Welcome to the INAPTA & KPTA 2018 Joint Conference. Our vision for this conference is "relevant continuing education for all members." With this goal in mind, you'll find a diverse selection of courses and events for clinicians across all practice settings. We hope you will take advantage of the many strategic networking opportunities throughout the weekend to meet colleagues from both chapters.

There is a potential to earn up to nine continuing education hours (category 1 for Kentucky) by attending the full conference. Take advantage of the bargain deal of $20 per CEU hour with early bird registration for PT members (less than $17 per hour for PTA members). Session Descriptions TechnoPalooza: Focus on Wearable Technology in Physical Therapy - presented by Robert Latz, PT, DPT, CHCIO & Sean Bagbey, PTA, MHA, ATC, CIRS Wearable mobile health technologies have exploded over the past 5 years. With improvements in technology these devices have become smaller, more affordable and are more consumer friendly. Wearable mobile health sensors provide the ability to accurately and precisely monitor and measure steps taken, calories burned, transitions, time spent doing certain activities, and other health parameters while patients go about their everyday activities in their home and community. This information can help inform physical therapy practice and even be used as part of a behavioral intervention to motivate clients to improve their health. This course is designed for anyone with an interest in increasing their understanding of and ability to utilize wearable technologies in clinical practice. The course will combine hands on opportunities to explore currently available wearable technology with group discussion, case presentations, and speaker presentations so that attendees can gain a full appreciation of how wearable technologies can be incorporated into physical therapy clinical practice. In addition, we will discuss data collection, storage, sharing options, and security risks. This course will make attendees aware of the opportunities, benefits, and precautions in using wearable mobile health technologies.

Robert Latz, PT, DPT, CHCIO is the only Physical Therapist with the HealthCare CIO certification from CHIME (College of Health Information Management Executives). He is a Board Member of the National Association for the Support of Long Term Care (NASL) and a Co-Chair of the NASL IMPACT Act Implementation Workgroup. Dr. Latz is a Board Member of the APTA Health Policy and Administration Section and the President of the Technology Special Interest Group. He is a member of the APTA Orthopedic; Home Health; and Geriatric Sections. He is a HIMSS Revenue Cycle Management PAC Workgroup member.

Dr. Latz is the Chief Information Officer for Trinity Rehabilitation Services, which improves human function by providing contracted therapy services in Post-Acute Care settings.

Legal and Ethical Issues related to Technology in Physical Therapy - presented by Robert Latz, PT, DPT, CHCIO & Louis D. Kelly Can I use my phone to take a picture of the patient? Can we use that new app we just downloaded? Can we change the settings in our EHR so that it stops timing out so quickly? Can we use data analysis to determine who to see and not see in our clinic? Can we begin our TeleRehab clinic tomorrow? These and other questions will be reviewed in this interactive panel discussion of legal and ethical issues around the use of technology in the clinical setting. In addition, we will discuss how these options can be used in a very positive way for everyone involved.

Louis D. Kelly is a partner in the law firm of Adams, Stepner, Woltermann & Dusing in Covington, KY where he is a part of the government, litigation, and labor and employment practice groups. He also serves as the General Counsel for the Kentucky Board of Physical Therapy where he provides legal counsel to the Board, prosecutes disciplinary cases, and assists in drafting administrative regulations and new legislation. He has given presentations before the Kentucky Public Human Resources Association, Kentucky Public Libraries Association, Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy, and the National Conference of State Boards of Nursing. In April 2018 he had an article featured in the Journal of Nursing Regulation regarding Open Records and Open Meetings Laws. In May 2017 he was elected to serve as the Commonwealth’s Attorney for the 54th Judicial Circuit consisting of Boone and Gallatin counties beginning in January 2019.

