Chancellor’s welcome

I am delighted to welcome you, your families and honoured guests to York Minster on this long-anticipated day of celebration. It is a privilege to gather here in this magnificent setting to recognise your achievements, and to wish you well for the future.

I know that a vast amount of hard work has gone into gaining your university degree, and I am full of admiration for the dedication and perseverance you have shown in your studies.

Education brings with it responsibilities, including the duty to make a positive contribution to the world, to inspire others, and to continue to learn and reflect. I hope that after studying at York St John University you have also been inspired by the values that guide us as an open, innovative, transformative and ambitious community with a strong sense of belonging.

Your graduation ceremony may feel like your final departure from York St John, but your connection to the University will last a lifetime. In becoming alumni of York St John University, you have earned yourselves a special place in our history and will become part of an active global alumni community. Together, we represent the incredible power of education in bringing people together, from all across the world, in the pursuit of knowledge and progress.

I hope this is just the beginning of an extraordinary life experience, and I offer you my very best wishes as you set out to make your mark in the world.

Vice Chancellor’s welcome

It is my great pleasure to welcome you as graduands of York St John University and to welcome your families, friends and guests to share in this special occasion with you. This is a day to make memories, celebrate successes and to mark a significant milestone in your life.

Your graduation ceremony provides an opportunity to reflect on all that you have gained during your university journey, the friendships you have made, and everyone who has supported you along the way.

Go, find your place!

Ring out the bells! Celebrate!

Your journey has advanced, Your feet are almost come, To that bold fork in Being’s road, Next steps not yet begun.

You stand on a threshold, Before a gate, Look back with pleasure, Approach with grace.

You had your time with us, We held your space, We open the gate with you, Go, find your place!

Together we take responsibility, We see things how they are. We look in a glass darkly, but We see, and speak, face to face.

We send you with love!

Ring out the bells! Celebrate! Ring out the old, ring in the new. Ring out the bells! Celebrate! Approach with grace.

Ring out the bells! Celebrate! Ring out the old, ring in the new. Ring out the bells! Celebrate! Go, find your place!

You stand on a threshold, Before a gate, Look back with pleasure,

You had your time with us, We held your space, We open the gate with you,

This new anthem is a commission composed for the York St John graduation ceremonies in York Minster, premiering in November 2024. The piece fuses the traditional and modern and is tailored for our current students and staff to sing in recognition of our graduating students. It explores the threshold between degree study and what lies ahead, celebrating the graduation ceremony as a potent reminder of transition.

During the ceremony

The Presiding Officer of York St John University will confer Degrees, Honorary Degrees and Prizes.

Musical Interlude: The University Choir will sing Locus Iste by Anton Bruckner.

Graduate vote of thanks.

The Vice Chancellor will address the congregation.

The Presiding Officer of York St John University will declare the congregation closed.

As the procession leaves

The York St John University Drummers will play a celebratory piece created by York St John University alumnus Dave Boston.

Guests should remain in their seats until the procession has left the nave.

York St John University

York St John University has been delivering education for social and civic benefit for almost two hundred years. We are proud of our heritage, our church foundation, and our pioneering education of women. We celebrate our growing and diverse community on our York and London campuses, where we provide a welcoming, inclusive, and inspirational learning environment to over 12,000 students.

Our core mission and purpose have remained steadfast since our beginning – to be a catalyst for change for a fairer future, through the transformative power of education.

Social impact

Our historic commitment to social justice underpins all our actions and decision-making. We were delighted to be named University of the Year for Social Inclusion by The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2025, for empowering students from all backgrounds with the opportunity to study and thrive in higher education. This recognition highlights how York St John supports students to achieve their full potential, by providing guidance, fair access, practical support and financial scholarships to reduce the barriers that some students face. Our Institute for Social Justice underpins our mission to stand up for social justice by facilitating research, projects and partnerships that help us to pursue and promote a fairer society.

We hold Race Equality Charter and Athena Swan Charter bronze awards for progress to advance race and gender equality in higher education. Students like you have helped us to maintain University of Sanctuary status for our work supporting refugees and asylum seekers. We are proud to work with Refugee Action York to provide community allotment spaces for refugees and space for weekly drop-in sessions. As volunteers, campaigners, activists and ambassadors, you have demonstrated your commitment to improving lives and have contributed to our welcoming and diverse university community.

Community and partnerships

York St John has always been a university in, and of, the community and our students reap the benefits of this. The York St John Communities Centre provides mental health and wellbeing services, support, and projects across York and North Yorkshire. Their free community language classes for families in York and the surrounding areas have helped to preserve heritage language learning in children and young people. Our Law Clinic offers legal advice and assistance to those in need, and YSJActive provides community sport facilities and support for research projects. Converge, a university-led programme supporting adults with lived experience of mental health challenges, continues to provide an innovative approach to knowledge exchange and recovery-focused education, and

in 2025 received the Community Engagement Award at the Educate North Awards. The University’s All About Respect project has Home Office funding to tackle sexual harm and hate crime among teenagers. And our nationally recognised Military Human programme provides support for the transition from the military to daily life. These meaningful activities all offer a sense of inclusion to those involved.

We also work in partnership with public and private sector organisations across our region, with the establishment of our new MRI clinic, developed in collaboration with the York & Scarborough Teaching Hospital NHS Trust, playing a vital role in reducing MRI waiting times locally. We sponsor, support or host several of the city’s major events, including York Pride, York Literature Festival, York Business Festival, the Aesthetica Short Film Festival and the York International Shakespeare Festival. Each presents exciting opportunities for students to get involved and gain experience.

