Meeting new people, learning more about yourself and, above all, having the best time of your life. This is what KY offers to you, mursu, but how can you make the most of it?

A warm welcome to the KY community, and congratulations on getting into Aalto University School of Business. By accepting your study place you haven’t just opened the door to an excellent university, but to a chapter of life that you’ll look back on for years to come. Let me offer you a few tips to get started on your journey.

Be curious. The most amazing experiences and discoveries come to those who dare to take a leap into the unknown and step out of their comfort zone. Set aside your preconceptions and you might just be surprised.

Stay true to yourself. Authenticity is something money cannot buy and people around you will notice and appreciate you embracing your characteristics and passions. KY is a community where everyone

can find their place just as they are.

Get to know the people around you. Your fellow students have interesting stories to tell, different backgrounds to tell about and diverse interests to share. Dare to greet the fellow kylteri sitting next to you and you may just unlock a lifelong friendship.

So, my deepest wish for the upcoming years is that you can truly feel at home here at KY. Believe me when I say that your student years will fly by in the blink of an eye.

Embrace the little things, the grand celebrations and the late night study sessions. One day you will look back at these days wishing you could live them again.

WHAT IS KY?

What Is KY? KY will be your second home during your studies - bringing all business students together as one community. Founded in 1911, KY provides its members with unforgettable experiences, strong advocacy and a range of services and facilities.

For the years to come, Aalto University Business students, more commonly known as KY, will become a meaningful community to you and your fellow Mursus and Marsus. Founded in 1911, KY has ever since provided its members with unforgettable experiences, services, student advocacy and most importantly friendships that will last a lifetime.

KY exists only for – and because of – our members. Many of our members choose to volunteer in KY’s associations, committees, subcommittees and project teams. Every degree student at Aalto University School of Business may join KY and the membership is free of charge.

KY Foundation was founded to support the kylteri culture. The foundation distributes grants and subsidies to KY’s associations and individual projects. You can read more about the KY Foundation on the second section of this guide.

The following pages will introduce you to the different parts of KY and help you make the most out of your time here. Be sure to follow all of KY’s communications channels to keep on track with what’s happening in our vibrant community! And one more thing,

KY’s History KY has a rich history dating back to 1911. From a small association, KY has grown through various challenges and achievements and continuously evolved, playing a significant role in Finnish business education and student life, culminating in its integration into Aalto University.

KY’S FIRST STEPS

1910s

The Helsinki School of Economics Student Association (Kauppakorkeakoulun Oppilasyhdistys) was founded on October 7th, 1911 for the first Finnish-speaking university-level business school, starting with 70 members and limited financial resources. KY’s flag, student ribbon and emblem all date back to the start of the student union.

PARTYING DESPITE THE PROHIBITION

1920s

In 1923, the name of the association was changed into Helsinki School of Economics Student Union (KY). The prohibition of alcohol created its own challenges for KY, but thanks to clever students, no one had to merely sip lemonade. In 1927, the student union received its own space but the dream of KY's own house had been created.

THE KY BUILDING ON THE HORIZON

1930s

Financing a fully KY-owned building was a long process. Several fundraisers and a raffle were organised. At times the depression drove the entire construction project into a difficult situation, but willpower, hard work and a pinch of luck finally led to success and construction planning began in 1939.

THE KY BUILDING IS COMPLETED

1940s

During World War II, school doors were open infrequently. The war had slowed down construction, yet the KY Building was finished in February 1940, and soon 42 KY members got to move into the top floors. The war also wasn’t enough to cancel traditional events like the Annual Ball, Mursujaiset or Wappu.

TO TOP IT OFF, SMOKE A BOSTON! Post-war, it was time to focus on rebuilding society and the economy.

KY made its first commercial achievement by founding the corporation Amer-Tupakka Oy in 1950, and Amer’s Boston cigarettes quickly grew into a popular brand. Also, club activity started to rise and KY’s sports club was often being unbeatable in academic leagues.

1950s

THE DECADE OF FINNFOCUS & TELEVISION The 1968 export trade show, Finnfocus is the biggest event in KY history. KY rented M/S Finnpartner from Amer, and sailed to London to promote Finland and Finnish companies. The investment was risky, but created positive publicity. KY was also active in the TV business: it was a shareholder in Tesvisio, the company behind the first commercial TV channel in Finland. Student numbers increased quickly at the beginning of the ’60s, leading to housing challenges.

KY’s solution was to start building housing in Töölö and Kallio.

1960s

TURNING THE KY BUILDING INTO OFFICE SPACE Student union activities became more political in the ’70s. There were political battles and therefore frequent changes in the KY Board. A hot topic was the KY Building – should existing student housing be kept or should the building’s financial potential be better utilised? After a long debate, KY finally decided to change the building’s dormitory into office space.

