What is a Colonoscopy?

Why is it required?

A Colonoscopy is an examination of the large intestine (colon). A flexible lighted tube fitted with a tiny camera is inserted through the anus. The inside of the rectum and colon can be viewed for polyps, cancer, or diseases such as Crohn’s disease. If necessary, polyps or other types of abnormal tissue can be removed as well as tissue samples (biopsies). This procedure is performed under sedation.

A screening colonoscopy is done to check for cancer and colon diseases.

Removing polyps or finding cancer at an early stage can increase your chances for a full recovery. Your doctor may recommend screening for colon and rectal cancer starting at age 45. If you have risk factors it may be done before 45 years old.

A diagnostic colonoscopy is done to find the cause of anemia, a change in bowel habits, or abdominal pain. A colonoscopy can also treat an issue inside the colon such as bleeding or narrowing.

What are the Possible Risks of the Procedure?

Your surgeon will do everything possible to minimize risks, but a colonoscopy, like all procedures, has risks.

A reaction to the sedative used during the exam Bleeding from the site where a tissue sample (biopsy), polyp, or other abnormal tissue was removed A tear in the colon or rectum wall (perforation) Your risk of complications depends on your overall health and the reason for your colonoscopy.
