Eszter Szép: Mental Unload: Introduction 1 Algorithms define what reaches us----which news items, which disastrous event, which social movements, which images, which gossip, which cute animal. Our relationship to reality is increasingly mediated by our phones. Keeping up and staying with the trouble the world is experiencing is demanding. We scroll in an increasingly stressful and increasingly passive state, isolated in our digital filter bubbles. The comics in this issue explore our strategies to ease our minds, to cope, to stay with the trouble, to connect, to build hope, to foster change. Welcome to mental unload.

Emmi Jormalainen: Grand Popo 1 My godmother passed away two years ago. She was nearly 80 years old. We used to spend Sundays together, eat soup, drink coffee, and talk about literature and travels. 2 When I cleaned out her apartment, I kept a few books and some beautiful dishes as mementos. 3 Book title: Around Africa. I read about a man who built a cultural centre in Benin. 4 I missed my godmother and realised that I don’t know anything about Africa. My godmother never travelled there, but perhaps I could. 5 And suddenly I was on my way to Benin.

2 Before the trip, I got eight vaccinations. I got pills for malaria. Half of my suitcase was boxes of medicine.
3 I bought chocolate bars from a French supermarket. I keep them in the fridge in case of emergency.

1 I have been travelling a lot, but here everything is new and different. Every cell of my body is sweating. I feel ashamed to be white. I have electricity, medication, and bottled water.
2 At nights, I google things I have experienced. My neighbours do the same. At the breakfast table: “Did you know that, according to research, Beninese people don’t feel loneliness.” “What is Benin’s GDP per capita?” “I read that there are three different types of Legbas.” “What is Mami Wata?”

1 The heat is everywhere. I don’t need to do anything at all. Still I sweat, got tired, and grumpy. My sweaty hands are making the paper messy. This is a society where I am pretty much useless.
2 The crashing of the waves can be heard in my room day and night, even though the beach is hundreds of meters away.

The anatomy of a scroll. 1 My finger knows the path before I do. … Unlock … 2 Scroll. Scroll. Scroll. Like pulling a slot machine handle…

1 I keep watching it flicker… Because if I look away… 2 the world might end… but it’s not that… 3 I tell myself it’s crucial… 4 but it’s not real…

Jari Vaara: Basic Phone Switch Diary 1 After years of use, I realize what kind of nonsense I’m wasting my time on. I decide to switch to a basic phone.
2 I don’t know how to lock my phone, and it keeps calling random numbers by itself... ...just a moment... ..thank you for calling the Fish Oil Association support hotline..... all of our customer service agents are currently busy.... 3 In the evening I get a reminder of my addiction. Why on earth am I scrolling through settings?
4 Aren’t you worried that you’re completely falling behind the world? Well, no. On the contrary. I have no idea about Trump’s latest stunts. Or Medvedev’s latest postperformance act..5 I also realized how much negative content I was exposed to every day. ...research reveals.....cats without six-packs........With my method you retire as a fish oil millionaire by the age of 30....the best version of yourself... Shop like a fish oil heir......Let me tell you why you should consider dating young walruses.

1 They made me feel like something is missing from my life, and that I am a failure because I have problems.
2 After two weeks, the only thing I miss is a maps app. Left? Right? What kind of street is this anyway?
3 But sometimes, when you get lost, you can find yourself in some strange place. Delicious fish oil coffees and lattes.
4 I notice that people are getting annoyed because I don’t respond fast enough to emails and messages......I already sent an email two hours ago....Hello? Is anyone there?! ....can’t reach you again...
5 But maybe that’s a small price for being able to focus on small moments.

1 The world was smiling at me. 2 And I finally felt like drawing again, 3 Or was I just imagining it all? 4 I had a really angry day
5 Which I took as a good sign 6 But after that, it was just a lot of waiting.
7 Hey, how are you doing? Are the meds working? 8 You know, to be honest….I have no idea.

Link 1 Today WE are making extra crunchy super fudgy… 2 3 signs you MIGHT be a transsexual 3 You better CONSUME your protein!!! 4 He really is so DIFFERENT than all the other kittycats. 5 Is social MEDIA making my beloved child gay? 6 BUT-t 7 Did you know that WE are only one step away from reaching our full potential? 8 Today we ARE 1000000 days in war 9 Today I CONSUMED 100 pickles 1 sitting! 10 A couple of kids killed BY THE police. Again. 11 SAME guy different mindset 12 Basically the SYSTEM is stupid.

Aika
1 Every now and then, I become one with the wind and the birds, letting nature free my mind from the webs of the digital world, until I can finally think clear again.

Arinnovo: Missing Gwen 1 Hey my love 2 it’s been a while. 3 I haven’t seen you since… 4 since… 5 ah. 6 This has to be a dream then. 7 Right? 8 Yeah. 9 oh.. well.
