queremos também inspirá-lo na sua próxima viagem.

Foi em 1972, durante a rodagem de Os Implacáveis, que Steve McQueen e Ali MacGraw se conheceram. Ele tinha 42 e era já famoso e conhecido como “the king of cool”. Ela tinha 34 anos e uma nomeação para os Óscares pelo desempenho em Love Story. O filme que os juntou, realizado por Sam Peckinpah, tinha a mistura exacta das doses necessárias de tensão, perigo e amor, para que as emoções das personagens passassem para a vida real. Acabada a rodagem, McQueen terminou o seu casamento para ficar com Ali, que também deixaria o seu marido. Livres das suas vidas anteriores, Steve e Ali dedicaram-se um ao outro. Amaram-se, espalharam estilo e cometeram excessos (muitos). Toda esta intensidade consumiu-se ao fim de cinco anos. Separaram-se em 1978 e, dois anos depois, McQueen morreu, vítima de cancro. De Ali McGraw, Calvin Klein disse um dia que era “a personificação do grande estilo americano”.

It was in 1972, during the shooting of the “The Getaway”, that Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw met. He was 42, already famous all over the world and known as “the king of cool”. She was 34 with an Oscar nomination for her performance in “Love Story”. The film that brought them together, directed by Sam Peckinpah, had exactly the right doses of tension, danger and love to make the characters’ emotions become part of real life. Once the shooting was over, McQueen ended his marriage to get together with Ali, who also left her husband. Free of their previous lives, Steve and Ali dedicated themselves to one another. They loved each other, flaunted style and committed excesses, many of them. All this intensity was over after five years. They separated in 1978 and two years later McQueen died, a victim of cancer. Ali McGraw was once described by Calvin Klein who said “she exemplified the Great American Style”.

A WINK viajou até Londres numa improvisada “escapadinha” pelo coração de uma das cidades mais fascinantes do mundo, com a intenção de evitar os guias turísticos, os monumentos óbvios e o postal cliché, para procurar sítios surpreendentes e pessoas inspiradoras.

Da enorme janela do quarto, as grandes chaminés saltam à vista de imediato. Nine Elms, a imponente construção industrial do final do século xIx, domina a imensa malha urbana, que nos prende o olhar enquanto nos preparamos para um passeio por uma das cidades mais fervilhantes e cosmopolitas do mundo. A antiga central eléctrica, que foi capa do LP “Animals” dos Pink Floyd em 1977, está neste momento a ser reconstruída. Um projecto megalómano que é considerado uma das maiores intervenções de reabilitação urbana da capital britânica. É esta a vista privilegiada que podemos admirar de um dos muitos quartos do Pestana Chelsea Bridge Hotel & SPA, que nos acolhe durante os próximos dias. Situado na margem sul do rio Tamisa, paredes-meias com o famoso bairro de Chelsea, o hotel prima pela elegância das linhas e a harmonia das cores, num ambiente moderno e sofisticado, ideal para relaxar e desfrutar de uma cidade tão intensa e vibrante. É por isso com agrado que nos sentimos, de alguma forma, em casa. O conforto dos quartos e os vários serviços disponibilizados proporcionam uma sensação de familiaridade e é impossível não esboçar um grande sorriso quando nos apercebemos que as várias salas de conferências foram baptizadas com nomes de algumas das mais belas cidades de Portugal, contrastando com os muitos ícones da cultura britânica expostos em grandes quadros ou com as citações de notáveis da cultura do “país de sua majestade.”

WINK travelled to London on a spontaneous “quick break” to the heart of one of the world’s most fascinating cities, intending to avoid the tourist guide books, the obvious monuments and the post card clichés and, to look, instead for surprising places and inspiring people. From the giant hotel room window, the huge chimneys immediately catch one’s eye. Nine Elms, the late 19th century impressive industrial building dominates the immense urban environment, attracts our attention whilst we prepare for a walk in one of the world’s most bustling and cosmopolitan cities. The former power station, that featured on the cover of the 1977 Pink Floyd album “Animals”, is currently being rebuilt. A megalomaniac project that is considered one of the British capital’s greatest ever restoration works. This is the privileged view that we can admire from one of the many rooms of the Pestana Chelsea Bridge Hotel & SPA that welcomes us for a few days. Located on the south bank of the River Thames, adjacent to the famous Chelsea district, the hotel is striking due to its elegance, the harmony of its colours and, as it is set in a modern and sophisticated environment, it is the ideal place for relaxation and enjoyment amidst such an intense and vibrant city. The comfort of the rooms and the various services available provide a sense of homeliness and it’s impossible to hide a smile when we realize that the various conference rooms are named after some of Portugal’s most beautiful cities, that contrast with the many British culture icons exhibited in huge frames or the quotations on walls made by noteworthy people from “Her Majesty’s country”.

Já instalados e recuperados da viagem, decidimos iniciar a nossa incursão por um dos parques mais bonitos e originais da cidade.

Não tivemos de caminhar muito, já que são poucos os metros que nos separaram do Battersea Park. Com 83 hectares, este parque centenário onde se realizou o primeiro jogo de futebol do mundo, inunda-nos com a serenidade dos seus enormes relvados, imponentes árvores e um imenso lago. Nesta margem do Tamisa respira-se ar puro e assiste-se a hábitos saudáveis. As crianças brincam, os adultos fazem jogging, e nós desfrutamos de um óptimo piquenique encomendado no hotel, um dos muitos serviços que o Pestana Chelsea Bridge Hotel & SPA proporciona.

A relação única que os londrinos mantêm com a natureza será razão de sobra para, por ocasião do famoso Chelsea Flower Show (um encontro internacional de amantes da horticultura que se realizará em Maio de 2012), trazer para o coração da Londres uma apresentação da luxuriante flora da ilha da Madeira. Um acontecimento que se chamará Madeira Food and Flower Festival e que terá epicentro no Pestana Chelsea Bridge Hotel & SPA.

Having settled in and recovered from the trip we started our excursion in one of the city’s most beautiful and original parks. We didn’t have far to go, as the hotel is just a few metres from Battersea Park. This 83-hectare park, that is over a hundred years old, is where the world’s first ever football match was played and it overwhelms us with the serenity of its enormous lawns, impressive trees and huge lake. On the banks of the Thames, we breathe in the fresh air and observe healthy sporting activities: children play, adults jog and we enjoy a great picnic ordered at the hotel, one of the many services provided, for outdoor activities, by the Pestana Chelsea Bridge Hotel & SPA. The unique relationship that Londoners have with nature is a good enough reason to bring to London, during the famous Chelsea Flower Show week (an international horticulture event that will take place in May 2012), a lush flora presentation from the Island of Madeira. An event named the Madeira Food and Flower Festival that will take place at the Pestana Chelsea Bridge Hotel & SPA.

A Ponte de Chelsea, uma das muitas que ligam as duas margens do Tamisa, foi erigida por ordem da rainha Vitória, sendo a primeira ponte suspensa do Reino Unido. É a Chelsea Bridge que nos conduz até à margem oposta do rio. Começamos por visitar o jardim botânico mais antigo de Londres. O Chelsea Physic Garden é um lugar secreto ainda ignorado por muitos guias turísticos. Foi criado pela Venerável Sociedade de Farmacêuticos de Londres em 1673 para que os aprendizes pudessem estudar as propriedades medicinais das plantas, tornando-se, no século xVII, num dos centros de botânica mais importantes do mundo. É um verdadeiro museu ao ar livre, que reúne mais de cinco mil espécies de ervas medicinais, todas devidamente identificadas e organizadas para agrado dos visitantes mais curiosos que queiram saber um pouco mais das imensas propriedades medicinais oferecidas pela natureza. Ao deambular por este sítio mágico, apercebemo-nos da incrível variedade de plantas que, de uma forma ou de outra, são utilizadas para fins medicinais e admiramos espécies, algumas raras e exóticas, provenientes de todo o mundo.

Chelsea Bridge, one of the many that connect the two banks of the Thames, was built by order of Queen Victoria and was the first suspension bridge in the United Kingdom. It’s Chelsea Bridge that takes us to the other side of the river. We start by visiting the oldest botanical garden in London. The Chelsea Physic Garden is a secret place still unknown to many tourist guides. It was created by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London in 1673 so that apprentices could study the medicinal properties of plants.

In the 17th century it became one of the world’s most important botanical centres. It really is an outdoor museum, with more than five thousand species of medicinal herbs, all of which are duly identified and organized for the more interested visitors who want to know a little more about the immense medicinal properties that nature has to offer. Whilst wandering around this magical place, we begin to see the incredible variety of plants that, in one way or another, are used for medicinal purposes as we admire species, some rare and exotic, from all over the world.

From the calm of nature to the hustle and bustle of the city, we head north to explore one of the mystical areas of London: King’s Road, given this name as, in the past, it was a road used exclusively by King Charles II. This road is inseparably associated with the eccentric Vivienne Westwood or the “mother” of the mini-skirt, Mary Quant who opened her first shop there and which continues to be one of the main symbols of the King’s Road. Diversity and originality reign on this road which, since the 60s, has been attracting people from all over the world due to its variety of shops and department stores which has made it one of the favourite places for shopping. Penhaligon’s is one of the many shops that stand-out and where, to our surprise, among the countless candles, essences and perfumes, we came across a fragrance that immediately caught our attention: Douro – Eau de Portugal, a cologne created a hundred years ago by Sir Percy Croft, a name that to this day is associated with port wine. We looked at our watches and saw it was time for some food. Caraffini, right next door, looked like the ideal place to have lunch and recharge our batteries. This Italian restaurant is charming and affordable, with a vast menu of dishes that are reinventions or fusions of tastes from different parts of the world. After lunch it was time to continue on our way, the next stop being Covent Garden.