Session Descriptions Cancer Rehabilitation for Therapists - presented by Mary I. Fisher PT, PhD, OCS & Claire C. Davies PT, PhD This class is designed for the physical therapist and physical therapist assistant who is treating a patient reporting a history of cancer in their medical history. An overview of common cancer diagnoses will be presented identifying the functional impairments these patients develop following treatment for cancer. Evidence-based rehabilitation strategies will also be presented as well as recommended outcome measures specific to different cancer populations.

Claire C. Davies PT, PhD, Certified Lymphedema Therapist is a Staff Physical Therapist and Research consultant at Baptist Health Lexington in Lexington Kentucky. She graduated from Sheffield Hallam University with her Bsc (Hons) Physiotherapy degree, England; T-DPT from Simmons College, Boston and earned her PhD in Rehabilitation Science from the University of Kentucky. She has over 20 years of clinical practice experience in manual therapy, orthopedics and oncology rehabilitation. Dr. Davies current research interest is primarily in clinical applications in oncology; diagnosis, intervention and risk factors for secondary upper quadrant lymphedema, and outcome measures for oncology rehabilitation. She has published in such peer-reviewed journals as Physical Therapy Journal, Rehabilitation Oncology, Breast Cancer: Targets and Therapy, Physical Therapy Reviews, Physiotherapy Theory and Practice and Cancer Nursing.

Mary Insana Fisher PT, PhD, Board certified Clinical Orthopedic Specialist and Certified Lymphedema Therapist, is an associate professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Dayton. She graduated from Boston University with a Master of Science in Physical Therapy, and earned her PhD in Rehabilitation Science from the University of Kentucky. With over 25 years of clinical practice experience, she serves on the Premier Health Oncology Committee and is Senior Editor of Rehabilitation Oncology. Dr. Fisher has been teaching physical therapy over 20 years, and her current research interest focuses on functional return, cancer-related fatigue, and quality of life among those treated for cancer, as well as outcomes measurement for oncology rehabilitation. A national and international presenter, she has published in such peer-reviewed journals as Rehabilitation Oncology, the Journal of Women’s Health Physical Therapy, The Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies, and Topics in Geriatric Rehabilitation.

From Science to Clinical Practice: A Paradigm Shift from Management- to Recovery-based Rehabilitation for Adults and Pediatrics Post-SCI - Presented by Andrea L. Behrman, PT, PhD, FAPTA In this course, Dr. Behrman will trace past and current clinical assumptions as the foundation for management-based rehabilitation post-SCI in comparison to recent scientific evidence guiding the development of recovery-based therapies. While still emerging, a paradigm shift in neurorehabilitation based on activity-dependent plasticity and the neurobiology of postural and locomotor control will be discussed.

Principles underlying the clinical application of recovery-based therapies will be identified. Two outcome measures, the Neuromuscular Recovery Scale (adult and pediatric) and the Segmental Assessment of Trunk Control (pediatric) will be introduced as recovery-based measures examining neuromuscular capacity while disallowing behavioural- and device-based compensation. Clinical and research examples will provide the context for illustration and implementation of the paradigm-shift and its impact on neuromuscular capacity, health, and quality of life for individuals with SCI.

Andrea L. Behrman, PT, PhD, FAPTA is Professor at the University of Louisville, Kosair Charities Endowed Chair in Pediatric Neurorecovery, Department of Neurosurgery, Kentucky Spinal Cord Injury Research Center, Louisville, KY. Dr. Behrman is the Director of the Kosair Charities Center for Pediatric NeuroRecovery providing activity-based therapies to promote recovery from neurologic injury in children and conducting research to inform clinical practice. She also is a Co-Director of the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation NeuroRecovery Network that provides standardized activity-based therapies for individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) at six adult rehabilitation centers in the United States and two pediatric sites. As a physical therapist, her research focuses on developing therapeutic interventions promoting recovery after SCI in children and adults using principles of activity-dependent plasticity and an understanding of the neurobiology of motor control and walking. She partners with basic scientists as a collaborative team conducting bidirectional translational research from bench to bedside to playground/park bench and back. She is a Fellow of the APTA (2009) and recipient of the Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy Research Award (2006), the Maley Lectureship APTA (2014), and the Anne-Shumway Cook Lectureship (2017). Dr. Behrman received a B.S. in Biology from Furman University, an M.S. in Physical Therapy from Duke University and a Ph.D. in Motor Control and Learning from the University of Florida.

