Dear Guest Dionísio Pestana Caro Hóspede, Estamos de volta. É com o agrado de sempre que lhe dou as boas-vindas.

A pandemia, que assolou o mundo, apanhou-nos a todos de surpresa e obrigou-nos a uma adaptação urgente a um novo tempo, a um novo mundo, onde é imperativa uma nova tomada de consciência.

Com exceção dos poucos hotéis que orgulhosamente mantivemos abertos para alojar médicos e enfermeiros que, heroicamente, na linha da frente, salvaram tantas vidas, encerrámos, num ápice, todos os demais. A nossa principal preocupação foi não deixar ninguém para trás. Sobretudo os milhares de nossos dedicados colaboradores e centenas de fornecedores que muito dependiam de nós. Em simultâneo, não podíamos, de igual modo, deixar de apoiar os serviços e profissionais de saúde no combate à pandemia. Desde o fornecimento de refeições e roupa, passando pela disponibilização de hotéis, até à oferta de 20 ventiladores.

Desde as américas, do sul e do norte, passando por África, pela Madeira, pelos Açores e pela GrãBretanha, até à Europa continental, da periferia peninsular ibérica ao centro, praticámos, com muito gosto, solidariedade, um sentimento inscrito de forma indelével no ADN do Pestana Hotel Group.

Também, quando do fecho, criámos um “think tank”, multinacional e multidisciplinar, para preparar as “guidelines” para a retoma. Para

estarmos seguros e confiantes quando reabríssemos os hotéis.

Eis chegada a hora que todos ansiávamos, para recebermos, com o mesmo sorriso nos lábios, os nossos hóspedes!

Toda esta situação exigiu a introdução de adaptações nos hotéis, na forma de receber, nos procedimentos que tínhamos como adquiridos e até na forma de comunicarmos. Exemplo disso é a WINK Magazine, agora também disponível online através da plataforma pressreader.com.

Assim, todos os semestres poderá acompanhar-nos na nossa habitual descoberta do Mundo.

Nesta 19.º edição, dedicada ao tema da consciência, o destaque da WINK vai para a abertura do 100º hotel do grupo. Bem no coração de Manhattan, com a mais privilegiada localização, abrimos o Pestana Park Avenue, um boutique hotel onde se respira Portugal. Ainda em Nova Iorque, quer viaje em trabalho ou em lazer, reserve tempo para explorar todas as novidades que descobrimos e que partilhamos no nosso guia de viagem.

Viajar é um bilhete para liberdade e só ficou mais livre quem conseguiu viajar até ao seu interior e ganhar uma nova consciência. Sobre este tema, realçamos os incríveis testemunhos recolhidos nesta revista e que nos ajudam a reverter esta fase em crescimento.

Dear Guest, We're back. It’s always a pleasure to welcome you. The pandemic, which has devastated the world, took us all by surprise and forced us to urgently adapt to new times and a new world, where the rise of a new consciousness is imperative.

With the exception of a few hotels, which we proudly kept open to accommodate doctors and nurses who heroically saved so many lives on the front lines, we closed all the others in a flash. Our greatest concern was not to leave anyone behind. Especially our thousands of dedicated workers and hundreds of suppliers who were very dependent on us. At the same time, we couldn't help but support health services and professionals in combating the pandemic. From the provision of meals and clothes, and making our hotel rooms available, to the donation of 20 ventilators. From the Americas, from south to north, Africa, Madeira, the Azores and Great Britain to Continental Europe including the Iberian Peninsula and centre, we practiced with great pleasure, solidarity, a feeling imprinted indelibly

in the Pestana Hotel Group’s DNA. Also, when we were closing, we created a multinational and multidisciplinary “think tank” to prepare the guidelines to ensure that we would all be safe and confident when we reopened the hotels. Now, the moment we have all been waiting for has finally arrived - to welcome our guests, with our usual smile!

The situation demanded changes in the hotels, in the way we welcome guests, in the procedures we already had in place and even in the way we communicate. An example of this is WINK Magazine, now also available online on the pressreader.com platform. This way, every semester, you will be able to follow us on our discovery of the World.

In this 19th edition, dedicated to the theme of consciousness, WINK highlights the inauguration of the Group's 100th hotel. At the most privileged location, right in the heart of Manhattan, we opened the Pestana Park Avenue, a boutique hotel which lives and breathes Portugal. When in New York, whether you are traveling for business or pleasure, take time to explore all

the places we discovered and have shared with you in our travel guide.

Traveling is a ticket to freedom, especially for those who manage to travel to their inner self and gain new consciousness. On this topic, we highlight the incredible testimonies collected here in this magazine, which help us to transform this phase into one of growth.

Now is the time to give Portugal and all that belongs to us, the value they are due. Therefore, our suggestion is that you travel the world of Portugal.

The reopening plan started on the 5th of June. Here we are to welcome you with an open heart. If you are a regular guest, you will notice some changes, a result of our strict compliance with the authorities’ guidelines that are based on a single commitment: everyone’s safety. We are doing everything we can in order to return to normal life and make the Pestana brand your comfort zone.

A WINK é uma revista bianual de viagens e ideias. Após uma década a editar esta publicação, sentimos que, além de ser um excelente veículo de inspiração e informação, também poderia ser um óptimo meio para transmitir outro tipo de mensagens e ideias que levassem a uma reflexão mais profunda acerca da vida e da existência... E assim, desde 2019, cada edição é dedicada a um tema específico, aproveitando as viagens pelos destinos Pestana para conversar com várias pessoas mais conceituadas e convidá-las a partilhar a sua opinião e ideias acerca do tema que inspira essa edição.

O ano passado, quando escolhemos os temas para este ano, estávamos longe de saber que viriam a fazer tanto sentido.

“Consciência” foi o tema escolhido para esta edição de Verão e “Esperança” para a de Inverno.

Então, em Janeiro, viajámos até Nova York para comemorar a abertura do centésimo hotel do grupo Pestana e foi aí que iniciámos as nossas conversas sobre a “Consciência”. Procurámos saber como estava a consciência dos nova-iorquinos, enquanto a nossa própria consciência ia sendo tomada por inquietações e por incertezas que provocavam alguma tensão e receio.

Entretanto, aos poucos, o pânico e a vontade de apanhar o primeiro

avião para regressar a casa foi sendo ultrapassado pela emoção de estarmos em NY, dado que tudo o que havia a ver e a fazer nos levava a esquecer as noticias e a concentrarmo-nos em aproveitar ao máximo cada momento até ao ultimo minuto. Cumprida a nossa missão em NY, regressámos a casa e aí rebentou a “Bomba”. O tal vírus expandia-se mundo fora. A pandemia foi declarada pela OMS! Seguros em casa, tivemos tempo para questionar tudo, inclusive esta edição da WINK. No momento de incerteza que todos vivíamos, devido á pandemia e a tudo o que ela trazia consigo, nada fazia sentido, muito menos estarmos a produzir uma revista de viagens. Chegámos a ponderar transforma-la numa “cápsula“ do ADN Português, com toda a informação do momento, para o caso de estarmos próximos do fim.

Na parede do escritório, tínhamos escrito a palavra “Esperança”, tema inspirador da próxima edição, e foi essa esperança que nos levou a prosseguir e a concluir a presente edição.

Afinal, ainda era possível viajar...

Bastava irmos “para fora cá dentro”... Não só redescobrindo o mundo dentro deste pequeno grande país que é Portugal, mas também percebendo que as respostas que procuramos podem estar “cá dentro”...

alguns conceituados autores portugueses, tal como o Dr. Luis Portela e Maria Ferreira da Silva, que, entre outros, integram esta edição.

Boa viagem em boa companhia... a de uma consciência leve e plena.

WINK is a biannual travel and ideas magazine. Now, almost a decade after the magazine was launched, we feel that in addition to being an excellent vehicle for travel inspiration and information, it is also a great way to convey other messages and ideas that lead to a more profound reflection on life and existence.

Therefore, since 2019, we have been dedicating each edition to a specific theme. Making the most of our trips to Pestana destinations, we meet and chat to local highly regarded thinkers, inviting them to share their opinions and ideas on the theme.

Last year, when we chose this year’s themes, little did we know how relevant they would come to be. “Consciousness” was the theme chosen for this year's summer edition and “Hope” for our winter edition.

In January, we travelled to New York to celebrate the opening of the Pestana Group’s 100th hotel and it was there that our conversations on consciousness began. We wanted to hear New Yorkers' thoughts on consciousness, whilst our own thoughts were being taken over by unrest and uncertainty causing tension and fear. Then, the panic and the desire to catch the first plane

back home, started to be replaced by all the thrill of being in New York.

We were so caught up in everything we had to see and do that we forgot the news and focused on making the most of every single moment, until the very last minute. With our mission accomplished in New York, we returned home and that was when things went horribly wrong.

The virus was spreading across the world and was declared a pandemic by the WHO. Safe at home, we had time to question everything, including this edition. With all the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic, nothing seemed to make sense, far less producing a travel magazine. We even considered turning it into a “capsule” of the Portuguese DNA, containing detailed information on what was happening, just in case the end was nigh. We had written the word “hope”, our theme for the next edition, on one of the office walls and it was this hope that urged us to continue and conclude this edition.

After all, it was still possible to travel, as long as we stayed within our boarders. We set off to rediscover the world, in this small great country and realized that perhaps the answers we were looking for, could be found right here, in the articles written by Portuguese authors, Dr. Luis Portela and Maria Ferreira da Silva, as well as other contributors to this edition.

The new Pestana Park Avenue is the Pestana Hotel Group’s hundredth hotel, inaugurated 5 decades after the Pestana Hotel Group was born on the Island of Madeira.

Foi em Fevereiro passado que o Pestana Park Avenue abriu as suas portas para se dar a conhecer à comunidade de Nova York. Ao longo de 3 dias, parceiros, operadores e jornalistas ficaram a conhecer o 100º hotel do Pestana Hotel Group.

Os 28 andares do hotel, abertos a todos os convidados, tornaram-se numa passarela de curiosos e fãs da marca... que quiseram ver de perto esta “casa portuguesa” em pleno coração de Nova Iorque.

Um dos muitos eventos que marcou a abertura do hotel foi a revelação dos quartos de autor, um projeto com assinatura Pestana que revela a criatividade portuguesa ao mundo.

In February 2020, the Pestana Park Avenue opened its doors to the New York Community.

Over three days, partners, operators and journalists visited the Pestana Hotel Group's 100th hotel.

The hotel’s 28 floors, open to all the guests, became a catwalk for those interested and fans of the Pestana brand who were eager to get to know, firsthand, this “Portuguese house” in the heart of New York.

One of the many events that marked the opening of the hotel was the revelation of the art suites, a Pestana project that showcases Portuguese creativity to the world.

No âmbito da abertura do Hotel Pestana Park Avenue, em Nova Iorque, o Pestana Hotel Group convidou quatro dos seus principais parceiros portugueses a personalizarem quatro das suites do topo do hotel.

In the lead up to the opening of the Hotel Pestana Park Avenue in New York, the Pestana Hotel Group invited four of its main Portuguese partners to personalize four of the suites at the top of the hotel.

A Viúva Lamego, a centenária marca de cerâmica portuguesa, responsável pelo enorme painel de azulejos que marca o pátio, junto à sala dos pequenos almoços, decorou a sua suite a partir de um original painel de azulejos Bela Silva.