FROM POLITICS TO OVERALLS AND PARTYING Activity wasn’t as political in the ’80s as before. KY partied in the student union’s own restaurants; one of the most popular nightclubs of the time, KY-Exit, was located in the KY Building. Overalls became more common as student life evolved. In the whirlwind of the casino economy, KY began to diversify its stock holdings and professionals were hired to lead KY-owned companies through the Ekomen Group.

KY was also active outside the student union and followed by the media. Furthermore, KY continued searching for its limits and offered financing for creating a new radio channel, Radio City.

EMERGING FROM THE DEPRESSION The deep depression at the time severely affected KY. The Ekomen Group declared bankruptcy in 1992 and KY struggled with financial difficulties. To balance its finances, KY sold its stock holdings in Amer. The representative council meeting leading to the decision was followed by the national news.

1990s

KY IN THE NEW MILLENNIUM Increasing the service level was a major focus point of the first decade in the new millennium. In this spirit, KY created a fund for international exchange to support the students in their traveling expenses. In addition, the apartment offerings kept on expanding when new apartment buildings were finished in Arabianranta in 2006 and on Arkadiankatu in 2009.

2000s

KY AS AN ASSOCIATION As Aalto University and the Aalto University Student Union were founded, KY’s status as a student union was retracted. KY as an association started its operations on the first of January 2010, and during the first years, KY searched for its place in the new union. In the same year, KY Foundation began operating to provide financial support and other resources for students and associations. In 2015, after more than 100 years in Töölö and 75 years in the KY Building, KY expanded to Otaniemi and focused the majority of its activities there. To embrace the Aalto community in full, KY changed its official name to Aalto University Business Students in 2016.

2010s

KY EMBRACES AALTO AND OTANIEMI After multiple floors of the KY Building being unused and its condition declining, KY’s Representative Council and the KY Foundation decided to sell the iconic building in 2020. The move to Otaniemi was even further solidified by this. Afterwards, KY collaborated with AYY and Teknologföreningen on building a Student Cente, however, that project was discontinued. KY then opted for its own long-term space solution and purchased a new KY Building in Otaniemi which is now under renovation and will be opened in 2027.

Orientation If you ask students, many will tell you that orientation was one of the most unforgettable experiences of their student life. Getting to know our campus, meeting many new people and attending your first student events. Orientation truly sets you up for an amazing student experience here in Aalto.

MURSU PASSPORT The purpose of the Mursu Passport is to make new students familiar with all the opportunities KY has to offer, as well as KY’s amazing community and the larger Aalto Community.

Filling out the Mursu Passport is the way to get a KY cockade for your graduation cap for your first KY Wappu, making it an Economist Cap (fin. kauppatieteilijän lakki). By collecting points, you can also gain the following merits and other prizes:

All new students will receive a passport as part of their orientation materials. The Passport will guide you during your first year at KY with its many tasks, ranging from attending info evenings to applying for different volunteer positions! There are also some mandatory points, without which you are not eligible for the merits or the cockade.

Every new student will receive a “Mursu 2026” overall badge that the other merit badges will complement. Passports will be checked during March and each tutor group will have a dedicated time to return their passports. The points you can receive are marked after the tasks. For example, 1/2/3 points means that you can do the task 1, 2 or 3 times and receive 1, 2 or 3 points.

During the opening week of the KY Building there will be a party organized by new students, and you can get 2 points for attending, 4 for helping with the preparations and 6 points for being one of the main organizers! More information about this during the info evening, which will be held on Monday 31.8. at Saha!

Events The KY calendar is packed with all sorts of events! We’ve got something for every vibe – whether you want to chill out with yoga or hit the bars in Kontula. Hop into the KY Events Telegram group to keep up with everything happening!

KY Events

ORIENTATION WEEK AND MURSUJAISET Orientation Week is designed to help you settle into academic life while discovering everything KY and Aalto University have to offer. You’ll dive into the community through events like Otasuunnistus and Aalto Party, and bond with fellow mursus at Jäänmurtajaiset, Mursujaiset and Mursubileet – or Meet Your Masters for Master’s students.

Beyond the parties, the Sports and Wellbeing Committee (LiHy) hosts the Mursu Championships, a fun athletic competition between tutor groups. It’s a great time to explore KY’s various clubs, committees and associations.

A major highlight is Mursujaiset on September 3rd. Described as a 24-hour “academic baptism” for BIZ students, it is an essential experience you don’t want to miss! It might be a good idea to keep the following day free too!

AUTUMN FESTIVAL WEEK

At KY, we believe well-being should be a daily priority, but we take extra care to highlight it during our Feel Good Weeks. These weeks are designed to help you de-stress, find a healthy study-life balance, and discover new wellness habits to keep up year-round. The program varies every time, but there is always something for everyone!

COMPANY EXCURSIONS Throughout the school year, KY associations and subject clubs host various excursions.