A diversidade e a originalidade imperam nesta rua que, desde os anos ’60, atrai pessoas do mundo inteiro pela variedade de lojas e armazéns, e que tornou a zona num dos sítios de eleição para fazer compras. A Penhaligon’s é uma das muitas lojas que se destacam e onde, com grande surpresa nossa, entre inúmeras velas, essências e perfumes, nos deparamos com uma fragrância cujo nome nos chama de imediato a atenção: Douro – Eau de Portugal, uma colónia criada há 100 anos por Sir Percy Croft, apelido ainda hoje associado ao negócio do vinho do Porto. Olhamos para o relógio e a hora coincide com os caprichos dos nossos estômagos. O Caraffini fica aqui mesmo ao lado e parece-nos ser o sítio ideal para almoçar e retemperar forças. O restaurante italiano é simpático e acessível, com um vasto menu de pratos que são alvo de reinvenções ou fusões com outros sabores do mundo. Depois do almoço, é hora de seguirmos caminho. Para conhecer bem uma cidade é obrigatório descer às profundezas da rede de metro e observar quem o utiliza. O transporte urbano mais rápido e prático espelha bem a alma e a génese de uma cidade tão diversa e contraditória, como todas as grandes metrópoles conseguem ser. Os turistas fintam arduamente os mais apressados que, como sempre, estão atrasados para o compromisso seguinte, não fosse a pontualidade apanágio destas bandas.

Em Covent Garden o ritmo da cidade acelera e invade-nos freneticamente. Os músicos de rua proporcionam ritmos e melodias de vários géneros que nos acompanham enquanto conhecemos um pouco melhor aquele que continua a ser um dos mercados mais conhecidos de Londres. Por aqui já não se compra fruta e legumes. As bancas deram lugar a um número infindável de lojas, restaurantes, bares, galerias de arte e teatros, que nos obrigam a ser criteriosos na gestão do nosso tempo. Decidimos, por isso, confiar no Seven Dials para nos conduzir por uma das zonas mais movimentadas da cidade. O guia encontra-se em qualquer loja e é elaborado por quem aqui vive e trabalha. Logo no editorial, assegura-nos que quem aconselha são consumidores experientes e de bom gosto. Uma das sugestões do nosso novo “amigo” leva-nos até à Cath Kidston, loja very british onde os motivos florais, tão típicos do Reino Unido, são aplicados sem qualquer embaraço

a todo o tipo de objectos. Aventais, canecas, vestidos, almofadas e muitos outros produtos, entre o kitsch e o sóbrio, com uma qualidade muito aceitável, enchem esta loja, ideal para comprar pequenos presentes para a família e amigos. O mesmo paradigma aplica-se à nossa descoberta seguinte. A Mint é uma loja vintage imperdível para quem gosta de vestuário e acessórios de outros tempos mas que odeia preços proibitivos.

O acaso leva-nos a Charing Cross Road que descemos em passo lento para explorar algumas das muitas lojas de música que encontramos, comprar vinis de outros tempos e relembrar capas de LP antigas há muito guardadas no fundo do baú. Quando nos damos conta chegamos à sala de visitas da capital britânica, a imponente Trafalgar Square, onde, entre o bulício de turistas misturados com londrinos, avistamos uma carrinha de gelados que nos faz recuar aos tempos de infância, e que nos convida para um momento de descanso na enorme escadaria da National Gallery. É tempo de saborear um delicioso cone de baunilha. Ao longe, contemplamos as águas prateadas do Tamisa e a torre dourada do Big Ben. Perfeito. Mas a nossa pausa é interrompida pelo telefonema de uma amiga que, tal como combinado, se vai encontrar com a WINK. É hora de apanhar o metro.

To really get to know a city, one must go down to the depths of the underground network and observe its users. The quickest and most practical urban transport reflects the soul and origin of such a diverse and contradictory city, as all great metropolises tend to be. The tourists avoid with difficulty those in more of a hurry who might be late for their next appointment were this not for the punctuality that is typical here. In Covent Garden the city’s rhythm accelerates and possesses us. The street buskers provide various types of rhythms and melodies that accompany us whilst we get to know one of London’s best known markets. One no longer buys fruit and vegetables here. The stalls have given way to countless shops, restaurants, bars, art galleries and theatres forcing us to be very selective about managing our time. We therefore decided to trust Seven Dials to lead us through one of the city’s busiest areas. This guide can be found in most shops and is written by people who live and work here. The introduction assures us that the recommendations have been made by experienced consumers with good taste. One of the suggestions by our new “friend” took us to the very British, Cath Kidston, a shop where floral motifs, so typical in the United Kingdom, are applied without hesitation, to all types of objects. Aprons, mugs, dresses, cushions and many other products, from kitsch to sober, of high quality, fill this shop

which is ideal for buying small presents for family and friends.

The same goes for our next discovery, Mint is a vintage shop not to be missed for those who love clothes and accessories from past times but hate prohibitive prices.

By chance we end up on Charing Cross Road which we stroll down exploring some of the many music shops that we come across, buying old vinyl records and remembering old record covers that we used to find at the bottom of old trunks. Before we know it, we reach the main space of the British capital, the impressive Trafalgar Square where amidst the hustle and bustle of tourists mixed with Londoners, we spot an ice-cream van that takes us back to our childhood and that invites us to have a rest on the enormous outside steps of the National Gallery. It’s time to savour a delicious vanilla ice-cream cone. In the distance we contemplate the silver waters of the Thames and the golden tower of Big Ben. Perfect. Our break, however, is interrupted by a phone call, a friend who has agreed to meet Wink. Time to catch the tube.

6TH STOP THE LAST TUESDAy SOCIETy Numa das escadas da estação de metro de Notting Hill, damos um longo abraço a Hanya, uma amiga londrina que se junta ao nosso passeio. Em Portobello Road sentimo-nos noutra cidade, mais aprumada e vaidosa. As crianças saem da escola com as suas fardas tão alinhadas como se as tivessem acabado de vestir. Os mais crescidos começam a trocar a cadeira do escritório ou do atelier pela dos muitos cafés e esplanadas do bairro imortalizado pelo filme de Julia Roberts e Hugh Grant. Primeira paragem: Electric, um bar muito frequentado por músicos, actores, artistas. Um must a não perder nesta zona, para “ver e ser visto” e beber um cocktail, aproveitando os preços da clássica happy hour. Seguimos viagem e entramos num sítio bem diferente, o Leinster Arms, um típico pub inglês onde bebemos uma pint enquanto registamos as várias dicas de Hanya, que nos fala do Spitalfields Market (um mercado moderno onde se encontra desde a jóia mais excêntrica, à mobília Art Deco, até a edições raras de vinis) e o Borough Market (um mercado à antiga, com frutas e vegetais, mas também peixe, carne ou flores). Hanya fala-nos ainda da conhecida discoteca The Box, situada em Leicester Square, conhecida pelo seu ambiente extravagante e boémio. A tarde já vai longa. Despedimo-nos da Hanya. Temos encontro marcado com outro amigo muito especial.

On the steps at Notting Hill tube station, passers-by have to move out of the way to avoid running us over during the long, warm hug that we give Hanya, a friend from London who joins us on our walk. On Portobello Road we feel like we’re in a different city, more cared-for and proud. Children leave school with their uniforms impeccably ironed, as if they had just been put on. Older people trade their chair at work or their atelier for one in the many cafés and elegant outdoor esplanades of the area, immortalized by the film featuring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant. First stop: Electric, a cosmopolitan bar favoured by musicians, actors and artists. A must, not to be missed in this area of London, a place to “see and be seen” and to have a cocktail, making the most of the friendly happy hour prices. We continued and went somewhere completely different, the Leinster Arms, a typical British pub where we had a pint whilst we listened to Hanya enthusiastically recommend Spitalfields Market (a modern market with many shops where one can find anything from the most eccentric jewellery to Art deco furniture and rare vinyl records) and Borough Market (an old market with lots of fruit and vegetables but where you’ll also find other fresh products such as fish, meat or flowers). Hanya also tells us about the famous nightclub, The Box, located in Leicester Square, renowned for its extravagant and bohemian atmosphere. It’s been a long afternoon. We bid our friend farewell as we still want to go to a very unusual shop to meet up with a very special friend.