Outro dos parceiros foi a famosa saboneteira de luxo portuguesa Castelbel, responsável por todas as amenities do hotel. Na sua intervenção na suite destaca-se a inovadora utilização das suas embalagens num painel e num abajur. A marca de têxtil e moda portuguesa, que reinterpreta o património português, Bainha de Copas, responsável, entre outras coisas, pelas colchas das camas de todo o hotel, que representavam por completo a alma lusa, com motivos de azulejos à Nossa Senhora da Nazaré foi outra das marcas convidadas. Na sua intervenção, a Bainha de Copas levou até Nova Iorque a imagem do típico estendal português de roupa.

A quarta convidada para a iniciativa foi a fotógrafa portuguesa, Cátia Castel-Branco,

autora de todas as fotografias espalhadas pelo Hotel, tanto em áreas sociais como nos quartos.

Na sua intervenção, Cátia Castel-Branco apresenta desde o tropicalismo de São Tomé ao surrealismo de uma “janela” no tecto para que tenha sempre presente o céu.

A WINK acompanhou a apresentação das suites e esteve à conversa com dois dos parceiros para conhecer melhor as suas fontes de inspiração e o que retiveram desta experiência.

Viúva Lamego, the century-old Portuguese ceramics brand, responsible for the huge tile panel that marks the patio next to the breakfast room, decorated her suite based on an original tile panel by the Portuguese ceramics artist, Bela Silva.

Another of the partners of this initiative, the renowned Portuguese luxury soap brand, Castelbel, is responsible for all of the hotel's amenities. In her suite intervention, the innovative use of packaging on a panel and a lamp, stands out.

Bainha de Copas, the Portuguese textile and fashion brand, known for 51

its reinterpretation of Portuguese heritage, was another of the brands invited to participate. Among other things, the brand is responsible for all the hotel bedspreads that beautifully represent the Portuguese soul, with tile motifs depicting Our Lady of Nazareth. For this intervention, Bainha de Copas took to New York the typical image of the Portuguese clothes line.

The fourth guest invited to participate is the Portuguese photographer, Cátia Castel-Branco, author of all the photographs found throughout the hotel, both in the social areas and the rooms.

In her intervention, Cátia CastelBranco presents everything from the tropics of São Tomé to the surrealism of a “window” on the ceiling so that the sky is always present.

WINK attended the opening of the suites and spoke to two of the partners to learn more about what had inspired their interventions and what they feel they gained from this experience.

Qual a principal fonte de inspiração para a vossa intervenção?

Primeiro, e sempre, a realidade, a tradição, as histórias contadas e vividas, as origens e o património, seja ele um monumento ou um sentimento. Esta é a essência da Bainha de Copas. As vistas sobre Nova Iorque entraram imediatamente em diálogo com as vistas típicas de Lisboa. Abriu-se espaço para uma "conversa" numa das paredes do quarto e assim se criou uma instalação que, na "Bainha de Copas Avenue", no 25º andar do Pestana Park Avenue Hotel, trouxe para o coração de Manhattan um pouco do pitoresco colorido de Lisboa. Pusemos Portugal à janela, frente a frente com uma inesperada vizinha, a cosmopolita Nova Iorque.

Como correu a experiência?

Dois momentos muito importantes.

O que mais lhe atraiu na suite?

A vista, deslumbrante, ampla, sobre Nova Iorque. Dá-nos a sensação de não ter limites.

Do hotel em geral, o que mais apreciaram?

A simpatia de toda a equipa. A zona de pequeno almoço é "convertível" em lugar de estar, de conversar, o que a torna muito simpática; e a sensação "de casa" mal se entra: sorriso, aroma a café e, se viermos a tempo, um pastel de nata. Tudo junto torna este hotel uma elegante embaixada da hospitalidade portuguesa.

E em Manhattan, que sítios destacaria como obrigatórios?

Para quem trabalha em comunicação e design, uma livraria, uma montra, um espectáculo, um passeio são fontes de inspiração que não conseguimos catalogar logo, mas que, mais tarde e durante muito tempo, percebemos que permanecem em nós. Imperdível: o MET e o Central Park. E será muito interessante acompanhar o crescimento de Hudson Yards, que tem vindo a ganhar uma nova magia.

Que sensações guarda desta viagem? Sente que esta viagem e esta experiência lhe despertou alguma nova consciência?

Uma semana depois no regresso dessa viagem o mundo parou por causa da pandemia. Pensar que é possível parar Nova Iorque é algo estranho. A consciência de que até a cidade que nunca dorme teve que ficar em casa. A ideia de casa, da importância de estar bem em casa, nunca me tinha entrado desta forma portas adentro: there's no "palace" like home.

What was the main source of inspiration for your art intervention?

First and foremost, reality, tradition, stories told and experienced, origins and heritage, be it of a monument or a feeling. This is the essence of Bainha de Copas. The views over New York immediately dialoguing with the typical views of Lisbon. There was space for a "conversation" on one of the room’s walls where we created an installation where, the "Bainha de Copas' Avenue", on the 25th floor of the Pestana Park Avenue Hotel, brings to the heart of Manhattan, a touch of picturesque, colourful Lisbon. We placed Portugal at the window, face-to-face with its unexpected neighbour, cosmopolitan New York.

Tell us a little about this experience.

Is there anything you would like to highlight?

Two very important moments.

First, the challenge launched by the Pestana Hotel Group which brings contemporary visibility to our culture by inviting Portuguese companies to participate in this initiative. Along with the challenge, confidence in its realization, making it all happen, without any "ifs" or "buts", when it came to the Bainha de Copos project, which was completed just as it had originally been presented. In addition to this, being able to welcome visitors for three days, getting such distinct feedback firsthand and in different languages. It was extremely gratifying.

What did you like most about your suite?

The breath-taking, panoramic view over New York. It makes us feel it has no limits.

What about the hotel in general, what appealed to you most?

The friendliness of the entire team, the breakfast area which is "converted" into a living room, a place for a chat,

making it very friendly. The way we are made to feel at home as soon as we arrive: a smile, the smell of coffee wafting in the air and the typical Portuguese pastel de nata if we get there in time. All in all, this hotel is an elegant embassy of Portuguese hospitality.

What are the must-see places near the hotel?

The hotel’s great, central location, means that everything's close by. The Morgan Library & Museum, for its exhibitions and space.

What places in Manhattan, warrant a visit?

For those working in communication or design, a bookstore, a shop window display, a show or simply taking a walk are sources of inspiration that we 53

are unable to take in immediately but later realize that they have remained within us for a long time. Must-see: the Met and Central Park. It will be very interesting to follow the development of Hudson Yards, which is already looking magic.

What feelings have you been left with after this trip? Has this experience awakened any new awareness in you?

A week after we returned from the trip, the world came to a halt due to the pandemic. To think that it is possible to stop New York is strange and takes a while to sink in. The awareness that even the city that never sleeps had to stay home. The idea of home and the awareness of the importance of staying safe at home, had never occurred to me: there's no "palace" like home.

inspiração para a vossa intervenção?

Inspirámo-nos nas coleções aromáticas Castelbel Hello Cities e Olá Portugal, que hoje incluem 29 cidades ou regiões espalhadas pelo globo, mas que começaram por ser uma homenagem aos mercados internacionais mais importantes para nós, ao retratar Nova Iorque, Paris, Londres e Roma. Estas edições especiais de sabonetes, velas e saquetas perfumadas foram criadas em 2015 para proporcionar uma autêntica viagem olfativa pelas principais cidades mundiais, ao reproduzir as fragrâncias mais características e retratar os símbolos de cada local, como monumentos e outros elementos arquitetónicos, meios de transporte, trajes típicos e ícones culturais… até mesmo a cor do céu! Ora, esta representação foi tão bem conseguida que, em 2018, a TAP decidiu lançar, em parceria connosco, kits de conforto sob esta temática.

Como correu a experiência?

Destaca algum momento no processo?

Foi uma experiência extraordinariamente positiva, pela forma como a equipa do Pestana Park Avenue acolheu a nossa ideia e nos ajudou a concretizá-la.

luxo Bainha de Copas se juntaram para me ajudar a instalar um painel de sabonetes por cima da cama do Quarto Castelbel. É gente assim – desenrascada e sem peneiras – que faz a magia acontecer!

O que mais lhe atraiu na suite?

O conforto da cama, a vista panorâmica sobre a cidade e a varanda envidraçada, que nunca imaginei ser possível encontrar em Manhattan! É claro que o facto de o quarto em si ser maravilhoso e ter uma vista incrível foi determinante para o sucesso do projeto, mas, para mim, o mais importante foi a forma empenhada e profissional como as pessoas lidaram com ele. Um bom exemplo aconteceu quando vi um senhor alto e elegante, de fato e gravata, com um berbequim na mão, a corrigir o alinhamento do abajur de saquetas perfumadas que fizemos para o candeeiro do quarto: consegue imaginar a minha surpresa quando percebi que quem estava a fazer aquele trabalho era o diretor do hotel?!

Outro momento marcante (porque inesperado) foi aquele em que a Sofia Fernandes, diretora executiva do Pestana Hotel Group, que nos convidou para ficarmos alojados no hotel e a criadora da marca de 54

Do hotel em geral, o que mais apreciaram?

Adorei a localização, a decoração (especialmente as mantas tapa pés, nas camas), as amenities Castelbel e a simpatia do staff!

Que sensações guarda desta viagem? Sente que esta viagem e esta experiência lhe despertou alguma nova consciência?

Guardo o prazer de comer um pastel de nata na receção, em cada regresso ao hotel, a emoção de ouvir fado ao vivo nas noites de apresentação do hotel à imprensa, e a surpresa de receber imensas mensagens de parabéns de gente que tinha ficado em Portugal, felicitando a Castelbel pela nossa associação a esta grande iniciativa. Mas, acima de tudo, recordo o enorme orgulho que senti em ser portuguesa, a

par das muitas marcas que podem ser encontradas no hotel: da Bainha de Copas à Viúva Lamego, da Castelbel à Amalia Home Collection, da Vista Alegre ao próprio Pestana Hotel Group. E a consciência de que tudo o que estas empresas exportadoras fazem, fazem com brio e, por isso, (muito!) bem.

What was the main source of inspiration for your art intervention?

We were inspired by the Castelbel Hello Cities and Olá Portugal city-inspired aromatic collections. What started as a tribute to our most important international market, portraying New York, Paris, London and Rome, now includes collections from 29 cities or regions spread across the globe.These special edition soaps, candles and scented sachets were created in 2015 to provide an authentic olfactory journey through the world’s main cities, replicating the most typical fragrances and symbols of each place, such as monuments and other architectural elements, means of transport, typical costumes, cultural icons and even the colour of the sky!

The collections were so successful that in 2018, TAP decided to launch, in partnership with us, comfort kits under the same theme.

What about the hotel in general, what appealed to you most?

I love the location, decor (especially the foot covers on the beds), the Castelbel amenities and the friendliness of the staff!

Tell us a little about this experience. Is there anything you would like to highlight?

It was an extraordinarily positive experience, due to the way the Pestana Park Avenue team welcomed our idea and helped us make it happen. Of course,

What did you like most about your suite?

