WELCOME TO COBB COUNTY

The Acworth Business Association is looking forward to a fantastic year in 2023. We have made some changes for this upcoming year that we hope will help simplify and make it easier to join the ABA. The goal is to make participation easy so that you can get the most out of being a part of this association. We strive to minimize the ‘red tape’ and create environments that are conducive to making connections and getting business done so we can all grow, thrive and give back to others. This year, we have changed the membership packages as one way to help reach that goal. The Presidential Package is still by far the best value for your dollar by including luncheons and sponsorship at all over our events all in one package at an extreme discount.

If the Presidential package doesn’t help you meet your business goals, then my suggestion is to purchase one of the luncheon packages. These packages include nine luncheons at a reduced rate and your membership dues at a discount and allows you to simply RSVP instead of having to pay each time. You can purchase the regular monthly luncheon or the Women’s Networking Luncheon package.

Don’t forget to go ahead and put our regular monthly events on your calendar so you don’t miss any chances to connect with others.

Here are the events:

• Luncheon - 1st Thursday – 11:30am @ the Acworth Community Center

 Enjoy some great food, updates on the community, and a guest speaker

• Morning JOLT - 2nd and 4th Tuesday – 7:45am @ the Cowan Historic Mill

 An amazing platform to let others know what you do and what makes a great referral to you. Lots of businesses have launched from this group!

• Alive After Five - 2nd Thursday – 5:30pm @ (check the ABA calendar online for rotating venues)

 Come enjoy some food and drinks and connect with other business professionals

• Women’s Business Luncheon – 4th Thursday – 11:30am @ (check the ABA calendar online for rotating venues)

 Ladies only business networking event

I am looking forward to getting to know all of our members better this year. I am challenging myself as well as all of the ABA to reach further than they have before, to learn new things and to facilitate connections for themselves and others.

Let’s a have great year of success and growth!

Iam honored to be serving as the 2023 Kennesaw Business Association president. I have been involved with the KBA for more than two decades. I have watched it become a strong, influential organization that takes great pride in giving back to the community. Through events such as the Big Shanty Festival and Taste of Kennesaw, we are able to fund over 20 scholarships for deserving high school students each year and give back to numerous local charitable organizations. This year, we are growing in new ways. We are introducing a Young Professionals group to help the next generation start off strong. Young Professionals under the age of 35 can purchase an individual membership for only $50. This membership includes one free lunch, a free YP only monthly networking event, a mentorship program, and access to over 50 other networking events a year!

2023

This year in the KBA, we are “Choosing to be Happy”. That means we, not just as individuals, but as business owners, will focus on being intentional with our time, work commitments, and relationships. That is reflected in our programs and services offered to our members this year. Please be my guest at one of our monthly luncheons, held the second Tuesday of each month. For more information on all of our events and networking opportunities, please visit our website: https://kennesawbusiness.org/

s president of the 2023 Marietta Business Association president, I plan to focus on growth and building stronger relationships with our members and in our community. My theme for this year is “Perseverance”. I chose this theme for several reasons, but the most important being that facing challenges is where the magic happens. Persevering through difficulty is when we grow and learn the most, not only about our work or career, but about ourselves and what we are really capable of. When you join the MBA, you get not just an outstanding networking group, but a built in support group that cheers you on and helps you persevere.

To that end, we have started an exciting new program, our Business Development Series. This is a quarterly luncheon featuring guest speakers aimed at helping you grow your business.

Please consider joining us at this, or any of our events, such as one of our FREE after hours networking events (5-7pm last Thursday of the month at various locations), or be my guest to our monthly luncheon (last Monday of the month at the Foxglove). For more information on any of these events, please visit our website: https://www.mariettabusiness.org/

Best, Michelle Faucher

“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.”

As president of the West Cobb Business Association in 2023, I look forward to promoting the growth and enrichment of our community and small businesses by providing opportunities for sharing information, networking, and education. It is a perfect time to take advantage of the networking power of the local business associations to boost brand presence, make those critical connections, and establish yourself and your company as a reliable, trustworthy business partner in the community.

As members of the West Cobb Business Association, it is our mission to assist you in growing your business and increasing brand awareness among our fellows and within the community; by fostering a sense of community among its members, improving the business climate for its members by monitoring state and agency actions that impact its members, providing a forum for dialogue between its members and opinion leaders, other interest groups, and the general public; and raising public awareness of its members’ contributions to the economic, physical, and social vitality of the West Cobb community.

We achieved that goal over the last year through programs and events. The WCBA is dedicated to developing and strengthening relationships between the community, local merchants, and our cities.

