Welcome to the Aalto University School of Business and, above all, welcome to KY! I’m certain that your next few years will be unforgettable in many ways. Our task at KY is to create the best possible conditions for a unique student life, and you new Mursus are a part of it since day one.

HECTOR BJÖRKLUND ö Chair of the KY Board

A warm welcome to the KY community, and congratulations on getting into Aalto University School of Business – it’s not an easy feat! The journey that lies ahead is a colorful, vibrant and inclusive community with unforgettable moments. Aalto University Business Students (KY) , is the home of business students in Otaniemi. Founded in 1911, KY has provided its members with services, student advocacy and memorable experiences for over 114 years now. All present degree students at Aalto BIZ can join KY for free!

I often get asked what is unique about KY. Then I go on and ramble about our history and all the ventures we’ve been involved in – but center around one point. We have something for everyone. KY has an extraordinary capacity both operationally and financially to include, innovate and adapt. Clubs, subject clubs and subcommittees are an integral part of the community – all together forming a coherent identity for us. New ones are founded every year – and if you have an interest which is not represented yet – we highly encourage you to start a club around it. You’re likely not the only one in our community interested in what you’re founding.

I hope this guide functions as a warm introduction to our community, with plenty of information on what we have to offer. When I started my studies back in 2022, I’d refer to this very guide once in a while to remind myself what the difference between a com-

mittee and subcommittee was, or which club did what. I quickly realised KY had a ton of opportunities to volunteer, have fun, meet new people and most importantly, shape the community together.

With a not-so-balanced mix of studying and enjoying student life (partying), I’ve volunteered in a subcommittee, as a tutor, in a club, before joining the KY Board in 2024 and subsequently continuing as the Chair into 2025 all while meticulously trying to complete my Finance degree. I long had the vision that I’d finish my degree quickly and go to work, but as many of this dear community have come to realise – KY offers so much that you simply get dragged along into the vibrant student life here. Embrace the fact that you’re a student only once. Meet new people. Have fun. You’ll have time to work for the next 40-60 years (depending on when the Finnish pension system collapses :D), so one year here and there makes no difference in the big picture. I can guarantee you that you will have some of the best moments of your life as a student, especially in our community, in KY. Enjoy your time here!

Until we meet again – you’ll recognise me from my Philosopher cap without a brim. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about literally anything – I’m quite good at extrapolating and enjoy doing it: hector.bjorklund@ky.fi

KY’s History

KY has a rich history dating back to 1911. From a small association, KY has grown through various challenges and achievements and continuously evolved, playing a significant role in Finnish business education and student life, culminating in its integration into Aalto University.

KY’S FIRST STEPS

The Helsinki School of Economics Student Association (Kauppakorkea koulun Oppilas yhdistys) was founded on October 7th, 1911 for the first Finnish-speaking university-level business school, starting with 70 members and limited financial resources. KY’s flag, student ribbon and emblem all date back to the start of the student union.

PARTYING DESPITE THE PROHIBITION

In 1923, the name of the association was changed into Helsinki School of Economics Student Union (KY). The prohibition of alcohol created its own challenges for KY, but thanks to clever students, no one had to merely sip lemonade. In 1927, the student union received its own space but the dream of KY's own house had been created.

THE KY BUILDING ON THE HORIZON

Financing a fully KY-owned building was a long process. Several fundraisers and a raffle were organised. At times the depression drove the entire construction project into a difficult situation, but willpower, hard work and a pinch of luck finally led to success and construction planning began in 1939.

THE KY BUILDING IS COMPLETED

During World War II, school doors were open infrequently. The war had slowed down construction, yet the KY Building was finished in February 1940, and soon 42 KY members got to move into the top floors. The war also wasn’t enough to cancel traditional events like the Annual Ball, Mursujaiset and Wappu

TO TOP IT OFF, SMOKE A BOSTON!

Post-war, it was time to focus on rebuilding society and the economy. KY made its first commercial achievement by founding the corporation Amer-Tupakka Oy in 1950, and Amer’s Boston cigarettes quickly grew into a popular brand. Also, club activity started to rise and KY’s sports club was often being unbeatable in academic leagues.

THE DECADE OF FINNFOCUS & TELEVISION

The 1968 export trade show, Finnfocus is the biggest event in KY history. KY rented M/S Finnpartner from Amer, and sailed to London to promote Finland and Finnish companies. The investment was risky, but created positive publicity. KY was also active in the TV business: it was a shareholder in Tesvisio, the company behind the first commercial TV channel in Finland. Student numbers increased quickly at the beginning of the ’60s, leading to housing challenges. KY’s solution was to start building housing in Töölö and Kallio.

TURNING THE KY BUILDING INTO OFFICE SPACE

Student union activities became more political in the ’70s. There were political battles and therefore frequent changes in the KY Board. A hot topic was the KY Building – should existing student housing be kept or should the building’s financial potential be better utilised? After a long debate, KY finally decided to change the building’s dormitory into office space.

FROM POLITICS TO OVERALLS AND PARTYING

Activity wasn’t as political in the ’80s as before. KY partied in the student union’s own restaurants; one of the most popular nightclubs of the time, KY-Exit , was located in the KY Building. Overalls became more common as student life evolved. In the whirlwind of the casino economy, KY began to diversify its stock holdings and professionals were hired to lead KY-owned companies through the Ekomen Group KY was also active outside the student union and followed by the media. Furthermore, KY continued searching for its limits and offered financing for creating a new radio channel, Radio City

EMERGING FROM THE DEPRESSION

The deep depression at the time severely affected KY. The Ekomen Group declared bankruptcy in 1992 and KY struggled with financial difficulties. To balance its finances, KY sold its stock holdings in Amer. The representative council meeting leading to the decision was followed by the national news.

KY IN THE NEW MILLENNIUM

Increasing the service level was a major focus point of the first decade in the new millennium. In this spirit, KY created a fund for international exchange to support the students in their traveling expenses. In addition, the apartment offerings kept on expanding when new apartment buildings were finished in Arabianranta in 2006 and on Arkadiankatu in 2009.