How to Speak To and About Your Patients - Presented by Kate Schwartzkopf-Phifer, DPT, PhD, OCS, CSCS Have you ever said something dumb to a patient, and wished you could take it back immediately? Sure, we all have. I’ll tell you what’s worse though—saying something that is offensive….and having no clue. It happens to the best of us, and it usually occurs when we’re trying to say something kind. In this course, we’ll talk about the pros and cons of people first language, some well-intentioned comments that are actually super offensive, and some ways to prevent you from being such an a**. Spoiler alert: there will be some explicit language.

Session Descriptions Kate Schwartzkopf-Phifer, DPT, PhD, OCS, CSCS is an assistant professor in the DPT program at the University of Evansville. She received her Bachelor and Master of Physical Therapy degrees from the University of Evansville and her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Regis University. She completed an orthopedic residency through Evidence in Motion and is a board certified clinical specialist in orthopedics through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties. She recently completed her PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Kentucky, with specialization in motor control. Her research interests are in injury prediction and prevention, and performance in athletes.

Neurodynamic Testing and Treatment: A Manual Physical Therapist’s Perspective - Presented by Norman W. Ayotte, PT, DSc, Cert. MDT, OCS, FAAOMPT The nervous system is complex and its interaction with the body and its effects upon it can be both subtle and profound. During this course, we will explore the current evidence relating to neurodynamic testing and treatment and define the role that it plays in selected musculoskeletal conditions. Neurodynamic tests are a part of the clinician’s tool bag, however, they are not utilized frequently during the examination process leading to omission of key findings that will better direct treatment. Neurodynamic testing such as upper limb tension, straight leg raise, prone knee bend and slump tests will be practiced during this course. During lab, we will practice common evaluation and treatment techniques related to neuro-mobilization and manual therapy.

Norman W. Ayotte, PT, DSc, Cert. MDT, OCS, FAAOMPT graduated from the US Army-Baylor University Physical Therapy Program in 1999 with his Masters Degree. In 2009, he graduated from the US Army-Baylor University Post Professional Doctorate Program in Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy with his Doctorate of Science in Physical Therapy. He is a board certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist from the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties, Certified in Mechanical Diagnosis and Treatment (McKenzie Method) and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists. He is a US Army veteran with over 20 years of direct access experience who served in a variety of settings from Assistant Director of the USMA Sports Physical Therapy Residency to Director of Rehabilitation Services. He is an assistant professor at Bellarmine University with primary teaching responsibilities in Anatomy, Musculoskeletal Care and Biophysical Agents. His research interests include injury prevention in sports and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions of the lower extremity.

Splish Splash… Not Just Taking a Bath: An Introduction to Aquatic Therapy - Presented by Beth Ennis, PT, EdD, PCS & Megan Danzl, DPT, PhD This 3-hour course will be held at the Aquatic Therapy Center at the Home of the Innocents (https://www.homeoftheinnocents.org/aquatictherapy-center/) and should be considered an overview of using water as a medium for physical therapy. The properties of water and principles of aquatic therapy will be introduced. Methods for accessing aquatic environments, equipment needs, and reimbursement considerations will be covered. A systems-based approach (including cardiovascular/pulmonary, musculoskeletal, and neuromuscular systems) will frame discussion and demonstrations and include sample indications, precautions, and contraindications. Participants will engage in discussions and hands-on in-pool practice of example interventions that address limitations in body structure and function as well as activities, including respiration, pain, range of motion, strength, balance, and gait. Using aquatics to increase participation in clients with disabilities will also be discussed. Aquatic therapy resources (articles, texts, continuing education opportunities) will be suggested for participants to continue to deepen their understanding and skills in aquatic therapy beyond this session.

