ince the very first day that the ABHA was formed the Association has strived to prevent any genetically defective animals from being registered or introduced into our breed. We promote ourselves as a genetically defect free breed.

To my knowledge, that is a completely truthful statement. In our breed we have never identified or found any of the known genetic defects which are recognized in both of our parent breeds, the Angus and Hereford. It hasn’t been until recently that technological advancements have made it possible to identify and test for these defects. Both of these breeds are doing everything that they can to eliminate and test for their known defects so they can minimize the advancement of the defects in the breed.

The world continues to advance and develop more technology. I am confident that as time goes on more defects will probably be identified. One might ask if these defects have been in breeds for a long time why it is so important now to identify them. Is it because we now can? That is a common answer. I think the more important reason is that, as we move forward in our industry, it is important to use the tools that are now available to us. Identifying these defects and keeping them from spreading in the herds could prevent wide spread disaster down the road.

Science is always an evolving study. The more we learn about these defects the better off we will be. Who knows what could happen if these defects were allowed to spread wildly throughout herds.

In our industry we continue to improve and find new methods in feeding, breeding, vaccinating and preventing problems in all areas of our cattle.

Monitoring and guarding against them should be a priority. Every time I hear of a new defect I also hear cattlemen complain about having to test for it. I completely understand the concern for their wallet. However, in the long run it is of great benefit to keep these defects in check as much as possible.

You are probably thinking that all of this is well and good but, you just told us that our breed is free of all defects. That is correct. We must also realize that the base of our breed is from Angus and Hereford and we are still open to outside genetics.

What I mean by that is we are still allowing new Angus and Hereford genetics into our breed, either thru F1’s or Hereford bulls and females. I think all of us will agree that these new outside genetics are needed for now and are a good thing. Someday the need for those outside genetics may possibly be different as we progress and advance in our breed. I

feel that for now allowing these new genetics should remain available for us as a tool. Sure, we need to check every new animal very close to ensure that defects stay out of our herds. There is always the possibility that they can slip in one way or another.

By this Discussion I don’t want you to think that we are going to start requiring a lot of defect testing. I just think it is important for all of us to understand what a problem and concern that these defects are.

Many of our breeders are voluntarily testing their animals, bulls especially, for the known defects that are in our two parent breeds. It is not because they have had a problem. Testing for these defects is more assurance to customers that their animals are clean and that, as a producer you are committed to doing your best to provide defect free and healthy animals. Some breeds require that all herd bulls that produce registered calves be tested for all defects known to that breed and also parentage verified as well. This practice ensures that you are getting what you are supposed to be getting and the animals are defect free.

Many producers, seed stock in particular, are testing for more and more diseases in their herds than ever before. All of this is being done for a variety of reasons including protection of their herd, customer assurance, or possibly the fact that the breeder may have had a problem in the past.

Customer confidence in buying cattle is very important. All of us vaccinate for diseases, and we want our customers to know it. It is a standard practice in our industry. We also do it to assure our customers that they are purchasing healthy and disease free cattle.

Transporting cattle across state lines and out of the country is also becoming more regulated. All of these things add input costs to our cattle. By doing some of this testing and vaccinating as producers we hope that we can possibly offset those costs by receiving a few more dollars for our cattle. Buyers are smart and they realize that the cheapest cattle are not always the best value. Cattle that are delivered trouble free to your customer means a lot whether they are buying a bull, replacement heifers or a load of steers. If they have that buyer’s confidence in you, they will be glad to pay a few more dollars for your cattle. We spend thousands of dollars in our breeding practices to utilize the desired traits and genetics that we want. Why wouldn’t we spend just a few more to protect our herds and our buyers?

he 2017 year has gotten off to a good start with an increase in new members, registrations and transfers.