The comfortable bed, panoramic view over the city and the glassed-in balcony, something I never imagined I would find in Manhattan!

the fact that the room itself was wonderful and had an incredible view was a decisive factor in the project’s success. However, the most important thing for me was the commitment and professionalism of all those involved. A good example of this was when I saw a tall, elegant man, in a suit and tie, with a drill in his hand, fixing the alignment of the scented sachet lampshade we made for the room. Imagine how surprised I was when I realized that he was the Hotel Manager?! Another memorable moment (because it was so unexpected) was when Sofia Fernandes ,the Executive Director of the Pestana Hotel Group, who invited us to stay at the hotel, and the creator of the luxury brand Bainha de Copas came to help me install a soap panel above the bed of the Castelbel room.

What feelings have you been left with after this trip? Has this experience awakened any new awareness in you?

I will never forget the pleasure of eating a pastel de nata at the reception, whenever I returned to the hotel, the thrill of listening to live fado music on the nights that the hotel was presented to the Portuguese and American press, and the surprise of receiving so many messages from people back in Portugal, congratulating Castelbel on our partnership in this great initiative.

Above all, however, I will always remember how proud I felt to be Portuguese, just like the many brands that can be found at the hotel: from Bainha de Copas, Viúva Lamego, Castelbel, the Amalia Home Collection and Vista Alegre to the Pestana Hotel Group itself…

All of this made me aware of the fact that everything these exporting companies do, they do with pride and therefore, (extremely!) well. 

On Foot NEW YORK CITY Foi em fevereiro passado que fomos até Nova Iorque.

A abertura do Pestana Park Avenue Hotel foi a nossa grande motivação para visitar a cidade.

Para além disso, a agenda faziase lotada de compromissos a cumprir. Eram castings, fotografias, entrevistas, encontrar os cenários e os “looks” ideais e tantos outros afazeres, que saber por onde começar era um enorme desafio!

Bem cedo, deixámos o hotel Pestana Park Avenue na rua E 39th St, cuja localização foi uma grande aliada da nossa agenda. A pé, seguimos a nossa rota e pelo caminho íamos descobrindo a cidade. Do Empire State Building, que muito generosamente toca o céu e nos enche de grandiosidade, fomos até à Union Square, a praça que

tem no nome a palavra união porque foi o lugar escolhido para as manifestações de apoio ao Exército da União durante a Guerra Civil. Hoje, assume um importante papel enquanto espaço comercial no centro da cidade. Ali encontrámos um mercado biológico e ficámos a saber que, a partir daquele dia, os nova-iorquinos implementavam uma medida de apoio à sustentabilidade do planeta. Não haveria mais sacos de plástico em toda a cidade!

We visited New York last February, the opening of the Pestana Park Avenue Hotel being our main motivation to visit the city. In addition to attending the opening party, our agenda was full of other commitments such as castings, photo shoots, interviews and scouting for the ideal locations 56

and “looks” and so many other tasks. Knowing where to begin was a huge challenge! Early in the morning, we left the Pestana Park Avenue Hotel at E 39th St, a location which was our greatest ally.

We set off on foot, discovering the city as we went followed our route.

From the Empire State Building, which very generously touches the sky and fills us with grandeur, we headed to Union Square, that owes its name to the demonstrations that took place there to support the Union Army during the American Civil War. Today, it plays an important role as a shopping area in the city centre. There we found an organic market and learned that, from that day onwards New Yorkers were introducing a measure for a more sustainable planet. Plastic bags were to be banned in the entire city!

Chegámos à “via larga”, ou seja, à Broadway! É impossível ficar indiferente a qualquer pormenor.

Não resistimos e entrámos em todas as lojas que o tempo nos autorizou. Urban Outfitters, Uniqlo e todos os Footlockers por onde passávamos. Aqui fizemos algumas descobertas bem interessantes, por exemplo, o preço dos ténis varia muito de loja para loja e, por isso, vale a pena resistir à primeira tentação. E assim seguimos pelas transversais e perpendiculares da Broadway, sem perder de vista as montras das grandes marcas.

We reached Broadway where it is impossible to remain indifferent to all the details. We couldn't help going into all the shops that we had time to visit. Urban Outfitters, Uniqlo and all the Footlockers we came across. Here we made some very interesting discoveries, for example, the price of sneakers varies a lot from shop to shop and it’s therefore worth shopping around for the best price. We continued along the transversal and perpendicular lines of Broadway, without ever losing sight of the window displays of the luxury brands.

As lojas em segunda mão são uma constante em Nova Iorque e têm vida própria! Não só incentivam à reciclagem, como apoiam várias causas e associações doando parte das suas receitas.

Contrasting with all the excessive consumption of glamour, we witnessed an increased awareness of the problems that result from exaggeration, excess and disposable products. Second-hand shops are everywhere in New York and have a life of their own! Not only do they encourage recycling, they also support various causes and NGOs by donating part of their revenues to them. They buy, sell and exchange second-hand items.

A Buffalo Exchange e a Housing Works são alguns exemplos.

Aqui, pessoas de todo o mundo, atraídas pelos brilhos e padrões, buscam e rebuscam aqueles oásis de roupa e encontram verdadeiras relíquias. É preciso tempo, paciência e muito bom olho. Há quem aqui descubra as tendências da estação.

Os “buyers” não descansam enquanto não enchem os seus trolleys e malas gigantes, para revender, uso pessoal, um trabalho específico, para modificar, reciclar ou inspirar o novo. Muitos “buyers” trabalham para grandes marcas, levando ideias de um pormenor para os novos looks. Um bolso, uma manga, um decote…

Na nossa incursão ao maravilhoso mundo da moda, fizemos mais algumas descobertas surpreendentes.

Albright, na 62 Cooper Sq. Uma autêntica biblioteca de moda criada por Irene Albright, uma senhora que ao longo da sua vida tem vindo a dar lar às melhores criações de moda. Sob a direção criativa de Patricia Black, esta biblioteca de moda tornouse um recurso essencial para estilistas, designers, celebridades ou qualquer pessoa. Seja para uma produção de moda ou publicidade, seja para uso pessoal ou seja como recurso de última hora porque surgiu um evento inesperado, aqui encontra a solução.

Buffalo Exchange and Housing Works are just two examples. Here, people from all over the world, attracted by the sequins and patterns, rummage through this oasis of clothing and find real relics.

It takes time, patience and a good eye. Some people discover the next season’s trends here. Buyers won't stop until they fill their giant trolleys and suitcases with clothes to resell, for personal use, for a specific job, to modify, recycle or inspire the new. Many work for major brands, taking home items with details that inspire new looks. A pocket, a sleeve, a neckline etc.

During our expedition into the wonderful world of fashion, we made some other surprising discoveries. Albright, on 62 Cooper Sq. An authentic fashion library created by Irene Albright, a lady who throughout her life has provided a home for the best fashion creations. Under the creative direction of Patricia Black, this fashion library has become an essential resource for stylists, designers, celebrities or anyone else. Here you’ll find just what you need, for a fashion or advertising shoot, for personal use or an outfit to wear for an event you have just been invited to.

Chegámos ao World Trade Center (WTC), um edifício brilhante e dinâmico inaugurado em 2014, que se tornou um dos principais pontos de referência da cidade.

Nesta região erguem-se vários edifícios de construção recente, de onde destacamos o The Oculus – a estação central do WTC – uma obra do arquiteto espanhol Santiago Calatrava, autor do Museu do Amanhã, no Rio de Janeiro, e da Gare do Oriente, em Lisboa. The Oculus, tem o formato do esqueleto de um pássaro gigante, que nos impulsiona numa viagem ao futuro. É também um centro comercial – Westfield Mall – o maior da ilha de Manhattan.

Soon we reached the World Trade Center (WTC), a bright and dynamic building which was inaugurated in 2014 and has since become a city landmark. There are several recent buildings in this area, one highlight is The Oculus, the WTC’s central station, a work by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, author of the Museum of Tomorrow in Rio de Janeiro and the Gare do Oriente station in Lisbon. The Oculus, is shaped like the skeleton of a giant bird that propels us 63

on a journey into the future. It is also a shopping centre, the Westfield Mall, the largest on the Island of Manhattan.

As cidades cosmopolitas crescem e renovam-se constantemente, os bairros ganham novas vidas e as zonas que, em tempos foram grandes palcos industriais, são hoje cenários renovados pela criatividade. Brooklyn é o exemplo desta transformação.

Do hotel apanhamos o metro que nos leva até lá rapidamente.

Ao chegar encontramos

ruas amplas, revestidas de street art, edifícios industriais transformados em galerias, lojas, cafés e restaurantes. Paraísos de lojas vintage e lofts de habitação absolutamente incríveis. Escolher um restaurante não é tarefa fácil, todos são muitos convidativos e variados. Nós escolhemos o mexicano La Superior. Não podíamos ter escolhido melhor!

Também aqui vale a pena caminhar um pouco em direção ao rio para assistir à maravilhosa vista sobre Manhattan.

Cosmopolitan cities are constantly growing and renewing themselves, neighbourhoods are gaining new life and places that were once large industrial areas are now being creatively reinvented. Brooklyn is an example of this transformation.

From the hotel we take the subway

that gets us there in no time.

Upon arrival, we find wide streets lined with street art, industrial buildings transformed into galleries, shops, cafes and restaurants.

Vintage shop havens and absolutely incredible loft housing.

Choosing a restaurant is not an easy task, they are all so inviting and varied. We chose the Mexican, La Superior. We couldn't have made a better choice! It’s a place to return to! It’s also worth taking a stroll towards the river to see the spectacular view over Manhattan.

Como bons exploradores que já nos sentíamos, decidimos ir até ao novo bairro de West Side.

Passeámos por High Line, um parque suspenso com edifícios incríveis! Entrámos no centro comercial do condomínio Hudson Yards e encontrámos as melhores representações de “griffes” e lojas. Neste bairro está também representado o melhor da arte, manifestada em magníficos prédios com arquitetura ímpar.

Vessel é uma estrutura e ponto de referência que foi construída como parte integrante do Hudson Yards. Da autoria de Thomas Heatherwick, esta experiência interativa é digna de ser muito bem explorada.

Um batido do Shake Shack ou um wafel no The Rail Line Diner, fazem a delícia de qualquer fim de tarde solarengo ou chuvoso.

Entrar nos clássicos diner de Nova Iorque é uma experiência obrigatória, que nos faz sentir num cenário de um filme.

Obrigatório é também andar de metro para conhecer e sentir a cidade. Além de ser rápido é a melhor forma de ver as fascinantes personagens que só encontra em Nova Iorque. Toda a gente anda de metro e é uma experiência realmente divertida.

Like all good explorers, we ventured into the new Hudson Yards neighbourhood on the West side of the city. We strolled through High Line, a suspended park with incredible buildings! We went to the shopping centre and found the best collection of brands and stores. We also found incredible art in this neighbourhood, manifested in the magnificent buildings of unique architecture. Vessel is another landmark that was built as an integral part of Hudson Yards.

Designed by Thomas Heatherwick, this interactive experience is well worth exploring.

A shake at Shake Shack or a waffle at The Rail Line Diner, will add delight to any rainy or sunny afternoon. Walking into a classic New York diner is a must and makes us feel like we are on a film set. Taking the subway is the best way to get a feel for the city. It is quicker and is where you will spot the fascinating characters that are so unique to New York. Everyone takes the subway and we must say that it is an extremely amusing experience.

Cada minuto do nosso tempo era precioso. Depois de umas refrescantes margaritas orientámos o nosso rumo ao hotel. Aliviámos o peso dos sacos das compras e focámos todas as nossas atenções no jantar. Com a estação central mesmo ao lado do hotel, apanhámos o metro para o restaurante Indochine.