Session Descriptions Beth Ennis, PT, EdD, PCS received her BA in Behavioral Science from Pomona College, her MSPT from Boston University and her EdD in Leadership from Spalding University. She is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association, with memberships in multiple sections and academies, including Aquatics. She is Associate Professor and Associate Chair of PT at Bellarmine University, and co-owner of a private practice with emphasis on early intervention, assistive technology and aquatics. Dr. Ennis coordinates the capstone projects for the DPT students, and facilitated projects relating to aquatic therapy for the last 10 years. She co-instructed the aquatics elective at Bellarmine and has presented multiple 2hour presentations on the use of Aquatics at Combined Sections meetings since 2012. Dr. Ennis has three articles in print in the Journal of Aquatic Physical Therapy, the last co-authored with Dr. Danzl in press currently. Dr. Ennis is the President of the Kentucky Physical Therapy Association.

Megan Danzl, DPT, PhD earned a doctorate in physical therapy (Bellarmine University), a PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences (University of Kentucky), and board certification in neurologic specialization.

She is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine. She is an Associate Professor and Assistant Chair in the PT program at Bellarmine University and practices clinically in acute care and inpatient rehabilitation settings. She is course director for the adult neurological rehabilitation course and is core faculty in neurology. She serves as the Education and Research Coordinator for the Bellarmine University and Norton Healthcare neurologic PT residency. She has co-taught “Aquatics Across the Lifespan”, an elective in the PT program. She co-presented “Aquatic Neurorehabilitation Across the Lifespan”, a 2-hour educational session, at the Combined Sections Meeting in 2016 and is co-author for a case series in press for the Journal of Aquatic Physical Therapy.

Continuing the Momentum of Rehabilitation Services Transition to Population Health Management and Value: Is There a Prescient Opportunity for Ambulatory (Outpatient) Physical Therapy? - Presented by Ed Dobrzykowski, PT, DPT, ATC, MHS & Danae Brown, DPT, MBA (candidate) The healthcare financing and delivery systems continue to evolve. Led primarily by CMS (government payers), there continues to be refinements of regulatory actions and systems for care delivery related to targeting improvements in quality, overall population health, and reductions in cost of providers and institutions. Looking forward, we suggest that the future value of physical therapy ambulatory practice will grow incrementally beyond the immediate physical therapy referral and diagnosis, to specific medical problems identified during the evaluation that limit patient health. For example, patients referred for physical therapy following their total knee arthroplasty may present with a medical history of diabetes, obesity, or osteoarthritis. The purpose of a physical therapy plan of care and treatment will evolve to include interventions for managing one or more of these patient’s healthcare conditions. Justification will include bundled payments and avoidance of future healthcare expense as payment models evolve. This ninety-minute presentation will provide updates on the CMS driven payment transitions to value and managing population health; discuss evaluations that include patient overall health review; include interventions germane to current patient health, and address barriers to clinical practice inclusion and patient behavioral changes.

Ed Dobrzykowski, PT, DPT, ATC, MHS is a Rehabilitation Services Consultant and Educator, with specific emphasis on acute/inpatient services care delivery, staffing models, post-acute patient transitions, work flows, productivity/efficiency measurement, and leadership and management skill development. Previously, he was Director of Rehabilitation Services, St. Elizabeth Healthcare in Edgewood KY where he managed occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech pathology, audiology, and EMG in acute care, skilled nursing, and outpatient services. Dr. Dobrzykowski has over thirty years’ experience in management positions in not-for-profit and for-profit organizations.

Active in the APTA and KPTA, he has held multiple elected and appointed roles, serving presently as Publications Chair of HPA The Catalyst. He began a term on the Kentucky Licensing Board of Physical Therapy in 2018.

