Nesta 12.ª edição da WINK colocamos em destaque o recéminaugurado Pestana CR7 Lisboa na Baixa Pombalina, em pleno coração de Lisboa. É a segunda unidade desta parceria entre Cristiano Ronaldo e o Pestana Hotel Group, que, muito em breve, dará novos frutos. This 12th edition of WINK highlights the recently inaugurated Pestana CR7 Lisboa hotel in the Baixa Pombalina district - the heart of Lisbon. It is the second unit of the Cristiano Ronaldo/Pestana Hotel Group partnership, which will be expanding in the near future. For now, please accept our invitation to discover this modern space where the tailor-made technology promises to surprise and delight all its guests – especially fans of Ronaldo. We feature images from the night of the inauguration party, which was attended by Portugal’s great “ambassador”, Cristiano Ronaldo, and take a guided tour through some of the many surprises that make this a truly unique hotel. Equally unique is the magical destination we bring to you in this edition: the Azores. We revisit the archipelago in this issue to showcase São Miguel Island, a piece of land that looks like it was touched by the real Atlantis. What better way to get to explore the island than to follow the travel diary of a traveller charmed by this mysterious land. Between life stories and travel suggestions we also recommend that you begin a discovery of the Alentejo through two historic hotels. The first is the Pousada Convento de Arraiolos, in the village famous for its centuries-old tapestries, and the opportunity to find oneself in the deep stillness of nature. Further north, in the Alto Alentejo, we visit the former Monastery of Santa Maria da Flor de Rosa. Known today as the Monastery of Crato, this building, which is more than six centuries old, belonged to the Order of Malta, an order created in the 12th century to assist pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land. Quero apenas ficar trancado numa boa suite a um canto do hotel para que as pessoas pensem que sou uma pessoa pequena e estranha.

A primeira coisa que tenho de fazer quando saio do avião é saltar para a banheira, algo que realmente não consigo explicar.

Vou até a janela, espreito a vista, abro a janela e desligo o ar condicionado.

Ah, e procuro uma rede Wi-Fi.

Pulo em cima da cama, abro tudo, tento explorar o máximo possível.

Reorganizo a mobília e peço um balde de gelo.

The first thing I have to do when I get off the plane is get in a tub, which I don’t really understand, but I have to check out the hotel tub.

I go to the window, look at the view, open the window and turn off the air conditioning. Ah, and I look for a Wi-Fi network connection.

Pego em todos os sabonetes e cremes do hotel e guardo-os muito bem guardados no meu nécessaire…

Em 15 minutos consigo desarrumar tudo à minha volta e isso faz-me sentir em casa.

Levo sempre o meu sabonete! Detesto aqueles sabonetezinhos embrulhados em plástico.

Detesto desperdício!

Trago comigo tudo o que posso para não ter de usar nenhuma destas coisas descartáveis.

Retiro a colcha, que costuma estar em cima da cama, ponho a toalhinha no chão da casa de banho (gosto de andar descalça), fecho as cortinas e tento descansar antes de fazer o ensaio de som.

Tudo depende de como me sinto. Posso querer relaxar um pouco e habituar-me ao novo contexto, mas a maioria das vezes quero explorar, expecialmente se for um sítio onde nunca estive.

Penduro o sinal de “Do Not Disturb” na porta.

E vejo o que está dentro do mini bar…Trago sempre Nag Champa (o incenso), abro a janela, abençoo o quarto e digo: “Isto é um lugar de luz e amor”.

I just like to be tucked away in a very nice suite on the corner of the hotel so that people can think of me as a strange little person.

I take all the little hotel soaps and put them away carefully in my wash bag…

It takes me 15 minutes to mess everything up around me, which makes me feel at home.

I always take my own soap, I hate those little miniature things wrapped in plastic. I hate waste! I take as many things as I can myself so I don’t have to use any of those disposable ones.

I remove the bed cover that’s usually on the bed, I put the small towel on the bathroom floor (I like walking barefoot) and I close the curtains to try to get some rest before the sound check.