E, mais uma vez, ficámos

Every minute of our time was precious. After some refreshing margaritas we head back to the hotel. We drop off the heavy shopping bags and focus all our attention on dinner. With Central Station right next to the hotel, we take the subway to Indochine restaurant and once again, we are impressed by the station, which looks like a luxury shopping centre.

We stopped for some oysters at the Oyster Bar on our way to the train.

They were exquisite!

Ryan: Penso que na era da revolução digital que vivemos, uma das coisas que sou mais consciente, após 15 anos a viver nesta cidade, é que as pessoas se encontravam em espaços físicos. Era muito normal iniciar-se uma conversa com um estranho num café ou num bar, porque somos criaturas sociais. Hoje a tecnologia, a Internet e coisas como as apps de encontros, vieram transformar a forma como nos conhecemos e como nos relacionamos. Já não se fazem amigos de forma espontânea em locais físicos. Em vez disso, usam-se apps de encontros para estabelecer conexões e os relacionamentos não se fortalecem e por isso não crescem para níveis mais profundos. Quando estamos num local físico, percebes a vibração

das pessoas e a energia de cada uma. As coisas que nos dizem ressoam em nós e podem-nos levar à ação de diversas formas e isso é excitante. No digital não existe essa possibilidade de ter algumas conversas incríveis sobre política ou arte. Estas conversas eram realmente gotas de energia positiva que caíam dentro do teu copo e sinto que estamos a perder isso com a Internet.

Nesta cidade isso é muito visível, acho que enfatiza a solidão. Eram nos bares, cafés e festas especiais que podia encontrar pessoas com as quais se identificava e isso facilitava a conexão. O ser humano é um ser social, precisa desta conexão para se sentir completo.

Para além disso, quando conhecemos alguém pessoalmente podemos sentir se há conexão ou não com essa pessoa, algo que não se consegue perceber quando 80

estamos a conversar pela Internet.

Ryan: Na verdade, isso até pode funcionar contra nós. Podemos até nos sentir conectados com alguém, mas depois vem a foto, o perfil e os dados que não condizem.

Não ressoa. Podemos, muitas vezes, perder a oportunidade de estabelecer uma conexão mais profunda com alguém com quem até nos poderíamos identificar se estivéssemos num contexto presencial. Depois, há sempre aquele constrangimento de conhecer alguém através de uma app online.

Podemos até decidir ir tomar um café com essa pessoa, mas é muito diferente, corta a espontaneidade. É estar sentado num café à espera que alguém apareça. Estamos nervosos, a vibração não é a mesma que temos quando estamos num café onde, espontaneamente, as pessoas se encontram e começam a conversar. As expectativas de um

encontro marcado online são muito maiores. Surgem sempre questões antecipadamente. Será um bom ou mau encontro? Isto tira toda a naturalidade.

Este é um aspecto do qual podemos estar mais cientes agora: o supérfluo e o vazio que resultam da tecnologia.

David: Por outro lado, a ilha de Manhattan tornou-se muito cara nos últimos 20 anos. As pessoas andam demasiado ocupadas e preocupadas em saber como vão pagar as suas contas, a renda de casa ou como vão ganhar dinheiro.

Isso anula a iniciativa de dizer a alguém, “bora lá tomar um café ou uma bebida”. Até podemos nos cruzar na rua com alguém conhecido, mas como andamos tão ocupados mentalmente, tão absorvidos com estas prioridades, nem damos por isso e acabamos por, simplesmente, passar pelas pessoas. Isso suga-te toda a consciência, não estás consciente de nada, só ficamos focados em nós mesmos.

Ryan: É verdade, acho que os dois argumentos têm um denominador comum: a ausência de espontaneidade e entusiasmo. Por um lado, temos a correria dos nossos afazeres.

Encontramos alguém conhecido na rua, mas estamos tão atarefados que paramos, damos um abraço mas não conseguimos parar. Por outro lado, agora as nossas agendas são organizadas de acordo com os nossos constrangimentos financeiros e a forma de ganhar dinheiro, isso condiciona toda a tua vida a um único jantar ou saída à noite. Isso está definido, não há espontaneidade.

O que é que se faz para encontrar equilíbrio? Como é que os novaiorquinos lidam com o stress e com os problemas?

David: Eu acho que atualmente

equilíbrio é uma palavra muito subjetiva em Nova York, porque ela não é equilibrada! Encontrar equilíbrio pode ser sinónimo de arranjar alguns segundos na nossa vida para fazer algo que queremos, seja Ioga ou outra coisa qualquer, nem que seja apenas uma vez por semana. Como ator, consigo ter momentos que me permitem recarregar baterias. Mas, a maioria

e fazê-lo semanalmente. Costumo recomendar aos meus pacientes que procurem fazer o que amam e que se deixem guiar por essa motivação.

Não valorizamos suficientemente o prazer como o nosso guia intuitivo.

As pessoas sentem culpa por terem prazer. Acho que não nos divertimos o suficiente, não valorizamos devidamente a diversão é por isso que devemos deixar o prazer ser o

das pessoas não se pode dar a esse luxo. É só ir, ir, ir e ir! Não conseguem ter 15 minutos num dia ou 15 minutos a cada três dias. No entanto, acho que é importante aproveitar qualquer tempo que tenhamos para recarregar o máximo possível. Acho que estamos a aprender a recarregar muito rapidamente, é a natureza do ser humano.

Ryan: Eu concordo, acho que precisamos de encontrar formas de recarregar a nossa energia positiva, como aulas de ioga, olaria ou dança 81

nosso guia. Assim consegue fazer uma busca interna para descobrir o que está realmente a esgotarte. Existem diferentes tipos de energia e, se a energia física está em baixo, é importante avaliar a qualidade do sono, a qualidade da alimentação e a prática de exercício físico. Para algumas pessoas é a energia mental, o cérebro ou os seus pensamentos, não conseguem desligar-se, para estas pessoas eu recomendo exercícios respiratórios, meditação ou algum tipo de atividade

com presença corporal.

Para algumas pessoas, as suas reservas de energia emocional estão em baixo, porque não se protegem da energia tóxica dos relacionamentos, por exemplo, é preciso avaliar estes fatores e encontrar atividades alegres para manter intacta a sua energia emocional.

Depois temos a energia espiritual, e a forma como eu gosto de pensar sobre energia espiritual, é em termos um propósito.

Ou seja, estar conectado a algum propósito fora dos interesses pessoais, qualquer coisa que represente o conjunto de princípios que te guie. Muitas vezes é ao olhar para essas quatro diferentes áreas energéticas que podemos encontrar a resposta e a necessidade de reforçar apenas uma delas, aquela que poderá estar a drenar a pessoa.

Todas estão conectadas e quando uma falha pode comprometer as outras.

Acha que hoje há mais pessoas interessadas em acupuntura do que antes?

Ryan: Eu acho que é uma área que tem vindo a crescer, devido a uma crescente procura de alternativas terapêuticas dirigidas à mente, ao corpo e ao espírito. Os chineses criaram um método de diagnóstico brilhante, onde liam os sistemas do corpo à procura de sintomas

diferentes em cada um. Isso mostra onde é que a energia está bloqueada, onde é que está em défice e os médicos da China antiga usavam esta técnica para prevenir doenças e fortalecer o sistema imunitário. Eu acho que, agora mais do que nunca, é isso que as pessoas realmente precisam. É nesse sentido que estão a orientar a sua atenção.

Em que área terapêutica é especialista?

Ryan: Uma das minhas subespecialidades é o tratamento do cancro. O meu pai foi diagnosticado com cancro logo após eu me ter formado na escola de acupuntura.

Nessa altura e, sabendo que ele iria passar por um tratamento ocidental, passei muito tempo a ler sobre o que esperar e desenvolvi esta subespecialidade para ajudar pessoas submetidas à quimioterapia, radioterapia e cirurgia. É daí que vem a maior parte da investigação sobre a eficácia da acunpuntura. Grandes 82

hospitais especializados no tratamento de cancro nos Estados Unidos, tais como o MB Anderson e Memorial Stone Kettering, têm departamentos de medicina integrados onde é possível fazer pesquisas com amostras significativas de doentes, as quais mostram a eficácia da acupuntura na fadiga, na supressão imunológica, para criar imunidade, para dormir, para combater a insónia, a ansiedade e a depressão. Todos os resultados desta investigação e pesquisa sobre a eficácia da acupuntura, está a ser financiada e tem vindo a ser publicada desde os anos 90. Tive a oportunidade de trabalhar como acupunturista líder num centro oncológico, e isso permitiu-me observar todas as disfunções internas que a acupuntura poderá tratar.

WINK: On the theme of consciousness, can you tell us something you have become more conscious of now than you were before and how it has changed you?

Ryan: I think that in the age of the digital revolution, one of the things that I’m very conscious of, that I have noticed living here for almost 15 years, is that people used to connect in actual spaces. You would meet people at coffee shops and bars and it wasn’t strange to strike up a conversation with

a stranger in these places because that’s just what we did as social creatures. You can see how technology, the internet and things like dating apps have really transformed how we meet and how people gather together. We are no longer making random friends in physical locations. Now we’re using these dating apps to connect and relationships don’t really grow from that. When you’re in a physical place you get someone’s vibe, their energy. Maybe they say something funny and you get that there’s a resonance between you and that can go in many different directions, it was exciting. You don’t have the same possibility of having some really amazing conversation about politics or art. Those were really positive drops of energy that dripped into your positive energy jar and I feel that we’re missing that in the digital age and that really shows itself in this city, it emphasizes loneliness. It was at these bars, cafes and special parties that you could meet people like yourself and that would facilitate that connection. Humans are social creatures, they need that connection to feel whole.

Also, when you meet someone personally you can feel if there’s a connection or not but you never know when you’re talking to someone over the Internet.

Ryan: It actually may work against you, you might have had a connection with someone but their photo, profile and data doesn’t show who they really are, so they don’t resonate with you.

So you could miss a connection with someone who you would otherwise feel connected to. Then there’s the awkwardness of meeting someone on an online app. You may decide to go for

a coffee with someone you met online.

They arrive, sit down, you’re nervous, your vibe isn’t the same as if you were sitting in a coffee shop where a bunch of people meet and have conversations.

There are so many more expectations, is it going to be a good or a bad meeting? So, it’s not natural.

So that’s one aspect that you’re more aware of now, the superfluousness and emptiness that results from technology.

David: Another aspect of this is that the island of Manhattan has become so expensive in the past 20 years. People are extremely concerned about how they’re going to pay their rent and make money. So, once you take away someone’s ability to say “hey let’s go out for a drink” and they’re only conscious 83

about how they’re going to pay the rent, that cuts out a social element. You can be walking down the street and see someone that you know, but because you’re thinking about all the things you have to do, you just walk right past them. This sucks all the consciousness out of you, you’re not aware of anything, you’re just thinking about yourself.

Ryan: It’s true, I think that both the points we made have a common denominator, it’s absence of spontaneity and enthusiasm. You can walk into someone you know but you are both aware of what the other is going through so you just give them a quick hug and say you can’t stop. Now your schedule is all figured out to match how much money you can make and how to get things done and you’ve regulated your social life to that dinner, that night out. It’s in a box, there’s no spontaneity.

What do you do to find your balance? How do New Yorkers deal with stress and problems, what are they doing?

