What are the Possible Risks of the Procedure?

What are the symptoms of GERD? Common signs and symptoms of GERD include: A burning sensation in your chest (heartburn), usually after eating. It can be worse at night or while lying down.

How is GERD diagnosed?

A Nissen fundoplication is a surgery to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD is a digestive system disorder that affects the esophagus. The stomach acid and contents persistently flow back up through your esophagus which causes irritation of the lining and discomfort. Most people are able to manage the discomfort of GERD with lifestyle changes and medications. But in some cases they may need surgery to ease the symptoms if they persist.

Your health care provider might be able to diagnose GERD based on a history of your signs and symptoms and a physical examination.

How is the Surgery done?

The surgery tightens the junction between the esophagus and the stomach to prevent acid reflux.

The esophagus is the tube between your mouth and stomach. The surgeon may use an open or a laparoscopic approach, this will discussed and determined before the surgery. The surgeon will make an incision(s) in your abdomen and wraps the upper part of the stomach (fundus) around the lower part of the esophagus then finishes by closing the incision with staples.

1. Gastroscopy. A thin, flexible tube equipped with a light and camera is inserted down your throat. The endoscope helps your provider see inside your esophagus and stomach.

This exam may detect inflammation of the esophagus or other complications.

2. X-ray of the upper digestive system. Xrays are taken after you drink a chalky liquid that coats and fills the inside lining of your digestive tract. The coating allows your doctor to see a silhouette of your esophagus and stomach. This is particularly useful for people who are having trouble swallowing.