I jump on the bed, I open everything. I try to explore as much as possible.

It all depends on how I feel.

I may want to relax a bit and get used to my new surroundings, but most of the time I’ll want to explore, especially if it’s somewhere I’ve never been before.

Rearrange the furniture and call for a bucket of ice.

Hang up the “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door and see what’s in the mini fridge… I always bring Nag Champa [incense] with me, I open the windows and bless the room, saying: “This is a place of light and love”.

A WINK passou uma manhã encantadora no Pestana Palace com a divina Noelia Morales para conversar sobre Anna Bonny: a pioneira do “sutiã pirata”.

WINK spent a delightful morning with the divine Noelia Morales at the Pestana Palace to discuss Anna Bonny, the pioneer of the ‘pirate bra’.

Não é todos os dias que se tem a oportunidade de passar uma manhã inteira com a auto-proclamada pirata, numa esplendorosa e ensolarada sala de pequenos-almoços de um palácio. O sol do meio-dia entrava pelas janelas adentro, enquanto a última rodada de café era servida e os hóspedes do hotel se deixavam levar por mais um belo dia em Lisboa.

Tendo a sala toda para nós, e em tão boa companhia, era natural que me perdesse no meio da conversa.

Mas afinal o que é o “sutiã pirata”? É seguro dizer que tal coisa provavelmente não existiria se não fosse pela luta dolorosa contra o cancro da mama, que Morales teve de enfrentar há uns anos. Ela combateu não só a doença, mas também teve que batalhar para encontrar um médico que compreendesse o seu desejo, pouco convencional, de prescindir da reconstrução pós-mastectomia, já para não falar dos comentários perplexos dos seus amigos e família que, ao início, ficaram confusos com a sua decisão.

t’s not every day that you get to spend the morning with a self-proclaimed pirate in all the splendour of a sunlit Palace breakfast room. The midday sun poured in through the windows, as the last round of coffee was served and the hotel guests got carried away by yet another beautiful Lisbon day. So what, pray tell, is a ‘pirate bra’? It’s safe to say that such a thing may not have ever existed were it not for the distressing battle with breast cancer that Morales faced a few years ago. She battled not only with the disease but also with finding a doctor who understood her then unconventional desire to forego breast reconstruction post-mastectomy. Not to mention the puzzled remarks of friends and family who were initially confounded by her decision.

Quando coloco o sutiã pirata e me vejo ao espelho, é o meu acenar de cabeça e uma “piscadela de olhos” (WINK) que me dizem “Que mulher sensual!”, uma sensação que achava que tinha perdido para sempre.

Noelia, que mora em Barcelona - de onde é nativa - com o seu filho e o seu parceiro, aceitou uma nova missão: a de se sentir jovial, até sensual, depois dos tempos difíceis que muitos doentes com cancro da mama (e os seus entes queridos) sofrem. Isto levou à criação do “adesivo mastectómico” Anna Bonny: um sutiã assimétrico para se usar na nudez do dia-a-dia, e que representa uma alternativa simples e não invasiva a uma reconstrução mamária. O nome foi inspirado na primeira mulher pirata, Anna Bonny, e toda a gama visa desempenhar um papel restaurador na vida das mulheres que enfrentam uma vida pós-mastectomia. Mais ainda, ajuda a enfrentar essa vida vestindo a mais delicada seda inglesa, algodão orgânico e alças Mokuba, usadas pelas casas de alta costura e feitas à mão pelas melhores costureiras de Barcelona. Nas palavras da sua criadora: “Os poderes curativos da indulgência nunca devem ser subestimados”.

Ao criar o adesivo mastectómico, Noelia fez algo de verdadeiramente excepcional.

Enquanto a temível palavra “C” - cancro tem a tendência para terminar qualquer conversa bruscamente e de forma sinistra, a gama Anna Bonny, recentemente lançada, tem feito mais do que iniciá-las.