6 ª PaRagEM Apanhamos o metro até London Fields e procuramos o número 11 da Mare Street. A porta negra e a montra insólita aguçam a curiosidade. Estamos na loja da The Last Tuesday Society, uma organização que se dedica “a explorar e a promover os aspectos literários e artísticos da vida”. Este mundo paralelo, composto por objectos invulgares, rochas e minerais, animais empalhados, bonecas antigas, ossos e peças etnográficas, surpreende-nos ao primeiro embate. Viktor Wynd, dono e mentor deste projecto, leva-nos de visita à sua vasta colecção. O nosso five o’clock tea (gin servido em xícaras de chá) é oportunidade para Viktor nos explicar que a The Last Tuesday Society é muito mais do que uma loja de artefactos. Aqui organizam-se festas, promovem-se as artes e aposta-se nos talentos artísticos emergentes. Hoje é dia de exibição de um filme realizado por Zoe Beloff, artista escocesa que mistura o look das projecções do século passado com a tecnologia 3D. Antes de sairmos, Viktor recomenda-nos ainda alguns dos seus restaurantes preferidos: o Andrew Edmonds, o Bistrothéque e o Viajante. We took the tube to London Fields and looked for number 11, on Mare Street. The black door and strange shop window heighten our curiosity. We’re in the shop of The Last Tuesday Society, an organization that is “devoted to exploring and furthering the esoteric, literary and artistic aspects of life in London and beyond”. This parallel world, composed of unusual objects, rocks and minerals, stuffed animals, old dolls, bones and ethnographic pieces, surprise us upon first impact. Viktor Wynd, this venture’s owner and mentor, shows us his vast collection. Our 5 o’clock tea (gin served in teacups) is an opportunity for Viktor to explain that The Last Tuesday Society is more than just an artefact shop. Parties are organised here where art and emerging artistic talent are promoted. Today they will be exhibiting a film directed by Zoe Beloff, a Scottish artist who mixes the films from the last century with 3D technology. Before we leave Viktor recommends some of his favourite restaurants: the Andrew Edmonds, the Bistrothéque and the Viajante. Other mysteries can be revealed at thelasttuesdaysociety.org.

BACK TO THE HOTEL DE VOLTA AO HOTEL

O passeio foi tão empolgante que só quando regressamos ao hotel nos apercebemos como estamos cansados e esfomeados. Decidimos então dar um mergulho revigorante na piscina interior e, depois de uma sessão de sauna, entregamo-nos nas mãos dos melhores profissionais para um tratamento de pele e uma massagem.

Revigorados, rumamos ao restaurante do hotel, que nos permite matar saudades de alguns sabores típicos de Portugal. A refeição termina com um digestivo no terraço panorâmico do último andar, com Londres a nossos pés. Daqui, olhamos para o horizonte e ficamos contentes por saber que queremos voltar muito em breve.

Até porque, em 2012, a capital britânica será o grande estádio dos Jogos Olímpicos.

Our walk was so exciting that it wasn’t until we got back to the Hotel that we realised how tired and starving we were. We decided to go for an invigorating swim in the indoor pool and then, after a sauna, we treated ourselves to a skin treatment and massage. Reinvigorated, we headed to the Hotel restaurant and enjoyed some of the typical dishes from Portugal which we had been missing. The meal ended with an after dinner drink on the top floor’s panoramic terrace, with London at our feet. From here we looked out over the horizon and happily realized that we wanted to come back here very soon. One good reason is that the British capital will host the 2012 Olympic Games.

INTERVIEW ENTREVISTA fRANcOIS PIENAAR

Nelson Mandela disse um dia que foi “através da inspiradora liderança” de Francois Piennar “que o rugby se tornou o motivo de orgulho de toda uma nação”. Mandela diria ainda que a liderança de Pienaar “se estendeu muito para além dos campos, representando todos os sul-africanos e reunindo-os sob um único país”.

A WINK falou com este génio do desporto — um ícone do rugby mundial — mas também um empreendedor, advogado, doutorado em Ciência pela Universidade de Hertfordshire, e fundador da MAD. Pienaar serviu também de inspiração ao realizador Clint Eastwood que adaptou a sua biografia no filme “Invictus”.

Temos muito sorte em termos conseguido cinco minutos do tempo de Francois Pienaar.

The South African, Francois Pienaar, is a global rugby icon, sport genius, entrepreneur, lawyer, holder of an honorary doctorate in science from the University of Hertfordshire, founder of the MAD charity and the inspiration for a Clint Eastwood film based on some of his life’s events.

Nelson Mandela once said about Mr. Francois Piennar, “It was under his inspiring leadership that rugby became the pride of the entire country, his leadership extended beyond the field of rugby and he truly represents all South Africans. Under his inspiring leadership a nation was brought together”.

We were extremely lucky that Mr. Francois Pienaar took 5 minutes out of his busy agenda to answer some questions for WINK.

WINK: Qual é a memória mais antiga que guarda de uma viagem?

FRANCOIS: Quando fiz cinco anos, os meus amigos levaram-me a Durban para ver o mar pela primeira vez. Como não estava propriamente acostumado às ondas, voltei a correr para cima e sequei-me. Demorei ainda um bocado a voltar a ganhar confiança para o próximo assalto às ondas.

WINK: Como jogador de rugby viajou à volta do mundo durante muitos anos. Antes disso, imaginava uma vida assim?

FRANCOIS: A primeira vez que saí da África do Sul já era capitão da selecção nacional de rugby. Fomos numa viagem pela Austrália e até aí eu não imaginava como o desporto teria um papel também tão importante na descoberta de outros países, diferentes culturas e locais interessantes.

WINK: Viajar, encontrar outras pessoas e culturas, moldou de alguma forma a sua personalidade?

FRANCOIS: Sem dúvida. Viajar pelo mundo, por lugares tão diferentes, foi uma forma de educação.

WINK: Muitos dos nossos leitores vão-se imediatamente lembrar

WINK: What is your earliest memory of travelling?

FRANCOIS: When I turned 5, my folks took me to Durban so that I could see the sea for the first time. Not used to the waves, I rushed ahead into the break only to be tumble dried back onto the beach. It took a while to rebuild my confidence for another assault…

WINK: Rugby made you travel around the world for many years, from one country to another, did you ever imagine your life would be like this?

FRANCOIS: The first time I travelled abroad was as the captain of the South African National team on a tour to Australia, I never imagined that sport would play such a big role in giving me the opportunity to experience different countries, cultures and interesting places.

WINK: Did travelling (meeting other people and cultures) help shape you as a person in any way?

FRANCOIS: Without a doubt, exposure to so many varied places across the globe has been an education.

FRANCOIS: Tinha a sensação de que era um momento especial, mas nunca sonhei sequer com a hipótese de um jogo vir de alguma forma a ajudar a construir o futuro do nosso país. O meu pensamento imediato foi que o nosso sonho de sermos campeões do mundo se tinha tornado realidade…

WINK: Na sua vida pessoal, que peso tem o facto de se ter encontrado, de facto, ter conhecido, Nelson Mandela, um homem tão admirado em todo o mundo mas que apenas alguns têm o privilégio de conhecer?

FRANCOIS: Quer o meu primeiro encontro com Mandela, quer todos os restantes encontros, foram especiais para mim. A sua empatia, o seu projecto para a África do Sul, o seu altruísmo, marcaram-me de forma indelével.

WINK: O filme “Invictus” conta-nos a história de uma África do Sul dividida que se reencontra como nação através da vitória no Campeonato do Mundo de 1995. Como é que se sentiu quando se viu representado por Matt Damon neste filme realizado por Clint Eastwood?

FRANCOIS: Foi bizarro ver um grande actor como Matt Damon a fazer de mim. Foi muito especial conhecer o Clint Eastwood, o Morgan Freeman, o Matt… às vezes ainda me belisco para ter a certeza de que estou acordado.

WINK: Para além de ser uma figura do rugby que alcançou uma reputação única, para além de ser um advogado reconhecido e um empreendedor de sucesso, o Francois é também fundador da MAD (Make A Difference), uma organização filantrópica pouco comum. Porque fundou a MAD e qual é o seu objectivo?

FRANCOIS: A vida foi generosa comigo. É um privilégio poder dar aos outros a oportunidade que precisam para alcançar o seu verdadeiro potencial. A fundação Make A Difference apoia financeiramente os jovens talentosos que estão em desvantagem económica para que possam ser o melhor que consigam. Um dos nossos primeiros bolseiros é agora estudante na Universidade de Harvard.

WINK: Conte-nos agora um episódio divertido que se tenha passado numa das suas viagens.

FRANCOIS: O que acontece na viagem, fica na viagem…

WINK: Em todo o mundo, hotéis e suites receberam o nome de personalidades famosas. Há a suite Agatha Christie (em Istambul), o Hard Day’s Night Hotel (o título de uma canção dos Beatles), o Bar Hemingway (num hotel de Paris), e por aí fora. Gostava de ter Francois Piennar como nome de uma suite de hotel?

FRANCOIS: Podemos em vez disso chamar-lhe Springboks [como também é conhecida a selecção de rugby sul-africana]?

WINK: Quais são para si as características do hotel perfeito?

FRANCOIS: Há muitos hotéis maravilhosos no mundo. Para mim, o diferenciador tem sempre sido um bom serviço e um grande sorriso.

WINK: Qual foi a viagem da sua vida?

FRANCOIS: Alguma coisa me diz que a viagem da minha vida ainda está para vir…

WINK: Qual é a viagem que quer fazer e que ainda não fez?

FRANCOIS: A viagem da minha vida…

WINK: Many of our readers will immediately be reminded of your June 1995 World Cup victory, Nelson Mandela and yourself sharing the podium proudly holding the cup – an image that will forever reflect the new moment South Africans were living. At that time, were you aware of the historical importance of that moment? What were you thinking about then?

FRANCOIS: I had a sense that this was a special moment, never in my wildest dreams did I think the game would in a way help to shape the future of our country. My immediate thoughts were that our dream has come true, we are world champions.

WINK: In your personal life, how important was meeting and really getting to know Nelson Mandela, a man the world admires so much but only a few have the privilege of meeting?

