SCOUT MOTTO Scouts/Guides – Taiyar (Be Prepared) By being physically strong, morally straight and mentally awake.

Be-Prepared: This means you are always in a state of readiness in mind and body to do your DUTY. Be Prepared in Mind by having disciplined yourself to be obedient to every order, and also by having thought out beforehand any accident or situation that might occur, so that you know the right thing to do at the right moment, and are willing to do it.

Be Prepared in Body by making yourself strong and active and able to do the right thing at the right moment, and do it.

The Scout Motto "Be Prepared" denotes a way of life and an attitude of mind, which would enable you to get proficient in practical skills, help you face challenges in life and also to be in readiness to be of service to others.

This can be achieved by being physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.

The Motto is also a reminder for you to be always in a state of readiness in mind and body to be able to do your duty and to help others even in times of unprecedented calamity.

SCOUT SIGN

The Scout sign identifies you as a Scout anywhere in the world. Use it whenever you give the Scout Oath or Scout Law. The three upraised fingers stand for the three parts of the Scout Oath. The thumb and little finger together stand for the bond between all Scouts.

The sign is given at the time of Investiture and at the time of renewal of the Scout Promise. The Scout Sign is given by raising the right hand, in level with the shoulder, palm to front with three fingers stretched together and thumb closing on the little finger.

SCOUT SALUTE  The three-finger salute is used by members of Scout and Guide organizations around the world when greeting other Scouts and in respect of a national flag at ceremonies.  In most situations, the salute is made with the palm face out, the thumb holding down the little finger, and with the fingertips on the brow of the head.  Scout Salute is an expression of mutual esteem and good-will.  It is a mark of respect and good manners. It is the privilege and not a service act.  It is an outward expression of the spirit of discipline and respect for the other.  The manner of saluting indicates the standard of discipline and the state of training and the morale in the Unit.  It is the privilege of the one who sees first to salute first.

SCOUT SALUTE

Meaning of the three fingers In his book, Scouting for Boys, Robert Baden-Powell chose the three-finger salute for Scouts to represent the three aspects of the Scout Promise: 1. Honour God and the King/ the country 2. Help Others 3. Obey the Scout/Guide Law

SCOUT SALUTE  Salute is given by raising the right arm smartly to the level of the shoulder, palm to the front with the three fingers stretched together, the first touching the forehead one inch above the right eyebrow and the thumb closing on the little finger and after that the arm, cutting to the front is quickly and smartly brought down curling the fingers.  Normally all movements are done to the timing of four counts e... one, two, three, four counting mentally.  "One - Raise the arm and salute, "Two, three Pause. "Four" Bring the arm down.  The salute, as the sign, reminds members of the promise taken  The 3 fingers held upright represents the 3 fold Promise  Etiquette is to allow the other person to take the salute before bringing down the arm  Breaking off On command a smart right turn, a side step and march off breaking the formation (a continuous movement).

LEFT HAND SHAKE

 The left-handed Scout handshake is a formal way of greeting other Scouts of both genders used by members of Scout and Guide organizations around the world when greeting other Scouts.  The handshake is made with the hand nearest the heart and is offered as a token of friendship.  In most situations, the handshake is made firmly, without interlocking fingers, and many organizations only use this handshake when both people are in uniform.

LEFT HAND SHAKE

Shake greeting with a smile shaking hands with left and saluting with the right is a specialty of the movement.

Founder conceived left hand shake as a form of greeting the members of the movement.

The idea originated from an incident in his military career in South Africa.

When Col. Baden-Powell entered the capital city of the Ashanti tribe in 1896, he was received by one of the chiefs, Prempeh I, who while greeting him formally extended his left hand.

B.-P. held out his right hand in return.

But the chief said "No, in my country, the bravest of the brave shakes with left hand."

The INDIAN NATIONAL FLAG  It is a horizontal tri colour of deep saffron (kesaria) at the top, white in the middle and dark green at the bottom in equal propotions.  The ratio of width of the flag to its length is 2 to 3.  In the centre of the white band is a navy blue wheel which represents The ASHOKA CHAKRA with 24 spokes.  The CHAKRA should preferably be screen printed on both sides of the flag or otherwise printed stencil or suitably embroidered on both sides in all cases.