Noelia faz-me lembrar Frida Kahlo: a mulher que não deixou os seus ditos “defeitos” físicos meterem-se no caminho da sua sexualidade e auto-expressão. Com a sua permissão, coloquei três gerberas encarnadas na fita do cabelo da Noelia, para uma fotografia inspirada na Frida. “Estas gerberas parecem as flores usadas na Revolução dos Cravos em Portugal em 1975”, diz ela. A linha Anna Bonny é ela própria como uma revolução pacífica: ao aprender a amar o seu novo corpo, Noelia está a transformar a forma como concebemos as mulheres e os seus corpos - com “defeitos” e tudo!

When I put on the patch, it’s my nod and my WINK that says “Ahoy there, sexy woman!” a feeling I thought I might have lost forever.

Residing in her native Barcelona with her partner and son, Noelia embarked on a new mission: to feel youthful, even sexy, after the miserable time that many breast cancer sufferers (and their loved ones) are familiar with. This led to the creation of the Anna Bonny ‘Mastectomy Patch’: an asymmetrical bra for everyday nudity and a simple, non-invasive alternative to post-operative breast reconstruction. Named after the first female pirate, the Anna Bonny collection aims to play a restorative role in the lives of women who are also facing life post-mastectomy.

Moreover, to face it whilst wearing the finest British silk, organic cotton and Mokuba straps used by the top couture fashion houses and handmade by top seamstresses in Barcelona. In the words of their creator: “indulgence should never be underestimated as a healing property”. In creating the mastectomy patch, Noelia has done something exceptional. While the dreaded ‘C’ word – cancer – has a tendency to put a grim and abrupt end to most conversations, the recently launched Anna Bonny line, has done nothing but start them.

Noelia reminds me of Frida Kahlo: a woman who did not let the (socalled) “flaws” of her body stand in the way of her sensuality and self-expression.

With her permission, I placed three red gerberas on Noelia’s headband for the Frida-inspired photo. “These flowers are the same deep red as the ones they used for the peaceful Portuguese revolution in 1975” she says. The Anna Bonny line is itself like a peaceful revolution: in learning to love her body anew, Noelia is transforming the way we perceive women and their bodies – “flaws” and all!

Nascido na Madeira, Ronaldo mudou-se para Lisboa quando ainda era muito novo, para perseguir uma carreira promissora como jogador de futebol - e foi isso que ele fez. Tendo-se estabelecido num patamar internacional, o avançado do Real Madrid regressou à sua terra natal e abriu o seu primeiro hotel no Funchal, em parceria com um dos primeiros grupos de hotelaria em Portugal. Aliás, foi nesta mesma ilha que o Pestana Hotel Group lançou o seu primeiro hotel em 1972. A cadeia Pestana CR7 Lifestyle Hotels irá expandir-se, com hotéis previstos em Madrid e Nova Iorque.

A Rua da Prata encheu-se de convidados glamorosos, aguardando pacientemente a chegada de Cristiano Ronaldo, enquanto os pedestres que por ali passavam tentavam dar uma espreitadela ao homem do momento.

Born in Madeira, Ronaldo moved to Lisbon at a young age to pursue a promising football career – and that he did.

Having established himself on an international stage, the Real Madrid striker has returned to his roots and opened his first hotel in Funchal, Madeira in partnership with Portugal’s premier hotel group. Incidentally, it was on this very island that the Pestana Hotel Group launched its first hotel in 1972.

The Pestana CR7 Lifestyle Hotels collaboration will be expanding, with hotels in Madrid and New York due to open in the near future.

Lisbon came to a standstill to see the opening of the second Pestana CR7 hotel in the Baixa Pombalina district. Crowds of glamorous guests patiently awaited the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo on Rua da Prata as curious passers-by tried to catch a glimpse of the man of the hour.

Visiting the Azores is like opening a newly bejewelled treasure chest brimming with precious stones… Nine islands of emerald green and black tourmaline, each dotted with alluring topaz lakes that draw us in with an air of dreamlike mystery.