KY AS AN ASSOCIATION

As Aalto University and the Aalto University Student Union were founded, KY’s status as a student union was retracted. KY as an association started its operations on the first of January 2010, and during the first years, KY searched for its place in the new union. In the same year, KY Foundation began operating to provide financial support and other resources for students and associations. In 2015, after more than 100 years in Töölö and 75 years in the KY Building, KY expanded to Otaniemi and focused the majority of its activities there. To embrace the Aalto community in full, KY changed its official name to Aalto University Business Students in 2016.

KY EMBRACES AALTO AND OTANIEMI

After multiple floors of the KY Building being unused and its condition declining, KY’s Representative Council and the KY Foundation decided to sell the iconic building in 2020. The move to Otaniemi was even further solidified by this. Afterwards, KY has collaborated with AYY and Teknologföreningen on building a Student Center. However, the project was discontinued last year, so the search for KY’s longterm space solutions continues.

The KY Year

Whether you are seeking new adventures or looking for friends, KY has many opportunities in store for you! Be it partying until dawn, learning new skills, or trying out new sports, KY truly has it all! These events are just some of the highlights KY has to offer – be sure to follow KY’s communications channels, such as KY Events, to stay on top of all the events from KY’s different associations throughout the year!

Events

The KY Year is filled with various types of events. There’s definitely something for everyone, whether you’re looking to unwind with some yoga or go bar hopping in Kontula. Be sure to join KY Events on Telegram to stay up to date!

ORIENTATION WEEK AND MURSUJAISET

Orientation Week is not only about adapting to the academic world, it’s also about getting to know KY and Aalto, our associations and what they have to offer. This includes events ranging from getting to know the Aalto community through Otasuunnistus , and Aalto Party, to getting to know your fellow mursus at Jäänmurtajaiset , Mursujaiset , and Mursubileet – or Meet Your Masters , if you are an incoming Master’s mursu. The whole Orientation Week is filled with amazing events for you to meet new people and gain a grasp of what being a student at Aalto University School of Business is all about. KY, as well as the Orientation Week, is not only about the boozy nights. To ensure this, KY’s Sports and Wellbeing Committee LiHy organises a playful sports event, the Mursu Championships , where tutor groups compete against each other. This is also one of the many places where you can get to know KY’s sports associations. During the Orientation Week, you will get a chance to learn more about KY’s different associations, such as its clubs, subcommittees, committees, and subject clubs, and everything else KY has to offer. Get to know the associations beforehand by reading this Guide!

One highlight of the fall, and your KY years, is Mursujaiset . The 24-hour experience is an academic baptism for all new BIZ students, but we won’t reveal too much beforehand! Save the date, 4.9. (and maybe the day after), because this is something you do not want to miss.

AUTUMN FESTIVAL

The highlight of October, and the week you get to take your brand new overalls out for a stroll for the first time, is the Autumn Festival . The Festival begins with the traditional pub crawl III-kierros which is followed by the glamorous, simultaneously-held Boston Night and Masters’ Night . The week culminates in the legendary Sillis , which truly is something you don’t want to miss.

ANNUAL BALL WEEK

The most amazing week of the year takes place in the early spring when it’s time to celebrate KY’s birthday! Next year, KY celebrates its amazing 115-year journey with elegant festivities during Annual Ball Week . The week kicks off with an etiquette training, goes onto the Annual Ball sitz par-

ty and Annual Ball Brunch , and ends on the highest of notes: the glorious Annual Ball Of course, the party doesn’t end there and the ever-so-adventurous Sillis makes sure we get to celebrate our beloved KY all day and all night.

WAPPU

Wappu is a student’s Christmas, New Year’s Eve and birthday, all wrapped into one. KY Wappu is filled with various events throughout the weeks before the actual highlight. Wappu Eve is full of spectacular events and KY arrives with style in a Wappu Parade to watch Havis Amanda get its graduation cap, after spending the day at Wappu Terrace and Pre-Manta . The celebration culminates in KY’s Wappukuntis . After a night of partying, why should you stop there? The morning after, students head to Ullis to enjoy the celebration with friends, and sparkling refreshments flow all day long.

FEEL GOOD WEEKS

Even though feeling good should be a constant state of mind, we here at KY want to put extra emphasis on it during twice-a-year organised Feel Good Weeks. Mindfulness, cooking classes, or exercise advice are just some of the opportunities during the weeks, and the program varies. These opportunities are planned to balance your life between studies, relieve stress, and inspire you to try out these activities during regular weeks too.

COMPANY EXCURSIONS

KY’s associations such as subject clubs organise numerous excursions during the academic year. Make sure to join them as they are a great way to meet the company representatives in person and to ask them about the possibilities they have to offer. Excursions are a great way to make a good first impression on your future employer!

KUNTIS PARTIES

Kuntis parties are one of the highlights of the KY year. KY’s Kuntis Parties bring together your fellow students and they are organised at Helsinki’s best night clubs. At a Kuntis, you can enjoy student-priced drinks, meet new people, and listen to live music from some of the most exciting artists in Finland.

LAULUILTAS AND SITZ PARTIES

A lauluilta is a dinner party with long traditions. During these nights, traditional songs from KY’s own songbook, Kiljukaula , are sung and usually a three-course dinner with wines and schnaps is enjoyed. A Lauluilta is one of the best ways to get to know more about the traditions and roots of KY, so be sure to check out Aveclauluilta this fall!

At KY, sitz culture lives strong as well. Like Lauluiltas, Sitz parties are academic dinner parties as well, but with their own traditions and manners. For instance, people usually wear overalls at Sitz parties, but

dress a bit fancier to a Lauluilta. Be sure to attend Harkkasitsit this fall to get to know more about KY’s sitz culture.

PUB CRAWLS

Pub crawls (approt in Finnish) are all about having fun in good company. They are typical student events where people from different cities and universities gather in one city to tour different pubs and bars with their friends.

KY organises two pub crawls annually – one in October during the Autumn Festival and one in April. III-kierros takes place along the routes of tram number 3 and the legendary Hukkaputki introduces students to the metro tunnels of Helsinki. Search for Hukkaputki or III-kierros on KY’s YouTube to get a grasp of what’s to come. In addition, there are organised rides to various pub crawls around Finland.

Mursu Passport

Make sure to use your Mursu Passport to immerse yourself in KY’s culture, traditions, events, and associations throughout the autumn semester!