Thank you for continuing to support the WCBA. We are excited to have our most successful year yet! I’d like to encourage you to participate actively in WCBA events. I am excited to share with you the plans we already have in the works. One thing is certain: the WCBA has an outstanding board of directors who work well together.

If you live or work in Acworth, Dallas, Hiram, Kennesaw, Marietta, or Powder Springs, the West Cobb Business Association is a great place for you to belong, be active, and be known.

We welcome you to join us!

THE COBB LIFE COBB’S: DOWNTOWN DESTINATIONS

There are a number of distinct cities and communities whose unique offerings make Cobb the vibrant county it is today. And in the heart of each of these communities are downtown sweet spots that offer local charms, hangouts, shops, dining and more. While Marietta and Kennesaw’s historic downtown districts often draw the most local and tourist attention, Smyrna, Powder Springs and Acworth have all recently added to their already deep offerings. Read on for some of each community’s recent additions.

The invigoration and transformation of Powder Springs’ downtown has been a strong focus for several years, as both public and private development is expected to be completed or continued in 2022. A new city hall complex is expected to start construction this year, alongside nearly 5,000 sq. ft. of commercial space for retail, restaurant spaces, and 220+ apartments. The city is also partnering with California Skateparks to design and build a new 20,000 sq. ft. competition skatepark. With these new additions, and the previous year’s opening of Thurman Springs Park and its Hardy Family Automotive Amphitheater, Powder Springs has prepared a full slate of community-wide events for 2022 and beyond. Visit www.cityofpowdersprings.org for more information.

Visiting Smyrna, you’ll notice the bright yellow blooms of the jonquil, the city’s namesake, alongside the numerous shops and recreational offerings. The city has launched an exciting transformation of Smyrna Market Village, an active downtown center with retail stores, restaurants, residences, two parks, a community center, city hall, and nearby neighbor¬hoods. The plan includes an interactive green space, a parking facility, and a Stillfire Brewing location. Nearby, Contender Esports at Cumberland Crossing provides a home for the gaming community by offering equipment and structure for leagues, tournaments, youth academies, and more.

The centerpiece of the city is the Smyrna Market Village, an active downtown center with retail offerings, restaurants, residences, two parks, a community center, city hall, and nearby neighborhoods. New this year, Contender Esports at Cumberland Crossing provides a home for the gaming community by offering equipment and structure for leagues, tournaments, youth academies, and more. Earlier this year, Smyrna unveiled its newest quality of life addition at Jonquil Park, a modern, open-air wellness center “Fitness Court” with a supporting mobile app. Learn more at www.smyrnaga.gov.

Known as the Lake City, Acworth has spent recent years focused on transforming, revitalizing, and expanding its historic downtown. Today, visitors and citizens alike enjoy the new Parkside District, which includes 120acre Logan Farm Park and the Acworth Community Center. On the edge of the park at Taylor and Cherokee streets is The Art House, home to a growing community for local artists, offering exhibits and classes. THE BATTERY ATLANTA UPDATE

Located in the fastest-growing area in Cobb County, The Battery Atlanta is a 365-day destination in the heart of Cumberland offering a mix of modern residential options, more than 400,000 square feet of retail space, entertainment venues, and restaurant concepts from Atlanta’s culinary elite. Post-pandemic, The Battery is thriving and gearing up to offer visitors even more in 2023 and beyond.

The tallest building in The Battery (and the county!), TK Elevator’s Innovation and Qualification Center, recently unveiled two stunning event spaces inside the 420-foot-tall tower: The Elevation Room and The Horizon Ballroom. The Elevation Room, located on the tower’s 26th and 27th floors, is a two-story event space featuring striking floor-to-ceiling windows with panoramic views of Downtown Atlanta, Kennesaw Mountain, and a clear view inside Truist Park. The Horizon Ballroom, located on the fourth floor, blends modern industrial sophistication with inspirational elegance, and is suited for awards banquets or corporate functions. For more information on how to book, connect with the events team at specialevents@ braves.com.

Also in 2022, the Braves Development Company welcomed modern eatery Cultivate Food & Coffee and acclaimed yoga studio YogaSix to The Battery.

These new additions joined organic food, fine wine and spirits destination Savi Provisions and neighborhood pub Mac McGee to The Battery’s diverse lineup.

On the horizon, social gaming hotspot Battle & Brew has built out a new space. Battle & Brew allows guests to sit side by side with friends while playing the best games Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox, PC or tabletop have to offer.

