I am honored to welcome you to our Brunswick Sound Spectacular Marching Band Competition. Brunswick is certainly proud of this fine tradition that we have created over the years, and we are excited to share this experience with you. This competition has afforded us the opportunity to enjoy some of the strongest musical talent in the state.

I'm sure that this year will be no different.

Congratulations to all the participants and directors for their efforts to prepare for this evening. I especially want to thank the parents and volunteers who spend countless hours supporting their marching bands.

Without your dedication to these students, none of this would be possible.

Additionally, I want to take a moment to recognize our Brunswick Band Parent Organization. Year after year, they continue to provide resources, opportunities and support to our students. On behalf of our entire district, I want to say a special thank you to them.

Welcome to Brunswick High School, home of the Award Winning Marching Blue Devils! This year we celebrate the 40th Sound Spectacular Competition. It is with great pride that this tradition brings together the best student musicians from across the state, the amazing music programs our schools offer, and exemplifies dedication to music education.

In the spirit of competition, I encourage you to cheer on all of the marching bands, color guards, and the dedicated staff during each performance. Brunswick High School wishes you an outstanding competition and season! I know that each band will make their school and community proud! I want to express my appreciation to all band parents, but especially to the Brunswick Band Parent Organization for helping to make this event possible and for supporting our music program.

Welcome to Brunswick High School’s 40th Annual Sound Spectacular! We are excited to showcase amazing performances today, and we applaud each band’s tireless efforts to put on a wonderful show.

Sound Spectacular is a great opportunity to celebrate the value that music education provides for our students. OMEA events like this demonstrate high levels of commitment, dedication, discipline, and excellence, of which we can all be proud!

On behalf of the Brunswick Marching Blue Devils, we want to thank the Brunswick City School District’s staff and administration for their continued support. Additionally, we appreciate our band staff’s pursuit of excellence while instilling the love of music in our students. Lastly, we are grateful for the time and talents the Brunswick Band Parents Organization dedicates to the many aspects of our band program.

Danbury High School Laker Band (Isaiah Miller, Director) The 2023 Danbury Laker Band is excited that this is the first season the marching band is participating in OMEA-adjudicated marching band performances. They perform yearly at the Lakeside Memorial Day parade, Marblehead Perch Festival, and hosts the Danbury High School Cabaret.

Mogadore Wildcat Marching Band (Jonas Piskach, Director) The Mogadore Band Program, affectionately referred to as the 'Pride of Mogadore' has been a long-standing fixture within the Mogadore Community.

From their performances at the annual Mogadore Wildcat Band Show to football games and community performances- the band program is a mobile representation of what it means to be a Wildcat. Comprising of students grades 8-12, the band brings many students with various Fall extra-curriculars who make time to come together and make music on the field.

Wellington High School Dukes Marching Band (Hayley Sleggs, Director) The Dukes Marching Band is an award-winning marching band made up of students from 8th-12th grades. In the past, the band has participated in OMEA events, including local and state Marching Band events, Solo and Ensemble, and Large Group events. The Dukes Marching Band is a point of pride in the Wellington community. The band members continually strive for outstanding musical performances.

Buckeye High School Marching Band (Greg King, Director) The 2023 Buckeye Band will continue to build upon tradition and the pursuit of excellence. The Bucks are looking forward to another exciting year of musical performances. The marching Bucks have qualified and performed at the O.M.E.A. State Marching Finals 18 times in school history. The band is scheduled to perform at Walt Disney World in January of 2024. This year's show 'Conspiracy Theory' is a tailor-made show written by Gary P. Gilroy and custom marching drill written by Aaron Hines. Conspiracy Theory is about people among us who believe we live each day in a world of conspiracies orchestrated by people pulling strings from the shadows. The show encompasses the thought.... are we alone in the universe? The show consists of FBI Files, Paranoia, Revelation, and Big Brother.