At the beginning of the Orientation Week, every Mursu will get a Mursu Passport

The Mursu Passport guides you through the world of KY with various tasks, such as attending an info evening , participating in Mursujaiset , and visiting Espilä . By completing these tasks, Mursus will gain the right to wear the KY cockade, which turns your graduation cap into an Economist’s cap (“kauppatieteilijän lakki” in Finnish), alongside other unique prizes.

Throughout the autumn, you’ll explore the culture, traditions, events, and other important contributors to KY. The goal of the passport isn’t just to attend as many parties as possible, but to encourage you to try different activities and discover those that interest you the most. Additionally, you’ll meet fascinating people who will make your study years unforgettable.

Code of Conduct

KY is an amazing community full of people from diverse backgrounds, and our greatest strength lies in our members. By working together with mutual respect and shared values, we ensure that KY remains a meaningful, safe and inclusive community for every kylteri. Therefore, the Code of Conduct outlines the principles that guide our everyday actions within the KY community.

KY’s Code of Conduct is a document that summarises the principles and policies we expect every KY member to follow. The Code of Conduct helps prevent harassment and encourages members to take action if they witness inappropriate or uncomfortable actions.

The Code of Conduct applies to all KY members, KY employees, attendees at KY events, partners of KY, and people who hold a position of trust at KY or in an association operating under KY. These principles should be followed in all kinds of interactions between members of the community, whether they are carried out live or remotely. Above all, we want KY members to feel safe and empowered to advocate for themselves. Read more at ky.fi/code-of-conduct :

Here are some tips on how to conduct yourself at events and day-to-day student life to ensure a good and safe experience for everyone:

ö Make yourself visible and introduce yourself when approaching someone new.

ö Ask for consent. May I join you? Can I get you a drink? Is it okay if I give you a hug?

ö Be polite and direct when communicating with other people. For example, “Thank you, I really appreciate that” or “That makes me feel uncomfortable, please stop doing that”

ö Respect people’s privacy, decisions and personal space. Not everyone wants to for example be filmed or photographed, drink alcohol, or have even light physical contact with other people.

ö Help your peers when needed, and don’t flirt with someone who needs care. Furthermore, if someone is having a hard time communicating or can’t take care of themselves, they can’t consent to sexual interactions.

If you spot a situation that seems to go against our Code of Conduct or where intervention could be needed, here are some ways to help:

ö Delegate the situation to the event organiser or bouncer and have them take the lead in breaking up the situation.

ö Directly confront the situation if you feel safe to do so. Ask if everything is okay or calmly inform the person violating the rules that their behavior is not acceptable.

ö Create a distraction by, for example, pretending you’re a friend of the person getting harassed and create an opportunity for them to leave the scene.

ö Document the situation, since filming or writing down what’s happening can be useful later on.

ö If none of these help, wait the situation out and check on the person when the situation itself has passed.

ö In case of emergency, always call 112. READ THE CODE OF CONDUCT!

Probba

Probba, the Student Association of Aalto University School of Business, Mikkeli campus, is a tight-knit community for "Babas", students of the International Business Programme. With its unique curriculum structure and strong international focus, Probba fosters a vibrant environment where students from diverse backgrounds can thrive. As an integral part of KY, Probba bridges the gap between the Mikkeli and Otaniemi campuses, fostering a seamless transition for Babas graduates to begin their master's studies in Otaniemi!

WHAT IS PROBBA?

Probba is the Student Association of Aalto University School of Business, Mikkeli campus, the home for students who attend the International Business Programme (BScBA). Our students are called " Babas ", and the reason behind this nickname dates back to 1989, when the programme was still titled "BBA". We are a tight-knit community; hence, we proudly named our people "Probba" - the Latin term "for BBA", "ProBBA". Leading this community is the Probba Board, which takes care of every facet of our student life.

PROBBA AND KY

Probba is an independent part of KY; our relationship grows stronger when Babas graduate from Mikkeli, bring their spirit to Otaniemi for master’s degree, and join the Ky community there. Probba is invited to many KY’s events, such as Mursulaiva and Wappu . The same applies to KY when they travel from Espoo to Mikkeli to join Probba's Mikkeli Road Trip .

The KY Board has a portfolio for Probba-related affairs, while on the Probba Board, the most prominent members in building cooperation with KY are the Project Coordinator and the President.

OUR PROGRAMME

What is special about our programme is that we follow a curriculum model of three-week modules, taking one course at a time and finishing it within three weeks. This minimises the possibility of procrastination and requires intensive concentration on our studies.

Our programme is approximately 2,5 years: we spend two years in Mikkeli and one semester abroad. During the study abroad period, students have various choices for exchange destinations, ranging from the Far East to South America, providing a long list of top partner universities.

After graduation, our students are automatically offered study rights for the master’s programmes in Otaniemi. Prestigious professors from all around the world come

to teach at Mikkeli, reflecting our programme name: International Business. English is the most spoken language on our campus - both in academic life and daily conversations - to enhance an international environment and inclusivity among all students, no matter where they come from.

OUR COMMUNITY

Having a small community turns out to be a wonderful factor that strengthens the bond among students. We are a big family where we know everybody, study, and have fun together. With only around 150 students on the campus, and more than one-third of them already non-Finnish students, we embrace a highly international spirit. Internationality and diversity are the signatures of our community, and the Probba Board itself consists of students from multiple backgrounds and is re-elected every year to welcome more diversity to our community administration. The Mikkeli campus has become a cozy home not only for Babas but also for exchange students who hold Mikkeli dear even after only a short stay. The peaceful town of Mikkeli is in a fever of joined culture and friendship across nations, and as our programme is broadening our reach, we get more diversity than ever before.

STUDENT LIFE

Despite the intense study load, extracurricular activities in Mikkeli never cease to be lively. Apart from attending annual events hosted by the Probba Board, such as the Ribbon Skate , Mikkeli Boat Trip , Orientation Week , and Grand Annual Ball , students enjoy singing out traditional songs at Nesu-Probba’s sitz parties , gathering up for board games in the board game club , recharging their energy by FC Probba's futsal, exploring the beauty of Finnish winter during SkiBBA's skiing trip

Ganos, or shouting "Oi Mikkeli!" enthusiastically (and proudly) every mid-week at Pentti Bar - just to name a few student clubs. Nature in Mikkeli never fails any Babas; winter provides a wonderful opportunity for skiing, ice-skating, or the very "Finnish" ice swimming, while the lovely summer makes walks in the woods, sports at Pankalampi beach, and long-distance cycling very tempting.