FRANCOIS: My first meeting with Madiba and the many afterwards were all very special to me. His caring nature, vision for South Africa and selflessness have left an indelible mark on me.

WINK: “Invictus”, the movie launched some years ago, tells a compelling story of how a once divided South African nation was united through the 1995 World Cup victory – how did it feel to see yourself played on the big screen by Matt Damon in a film directed by Clint Eastwood?

FRANCOIS: It was bizarre watching such a fine actor as Matt play me, meeting and spending time with Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman and Matt was very special, I still pinch myself.

WINK: Besides your iconic rugby achievements and reputation, you are a qualified lawyer and successful business entrepreneur.

But you also founded the MAD (Make a Difference) charity – which has a philosophy that is a little out of the ordinary. Why did you do it and what is the main purpose of MAD? FRANCOIS: Life has been very kind to me; it is a privilege to give people an opportunity so that they can fulfil their true potential.

The Make A Difference foundation supports academically talented youngsters that are economically disadvantaged so that they can become the best they can be. One of our first MAD scholars is currently studying at Harvard University.

WINK: Tell us about an amusing episode that took place during one of your trips.

FRANCOIS: What goes on tour stays on tour.

WINK: There are many hotels and suites around the world named after famous personalities. There’s the Agatha Christie Suite (in Istanbul), the Hard Day’s Night Hotel (named after The Beatles song), the Bar Hemingway (at a hotel in Paris), and so on. Where would you like to have a Francois Pienaar suite and why?

FRANCOIS: Can we name it after the SA rugby team (Springboks) instead? I would like to have the Springbok suite.

WINK: What characteristics should the perfect hotel have?

FRANCOIS: There are many wonderful hotels in the world, the differentiator has always been, great service with a big smile.

WINK: What was the most important trip in your life?

FRANCOIS: I have a sense it is still to come.

WINK: What trip would you like to go on that you haven’t done so yet?

FRANCOIS: The most important trip of my life.

Ao jantar, deixou cair as falsas identidades com que domina missões tão longínquas como a produção de Antony and the Johnsons e Bjork, a inacabada 10.ª de Malher para a Deutsche Grammophon, ou os DJ set em Ibiza. Sem nunca deixar de se surpreender pelo mundo, explicou-nos que o que une um trabalho assim tão disperso é o seu inabalável código estético e político. Valores que se prolongam pelos pormenores de uma vida comum, também ela construída no caminho de cada viagem. Para ouvir com atenção.

A master in the art of confusing everything and in the end coming out alive, the London musician Matthew Herbert talked to WINK. Over dinner, he lets on about the false identities he uses to dominate missions as far apart as producing Anthony and the Johnsons and Bjork, the unfinished 10th by Malher for Deutsche Grammophon, or the DJ sets in Ibiza. WINK: Quando fica num quarto de hotel, costuma ter algum ritual?

HERBERT: Por acaso até tenho. Levo sempre o meu sabonete!

Detesto aqueles sabonetezinhos embrulhados em plástico. Detesto desperdício! Trago comigo tudo o que posso para não ter de usar nenhuma destas coisas descartáveis. De resto: uso a cama, uso uma toalha. E pronto, evitar o desperdício.

WINK: O que é que faz quando se quer sentir em casa e o que é que faz num hotel que nunca faria em casa?

HERBERT: A melhor coisa que um hotel me dá é a hipótese de ler. Em casa tenho os meus dois filhos, um com 1 ano, outro com 4, e, além de me levarem todo o tempo que tenho, levam também o silêncio. Gosto de ler em silêncio. Para me sentir em casa, ligo a net, vejo a minha família pelo Skype, leio os mails. Nada de muito romântico nem old-fashioned, mas muito prático!

WINK: Como é que as viagens influem no seu trabalho e no seu processo criativo?

HERBERT: Às vezes, a obrigação de viajar é um problema porque vem interromper qualquer coisa. Evito viajar de avião, prefiro sempre o comboio ou o carro. Como enjoo facilmente não posso ler em andamento, o que me dá para ir olhando pela janela. Além de inspiração, a paisagem dá-te uma oportunidade de pensar no que é que andas a fazer. Mas para mim, o melhor de qualquer viagem é a comida, experimentar outra comida. Sabes, grande parte do meu trabalho é sobre as sonoridades do mundo, o que me torna curioso em ouvir ambientes sempre diferentes.

WINK: Gostava de ter um hotel?

HERBERT: Por acaso acho que sim. Devo ter estado nuns dois mil hotéis.

WINK: Que toque pessoal lhe daria?

HERBERT: Estou a trabalhar nisso e quero que seja surpresa, por isso não te posso dizer. Mas vais ver… Uma coisa que te posso garantir é que teria um serviço de refeições com 24h de boa comida. É isto que faz um bom hotel. Às vezes, quando trabalho como DJ, acabo de pôr música às 10 da manhã e o check-out nos hotéis é às 11. Não só tenho de pedir um check-out tardio lá para as 16h, como perco o pequeno-almoço. Fico-me por uma banana e um copo de água… Pronto: para mim, é mesmo room service 24 horas por dia e calma, muita calma também é importante.

WINK: Tem uma cidade ou um destino a que queira sempre voltar?

HERBERT: Estou sempre a mudar. Mas há qualquer coisa muito boa com Vancouver, talvez por causa das montanhas e do mar…

A arquitectura da cidade é bastante maçadora mas a envolvente geográfica é incrível. Se gostas de comer bem, Nova Iorque é o melhor. Para quem gosta de ambientes, Paris é uma cidade incrível. Neste momento, vivo dentro do estúdio em gravações, ou em hotéis e estações de comboio. É por isso que quero ir para o exterior, para florestas, montanhas, caminhar pelos campos e ir para longe da poluição sonora e do lixo.

HERBERT: (Mathew Herbert helps us prepare the recorder for the interview) One, two. One, two. O.K! WINK: Do you have any rituals when you stay at a hotel?

HERBERT: Yes I do in fact. I always take my own soap, I hate those little miniature things wrapped in plastic. I hate waste! I take as many things as I can myself so I don’t have to use any of those disposable ones. Apart from that I use the bed, a towel and that’s it. Avoiding waste.

WINK: What do you do to make you feel at home and what do you do that you would never do at home?

HERBERT: The best thing about being in a hotel is that I get the chance to read. I have my two young sons at home, a 1 and a 4 year-old, who, in addition to taking up all my time, they take away the silence. I enjoy reading in silence. To make me feel at home, I go on the internet, watch my family on Skype, read my e-mails. Not very romantic nor old-fashioned but very practical!

WINK: How does travelling influence your work and creative process?

HERBERT: Sometimes having to travel is a problem because it interrupts something. I avoid travelling by plane, I always prefer going by train or car. I can’t read when I’m moving as I suffer from motion sickness, so I spend a lot of time looking out of the window. In addition to inspiration, the countryside gives you the opportunity to think about what you are doing. However, the best thing about travelling for me is the food, trying new things. You know, a lot of my work is about sounds of the world which makes me curious about listening to new environments.

WINK: Would you like to own a hotel?

HERBERT: Actually, I think would. I must have stayed at about 2000 different hotels.

WINK: What personal touch would you add to it?

HERBERT: I’m working on that and want it to be a surprise, so I can’t tell you. But you’ll see… One thing I can guarantee is that there would be good food served 24 hours a day. That’s what makes a good hotel. Sometimes, when I’m working as a DJ, I stop playing at 10 in the morning and checkout time is at 11. So, not only do I have to ask for a late checkout, at about 4, I also miss breakfast. I end up with a banana and a glass of water. That’s it: for me, 24h room service and tranquillity, a lot of tranquillity are very important for me.

WINK: Is there a city or destination you always want to return to?

HERBERT: It always changes but there is something very nice about Vancouver, maybe it’s because of the mountains and the sea. The city’s architecture is a bit boring but the geographical setting is just incredible. If you like food, New York is the best. If you like good atmospheres, Paris is an incredible city. At the moment, my whole life is spent in recording studios or in hotels and train stations. That’s why I want to go somewhere outdoors like forests, mountains, walking in the fields away from noise pollution and rubbish.

POUSADA DE VISEU “INDO EU, INDO EU A CAMINHO DE VISEU” Viseu tem história por todas as suas ruas. Palácios, igrejas, museus e memórias de outros tempos fazem de Viseu é uma delícia para qualquer visitante. E agora também tem uma das maiores Pousadas de Portugal. Instalada num imponente edifício, que começou a ser construído em 1793, a Pousada de Viseu mantém a traça original mas veio dar uma nova vida aos quartos, ao claustro, ao espaço envolvente, a tudo. O resultado desta bem conseguida obra de reabilitação, da responsabilidade do arquitecto Gonçalo Byrne, é uma estrutura hoteleira com todas as comodidades a que o público mais exigente está habituado: confortáveis quartos, luxuosas suites, um spa de primeira qualidade, piscina interior e exterior, um bem equipado ginásio, um restaurante irresistível, vistas desafogadas, um charme incomparável.

A transformação do espaço foi tal que, aquando da sua inauguração no início de 2009 a população de Viseu fez autênticas romarias à Pousada, fascinada com a nova e surpreendente vida deste antigo monumento.

Mas tínhamos o nosso trabalho para fazer: preparar toda uma produção de moda, com modelos e fotógrafos e maquilhadores e cabeleireiros – um conjunto de talentos empenhado em criar o ambiente de um casamento muito especial para este número da WINK. A equipa começou a chegar aos poucos, e na cara de todos a mesma expressão de agrado, na boca de todos os mesmos elogios rasgados: “o claustro é maravilhoso”; “já viram a piscina? é linda!”; “o meu quarto tem uma vista incrível”; “este edifício é brutal!”.