São Miguel, the largest of all the islands, is recorded here in this travel logbook. It’s a series of surreal scenarios, sending chills throughout the senses. Breathtaking vistas awaken our belief in the existence of Paradise. It must be real after all, for we are standing in it.

Em 2011 Jesse James e os seus colegas lançaram o primeiro “Walk&Talk”, um festival anual de artes e cultura nos Açores. James, que nasceu no Canadá, mas cresceu em São Miguel, ajudou a criar um circuito de arte pública na ilha, que está agora disponível o ano inteiro.

O Walk&Talk possibilita aos artistas do mundo inteiro uma oportunidade única de criarem trabalho na maravilhosa ilha de São Miguel, onde cresceste. Ao mesmo tempo permite aos açorianos uma oportunidade, igualmente única, de assistirem a estas obras às quais normalmente não teriam acesso. Como têm reagido estes artistas e os habitantes locais?

Tem havido imenso diálogo. Sempre dissemos que para estabelecer uma espécie de laboratório criativo e artístico na ilha teríamos que arranjar artistas como embaixadores da experiência, enquanto a comunidade local ficaria responsável de encomendar, de certa forma, os projectos.

Isto é absolutamente fundamental: a ideia e sentimento de pertencer a cada uma das partes. Isso protege a missão do projecto e conecta tudo.

In 2011, Jesse James and his colleagues launched the first annual ‘Walk&Talk’ festival of arts and culture in the Azores. Born in Canada and raised in São Miguel, James has helped to create a public art circuit which is available all year round.

Walk&Talk provides artists from around the world a unique opportunity to create work on the beautiful island of São Miguel, where you grew up. At the same time it provides the local Azoreans with a similarly unique opportunity to see these works they might not otherwise be exposed to. What has been the feedback from these artists and from the locals?

It’s been a great dialogue. We’re always saying that in order to establish the island as a creative and artistic laboratory, we need artists as ambassadors of experience and the local community as prescribers of the project. That is fundamental: this idea and sense of belonging from each part. It just protects the mission of the project and connects everything.

Antes do Walk&Talk o que é que a ilha dos Açores tinha para oferecer aos seus habitantes, em termos de arte e cultura?

Os Açores têm sido sempre bastante produtivos na área das artes, com grandes escritores tais como Antero de Quental, Vitorino Nemésio, Natália Correia ou artistas visuais como Canto da Maia, Da Costa, Nuno da Câmara Pereira ou Tomaz Borba Vieira, e muitos mais ainda.

Além disso, as ilhas são muito ricas em tradições populares e têm eventos festivos a acontecer durante todo o ano, misturando rituais católicos e pagãos! A diferença é que agora há uma maior acessibilidade a mais conteúdos, novos fluxos e novos projectos que têm em conta a herança cultural das ilhas, ajudando a construir uma nova imagem mais contemporânea dos Açores.

Então no Walk&Talk quem é que trata do “andar” e quem é que trata do “falar”?

Somos uma equipa muito horizontal, o que significa que toda a gente faz um pouco de tudo. Como diretor, eu trato bastante da parte do “falar”, para trazer mais gente para o projecto, sejam eles artistas, estudantes, patrocinadores ou políticos. Mas quando o Before Walk&Talk, what did the island of the Azores have to offer its inhabitants in the way of art and culture?

The Azores have always been quite productive in the arts, with great writers such as Antero de Quental, Vitorino Nemésio, Natália Correia or visual artists like Canto da Maia, Da Costa, Nuno da Câmara Pereira or Tomaz Borba Vieira, just to name a few.

Besides that, the islands are very rich in popular traditions, with very festive and visual happenings throughout the year, mixing catholic and pagan rituals! The difference now is a greater accessibility to more content, new fluxes and projects looking at the islands and their heritage, building a new image of what contemporary Azores is.

So – for Walk&Talk – who does the walking and who does the talking?

We are a very horizontal team, which means everyone does a bit of everything. As director I do a lot of the talking to bring people on board the project, be it artists, students, sponsors or politicians. But when the festival starts the team talks smart and walks pretty fast!