BABAS ALUMNI

As Babas graduate and continue their life everywhere in the world, many still come back to Mikkeli to reminisce about the good old days they once shared with their friends. Mikkeli Mafia became an honorary title granted to the graduates who have a strong connection with Mikkeli's alumni community.

"You can meet Mikkeli alumni anywhere on this vast Earth", a professor teaching this programme for years once said. "I met this guy when I was in a remote area in this farfetched country, whom I found very familiar. I asked him, “Are you a Mikkeli graduate?", and do you know what he said? 'Oi Mikkeli!' - in the middle of nowhere!" Whether you’re a future Baba, current student, or alumnus, you’re always part of the Probba family.

A new wind is blowing on our campus with the arrival of the next generation - Baba 25s. Always remember, our dear fuksis, that we are ready to welcome you all with a warm heart and wide-open arms. Come write your chapter in the story of Mikkeli.

Subcommittees

KY’s three subcommittees are at the heart of our community. In addition to bringing people together through organising events for the whole KY, all of the three subcommittees have their own traditions and tight communities. Many former members look back at their subcommittee years with great fondness as friendships formed in subcommittees last for lifetimes.

KUJ, SUB OR NESU? Joining a Subcommittee and their events is a great way to make new friends and lasting memories. IMAGE: NESU-KY

KUJ

KUJ , KUJ, more formally Kulttuurijaosto, is the Cultural Subcommittee of KY. For decades, KUJ has ensured that KY students get their fair share of parties and events— and will continue to do so for many years to come. The most notable events KUJ organises include parties like Sillis, Club Lagoon, and many more. In September, KUJ will welcome you to the student community at Mursujaiset, a 24-hour ordeal for new students— for which you should already brace yourself. Along with organising traditional KY events, KUJ is responsible for the dol-

lar-green overalls. You can spot KUJ members by their fur-collared overalls.

KUJ forms a tight-knit community where former board members often remain active even years after graduation. As a member of KUJ, you become part of something much larger than just student life—you’ll find yourself at the heart of student culture. The door opens once, and only once—so, Mursu, choose wisely.

With events ranging from epic theme parties like Around the World Sitz and Road to Wappu to more laid-back hangouts like ice skating, KY-Sub is always up to something. Plus, don't forget our memorable Lapland and cottage trips for exchange students, or the always wild Mursulaiva for all new students!

Whether you dream of an international career and want to improve your cross-cultural skills, or simply wish to meet and make friends from all over the world, KY-Sub is the place to be! By joining Sub, you'll become part of an ever-growing, loving family that provides loads of support, long-lasting close relationships, and incredible memories from both public and internal events.

Committees

KY has four committees that are all led by members of the KY Office. Their responsibilities range from creating student culture and wellbeing to training our tutors and fostering master’s students. These committees also play a vital role in ensuring that all new students have a smooth landing into KY life!

KUVA CULTURE

KY’s calendar is filled with events to bring students together, strengthen our community, and create unforgettable memories. Behind many of these amazing events, from pub crawls and lauluiltas to the iconic Wappu Parade, is KY’s very own Cultural Committee, KUVA . KUVA’s mission is to preserve and promote KY’s unique student culture, always with great energy and in great company.

At the heart of the KY spirit, KUVA offers its members the opportunity to truly immerse themselves in student culture and make new acquaintances from the Aalto community. With strong teamwork and an enthusiastic group of friends, KUVA brings these events to life so that every KY member can enjoy a rich and lively student experience.

MC organises events where every master’s student or like-minded person can come to enjoy and meet people across all different majors. Even if you're just getting started with volunteering or returning for one last round of KY fun, our committee comprises a mix of seasoned actives and enthusiastic newcomers.

TC TUTORING

A mursu’s, marsu’s or exchange student’s first connection to KY and uni life is their very own tutor, and behind it all is the Tutor Committee, TC. TC recruits and trains the tutors who guide new students through orientation and into the world of unforgettable student life. The goal is to help tutors create a welcoming, fun and safe environment where new students can make friends and find their place in our community. TC also organises fun events for tutors like Tutor Cottage and Tutorlauluilta.

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to be behind the scenes of orientation or want to relive it once more while giving back, TC might just be the place for you.

Annual Ball Committee

KY’s Annual Ball, known for its glamour and elegance, is the crown jewel of KY’s Annual Ball Week. Each year, the chosen Annual Ball Committee adds a unique personal touch in creating the event, ensuring that the event remains both traditional and refreshingly distinct.

KY’s Annual Ball is the single most glamorous event of the year and the highlight of the Annual Ball week, held between the end of February and the beginning of March. The event cherishes KY’s centennial history and celebrates our strong community and its members.

The Annual Ball is organised by the Annual Ball Committee , which is chosen during the autumn. The committee is open to everyone regardless of their academic year or KY background. Usually, the committee consists of 7–9 members who all have different responsibilities, including the Chair. Responsibilities include, for example, catering, programme, invitations, corporate relations, and communications. Being part of the committee is an amazing opportunity to use your creativity and shape one of KY’s most prestigious traditions. It’s a half-year project but the memories last a lifetime.

While the Annual Ball is without a doubt a traditional event, each committee adds a personal touch to make it look like their own! The event is the crown jewel of KY where we dress up and enjoy the people around us.

SEE IT FOR YOURSELF!

Representative Council

The Representative Council (RepCo, edustajisto or “edari” in Finnish) is the highest decision-making body of KY. Its purpose is to make sure that KY is acting in the best interest of its members.

The Representative Council consists of KY members who are eager to have an influence on the actions of KY and the future of our dear community. Whereas the KY office takes care of the daily operations and development at KY, the Representative Council sets the broader frame to guide said operations. The Council determines what KY is, what it stands

for, and what KY actually does today and in the years to come. RepCo operates at the very heart of KY, which makes it a great viewpoint to all that’s happening in our community!