We converted all our data to the Digital Beef system on January 1, 2017 and we are continuing to try to get all the “bugs” worked out of the system. This process has greatly impacted our production for ALL office procedures. Thankfully the registration, transfer and membership work is starting to

The ABHA’s booth at the 2017 NCBA Trade Show in Nashville, Tennessee was a great success. Tim and Teresa Tarter, Marc Smith and I were there for the three day event. The trade show attendance record was broken with over 9,000 in attendance by the end of Thursday.

The amount of interest shown by all types of cattle breeders in our breed was amazing.

People asked questions, picked up brochures and magazines and were most impressed with the progress that the ABHA has made in such a short time. This progress is because of the work you the ABHA members have done as breeders, promoters and ambassadors of

I do want to apologize to all members for the service slowdown and assure you that we are working diligently to get back up to speed.

Once the Digital Beef system has been de-bugged and becomes available to the membership each member will be given logins and passwords to their accounts.

This will allow you to register, transfer and conduct other ABHA work online as well as pay account balances. You will still be able to submit your work directly to the ABHA office for processing as needed. There will be downloadable tutorials that will show you how to manage your account and herd. There are more tools in this system than I can describe.

Digital Beef and the ABHA will be glad to assist you in shortening the learning curve on the new system. Once up and running we will offer tips and helps in each issue of our magazine allowing you to gain more knowledge with the system.

How important is the udder of beef cattle?

he answer to that question is, “Very important”!!

Traditionally udder quality is something most people talk about in the dairy world, however, for the baby calf that udder is their entire world until they are proficient at grazing. Udder quality can directly impact your bottom line as a cow-calf producer. Udders that do not have proper teats and udder conformation can cost money to the producer for a couple of reasons:

In two studies, cows with mastitis weaned calves that were 7-12.5% lighter than calves from dams that did not have a mastitis event.

3. Calf sickness might be increased by cows with poor quality udders. This might occur because poor udder and teat conformation is harder to keep clean which further exposes the young calf to potential contaminates.

Therefore it is very important to make your replacement and breeding decisions based on the dam’s udder appearance.

A scoring system developed by the Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) can help with providing a quantitative method to evaluate the quality of the cow herd’s mammary system.

When evaluating udder quality there are two primary areas to evaluate: udder suspension and teat size. Udder suspension indicates how well the udder maintains its appropriate shape.

For example, a good udder suspension is when the udder is above the hock of the cow and the bottom of the udder floor is flat which allows all four teats to be evenly distributed and pointing straight to the ground. From an anatomy standpoint, there is one ligament that is prominent to udder suspension, the suspensory ligament. The ligament is what causes that nice crisp line when viewing the cow from the rear and helps divide the udder into 4 quarters. When the ligament is weakened, you can observe that the teats begin pointing in directions that are not perpendicular to the ground. Illustration 1, from Dr. Rick Rasby for the University of Nebraska, illustrates the differences in ligament strength. The ideal is cow number 1 and the worst is cow number 4. From the side view the stronger the suspensory ligament the higher and tighter the udder is to the body wall and the flatter it is across the udder floor, which leads to teats pointing straight down to the ground.

Teat shape is very important as well because the ideal teat is easy for the calf to clasp and nurse. The ideal teat is medium in length and slightly rounded at the end. Additionally, you would like all four teats to be close to the same size and to be placed in about the center of each quarter. Examples of acceptable teat shapes and placement can be found in Illustration 2 with cows numbered 1-4. Cows numbered 5-7 in Illustration 2 are examples of less ideal teat shapes. Their issues are lack of similar size, or thick ended (cow 6). Cow number 8 illustrates another poor quality teat shape because they are not the same size and some are very long and pointed (not rounded at the tip). Cow number 9’s issues from a teat shape perspective are that her teats are thick and funnel shaped. Cow 10 has a very

odd shaped teat because it looks like a thick funnel with a thick pear in the middle. Since we have identified what a good teat shape looks like, and what a poor one looks like, now let’s identify why those teat shapes are issues. For cows 5-8 the calves will end up selectively “milking out” the quarters that have the smaller more rounded teats and not nurse from the long, pointed teats or the ones that are very thick ended.