As tuas viagens influenciaram de alguma forma o projecto?

Completamente. Aos 18 anos não sabia o que queria fazer por isso estudei Turismo, com a esperança de viajar pelo mundo inteiro, e até agora tenho tido muita sorte!

Visitar sítios novos faz com que fiques mais consciente das coisas, começando com as paisagens, as pessoas, a comida, as tradições e até mesmo a política do país e a forma como ele comunica com o resto do mundo. Esse contributo é óptimo, especialmente quando organizas um festival numa pequena ilha do Atlântico. Faz com que valorizes aquilo que tens mas também te torna mais ansioso e aberto a outras perspectivas.

Have your travels influenced the project?

Definitely. At age 18 I didn’t know what I wanted to do so I studied Tourism, in hope of travelling around the world, and I’ve been quite lucky! Going to new places just makes you more aware of things, starting with the landscape, the people, their food, traditions and even their homeland politics and how they communicate to the rest of the world.

So that is a great input, especially organizing a festival in a small island in the Atlantic. It makes you value what you have, but makes you more enthusiastic, anxious and open to other perspectives.

elebrated Portuguese street artist VHILS, aka Alexandre Farto, has been travelling the world, exploring the connections between global and local realities through his work and experiencing different cultures and people firsthand. Just as the Pestana Hotel Group has transformed once forgotten spaces into celebrated travel destinations – such as the Pestana Convento do Carmo in Brazil – Farto is also preoccupied with the process of destruction in order to create; breathing new life into the very thing he ‘destroys’. Having taken part in the Walk & Talk festival, we were keen to ask the artist about his art and travels.

A sua prática artística tem evoluído no sentido de dar enfoque a sítios pouco conhecidos e retratando populações locais.

Quando se deu conta que a sua arte podia ser usada para chamar a atenção para questões e populações negligenciadas? (Por exemplo, quando visitou a aldeia indígena de Araçaí no Brasil.) À medida que me fui envolvendo na cena do graffiti em Lisboa, acabei por me dar conta de diferentes realidades na cidade, os seus subúrbios e as suas comunidades negligenciadas. Por volta de 2004 envolvime com uma associação cultural que se chama Khapaz e que faz trabalho social com a comunidade de Arrentela, na minha cidade natal do Seixal. Foi fundada por um amigo muito próximo, Chullage, um músico e activista luso-cabo-verdiano, e por isso acabei por fazer vários trabalhos voluntários sob a forma de workshops, ensinando aos jovens da comunidade algumas técnicas e competências artísticas.

Isto transformou-se em projectos mais abrangentes, com várias comunidades similares por Portugal, patrocinados pelo Comissariado para a Imigração e Minorias Étnicas. Neste âmbito tive também as minhas primeiras experiências na criação de projectos artísticos públicos e isso ensinoume que o poder da arte tem que ajudar a mudar e melhorar qualquer ambiente descurado, assim como comunicar ideias.

Quando comecei a trabalhar com comunidades noutros países que estavam a passar por mudanças que afetam gravemente as suas identidades e fracturando as suas estruturas sociais, como a China em 2012 e o Brasil em 2012 e 2013, já tinha acumulado toda esta experiência. Acredito genuinamente que a arte, independentemente do tipo de forma que tomar, pode contribuir para criar um melhor ambiente para as populações e as suas comunidades.

Sim...faz parte, e aprendes a lidar com isso.

Já tem experiência em trabalhar com cortiça, explosivos e locais de construção decadentes - qual o material ou ferramenta com a qual mais gostas de trabalhar?

Paredes e berbequins.

Se pudesse ser lembrado por um dos seus projectos em específico, qual deles seria?

Prefiro deixar as outras pessoas decidirem isso. Acho muito difícil escolher um só no meio de tantos. Para mim, todos eles têm algo especial, até aqueles que não resultaram tão bem, porque gosto de aprender com os erros.