The Representative Council operates through meetings, which are held approximately once a month at the School of Business. The RepCo also organises meeting

after-works and other leisure events to balance the work of the Council members and to get them acquainted with each other. The actual decisions of The Representative Council are made in the meetings, but ultimately they are only the culmination of council work – a lot of hours go into preparation, discussion, and planning as well.

The Representative Council is elected every two years: the next Representative Council elections will be held in the fall of 2025 concurrently with the elections of the Representative Council of our student union, AYY. The current Representative Council was elected in 2023 and it consists of 21 members and 41 deputy members from both Otaniemi and Mikkeli. The current Council operates fully in English.

HOW CAN I JOIN?

Run as a candidate, or at least vote, in the Council Elections this autumn!

02 ö

Come and attend a Representative Council meeting – all KY members are welcome!

03 ö

Keep an eye out for upcoming meetings and previous decisions on KY’s social media.

04 ö

Still, the heart of the magazine and podcast is the diverse groups of writers, hosts, illustrators, and photographers, who are recruited before the making of each print magazine.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN?

Do you know your way with words or know how to take a shot with a story? Do you enjoy illustrating or have an interest in testing your drawing skills in the context of print media? Or do you just happen to be curious about the field? University studies are a combination of freedom and responsibility: you can create your own timetable and focus on what interests you, but you are also accountable for your choices. In any situation, studying shouldn’t be overly stressful. If problems arise or you happen to have any questions, you can always rely on support from the university, KY or your subject club. Turn the page to learn more about your future studies! ö ö ö

Studying at Aalto BIZ

Studying at a university is quite different from your past studies: there is no strict curriculum unless you decide to create one for yourself. Now you have the freedom to choose which courses to attend and how to build your individual timetable! This freedom comes with great responsibility – you must ensure that you complete all the courses required for your degree.

The time it takes to finish your degree doesn’t depend only on your studying methods and planning but also on your individual life situation. While the typical target time for completing both your Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees is five years, changes in your life circumstances can affect this timeline. Working, going on an international exchange, or starting a family, for example, may slow down your studies. Conversely, clear scheduling and a goal-oriented attitude could help you graduate more quickly.

STUDYING AT THE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS

You study at Aalto BIZ (Aalto University School of Business) , which is a part of Aalto University. Aalto University was formed in 2010 when three independent universities –Helsinki School of Economics , Helsinki University of Technology, and the University of Art and Design Helsinki – merged into one. Today, the university consists of six relatively autonomous schools.

You’re free to attend courses or even complete your minor studies in any of the

schools within the university. To make it easier, there are several multidisciplinary programs available. Additionally, Aalto University is continuously striving to improve collaboration between its schools. It is also possible to include an internship in both the Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, providing a great opportunity to gain practical work experience.

Studying methods used and required during your studies vary between courses and teachers. The most important thing to keep in mind is that the teachers won’t give you ready-made answers but rather a broad toolkit to use to solve the problems presented to you. University studies aim to teach you problem-solving skills and give you new points of view on perhaps already familiar topics.

In addition to lectures, most courses include assignments, small group teaching, or exercise sessions. Teamwork and case presentations are both common ways to learn and work, helping you get accustomed to the working methods you’ll likely encounter in your future career. Most courses conclude with an exam, but often, the exam isn’t the

The structure of the master’s studies at Aalto School of Business depends on your Master’s Programme.

sole basis for your final grade – cases and assignments may have a significant impact on your final grade as well.

BACHELOR’S DEGREE

Your university-level business studies will begin with the Bachelor’s degree. At Aalto BIZ, this lower university degree consists of common core and methodological studies, specialization and minor studies, language studies as well as elective studies. The Bachelor’s degree consists of 180 ECTS , which is equivalent to three years of studying, by recommendation. At the end of your first year of studies, you will be asked to pick a specialization area chosen from seven options: Accounting , Information & Service Management (ISM), Economics , Finance , Management , Marketing , and Business Law. This area of specialization will make up approximately one-third of your Bachelor’s degree studies and define the area on which you will write your Bachelor’s thesis – your first step into the world of research and academic writing.

MASTER’S DEGREE

The Bachelor’s degree might be a stepping stone into corporate life. However, you should bear in mind that most employers, especially in Finland, prefer or even require their employees to have a Master’s degree to be able to acquire higher positions within the company. For this reason, it is not surprising that most business students opt to continue their studies until having finished both their Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. Many choose to deepen their knowledge in their Bachelor’s specialization area, but it is not uncommon to switch to an entirely different major, either. In addition to Aalto BIZ’s Master’s programs, there are also interdisciplinary Aalto programs to choose from.

The two-year Master’s degree is worth 120 ECTS and includes advanced specialization studies, minor and elective studies as well as the pro gradu thesis. The pro gradu thesis follows the same principles of academic writing as the Bachelor’s thesis but it is significantly more extensive. Some students choose to get more familiar with working life while wrapping up their studies – it is possible to conduct your pro gradu research as a commission project for an interesting company. That’s basically getting paid to complete your studies!

QUESTIONS? ANSWERS!

At the beginning of your studies, your tutor will explain everything you need to know about your future studies and student life. Remember that you can also always ask your professor if you have any questions in mind. The professors can be contacted via email or face-to-face during their weekly reception hours – just remember to check the times beforehand! More often than not, the professors are quick to answer your questions.

The Everyday Life of a Student

It’s easier to enjoy student life when your day-to-day necessities are in order. This section aims to answer practical questions about housing, income, and healthcare. Fortunately, there is no need to worry. We students are pretty well taken care of – our student union AYY, the social security institution KELA, and the Finnish Student Health Service YTHS, amongst others, are here to help us.

HOUSING

AYY owns apartments that are rented out to students of Aalto University. However, AYY does not have adequate housing for all Aalto University students so you should also search for an apartment through other channels.

First-year students and students moving from outside the metropolitan area have priority in the housing queue. You can apply for housing as soon as you receive the confirmation of your place of study. A so-called freshman point is available for AYY’s shared apartment queues. To receive the freshman point, you must apply for housing no later than in July or December, depending on when your studies begin.

APPLYING FOR AYY’S HOUSING

Familiarise yourself with AYY’s housing on ayy.fi/en/housing

Read about the application process on ayy. fi/en/how-to-apply-for-housing.

Apply for AYY’s housing through the Domo system: domo.ayy.fi .