Instalada (e conquistada!) a equipa, deitámos mãos à obra; havia muito a fazer e não muito tempo para o fazer. Uma das salas de reunião do Centro de Convenções da Pousada encheu-se de chariots, roupas e adereços. Foram montados espelhos para os cabeleireiros e maquilhadores, feitas provas de roupa, o frenesi era enorme. E como todo o trabalho merece ser recompensado, cada refeição no claustro era um autêntico, e saboroso, recarregar de energias, preparado com talento pelos cozinheiros do Viriato, o restaurante da Pousada. Trabalhar assim dá gosto.

Finalmente, chegou o momento de fotografar o editorial de moda.

Os noivos chegaram num imponente Jaguar, que foi conduzido até ao claustro, e a festa começou logo ali. Mas este era mesmo só o começo porque, pouco depois, veio a celebração no jardim, o louco jantar, as danças exóticas, os banhos de espuma e tudo o que pode ver nas páginas que se seguem.

Felizmente as camas eram absolutamente confortáveis e deramnos a todos o sono que precisávamos depois de tanta animação.

Ainda tivemos tempo de dar um passeio por Viseu, de nos deliciarmos nas fantásticas pastelarias (muitas e todas irresistíveis), de visitar o Museu Grão Vasco, a Sé, passear pelas ruas e prometer a nós próprios que voltaríamos, sem obrigações de trabalho e só mesmo e apenas para desfrutar de tudo o que a Pousada tem para oferecer.

Obrigado Viseu, e até breve.

Viseu breathes history in every street and corner. Palaces, churches, museums and memories from bygone times make Viseu a delight for any visitor. Now it is also home to one of the largest Pousadas de Portugal. Set in a majestic building that began being constructed in 1793, the Pousada de Viseu maintains its original façade but the rooms, the cloister and surrounding environments have gained a new life. The result of this exemplary recovery project, signed by Portuguese architect Goncalo Byrne, is a fine hotel that offers all the services every demanding client takes for granted nowadays: comfortable rooms, luxurious suites, first class spa, interior and exterior pool, well equipped gym, an irresistible restaurant, spectacular views and unique charm.

Its makeover was such that, when it was officially inaugurated as a Pousada in early 2009, the city’s population flocked in to visit it, fascinated by the new and surprising life the old monument had gained. As far as we were concerned, we couldn’t have asked for more and some of us even got to sleep in the special suites that are nothing less than spacious duplexes where one simply feels one could live in forever.

But there was work ahead of us: prepare a whole fashion production including models, photographers, makeup artists and hairdressers – a group of talented people determined to create the perfect setting for a very special wedding for this WINK edition.

As the team gradually arrived, the contented looks on everyone’s faces and compliments were repeatedly seen and heard one after the other: “the cloister is wonderful”, “have you seen the pool yet? It’s gorgeous!”, “my room’s view is breathtaking.”, “this building is just awesome!”.

Once installed (and completely won over!) the team set to work; there was lots to do and not a lot of time to get it done. One of the Pousada’s Convention Center rooms filled rapidly with chariots, clothes and accessories. Mirrors for the hairdressers and makeup artists were set into place, clothes were tried on, the excitement building up. And since all work deserves to be well rewarded, we were served delicious meals in the cloister, masterfully prepared by the chefs of the Pousada’s restaurant, the Viriato. Working like this is a pleasure!

Finally it was time to shoot the fashion editorial. The bride and groom arrived in a grand Jaguar driven into the heart of the cloister and that’s when the party started. But that was just the beginning, because shortly after the party spread to the gardens, to the wild dinner, the exotic dancing, the foam baths and everything you can see in the following pages.

Fortunately our beds were utterly comfortable and ensured everyone the necessary repairing sleep after all the partying.

There was still time for a walk around Viseu, to try the fantastic cake shops (many and all irresistible), to visit the Museu Grão Vasco, the cathedral, wonder through the streets and promise ourselves that we would return soon, without a work agenda and simply enjoy everything the Pousada has to offer. Our story begins with love at first sight. 53 minutes later we were married. A year later, we wanted to have a wedding celebration, this time with all our friends, but where? When we discovered the Pousada de Viseu, an impressive 19th century building with all the ingredients necessary for a great party (a huge table, a lawn and a bubble bath), we didn’t hesitate. We sent out the invitations in the morning and that very day, before the sun set, Viseu started to be invaded by our guests. They arrived, settled in, freshened up and got all dressed up. The dress code was prom-trash, something along the lines of “a debutante ball without conventions”.

Each person interpreted it as they wished and this is the result.

O Hotel Pestana Berlin Tiergarten é um espelho da própria capital alemã. Original, surpreendente e moderno, remete-nos de imediato para o ambiente descontraído e a energia contagiante da cidade. Situado no encalço da “movida” berlinense e vizinho do Tiergarten (o maior parque da cidade), a unidade hoteleira de linhas arquitectónicas urbanas e industriais tem o mar como tema central.

The Hotel Pestana Berlin Tiergarten is a reflection of the German capital itself. Original, surprising and modern, it immediately makes us feel the city’s relaxed atmosphere and contagious energy. Located in the midst of the Berlin action and neighbour of the city’s largest park, the hotel with its urban and industrial architectural lines, has the sea as its central theme.

At the reception, a virtual, live carpet of fish and sea creatures accompany our movements. In the lifts we hear the sounds of the oceans as we go up to our comfortable rooms that make us feel cosy with technological pampering. Here white rules with a discrete sea-blue presence that completes the clean and calming minimalist decoration. A feeling that is extended to other areas of the hotel. The lounge is perfect for a drink and to admire the fire-places, which are also virtual, that warm the environment.

The terrace is ideal for breakfast, especially when accompanied by the home-made honey produced in the bee hives located on the roof of the hotel.

À porta do hotel podemos apanhar o autocarro que nos leva directamente a alguns dos sítios mais emblemáticos de Berlim, como a Alexander Platz, símbolo da era comunista, ou ao Mitte, a zona central e morada de alguns dos mais belos monumentos da cidade, como a Porta de Bradenburgo ou a catedral. The hotel’s location is perfect for shoppers, the city’s best department stores can be found just a seven minute walk from the hotel.

At KaDaWe for example, one can find all the main fashion and make-up brands, gourmet products, magazines, books, etc. Access to all the main sight-seeing sites is also easy and practical from here. At the door of the hotel there’s a bus that goes directly to some of Berlin’s most symbolic places, such as Alexander Platz, a symbol of the communist era, or the Mitte, the city centre and home to some of the city’s most beautiful monuments such as the Brandenburg Gate and the Cathedral. The transport system is intuitive, allowing one to explore the candour and simplicity of districts such as Friedrichshain in former East Berlin, totally different to the western area of the city which is characterised by consumer culture. The differences between the two sides of the city, that were separated for fifty years by the world’s most famous wall, are still visible, but today everything flows admirably and with an incredibly contemporary, young, practical and creative spirit.

Não é tarefa fácil escolher para onde ir ou o que fazer perante a imensa oferta cultural da cidade, ainda mais quando o dinheiro não é impedimento para fazer programas interessantes e divertidos. São muitos os restaurantes, bares e cafés especiais e únicos, cuidadosamente decorados, que nos chamam à atenção e que nos convidam a entrar. Todos, sem excepção, têm sempre a preocupação de ter personalidade e alma própria. Do restaurante futurista com a ementa mais elaborada, ao restaurante chinês kitsch, engalanado de dourado, onde os hambúrgueres de polvo são a iguaria de eleição, servidos por exuberantes drag queens ao som de mais uma banda que dá os primeiros passos no mundo da música, tudo é possível nesta cidade. Enquanto saboreamos a mistura de experiências olhamos para o lado e vemos uma sala de tatuagens. Um cenário trash que contrasta com a decoração oriental do restaurante. Em Berlim, as mesas reflectem as nacionalidades que ali vivem. Há restaurantes com ementas dos quatro cantos do mundo, entre os quais destacamos o Toca Rouge, restaurante de cozinha asiática, e o Pastis, que nos oferece uma ementa tipicamente francesa.

Choosing where to go and what to do is not an easy task with so much cultural offering in the city, especially as money is not necessary to do interesting and fun things. There are many special, unique, carefully decorated and inviting restaurants, bars and cafés that attract our attention. Every single one of them, without exceptions, has their own personality and soul. From the futurist restaurant with a more elaborate menu to the kitsch Chinese restaurant, decorated in gold, where octopus burgers are the speciality, served by exuberant drag queens to the sound of a band taking its first steps in the music world, everything is possible in this city. Whilst we savour the mixture of experiences we look around and see a tattoo room. A trash scene that contrasts with the restaurant’s oriental decoration. In Berlin, restaurants reflect the nationalities that live there, with menus ranging from the four corners of the earth, of which we recommend the Toca Rouge, an Asian restaurant and Pastis, with a typical French menu.

Berlin is also one of the main meeting points for a new generation of artists and creatives who aim to establish themselves in the European artists’ scene. The city is cheap and always welcomes, with open arms, entrepreneurism and originality, something clearly visible in the hundreds of art galleries and ateliers that we stumble across at each city corner. The best guide is the intuition and sensitivity of those who appreciate various forms of artistic expression. Ours takes us to a shop called BLESS, located on the second floor of a building, which is also a studio, where absolutely everything is for sale, even the eiderdown! It’s these types of daring and innovative concepts that leave us marvelled at every alleyway.