While The Battery continues to land high-quality entertainment and dining options, it also continues to be a hotbed for big business. Code42, an American cybersecurity software company specializing in insider risk management, recently opened an office at Three Ballpark Center as part of the company’s continued growth and expansion. Additionally, Southwire, one of North America’s leading wire and cable producers signed a deal for roughly 23,000 sq. ft. of office and multipurpose space, while Trust Financial, the new 250,000 sq. ft. national headquarters of Truist Securities, is set to begin construction in the second half of 2022.

As new concepts continue to flock to the area, The Battery’s momentum continues to set the pace for Cumberland and Cobb County as a whole. For a full list of offerings, plus an upcoming events calendar, visit www.batteryatl.com.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

COBB’S CHANGE AGENTS COMMUNITY IMPROVEMENT DISTRICTS

As early as the 1980s, leaders of Cobb County implement¬ed the Community Improvement District (CID) concept to address transportation issues in key economic corridors of the county. CIDs involve participants who voluntarily increase their prop¬erty taxes in order to stimulate enhancements, such as aesthetic improvements, civic promotion, and long-term property value increases. Here’s a look at the results of that approach in three key areas of Cobb.

CUMBERLAND CID

The Cumberland Community Improvement District (CID) is one of the most exciting places in the Atlanta region. Today, Cumberland has a $23.6 billion annual economic impact on Georgia’s economy, 3,300 businesses, and 30,000 diverse residents. What previously was a nine-to-five business district is now a cultural and entertainment hub that translates into a rich quality of life and sustainable growth and development for years to come.

With the District being Atlanta’s 5th largest employment center, the Cumberland CID is working to connect people to jobs and community assets through innovative transportation solutions. Currently in progress is the Cumberland Sweep, a three-mile multimodal corridor that will have dedicated walking and biking lanes and an autonomous shuttle system, making travel around Cumberland quick and efficient.

In partnership with the CRNRA, the Cumberland CID is working to rehabilitate and enhance the Paces Mill/Palisades Unit. Established in 1978, plans include protecting the park from erosion by integrating a series of bioswales to filter stormwater runoff before it enters

the river. A new visitor information center, improved parking, and greater access to the Chattahoochee River are just some of the major enhancements that will improve the visitor experience.

In Spring 2023, the Cumberland CID plans to cut the ribbon on the Akers Mill Ramp. The Ramp will be a new access point for the popular I-75 Northwest Express Lanes System at Akers Mill Road and will be the newest of 12 access points for the lanes. The Akers Mill Ramp will serve six class A office towers nearby and provide a critical access point to thousands of residents, businesses, and visitors in the region. cumberlandtrails.org

TOWN CENTER CID

Over two decades Town Center CID has built a proud legacy of advancing projects that matter, leading strategically to help make Town Center Community a vibrant place to grow a business, raise a family, shop and work, earn a degree, and enjoy the outdoors.

Town Center CID has innovated throughout its history to meet the needs of the community, helping deliver transformational projects that have made significant transportation, safety, and traffic improvements, like the Skip Spann Connector, Big Shanty Connector and widening, South Barrett Reliever, and Noonday Creek Trail. Working with its business, civic and government partners, the CID identifies pivotal projects that enhance connectivity, health, and economic prosperity. These projects help more parents and students get home for dinner, reduce travel time for the district’s workforce, and expand access to parks and trails.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

The district has seen the growth of very diverse assets. What used to be a bourgeoning suburban retail area is now home to a variety of economic engines and sectors - manufacturing, industrial, freight and logistics, fin-tech, an international airport, global and corporate headquarters, in addition to the traditional retail and commerce. Town Center is also home to Kennesaw State University, the state’s second largest university with more than 43,000 students. Residents are choosing the district because of its proximity, connectivity and access to greenspace, parks and trails.

“Town Center is an ideal place to live, work, and play. Together with our partners and community we are imagining a bright future for Town Center, Cobb County and the region as a whole,” said Tracy Styf, executive director of the Town Center CID. towncentercid.com

GATEWAY MARIETTA CID

Established in 2014 by commercial property owners for the purposes of improving local infrastructure and public safety, Gateway Marietta CID is comprised of 73 commercial parcels. Estimated to generate over $500,000 in revenue for 2023, GMCID continues to work closely with property owners, City of Marietta, and other stakeholders to enhance the Franklin Gateway area. With thriving businesses, world-class sports and entertainment, GMCID is a strong business community working together to affect positive change. GMCID is home to abundant opportunities and 21st century technology. As one of the first CIDs to install mobile license plate readers, we continue our efforts with the City of Marietta in partnering to positively impact public safety efforts.