Session Descriptions Danae Brown, DPT, MBA (candidate) is currently outpatient Physical Therapist at St. Elizabeth Healthcare in Florence, KY. Her clinical emphasis is in orthopedic and sports physical therapy. Dr. Brown is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati’s DPT program and is an MBA candidate at Thomas More College. In her 7 years as a Physical Therapist, she has practiced in inpatient, outpatient, and skilled nursing settings. She serves on several committees for St. Elizabeth Healthcare: Evidence Based Practice Team, Operations Improvement Team, Outpatient Documentation Committee, Best Practices Spinal Rehab Committee, and the Orthopedic Institute. Dr. Brown is an active member of the APTA.

PTA Leadership: Beyond Patient Care - Presented by Sean Bagbey, PTA, MHA, ATC, CIRS, Rochelle Hawkins, PTA, & Stephanie Taylor, PTA, MAE During this session, we will look at the ability to serve the profession and our patients by looking at ways that PTAs can build leadership skills and experience to better our clinics, the profession, and the patient experience. The participants will leave with an understanding of the personal and interpersonal areas that need to be part of the conversation to improve our profession, our patients and our communities that we serve. At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to: understand the difference between EQ and IQ and how that plays a role in leadership; identify areas of internal bias and weakness and how to develop a plan to address these areas; and identify and explain the different levels of trust and the impact that has on relationships.

Sean Bagbey, PTA, MHA, ATC, CIRS, a native of Evansville, IN, graduated from the University of Evansville in 2002 with his Bachelors in Athletic Training, Exercise Science, and Associates in Physical Therapy Assistance. Following graduation, he completed his Masters in Health Service Administration from the University of Southern Indiana. He is also a Certified Industrial Rehabilitation Specialist. Sean is the COO for Rehabilitation & Performance Institute. He is certified in the Functional Movement Systems, the Selective Functional Movement Assessment, Y-balance Testing, Case Management, Home Modification Design, and Industrial Rehabilitation. He holds advanced proficiency in Musculoskeletal and Geriatrics from the American Physical Therapy Association, and the Advance Proficiency Pathway in Orthopedics. Sean has been an active member serving in several roles within the American Physical Therapy Association. He has been active on a state and national level primarily involved in advocacy for the patient. He currently serves in a nationally elected position as a Delegate to the PTA Caucus.

Rochelle Hawkins, PTA has 25 years of experience in a hospital based setting. Rochelle started out as a therapy aide in an outpatient clinic and then transitioned to inpatient. She graduated from the Physical Therapist Assistant Program at the University of Indianapolis in 1998. She worked for 15 years on the Stroke Team at Hook Rehabilitation Center. In 2008, Rochelle transitioned into a compliance role, learning all about CMS regulations.

Rochelle now works full time as the Revenue Cycle Liaison for the Physical Therapy and Rehab Department at Community Health Network. In addition, Rochelle was elected to serve as the INAPTA PTA Caucus Representative. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family and they enjoy all sorts of outdoor activities.

Session Descriptions Stephanie Taylor, PTA, MAE has been a PTA for 21 years. She started her career working in the inpatient setting, followed by acute rehabilitation, and later outpatient sports medicine, where she obtained her Aquatic Therapy certification. She transitioned from the clinic in 2005 to teach part-time at the Madisonville Community College (MCC) PTA program where she has been a faculty member ever since. Stephanie is a full-time professor for the MCC PTA Program and earned Advanced Proficiency for the Physical Therapist Assistant in Education Physical Therapy in 2013. Her leadership roles include currently serving as the PTA Coordinator for the past 7 years and the MCC Allied Health Division Chair for 3 years. On a state level, she served as the KPTA membership chair for 2 years and was recently elected as the Kentucky Physical Therapy Association PTA Caucus Representative starting her 2-year term in January 2018.