These trips provide a valuable opportunity to network face-to-face with company representatives and explore potential career paths. Participating in these events is an ex-

LAULUILTAS AND SITZ PARTIES A Lauluilta is a traditional dinner party that offers a deep dive into KY’s heritage. These evenings include songs from Kiljukaula, KY’s own songbook, paired with a formal threecourse meal, wine and schnapps. It’s a more sophisticated affair, so guests typically dress up a bit more than usual. Look out for Aveclauluilta this fall to experience it firsthand!

Similarly, Sitz parties are a core part of KY’s culture. While they are also dinner parties, they follow their own unique set of rules and etiquette. Unlike the fancier Lauluilta, student overalls are the standard attire for a Sitz. You can learn the magic of sitz culture by attending Harkkasitsit this fall!

PUB CRAWLS Pub crawls, known as approt in Finnish, are student events focused on having a blast with friends. They bring students from various universities and cities together to explore a city’s bars and pubs as a group.

KY hosts two main crawls every year: one in October as part of the Autumn Festival and another in April. You can experience III-kierros along the number 3 tram line, or dive into the Helsinki metro system with the legendary Hukkaputki. Plus, there are even organized trips to attend other crawls throughout Finland!

Code of Conduct

KY is an amazing community full of people from diverse backgrounds, and our greatest strength lies in our members. Through shared policies and values, we ensure that KY remains a meaningful, safe and inclusive community for every kylteri. Therefore, the KY Code of Conduct outlines the principles that guide our everyday actions.

KY’s Code of Conduct outlines the principles and policies all members are expected to follow. Its purpose is to prevent harassment and encourage everyone to act if they witness inappropriate behaviour.

The Code of Conduct applies to all KY’s members, employees, attendees at KY

events, and people who hold a position of trust in an association operating under KY. The principles guide all interactions between our members. Above all, we want everyone to feel safe and empowered to advocate for themselves. Read more at ky.fi/code-of-conduct.

Here are some tips on how to conduct yourself at events and day-to-day student life:

Introduce yourself when meeting someone new.

Ask for consent. May I join you? Can I get you a drink? Is it okay if I give you a hug? ö

Be polite and direct when communicating with other people. For example, “Thank you, I really appreciate that” or “That makes me feel uncomfortable, please stop doing that” Respect privacy, decisions and personal space. Not everyone wants to be in photos, drink alcohol, or have even light physical contact with others.

Help others, and don’t flirt with someone who needs care. Furthermore, if someone can’t clearly communicate or take care of themselves, they can’t consent to sexual interactions.

KY’s Executive Director and the President of KY are responsible for developing the Code of Conduct and making sure that it is being implemented. You can always contact them with low threshold:

Inform the event organiser or bouncer and have them take the lead.

Intervene directly if it feels safe. Ask if everything is okay or calmly address the misbehavior.

Create a distraction by, for example, pretending you’re a friend of the person getting harassed and create an opportunity for them to leave the scene.

Document the situation, since it can be useful later on.

In case of emergency or serious threat, always call 112.

You will also have the chance to learn new skills, discover new sides of yourself, and hopefully find a warm community along with life-long memories, friendships, and connections. Whatever you choose to do, our goal is to support you along the way.

Although there are many different roles and positions within KY, all our employees and volunteers share the same mission: We simply want to offer you the best, most memorable years of your life. Whether you prefer the fells of Lapland or the sunny Mediterranean seas, performing on stage or mastering event organisation, or simply enjoying the KY ride, our goal is to help make your KY dreams come true. At the KY office you can find eight employees – me included – working towards this goal, along with both KY Board and KY Foundation.

The KY office, a.k.a. Espilä, is located at Konemiehentie 4 – not too far from the Business School building! Whether you want to have a cup of free coffee, drench yourself in KY merch from head to toe, get help on KY related issues, or advice on volunteering, Espilä is the place to be. You can check Espilä’s opening hours from our website.

Finding your own path at KY might happen quickly or take a bit more time. Finding your way to Espilä, however, is almost guaranteed to be quick and easy. Come drop by, say hi and who knows, maybe you’ll gain valuable insight on student life while visiting… Either way, we are always here for you!

KY Board Who are the academically experienced people lurking behind the computer screens at Espilä? Who voices out students’ concerns to the school? How is the direction of KY set? Some answers to these questions provide the KY board.

The executive board of KY is the face and voice of all KY members. We work basically full-time running the ongoing operations, leading KY’s strategic direction, figuring out answers to our community’s burning questions and representing KY in both formal and informal settings, top management meetings to annual balls.

Our board consists of eight KY members who, just like you, were once scrolling through this guide knowing absolutely nothing. Nowadays, we work hard in different sectors to ensure you have the best possible facilities to enjoy your study times. Some of us do advocacy work at the student union while others focus on bringing wellbeing to your days. What we all have in common is a heart beating for this community and a desire to give back to it.

