SURFACE TYPES

CONCEPT The sauna is nestled in the corner of the sunken side yard. The surface consists of pebbles and a wooden teak flooring that provides comfortable and stylish access through. Planting of bamboo species and additional panels depending on preference and level of privacy) the space has an edge that encloses to the outside world enabling the user to shower in less open settings.

Teak floor panels provide a comfortable and tactile surface.

Comfortable to bare feet and indicating the usage and way of passage the material has an aesthetic quality when contrasted with the pebbles.

LOWER BALCONY CONCEPT To create a wind-free and relaxing greenified zone annexing to the bedroom. Via installation of glass panels to the surrounding wall the balcony space can preserve a comfortable temperature, providing a space of extended usage serving the user until sundown and the later winter seasons of the year.

A xeriscape concept planting plan includes 3-4 cacti and succulent species mix. This will require minimal maintenance and watering as well as perfectly acclimatized to the conditions framed. The planting assortment provides stimulating forms that add to the atmosphere and frame the space. A green wall filled with smaller planters shelves can be installed on the wall and should have a self-regulating and self-watering system to keep the wall green and alive and vibrant. Further additions to the balcony made in oak are two loungers, two tables, a bench and two planters, the second including a Chinese fan palm.

PORCH CONCEPT

By greenifying the staircase entrance to the building these two important facets are imbued with a calm atmosphere, enhancing the overall feeling of the house and uniting the outdoor spaces. The staircase is the first arrival point and a transition point so it is therefore an important area that creates a first impression and enforces the expectations with the guest of what else is to come. The area outside the main door serves as a waiting area for guests. At evening time it becomes a great place to change the settings, take a respite and enjoy the sunset.

PORCH PLAN

Vegetation on the porch provides an additional layer of comfort and softens the passage of transition as you reach the front door.

A hanging bench and side bench create a social space to enjoy the porch.

MAIN CONCEPT

Building on the existing qualities of the site the aim of the concept is to frame the spaces to become more individually defined. Moving the firepit area to another that is less exposed to the elements will create a more comfortable space and bring a visually pleasing view from the inside. The new position will enhance the feeling of comfort by creating a wall of ornamental grasses behind the user giving it a unique spatiality and frame.

The orchard exists today at a lower level and is currently separated conceptually by a level change. By clearly marking and defining the edges of the orchard we separate the two both from each other both visually and functionally. Each area now has its own visual hierarchy of transitions, and spatial dynamics creating a holistically more readable space with defined character.

THUJA PLANTINGS

OPTIONS

Planting of 6 mature Thuja species will create an iconic frame around the orchard and neatly help to enclose the spaciality surrounding the swimming pool plateau.

A suggested later phase could be a bespoke pergola or arbor-like passage that could be designed to suit the elevations and organic forms created by the steps. These could be planted with a mixture of vine species including grape and wisteria and evergreen species providing varying visual transitions of grapes and flowers from spring to late summer. This would provide a transition between the fruit orchard and the swimming pool patio. A circular bench would match the existing water feature and could be constructed around the tree. Taking advantage of the qualities of the oak tree and bringing the user in a closer unification with the nature of the site.

GARDEN PLAN

The design changes are minimal in relation to the existing hardscape formations, requiring very little reworking and minimizing building costs.

By moving the fire pit to another location a unique space can be created with surrounding ornamental grasses and cascading rock species. The design would include a bespoke granite bench, and a hanging shade structure.

Orchard seating area

Additional planting of black lace Elderflower has impressive seasonal changes and enchanting deep colours. The solid form of this bush can help to enclose the side area of the house and also frame the hill elevation and petanque area.

Phlox

New plants can provide a cascading effect providing new visual transitions to the varying levels. Species such asVirginia Creeper, Creeping Phlox, silver falls. Also optional moving the trailing rosemary to other areas where it is better suited.
