01 OPEN-AIR HOUSING Winter 2022

The goal of the project was to create a building that was active and youthful. Most of the residents being retired, allow for them to spend time doing other things then work.

Senior living is often the forgotten parcel of people in a city.

The city of Philadelphia focuses their ambition on creating a fast and efficient city. That works well to create income and provide lots of jobs for young adults, and inspiring workers.

The problem occurs after they have had their career and now are looking to relax and get away from the speed and the noise of the city. Most people that are at this stage in life will move out to the suburbs or head down south where its warmer. But others, enjoy the city and do not want to live anywhere else. So how does a retired, versed citizen fit into the city footprint?

A design must be created that will keep the ideas of a city built for speed and efficiency and translate it into a building with an environment for slower and relaxed people. Creating a community within a community must start from connecting to the exterior neighborhood, which through use of material and building height selection allowed the building to coexist uniformly.

Thus, leading to massing studies that encapsulate both ideas of speed and relaxation. A large atrium with views within the building will create lines of sight from one floor to another. Visually creating movement through curves and natural light connect to the speed of an always changing city. All the amenities that are in the building are private for the residents creating the community inside of a community.

The movement of the building and the circulation through the space responds the speed and efficiency of the city. The use of curves allows the building to feel young and avant garde, which will provide a positive and enriching environment for elderly people to relish.

02 BARTRAM’S BOWL WINTER 2022-2023

Bartrams bowl created an accessible pathway that connects the entrance of Bartams garden to the waters edge. Imersed within the woodlands stands a community of living and learning. Establishing a way for all to be connected to nature allows for a inclusive community. Through the series of exhibition spaces, the public can learn from the fellow working the hatchery. The long and winding path to get to the hatchey calms the visitor through the humbling experience of being in the woods.

Bartram’s Bowl is an interactive fish hatchery located in the woodlands section.

The goal for the project is to create an accessible passage way from the historic buildings to the water’s edge that feels immersed in the woods. During this journey the visitor will be educated in the science and importance of fish and water conservation. The ending stage will be an underwater view at the hatchery located in the Schuylkill. The buildings enclose themsleves around a rain garden which brings fresh rain water into a pond. This water can then be used for the hatcherys.