Your artistic practice has evolved to focus on little-known places and creating portraits of local people. When did you realise that your art could be used to bring attention to neglected issues and peoples? (For example, when you visited the Indigenous village of Araçaí in Brazil.)

As I grew up involved with Lisbon’s graffiti scene, I ended up seeing a different side of the city, its suburbs and its neglected communities.

Around 2004 I became involved with a cultural association named Khapaz which does social work in the community of Arrentela, in my hometown of Seixal. It was founded by a Luso Cape Verdean musician and social activist Chullage, a close friend of mine, and I ended up doing lots of voluntary work in the form of workshops, teaching the community’s youth art techniques but also technical skills. This evolved into larger projects with various similar communities around Portugal sponsored by the country’s High Commission for Immigration and Ethnic Minorities. Within this scope I also had my first experiences in creating public art projects in these communities and this taught me the power that art has to help change and improve a neglected environment, but also to communicate ideas. When I started working with communities in other countries undergoing critical changes that 83

were affecting their identities and fracturing their social structures, like China in 2012, and Brazil in 2012 and 2013, I had already had this experience. I honestly believe that art, regardless of its form, can contribute to creating a better environment for people and communities.

What are your most commonly travelled ‘triangles’? Local/City/Global?

Global: Portugal / China / United States Cities: Lisbon / Hong Kong / New York Lisbon: Seixal / Barreiro / Marvila If you could create a hotel without any limitations on time, place, concept or materials – what would it be like?

This is difficult to envision, but for sure I would choose some neglected, derelict place that art could transform, such as an abandoned stone quarry or concrete factory...

Where are you dying to go?

Antarctica and Mars.

Have you ever gotten into trouble whilst making street art?

Yes... it’s all part of the deal and you learn to cope with it.

From working with cork, explosives and dilapidated building sites - which material or tool is your favourite to work with?

Walls and rotary hammer drills.

If you could be remembered for one of your artworks, which one would it be?

I’d rather leave that to other people. I find it very difficult to choose one single piece out of the many. To me, all of them have something special, even those that didn’t come out well, as I like to learn from mistakes.

Heberth Sobral visual artist and playmobil pundit

Se conseguir reservar o quarto 26 do Pestana Cidadela Cascais, terá a oportunidade de se deparar com a obra incrivelmente original do artista brasileiro Heberth Sobral, já que o seu trabalho aí está exposto em permanência.

Quando pensamos em Lego e Playmobil, lembramo-nos dos jogos inocentes da nossa infância e dos mundos que inventávamos para que servissem de casa para esses bonecos. Sobral, que vive no Rio de Janeiro, tem virado essa nostalgia do avesso, através da sua astuta representação dos bonecos Playmobil em cenas da vida urbana quotidiana no Brasil. A arte dos Playmobil de Sobral cruza o mundo micro com o macro, a inocência da infância com temas da vida adulta, a imobilidade com o movimento.

Apesar das cenas violentas e trágicas que muitas vezes os rodeiam, as suas pequenas caras estão permanentemente marcadas por um sorriso estranhamente indiferente.

Embora o artista seja mais conhecido pela sua representação destes brinquedos no meio de contextos políticos, históricos e quotidianos em mutação - desde retratos de família a detenções, manifestações públicas e escravatura - foi a sua interpretação dos azulejos tradicionais portugueses que inspiraram o editorial “Eu Quero ser um Playmobil” na última edição da WINK. Tivemos a sorte de conversar com o artista na sua breve passagem pela capital portuguesa para a exibição da sua instalação de video-mapping no festival de luzes Lumina, em Cascais.

If you happen to stay in Room 26 at the Pestana Cidadela Art Hotel in Cascais, you will encounter the highly original work of Brazilian visual artist Heberth Sobral, whose work is permanently on display there.

