Introduction

Discrete Architecture

Discrete architecture is definitely not a new topic, but the idea of how identical yet autonomous parts could be represented in a housing block – which is the most realistic and practical outcome. It concerns social, economic and political consequences of a shift towards full automation because in a world plagued with housing crisis where millions live without an adequate shelter, this project explores how production chain for architecture could produce housing more quickly and efficiently, and we’re not talking about automating the current housing structures, in this project we design for automation and there’s a difference in it.

Discourse

A discrete object, a part, or a building block creating architecture again, is not a new notion but more of a return to historical housing where natural stone or timber logs are used as the parts. Through analysing and cataloguing the scale and resolution of existing parts and building for instance the log house or the twig house and classifying according to their scale.

The limitation of today’s typical parts for example a brick is the limited patterns or forms that a brick can collectively produce. A brick cannot form a whole, only a section of a whole; a wall, a pier, a floor. Through these exercises we were able to pick and decide on the scale and resolution of our parts. It is a set of parts with an unfamiliar architectural scale which we are proposing has the ability to create parts that through additive measure can create vastly different wholes.