Black River Pirate Marching Band (Liam Sleggs, Director) The Black River High School Pirate Marching Band hails from Sullivan, Ohio.

The Black River Band program is dedicated to fostering a lifelong passion for music by creating a life changing experiences through music education for the students of Black River Local Schools. The BR Bands are comprised of the HS Concert Band, Pirate Marching Band, Jazz Band, 7th & 8th Gr. Symphonic Band, and our 6th gr. beginning band. Collectively the band program delivers upwards of 50 performances a year. Performances range from Friday Night football games to marching band competitions to concert band festivals and parades. Both the High School bands and Middle School band have consistently earned superior ratings at OMEA-adjudicated events.

Willoughby South High School Marching Band (Fred Primavera, Director) Willoughby South High School is a part of the Willoughby-Eastlake City School District and is located 20 miles east of Cleveland. The Willoughby South High School Marching Band has participated in OMEA Marching Band Adjudicated Events since 1997 and has consistently qualified for the OMEA State Finals Adjudicated Event. In addition to OMEA performances, the group annually performs in a variety of local events and has also performed in Chicago, Orlando, New Orleans, and Niagara Falls.

Firestone Falcon Marching Band (Matthew Kennedy and Sloan Stakleff Directors)

The Firestone High School Marching Band enjoys a long and proud tradition of excellence. This ensemble performs at Firestone varsity football games, local parades, events, festivals, and competitions. The Firestone Band program offers students the opportunity to be in marching band, concert ensembles, small ensembles, jazz band, and winter guard.

Firestone Community Learning Center is part of the Akron Public Schools. It is home to the Akron School for the Arts and KSU Academy of Performing Arts offering students in-depth music study; including performance, music theory, history, and exploration of music careers.

Cloverleaf Colts Marching Band (Andrew Winter, Director) The Cloverleaf Colts Marching Band has performed at the OMEA State Marching Band Finals 40 years in a row, earning a Superior rating for the past 5 years in a row. The Marching Band has also performed several times in Florida, as well as at numerous bowl games and holiday parades throughout the United States and Canada. This extraordinary group of students is honored to perform for you today as we exemplify our motto, '100 as 1, all or none!'

Norton High School Marching Band (Jamey Boezi, Director) The Norton High School Marching Band, known as the Pride of Norton, has a rich tradition of excellence. The marching band participates in OMEA and BOAadjudicated events in addition to local parades and festivals. Recent accomplishments include class, caption, and grand champion awards at OMEA events as well as BOA Regional class champion, caption, and finalist awards. The Norton High School Marching Band is honored to have earned BOA Grand National semifinalist recognition 5 times since 2012 and strives to continue a tradition of over 30 years of OMEA State Marching Band participation. The band program's success would not be possible without the incredible support of the Norton Music Boosters.

North Royalton High School Marching Band (David Vitale, Director) The North Royalton H.S. Marching Band is a long standing tradition of excellence. The marching band has performed at many different events such as the Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom Parade down Main Street USA, the MCS National Championship Bowl, the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California, and the Indianapolis 500 Parade. The NRHS Marching Band has appeared at the OMEA State Marching Band Finals every year since 1986. Under the direction of Mr. David Vitale, the NRHS Marching Band has earned Superior Ratings at various OMEA Marching Band Adjudicated Events and this past season earned titles such as Best Overall Visual Effect, Best Overall Auxiliary, Best Overall General Effect, Best Overall Percussion, and Grand Champion. This year the band is excited to have been selected to perform at Walt Disney World during spring break.

The Fighting Cardinal Marching Band consists of students in grades 9-12 at Mentor High School. The band regularly participates in OMEA adjudicated events and has performed at The Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom, and for President Barack Obama on his presidential election tour.