The President of KY, Vilma Paavola, balances her time between managing the work of the board, leading KY with the executive director and vice president as well as representing KY at various occasions ranging from KY foundation to our international business student friends. The work of the board is generally divided into recurring tasks and changing projects.

Community Every KY member is part of our welcoming community, and we all play a role in building it. KY’s community sector is one of the biggest and most vibrant parts of KY, consisting of wellbeing, culture, new students, clubs, and premises. Together, these sectors work year-round to create unforgettable experiences, support students throughout their university journey, and make sure everyone can find their place within the KY community.

University years are often described as the best years of our lives – and no wonder why!

However, alongside all the fun, everyone faces struggles and challenges from time to time. Supporting the wellbeing of our members is a top priority for KY, and one of the main tasks of KY Board member Niklas Järn and Association Coordinator Sophia Vilponen together with KY’s Sports and Wellbeing Committee LiHy.

The New Students Sector ensures that your journey in KY’s community feels as smooth and easy as possible by recruiting and training tutors, organizing the orientation week as well as new student hangouts later in the academic year. Your time as a mursu, marsu or an exchange student at KY is something that can’t be replicated anywhere else! The sector is led by Julia Särkkä, KY Board member responsible for new students, Tuisku Roininen, the Tutor Coordinator at the School of Business, Atte Moisio, KY Board member responsible for Master’s Students and Veera Huovinen, KY Board member responsible for Culture.

CULTURE KY strives to provide the best possible student experience for all its members. The culture sector works to ensure everyone feels welcome, while offering plenty of activities year-round. The goal is to give every student the chance to explore their interests and find their place within the community. The sector is led by the KY Board member responsible for culture, Veera Huovinen, together with Culture Producer Eemil Tikkanen. They lead the Cultural Committee KUVA and collaborate with the subcommittees, KUJ, NESU-KY and KY-SUB.

CLUBS KY is the roof organization for around 60 associations, most of which are clubs. KY’s Association Coordinator Sophia Vilponen and the KY Board member responsible for clubs, Niklas Järn, ensure that all clubs get as much support and guidance as they need.

PREMISES The Premises sector consists of Board Members Tatu Lehtisyrjä and Jaakko Martikainen and Administrative Coordinator Reko Rusthollkarhu. Currently, KY oversees three properties in Otaniemi: Espilä, Saha, and BMK. These spaces are available for our members and associations to use, and our primary goal is to ensure they serve the KY community as effectively as possible.

Maintaining these facilities is a team effort. If you notice anything that needs attention, or have ideas for improvement, please don't hesitate to reach out. Our sector is also actively involved in the new KY Building project, which is scheduled for completion early next year! The House Opening Task Force has also been founded to ease the transition into the new KY Building era.

Academic Affairs Who advocates for students at the School of Business?

KY’s Academic Affairs Sector and Hallopeds do!

The Academic Affairs Sector handles matters that affect every School of Business student's academic life. The sector is led by two board members — this year Atte Moisio and Julia Särkkä. Alongside Atte and Julia, Hallopeds and the Educational Task Force are very important contributors within the sector.

Halloped (fin. Hallinnon Opiskelijaedustaja) = a Student Representative. For example the Academic Affairs responsibles in Subject Clubs and KY are Hallopeds.

Educational Task Force (fin. Koulutuspoliittinen Toimikunta/KOTO) = A committee that supports the Academic Affairs Sector for example, in Teacher Competence Assessments and organizing events such as Tea and BIZcuits.

Decision-makers at the School of Business are eager to hear input from student perspectives. Student representatives from Subject Clubs and KY participate in important discussions and sit on almost every decision-making body at both School of Business and University level.

Communications What is happening at KY? Where should you be and when? How do I get involved in student life? If you are feeling unsure, don’t worry – KY’s Communications Sector is here to keep you in the loop about everything going on in our vibrant community.

There’s always something happening at KY, and with so much information, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. That’s where the Communications Sector steps in! From updating our official channels to training volunteers in using them, we handle everything related to communications. We make sure that students get the newest updates on events, studies, volunteering and career opportunities.

As one of the largest sectors of the KY Office, communications brings together a wide range of expertise – from branding and visual design to editing the Kylteri magazine and managing IT. Board member Unna Jahnukainen and Communications Coordinator Sanni Heikkinen are responsible

for communicating everything that is happening in our community. Art Director Julia Orava oversees all visuals at KY, working on graphics ranging from campaign graphics to designing the layout of Kylteri magazine.

Our AD works closely with Siiri Reiniluoto, the Editor-in-Chief of Kylteri, who manages all aspects of our student magazine. Meanwhile, our IT Coordinator Niilo Niinimäki manages KY’s IT systems and oversees new technology projects.