When we think of Legos and Playmobils, it’s usually a reminder of the innocent childhood games and worlds we invented for these little figures to inhabit. Sobral, who is based in Rio de Janeiro, has been turning this nostalgia on its head through his clever depiction of Playmobils in everyday scenes of urban life in Brazil. Sobral’s Playmobil art functions at the intersection of the micro and the macro, of childhood innocence and adult themes, of stillness and of movement. Despite the tragic and violent scenes that often surround them, their tiny faces are fixed with an eerily permanent and indifferent grin. Although the artist is most well known for his depiction of these toys amidst changing political, historical and quotidian contexts – from family portraits to police arrests, public demonstrations and slavery – it was his interpretation of the traditional Portuguese azulejos (tiles) that inspired our ‘I Wanna be a Playmobil’ editorial in the last issue. We were lucky enough to catch up with the artist on his brief return to the Portuguese capital as he was exhibiting a video-mapping installation for the Lumina Light Festival in Cascais.

Porque começaste a usar os bonecos da Playmobil?

Comecei a usar na série “Violência não é brincadeira” onde usei o sorriso do boneco para criticar a passividade brasileira perante a violência. De lá pra cá o boneco foi revelando outras linguagens usadas no meu trabalho. Com o Paratoys neste caso usei os bonecos quebrados para falar sobre as deficiências físicas e a superação através do desporto.

É importante para mim pois passa um pouco sobre a minha experiência de vida e lembranças da infância. Partoys foi um projeto desenvolvido em parceria com o Comité Paralímpico Brasileiro e com a colaboração e consultoria do meu amigo José Luiz Martins, portador de deficiência física. Os trabalhos foram realizados com bonecos quebrados, brinquedos que são descartados. Não muito longe, é a realidade que temos com o próximo nesta situação. Tive na infância um colega com deficiência fisico. Veio-me à lembrança a sua tentativa de se incluir nas brincadeiras, mas sempre o descartávamos, ninguém queria ele na sua equipa. Hoje, adulto, vejo o grau de desprezo que estas pessoas enfrentam, “jogávamos” ele fora todos os dias sem nos darmos conta. De uma maneira lúdica, é uma forma de voltar á infância e dizer às outras crianças para perceberem a diversidade de condições e ver que aquela criança que você não queria na sua equipa pode vir a se tornar um atleta de ponta!

Como é que as tuas experiências de vida influenciaram a tua arte? O que pretendes transmitir com a tua arte?

A inspiração veio depois de uma residência artística no Cidadela Art District, no Pestana Cidadela Cascais, onde estive, pois recebi um convite para fazer um quarto - Room 26. Já trabalhava com bonecos na ocasião. A minha ideia era fazer algo que tivesse a ver com a cultura local e como eu poderia representar isso através do estilo do meu trabalho. Foi quando, andando pelas ruas de Cascais e Sintra, percebi a cumplicidade entre a arquitetura portuguesa e os azulejos, dando um tom sofisticados aos edifícios. Dessa observação surgiu a ideia de fazer os azulejos usando os bonecos no qual mostro o meu estilo de trabalho.

A minha experiência de vida está presente na minha arte através das minhas lembranças e das demais pessoas que conheço através da convivência. Relato algo que aconteceu comigo ou com os outros, coisas comuns a todos. O foco é sobre a vida em si, as cenas do quotidiano que revela o meu passado, meus pensamentos, meus desejos, meus traumas, minhas alegrias tornado uma narrativa contínua num diário da vida, o qual também pode ser comum a qualquer pessoa.

Inspirou-nos com a sua obra ‘Azulejos’. O que o inspirou para a fazer?

Como chegou a esta ideia?

Onde encontras os materiais para as tuas obras?

Eu encontro os materiais para as minhas obras em diversos lugares, dependendo da necessidade do cenário, encontro materiais em papelarias em lojas de brinquedos, produtos de maquetes, mas geralmente eu mesmo faço muitas das coisas do cenário.

Why did you start using Playmobils?

It is important to me because, as I said in Question 2, it has to do with my life experience and childhood memories.

The ‘Paratoys’ project was developed in partnership with the Brazilian Paralympics Committee and with the assistance and advice of my friend José Luiz Martins, who himself has a physical disability. The work was made using broken dolls, toys that are discarded. This is not far from what we see in the real world, with people in this situation.