Questions concerning housing are addressed to AYY’s Housing Office:

ö Contact forms ayy.fi/fi/asuminen/ kysy-asumisesta

ö Phone +358 50 520 9410

ö Address Otakaari 11, 02150 Espoo

FINANCIAL AID FOR STUDENTS

Student financial aid is a social benefit that consists of three parts: study grant, housing supplement , and student loan.

To receive student financial aid, you must gain at least 5 ECTS per supported month. However, the minimum is 20 ECTS per academic year, regardless of the number of months for which you receive student financial aid. In addition, since student financial aid is a social benefit, the amount of your income affects how many months of student financial aid you are entitled to during the year.

Students who begin their academic studies for the first time in 2025 have 30 months of financial aid for completing the lower university degree. When students have completed their Bachelor’s degree and continue to the Master’s degree, they are entitled to 21 additional months of financial aid. However, a student can use no more than 48 financial aid months in total to complete both degrees. Further information at kela.fi/opintotuki.

In recent years, there have been many changes to student financial aid and upcoming changes will occur, so remember to follow Kela’s website and ask if anything is unclear to you!

MONITOR YOUR INCOME

If you work or get a summer job among studies and earn more than the income limits of student financial aid allow, you need to return the extra financial aid on your own initiative or cancel the aid in advance for the number of months necessary. Read more at kela.fi/ opintotuki-omat-tulot

You should avoid using financial aid months unnecessarily, as you will not get back the months already used, even if you still have studies left. Thus, do not use your financial aid for sick leave or a holiday! If your sick leave is prolonged, you can apply for a sickness allowance. Find more information at kela.fi/opintotukijos-sairastut .

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

FINNISH STUDENT HEALTH SERVICE (YTHS)

The Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS or YTHS in Finnish) takes care of university students’ health. You can always make an appointment with FSHS when you are in need of health services. Since the beginning of 2021, the students entitled to FSHS services such as yourself have paid the healthcare fee, which is 36,80€ per semester, to Kela. The fee needs to be paid unprompted (you won’t be sent an invoice regarding it) twice a year and you can pay the fee at oma.kela.fi

If YTHS (FSHS) is closed or you cannot make an appointment, you can always use your own municipal health center or emergency services.

During your first year of studies, you will receive a request to participate in the electronic health survey of FSHS (SÄTKY) which is designed to review the health of first-year students. It is very important that you respond to it. The survey will be sent to you via the online service Self and registration is needed. After responding to the survey, you will receive an invitation to visit a public health nurse and/or dental care if necessary.

FSHS health centers in the metropolitan area:

01 ö Otaniemi: Otakaari 12, Espoo

Aalto BIZ Career Services

WE HELP WITH JOB-SEARCHING AND CAREER PLANNING

Career Services at Aalto University School of Business help students prepare for working life by enhancing their job search skills and facilitating their employment to relevant jobs. Our aim is to be there for you from the very beginning of your studies until graduation.

Quotes from our Student Surveys:

I think it is super that JobTeaser has a lot of ‘hidden jobs’ available. Even big companies and organisations post sometimes jobs only there and this gives a huge advantage to Aalto students during these challenging times.

The Aalto Summer Job Fair helped me land my summer job! For us immigrants, those can be really hard to find and it only happened because I was able to have a conversation and connect with the responsible hiring manager.

Thank you, you have helped me a lot! I got a lot of useful information that has helped in my advancing my career.

Career Services are based on long-term and diverse corporate relations and tight connections with our students. Students’ opinions are very important to us, and a yearly selected student council from School of Business students is also sparring our activities.

Imagine starting your studies like stepping aboard a ship. A bit wobbly at first, with a sea of opportunities ahead. You’ve got a map (your courses), a crew (your friends), and a destination (a future career). What’s missing? A compass. That’s where we come in.

Suomen Ekonomit is your compass — quiet but reliable. We’re the network of 55,000+ business professionals who once sat exactly where you are now. When you joined KY, you also joined us automatically as a student member. That means we’re already onboard with you, even if you haven’t noticed it yet.

Whether it’s navigating your first job contract, finding the right salary info, or just figuring out what you want to be when you “grow up” (spoiler: it’s okay not to know yet), we’re here. We offer career coaching, legal help, and job market insights tailored for business students like you. And the best part? It’s all included in your membership.

So while you dive into student life, whether that’s through sitsits, group work, or surviving your first 8 am lecture — remember that there’s a compass in your pocket. Use it when things get foggy. That’s what we’re here for.

Set sail with confidence!

Here for YOU!

As you navigate through your business student life, KY is here to support you every step of the way. The physical core of KY is our office, Espilä, where you can get anything from KY merch to helpful, useful advice. Here are some of KY’s Executive Director’s tips and insights into KY and the first steps of student life.

Congratulations on getting into Aalto BIZ, and welcome to KY! Your upcoming years will be filled with unique experiences, new people and hopefully some course credits. You will also have the chance to learn new skills, discover new sides of yourself, and hopefully find a warm community along with life-long memories, friendships, and connections.

Although there are many different roles and positions within KY, all our employees and volunteers share the same underlying goal: we simply want to offer you the best, most memorable years of your life. Whether you prefer the fells of Lapland or the sunny Mediterranean seas, performing on stage or mastering event organisation, or simply enjoying the KY ride, our goal is to help make your KY dreams come true. At the KY office you can find eight employees – me included – working towards this goal, along with both KY Board and KY Foundation.

The KY office, a.k.a. Espilä , is located at Konemiehentie 4 – not too far from the Business School building! Whether you want to have a cup of free coffee, drench yourself in KY merch from head to toe, get help on KY related issues, or advice on volunteering, Es-

pilä is the place to be. You can check Espilä’s opening hours from our website.

Having read the Guide this far, you’ve probably noticed that community (one of our favorite words) is at the very heart of KY. There are thousands of us, and with such a massive amount of people it is vital that we take care of not only yourselves but others too. To start your mastery of acceptable behaviour in a student community, I encourage you to take a thorough look at KY’s Code of Conduct, also found on our website. Code of Conduct will offer you some pointers on how to best be a pleasant member of your new community. You will get far by respecting other people’s personal space, boundaries, and opinions, and offering a helping hand or a kind word whenever possible!