David: I think balance is a very subjective word in New York because it’s not balanced. It’s about finding the second that you do have, to do whatever it is, it may be yoga, even if it’s just once a week. Being an actor, I have moments when I can go and do what recharges me but most people don’t have that luxury, it’s just go, go, go, go and then you may have 15 minutes in a day or 15 minutes every three days. I think that the important thing is to take any time that you have to recharge as much as you can. I think we’re learning to recharge very quickly, it’s just the nature of the beast.

Ryan: I agree, I think you need to find a positive energy recharger, like yoga,

different areas, you may find that you really need to beef one of them up as it’s really draining you and they are all connected.

pottery or dance classes and do it weekly. I tell my patients to find the thing that they love and let that be their guide. We don’t put a high enough price on pleasure as our intuitive guide.

People feel guilty about pleasure. I don’t think we play enough, we don’t put a high enough price on fun and that’s why you should let pleasure be your guide. Then you can drill down and see where you’re burning out. There are different kinds of energy and if you can see that your physical energy is down you want to look at how you’re sleeping, what you’re eating or if you’re exercising. For some people, it’s mental energy, their brain and their thoughts are having a hard time shutting off and for them I recommend breathing exercises, meditation or some sort of body presence activity. For some people, their emotional energy reserves are down, they don’t have boundaries with toxic energy from relationships and they may need to evaluate some of these things and find joyous activities that will keep their emotional energy intact. Then there’s spiritual energy and the way I like to think about spiritual energy is in terms of purpose. So being connected to some purpose outside of your own self-interest, whatever it is that is a set of principles that guide you.

Do you think there are more people interested in acupuncture than they were before?

Ryan: I think it’s really growing, out of the demand for a form of medicine that addresses the mind, the body and the spirit.

The Chinese came up with a brilliant diagnostic method where they read the systems of the body for different symptoms that are coming out of each of the systems. This will show you where energy is blocked, where energy is deficient and doctors of ancient China used to do this to prevent illness, to soup up people’s engines. And I think now, more than ever, this is what people really need and are gravitating towards.

What area of medicine do you specialize in?

Ryan: One of my specialties is cancer care. My father was diagnosed with cancer just after I graduated from acupuncture school so as I knew he was going to go through certain western treatment, so I spent a long time reading about what to expect and I developed a sub-speciality to help people undergoing chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. That’s where most acupuncture efficacy research comes from. Large US cancer hospitals such as MB Anderson and Memorial Stone Kettering have built-in integrated medicine departments and they are able to do research with large enough sample sizes to show the efficacy of acupuncture for fatigue, immune suppression, to build immunity, for sleep, insomnia, anxiety, depression and all of this efficacy research is being funded and has been coming out since the late 90s. I had a position of lead acupuncturist at the cancer centre where I would see all the internal disfunctions that acupuncture could treat. 

Consciência Consciousness Luis Portela Consciência pode ser definida como a totalidade experiencial da vida psíquica momentânea, no fluir contínuo desta (Tart, 2009), que se manifesta pelas capacidades de captar, ordenar, integrar e responder a estímulos internos e externos; a noção mais ou menos clara que temos dos fenómenos psicológicos que se operam em nós e a faculdade de percebermos e julgarmos as nossas atitudes. É uma realidade permanente, abrangendo todos os fenómenos passados e presentes, pela qual uma multiplicidade de estados são reduzidos a um só eu. Uns entendemna capaz de animar apenas um corpo físico, outros admitem-na a animar sucessivamente diferentes formas materiais (Braude, 2003; Damásio, 2010; Koch, 2012; Radin, 1997).

Alguns sonhos e fantasias, em geral pouco valorizados, podem constituir afinal verdadeiras recordações de um passado aparentemente desconhecido, o que levou diversos autores a

considerarem a possibilidade de obtenção de níveis mais fortemente conscientes, em situações antes consideradas de privação de consciência. A recordação de supostas vidas passadas, espontânea ou induzida por método científico, veio reforçar essa possibilidade, sobretudo quando alguns investigadores – como Ian Stevenson (1987, 1997, 2003) e Erlendur Haraldsson (2003) – foram encontrando registos históricos de factos narrados por crianças que não podiam conhecer ao pormenor o acontecido noutras épocas e em lugares completamente desconhecidos para si e seus familiares.

Alguns autores foram admitindo diferentes dimensões de consciência e outros chegaram a falar em dupla consciência: uma abarcaria apenas os dados memorizáveis a nível cerebral; a segunda, que permaneceria para lá da morte física, assumiria a dimensão universal, eventualmente limitada pelo nível evolutivo próprio. A diferença entre as duas resultaria da desmemorização verificada por altura do nascimento, esquecendo a experiência passada e atuando de acordo com as limitações físicas.

Os casos dos meninosprodígio são, nesta perspetiva, explicados como seres em que essa desmemorização não foi totalmente feita, mantendo capacidades adquiridas anteriormente. O mesmo acontece com as crianças que evocam supostas vidas passadas e com os adultos que relatam fenómenos de déjà vu, ou seja, que atestam conhecerem, com grande riqueza de pormenor e habilidade performativa, locais, situações ou línguas nunca contactados na sua vida física atual.

Não se tratará então de uma dupla consciência, mas de uma única consciência, limitada, desde o início da experiência terrena, às capacidades do organismo físico utilizado. Como quando os cavaleiros medievais envergavam as suas armaduras e os seus elmos, ficando com uma capacidade limitada, por poderem visualizar apenas o que estava à sua frente e terem grandes dificuldades de mobilidade.

A consciência plena será assumida fora do contacto com o corpo físico, quer por morte, quer por afastamento durante o sono. Neste caso, não existirá posteriormente grande recordação dos factos por o cérebro não receber impressões a seu respeito. E essa consciência plena – apesar de contestada ou não aceite por muitos – é a de reconhecimento do eu como partícula do Todo, ao qual se sente indissoluvelmente ligado, numa relativização dos acontecimentos terrenos, perante a aspiração incontida de infinito: de Harmonia, de Sabedoria e de Amor.

Os estados alterados de consciência são transitórios e reversíveis, podendo ser espontâneos ou induzidos por privação sensorial em sentido lato (como na meditação ou na hipnose), por sobrecarga de estímulos ou por substâncias alucinogénias. Em alguns casos, podem mesmo ser desencadeados apenas por intervenção da própria vontade. São pessoais e, por isso, subjetivos.

Os conhecimentos de um estado de consciência parecem ser específicos desse estado e podem questionar os paradigmas vigentes da lógica, como o tempo e o espaço, e da consciência do próprio eu. Entre as vivências intensas, por vezes referidas nestes 89

estados, está o sentimento de ser uno com o Universo, a experiência de contacto com seres fisicamente mortos e a impressão de se compreender tudo de um modo não verbal. Mas também têm sido referidas experiências de perceção extrassensorial, experiências fora do corpo físico e experiências de sequências dramáticas que parecem ocorrer num contexto temporal diferente e compatível com supostas vidas passadas.

Os estados alterados de consciência podem ser considerados patológicos quando ocorrem sem ser desejados, assumindo uma forma vivencial dominante e provocando situações

Harmonia, de Sabedoria e de Amor. inadequadas à vida quotidiana.

Mas a grande maioria destes estados não deve ser considerada como sintoma de doença, podendo mesmo contribuir para um melhor conhecimento da realidade.

Quando se torna necessária uma intervenção terapêutica, vários autores aconselham a não intervenção nos conteúdos, dando liberdade à imaginação do paciente e orientando-o no sentido da observação desapaixonada das sensações e perceções, sem que o eu se identifique com elas, antes se mantendo um observador imparcial. Esse distanciamento parece permitir um enriquecedor esclarecimento das situações e da sua compatibilidade harmoniosa com a realidade envolvente.

O enriquecimento individual possível nos estados alterados de consciência é utilizado em algumas abordagens terapêuticas, desde a hipnose e as terapias pelo relaxamento até à terapia de regressão a vivências passadas, independentemente de as descrições serem consideradas apenas como fruto da imaginação, ou dramatizações de material inconsciente, ou mesmo revivências de factos eventualmente ocorridos no passado.

Max Planck (1931), que foi Nobel da Física e é considerado o pai da física quântica, afirmou “Considero a consciência fundamental; considero a matéria derivada da consciência.” Charles T. Tart (2009), um dos fundadores da psicologia transpessoal, afirma: “Não creio na sobrevivência depois da morte: sei que isso é verdade, porque o compreendi, porque experimentei estar vivo sem que o meu corpo físico interviesse.”

Como aconteceu historicamente noutras áreas, também no que respeita à consciência, os preconceitos e tabus existentes deverão desvanecer-se para dar lugar ao estudo aprofundado de toda a fenomenologia descrita.

Só assim será possível separar o trigo do joio, identificando o que é demonstrado como verdade e deixando cair as fantasias que têm ocupado muitas mentes e, provavelmente, perturbado a normal trajetória evolutiva da Humanidade. Parece, assim, justificar-se um grande esforço da ciência pelo total esclarecimento da consciência.

Consciousness can be defined as the experiential totality of momentary psychic life, in its continuous flow (Tart, 2009), which is manifested by the capacity to capture, order,

integrate and respond to internal and external stimuli; the more or less clear notion that we have of the psychological phenomena that operate within us and the faculty of perceiving and judging our attitudes. It is a permanent reality, encompassing all past and present phenomena, by which a multiplicity of states are reduced to one’s self. It is the ultimate example of personal unity and identity.

It is commonly admitted that consciousness is not located in a specific area of the brain, but its functions activate certain preferential areas of the brain, also giving rise to the participation of associative areas, which has been studied in the field

Harmony, of Wisdom and Love. of neuroscience. With the support of functional magnetic resonance imaging and PET-scan, the brain areas related to the sense organs, the state of the different areas of our body and our reasoning, highlighted or not by emotions, have been mapped.

Consciousness acts as an organizing principle of subjective experience, which provides sense and meaning to a set of behavioural phenomena, controlling the neurophysiological processes that occur in the brain, in the nervous system in general and in the overall physical body. It seems stable, active, differentiated, independent and vital (Eckartshausen, 2003). Some consider it the true self, others give it different names, such as soul, spirit, etc. Some see it as immortal, others 90

as limited to physical life. Some believe it is capable of animating just a physical body, others, that it successively animates different material forms (Braude, 2003; Damásio, 2010; Koch, 2012; Radin, 1997).

Some dreams and fantasies, which in general are considered of little value, may after all be real memories of an apparently unknown past, which has led several authors to consider the possibility of achieving higher levels of consciousness, in situations previously considered to be deprived of consciousness. Recalling supposed past lives, spontaneously or induced by scientific methods, reinforced this possibility, especially when some researchers, such as Ian Stevenson (1987, 1997, 2003) and Erlendur Haraldsson (2003), found historical records of facts narrated by children who could not possibly have known in detail what had happened in past times and in places which were completely unknown to themselves and their families.

Some authors have admitted that there are different dimensions of consciousness and others have even spoken of double consciousness: one would include only memorable data at a brain level; the second, which would remain beyond physical death, would take on a universal dimension, possibly limited by one’s own evolutionary level. The difference between the two would result from the failure to remember, what is verified at the time of birth, forgetting the past experience and acting according to physical limitations.

