Because the overuse of opioids for the treatment of chronic pain has led to a national public health epidemic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends non-drug approaches (such as physical therapy) over long-term or high-dosage use of addictive prescription painkillers. During this educational seminar, participants will learn what pain scenarios are appropriate for physical therapy intervention and why they should be reimbursed by insurance. Scenarios will also include case studies showing the average cost of treatment with and without physical therapy. Using evidence-based research, the presenters will show how incorporating physical therapy into treatment plans can decrease overall healthcare costs.

Program Objectives Discuss the circumstances that could cause an athlete to be vulnerable to substance abuse. Discuss the relationship between opioid use and the risk of developing hyperalgesia. Articulate the definitions of addiction, misuse, and dependence as described in the literature Verbalize past use of virtual reality as it relates to chronic pain treatment and medical treatments. Identify the cost and effects of the opioid crisis in general and specifically on treatment of low back pain in Kentucky. Identify common musculoskeletal conditions that physical therapy should be utilizing as a primary intervention. All nurse participants per regulation must attend the entire session and complete the evaluation form to complete the expectations for the continuing education credit.