Na pastelaria Richer, uma das melhores de Berlim, deliciámo-nos com os seus famosos bolos e conhecemos alguém que, graças ao seu look, nos prendeu o olhar desde o primeiro momento. A Britt conta-nos que além de estudar efeitos especiais, foi bailarina e organizadora de eventos. Aproveitámos para lhe fazer umas perguntas sobre styling.

At the Richer patisserie (one of the best in Berlin) we revelled in the famous cakes and got to know someone who immediately caught our eye because of the way she looked. Britt told us that in addition to studying special effects, she was once a ballerina and an events’ organizer. We took the opportunity to ask her some questions about style.

WINK: O que acha que é necessário para ter um bom estilo?

BRITT: As roupas devem servir a nossa personalidade.

WINK: O que é para si elegância?

BRITT: É a mistura entre cores, materiais e formas que devem fluir da melhor maneira. Simples ou mais expressivo de acordo com a personalidade de cada um. Gosto de bons materiais, não gosto de plástico. Destrói o ambiente!

WINK: What makes good style?

BRITT: Clothes should serve our personality.

WINK: What is elegance for you?

BRITT: It’s the mixture of colours, materials and forms that flow the best way possible. Simple or more expressive, depending on ones personality. I like good material, I don’t like plastic, and it destroys the environment!

Já longe do centro da cidade, o Teufelsberg — literalmente “Monte do Diabo” — é o ponto mais alto de Berlim e merece uma visita. O misterioso edifício abandonado que encima o morro (uma antiga base militar britânica da II Guerra Mundial que, aparentemente, o cineasta David Lynch quer adquirir), funde-se com os destroços que cobrem uma escola militar Nazi que os Aliados tentaram, em vão, destruir. A teimosa infra-estrutura nunca cedeu e acabou por ser coberta pelos escombros onde hoje brincam crianças e se passeiam famílias.

Esta é outra característica de Berlim. Por todo o lado existem provas de que ali se fez história, locais onde ontem tiveram lugar acontecimentos determinantes para a Europa de hoje. É impossível não sentir uma sensação de “passado-presente” que nos faz viajar no tempo.

Far from the city centre is the Teufelsberg — literally the Devil’s Mount – the highest point of Berlin that is well worth a visit. The mysterious abandoned building on top of the mount (a former World War II British military base that apparently David Lynch wants to buy), blends in with the remains that cover a Nazi military school that the allies tried, in vain, to destroy. The stubborn infrastructure never caved in and ended up being covered by the ruins where today children play and families take walks.

This is another of Berlin’s characteristics. There are proofs everywhere that history was made here, places where things took place that were determining factors in the making of today’s Europe. It’s impossible not to feel the “past-present”, making us travel back in time.

INTERVIEW ENTREVIsTa JOHN ROMÃO

Quem é John Romão? “Eu sou actor e encenador. Performer se quiserem… Sou o que me chamarem, está tudo bem, quer dizer…

Não está tudo bem porque às vezes chamam-me filho da mãe”, diz John, olhando para o rio que delimita Lisboa. Ele cresceu na outra margem, em Almada, a cidade onde começou a fazer teatro e onde se sentia protegido do olhar crítico lisboeta. “Eu tinha muito medo de enfrentar a capital, hoje já não tenho pudor”, ri-se. No dia a dia John tem na aparência um “ar de rapaz bem comportado”, o seu teatro opõe-se a esta expressão.

Terá sido “Velocidade Máxima” o seu propulsor. Produzia-se em palco ao lado de três “trabalhadores do sexo” tentando desvendar a relação entre sexualidade/economia e o papel do artista no mercado da arte. John actuava e encenava, não era a primeira vez que fazia (quase) tudo. Os textos, escreve-os com o seu cúmplice Mickael de Oliveira, com quem dirige o Colectivo 84 (ano do nascimento de ambos). A colaboração entre os dois culminou em 2011 com a apresentação de “Horror”, no Teatro Nacional D. Maria II. Há ainda outro nome na vida de John: o do encenador argentino Rodrigo Garcia. Quando em 2003 viu a peça “The Story of Ronald, the McDonald’s Clown”, quis de imediato trabalhar com ele. Passados dois anos, fez o impossível: “Para fazer uma formação com o Rodrigo tinhas de ter entre 25 e 31 anos. Eu tinha 22.

Falsifiquei o meu BI, enganei o Ministério da Cultura, fiz tudo para estar com quem realmente eu queria. Fazes tudo por amor.”

Desde 2006 que trabalha também como assistente de encenação de Garcia, acompanhado os seus espectáculos em constante digressão pelo mundo. “Viajar é fazer re-edit na cabeça. É descansar, é ver outras pessoas, é esquecer as coisas.”

Em Julho de 2011, escolheu Berlim: “Olhei para o programa dos teatros. Berlim é a melhor cidade para ver espectáculos de teatro e dança, tens a Schaubühne, a Volksbühne ou o Dock 11.”

Recorda-se então do encontro com a equipa da WINK. John diz-se tímido, não adora ser fotografado. Mas quando fala de fotografia lembra-se da adolescência, época da qual quase não guardou imagens. As fotografias gravam momentos – agora mais do que nunca quer que o registem. Quando o fotografamos no Pestana Berlin Tiergarten Hotel queremos que se lembre para sempre deste Verão em que os seus espectáculos se preparavam para deixar Portugal e ganhar o mundo. Foi para esquecer a timidez que John começou a fazer teatro.

Who is John Romão? “I’m an actor and a director. A performer, if you prefer… I’m whatever people call me, it’s fine, I mean… No, it’s not always fine because sometimes people call me a bastard”, says John, looking at the river that marks the limits of Lisbon. He was brought up on the other side of the river, in Almada, the city where he started doing theatre and where he felt safe from the critical eye of the people of Lisbon. “I was very afraid of confronting the capital, now I have no shame”, he laughs. On a normal day John looks like a “well-behaved young man”, in his theatre work he is the opposite of this.

Could it have been “Velocidade Máxima” that was the driver for this?

He shared the stage with three “sex workers” trying to unveil the relationship between sexuality/economy and the role of the artist in the art market. John acted and directed, it wasn’t the first time he was doing (almost) everything. The scripts, written by his accomplice, Mickael de Oliveira, with whom he directs the Colectivo 84 (the year they were both born). Their work together culminated this year with the presentation of “Horror” at the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II. There’s also another name in John’s life: the Argentine director Rodrigo Garcia. When he saw “The Story of Ronald, the McDonald’s Clown”, he immediately wanted to work with him. Two years later he achieved the impossible: “To be able to do a course with Rodrigo, I had to be aged between 25 and 31. I falsified my ID, I tricked the Ministry of Culture and I did everything to be with whom I really wanted to be with. One will do anything for love”.

Since 2006 he has also been working as Garcia’s assistant director, accompanying his performances in constant tours around the world. “Travelling is all about re-editing one’s mind, resting, seeing other people, forgetting things”.

In July 2011 be chose Berlin: “I looked at the theatre programmes.

Berlin is the best city in the world to see theatre and dance performances, there’s the Schaubühne, the Volksbühne or Dock 11.”

He remembers his meeting with WINK. John says he’s timid, he doesn’t love being photographed. But when we talk about photography he remembers his adolescence, a time he has hardly any images of. Photographs capture moments – now, more than ever, he wants them registered. When we photograph him at the Pestana Berlin Tiergarten Hotel we want him to remember this forever, the summer when his performances were preparing to leave Portugal and take over the world. It was to forget his shyness that John started doing theatre.

PESTANA’S INTERVIEW ENTREVISTA cARLOTA cAVAcO Carlota Cavaco, 33 anos, licenciada em Economia e pós-graduada em Finanças e Controlo Empresarial, rumou ao Funchal em 2007 para formar e dirigir a equipa de Controlo de Gestão do Grupo Pestana. Em 2009, um novo e aliciante desafio foi-lhe apresentado: ser directora geral do Casino da Madeira. Aos 30 anos, quem conseguiria resistir? De um “dia-a-dia à volta de folhas de Excel” passou para um quotidiano que nunca é igual. “O Casino era e é um negócio diferente.

Oferece entretenimento ao público local e estrangeiro, conta com uma sala mista de jogo, uma discoteca, dois restaurantes, várias salas de conferências, um auditório… Acho que o slogan que criámos é perfeito: Onde tudo acontece! Acredito que este é mesmo o sítio onde tudo pode acontecer! Onde podemos ter um milionário num minuto, uma exposição de um bom pintor, uma peça de teatro humorística, um casamento, um grupo de amigos a festejar, negócios a serem fechados, um concerto… Tudo à mesma hora, porque quer por dentro, como por fora, este é um projecto muito bem conseguido.”

“O brilhante arquitecto brasileiro Oscar Niemeyer desenhou uma lua (o Casino Park Hotel) e um sol (o Casino da Madeira). A ideia é tão boa que sinto que o casino ilumina o hotel. O hotel é uma lua em constante quarto crescente que nos inspira a fazer deste espaço o melhor espaço de entretenimento da ilha da Madeira”.