Cases of child prodigies are, from this perspective, explained as beings in which this failure to remember was not entirely achieved, maintaining previously acquired capacities. The same is true of children who evoke supposed past lives and adults who report déjà vu phenomena, that

is, who attest to know, with great richness of detail and performative ability, places, situations or languages that they have never been in contact with in their current physical life.

It is therefore not double consciousness, but a single consciousness, limited, since the beginning of earthly experience, to the capabilities of the physical organism used. Like medieval knights who wore armour and helmets that limited their capabilities, as they could only see what was in front of them and had great mobility difficulties.

Full consciousness will manifest itself when out of contact with the physical body, either due to death or by withdrawal during sleep. In this case, there will be no great recall of the facts afterwards because the brain does not receive impressions of it. This full consciousness – although contested or not accepted by many – is recognizing the self as a particle of the Whole, to which it feels inextricably linked, in a relativizing of earthly events, in the face of the absolute aspiration of the infinite: of Harmony, of Wisdom and Love.

Altered states of consciousness are transient and reversible and may be spontaneous or induced by sensory deprivation in a latent sense (as in meditation or hypnosis), by stimulus overload or by hallucinogenic substances. In some cases, they can even be triggered by the intervention of one's own will. They are personal and therefore, subjective.

Information obtained from of a state of consciousness seems to be specific to that state and may question the current paradigms of logic, such as time and space, and of consciousness of the self.

Among the intense experiences, sometimes referred to in these states, is the feeling of being at one with the Universe, the experience

of contacting with physically dead beings and the impression of understanding everything in a nonverbal way. However, experiences of extrasensory perception, out-ofbody experiences and experiences of dramatic sequences that seem to occur in a different temporal context that is compatible with supposed past lives, have also been reported.

Altered states of consciousness can be considered pathological when they occur without being desired, assuming a dominant experiential form and causing situations that are inappropriate in daily life. Nevertheless, the vast majority of these states should not be considered as a symptom of disease, and they may even contribute to a better understanding of reality.

When therapeutic intervention becomes necessary, several authors recommend not intervening in the contents, giving freedom to patients’ imagination and guiding them towards the dispassionate observation of sensations and perceptions, without identifying themselves with them, but rather remaining as an impartial observer.

This distancing appears to allow for an enriching clarification of situations and their harmonious compatibility with the surrounding reality.

Individual enrichment in altered states of consciousness is used in some therapeutic approaches, from hypnosis and relaxation therapies, to past lives regression therapy, regardless of whether the descriptions are only considered the result of imagination, dramatizations of unconscious material, or even reliving facts that may have occurred in the past.

Max Planck (1931), who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics and is considered the father of quantum physics, stated “I regard consciousness as fundamental; 91

I regard matter as derivative from consciousness.” Charles T. Tart (2009), one of the founders of transpersonal psychology, says: "I no longer believe in survival after death – I know my consciousness will survive death because I have experienced my consciousness existing outside of my physical body.”

Similar to what has historically been done in other areas and with regard to consciousness, existing prejudices and taboos should disappear to give way to an in-depth study of all this phenomenology. Only then will it be possible to separate the wheat from the chaff, identifying what has shown to be true and letting go of the fantasies that have occupied many minds, probably disturbing the normal evolutionary trajectory of Humanity. Ao dar uma palestra, estou constantemente a apontar, a definir as coisas como elas são; a experiencia existencial de sentar, respirar, sentir, de estar nesta forma sensível.

Eu tenho estado num corpo humano, eu tenho estado consciente. Assim não estou a dizer-vos o que deviam pensar sobre isto, mas a indicar e a encorajar para o despertar e a observar para serem mais conscientes. Isto é consciência, acordar para a realidade deste momento, assim tal como é, que inclui felicidade, sofrimento ou o que quer que seja que estejam a experienciar agora mesmo.

Ou seja, toda esta forma de ensinar, de falar, não é para acreditarem. Eu não estou a pedir para acreditarem no que digo, mas sim para observarem as condições- a maneira como é-conscientemente experimentando dentro da vossa forma humana, dentro da maneira como a vossa mente trabalha, das emoções que estão a ter, das energias, das experiencias energéticas, e que podem estar a experienciar agora. E não é ajuizar se é bom ou mau, mas ser o que é, deste modo, este ser o que é, assim tal e qual como é.

O Buddha, depois da sua iluminação, sempre se referiu a si próprio como o “Tathagata”; esta palavra “tatha” em Pali significa “a integridade do que é” ou “aquilo tal qual é”, o “como é”.

Ele não se referiu a Si, dizendo: “Eu costumava ser o Principe Siddhartha e o meu pai era um rei, a minha mãe uma rainha.

Frequentei as melhores escolas, casei, tive um filho e depois deixei-os, quando optei por ser asceta por seis anos, onde me vi

na futilidade de me maltratar e, quando me sentei debaixo de uma arvore, tornei-me iluminado”.

Aquilo que é o agora, “Tathagata” é “assim se torna Um que é o agora”, é como uma referencia, aquilo que é presente. Não é o Príncipe Siddhartha, não é o asceta Gautama, nem é sequer o Buddha, no sentido de dizer “Eu sou o Buddha” num acto de proclamar-se Ele próprio a esse nível. Ora, tomemos aqui atenção à erudição da palavra. “Tathagata” tornou-se frequentemente em varias tradições budistas, uma espécie de titulo superlativo, quando na realidade significa, “Aquilo que é precisamente agora”. Então, este “Tathagata” ou qualquer coisa com esse prefixo, é traduzido como “A qualidade tal daquilo que é agora”. Não é uma pessoa, não é alguém com uma historia, um passado, com uma autobiografia, credenciais, status, sucesso ou seja o que for, mas que é aquilo que é “agora”. Tal e qual como é. Ter consciência de si, tal e qual como é, agora, em cada momento.

When I’m giving a lecture, I constantly point out and define things as they are; the existential experience of sitting, breathing, feeling, of being in this sensitive form. I have been in a human body, I have been conscious. So, I’m not telling you what you should think about this, but rather, I am indicating and encouraging awakening and observation so that you can become more aware. This is consciousness, waking up to the reality of this moment, just as it is, which includes happiness, suffering or whatever it is you are experiencing right now.

In other words, the way I teach and speak, is not to make you believe. I am not asking you to 93

believe what I say, but to observe the conditions – the way it is – consciously experiencing within your human form and within the way the mind works, the emotions that you are having, the energies and energetic experiences that you may be experiencing now. It is not about judging whether it is good or bad, but about being what it is, thus being what it is, exactly as it is.

After his enlightenment, the Buddha always referred to himself as “Tathagata”. The word “tatha” in Pali means “the integrity of what is” or “that it is” or “how it is”. He did not refer to himself saying: “I used to be Prince Siddhartha, my father was a king and my mother, a queen.

I attended the best schools, got married, had a son and then left them, when I chose to be an ascetic for six years, when I found myself in the futility of mistreating myself and, when I sat under a tree, I became enlightened.

That which is the here and now, “Tathagata”, means "thus becomes one, which is the here and now”, it is like a reference, that which is present. He is not Prince Siddhartha, he is not the ascetic Gautama, nor is he even the Buddha, in the sense that he does not say “I am the Buddha” proclaiming himself at that level. Now, let’s pay attention to the erudition of the word. "Tathagata" often became, in various Buddhist traditions, a kind of superlative title, when what it really means is, "what it is right now". So, "Tathagata" or anything with that prefix, is translated as "of such quality, of what is now". It is not a person, it is not someone with a history, a past, an autobiography, credentials, status, success or whatever, but precisely what it is "now". Just as it is.

Being aware of what you are, just as you are now, in each moment. 

O Universo é um vasto aglomerado de estados de consciência. Espírito e Consciência são sinónimos.

A Consciência traduz-se por actividade inteligente, amor, compreensão e vontade.

A Consciência define-se como a faculdade de captar; diz respeito, principalmente, à relação que discernimos entre o Eu e o não-Eu, ou o que se conhece e quem o conhece, o pensamento e quem emite o pensar, sendo esta captação mental que define a diferença. Na realidade, esta é a discriminação que nos esclarece sobre a dualidade desse Eu. Sem esta dualidade não perceberíamos a existência da Consciência. O pensamento já é um produto da Consciência.

Ser consciente é ser desperto, atento, portanto, é dizer Eu Sou, eu existo. De facto, a

célebre frase de Descartes é uma máxima da realidade da consciência – “Eu penso, logo existo”. A Consciência é, acima de tudo, o produto da Unidade, ou Consciência Cósmica e, quando o Espírito se individualiza, toma posse da matéria ou corpo físico, criando esta ponte (a Consciência) para seu uso, pois Ele é inteligência activa.

Assim, a individualização humana começa pela compreensão consciente por parte do Eu, e na relação com o todo. Em cada grau do despertar da Consciência, segue-se um período de gradual desenvolvimento até a um momento instantâneo de autorrealização, o qual será seguido novamente de evolução gradual, após a culminação do que se aprendeu em certo período de tempo. Este momento de apreensão do que já foi vivido, 95

portanto, realizado ao nível humano e espiritual, constitui uma absorção mental iniciática, onde se dá conta do que já evoluiu, quanto à sua expansão de Consciência. É um momento gratificante de autorrealização e compreensão do Divino pela experiência mística, que surge espontaneamente. É o culminar de um esforço no caminho da evolução da Consciência.

Deste modo, desde o Espírito são criados certos patamares mentais com os corpos etéricos que vão, gradualmente, descendo até ao corpo físico, coordenados pelo próprio Espírito, dispensando por etapas a inteligência-consciência.

Esta “descida” do Espírito através dos corpos subtis ou planos de consciência, estabelece a sua vontade expressando-se como Consciência.

Ser consiste em realizar e levar adiante um propósito definido – é por esse propósito que se deve desenvolver uma forma adequada física, mental e psíquica para uso do Espírito – isto uma vez compreendido, dá-nos a razão ou a necessidade de levar uma vida digna e responsável, num objectivo que merece o melhor dos nossos esforços. E este esforço na busca por uma vida mais pura em ideais elevados, marca a diferença dos níveis de Consciência entre os seres. Por conseguinte, pelo reconhecimento dos próprios interesses, gradualmente, conduz também ao reconhecimento dos outros, num trabalho mais consciente para o bem do grupo ou ordem social da qual faz parte; assim, o bem aos outros surge a partir do seu próprio bem.

Há centros do corpo humano, principalmente o cérebro que evolui, geralmente por um desenvolvimento lento e normal, mas por outro, ocorre no período em que o Ser já possui aspirações espirituais e, de forma consciente aplica a sua vontade na própria evolução, dando assim, um carácter construtivo à sua vida. Uma das forças para o homem/mulher desenvolver é o poder mental equilibrado na busca da autorrealização, ou ligação à Unidade. Nesta sintonia desenvolve maior sensibilidade, harmonizado numa vibração mais elevada, mais refinada e a um ritmo diferente, regido mais pelo aspecto da vontade e, não tanto pelas emoções e desejos.

Desta forma, para elevar a mente

aos planos superiores ou morada do Espírito, será requerida a autodisciplina, controlo mental e refinamento dos corpos físicos e subtis, podendo então resultar em maior irradiação do coração, portanto, à abertura do amor incondicional. É desta forma que se completa o aperfeiçoamento da vida ou da personalidade, que então, conduz às portas de iniciações maiores, sinal de que se realizou o trabalho, marcando um fim de um ciclo menor, para

Ser cada vez mais consciente é o propósito de vida de cada Ser começo e transferência de outro, numa espiral mais elevada.