Those quarters that have the undesirable teat shape are more than likely going to get mastitis. Cows 9 and 10 are females that you might have to hand-milk because the teats will be hard for the calf to grab and be able to nurse, especially for the first month of calf life.

Using what you have learned Now that we identified what is good and bad, how do you use this in your operation to make culling and breeding decisions?

This is where the use of the BIF scoring system can help.

Illustrations 3 and 4 shows examples of the BIF scores. In regards to making your ranches decisions you would like to keep cows that have udder suspension scores of 5 or higher and teat scores of 5 or higher. Replacements should not be kept from dams that have teat or udder suspension scores of 3 or less. This rule also applies to bull selection. Bulls have an impact on their daughter’s udder quality, so it is important make sure the mothers of your breeding bulls have a good quality udder so that his daughters will be productive in your operation.

Another question to ask yourself is, When do I evaluate udder quality? The best time is when that cow is in lactation, primarily within the first 3 months of lactation. This is when the udder will be the fullest and gives the most accurate depiction of shape and suspension. Teat shape and length can be evaluated while cows are dry. Illustration 5 shows the same cow while lactating and after weaning. The lactating picture demonstrates a good quality udder that has strong suspension and appropriate teat shape. Cont’d from pg. 13 she is not lactating you would think she doesn’t have strong suspension because the teats appear to be clustered together.

In conclusion, visually appraising your cow’s udder quality/conformation will help you increase revenue to your cattle operation. Taking the time to appraise your cattle will help with culling and replacement decisions.

Evaluation of the udder involves two things: suspension and teat shape, and if you have a cow that is poor quality in one of those areas you should contemplate removing that female from your operation. ABHA

This demonstrates the importance of evaluating suspension while the cow is lactating, yet you can evaluate teat shape and length effectively. Based on BIF scoring this cow is scored as a 7 for teat shape and a 7 for suspension. Another word of caution while evaluating is make sure you know whether the cow has been nursed recently. he first ever Junior Nationals will take place June 29 July 2 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. There will be many events for juniors and their families to participate. We will be having a judging contest, team fitting, and showmanship along with tours of local attractions in Bowling Green and get together’s with juniors and their families.

Classes will include the normal bull and heifer classes along with a cow-calf class. We will also be awarding a $500 scholarship at the Junior Nationals. The scholarship is open to high school seniors or college freshman who meet the criteria.

With many shows and sales coming up, I encourage all juniors to get their animals out into the ring to work out those first time in the ring problems. If you do not have a heifer for Junior Nationals, I encourage the juniors to buy or partner on a heifer with an adult breeder, so that all and any juniors can attend. Former ABHA CEO Passes

C

raig Gary Ludwig, ABHA CEO from 2009 through 2014, passed away Sunday, January 8, one day before his 76th birthday. He was an Iowa native born in Denison on January 9, 1941. He grew up on the farm learning the valuable lessons that kind of life teaches.

He attended Iowa State University where he earned both a Bachelor and Masters Degree.

He then attended Oklahoma State University earning his PhD in Animal Science. While there he met and married Nancy on May 27, 1967.

Before working with the ABHA Craig worked for 29 years with the

American Hereford Association. The knowledge gained there played a major part in his understanding of the Hereford breed and the problems associated with the goal of the ABHA. Without a doubt, Dr. Craig Ludwig’s most important contribution to the development of Black Herefords was his work to identify and prevent genetic defects in the ABHA. The months of work checking each pedigree back to the Angus and Hereford ancestors was a huge job. It took him most of a year to accomplish. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Nancy, his son Chad, a daughter Laura Butler, and his other son Scott, brothers Arnold and Jon, and grandchildren Elrica and Gabriella Ludwig as well as Remi, Brody and Hadley Butler. Preceding him in death were his parents, Arnold and Marjorie Ludwig, his sister Suzan and brother-in-law Ronnie.

