HANNAH ANGEL: ACADEMIC COORDINATOR
from Fall 2022 Newsletter
by KYNRES
This past year, the NRES program began the search for a new Academic Coordinator (AC). We are pleased to announce that Dr. Hannah Angel has accepted the position. You may have seen her around campus or received emails from her this past semester. Here, we want to give a more formal introduction to all the NRES students, faculty, and alumni. Welcome Hannah!
BACKGROUND:
• B.S. in Forestry, University of Kentucky
• M.S. in Forestry, Stephen F. Austin State University
• Ph.D. in Crop & Soil Environmental Science, Virginia Tech
Hannah’s background is in forestry and soil science, and she has applied both areas in her graduate work involving mined land reclamation
ADVICE:
Hannah recalls her collective experiences in college, “With each new chapter in my academic pursuits, I struggled at first. Despite my passions and career goals, at times I had so much self-doubt that I wanted to throw my hands up and quit! But I stayed persistent, was open to receiving advice from others, and learned from my mistakes. All of that helped build resilience and confidence.”
CURRENT ROLE:
NRES Academic Coordinator
• First person of contact for those interested in pursuing the NRES program
• Advises first-year and transfer students on curriculum, interests, goals, and experiential learning opportunities
• Teaches NRE 201, one section in the fall (primarily for freshmen) and one in the spring (primarily for transfers)
• Coordinates the NRE 320 Extended Field Experience at UK’s Robinson Forest
• Oversees the NRES Newsletter Biannual publication
Hannah encourages students in the NRES program to forge positive relationships with others whether it’s a peer, advisor, professor, or community member. “Developing good relationships with people is essential to a student’s overall success; arguably more important than how many A’s a student earns. I encourage every student to find a mentor who motivates and inspires them – don’t be afraid to ask that person for help or advice.”
FINAL THOUGHTS:
Any student is welcome to arrange an in person or virtual meeting with me to discuss internships, undergraduate research, resume building, jobs, and education abroad opportunities, or answer any questions about the NRES program!