Ser cada vez mais consciente é o propósito de vida de cada Ser, com infinitas graduações e atitudes para se integrar, inteligentemente, numa Consciência Universal, rumo à Cósmica, numa escalada independente e pessoal, pois só assim, se tornará responsável pelas suas acções e pensamentos.

The Universe is a vast cluster of states of consciousness. Spirit and consciousness are synonymous.

Consciousness is intelligent activity, love, understanding and will.

Consciousness is defined as the ability to capture; it deals mainly with the relationship that we 96

discern between the self and the non-self, or what is known and who knows it, thought and who emits thinking, it is this mental capture that defines the difference. In reality, it is this discrimination that enlightens us on the duality of that self. Without this duality we would not be aware of the existence of consciousness. Thought itself is a product of consciousness.

To be conscious is to be awake, attentive and therefore, it is to say “I am, I exist”. In fact, Descartes' famous phrase is a maxim of the reality of consciousness – “I think, therefore I am”. Above all, consciousness is the product of unity or cosmic consciousness, and when the spirit becomes individuated, it takes possession of matter or a physical body, creating this bridge (consciousness) for its use, because It is active intelligence.

Thus, human individuation begins with a conscious understanding of the self and the whole. With each step in the awakening of consciousness, there follows a period of gradual development until a sudden moment of selfrealization, which will be followed again by gradual evolution, after the culmination of what has been learned over a certain period of time. This moment of apprehension regarding what has already been lived, therefore, carried out at a human and spiritual level, constitutes initial mental absorption, where one realizes how one has already evolved, in the expansion of one’s consciousness. It is a gratifying moment of self-realization and understanding of the Divine

through mystical experience, which arises spontaneously. It is the culmination of the work towards the evolution of consciousness.

This way, from the spirit, certain mental levels are created with etheric bodies that gradually descend to the physical body, coordinated by the spirit itself, dispensing intelligenceconsciousness in stages. This “descent” of the spirit through the subtle bodies or levels of consciousness, establishes

The life objective of beings is to carry out and fulfill a defined purpose. It is for this purpose that an adequate physical, mental and psychic form must be developed for use by the Spirit . Once this is understood, it gives us a reason or need to lead a dignified and responsible life, an objective that deserves our best efforts. This effort in search for a purer life of high ideals, marks the difference in the levels of consciousness of beings.

Consequently, the recognition of one’s own interests, will gradually lead to the recognition of others, in a more conscious work for the benefit of the group or social order of which one is a part. Thus, doing

good for others arises out of your own good.

There are centres of the human body that evolve, mainly the brain that does so usually due to slow and normal development, but on the other hand, it also occurs when the being already has spiritual aspirations and consciously applies their will in their own evolution, thus making their life more constructive. One of the strengths to be developed is balanced mental power in search of self-realization, or connection to unity. With this harmony, one develops greater sensitivity, harmonized in a higher, more refined vibration and at a different pace, governed more by will than by emotions and desires.

Thus, in order to elevate the mind to higher planes or the abode of the spirit, self-discipline, mental control and refinement of the physical 97

and subtle bodies will be required, which may then result in greater irradiation of the heart, therefore, to the opening up of unconditional love. This way, the improvement of life or personality is completed, which then leads to the doors to greater initiations, a sign that the work has been done, marking the end of a smaller cycle, and the beginning and transfer to another, on a more elevated spiral.

To become more and more conscious is the life purpose of beings, with infinite degrees and attitudes to integrate, intelligently, in a universal consciousness, towards the cosmic, in an independent and personal quest, because only then, will one become responsible for one's thoughts and actions. 

Em janeiro de 2020, o “Relógio do Apocalipse" indicava que o fim do mundo estava cada vez mais próximo. Restavam apenas 100 segundos de vida à humanidade.

Tudo por causa das alterações climáticas e do risco nuclear, defendem os cientistas do Bulletin of The Atomic Scientists, um painel que integra 14 prémios Nobel.

O Relógio do Apocalipse simboliza a vida útil na Terra e, a cada ano, o prestigiado grupo de cientistas atómicos, que criou este relógio em 1947, prevê que horas são para a humanidade e quanto tempo falta para a meia-noite, metáfora para o final do mundo.

A notícia passou despercebida para a maioria das pessoas, mas quem acompanha o tema, ao ver a pandemia do Covid-19 alastrarse furiosamente pelo mundo,

inevitavelmente questionou-se: terá a humanidade esgotado o seu tempo? Será este vírus um alerta para a forma como a humanidade se relaciona com o planeta?

Estaremos numa via sem retorno?

Estarão as doze badaladas a começar a tocar e recusamo-nos a ouvir?

A verdade é que, sem aviso prévio, o mundo parou de uma forma sem precedentes. Os países foram obrigados a decretar estados de emergência e a fechar fronteiras, numa tentativa de controlar o avanço do vírus. Em março foi a vez de Portugal decretar o estado de emergência, dando origem a um ambiente de medo e ansiedade, como nunca havíamos sentido.

As ruas encheram-se de um vazio palpável. O céu despiu-se de aviões e o silêncio da cidade tornou100

se ensurdecedor. Os humanos quase desapareceram de cena.

As atrações turísticas deixaram de o ser… os miradouros passaram a ser dos animais e as estradas das viaturas de emergência, dos desportistas, que se recusavam ao confinamento total, e dos donos de cães, que os passearam como nunca. Lisboa, habituada às enchentes, viu-se de repente vazia e abandonada.

A sociedade moderna, aparentemente inabalável, de repente revelou toda a sua fragilidade perante uma ameaça invisível e estremeceu. Não foi preciso uma bomba nuclear, um grande sismo, um tsunami ou tempestades bíblicas. Um vírus apenas bastou para travar o mundo e deixar um rasto de destruição, que ainda está longe de ser

A new Awareness Uma nova Consciência calculado. Inúmeras empresas faliram, o desemprego aumentou, famílias não resistiram ao embate e desfizeram-se. Uma verdadeira tragédia fez-nos acordar e repensar tudo o que dávamos por adquirido.

Contudo, no meio do caos, depressa vimos surgir ações de solidariedade como nunca, um sentimento de partilha e interajuda entre os homens, vimos pássaros e animais acercaram-se da cidade, lembrando que há mais vida para além da nossa. Entre as pedras da calçada surgiu vida num claro sinal de esperança. As redes sociais, que acusávamos de nos distanciarem, durante os meses de confinamento transformaram-se em boia de salvação para nos mantermos em contato e atenuarem os efeitos da solidão e do medo. É verdade que a quantidade de informação disponível, entre teorias da conspiração, teorias esotéricas, factos e notícias falsas, ou não, deixou bem clara a desinformação reinante e, logo, a necessidade de

filtrar a informação.

Confinados, semana após semana, não nos restou outra saída senão o mais importante dos encontros, com a nossa essência. Repensaram-se valores, reflectiram-se opções e descobriram-se paixões, revelaramse chefes de cozinha, agricultores, jardineiros, artesãos. Confirmouse que é possível reinventar os antigos modelos de gestão e redefinir métodos de trabalho que promovam maior compatibilidade entre a vida profissional e a vida familiar. Muitos pais, ao serem obrigados a participarem ativamente na educação escolar dos filhos, deram por si a valorizar o papel e a paciência dos professores. As equipas médicas, incansáveis, tornaram-se em heróis, que recebiam salvas de palmas de cidades inteiras.

Uma explosão da partilha de conhecimento, como nunca vimos, trouxe até nós inúmeros métodos de meditação e formas de crescimento espiritual e bem-estar 101

físico. As ondas de solidariedade, para atenuar a tragédia dos mais vulneráveis multiplicaramse um pouco por todo o lado, relembrando que a união faz a força. Um virus acordou-nos da dormência em que vivíamos e fez-nos ver que no fundo, classes sociais à parte, a fragilidade da vida humana é transversal a todos e que, na realidade, somos todos um.

O mais certo é que, quando tudo isto passar, muitos de nós voltemos ao passado e que seja nula qualquer transformação na forma de viver a vida. Outros haverá que, dado o crescimento pessoal e a tomada de uma nova consciência serão finalmente pessoas novas num mundo que, na realidade, sempre esteve em mudança.

In January 2020, the Doomsday Clock indicated that the end of the world was closer than ever. Humanity was left with just 100 seconds of life. All of this due to climate change and nuclear threats, argue scientists of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, a panel consisting of 14 Nobel Prize winners.

The Doomsday Clock symbolizes life on Earth and every year, a prestigious group of atomic scientists, who created this clock in 1947, predicts what time it is for humanity and how much time is left before midnight, a metaphor for the end of the world.

The news went by unnoticed for most people, but for those who did follow it, seeing the Covid-19 pandemic spread furiously across the world, inevitably asked themselves: has humanity run out of time? Is this virus a warning to humanity on the way we treat our planet? Have we reached a point of no return? Is the clock about to strike twelve and we are refusing to hear the chimes?

SPOTLIGHT

The truth is that without any prior warning, the world came to an unprecedented halt. Countries were forced to enforce states of emergency and borders in an attempt to contain the spread of the virus.

In March, it was Portugal's turn to declare a state of emergency, creating an environment of fear and anxiety, unlike anything we had never felt before. The streets were filled with a palpable void.

The sky was stripped of planes and the city's silence became deafening. Humans practically disappeared from the scene. Tourist attractions were empty, lookout points became hang-outs for stray animals, roads were only to be used by emergency vehicles and sportsmen and women who refused to be completely confined, and dog owners, who took their pets out for endless walks.

Lisbon, which had grown used to the floods of tourists, suddenly found itself empty and abandoned.

The apparently unshakable modern world, suddenly revealed its fragility in face of an invisible threat and it shuddered. There was no need for a nuclear bomb, a major earthquake, a tsunami or biblical storms. A virus was enough to stop the world and leave a trail of destruction, with an impact which is still far from being measured. Countless companies went bankrupt, unemployment increased and families that were unable to bear the struggle, broke up. A tragedy that made us wake up and rethink everything we had always taken for granted.

However, in the midst of all the chaos, a spirit of solidarity arose like never before, a feeling of sharing and mutual help. We saw birds and animals approaching the city, reminding us that there is life other than our own. From between the cobblestones, came a glimmer

of hope. Social networks, which had previously been accused of distancing people, became a lifeline for staying in touch and mitigating the effects of loneliness and fear during the lockdown period. However, it is true to say that the amount and type of information available, including conspiracy theories, esoteric theories, facts and fake news, made 102

misinformation and the need to filter information, reign.

Confined, for weeks on end, we had no choice but to confront our essence. Values were questioned, options were reflected upon and passions were discovered. Chefs, farmers, gardeners and artisans were revealed. It was confirmed that it is possible to reinvent old management models and redefine working methods that promote a greater professional and family life balance. Many parents, when obliged to participate actively in their children's school education, started to value the role and patience of teachers.

The tireless medical teams became heroes, receiving rounds of applause from entire cities.

An unprecedented explosion of knowledge sharing has taught us countless ways to meditate and forms of spiritual growth and physical well-being. Waves of solidarity, to mitigate the tragedy of the most vulnerable, have multiplied a little everywhere, reminding us that strength is in unity.

A virus awakened us from the numbness in which we lived and made us realize that deep down, social classes aside, the fragility of human life is transversal to everyone and we are one.

One thing’s for sure, when this is all over, many will go back to living exactly as they did before.