Medina Musical Bees Marching Band (Jason J. Locher, Director) Our community believes music and the arts are an essential part to student learning in our public schools. It is because of our community support that the Medina Musical Bees Marching Band is the largest student organization in our school. Our marching band is one of many performing ensembles opportunities our band program offers to our students. The Musical Bees perform at community parades, support our Battling Bees Football Team, have performed at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom over the last 30 years, and participates in a number of O.M.E.A. Marching Band Adjudicated events across Ohio. At many of their performances they have earned and have been recognized with some of the top honors. Among their most recognized accomplishments has been their 20 consecutive years of earning a Superior Rating at O.M.E.A. State Marching Band Finals.

Avon Mighty Eagle Marching Band (Aaron Jacobs, Director) The Avon Mighty Eagle Marching Band has been competing in OMEA Adjudicated Events for over 30 years. The band has achieved Superior ratings at OMEA State Finals in four of the last five seasons. They have also earned numerous OMEA Local Event Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion Awards during those seasons at OMEA Perkins, Maumee, and Brunswick. This season the band features its largest Color Guard in school history. The band will finish their season with a performance at the Bands of America Grand National Championships at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, IN.

The Amherst Marching Comets (Christopher Barbaro, Director) Your average marching band is parading down a secluded town street where they come across an eerie rundown house/castle. All life around this dwelling is dark, lifeless, and scary and is located next to a Cemetery. Being the curious kids they are, they decide to investigate but end up getting more than they bargained for.

Brunswick High School Marching Band (Ethan Eraybar, Director) The Brunswick High School Marching Blue Devils have a long tradition of excellence. The Band has been an OMEA State Marching Band Finalist every year for the past 38 years and has earned a Superior Rating at State Finals for the past 20 consecutive years. The band is a 10-time Bands of America Regional Championship Finalist and a four-time Class 4A Champion at BOA Regionals. The band has appeared in numerous parades and festivals, including the 1985 Presidential Inaugural Parade, the Orange Bowl Parade, the Citrus Bowl Parade, and the Pearl Harbor Parade, and has been featured on New Year's Eve at Disney's Magic Kingdom and Epcot. In 2020, the band represented the United States in the London New Year's Day Parade.

Brunswick Sound Spectacular Trophy Presentation

Sound Spectacular Memorial Trophies The Kathryn Curtis Award for Musical Performance Kathryn Curtis was a wonderful young girl and role model for her classmates. She loved school and excelled as a student. She put others before herself and went out of her way to help new kids. It was Kathryn’s dream to one day become a member of the Brunswick High School Band program and to play piano in the Jazz Band. Kathryn was only eight years old when she passed in 2007, but her memory lives on. The Brunswick Band family is pleased to present The Kathryn Curtis Award for Musical Performance to the best musical performance at Sound Spectacular.

The Janet Hein Reserve Grand Champion Award In 2017, the Brunswick Band family lost long-time band friend, supporter and volunteer, Janet Hein. Janet served the Marching Blue Devils for 15 years, dedicating countless hours of service to the band program. She was an aspiring kazoo player who loved being on the Equipment Crew for our Front Ensemble. A passionate and opinionated person, Janet was a strong advocate of music education in our schools. We are honored to dedicate the Sound Spectacular Reserve Grand Champion Award to Janet Hein.

The Al Rose Grand Championship Award Our Grand Championship Award celebrates the extraordinary legacy of Brunswick Band volunteer, Equipment Crew member and selfless servant, Alvan Rose. Al was a college graduate, decorated Naval officer, Vietnam combat veteran, chocolatier, salesman, husband, father and grandfather. After his daughter joined the Marching Blue Devils, Al’s passion became serving the Brunswick High School Bands, which he did for over 35 years. He loved being with the band and showed his excitement for the students at every performance. Al was a kind, compassionate and inspiring man whose friendship was prized by all. Many non-Brunswick band students and directors knew him as the “Face of Sound Spectacular” as he greeted each band as they came on the field for the first 35 years of the competition’s existence. It is with heartfelt gratitude from our entire Brunswick Band family that we dedicate this championship trophy to Al.