As GMCID has made improvements through the years, the goal has been to improve the perception of the area. Capitalizing on the 2019 Corridor Project along South Marietta and Delk Road, GMCID is beginning the Delk Road Corridor Enhancement Project. Incorporating recommendations from the recently completed Atlanta Regional Commission-funded study, GMCID has plans for enhancements to the Delk Road Corridor for more impactful landscaping as well as implementing identified creative placemaking opportunities. The work being done is making a visible difference and enhances the welcoming feel of the community. gatewaymarietta.org

COBB COUNTY A WINNING BUSINESS DESTINATION

ith The Atlanta Braves, Papa John’s, TK Elevator, The Home Depot, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company, calling Cobb County home, Cobb County is one of the most attractive sites in the Southeast for corporate expansions and relocations. The county’s impressive number of economic development assets, including its low cost of living, connectivity, favorable tax rates, fiscally sound government, business-friendly reputation and high quality of life led to 13 business recruitments, 17 expansions, 3,414 new or retained jobs, and over $317.7M in new investment in 2021.

Last year, SelectCobb welcomed Chicken Salad Chick’s headquarters, Vanderlande North American headquarters, fin tech company Relay Payments, and automated warehousing and distribution solutions leader, KNAPP expanded its North American headquarters.

In the last nine months, HR staffing company Soliant announced an expansion with a new office in Cumberland. Lockheed Martin announced that Cobb’s Marietta Plant will be one of two LMXT strategic tanker aircraft manufacturing locations. Other notable expansions include A.G. Rhodes, NPSG Global, and flavor and scent manufacturer Arylessence.

Welcome to Braves Country

Since 2014, Cobb County has been the proud home of the 2021 World Series Champions the Atlanta Braves, Truist Park, and The Battery Atlanta. What was once an undeveloped parcel is now an economic driver for the county that welcomed approximately 9 million fans and visitors last year and employs over 5,500 people in the hospitality, sports, entertainment and retail industries.

“The Atlanta Braves have been fortunate to work closely with many individuals form Cobb County who recognized and valued the long-

term economic impact and benefits our organization will bring to the community for decades,” said Mike Plant, President & CEO of Braves Development Company. “The Cobb Chamber leadership was at the center of many of these initiatives. We appreciate their vision and commitment to help us create this unique destination in Cobb County, our new home.”

By 2024, The Battery Atlanta will be home to four Fortune 500 companies – Truist Securities, Comcast, Truist, Papa Johns and TK Elevator.

Where Ambition is a Natural Resource

older possessed a bachelor’s degree or higher, considerably higher than the national average, 36 percent. The county’s workforce is built by its desirable educational assets, including K-12 magnet programs, two career academies, technical schools, colleges and universities, and continuing education and training programs.

A Community That Builds & Grows Together

SelectCobb and its partners are working and building together for a greater Cobb community. We share a vision to ignite passion, welcome innovation and to create healthy conditions for businesses to grow. This year, two major projects are coming to fruition thanks to our powerful partnerships, HatchBridge and the VECTR Center (Veterans Education Career Training Resource).

HatchBridge is a new business incubator open to all, located on the Kennesaw State University campus. This new offering uses the expertise and experience of Kennesaw State’s faculty through business incubator services and programming in-person and virtually through a six-month cohort model. HatchBridge’s virtual offerings will allow for information sharing, education, and collaboration through an online platform.

In 2019, the Cobb Chamber, SelectCobb and its partners advocated at the state to bring a second VECTR Center to Chattahoochee Technical College’s Marietta campus. The new center opened in October and is a veterans-focused center supporting students, active duty military, reservists, retirees and military family members through the transition into education and into careers. The Center features a community gathering space for veteran students, referral services for community members and educational support services. Additionally, representatives from a variety of veteran community support agencies will have use of meeting spaces in the Center.

This year as a new feature, we included data from the U.S. News & World Report Rankings. The U.S. News & World Report K-12 directory encompasses 102,449 preschools, elementary, middle school and high schools that you can search based on the state, district or city near you. The data on student diversity, teachers, counselors, test scores and district spending can help you find the right school for your child. Middle and elementary schools are ranked on their performance on state-required tests, graduation rate and how well they prepare their students for high school.

The rankings use the same methodology for all included grade levels. For each state, schools were assessed on their shares of students who were proficient or above proficient in their mathematics and reading/language arts state assessments. Half the formula was the results themselves; the other half was the results in the context of socioeconomic demographics. In other words, the top-ranked schools are all high achieving and have succeeded at educating all their students. The overall ranking score is out of 100.

Georgia high school students must earn at least 23 credits in various subjects to graduate. Students are assessed in English language arts, mathematics, science and social studies using the Georgia Milestones Assessment System. More information is available through the Georgia Department of Education at www.gadoe.org.

