Why SPF 50+?
WHAT THE DERMATOLOGIST HAS TO SAY
Dr Kristof, from a dermatological perspective, why should people use products with a sun protection factor of 50 when the protective effect is only slightly higher than that provided by factor 30?
Factor 30 blocks approximately 96.7% of UVB radiation, while factor 50 blocks approximately 98%! This difference of 1.3% may seem small at first, but it actually means that with a sun protection factor of 30, 3.3% of the UVB radiation directly impacts the skin, whereas with a sun protection factor of 50, only 2% of the radiation reaches the skin. That is a difference of nearly 40%!
What’s more, people never apply enough sun cream. To achieve the specified protection factor, 2 milligrammes of sun cream should be applied per square centimetre of skin. For an average adult, this corresponds to around eight teaspoons, namely approximately 35 millilitres. In general, however, people only apply a maximum of a quarter to half the required amount, meaning that the specified sun protection factor of 50 is actually reduced to a factor of 10 to 20.