Cont’d from pg. 6 that all of us must continue to watch for and guard against. Docility, feet, fertility, reproductive, along with udder and teats are some of the most common traits to monitor. Many of these traits can be corrected in your offspring by paying close attention to breeding and mating. With the advancement of data and EPD’S that monitor these traits we can now select breeding bulls that have a proven track record in many of these inheritable traits. We as breeders too often select breeding sires based on performance only. While performance may be one of the key elements in selection, we must look at the entire picture in order to build a trouble free and sustainable herd. For some bad traits the best thing to do is cull the animal. I realize that tough culling practices may be something that is hard for all of us to consider, especially if the animal is of high quality in many other areas. If a bad trait is severe or uncorrectable, I promise you that, in the long run, culling is the best thing to do for you as a breeder and your customer relationships.

I recently had a friend in another breed of cattle that culled a cow that was very expensive. After her third calf she prolapsed and according to many veterinarians prolapsing is one of the most common hereditary traits in cattle. He sold her at the sale barn, needless to say at a great loss. He said “I can’t do anything about the first calves but I can get her out of production”. It was a hard thing to do and I felt bad for him but he made

the right choice.

With the new online system we will have the ability to collect, post, and record data for traits such as teats, udder, feet and many more. We have already added a few categories to our EPD’S and more will likely add more as we go forward. The Breed Improvement Committee is looking at a lot of different ways to collect and create new data driven EPD’S. We will have the capability, why not use it? In most of these areas data can be created over time from you as breeders when you register your animals or submit data. Don’t let me scare you! We are not going to ask you to fill out a long form or do something that takes a lot of work. Most of it is just a click of a button. For example, teats may have a check box to score your females in your opinion on a 1 to 10 scale. Some traits could take a few years of data collecting before we feel confident in posting the results of the data as an EPD, while some could be used relatively quickly. The critics of such data may condemn the accuracies. In some case it may not have the highest accuracy. I look at it like this, the more tools and information that I have to help me make informed breeding selections the better. This type data is comparable to standard EPD’S. The more data you record the more accurate that data becomes. It is a tool and I like a lot of tools in my tool box. Learning how to use and apply them to your own program is all up to you. I guess it is all a matter of how good you want your herd to be. ABHA

Ground Zero Farms: Building Something Special from the Ground Up The Flint Hills country of eastern Oklahoma offers some of the best grazing land in the Great Plains. Just south west of the Ozarks lies the small town of Watts, Oklahoma. That is where Rod and Jamie Garman call home and started their beef cattle business. In 2004 the Garman’s had a commercial cow/calf operation that featured black baldie females. In an effort to increase their weaning weights they bought their first Black Hereford bulls.

Because of that decision and the success the Black Hereford bulls had raising those weights, the Garman’s decided to enter the Black Hereford seed stock business. Their operation has 3,000 plus acres on their ranch with another 4,000 leased.

They bought a large number of females from Jernigan Ranch of Missouri. These were mostly Victor Domino bred females. They were bred to sires like P606 and Online 122L. This gave them the genetic base they needed to start into F1 production. They made the decision to concentrate on producing F1s to increase the genetic diversity in the Black Hereford 18 The American Black Hereford

breed. After purchasing semen and bulls from top Angus breeders nationwide they began the process.

Rod says that they have had some obstacles along the way but the family is very happy with where they are presently and see nothing but a bright future for Ground Zero Farms and the American Black Hereford Association. They strive to use the most current genetics using Hereford sires like CRR 719 Catapult 109, NJW 98S R117 Ribeye 88X ET and H/TSR/ CHECZ/Full Throttle ET. Their own Hereford bulls are impressive themselves.

Churchill Toro 507C ET and FF 74-51 Hometown B411 called “Hero” are Ground Zero’s on-farm Hereford sires. They are in the process of developing their own Black Hereford bull battery, currently their main sire is F5 Jojo 301.

The Garmans have two sons, Ethan and Emmit.

Ethan is a 2015 Conners State College graduate and works on the ranch in every aspect of the operation.

Emmitt is still attending high school and helps where ever needed on the farm.