Para além do jogo e das suas incontáveis peripécias associadas, Carlota observa com humor o comportamento típico das várias nacionalidades de frequentadores: “Os ingleses vêm ao Casino da Madeira de quarta a sábado, atraídos pelo Jantar & Espectáculo do restaurante Bahia, onde podem assistir a um espectáculo de reconhecida qualidade internacional e feito à sua medida. No fim do jantar, dançam a pares, jogam 20 euros numa máquina de rolos simples, ou fazem um brinde com um cocktail antes de recolherem ao hotel. Já os asiáticos, homens ou mulheres, vêm sozinhos, nunca se exaltam, nunca festejam. Vestidos de branco e preto, sem adereço nem amuletos, entram e saem em total anonimato.

Por outro lado os eslavos, de meia-idade, chegam normalmente de táxi privado, acompanhados por mulheres bonitas, que jogam apenas para passar o tempo, enquanto os seus acompanhantes consomem boas garrafas de champanhe ou vinho de qualidade, e apostam em máquinas sofisticadas no máximo de linhas e à denominação mais alta. Gostam de fado e de provar as especialidades locais e não olham para o preço, apenas exigem excelência no serviço.”

“E todos”, conclui Carlota, “se sentem bem e integrados no ambiente do casino, cada vez mais habilitado para lhes proporcionar a satisfação dos seus diferentes gostos.”

Carlota Cavaco, aged 33, a graduate in Economy with a post-graduate course in Finance and Business Operations, headed for Funchal in 2007, to train and manage the Pestana Group’s Management Control team. In 2009 she was presented with a new and attractive challenge: to be the Managing Director of the Madeira Casino. At the age of 30, who could resist such an offer? From the “day to day of Excel sheets”, she moved to a daily life that is always different. “The Casino is a different business. Providing entertainment to locals and foreigners, it has a mixed games’ room, a disco, two restaurants, various conference rooms and an auditorium… I think the slogan we came up with is perfect. Where everything happens! I believe this really is the place where anything can happen! We can have, someone becoming a millionaire in just one minute, an exhibition by a good artist, comedy theatre, a wedding, a group of friends celebrating, business deals being closed or a concert…. All going on at the same time as, both indoors and outdoors, this project has been very well conceived.”

“The brilliant architect, Oscar Niemeyer designed a moon (the Casino Park Hotel) and a sun (the Madeira Casino). The idea is so good that I feel like the casino illuminates the hotel whilst the hotel is a constant crescent moon that inspires us to make this space the best place for entertainment on the Island of Madeira.”

In addition to gambling and the countless adventures associated to it, Carlota observes, with amusement, the typical behaviour of the various nationalities that visit the casino: “The British come to the Madeira Casino from Wednesdays to Saturdays, attracted by the Dinner & Show at the Bahia Restaurant, where they can watch a show of recognized international quality and tailor made for their needs. After dinner they dance in couples, spend Euros 20 on a simple, single-line slot machine, or make a toast with cocktails before retreating to the hotel. The Asians, on the other hand, be they men or women, come on their own, never get excited nor do they celebrate. Dressed in black and white, without any accessories or amulets, they come and go totally anonymously.

The Slavs, usually middle-aged, normally arrive in a private taxi, accompanied by beautiful women who gamble just to pass the time whilst their partners consume good bottles of champagne or high quality wine and gamble on sophisticated machines with the maximum number of lines, at the highest possible bet. They enjoy fado and tasting local specialities but money isn’t an object, they just demand excellent service”.

“All of them” concludes Carlota, “feel good and a part of the casino, which is increasingly qualified to satisfy their different needs.”

CORNMEAL AND BEAN CLAMS xERéM DE CONqUIlHas REcEITA DO cHEf SANcHO - Para 4 pessoas Lavar muito bem 200 g de conquilhas que se quer que abram num tacho com um pouco de azeite virgem extra, 1 dente de alho esmagado, 1 folha de louro, 1 dl de bom vinho branco e um pouco de coentros. Reservar.

Refogar depois em azeite ½ cebola picada e 1 dente de alho picado. Juntar o caldo onde abriram as conquilhas e água suficiente para perfazer ½ litro. Temperar com sal e pimenta. Quando a água começar a ferver, juntar 100 g de sêmola de milho. Baixa-se o lume e mexe-se até à farinha cozer e o xerém ganhar a consistência desejada. Junta-se mais um pouco de coentros picados e as conquilhas. Envolver bem e servir ainda quente.

- Serves 4 Wash 200g of clams in plenty water. Cook the clams in a pan, until they open, with a little extra virgin olive oil, 1 clove of crushed garlic, 1 bay leaf, 1 dl of good white wine and a little coriander.

Set aside.

Fry half a chopped onion and 1 clove of garlic in some olive oil.

Add the stock from the cooked clams and enough water to make half a litre. Season with salt and pepper. When the water starts to boil, add 100g of cornmeal. Turn down the heat and stir until the cornmeal cooks and reaches the desired consistency. Add a little more chopped coriander and the clams. Mix well and serve hot.

A Pousada de Faro, Palácio de Estoi nasce da recuperação de um antigo palácio do século xVIII, que pertencia inicialmente a um coronel, fidalgo da Corte, e que mais tarde foi comprado ao visconde de Estoi – José Francisco da Silva. O palácio foi mantido na respectiva família até 1987, ano em que foi comprado pela Câmara Municipal de Faro. O restaurante, o bar, a antiga capela e os três salões, reflectem o cuidado na recuperação deste edifício. No exterior, uma piscina e jardins ocupam parte duma propriedade com cerca de quatro hectares, perto das ruínas de Milreu. As antigas cavalariças do palácio foram convertidas em vários espaços, ideais para receberem reuniões e eventos. Num projecto da responsabilidade do arquitecto Gonçalo Byrne, a Pousada de Faro vem dar consistência a um novo conceito de Pousadas de Portugal, onde é possível desfrutar de banho turco, sauna, duche tropical e piscina interior aquecida com hidromassagem.

The Pousada de Faro, Palácio de Estoi is set in a former 18th century Palace that was initially owned by a colonel, Court nobleman, and was later bought by the Viscount of Estoi, José Francisco da Silva. After his death, the Palace remained in his family until 1987, the year it was bought by Faro Town Hall. The restaurant, bar, former chapel and three salons reflect the care than was taken in the restoration of this building. Outside, a pool and a garden occupy part of the property of about four hectares, close to the ruins of Milreu. The Palace’s former stables have been converted into various different areas, ideal for hosting meetings and events. The restoration project was developed by the Portuguese architect Gonçalo Byrne and reflects the new Pousadas de Portugal concept, where one can enjoy a Turkish bath, sauna, tropical shower and the indoor heated pool with hydro massage.

COzINHA VELHA-STyLE STEWED PARTRIDGE WITH CHESTNUTS AND GRAPES PERDIz EsTUFaDa COM CasTaNHas E UVas à COzINHa VElHa RECEITa DO CHEF HUgO aRaÚJO Comece por picar finamente 2 cebolas e 20 g de chalotas. De seguida, coloque um pouco de banha de porco num tacho ao lume.

Quando estiver bem quente, core as perdizes (já muito bem arranjadas e limpas) de maneira a que fiquem com aquela cor dourada bastante apetecível. Retire. Nessa mesma gordura junte as cebolas e as chalotas até conseguir um refogado em que a cebola fique translúcida. Quando obtiver essa textura, junte um pouco de vinho branco e uma colher de chá de massa pimentão e deixe refogar durante 5 minutos.

De seguida, junte as perdizes e adicione um pouco de água até cobrir as mesmas. Rectifique os temperos e deixe estufar em lume brando durante 2 horas para que fiquem bem macias.

Quando as perdizes estiverem cozinhadas, junte 100 ml de natas, 80 g de castanhas e 100 g de uvas red globe, deixando cozinhar por mais 10 minutos para que o molho ligue. Termine adicionando um pouco de vinho do Porto cerca de 2 minutos antes de retirar do lume.

Bom apetite.

Finely chop 2 onions and 20gr of shallots. Next place a little lard in a saucepan and heat. When it is very hot, sear the partridges (cleaned and gutted) until they are deliciously golden.

Remove. Add the onions and shallots to the same lard and fry until the onion becomes transparent. When you obtain this texture, add a little white wine and a teaspoon of red pepper paste.

Fry for 5 minutes.

Next, add the partridges and cover them with water. Season to taste and stew for 2 hours until they are very tender.

When the partridges are well cooked, add 100 ml of cream, 80g of chestnuts and 100g of Red Globe grapes. Leave to cook for another 10 minutes until the sauce thickens. Finish by adding a little Port wine about 2 minutes before removing from the heat.

Ela é a absoluta encarnação da Voz da língua portuguesa (e o Brasil que me perdoe).

Ele é o cineasta sem medo (o seu último filme foi nada menos que a adaptação do monumental Livro do Desassossego, de Fernando Pessoa).

Ela é a prometida. Ele cumpre as suas promessas que faz.

Ela levantou a voz mais alta do que nós. Ele viu.

O mundo rapidamente tratou de juntar os dois em várias colaborações: ele realizou-lhe os vídeoclips do primeiríssimo disco; ela cantou-lhe o assombro à capela no seu Filme do Desassossego; os dois quebraram várias barreiras ao levar o fado à baila no Lux, num espectáculo inédito.

CARMINHO & JOãO BOTELHO sentam-se de novo à mesa para uma entrevista mútua, zás.

Começam, claro, as senhoras.