Corporate Relations Wondering what you want to do after graduation, where to find your first job, or how to land an internship? KY is here to help you explore your options, meet employers, and take your first steps toward working life.

Career is an important part of student life, probably for most the end goal of it all. KY’s Corporate Relations sector consisting of Board Member Jaakko Martikainen and Corporate Relations Coordinator Jaakko Koskinen work to make working life more approachable by bringing students and companies together in ways that benefit both sides. For students, this means opportunities to discover different employers, learn what companies are really like beneath the surface, and network with company representatives.

KY offers a wide range of career related opportunities, including excursions, career dinners, networking events, job posts, and collaborations with different employers. Our partners also play an important role in making many of KY’s finest events possible.

Still, remember that your first summer as a student does not have to define your whole career. Not getting a job right away is not the end of the world. What matters is staying curious, meeting new people, exploring what is out there, and developing your skills. You can do this through volunteering in student associations within KY, Aalto and subject clubs.

Subject clubs also offer career events and opportunities tailored to specific majors, helping you better understand different industries and paths. KY FOUNDATION

KY Foundation KY Foundation helps students achieve their professional, study-related and extracurricular goals at the Aalto University School of Business.

The purpose of the KY Foundation is to enable the KY community to thrive, through supporting leisure activities, culture, sports, and the study success of business students at Aalto University. The KY Foundation supports students and associations both financially and through different resources like free spaces. With a yearly budget of approximately 1,7 million €, the KY Foundation works to ensure that Aalto University’s business students can enjoy the best student experience for years to come.

OVER 800,000 EUROS OF GRANTS AWARDED ANNUALLY The KY Foundation offers annual grants and subsidies to the KY community totalling at over 800 000 €. This is distributed to different clubs and associations that provide students with activities, services, and leisure.

But you don’t have to have a club or association to reap the benefits of the grants. We also give out grants to individual students, or groups of students who come up with great ideas for a new project or event. So come up with creative ways to share joy to your fellow students and apply for a grant from the KY Foundation to make your dream into a reality! We also help with starting up new clubs and associations, so if you have an idea for a new club, apply for a grant

and leave your mark in the KY community.

The latest information on current subsidies can be found at KY Foundation’s website (kyfoundation.fi) and the grant portfolio is developed according to students’ needs.

FREE PREMISES FOR BUSINESS STUDENTS KY Foundation provides students and KY’s associations free space to operate and organize events in. On the Otaniemi campus, the KY office “Espilä” and the party venue “Saha” stand on opposite sides of Konemiehentie, providing KY members and associations space for different purposes.

In addition we have a large event space in Betonimiehenkuja. KY Foundation currently renovates newly acquired building in Metallimiehenkuja, which will be the home of KY for years to come. The new “KY-building” will have for example a new event space, a new office for KY, meeting rooms, sauna, and lounge for KY members to use for various activities. The renovation of the new building is estimated to be completed in the early 2027.

Whether organizing larger meetings, parties or chilling with coffee, these buildings provide business students the space they need, all free of charge!

STUDENT-LED DECISION-MAKING Since the KY Foundation has such a big role in the KY community, it is important that students are also the ones calling the shots.

Decision making in the KY Foundation is led by the Executive Board and its Chairperson Juho Ollanketo. The Board consists of a student majority and advisory members. The advisory members are top professionals in their fields of asset and real estate management and help ensure that the Foundation’s assets are managed in the best possible way. The Foundation also employs Managing Director Arttu Lääkkölä, who oversees the day-to-day operations.

KUJ KUJ, or more formally Kulttuurijaosto, is the Cultural Subcommittee of KY. For decades, KUJ has made sure KY students get their fair share of parties and events. Our most notable events include Sillis, Club Lagoon, and the legendary Mursujaiset, a 24-hour ordeal welcoming new students to the community. KUJ

is also responsible for the iconic dollar-green overalls, and members can be spotted by their fur-collared overalls. Our events vary from free cake buffets to week-long hiking trips in the Nordics. The members of the most energetic committee of KY can be recognised from their striped Adidas jackets.

The first connection to KY and university life in general for all new students will be through their tutors. Behind them is KY’s Tutor Committee, TC, which recruits, trains, and supports tutors throughout orientation. TC also organizes fun events for tutors, such as the Tutor Amazing Race, Tutor Cottage, and Tutor Song Night. If you want a behind-the-scenes look at orientation while giving back, TC is the perfect place for you.

Who says student life must slow down once you begin your master’s studies? Masters’ Committee or MC organizes events for all master’s -level and master-minded students, from song nights all the way to a boat party to kick off the autumn semester.

Annual Ball Committee Every year, KY’s Annual Ball Week culminates in the Annual Ball, one of the most anticipated and glamorous traditions at KY. The Annual Ball Committee is responsible for planning and organizing the unforgettable celebration from start to finish.