Budgeting, Financial Planning, and Student Loan Repayment Options This course is intended for those with the financial burden of student loan debt or living paycheck to paycheck with no end in sight. Learn more about the physical therapy profession salaries per setting and job growth outlook, student loan crisis in the US, and recent legislation that impacts student loans. Hear stories of success and failure - course participants will be inspired to overcome their own financial challenges...Create a budget. Construct a plan for retirement. Learn to live with financial purpose. In addition, learners will locate resources for student loan repayment options, discuss student loan repayment strategies, discuss basic financial planning and budgeting concepts, and describe the fundamentals of investing.

Charlie Workman, PT, MSPT, MBA completed his undergraduate work at Asbury University with Bachelors in Science then received his Masters in Physical Therapy from University of Kentucky in 2000.

He continued his education completing Masters in Business Administration from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2012. Charlie currently serves as Assistant Director for Inpatient and Outpatient Therapy Services at Baptist Health in Lexington and current Vice President for KPTA. Prior experience includes Inpatient and Outpatient Management at Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital in Lexington KY. Clinical Research initiatives include studies in post-acute care discharge planning for orthopedic elective procedures and predictor models for discharge placement. His special interests include Finance Planning, Budgeting, and Student Loan Debt Repayment options speaking to graduating PT student groups annually for enhancing personal finance strategies.

ACL Reconstruction: How Well Do We Really Do? - Presented by Tony Brosky, PT, DHS, SCS & Terry Malone, PT, EdD, FAPTA This session will delineate the actual clinical outcomes following ACL reconstruction. It will describe the impact and resultant joint changes following reconstruction. A review of evidence-based rehabilitation recommendations will be provided to include recent ACL reconstruction literature references. The use of ACL injury prevention programs will be outlined; as well as a look into the future on what ACL reconstruction “process” will become.

Tony Brosky, PT, DHS, SCS is a physical therapist who holds a Master’s Degree in Orthopedic Physical Therapy and also a Doctorate in Health Science. Dr. Brosky is a Sport Certified Specialist (SCS) and serves as the Assistant Dean of the Lansing School of Nursing and Health Sciences at Bellarmine University. He serves as a KPTA delegate to APTA’s House of Delegates as well as in many other volunteer roles within both KPTA & APTA. Dr. Brosky is the 2014 recipient of KPTA’s Outstanding Physical Therapist Service Award.

Session Descriptions Terry Malone, PT, EdD, FAPTA received his EdD and MSPT from Duke University in North Carolina and his BA from Bluffton College in Ohio. Dr. Malone served as the initial Sports PT and was the Coordinator of the Sports Medicine Clinic at Duke. He served as the initial Chairman of the Sports Specialization Council of the APTA and has been liaison to the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and is a member of that organization.Dr. Malone was the initial chair and dean of the Krannert School of PT at the University of Indianapolis. He served as the Physical Therapy Program Director at UK 1993-2006 and is now a full professor.

Women's Pelvic Health: Incontinence and Pelvic Organ Prolapse - Presented by Susan Dunn, PT & Melissa McElroy, DPT, WCS This class will review physical therapy treatment for two of the most commonly treated diagnoses in pelvic health: incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. This class will be pertinent to all therapists even if they are not Pelvic Health Clinicians given that, on average, 50% of all patient populations over the age of 50 experience these symptoms. Those attending will have a good understanding of precautions and contraindications in order to guide their POC so as not to cause or exacerbate symptoms. Additional insight will be given for the clinicians who are already working in the pelvic health specialization treating these diagnoses. This course will include a review of pertinent anatomy, evaluation and treatment strategies, review importance of diaphragm/transversus abdominus/pelvic floor muscle synergy in the treatment of incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse and two case studies reflective of two age groups.

Susan Dunn, PT earned her Physical Therapy degree from the University of Louisville and holds a bachelors degree from Northern Kentucky University and a masters from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. She has been practicing in the Louisville area since 1997. In addition to owning her own practice since 2001, Susan is an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), Kentucky Physical Therapy Association, the APTA Women’s Health Section, APTA Private Practice Section, International Pelvic Pain Society, International Continence Society, and the International Children’s Continence Society. Susan has spent her entire career focusing on research and clinical practice in the areas of pelvic health for women, men and children and women’s health issues.