Representatives from the Kentucky Black Hereford Association (KBHA) participated in the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Association Annual Convention.

Vendors from the industry’s leading organizations were in attendance. It was exciting to see the interest in Black Herefords. The KBHA has participated for several years with the goal of promoting the breed and educating Kentucky’s cattleman. Each year there is increasing interest and evidence of industry acceptance. This convention is an excellent opportunity to promote our members breeding stock and upcoming events.

AN IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR ALL ABHA MEMBERS AND BLACK HEREFORD BREEDERS Under the current Bylaws of the American Black Hereford Association it is important to understand what cattle can and cannot be registered and/or transferred to the ABHA. With sales and breeders growing annually here are the details that you need to know: An F1 female is recorded in the ABHA not registered, therefore if you have an F1 it can actually be recorded in the ABHA and in another association without a bylaw violation. But it must be recorded IN the ABHA to register calves in the ABHA. The only way an animal can be registered within the ABHA is if the animal’s sire and dam are both recorded or registered in the ABHA, American Hereford Association or Canadian Hereford Association. If another association issues a registration number for an animal already in the ABHA they can be transferred and used within the ABHA under their original ABHA number.

An animal that is recorded or registered with the ABHA can be transferred to another owner regardless of the animal owner’s status. The purchase must be validated by documentation and provided to the ABHA. The transfer fee for Non-member transfer is $20 per animal and can be paid by the purchaser.

An animal cannot be registered in the ABHA if both of the parents are not registered in the ABHA. Before buying cattle ask if they are or were registered in the ABHA and insist they be transferred as a condition of the purchase.

Make Farm Safety a Priority This Spring

indsight is OK in farming. Questioning your hybrid or herbicide selection or your marketing strategy can lead to better decisions.

But never put yourself in a position where you have to ask, “Why didn’t we devote more time to safety?” It’s too late. You need to recommit to farm safety today.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports: • In 2012, 374 farmers and farm workers died from a work-related injury — a fatality rate of 20.2 deaths per 100,000 workers.

• On average, 113 youth younger than 20 die each year from farm-related injuries, with most of these deaths occurring to youth between ages 16 and 19 (34 percent).

• Of the leading sources of fatal injuries to youth, 23 percent involved machinery (including tractors), 19 percent involved motor vehicles (including ATVs) and 16 percent were due to drowning.

• Every day, about 167 agricultural workers suffer an injury resulting in lost work time. Five percent of these injuries result in permanent impairment.

• In 2012, an estimated 14,000 youth were injured on farms; 2,700 of these injuries were due to farm work.

Prevention seems like an obvious place to start. The type of prevention might not be so obvious. Yes, taking direct steps, such as making sure safety shields are in place, can prevent accidents and injuries. It makes good sense. But the most important preventive step is to make sure equipment is in top working order. Preventing breakdowns saves time. You can maintain your pace and stay on track. According to Farm Safety for Just Kids, one of the most common things people say after a farm accident is, “I was in a hurry.” Do whatever you can now — perform routine maintenance, replace worn parts, stock replacement parts — to reduce potential downtime.

Maintain focus Pressure to stay on schedule can mount as each day passes, especially if weather or other factors outside of our control create delays. That can allow the mind to wander instead of focusing on the task at hand. Lack of concentration can lead to carelessness in areas of farm safety away from tractors and fields, such as: Grain bins. Spring can be a busy time for transporting grain. Grain handling is an area ripe for rushing or cutting corners, especially when the weather turns and fields begin to dry — and you’ve got a mountain of grain to move. The University of Illinois Extension offers several quick reminders about safety in and around grain bins.

the disposition of the most trustworthy cow or sow. Never enter a pen without an awareness of the animals in the pen. Always have an escape plan.

Highway driving. The road is no place for distraction. But letting your mind wander — thinking about the part you need, which field to work next or how you’ll find time to make to your daughter’s school activity — can cause a split-second lapse that leads to disaster. Slow down and remind yourself of basic driving skills.