Finding your own path at KY might happen quickly or take a bit more time. Finding your way to Espilä, however, is almost guaranteed to be quick and easy. Come drop by, say hi and have a cup of coffee with us! Who knows, maybe you’ll gain valuable insight on student life while visiting… Either way, we are always here for you!

BOARD ’25. The current KY Board is made up of eight members: Otava Tuomi (top left), Vilhelmiina Vierjoki, Thomas Febvre, Otto Lehto (bottom left), Emma Karppinen, Hector Björklund, Elsa-Maria Oksanen, and Milla Äikää.

KY Board

A band of KY members are selected annually to lead KY’s path forward. This year, the Executive Board has eight members who help the KY community.

The KY Board is the face and voice of all KY members. The Board works almost fulltime, which means you might not see them during lectures. Board members spend their days together figuring out KY’s most pressing questions, representing the organization and voicing members’ opinions. Additionally, each board member works on their own duties in their sectors.

The Board runs the ongoing operations at KY. Some of them are more planned, like taking care of the finances and recruitment. Other duties are more emergent, such as culture projects or resource mapping. A large chunk of time is designated to represent KY. This includes speaking on behalf of members in Aalto University decision-making, advocating to stakeholders, keeping in touch with our fellow business students abroad and in Finland, and a lot more.

In addition, each board member has two or more specific responsibilities. The following pages will present you with what each of our board members does on a regular basis.

The Chair of the Board Hector Björklund splits his time between leading the board, working together with the executive director and the vice-chair in managing things at the KY Office, and representing KY in various places and positions. He is also part of the KY Foundation Board.

The Vice-Chair, also responsible for finances and premises, Otava Tuomi is to Hector like Robin to Batman. He steps in whenever needed, in addition to having his own responsibilities like securing a permanent home for KY in Otaniemi and taking care of the board's budget.

Regardless of our responsibility – each and every one of us is here for you! We’re passionate about our community and love to meet and chat with KY members. Say hi when you see us around, or drop us a message if you need help. We are here to make your university journey an unforgettable one.

Academic Affairs

How are students represented at the School of Business? Is someone looking out for my best interest in academic decision-making? That’s exactly what we in the Academic Affairs sector at KY are here for!

Academic issues are an important part of student life. This is why we aim to address challenges and drive forward changes that benefit our members. KY’s Academic Affairs sector is led by two board members who focus on students’ academic wellbeing – this year, Vilhelmiina Vierjoki and Thomas Febvre

KY members are fortunate – at the School of Business, decision-makers are often eager to get student input and hear student perspectives. That’s why student representatives from the KY Board and subject clubs are often asked to join and contribute to new projects.

Additionally, there are other student representatives called hallopeds, who are involved in decision-making at both business school and university level. Together with the Academic Affairs board members from each of the ten subject clubs, they work tirelessly toward the shared goal of academic wellbeing. This advocacy work is mainly carried out in meetings with the school’s management.

This all might sound a bit ambiguous –and sometimes, it is. At KY, the Academic Affairs round table, formed by all student advocates, aims to make student advoca-

cy more tangible and bring it closer to our members. One example is the Tea and BIZcuits event in the Business School lobby, where hallopeds and board members gather student feedback while serving coffee, tea, and biscuits.

HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?

We want to emphasise the importance of giving course feedback at the end of each course.

Additionally, we encourage students to apply for subject clubs and even become hallopeds.

Application periods for these opportunities take place later in autumn.

If you have anything on your mind, don’t hesitate to contact KY’s Academic Affairs sector. We will make sure you are heard! <3

COMMUNICATION IS KEY. Emilia Ala-Jääski, Saana Rauvala, Emma Karppinen, and Aapo Rissanen work with communications at KY.

Communications

What is happening at KY? Where should you be and when? How do I get involved in student life? If you are feeling unsure, don’t worry – KY’s Communications Sector is here to keep you in the loop about everything going on in our vibrant community.

There’s always something happening at KY, and with so much information, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. That’s where the Communications sector steps in! From updating our official channels to training volunteers in using them, we handle everything related to communication. We make sure that business students get the newest updates on events, studies, volunteering and career opportunities.

As the largest sector in the KY Office, communications brings together a wide range of expertise – from branding and visual design to editing the Kylteri magazine and managing IT. Board member Emma Karppinen and Communications Coordinator Saana Aho are responsible for communicating everything that is happening in our community. Art Director Saana Rauvala oversees all visuals at KY, working on graphics ranging from campaign graphics to designing layout

of Kylteri magazine. The AD works closely with Emilia Ala-Jääski , the Editor-in-Chief of Kylteri, who manages all aspects of our student magazine. Meanwhile, IT Coordinator Aapo Rissanen manages KY’s IT systems and oversees new technology projects. We are happy to answer any questions you may have about our areas of expertise. By following KY’s official communications channels (listed on page 7), you will stay upto-date with all that is happening at KY.

Corporate Relations

What do I want to do when I graduate? What companies offer summer jobs for business students? How will I land my first internship position? We are here to help you find answers to these questions and many more!

As students, career is an integral part of our lives for most of us. Summer jobs and internships offer an experience that is worth its weight in gold. Therefore, KY wants to help you reach your best potential and jumpstart your career! KY is dedicated to showing you the best career opportunities and options available to help you land your dream job.

KY’s Corporate Relations sector consists of Board Member Elsa-Maria Oksanen and Corporate Relations Coordinator Jaakko Koskinen . Their job is to make work life seem more approachable and display opportunities for seeing what work life holds for KY’s students. KY’s mission is to bring companies and students together in a manner that benefits both. KY offers students a lot – students discover which companies are the most interested in us. They also gain insight into what lies beneath each company’s surface. Furthermore, students can network with company representatives, giving them an edge when applying for jobs. In return, companies have the opportunity to identify and attract KY’s top talent.

KY offers a diverse set of ways for companies to get involved with students. We aim for our portfolio to consist of relevant

and interesting partner companies, such that every student can find suitable opportunities for themselves. We especially emphasise face-to-face encounters between students and companies. Companies are also present on our dollar green overalls, social media, and print media. In addition, the finest events of KY wouldn’t be possible without the support of our partners.