This coupled with a specialization in spine has allowed her to grow her clinical skills to become a recognized leader in the Greater Louisville area for the diagnosis and treatment of these conditions.

Melissa McElroy, DPT, WCS began her college studies at Thomas More College in Northern Kentucky before transferring to Bellarmine University where she earned a bachelors in Health Science in 2005.

Melissa went on to earn a doctorate of Physical Therapy at Bellarmine University in 2007. She has had the opportunity to work in various settings across the country including pediatrics and wound care, but returned to Louisville in 2010 to focus on her specialization in pelvic health treating male and female adult patient populations. In 2015 Melissa earned her Women’s Health Specialist (WCS) Board certification and is committed to furthering the Pelvic Health aspect of Physical Therapy practice.

Melissa is a member of the Kentucky Physical Therapy Association, the American Physical Therapy Association, as well as the National Women’s Health Section. Melissa is very involved with community education through lectures and volunteer work, with a particular interest in prenatal and postpartum education as well as male and female pelvic pain.

Additional Programming Forum: The New Payment Model for SNFs - Presented by Robert Latz, PT, DPT, CHCIO; Liz Barlow, BSN, RN, CRRN, RAC-CT, DNS-CT & Glenda Mack, PT, MSPT, MBA, CLT The “Final Rule” for SNF settings will be available by August 31, 2018. This means attendees of this September 22 session will learn the latest news from CMS related to their recently proposed new payment model called PDPM (Patient Driven Payment Model). This session will provide Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants with the knowledge and tools to prepare for the proposed October 1, 2019 implementation of PDPM. As a reminder, PDPM is a payment model proposed by CMS for all patients under the Part A payer in a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF). PDPM is designed to correlate the patients’ conditions and care needs rather than the volume of services provided.

This is a shift in the way payment is currently provided in these settings and this may have a huge impact on payment for therapy services.

In short, the current SNF RUGs model of payment is going away, and this new model is intended as a replacement. Anyone practicing (or interested in practicing) in a SNF will benefit from understanding this new payment model and the quality measures in place to support the model.

Liz Barlow, BSN, RN, CRRN, RAC-CT, DNS-CT is a Certified Rehab Nurse with over 25 years in Long Term Care. She started her nursing career in cardiac care and acute care rehab and soon found out that post acute care was her passion. She has worked in a variety of roles with LTC, including Director of Case Management, National Director of Quality, and from a therapy perspective has worked as a Rehab Director, Vice President of Clinical Services, and currently serves as Senior Director of Quality for RehabCare. Her current role involves leading a team of therapists who educate and train on quality outcomes and care throughout the country in SNF therapy departments. Liz has presented at many professional organization conferences on LTC nursing and therapy topics and has recently co-authored a book on therapy and nursing collaboration. She currently serves on the Kentucky Board for Multiple Sclerosis and just completed a term with Western Kentucky University Health and Human Services Board of Stakeholders.

Glenda Mack, PT, MSPT, MBA, CLT is Division Vice President of Clinical Operations for Kindred Hospital Rehabilitation Services. Previously, Glenda has served in numerous operational and clinical capacities with Kindred Healthcare, and has been with the company since 1997. Glenda has achieved expertise throughout her career by becoming a Certified Wound Specialist and Certified Lymphedema Therapist. She also has been a clinical leader in the industry supporting aggressive rehabilitation care for patients across post acute care. Additionally, she has been an advocate for seniors and healthcare facilities for years to help facilitate appropriate payment for rehabilitation services. Glenda has bachelor’s degrees from Trevecca Nazarene University and the University of Kentucky, and a master’s degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Kentucky and an MBA from the University of Louisville.