KY’s Annual Ball is the single most glamorous event of the year and the highlight of the Annual Ball week, held at the end of February or the beginning of March. The date is determined by a long tradition of taking place on the next Saturday after the birthday of Anders “Antti” Chydenius, who is known for his work as an economist.

The Annual Ball is organised by the Annual Ball Committee, which is chosen during the autumn, and is open to everyone. Usually, the committee consists of

8 members who all have different responsibilities, such as, programme, invitations, corporate relations, and communications.

Being part of the six month project is an amazing opportunity to use your creativity and shape one of KY’s most prestigious traditions. If you have great ideas or amazing visions that would make the night even more memorable, do not miss the opportunity to apply to be a part of the next Annual Ball Committee.

Representative Council The Representative Council, also known as RepCo, is KY’s highest decision-making body, responsible for shaping the future direction of the organisation and representing the interests of KY’s members.

The Representative Council, or RepCo (edustajisto in Finnish), is KY’s highest decision-making body. It ensures that KY acts in the best interest of its members and sets the broader direction for the organisation.

RepCo consists of KY members who want to influence KY’s future. While the KY office handles daily operations, the Council decides what KY stands for and what it should do in the years ahead. The Council holds meetings about once a month at the School of Business. Decisions are made in aforementioned meetings, but council work also includes preparation, discussion, plan-

ning, and team-building through afterworks and other events.

HOW CAN I JOIN? You can run as a candidate or vote in the next Council Elections. RepCo is elected every two years and the next elections will be held in autumn 2027. All KY members are also welcome to attend RepCo meetings, follow upcoming meetings and past decisions on KY’s social media, or contact a current Council member or the Chairs to share your thoughts.

PROBBA For the first time since our conception as an intensive Mikkeli-born Bachelor of Business Administration in 1989, the ‘Baba’ spirit enters a renaissance. As the BScBA bids Mikkeli a warm adieu and settles into Otaniemi, Probba invites you to join a close-knit, international community where academia and visceratonia are two sides of the same coin.

In 1989, the International Business programme launched as an answer to a unique conundrum: a need for internationalisation in Finnish education. The Helsinki School of Economics created a home for ambitious students to master business notions in intense, three-week bursts. Initially a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), the accreditation became the Aalto BScBA we know today. Intimate and quiet, Mikkeli was an unconventional home for a notable institute. Yet for over three decades, the town accorded students from across the world a warm welcome. As we move into a new era in Otaniemi under the KY

network, its summer sun bids us an ever warmer adieu.

Derived from the BBA abbreviation, the moniker Baba is inextricable from our essence. Burrowed into one another for solace over overcast Savonian winters, Babas formed bonds that persist such that it is remiss to summarise the Baba spirit. It is close-knit friendships, cross-continental connections, and a devoted alumni network. Above all, it is curious excitement and a love for risk. Probba is the student association for BScBA students. Born from the Latin Pro BBA (“For the BBA”), the association vouches for students' interests and hosts memorable events that honour time-old traditions.

Aalto University Student Union As a student of Aalto, Aalto University Student Union (AYY) is your student union. AYY brings together approximately 18,000 students of arts, design, business, and technology. We protect our members’ interests and work to ensure student wellbeing, as well as to improve teaching at Aalto and the best student life in the world.

As a member of AYY, you are entitled to numerous student union services and student benefits, both locally and across Finland. AYY provides its members with a range of services, including affordable student housing, rental venues, and advocacy. Rental facilities AYY rents saunas, event venues, meeting rooms, and various recreational facilities to its members. Members can also rent the student union van.

Scholarships and project grants Based on applications, AYY annually awards scholarships to active members and operating grants to associations within the student union. You can also apply for project grants from the TTE Fund for projects organised by a group of friends or an association.

Student benefits Once you have enrolled for attendance at the university and paid AYY’s membership fee, you will receive a digital or plastic student card for proving your student status (provided by Frank). The validity of a plastic student card is verified with a year tag available from AYY service office.

At the same time, you can also pick up the free Design Notebook and an overall patch.

With a student card, you will have access to hundreds of benefits, such as student restaurants, VR, Matkahuolto, and HSL. You can also link an international ISIC license to the app, which provides benefits worldwide.

organizes events for all Aalto University students and maintains and renews Aalto culture. Aava’s goal is to bring together all schools within Aalto and create joy in doing things together, as well as unforgettable experiences for all Aalto students. Under Aava, there are five committees that recruit members.

Participation does not require a large commitment, and you can apply without prior volunteering experience.

MTMK: The Master’s Committee (MTMK) organizes multicultural events throughout the year, ranging from cultural events to parties. Despite the name, everyone is welcome regardless of their year of study.

FestTMK: The Fest Committee (FestTMK) organizes two of Aalto’s biggest parties: the Aalto Afterparty, which concludes the orientation period, and the free outdoor festival Aalto Open Air, which kicks off the May Day celebrations.

