I have found that it can be as simple as asking, "how are you doing" and really meaning it and listening to the answer. I believe that pouring into others is the most honorable part of my day and I wake up each day energized to do just that. My Mom and Dad taught me at a young age to never assume I know the path someone is walking. Asking questions, listening intently, and understanding when to lend a shoulder to cry on or celebrate a win is what makes me happy.

WHAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT RISK YOU TOOK AND WHY? Relocating from NY to Atlanta. We did it because we saw it as an opportunity to improve our future. We left behind all of our

family.

most of our family followed us here. My mother,

children, and a cousin and his family, all live in Atlanta. We still have many other relatives in the NY/NJ area and we visit with them regularly.

Joel Klein

Joel has worked in real estate for over 45 years. He started working for REIT on Wall Street in the 1970's. Then he worked for 3 insurance companies in acquisitions and asset management roles, and also corporate real estate.

Joel worked on all types of projects throughout the Southeast, traveling extensively. One of those companies relocated him to Atlanta in 1984 where he ran his own office and had over a dozen employees. One of the more well-known projects he worked on is the Atlanta Financial Center, which is the office complex that sits atop GA 400 in Buckhead. In 2009, he left the corporate world and started doing commercial brokerage.

Who do you look up to for inspiration or mentorship?

My 91 year old mother. I speak with her at least once each day. She got married at 18 and had me at 19. I grew up in "the projects" of East NY (Brooklyn) in a rough neighborhood. She, and my late father, made huge sacrifices for me, and my 2 younger brothers, so I could be the person I am today. I didn't always agree with her, but she was always right. And I still learn from her to this very day.

How do you keep your team or yourself motivated despite conflicts and obstacles?

I look at my wife of 42 years, my 2 married daughters, their husbands, and my 4 grandsons, and that motivates me. My wife and I, are very close with our children and grandchildren. We always try to set an example for them.

We cannot do that if we can't get up in the morning and feel motivated ourselves.