Others, thankfully, will have gained consciousness of the need to adapt in a constantly changing world. ď ‘

Um dos setores mais afetados pela pandemia foi a hotelaria. Fronteiras fechadas aos estrangeiros, nacionais obrigados a ficar em casa. O mundo ficou em pausa.

Nos Hotéis, quartos, salas e corredores totalmente vazios…

Ainda assim, no mais profundo silêncio, muita coisa acontecia… remodelações, redefinição de estratégias, preparação do futuro e muita solidariedade aos inúmeros pedidos de ajuda que chegavam ao responsável pela área da sustentabilidade.

Falar de ação social e sustentabilidade é falar de responsabilidade e, embora dar um cariz promocional a estes princípios não seja uma premissa do Pestana Hotel Group, tivemos uma conversa muito reveladora com Luis Castanheira Lopes, presidente das Pousadas de Portugal, jurista e encarregado da implementação e coordenação de

muitas destas ações.

Não foi o contexto de pandemia que levou à adoção de uma política de responsabilidade social no grupo, muito pelo contrário, a pandemia veio apenas reforçar algumas das ações há muito implementadas e criar outras para fazer face aos efeitos colaterais mais imediatos da doença. Falar com Luís Castanheira Lopes, foi uma forma de as conhecer melhor e de ficarmos surpreendidos com o tanto que se tem feito. Tudo teve um início, exatamente onde o grupo também teve o seu início: na Ilha da Madeira. “Obrigado por ajudar” foi a primeira ação apoiada pelo grupo, que nasceu na Madeira para apoiar a associação “Criamar”, uma ação que foi crescendo a par do crescimento do grupo.

Da Madeira, cresceu para Lisboa, Porto e Manteigas, apoiando outras instituições, tais como a “Acreditar”, a “Crescer Ser” e a 105

“AFACIDASA”. Depois ganhou maior velocidade e dimensão e, hoje, o projeto “Obrigado por ajudar” atravessa fronteiras, tendo já chegado a Moçambique, Cabo Verde, África do Sul, Marrocos, Brasil e São Tomé, contribuindo com outras associações de cariz social nestes países. E a ação é muito simples, porque é na simplicidade que se encontram as melhores formas de contribuir!

No momento de check out, os hóspedes das unidades do grupo Pestana são convidados a doar 1€.

Simples, não é? Mas não fica por aqui, porque ao donativo efetuado, os hóspedes vêem somado mais 1€ doado pelo grupo. Ou seja, o Pestana Hotel Group duplica os donativos recebidos e com isso contribui para várias associações.

A somar a esta ação, o Pestana Hotel Group muito tem incentivado o voluntariado interno, envolvendo e apoiando os seus colaboradores

em inúmeras ações, desde doações em dinheiro, sempre duplicadas pelo grupo, a doações de outros bens que muito têm contribuído para alimentar pessoas, vestir crianças, tratar doenças, construir e reconstruir escolas e tantos outros.

Podemos dizer que ser socialmente responsável está no ADN do grupo e começa logo na sua preocupação ambiental. Se pensarmos um pouco, o grupo Pestana tem sido um forte impulsionador da recuperação de património, em Portugal e no mundo! Desde hospitais e palacetes a fábricas abandonadas, o grupo tem apostado na recuperação destes edifícios, transformando-os em unidades hoteleiras, dandolhes nova vida e nova dinâmica envolvente. Foi galardoado com o prémio “Chave Verde” e muito se

deve a este princípio. Não seria, portanto, de espantar que, num contexto de pandemia global como o que todos vivemos, o Pestana Hotel Group não explorasse todas as suas possibilidades de contribuição.

Desde logo, a disponibilização das suas unidades de forma segura, para alojamento de profissionais de saúde, pessoas em quarentena, doentes e voluntários no combate à pandemia, em articulação com os Ministérios do Trabalho e da Saúde, com a Segurança Social e a Câmara Municipal de Lisboa.

Para fazer frente ao crescente número de pedidos de ajuda, 150 refeições, confecionadas no Hotel Pestana Palace, eram diariamente distribuidas por associações que estavam no terreno. O Pestana Hotel Group conseguiu reunir também recursos e doou 20 106

ventiladores à Região Autónoma da Madeira.

Como Luís Castanheira Lopes defende, tudo isto só é possível quando se consegue reunir um grupo com um forte espírito humanitário.

Também ao nível interno, várias ações têm sido implementadas.

Uma delas é a atribuição antecipada dos subsídios de Natal.

Visto que é no início do ano escolar que as famílias mais precisam de dinheiro, os colaboradores, caso queiram, podem pedir a antecipação do subsídio.

Ainda, e para fazer face aos constrangimentos da pandemia, outro grande desafio foi o ensino à distância. Muitos dos colaboradores não tinham equipamento suficiente para todos os elementos da família. Também aqui, o Pestana Hotel Group não

deixou a situação ao acaso e providenciou computadores para os filhos dos seus colaboradores.

Estas são apenas algumas das inúmeras iniciativas do grupo e seus colaboradores, que ainda recentemente inauguraram uma creche que apoia mais de 100 crianças em São Tomé e Princípe.

The hospitality sector was one of the hardest-hit by the pandemic.

Borders were closed to foreigners and nationals were forced to stay at home. The world paused. Rooms, living rooms and corridors were totally empty... Yet, in deep silence, a lot was going on... Remodelling, redefining strategies, preparing for the future and doing a lot of solidarity work responding to the countless requests for help that the Group’s Head of Sustainability received.

Social work and sustainability are all about responsibility and although the Pestana Group does not tend to promote its activities in these areas, we managed to speak to Luís Castanheira Lopes, President of the Pousadas de Portugal, lawyer and the person responsible for the implementation and coordination of many of these activities.

It was not the pandemic that led the Group to adopt social responsibility policies, quite the contrary, the pandemic led us to reinforce some actions that we have had in place for a long time and to create new ones to respond to the most immediate collateral damage caused by the disease. Talking to Luís Castanheira Lopes was the best way to find out more and we were astonished by the amount of solidarity work that has been done. Everything started precisely where the Group had started: on Madeira Island. “Thanks

The best ways to contribute are often the simplest. for helping” was the first activity supported by the Group and was created in Madeira to help the Criamar Association, which has been growing along with the Group’s growth.

From Madeira, our solidarity action grew in Lisbon, Porto and Manteigas, supporting other NGOs such as “Acreditar”, “Crescer Ser” and “AFACIDASA”. It gained greater speed and dimension and now the "Thanks for helping" project has crossed borders, having reached Mozambique, Cape Verde, South Africa, Morocco, Brazil and S. Tomé, 108

donating to so many other NGOs in these countries . It’s very simple, because simple is best when it comes to donating. Guests who are checking out of Pestana hotels are invited to donate €1. Simple, isn't it? But there’s more, the Pestana Group matches these donations, doubling the amount available to be donated to various associations. In addition to this action, the Pestana Group has strongly encouraged corporate volunteering, with groups of employees partaking in numerous other social activities including the donation of essential goods that

have helped feed people, dress children, treat diseases, build and rebuild schools, among many other initiatives.

We could say that being socially responsible is in the Group’s DNA and all it begins with its environmental concerns. The Pestana group has been a strong driver of heritage recovery, in Portugal and worldwide, investing in the recovery of former hospitals, mansions and abandoned factories, transforming them into hotels, and giving them new life and engaging dynamics. The Group was awarded the “Green Key”, very much is due to this principle.

It is therefore not at all surprising that the Pestana Group explored all the ways it could possibly help during the pandemic. Right at the start, it made its hotels safe and available for the accommodation of health professionals, quarantined people, patients and volunteers in the fight against the pandemic, an initiative carried out together with the Ministry of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security, the Ministry of Health and Lisbon City Hall.

To cope with the growing number of requests for help, 150 meals were cooked at the Hotel Pestana Palace on a daily basis and distributed by associations working on the ground. The Pestana Hotel Group also managed to put together the resources to donate 20 ventilators to the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

According to Luís Castanheira Lopes, all of this is only possible when a group of people with strong humanitarian values, come together.

Several actions have also been implemented internally, such as the payment, in advance, of Christmas subsidies. Employees may now

request that the payment of this subsidy be made at the beginning of the school year, when families are most in need of money.

Also, one of the main restrictions and a major challenge during the pandemic, was home schooling and many employees did not have enough IT equipment at home for all the members of the family. Once again, the Pestana Group stepped 109

in to help, providing computers for employees’ children.

These are just a few examples of the countless solidarity activities carried out by the Group and its employees who very recently opened a nursery school for more than 100 children in São Tomé and Principe. 

Da Biologia Marinha e Engenharia do Ambiente até à Espiritualidade, Appamado Bhikkhu nasceu em Portugal e foi na cidade de Faro, onde estudou, que a sua investigação e abordagem espiritual ganhou cada vez mais sentido na sua vida e o levou a interessar-se por meditação e práticas espirituais Ocidentais e Orientais. Numa visita ao Mosteiro Budista Amaravati, em Inglaterra, decidiu ficar e fazer parte da equipa de apoio ao Retiro de Inverno de 2005. Regressou a Portugal, reorganizou-se e voltou.

Desta vez por mais tempo. Visitou o Mosteiro Budista Cittaviveka (Chithurst) e decidiu ordenarse como Anagarika. Mais tarde e com os benefícios da prática monástica comprovados, pediu o Pabbajja – ordenação como monge noviço. Ordenou-se como Bhikkhu em julho de 2009, sendo Luang Por Sumedho o seu preceptor.

Appamado reside habitualmente no Mosteiro Budista Sumedharama, perto da Ericeira, em Portugal.

Western and Eastern spiritual practices. On a visit to the Amaravati Buddhist Monastery in England, he decided to stay on and join the 2005 Winter Retreat support team. He returned to Portugal, reorganized his life and went back to England, this time he stayed for longer. He visited the Cittaviveka Buddhist Monastery (Chithurst) and decided to ordain himself as an Anagarika. Later, with the proven experience of monastic practice, he applied for the Pabbajja – ordination as a novice monk. He was ordained a Bhikkhu, a senior monk, in July 2009, with Luang Por Sumedho as his tutor. Appamado currently resides in the Sumedharama Buddhist Monastery near Ericeira, Portugal.

Não sei se os poderei chamar de destinos de férias, talvez a melhor designação seja a de destinos de peregrinação. Os Himalaias, a Índia e o Nepal.

Instalo-me, desfaço a minha bagagem e organizo as minhas coisas no quarto. E tomo um banho!

Tranquilidade e limpeza.

Summer trips to the Algarve and Spain. Crossing the border with my parents when I was about three years old.

When I was 18 years old in Portugal.

When I was 26, I went abroad to a Buddhist Monastery in England and I went by land and by sea, across Spain and France, on public transport, hitchhiking and walking.

What are your favourite holiday destinations?

I am not sure if I can call them holiday destinations, they're more like pilgrimage destinations, the Himalayas, India and Nepal.

Do you have any particular habits or rituals when you first get to a hotel room?

I settle in, unpack my luggage, organize my things in the room and take a shower!

When you travel, what is important for you when choosing your hotel or place to stay?

Being peaceful and clean.

Pilgrimage, visiting or staying at Monasteries.

It inspires me and opens my horizons.

Airplane, boat, rail and walking.

I try not to entertain myself with anything and to be present and aware of everything that is happening within and around me at every moment.

I walk in nature.

To the Himalayas. 