As you prepare your equipment for spring field work, make time for safety: • Do you have enough first-aid kits? Do family members and employees know where to find the kits? Are the kits up to date and well-stocked?

• Does every employee or family member have emergency contact information stored on cellphones or at their fingertips?

• Skin cancer and other sun-related health issues are a serious concern in agriculture. Make sure sunscreen is available, plentiful and applied.

Preventing sunburn is critical to good skin health.

• Stay rested and eat right. Sleep deprivation and poor nutrition can quickly lead to loss of focus and poor decisions.

No matter how attentive and aware you are about farm safety, accidents or other catastrophic events can and will happen. For those times, be prepared to manage the situation. Develop and implement a comprehensive farm emergency action plan. These plans include everything from farm maps to employee gathering points to evacuation procedures.

Deworming Cattle is a Springtime Chore Written By John Cothren, North Carolina State University

I

f you plan on deworming cattle, spring is the right time. Parasite burdens in pastures peak during the spring, drop over the summer, and rise again in the fall. Internal parasites cause subclinical effects that are then followed by clinical signs. Subclinical effects show up as productions losses. The animals don’t look sick but they experience reduced gain, decreased milk production, lowered conception rates, etc. Clinical effects can be seen and include rough coats, anemia, and edema. Subclinical effects have major economic impacts, so it’s important to deworm cattle before you see the physical signs.

How often you deworm depends on the type of cattle you have and how much of a parasite load they are exposed to. Mature cows usually only need to be dewormed once a year. They should be treated shortly before calving. Calving is a stressful time in a cow’s life and it can lead to suppressed immune function which makes her more susceptible to parasites. Treating twice a year may be needed if you have a large parasite load. Bulls are naturally more susceptible to parasites so they should be treated in the spring and fall. Calves require more frequent deworming. Treatment should start at 3 to 4 months of age

and be given again at weaning. Depending on your farm’s parasite levels, deworming every 3 to 4 months until they reach 1 year may be necessary. Yearlings can be dewormed in the spring and fall until they reach maturity. Heifers aren’t technically considered mature until they are pregnant with their second calf.

The two main types of classes of dewormers are benzimidazoles and avermectins/milbemycins. Please note that these are the active ingredients and not brand names. The avermectin/milbemycin group also offers external parasite control and works well in calves. When choosing a dewormer, keep in mind its spectrum of control, withdrawal time, cost effectiveness, product efficacy, and method of application. It’s important to follow the product dosing guide. There is always a chance that parasites can develop resistance and continual under-dosing could contribute to resistance. If you can’t weigh each animal and dose based on that, calculate your dose based on the heaviest animal in the group, not the group’s average weight. It is also important to not overgraze pastures. This causes cattle to graze closer to the ground and they will ingest more worm larvae. Internal parasite control should be a combination of pasture management and treatment with dewormers. ABHA

Sales J&N Ranch hosts America’s Largest Black Hereford Bull Sale

uyers from 12 states assembled on February 11th in Leavenworth, Kansas, for J&N Ranch’s 26th Annual Production Sale on one of the warmest February days on record. The standing room only crowd in shirt sleeves with ceiling fans blowing overhead warmed the crowded arena as 80 big stout Black Hereford bulls were paraded across the block to active bidding. The sale averaged $3345 per head. The highlight of the sale was Lot 23, now known as JN BULLSEYE JO D411. A ¾ interest and full possession sold for $19,000 to Jo Bulls in Castle Dale, Utah – setting a new record price for a Black Hereford. He will join a stable of bulls in this internet-based semen distributor. This young stand out bull combined a 72 lb. BW with a 727 lb. WW. A son of JN Balder B251 out of the JN Baldee A411 ET cow was the first purebred homozygous black bull to ever sell at J&N Ranch, the birthplace of Black Herefords. He displayed tremendous thickness and length. This high marbling yearling was the top bull in ribeye size. J&N retained a ¼ semen interest for their in-herd use only. Jo Bulls will handle all semen sales.
