Program Pathway

Build Her Girl Scout Experience

Girls today are busier than ever before, but that doesn't mean she can't be a Girl Scout! This guide is filled to the brim with opportunities she can take advantage of on her own time, in her own way. Girls do not have to be a part of a troop to be a Girl Scout. She can attend any and all age appropriate events, programs, and activities, participate in the Product Program and earn the Highest Awards. Troop Experience

A more traditional approach, the Girl Scout Troop, allows girls to join and partake in activities and growth with girls her own age. As part of a group she'll learn who she is and where she wants to go in her life. The Girl Scout Experience is what she needs, when she needs it.

Who better to shape your girl's Girl Scout Leadership Experience? 8

Volunteers are always needed. Who better to help shape your girl's Girl Scout Experience than YOU? We offer detailed training and continued support so that being a part of the Girl Scout family is a no-brainer. Get started today!

4 Program Pillars All girl programs in this guide are separated by our 4 Girl Scout Program Pillars. Life Skills

STEM

Outdoors

Entrepreneurship

Girl Scout Program Processes GIRL-LED:

Girls shape their experience by offering ideas, asking questions, and using their imaginations.

LEARNING BY DOING:

Girls learn through hands-on activities, talking, and reflecting on how they might do things differently.

COOPERATIVE LEARNING:

Girls working together to brainstorm ideas and problem-solve to reach a common goal.

When Girls participate in Girl Scouts... they benefit in 5 important ways! STRONG SENSE OF SELF

Girls have confidence in themselves and their abilities, and form positive identities.

POSITIVE VALUES

Girls act ethically, honestly, and responsibly, and show concern for others.

CHALLENGE SEEKING

Girls take appropriate risks, try things even if they might fail, and learn from their mistakes.

HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS

Girls develop and maintain healthy relationships by communicating their feelings directly and resolving conflicts constructively.

COMMUNITY PROBLEM SOLVING

Girls desire to contribute to the world in purposeful and meaningful ways, learn how to identify problems in the community, and create "action plans" to solve them.

Faith Based Opportunities All in good faith; Girl Scouts have many opportunities to serve their communities and show their kind hearts to others. Though Girl Scouts is not associated with any specific religion or spirituality, we encourage girls to explore different faiths during their time in Girl Scouting. Kindergarten through 12th graders are invited to explore the My Promise, My Faith pin independently or through one of our council-sponsored events. Girl Scouts is a secular organization, but the motivating force in Girl Scouting is a spiritual one. We encourage girls from all backgrounds to take spiritual journeys via their faith's religious recognitions.

To work on this activity independently, you can find a GSUSA handout HERE. No Cost Catholic Religious Awards Thanks to the generosity of the Covington Diocese Office of Catechesis and Evangelization there will be NO CHARGE for any 2021 Catholic Religious awards or booklets for Girl Scouts. There is an award for every grade level. We would LOVE to have more Girl Scouts take advantage of this opportunity! Please contact Lisa Taylor at ltaylor@covdio.org for the booklets and awards.

Entrepreneurship Through Girl Scouts, girls learn to think like entrepreneurs as they participate in activities that spark curiosity, confidence, and innovation. Research shows that girls are actively interested in becoming entrepreneurs, developing financially stable futures, and using their skills to make a big impact on the world. But there are stumbling blocks on a girl’s path to entrepreneurship, including fear of failure, concerns about bringing her big idea to life, and the perception that men are more likely to be entrepreneurs than women. While entrepreneurship may not be right for every girl, every girl will benefit, and maybe even discover a future career path, by learning to think like an entrepreneur. Cookie Patch Programs Patch programs provide Girl Scouts an opportunity to enjoy a variety of activities while learning important skills. Most patch programs are available to Girl Scouts of all grade levels, and some will list different requirements to complete the patch, depending on grade level. Completing patch programs will help your Girls along their Journey and may satisfy requirements for certain badges. Find more patch earning opportunities at www.gskentucky.org.

Wacky Weather Warrior Sample Event We know that sometimes the weather is wacky! We may experience snow, rain, wind and sunshine ALL on the same day. Those are the days when it’s harder to get out and work your cookie booths. Girl Scouts of Kentucky’s Wilderness Road is challenging you to tackle those wacky weather days and be a Wacky Weather Warrior!

Cookie Mentor Girl Scout Mentors are an important part of the Girl Scouts of Kentucky’s Wilderness Road's Cookie Team. That’s why we honor those Mentors who help Girl Scouts all across Kentucky meet their goals. Tell us what makes your Girl Scout Mentor an awesome Cookie Mentor and be eligible for an exclusive Cookie Mentor patch.

Contest Rules How does this work?

When GSKWR declares a “Wacky Weather Warrior Weekend” you will see a GSKWR Facebook post go up. Post your wacky weather booth photos from that weekend in a comment directly on the post, please include your troop number. Troops with the most creative weatherproof booths will receive a Wacky Weather Warrior patch. Be sure to follow us on the Girl Scouts of Kentucky’s Wilderness Road's Facebook page @KYGirlScouts for program updates.