I had a childhood friend who was physically handicapped and I remember his attempts to be included in the games but he was always ‘discarded’/ ignored, no one wanted him on their team. Today, as an adult, we can see the degree of contempt people with disabilities often face.

We played without him every day without realizing it. In a playful way, it is a way to go back to childhood and to help children realise the diversity of conditions and see that the child who you don’t want on your team could one day become a top athlete!

Why is the ‘Paratoys’ project important to you?

I started using them in the series “Violence is not a joke”, in which I used the Playmobil’s smile to criticize Brazil’s passivity amidst violence. Since then the doll has been revealing other languages used in my work. With ‘Paratoys’, for example, I used the broken dolls to talk about the physical deficiencies that people overcome through sport.

How have your life experiences influenced your art? What do you intend to convey through your art?

Inspiration for my ‘Azulejos’ came after an artist residency at the Cidadela Art District, in the Pestana Cidadela Cascais, where I was invited to make art for one of the rooms there - Room 26. I was already working with toys in my art at the time. My idea was to make something that had to do with the local culture and to represent it in my own style. It was when I was walking the streets of Cascais and Sintra that I realised the relationship between Portuguese architecture and the tiles (azulejos) that gave the houses an air of sophistication. From this observation came the idea of replicating the tiles using the toys in my style of work.

My life experience is present in my art through my memories and the people that I have met in life. I recount things that have happened to me or to other people that is common to everyone. The focus of my work is life itself, the everyday scenes that reveal my past, my thoughts, my traumas and my joys – a continuous narrative in daily life, which can be common to anyone.

How did you come up with that idea?

Where do you find the materials for your art?

I find materials for my works in different places depending on the need of the setting, materials I find in newsagents, toy stores, product models… but usually I do things with what I find at the scene.

Quais são os seus prazeres favoritos?

Reuniões de família, rodeado pelos meus 8 netos, convívio com amigos se possível com uma boa patuscada, viajar em lazer e por fim, mas não em último, ver o meu Benfica ganhar!

Onde gostaria de ter vivido? Continuo a pensar que Portugal é o melhor país do mundo para se viver.

Qual o seu herói? Nelson Mandela, sem dúvida.

Qual é o talento natural que não tem, mas gostaria de ter?

Talento para música. Adorava saber tocar bem alguns instrumentos e sobretudo saber cantar (bem!).

Um ódio de estimação? A soberba!

Qual o seu lema de vida? Procurar ser feliz e fazer os outros felizes (às vezes até consigo!).

What makes you get up in the morning?

What wakes me up in the morning is my alarm clock, but what makes me stand up with joy and energy is my lust for life!

What are your favourite qualities in a man?

Friendship without self-interest.

What are your favourite qualities in a woman? Companionship and being a ‘partner in crime’.

What do you appreciate most in a friend?

Loyalty.

What is your idea of happiness? Being with my family in joy, health and high spirits.

What is your idea of misery? Family conflict and poor health.

What do you stand up for? A Utopia, in which all people may live in dignity and peace.

What is your idea of freedom? Freedom is the ability to be yourself, without impeding on the freedom of others.

What would be a perfect death? Sudden death without suffering at 95 years of age - after having a great quality of life in old age.

If you could be someone else who would you like it to be? I like being who I am, with my many faults and some good qualities.

What brings you the most pleasure in life? Family gatherings, being surrounded by my 8 grandchildren, socializing with friends (accompanied by a great meal if possible), travelling leisurely and last but not least - seeing my Benfica win!

Where would you have liked to have lived? I continue to think that Portugal is the best country in the world to live.

Who is your hero? Nelson Mandela, without a doubt.

What natural talent would you like to have which you don’t? Talent for music. I would love to know how to play some instruments and especially how to sing (well!).

One of your pet hates? Arrogance!

What is your motto? Try to be happy and make others happy (sometimes I even achieve it!)