She is the very incarnation of the Portuguese voice (forgive me, Brazil); He is the fearless filmmaker (his last film being no less than the adaptation of the monstrous Book of Disquiet, by Fernando Pessoa); She rose that voice of hers high above us, and he saw it. He immediately offered to direct the videos for her debut album; later She sang the utter astonishment of his [Film of] Disquiet; finally they conceived the unprecedented show that would come to break several taboos- Fado brought down to Lisbon’s main dance floor, Lux nightclub.

CARMINHO & JOãO BOTELHO once again take their places at the table for a mutual interview.

Ladies first.

CARMINHO: O que é intolerável enquanto trabalha?

JOãO: Conversas ao longe, bocejos ao perto.

C: Qual o sonho de menino que se repetiu, pelas noites da vida fora?

J: Voar em círculos? Quando era pequeno tinha a colecção de Júlio Verne em casa, mas eu nunca fui o herói dos meus sonhos — eram sempre interrompidos, não sei porquê. Nem mesmo o clássico sonho do voo escapou à fatalidade. Eram sempre voos sem pousadura.

C: Quem, na história do mundo, mais te marcou?

J: Leonardo Da Vinci, de caras. Não pela perfeição da pintura mas pelo modo de voar antes do tempo. Máquinas do voo inventadas 500 anos antes do tempo? Que génio! Propôs o enigma e a sua solução. Só não respondeu a um: Quem era a Mona Lisa? Ele próprio? [risos] C: Agora a sério, escolhes a roupa que vestes?

J: A cada momento. Quando se usa apenas duas cores — azul e preto — tem de se estar constantemente a preterir todas as outras, é muito cansativo.

C: Luz natural ou luz artificial?

J: Artificial, sempre. Mesmo a luz natural tento-a fazer sempre artificialmente. A arte nunca é a vida.

CARMINHO: What is most unbearable, while working?

JOÃO: Distant chattery, close-by yawns.

C: Can you tell me a recurrent childhood dream?

Flying in circles? When I was a little boy our house harboured the entire Jules Verne collection, but I was never the hero in my dreams- They were systematically interrupted, I can’t imagine why. Not even the classical Flight Dream escaped.

C: Who, in the world’s vast history has caught your eye, so to speak?

Leonardo da Vinci. Not for his painting virtuosity but for his flying visions 500 years ahead of time; for his ability to produce and respond to enigma.

He left one unsolved, though: who was Mona Lisa, La Gioconda? Himself? (laughs) C: Seriously now, do you really choose what to wear?

J: Every day. To dress in black or navy blue exclusively implies the constant choice of avoiding every (other) colour.

C: Natural light vs. Artificial light?

J: Artificial. Always. Even natural light is always artificially made. Life is never art.

JOãO: De muito nova começou a Carmo. Quando deu conta que tinha o dom?

CARMINHO: Cantar esteve sempre no centro. Desde que me conheço que a música faz parte dos programas em família e sabia que todos tínhamos uma certa aptidão para a música. O dom revelou-se quando me dei conta do mundo.

J: Duas, três referências que a marcaram (do fado & outros)?

C: Muitas são as estrelas que vêm ao mundo para iluminar o espírito e as ideias do outro. A mim, iluminou-me a Madre Teresa de Calcutá, pela sua perseverança no dia-a-dia, pela sua brilhante clareza de palavra. Marcaram-me os Queen e o seu Freddie Mercury. Foi de tal maneira, que me lembro de como chorei no dia em que soube da sua morte. Tinha sete anos.

J: Tem a noção que o seu modo de cantar muda o sentido de um fado? Fale-me dos seus gestos, da voz que sai do interior.

C: Canto os fados em que acredito, os fados que sei sentir. Talvez por isso traga para cada um deles algo que, sendo meu, os torna diferentes… não sei. Os meus gestos e a minha voz são descontroladamente dirigidos pelo sentir. É a ti que tenho de fazer a pergunta: Como são?

J: Como se veste, como decide o estilo?

Tenho um estilo descontraído. Gosto de peças simples mas às vezes é bom ir ao armário da avó resgatar um casaco.

J: Sonhos de futuro?

C: Amo incondicionalmente o que faço por isso o meu sonho é continuar a ter desafios e experiências na música, conseguindo sempre manter-me saudável, fiel e com os pés na minha terra.

JOÃO: You had a very early start. When did you realise you where gifted?

CARMINHO: Singing has always been at the core of my life. Music and family go together. The gift revealed itself when I first became aware of the world.

J: Two, three keystone references. Can you tell me them?

Many are the stars who come to this world to cast light over one’s spirit and ideas. My personal illumination would have to be Mother Teresa of Calcutta for her daily persistence, for her brilliant clarity of speech. Also, Queen and their Freddie Mercury moved me so, I remember clearly the day I mourned his loss. I was seven years old.

J: Are you aware that the way you sing alters the meaning of a song? Tell me about the gestures, about the voice that comes from within.

I sing only those I believe in, those I understand. Emotionally wise. Maybe that is the reason why they carry something different, I wouldn’t know, how could I? I rely on you to provide the answer for this question. (smiles) J: How about in terms of style, how do you decide yours?

C: I have a casual style. I prefer simple items but once in a while it’s good to go to granny’s cupboard to borrow a coat.

J: Dreams for the future?

There is unconditional love for what I do therefore my dream is to keep on facing new challenges and higher experiences, while keeping healthy, faithful and with both feet on the ground. My ground.

De Louboutin sabíamos já os detalhes de uma vida que, tocada pelo talento e pelo dom da elegância, o fizeram emergir do bairro operário parisiense onde nasceu para o atelier de Charles Jourdan, outro grande nome da arte do calçado. Desde aí, o caminho tem vindo a ser percorrido, pleno de viagens e inspiração. A WINK teve o privilégio de o encontrar, calmo e sereno como só um grande sabe ser. Recebeu-nos a sul do rio Sado, morada da sua nova casa de férias e refúgio criativo.

WINK: Quando fica num quarto de hotel, costuma ter algum ritual?

CHRISTIAN: Peço imediatamente uma ligação à internet!

Quando chego ao quarto, a primeira coisa que faço é baixar a potência do ar condicionado e certificar-me que a janela está aberta. Nada relacionado com o fumo dos cigarros, mais com o meu desejo romântico de saltar… Por causa do amor, claro! Há outra coisa que faço sempre, acho que posso contar… Quando vou à casa de banho, pego em todos os sabonetes e cremes do hotel e guardo-os muito bem guardados no meu nécessaire…

WINK: O que é que faz quando se quer sentir em casa e o que é que faz num hotel que nunca faria em casa?

CHRISTIAN: Deixo a mala de viagem aberta e aos pés da cama.

Só desfaço os casacos e calças, que penduro no armário. O resto fica tudo dentro da mala. Em 15 minutos consigo desarrumar tudo à minha volta, isso faz-me sentir em casa.

WINK: Como é que as viagens influem no seu trabalho e no seu processo criativo?

CHRISTIAN: Para mim, viajar afecta-me positivamente, não só porque aproveito o tempo do avião para me concentrar, como também porque todas as novas energias que encontro me dão imensa vitalidade criativa.

WINK: Quais são os seus destinos preferidos?

CHRISTIAN: Gosto da Califórnia, do México e de Lisboa.

WINK: Gostava de ter um hotel?

CHRISTIAN: Adorava ter um hotel! É mesmo um sonho que tenho. Um hotel de média dimensão, no máximo com 40 quartos, uma vista maravilhosa, um restaurante intenso e uma óptima atmosfera. Daria também uma atenção especial ao staff, que seria mais informal do que o costume mas simpático e cheio de charme.

When one talks about women’s shoe design, Christian Louboutin immediately comes to mind. His emblematic red-soled shoes have marked the state of the art of fashion in recent years. We already know the details of a life that, touched by talent and the gift of elegance, made him emerge from a Parisian workingclass district to the atelier of another great shoe-designer, Charles Jourdan. Since then, his life has been led full of journeys and inspirations.

WINK had the privilege of meeting him, calm and serene as only a great man knows how. He welcomed us at his new holiday home and creative refuge, south of the river Sado.

WINK: Do you have any rituals when staying at a hotel?

CHRISTIAN: I immediately request internet access! When I get to the room, the first thing I do is to turn down the air conditioning and check that the window is open, nothing to do with cigarette smoke, but rather my romantic desire to jump… because of love, of course! There’s something else I always do, that I think I can tell you… When I get to the bathroom, I take all the little hotel soaps and creams and put them away very carefully in my wash bag…

WINK: What do you do to make you feel at home and what do you do that you would never do at home?

CHRISTIAN: I leave my suitcase open, at the foot of my bed and only unpack jackets and trousers, which I hang in the wardrobe.

The rest stays in the suitcase. It takes me 15 minutes to mess everything up around me, which makes me feel at home.

WINK: How does travelling influence your work and creative process?

CHRISTIAN: Travelling influences me positively because not only do I get time to concentrate on planes, but also all the new energies I encounter give me a lot of creative vitality.

WINK: Which are your favourite destinations?

CHRISTIAN: I like California, Mexico and Lisbon.

WINK: Would you like to own a hotel?

CHRISTIAN: I would love to have a hotel! It’s one of my dreams. A medium-sized hotel, up to 40 rooms, with a fabulous view, an energetic restaurant with a great atmosphere. I would pay special attention to the staff, who would be more informal than usual but full of charm.