Remember that it’s never too early to get hands-on experience in working life. Don’t forget to join the exclusive KY Career groups on Telegram and LinkedIn (find these listed on page 7). This way, you will get an edge in your career by hearing about the best opportunities first. Come meet us in Espilä or send a message to us! We are more than happy to tell you more about corporate relations at KY!

THE CORPORATE DUO. Jaakko Koskinen and Elsa-Maria Oksanen lead KY’s corporate relations.
COMMUNITY. Maria Saarinen, Julius Hannula, Sten Tartu,Milla Äikää, Otto Lehto, and Thomas Febvre take care of many KY community members.

Community

Every KY member is a part of our welcoming community, and we all partake in building it. KY’s community sector is the biggest and brightest consisting of culture, new students, student wellbeing, and clubs. This sector is also responsible for supporting and thanking our volunteers including clubs, project teams, subcommittees, and tutors.

WELLBEING

University years are often described as the best years of our lives – and no wonder why! However, alongside all the fun, everyone faces struggles and challenges from time to time. Supporting the wellbeing of our members is a top priority for KY, and one of the main tasks of KY Board member Thomas Febvre and Association Coordinator Sten Tartu together with KY’s very own Sports and Wellbeing Committee LiHy. Besides feeling good, it is crucial that each of us feels safe and respected in our community. KY wants to provide a safe and equal environment for everyone, and has created a set of rules for the type of behaviour we expect in everyday KY life. Be sure to check out our renewed Code of Conduct on ky.fi !

CULTURE

KY is committed to delivering the best student experience for all its members. Our Culture sector aims to make sure that everyone is welcome and appreciated in our community, and that there is always something fun waiting just around the corner. We aim to create opportunities for every student to find something they’re interested in, and that everyone finds their own place in this

huge community. KY is extremely proud of its wide array of volunteers and strong traditions, from our beloved Annual Ball week , Wappu and Autumn Festival to various Kuntis parties.

The Culture sector consists of the KY Board member responsible for culture, Otto Lehto and his partner-in-crime, Culture Producer, Julius Hannula . They work together with our beloved subcommittees KUJ , NESU-KY and KY-Sub, and also lead the Cultural Committee KUVA . As said before, our student culture would not be the same without our volunteers. Subcommittees and committees have over a hundred volunteers every year, and they play a huge part in our yearly traditions, and developing the student culture even further. Keep an eye out for information on various volunteer opportunities throughout the year – there might be something that catches your interest!

NEW STUDENTS

At KY, one of our top priorities is making sure new students feel warmly welcomed and easily become part of our community. The New Students sector ensures that your student life gets a smooth start by designating a trained tutor for you, organizing

orientation week, and cooperating with the School of Business. Being a mursu, marsu or an exchange student at KY is an experience of a lifetime that can’t be replicated anywhere else.

The sector is led by Otto Lehto, KY Board member responsible for new students, Maria Saarinen , the Tutor Coordinator at the School of Business and chair of the Tutor Committee, and Milla Äikää , KY Board member for Master’s students and chair of the Masters’ Committee. Their main goal is to make sure every new student at the School of Business and KY has an easy start. This effort involves everyone from KY Office members to association volunteers.

CLUBS

KY is the roof organization for around 60 associations, most of which are clubs. KY’s Association Coordinator Sten Tartu and the KY Board member responsible for clubs, Milla

Äikää , ensure that all clubs get as much support and guidance as they need.

KY’s clubs offer almost everything you could imagine, and play a key role in producing unforgettable experiences at KY. Anything from golf to wine tasting, skiing to investing... If you can come up with it, we most likely have a club for it!

However, if you feel like something is missing, or you just have an amazing new idea you want to try out, you are more than welcome to either start a project or found a club of your own! Just contact Sten and he will respond to any questions you might come up with!

ACTIVE COMMUNITY. At the heart of the KY Community are fun, communal events. IMAGE: SELMA KIURU

KY Foundation

KY Foundation helps students achieve their professional, study-related and extracurricular goals at the Aalto University School of Business.

The purpose of the KY Foundation is to enable the KY community to thrive, through supporting leisure activities, culture, sports, and the study success of business students at Aalto University. The KY Foundation supports students and associations both financially and through different resources like free spaces. With a yearly budget of approximately 1,7 million €, the KY Foundation works to ensure that Aalto University’s business students can enjoy the best student experience for years to come.

OVER 700,000 EUROS OF GRANTS AWARDED ANNUALLY

The KY Foundation offers annual grants and subsidies to the KY community totalling at over 700 000 €. This is distributed to different clubs and associations that provide students with activities, services, and leisure. But you don’t have to have a club or association to reap the benefits of the grants. We also give out grants to individual students, or groups of students who come up with great ideas for a new project or event. So come up with creative ways to share joy to your fellow students and apply for a grant from the KY Foundation to make your dream into a reality! We also help with starting up new clubs and associations, so if you have an idea for a new club, apply for a grant and

leave your mark in the KY community. The latest information on current subsidies can be found at KY Foundation’s website (kyfoundation.fi ) and the grant portfolio is developed according to students’ needs. All application forms, subsidy requirements and news are also posted on the website. Apply now!

FREE PREMISES FOR BUSINESS STUDENTS

KY Foundation provides students and KY’s associations free space to operate and organize events in. On the Otaniemi campus, the KY Office “ Espilä” and the party venue “ Saha” stand on opposite sides of Konemiehentie, providing KY members and associations space for different purposes. In addition we have a large event space in Betonimiehenkuja. Whether organizing larger meetings, parties or chilling with coffee, these buildings provide business students the space they need, all free of charge! The independent Kylteri magazine (kylteri.fi ) is also published by the KY Foundation.

STUDENT-LED DECISION-MAKING

Since the KY Foundation has such a big role in the KY community, it is important that

students are also the ones calling the shots. Decision making in the KY Foundation is led by the Executive Board and its Chairperson Weixin Niemi . The Board consists of a student majority and advisory members. The advisory members are top professionals in their fields of asset and real estate management and help ensure that the Foundation’s assets are managed in the best possible way. To ensure the Foundation keeps the students’ best interest at heart, the Board is overseen by the Supervisory Council which is made up of KY Association’s representative council members. The Foundation also employs a Managing Director Arttu Lääkkölä , who oversees the day-to-day operations.seen by the Supervisory Council which is made up of KY Association’s representative council members.