VujuTMK: The Anniversary Committee (VujuTMK) coordinates AYY’s anniversary week, which culminates in the annual ball and the traditional “sillis” (afterparty brunch) held over the weekend.

STMK: The Adventure Committee (STMK) organizes adventure-themed events. Traditional events include the Tour de Terde terrace crawl during anniversary week and the Aalto Amazing Race in the autumn, aimed at first-year students and gathering participants from all fields of study.

LTMK: The Sports and Wellbeing Committee (LTMK) organizes events that promote students’ physical activity and wellbeing. Traditional events include Herkkuappro, Sporttiappro, and MökkiCup.

Jag är Junias Vasama, Phuxivator på Teknologföreningen, TF, i år. Min viktigaste uppgift under det kommande året är att ta hand om TF:s phuxar – även dig, om du väljer att delta i vår verksamhet!

Teknologföreningen är den svenskspråkiga nationen vid Aalto-universitetet. Våra medlemmar är inte bara de som har svenska som modersmål eller talar det flytande, utan alla som är intresserade av det svenska språket – oavsett skola eller studieinriktning. Trots namnet tar vi alltså inte bara emot teknologer, utan på TF kan du träffa även ARTSare och andra kylterin. Du behöver inte heller tala flytande svenska för att bli medlem, utan bara vara ivrig att komma med i vår svenskspråkiga gemenskap. TF är till för alla: “ruotsinkielisille ja ruotsinmielisille”. Ta dig alltså modigt till vårt nationshus Urdsgjallar redan under introveckan; här kan du både skriva in dig i nationen och samtidigt äta dig mätt på Täffäs världsberömda spagu.

Ditt phuxår kommer redan från början vara fyllt med roliga evenemang, både på TF och på KY, och jag rekommenderar att du tar ut allt du vill och orkar av tiden. Via KY:s verksamhet har du en jättebra chans att lära känna dina studiekamrater inom din studieinriktning, och på TF har du dessutom en möjlighet att få vänner och kontakter från olika studieinriktningar och phuxkullar. Genom att aktivt delta på evenemang och samla phuxpoäng

Kom ihåg att ha det roligt och vila upp dig under sommaren, hösten närmar sig med stormsteg och bär med sig otroliga upplevelser. Phuxåret är ett av de mest minnesvärda åren av studietiden! Studying at Aalto BIZ Studying at a university is quite different from your past studies: there is no strict curriculum unless you decide to create one for yourself. Now you have the freedom to choose which courses to attend and how to build your individual timetable. This freedom comes with great responsibility – you must ensure that you complete all the courses required for your degree.

The time it takes to finish your degree depends not only on your studying methods and planning but also on your individual life situation. While the typical target time for completing both your Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees is five years, working, going on an international exchange, or starting a family may affect this timeline. Conversely, clear scheduling and a goal-oriented attitude could help you graduate more quickly.

STUDYING AT THE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS You study at Aalto BIZ (Aalto University School of Business), which is part of Aalto University. Aalto University was formed in 2010 when three independent universities – Helsinki School of Economics, Helsinki University of Technology, and the University of Art and Design Helsinki – merged into one. Today, the university consists of six schools, and you are free to attend courses or even complete your minor studies in any of them.

Studying methods vary between courses and teachers, but the most important thing to remember is that teachers will not give you ready-made answers. Instead, they

provide you with a broad toolkit for solving problems and approaching challenges from different perspectives. In addition to lectures, most courses include assignments, small group teaching, presentations, case work, and teamwork. While many courses conclude with an exam, assignments and project work often have a significant impact on the final grade as well.

BACHELOR’S AND MASTER'S DEGREES Your studies begin with a Bachelor’s degree.

At Aalto BIZ, the Bachelor’s degree consists of 180 ECTS and includes common core studies, specialization and minor studies, language studies, and elective studies. At the end of your first year, you will choose one of seven specialization areas: Accounting, Business Law, Economics, Finance, Information and Service Management, Management, or Marketing. Your specialization will make up approximately one-third of your degree and determine the area in which you write your Bachelor’s thesis.

STUDYING AT AALTO BIZ

Bachelor’s degree. The two-year Master’s degree consists of 120 ECTS and includes advanced specialization studies, minor and elective studies, and the Pro Gradu thesis.

While many students continue in the same field they specialized in during their Bachelor’s studies, it is also possible to switch to a completely different major or apply to one of Aalto’s interdisciplinary programmes.

WORKING LIFE Alongside your studies, you will also start thinking about working life. Aalto BIZ Career Services supports students from the beginning of their studies until graduation by helping with career planning, job searching, internships, and professional development.

Through personal guidance, career events, CV clinics, workshops, and the JobTeaser recruitment platform, Career Services helps students build valuable skills and connections for their future careers.