78

If your Cookie Mentor is the best, write a short essay (250-500 words) about what they do that is so awesome and submit it to gskentucky@gmail.com. Be sure to include your Cookie Mentor’s name, your name, troop number and a photo of your Cookie Mentor, preferably involved in a Girl Scout Cookiesrelated activity. However, any photo will be accepted. You may also submit a link to a YouTube video. All submissions must be received by March 1, 2022.

All participants will receive a Cookie Mentor patch. The top stories will be shared on the Girl Scouts of Kentucky’s Wilderness Road's blog and Facebook page @KYGirlScouts.

Girl Scouts

LOVE

to Travel

Traveling can be challenging or scary if you haven’t been a lot of places before. Luckily, as Girl Scouts, we’re all a part of a huge Girl Scout sisterhood; and that sisterhood is full of awesome volunteers and women who have a ton of travel experience! We at GSKWR encourage every girl to begin traveling when she is ready and to treat travel as a progression. From day trips, to overnights, to traveling to other states or even internationally, Girl Scouts has a travel program for you to explore. Girls can travel both locally and all over the world! For local Girl Scout travel guidelines, please reference our Guide to Girl Scout Troop Trips found on the council website under Forms. Looking to go a bit further? How about a Girl Scout Getaway or Girl Scout Destination Trip!

Visit GSUSA’s travel webpage for more information today on getting your Girl Scout Travel experience off the ground!

Girl Scout Week: March 6-12, 2022 National Girl Scout Week is celebrated each year in March around the birthday of Girl Scouts on March 12. This year it will be celebrated across the country March 6-12. Faith is at the heart of Girl Scouting and has been integral to the Girl Scout tradition since our founding in 1912. During Girl Scout Week, take some time to reflect on your beliefs and how they tie into the Girl Scout Law.

The Girl Scout Birthday Week Patch Program is a great way to observe the significance of Girl Scout Week, Girl Scout traditions and demonstrate pride in being a member of the world’s largest organization for girls. The variety of activities will encourage all Girl Scouts, no matter their interest or age to participate in this patch program.

Go Girl - Road Trip Sample Event

Pinwheel to Prevention

Traveling more than 120 miles to attend a Signature Event? You can earn your Road Trip patch.

Camp Naturalist Sample Event Do you love the outdoors and want to learn more about nature and learn some skills that are used in the out-of-doors? A naturalist has lots of different skills. They know how to take care of themselves in the outdoors and they know a little about zoology, biology, ecology, and botany.

Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky is seeking to collaborate with Girl Scouts Troops throughout the state of Kentucky to create educational steps where members are given the opportunity to share public awareness through the planting of pinwheels (the national symbol for Prevent Child Abuse) during the month of April with the overall goal of earning a patch for this community service.

Shop & Share As part of Girl Scouts' historic collaboration with the Kentucky Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Girl Scouts of Kentucky's Wilderness Road are helping Kentucky's First Lady, Brittany Beshear, collect much needed items for the spouse abuse shelters in our council area.

In this first of the Naturalist series, we’ll explore hiking which covers taking care of yourself in the outdoors. There are activities, games, and information to help you Discover more about the outdoors, Connect with the outdoors, and Take Action to help improve the outdoors or to help others learn about the outdoors.

Shop and Share Day is scheduled to take place in April 2022. Troops sign up to volunteer to manage a booth on Shop and Share Day for two hours at a Kroger stores in your area. Kroger has furnished a free patch to all participating Girl Scouts.

Highest Awards The Girl Scout Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards are the highest honors a Girl Scout can earn for her age level. Through them, girls impact their communities, challenge themselves, and gain an edge after high school.

Bronze Award

The Girl Scout Bronze Award is the highest award a Girl Scout Junior can earn. Girls work together as a group to complete a service project that directly benefit the Girl Scout Community, or the girls' local community or neighborhood. These girls are in 4th or 5th grade.

Silver Award

The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can achieve and gives girls a chance to work with a small team or as an individual. Girls focus on projects that make lasting change in their communities. These girls are in grades 6th-8th.

Gold Award

The Girl Scout Gold Award represents the pinnacle of Girl Scout leadership progression. Open to Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors, this prestigious award challenges them to change the world by solving a community problem in an innovative and sustainable way.

The Gold Advantage

The Girl Scout Gold Award not only impacts the community where a girl lives but it also can impact the future of the Girl Scout who earns the award.

These projects help girls develop lasting legacies from a young age. Earning a Gold Award doesn't just help a girl develop while she's in Girl Scouts, it helps her get ahead in life.

Gold Award Girl Scouts join an elite group of women. These women have not only gained courage, confidence, and character, but have demonstrated that they can work hard and change their world. Gold Award projects must be sustainable, meaning they will continue impacting the community long after the Girl Scout has completed her 80 hours of work.

The Gold Award can help girls get college scholarships, stand out during the college application process, and enter the military at least one rank higher than other recruits. Proving once again that Girl Scouts is the best leadership development program for girls in the world.