In a 2022 education ranking issue published by U.S. News & World Report, Cobb County high schools made the top 20 list of the best high schools in Georgia, and earned a place among the top 500 high schools in the nation. This is pretty impressive given that the U.S. News & World Report rankings include data on more than 24,000 public high schools in 50 states and the District of Columbia and over 414 high schools in Georgia. These 24,000 high schools were ranked on six factors based on performance on state assessments and how well they prepare students for college. Visit www.us.news.com/education/best-high-schools/georgia to learn more about this ranking and the methodology.

LEISURE & RECREATION

ENTERTAINMENT

As one of the biggest cities in the metro Atlanta area and the biggest of Cobb County, Marietta provides some of the best attractions and entertainment to be found in the area and even in the Southeast U.S. The best place to find entertainment in Marietta is downtown. The Marietta Welcome Center is a great place to stop first if visiting the community. The Center provides abundant information and also offers interesting tours, including the Historic Marietta Self Guided Walking/Driving Tour, the Marietta Pilgrimage Christmas Home Tour, and the Yellow Rose Carriage Service. Other tours in Marietta are the Ghosts of Marietta Tour, which is especially fun around Halloween, and the Historic Marietta Trolley tour.

There are also several museums which portray everything you need to know about the City and its history, with the Marietta Fire Museum, the Marietta Gone with the Wind Museum, Scarlett on the Square, the Marietta Museum of History, the Old Zion Baptist Church Heritage Museum and the Root House Museum.

PARKS & HISTORICAL LANDMARKS

Cobb County boasts some of the most pristine parks and scenic landscapes in Georgia. With dozens of parks ranging in size from small neighborhood playgrounds to vast forest areas full of trails and sports fields, there is more than enough space to play, relax or just enjoy the beauty of the county. The parks in the county provide numerous outdoor activities, from ball fields, recreational facilities, basketball and tennis courts, benches and grills to playgrounds, gazebos, gardens and dog-friendly locations. Some of the parks within Cobb reside along the Chattahoochee River, a National Recreation Area in Georgia. The river can be used for its relaxing beaches, kayaking, rafting or fishing. There are also many beaches along lakes as well, such as those found on Lake Acworth that offer volleyball courts and picnic pavilions.

Cobb County is also rich with history, which has been preserved through various museums, community centers, parks, and historic cemeteries. Because much

Marietta is also home to the Earl Smith Strand Theatre and the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art.

Probably one of the most unique and entertaining aspects of downtown Marietta is the Theatre in the Square.

For family fun, Cobb is home to Six Flags White Water Park. The park holds 50 attractions, with rides, one of the world’s tallest free-falls, a water park and constant special events. Obviously one of the biggest venues for entertainment in the Southeast, Six Flags provides a great time for any age.

of Cobb County was first settled around train depots, many museums honor the history of their city’s roots. Kennesaw holds the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History, while Smyrna contains the Trolley Line Park as well as the Smyrna Museum and Train Depot. You can also find many of the first settlers in the cities within the national cemeteries, such as the Marietta Confederate Cemetery or the Smyrna Memorial Cemetery.

For a complete lising of parks in the Cobb County, please see page 43.

Pitner Road Dog Park

2450 Pitner Road

Acworth

The Pitner Road Dog Park is comprised of two adjoining but separately-fenced play areas for offleash dogs with approximately 2 acres of space for larger and one acre of space for smaller dogs. The dog lots have both open-space and shady, wooded areas with benched seating for dog owners. Each area has dog water fountains and “poop-mit” stations providing bags for owners to pick up after their pets. A gravel access road and parking lot with 50 parking spaces.

A combination picnic shelter and restroom building (presently with four picnic tables) sits on a rise and overlooks the playground and dog lots. A multi-function playground for children ages 2 to 12 is between the picnic shelter and the dog lots and can be easily seen from the seating areas of both locations. For information, contact the Western District Zone office at (770) 528-8890.

Named Best Dog Park in Summer by Atlanta Magazine

"One of the largest public parks in the metro area, Sweat Mountain is almost all shade, making this the perfect place for dogs in the summer-time - especially if they are easily overheated or especially furry."

COBB COUNTY TRAILS

Cobb County's 32 family-friendly tree-lined trails offer the perfect outdoor escape for families, pedestrians and bicyclists. Cobb County has several trail networks with proposals for a countywide system to connect major areas of the county. This network of trails accommodates pedestrians and bicyclists while providing transportation alternatives to ease congestion. Although portions of the trail system are recreational, they provide connectivity between cities, access to regional activity centers, and a healthy commuting option for travelers who wish to avoid the congestion of some county thoroughfares. And, more trails are being proposed and added.