At the beginning of your studies, your tutor will explain everything you need to know about studying and student life. Remember that you can always ask your teachers,

The Everyday Life of a Student It’s easier to enjoy student life when your day-to-day necessities are in order.

This section aims to answer practical questions about housing, income and healthcare. No need to worry, we students are taken well care of, especially here at Aalto.

HOUSING AYY owns apartments that are rented out to students of Aalto University. First-year students and students moving from outside the metropolitan area have priority in the housing queue. You can apply for housing as soon as you receive the confirmation of your place of study. You can read more about AYY’s housing on ayy.fi and visit AYY’s office at Otakaari 11, Espoo if you have any further questions. In addition to AYY’s student apartments, there are apartments offered by HOAS and Student Nations (Osakunnat). Check them out too!

FINANCIAL AID Student financial aid is a social benefit that consists of three parts: study grant, housing supplement and student loan. To be able to get the housing supplement, you must be eligible for the study grant. Otherwise, you can apply to get the general housing allowance.

To receive student financial aid, you must gain at least 5 ECTS per supported month. However, the minimum is 20 ECTS per academic year, regardless of the number of months for which you receive student financial aid. In addition, since student financial aid is a social benefit, your income

affects the amount of student financial aid you can receive.

In recent years, there have been many changes to student financial aid, so remember to follow Kela’s website and ask if anything is unclear to you!

HEALTH AND WELLBEING The Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS or YTHS in Finnish) takes care of university students’ health. You can always make an appointment when you are in need of health services. To be entitled to the healthcare services, students have to pay a healthcare fee for each semester. The fee needs to be paid unprompted (you won’t be sent an invoice regarding it) twice a year and you can pay the fee at the Oma Kela website. If YTHS (FSHS) is closed or you cannot make an appointment, you can always use your own municipal health center or emergency services.

EXHAUSTION AND CONCERNS In case of any concerns or exhaustion, you can turn to the students’ support center Nyyti or the university pastors of Aalto.

With study-related challenges, you can turn to student affairs services at your school or Aalto’s study psychologists.

UNISPORT UniSport offers Aalto University students sports services and has sports facilities on the City Centre Campus of the University of Helsinki as well as in Kumpula, Meilahti, Otaniemi and Töölö. UniSport offers, amongst other things, group exercise classes, ball games, a gym and various courses. Further information can be found on Unisport’s website.

TRANSPORTATION IN THE METROPOLITAN AREA A 40% discount is granted on seasonal tickets for students if they are registered within the HSL region (Espoo, Helsinki, Kauniainen, Kerava, Kirkkonummi, Vantaa) and have the METRO. HSL season tickets are discounted for students living in the HSL area.

STUDENT MEALS Otaniemi is the home to multiple student restaurants that are subsidised by Kela.

Daily menus and restaurant locations can be found on kanttiinit.fi or the Kanttiinit mobile app. To be eligible for the student prices, you must present a valid student card or a receipt of a paid student union membership fee. Student meals usually cost around 3,10–5,95€.

STUDENT CARD As a student, you get to enjoy various discounts and benefits – but to be eligible you need to prove your student status by showing a valid student card. After having paid the membership fee of your student union, you may download the Frank App and use it as a digital student card.

Different Places, One KY The Otaniemi campus offers a variety of locations, ranging from KY and AYY event spaces to multiple student restaurants and optimal study spots.

Students at the School of Business primarily carry out their studies at the Undergraduate Centre (Otakaari 1) and the School of Business building (Ekonominaukio 1). If you want to grab a coffee between lectures, you can check out the KY Corner, a cozy break room located in the U-wing of the Undergraduate Centre. Additionally, KY’s office (Espilä) and the event space Saha are just a few minutes' walk from the Undergraduate Centre and right next to the School of Business.

ESPILÄ Located at Konemiehentie 4, right across from KY’s event space Saha, Espilä is where the KY Board, employees, and KY Foundation staff work. Espilä features conference rooms for meetings, as well as a common working space for all KY members. Don’t hesitate to drop in for a cup of coffee (it’s free for all KY members!) and say hi to the KY Office team.

MEMBER SERVICES When in need of KY-related assistance, don’t hesitate to contact KY’s Member Services. They can assist you with buying

KY products, claiming lost and found items, and making space reservations. Member Services can be reached by email at service@ky.fi, or simply by coming by to Espilä in person during service hours to get the help you need!

SAHA & BMK Saha and BMK are the go-to event spaces and homes for parties and KY activities in Otaniemi.

The new four-story building will eventually replace Espilä and BMK. This means the KY office, Member Services, and our biggest event venue will all be housed under one roof.

for KY members to study, hang out, and enjoy their day.

Until the new building opens next year, all of our current premises remain fully in use. The completion of the new house will be a grand milestone for the KY community, and it is something all KY members should eagerly look forward to!