Teaching and research

York St John’s experts explore ideas with fresh perspectives and purpose, with research by our academics continuing to make headlines. Our Institute for Health and Care Improvement addresses key challenges facing health and social care sectors. This work aims to influence decision-makers with evidence and research to inspire change as we navigate the health challenges of the modern world. As part of our ongoing commitment to impactful research, the University is set to launch its third research institute in 2026: the Institute for Culture and Heritage. This new institute will support our work as the University for Social Impact and expand upon our established research excellence in the Humanities, Arts, and related fields such as languages, linguistics, and tourism.

We launched a Postgraduate Research School in Autumn 2024, providing a dedicated support service for postgraduate research students and their supervisors, including a research skills training programme, scholarships and funding assistance. We continue to build our research capacity after our best-ever Research Excellence (REF) outcome in 2022.

We know our students value their experience at York St John, as your feedback in the 2025 National Student Survey led to even higher positivity scores than the previous year. Feedback from our international and postgraduate research students place us above the UK average for overall satisfaction.

We are exceptionally proud to have achieved Gold for student experience, and Silver overall in the latest Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF). This focus on excellence has driven our upward trajectory on quality, including entry standards, continuation, outcomes, and progression.

Sustainability

Our carbon reduction and biodiversity achievements are sector leading. All our energy comes from sustainable, low carbon sources and we are designing new developments to ensure our energy efficiency levels are among the best in the world. We have improved biodiversity on our campuses with more than 1,000 new trees planted alongside habitats for bugs, birds and hedgehogs to thrive. We are working in collaboration with wildlife specialists to increase habitat for the endangered tansy beetle, water vole and great crested newt in a dedicated wildlife area on our Sports Park. The Institute for Social Justice’s Living Lab initiative ‘Feeding the Campus’ is an ambitious project for students to research and improve university food systems. Our York campus gained Food for Life Silver accreditation from the Soil Association, which recognises the quality and sustainability of our catering services as good for our climate, nature and health.

Our achievements and the stories we tell about our University are only part of the picture. The most important stories are the individual ones of your personal successes and struggles, ideas and inspirations. The friends you’ve made, the experiences you’ve gained, the work you’ve done and all you’ve learnt. We want you to look back with pride on your time at university. We hope that being a York St John student has been transformational in the most positive sense and that you carry our shared legacy with you into the world.

Your YSJ community

Congratulations on your graduation! Now is a time of change, but one thing stays the same: you are still a member of the York St John University community. Here at York St John, we are your community for life, not just until you graduate.

For over 180 years, our graduates have upheld our values of community, inclusivity and social justice as they began their careers and lives outside York St John. We can’t wait to see you shine, wherever life takes you as you begin your journey.

Stay in touch

Graduating from York St John means you are now part of our worldwide alumni community. Wherever and whatever your adventures, we would love to hear your news and keep you up to date with what’s happening at York St John. Keep an eye out for an email explaining more about what it means to be an alum and how York St John can continue to support and encourage you.

Our most up to date news can always be found on Facebook (@ysjualumni), Instagram (@ysjualumni) and X (@YSJUAlumni). Whatever your next steps, we also encourage you to join our LinkedIn group (York St John Alumni) for regular updates about benefits and upcoming opportunities. In addition, we’ll continue to send you monthly e-newsletters and an annual alumni magazine, 1841, so make sure you give us your most up to date details so you don’t miss out!

If you haven’t been receiving monthly newsletters from us, please email alumni@yorksj.ac.uk to update your details.

Our lifelong promise to you

York St John is your university for life. Whether you want to attend special events or public lectures, organise a reunion or attend one we’ve organised, you’re always welcome on campus. As an alum, you are also entitled to discounted room bookings, free library membership, and other special benefits. We also offer all our alumni a range of discounts on postgraduate study, including on eligible Research Degrees.

You can find out more about your benefits, our alumni events and how to stay in touch on our website: www.yorksj.ac.uk/alumni

You’re an inspiration

Our graduates are our most powerful ambassadors and we are always keen to hear your stories. On Alumination you can read inspiring stories from our alumni community and share your own. Your York St John journey is a powerful advertisement to potential students and can also help alumni and other recent graduates understand the diverse careers our alumni enjoy.

You can browse Alumination and submit an alumni snapshot to share your journey: blog.yorksj.ac.uk/alumination

With you, we can do more

We would also love you to help support our current students. Whether you support students by being part of our events programme, providing work experience or internships, giving a guest lecture, or joining a career talk; your experience is exactly the inspiration our students need.

You can also help current students by supporting our alumnifunded scholarships. As you know, access to Higher Education is becoming a greater challenge for many students. Ensuring as many people as possible, whatever their background, can change their lives through education is the cornerstone of everything we do at York St John.

Every year, thanks to our alumni and friends, we change lives by providing scholarships to those who need it most. Your donations, large or small, make a real difference to our students in reaching their potential. For more information about how your support can change lives, please visit yorksj.ac.uk/support-us to see how you can help.

You can contact us at any time by emailing alumni@yorksj.ac.uk or by messaging us on any of our social media platforms.

We wish you good luck and happiness for your future and can’t wait to hear what happens next.

Your support is gratefully received!

Celebrating the College of Ripon and York St John

This year marks 50 years since our two founding colleges, Ripon College and St John’s College, merged to form The College of Ripon and York St John (CRYSJ). From 1975 until 2001, our students thrived at our two campuses and created lifelong bonds with their community. To celebrate this pivotal point in our University history, and the legacy of the alumni who studied there, we created the College of Ripon and York St John 50 Year Alumni Prize.

This prize was funded entirely by donations from our CRYSJ alumni community, including through the sale of commemorative pin badges. Thanks to the generosity of our community, we were able to award 50 prizes to the Class of 2025. Prize winners were nominated by University staff for their community drive, resilience and their support of others during their studies, key values held by our alumni community.

Congratulations to our prize winners!