 It was adopted in its present form during a meeting of the constituent assemble held on 22nd July 1947.  It was designed by PINGALI VENKAYYA.  The flag by law, is to be made of KHADI.  The manufacturing process and specification for the flag are laid out by the bureau of Indian standards.  The right to manufacture the flag is held by the Khadi development and village industries commission.  The usage of the flag is governed by the flag code of India and other laws.

Representations  Saffron:- courage, sacrifice and the spirit of renunciation  White :-honesty, truth, peace and purity  Green :-symbolic of prosperity, vibrance and life, faith and fertility  Ashoka Chakra :-wheel of the law of dharma, truth  Again the Wheel motion, The dynamism of peaceful change  24 spokes represents the 24 hours of the day.

Code Of Conduct

Being a National symbol, it is respected by every Indian.

There are certain do's and dont's laid down for common people regarding the Indian Flag.

• When the National flag is raised the saffron colour band should be at the top.

•No Flag or emblem should be placed either above the National flag or to its right •All the other flags to be placed to the left of the National Flag if they are hung in a line.

•When the National flag is carried out in a procession or parade, it shall be on the marching right, or in front of the center of the line, if there is a line of other flags •Normally the national flag should be flown over the important govt: buildings like the Rashtrapati Bhawan, The Parliament house, the Supreme Court of India, the High courts, the Secretariats, the Commissioner's office etc.

•The National flag or any imitations of it must not be used for purpose of trade, business or profession.

•The National flag should always be taken down in the evening at sun set.

 The Bharat Scouts and Guides Flag is in dark blue color.  The emblem in yellow colour is in the center of the flag with Ashoka Chakra in blue color.  The size of the Association flag is 180 cms in length and 120 cms in width.

KVS BSG CHENNAI DIVISION

 The emblem is 45 cms by 30 cms.  The size of the Group Flag, which is the same as above, shall be 120 cms X 80 cms with proportionate emblem 30 cms by 20 cms.

 The name of the group may be written in a yellow colour below the emblem in straight line.  The Fleur-de-lis is the International emblem of Scouting.  The super imposed trefoil is the International emblem of Guiding.  Ashoka Chakra is meant to emphasize the all-India character of the Movement.

 The flag is actually royal purple with the white fleurde-lis and rope is the flag for the World Organization of Scouting Movements (WOSM), headquartered in Switzerland.  The flag represents all member organizations of the WOSM in a like manner as the United Nations flag represents all member nations of the UN.  The flag is taken from the fleur-de-lis, or lily of the flower, which as the previous poster wrote, is found as part of the Scout emblem of every other nations’ Scouting organizations.

 The needle is also found frequently on compasses and pointing devices and points in the true direction, as Scouts should also be moving positively toward.  The two stars on the flag refer to truth and knowledge, the two most important elements found in the creeds, promises and oaths of all member organizations.  They also remind us of the stars in the sky and the outdoor element of Scouting.  The rope encircles the fleur-de-lis and a reminder of the true brotherhood of all WOSM members.  The rope is tied at the bottom in the reef knot, which is the most useful of all rope knots if tied properly and reminds all of our obligations to be of service to one another as well as to be useful.

 The World Guide Flag consists of the golden trefoil on a bright blue background.  It was adopted by the 6th World Conference in 1930, following a suggestion of South Africa. The design was prepared by FROKH KARI AAS of Norway.  At the 80th World community meeting held in March, 1991 it was agreed to adopt a new WORLD TREFOIL and WORLD FLAG. The World Guide Flag consists of the Golden World Trefoil on left upper corner on the bright blue field.

 The three leaves represent the three fold promise originally laid down by the Founder.  The flame represents the love for humanity.  The vein pointing upwards represents the compass needle pointing the way.  The two stars represent the Promise and Law.  The outer circle represents our worldwide association. The golden yellow Trefoil on a bright blue background represent the sun shining over the children of the world.

 A blaze of White on the lower right hand corner represents the peace that Girl Guides and Girl Scouts are striving to achieve.  The white blaze is crowned by three golden squares symbolic of the three fold Promise. The size of the flag will be in the ratio 3:2.  The World Guide Flag is flown at the World Centres, at the World Bureau and at all World Association events.

 Companies may carry the World flag in addition to their own National Flag.  The World Scout Flag/World Guide Flag may be used on appropriate occasions and when used they shall fly at lower level than the National Flag at its left, at higher level than the Bharat Scouts and Guides flag at its right.
